ALL ABOUT TRANSFERRING It’s easy to transfer to Lakehead. Our pathway agreements and general transfer policies are designed to help you from your current or previous studies at either college or university – or even both!

There are 3 different ways to transfer and become a Lakehead student
1 BILATERAL AGREEMENTS – FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES This is an agreement between Lakehead University and an accredited community college that allows college graduates of a specific program to enter directly into a specific Lakehead program in the first, second, or third year of study.
2 MULTILATERAL AGREEMENTS – FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES Similar to Bilateral agreements, a college graduate from ANY Ontario college in specific programs can enter directly into a specific Lakehead program in the first, second, or third year of study.
3 GENERAL TRANSFER REQUIRMENTS – FOR COLLEGE AND/OR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS & GRADUATES Unlike a bilateral or multilateral agreement, any college or university student (or graduate) will be assessed automatically for transfer credit.
Types of Transfer Credit Depending on whether you enter into Lakehead through bilateral or multilateral agreement, or through our general transfer agreements into any program at Lakehead, will determine what type of transfer credit you may receive. In some cases, you may enter directly into Year 2 or 3 of the program. In other cases, you may receive either direct equivalency or unspecified equivalency credits:
DIRECT EQUIVALENCY
UNSPECIFIED EQUIVALENCY
A direct equivalency would mean that you received transfer credit for a specific course offered by Lakehead.
If the course work does not quite match, you may receive unspecified transfer credits in a specific subject. As most programs have electives, you have the ability to use these transfer credits to fulfill those elective requirements.

General Admission Requirements These are the requirments to be considered for admission as a university transfer student: • Attended a university and successful completion of university level course work since leaving high school/college; • Program-Specific Prerequisite courses; • A minimum overall average of C or 60%. How Does Transfer Credit Work?
For university students (or graduates), Lakehead will automatically consider you for transfer credit as part of your application. In general:
- HUFFINGTON POST
• A minimum grade of 60% must be achieved in accredited degree level courses in order for transfer credit to be considered. • Up to a maximum of 15 full credits towards a four-year Bachelor’s degree program, and a maximum of 10 full credits towards a three year Bachelors’ degree program may be granted. The amount of transfer credit received depends on a number of factors including: grades, previous course work, and the program applied to at Lakehead University.
TRANSFERRING FROM A COLLEGE If you are looking at starting university studies after studying at a college, Lakehead provides many opportunities to transfer. Depending on whether you have finished your college diploma or partially completed will determine the right pathway for you. Either way, we can help you achieve your goal of a university education.
What Are My Pathway Options?
In some cases, Lakehead has established multilateral agreements for particular diploma programs offered by all Ontario colleges. Refer to page 9 to see if your program is listed. In other cases, Lakehead has established articulation agreements for particular diploma programs offered by specific colleges. Refer to page 10-11 to see if your program is listed. If your program is listed in these charts, you will see the program offered at Lakehead offered as a pathway along with the average requirements and year of entry into our program. Often, we consider 1 or 2 years of your college studies! If your program is not listed, that’s okay! No matter what program you previously studied at college, all of our programs at Lakehead offer you the opportunity to transfer.
General Admission Requirements
These are the requirements to be considered for admission as a college transfer student: • Completed a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school; • Completed the appropriate program-specific prerequisite courses; and • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70%. How Does Transfer Credit Work? It depends on whether you’ve partially completed your diploma or have graduated. For college graduates with a diploma: 1. Three-Year Diploma: For a three-year diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, or a 70% average in the last year of the program, up to 7.5 full course equivalents may be awarded. In exceptional cases, an additional 2 full course equivalents may be awarded. 2. Two-Year Diploma: For a two-year diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, or a 70% average in the last year of the program, up to 5 full course equivalents may be awarded. 3. One-Year Certificate/Diploma: For a oneyear certificate/diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, up to 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.

1. Partially Completed ThreeYear Diploma: For a threeyear diploma where only two full years have been completed, with a 70% cumulative average, or 70% average in the last year of the program, a maximum of 5 full course equivalents may be awarded.

The Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead University-Thunder Bay campus offers post-diploma engineering degree programs in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering designed specifically for graduate engineering technologists. After many years of experience in post-diploma education, Lakehead University’s Faculty of Engineering is the noted expert in post-diploma engineering education. Faculty members teach in both the engineering technology and engineering degree programs, using their knowledge about engineering technology education for the design and delivery of degree courses.
The unique design of Lakehead’s engineering programs enables students to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree in four years, while also earning an Engineering Technology Diploma in their respective field by the end of the second year of their BEng degree. The field of engineering is generally associated with finding solutions for real world problems in an analytical fashion using the math, science and problem-solving skills developed through a solid education in engineering fundamentals. At Lakehead we believe engineers must also possess excellent communication skills as well as an understanding of the business, legal, and societal issues that impact development of the technological products and processes required to meet the demands of a global economy.

Experiential Learning is an important component in Lakehead’s Bachelor of Engineering programs. Our students participate in team-based learning including projects and presentations, hands-on laboratories, a Senior Design project, and have the opportunity to apply for Co-operative/Internship programs and International Exchange programs. Enhance your education by participating in our engineering speaker’s series, tours, volunteer opportunities, Technical and Professional Chapters, engineering competitions, and a variety of oncampus and community events.
The Co-op Advantage
A co-operative/internship option is available for all Engineering programs. You can apply directly in either second or third year, and will receive workshops on interviewing, resume preparation, and work performance. You will accumulate at least 16 months of paid, practical work experience and graduate a year later than students enrolled in the regular Bachelor of Engineering program.
ENGINEERING Q&A Question: What’s unique about Lakehead’s engineering programs? Answer: Our post-diploma engineering degree programs are unique because they are designed solely for graduate engineering technologists. In other words, we do not try to “bridge” you into regularly designed engineering degree programs. Our courses and programs are specifically designed for you. All our degree courses are designed to take into consideration your previous technology education.
Question: Are the engineering programs accredited? Answer: YES. Each engineering degree program at Lakehead University offered at the Thunder Bay Campus is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Graduation from a CEAB accredited program satisfies the academic requirements of the Canadian professional engineering associations.
Question: How long are the Post-Diploma engineering degree programs? Answer: Each program is a minimum of two academic years (September to April) in length following a series of transition courses taken during the summer prior to the start of the first full academic year of study. You will join Lakehead’s graduate Engineering Technologists in the 3rd year of the 4-year degree program. DIPLOMA + 2 YEARS* = ENGINEERING DEGREE
*Question: What if my engineering technology program is in a different area of specialization than the five disciplines you offer? Answer: Since most engineering technology specialties are very similar to one of our five programs, we are normally able to admit students from most technology programs. The applicant’s transcripts and the college calendars are examined to determine if core courses are missing in the applicant’s technology program. If core courses are missing, you will be asked to take “make up” courses from the first and second year of our engineering programs.
Question: What are the academic requirements for entry? Answer: Applicants must have a diploma in engineering technology from a community college, or the equivalent, with an average* of at least 70% (GPA = 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, B Grade) in the final year of their program to be eligible for admission consideration; or at least a 65% (GPA=2.5, C+ Grade) with two or more years of relevant industrial experience after completion of diploma.
Question: What will it cost - tuition, books, accommodations, etc? Answer: Fall/Winter tuition & fees cost approximately $9,000, and tuition for the Summer Transition courses is about $4,500. Approximately $2,500 is needed for books/supplies. Accommodation costs vary depending on your choice.
Question: What transition courses will I take during the summer months?
Answer: You will be required to take a series of transition courses during the months of July and August. Lectures typically begin the day following Canada Day (July 1). All students are required to take two engineering mathematics courses; Engineering 3021 Analysis A in July and Engineering 3022 Analysis B in August. Students are also required to take two engineering/science courses concurrently with these analysis courses.
