ALL ABOUT TRANSFERRING It is easy to transfer to Lakehead. Our pathway agreements and general transfer policies are designed to help you maximize your credits from your current or previous studies at either college or university – or even both! There are 4 different ways to transfer and become a Lakehead student
1 GENERAL TRANSFER REQUIREMENTS – FOR COLLEGE AND/OR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS & GRADUATES If a transfer pathway does not exist for a program, college students (or graduates) will be assessed for transfer credits automatically. University students (or graduates) are assessed for transfer credits upon receipt of course syllabi.
2 MULTILATERAL PATHWAY – FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES Similar to bilateral agreements, a college graduate from ANY accredited Ontario college in specific programs can enter directly into a specific Lakehead program in the first, second, or third year of study.
3 BILATERAL PATHWAY – FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES This is an agreement between Lakehead University and an accredited college that allows college graduates of a specific program to enter directly into a specific Lakehead program in the first, second, or third year of study.
4 ENGINEERING POST-DIPLOMA COLLEGE TRANSFER PROGRAMS – DIRECT ENTRY FOR GRADUATE ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGISTS
The Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead-Thunder Bay offers five post-diploma engineering degree programs enabling qualified graduate engineering technologists to earn a BEng degree in a minimum of a Summer + two regular academic years. See pages 14 - 15 for details.
Types of Transfer Credit The type of transfer credit you may receive depends on whether you enter into Lakehead through a bilateral or multilateral pathway, or by satisfying our general transfer requirements. In some cases, you may enter directly into Year 2 or 3 of the program. In other cases, you may receive either direct equivalency or unspecified equivalency credits.
DIRECT EQUIVALENCY
UNSPECIFIED EQUIVALENCY
A direct equivalency would mean that you received transfer credit for a specific course offered by Lakehead (e.g. Psychology 1100 Introductory Psychology).
If the coursework you have completed does not quite match any Lakehead courses, you may receive an unspecified transfer credit in a specific subject (e.g. Psychology 1_00 – First Year Unspecified Psychology Full Credit). As most programs have electives, you can use these unspecified transfer credits to fulfill those elective requirements.
We are here to help! Our Student Central team along with your Program Chair will help you understand the credits awarded and how they will be used towards your program at Lakehead.
7
TRANSFERRING FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSITY Let us help you achieve your degree completion goals. Whether you have started a degree at another university or are looking to complete a second degree, Lakehead provides you the opportunity to achieve your goals while recognizing the hard work and effort you have already put into university studies.
Admission Requirements
As a university transfer student, you are eligible for admission if you have: • Attended a university where you completed coursework (i.e. you have received grades); • Completed (or are completing) the prerequisite courses for your program of choice at the high school, college, or university level; and • Achieved a minimum overall average of 60% based on your university studies. To learn more about the admission requirements, including prerequisite courses, for university transfer students, visit: www.lakeheadu.ca/university-transfer-student

