A member of our community helping the wider community Tyson Grinsell | Bachelor of Education/Honours Bachelor of Arts (Geography) As an active volunteer in his hometown while growing up, Tyson knew that he wanted to continue to help out when he enrolled at Lakehead. When he arrived here, he discovered countless opportunities to contribute to both campus life and the wider community, while still finding time to complete his concurrent Honours Bachelor of Arts and Education degrees. His volunteer efforts didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go unnoticed, as he received an Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers in 2013 from the Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

Throughout its history, Lakehead University has developed strong connections and partnerships with the First Nation, Non-Status, Métis, and Inuit peoples of Northwestern Ontario and Canada. We have sought to develop innovative programming that honours and celebrates Aboriginal heritage while providing culturally appropriate support for the next generation of Aboriginal learners. Students will develop an understanding of Aboriginal culture, heritage, and language by participating in activities that heighten their awareness of Aboriginal issues and identity. Various programs and courses are available to learn about Aboriginal language, history and culture, and they are available to all students. Other options include an Indigenous Speaker Series, Elders program, smudging, sweat lodge ceremonies, feasts, traditional teachings, cross-cultural workshops, pow wows, art displays, and much more!

Aboriginal Cultural and Support Services (ACSS) For individuals of Aboriginal ancestry, Lakehead University’s ACSS provides a culturally supportive environment for First Nation, Non-Status, Métis, and Inuit learners. Through a wide range of academic, individual, cultural and transitional services and support, the ACSS assists Aboriginal students in reaching their academic goals. All students have access to the Aboriginal Resource Centre and Lounge, which consists of an Elders’ room, computer lab, relaxation area, and a place to study or visit with peers. Bringing Passion to the Game and the Classroom Yoosrie Salhia | Honours Bachelor of Arts (History) During his five years at Lakehead University, Yoosrie built a reputation as an excellent student and a force to be reckoned with on the court. Along with making the Dean’s List several times, he also lead the Lakehead Thunderwolves basketball team to the CIS Championships four out of five years that he played with them.

The C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse features the 15,000-square-foot Thunderdome gymnasium, state-of-the-art Wolves’ Den fitness centre, newly-renovated, 50-metre, eight-lane swimming pool, cardio room, outdoor sports fields, beach volleyball courts, Kinesiology labs, squash court, and change rooms complete with saunas. The Hangar, Lakehead’s newest 50,000-square-foot student athletic facility features a 200-metre track, pro-grade artificial turf field, climbing wall, and additional weight training, aerobic and cardio areas. The Hangar is also home to the Sports Medicine Clinic.

Orillia Campus Facilities As a newer campus, Lakehead’s Orillia Campus will see its athletics facilities develop in years to come. In the interim, full-time Lakehead University – Orillia Campus students are eligible for membership at the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka during the fall and winter semesters. There is no additional cost for the membership as it is covered by your Athletics fees.

You’re not alone, though. We have many programs and support services in place that will help you achieve your academic and personal goals while studying at Lakehead.

Admissions and Recruitment

Provides help and advice with an impartial view on a wide range of issues, including academic concerns, appeals, campus services, personal matters, and landlord and tenant relations.

Coordinates services and facilitates academic accommodations for students with disabilities. Students with special needs related to a disability are encouraged to contact Student Accessibility Services as early as possible to arrange for any academic and/or physical accommodations that may be necessary.

Serves the whole university community, regardless of religious affiliation. Personal concerns, spiritual direction, addictions, and grief counselling are issues for discussion with the Chaplain.

The Thunder Bay Centre provides comprehensive health services through a team of registered nurses, doctors and counsellors. Services include physician appointments, referrals to specialists, and personal counselling. The Orillia Wellness Centre offers access to personal counselling, a naturopathic doctor, chaplain, and resources on health and wellness services in Orillia and the surrounding area.

Student Success Lakehead will help you transition to university and throughout your years. We provide academic advising and support, tutoring services, career exploration, co-operative education opportunities, leadership development, and job preparation. We also offer new student orientation and first-year experience programs.

Turning determination and support into academic excellence Kimberly Shirley | Honours Bachelor of arts (History) Kimberly is the perfect example of what can happen with hard work, passion, and perseverance. She has a rare neuromuscular disorder that requires her to use a wheelchair and rely on the help of a Special Skills Dog. But that didn’t stop her from graduating with the highest average in Lakehead University’s History program and earning an Ontario Graduate Scholarship worth $15,000 to put toward her master’s degree.

Are Entrance Scholarships Renewable?

Academic Entrance Scholarships are automatically awarded, with no application required, to Canadian scholars entering Lakehead University from a recognized Canadian high school curriculum.

Yes – they are both renewable and regainable!

Academic Entrance Scholarship averages are calculated based on the highest six Grade 12 U or M academic marks available at the time of the Scholarship Offer.

Students awarded a renewable Entrance Scholarship must maintain a minimum 80% (or 90% average for the Free Tuition Scholarship) in each academic year, according to the terms found in the Scholarship Offer. A normal, full course load is required in each year of study based on the student’s program of study and year level. Students who take less than a 100% course load but maintain an 80% average are eligible to receive a pro-rated scholarship value.

Scholarship Offers will be extended in two rounds. Round One will take place in May 2014, and Round Two will take place in July 2014. Qualified students will be awarded the best scholarship from either of the two rounds.