How Does Transfer Credit Work?
For university students (or graduates), Lakehead will consider you for transfer credit as part of your application. However, you are required to submit course syllabi, not course descriptions, for every course with a final grade of at least 60%. We will not transfer courses with grades under 60%. The amount of transfer credit that you will receive depends on a number of factors, including: final grades, course content, credit hours, as well as the program applied to at Lakehead University. Lastly, you must satisfy your program’s residency requirement. In most cases, you have to complete at least the last year of your degree at Lakehead.
8
TRANSFERRING FROM A COLLEGE If you are looking at starting university studies after studying at a college, Lakehead provides many opportunities to transfer. The right pathway for you can be determined whether you have finished your college diploma or have partially completed your college diploma. Either way, we can help you achieve your goal of a university education.
What Are My Pathway Options?
Lakehead has established numerous college transfer pathways with accredited Ontario colleges. For a list of the pathways that accept certain college transfer students from all Ontario colleges (i.e. multilateral pathways), refer to the “Pathways with All Ontario Colleges” section on page 10. In other cases, Lakehead has specific pathways for a particular diploma programs offered by specific colleges. Refer to the “Pathways with Specific Colleges” section on pages 11-13 for more information.
General Admission Requirements
You are eligible for admission if you have: • Completed (or are completing) a minimum of 1 year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school; • Completed (or are completing) the prerequisite courses for your program of choice at the high school or college level; and • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70% based on your college studies. To learn more about the admission requirements, including prerequisite courses, for college transfer students, visit: www.lakeheadu.ca/ undergrad-requirements
How Does Transfer Credit Work? For college graduates with a diploma*: 1. Three-Year Diploma*: For a three-year diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, or a 70% average in the last year of the program, up to 7.5 full course equivalents may be awarded. In exceptional cases, an additional 2 full course equivalents may be awarded. 2. Two-Year Diploma*: For a two-year diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, or a 70% average in the last year of the program, up to 5 full course equivalents may be awarded. 3. One-Year Certificate (excluding upgrading programs): For a one-year certificate, with a 70% or better cumulative average, up to 2 full course equivalents may be awarded. *For Engineering technology college graduates, see pages 14-15 for information about direct entry to Engineering through the post-diploma Engineering College Transfer program.
For college students who partially completed a diploma: 1. Partially Completed ThreeYear Diploma: For a three-year diploma where only two full years have been completed, with a 70% cumulative average, or 70% average in the last year of the program, a maximum of 5 full course equivalents may be awarded. 2. Partially Completed Two-Year Diploma: For a two-year diploma where only one full year has been completed, with a 70% cumulative average, or 70% average in the last year of the program, a maximum of 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.
For both college graduates and college students who partially completed a diploma: 1. A minimum grade of 70% must be achieved in diploma courses in order for transfer credit to be considered. 2. Transfer credit is granted according to appropriateness of the college program, admission requirements, and academic achievement in relevant courses. Specific courses for transfer credit will be determined on an individual basis. For some programs, the transfer credits may be unspecified credits that can be used towards fulfilling elective requirements. 3. The amount of transfer credit received depends on a number of factors, including: final grades, course content, credit hours, as well as the program applied to at Lakehead University. Lastly, you must satisfy your program’s residency requirement. In most cases, you have to complete at least the last year of your degree at Lakehead.

ENGINEERING
ENGINEERING With more than 50 years of experience in post-diploma programming, Lakehead University offers unique engineering programs in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering. The special design of the 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degrees at Lakehead University enables qualified graduate engineering technologists from Canadian colleges, or equivalent, to join Lakehead’s students in their third year of studies. The post-diploma College Transfer program consists of a Summer Transition offered in July and August followed by a minimum of two regular (September to April) academic years. The Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead University - Thunder Bay campus is proud to offer 5 post-diploma engineering degree programs in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Software Engineering for graduate engineering technologists. Lakehead University’s Faculty of Engineering is a recognized leader in post-diploma engineering education. Faculty members will work with college diploma graduates to develop the engineering skills necessary to complete their engineering degree.
Each Bachelor of Engineering degree program offered at Lakehead University-Thunder Bay campus is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). Graduation from a CEAB accredited program satisfies the academic requirements of the Canadian professional engineering associations.
The Co-op Advantage
A Co-operative/Internship option is available for all the BEng programs. Post-diploma College Transfer students can apply directly in third year, and will receive workshops on interviewing, resume preparation, and work performance. You will accumulate at least 16 months of paid, practical work experience and graduate a year later than students enrolled in the regular Bachelor of Engineering program.

Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning is an important component in Lakehead’s Bachelor of Engineering programs. Our students participate in team-based learning including projects and presentations, hands-on laboratories, a Senior Design project, and have the opportunity to apply for Co-operative/Internship programs and International Exchange programs. Enhance your education by participating in our engineering speaker’s series, tours, volunteer opportunities, Technical and Professional Chapters, engineering competitions, and a variety of on-campus and community events.
Bachelor of Engineering ~ Master of Business Adminstration The Bachelor of Engineering ~ Master of Business Adminstration (BEng/ MBA) provides a new degree option that enables students to integrate an undergraduate degree in Engineering with a Master of Business Administration degree. Students complete three years of Engineering studies and then in their fourth and fifth years take a combination of Engineering and MBA courses and at the end of five years they would receive two degrees. Prior to the fourth year, the students would need to meet the admission criteria for the MBA program, including the requirement for GMAT/GRE (students with excellent performance in their Engineering studies may be exempted). Students have the choice of applying directly into the BEng/ MBA program or may transfer into the program prior to the fourth year of studies.