Students who do not maintain the minimum 80% average requirement to renew their scholarship may regain their scholarship at the same amount in subsequent years if an 80%+ average is achieved in their program’s normal full course load*.

Out-of-province students must provide mid-term marks by the end of April 2014 to be considered for scholarships. Final marks must be received by the end of July 2014 to be eligible for scholarship consideration. Students who are admitted to Lakehead University after May 2014 may be considered for scholarships.

Example: A student receives the Free Tuition scholarship. After 1st year, the student’s average is 79% so the student loses the scholarship for 2nd year. A minimum 85% average in Grade 12 U or M academic marks as of May 2014 is required. Renewable for four years, provided a minimum 80% average is maintained for each subsequent year. This scholarship may be combined with the Lakehead University Academic Entrance Scholarship up to the maximum value of free tuition. This scholarship cannot be held with the Lakehead University Presidential Scholarship.

From Lakehead to Oxford via India Margaret Veall | Honours Bachelor of Science (Anthropology) Being a student in Lakehead Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Anthropology department, and working with Dr. Carney Matheson, gave Margaret the opportunity to conduct hands-on research around the world, and she took full advantage. Along with being involved in projects in South America, Tanzania, and Italy, she also travelled to India in her third year to examine residue on stone tools to gain a better understanding of the dispersal route of humans after leaving Africa. Throughout her time as an undergraduate student at Lakehead, she published five articles, four archaeological reports, and made four conference presentations. She also received early acceptance to Oxford Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s PhD program while still an honours student, where she is now studying with the foremost experts in the field.

Concurrent Bachelor of Education Primary/Junior Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate, or Intermediate/Senior As a Concurrent Education student, you have the option of taking a four-year Concurrent Bachelor program or a five-year Concurrent Honours Bachelor program. Take courses in both the Faculty of Education and the faculty offering your academic major (e.g. Kinesiology in the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences) before spending a year exclusively within the Faculty of Education in order to qualify for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).

Consecutive Bachelor of Education Primary/Junior Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate, or Intermediate/Senior Open to applicants with sufficient academic backgrounds who have already completed an undergraduate degree. The Consecutive Bachelor of Education program leads to recommendation for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) after one year of study. This summer program focuses on developing skills required for second language teaching, offering a curriculum designed for students who enter the program with an Algonquian language background.

The Concurrent Bachelor of Education (Native Education) provides students of Native ancestry with the opportunity to pursue an Arts or a Science degree while working toward the Bachelor of Education degree with a specialization in Native Education. Over a four- or five-year period, you will develop professional teaching skills while learning to meet the unique social and cultural needs of the Native community, through courses in Native culture and traditions such as Native languages, Native arts and crafts, and Canada’s First Nations’ literature.

Ontario High School Applicants

Application Status

As a full-time student in an Ontario high school applying for entry to a degree program, you will apply through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre’s online application form, OUAC 101, at www.ouac.on.ca. The PIN and school number required to apply online must be obtained from your high school guidance counsellor.

Once you have applied to Lakehead University, you will receive instructions on how to access the online student information portal “myInfo.” Through myInfo, you can check the status of your application, including the status of any required supporting documentation. You will also receive a personal Lakehead University email account. Check your Lakehead email account regularly for updates on your application, as well as information on scholarships and bursaries, residence, registration, orientation, and more.

Please note: Your high school Guidance Office will forward your official grades to Lakehead University through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre. (For courses taken outside of regular high school, please refer to the section ‘Summer School/Night School/Correspondence’)

All Other Applicants If you are not currently a full-time Ontario high school student, you should contact the Office of Admissions and Recruitment at Lakehead University or access the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre’s online application form, OUAC 105D, at www.ouac.on.ca International students who wish to apply to Lakehead University may do so using the OUAC 105F application form. The recommended deadline for application AND receipt of official supporting documents is April 2, 2014. Applications may be submitted after this date.

Part-Time Studies If you are interested in studying part-time, you will apply using the Lakehead University undergraduate application form available online at: admissions.lakeheadu.ca Note: When completing the application form, please outline your academic background in the context of admission requirements stated in the University Calendar or on our website. At this time, you should also specify the program and major to which you wish to be considered. You should also indicate whether you plan to study on a full or part-time basis.

Advanced Standing INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB): Applicants who have completed an International Baccalaureate Diploma will be considered for admission provided that the completed diploma includes the subject area requirements for their chosen program of study. Applicants must possess a total score of 28 in six subjects, three of which must be at the higher level (HL), with no score less than four in any subject. Applicants presenting the IB Diploma may be considered for advanced standing credit in some higher level subjects provided a score of 5 or better has been attained in the higher level subject. Please note that no advanced standing will be granted on Standard Level (SL) courses. ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP): Courses and examinations may be used to determine admissibility and will also be automatically considered for advanced standing credit or exemption. Applicants who have achieved a minimum grade of 4 on the placement exam may be eligible to receive advanced standing credit. Students must ensure that exam results are submitted to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment for consideration for advanced standing.

Offers of Admission

Summer School / Night School / Correspondence

Lakehead University will assess and extend Offers of Admission to qualified applicants throughout the entire admissions cycle. It is important that you remain informed about your application by reviewing all Lakehead University correspondence. Any and all conditions outlined in an Offer of Admission must be met in order to finalize your admission to Lakehead University.

Lakehead University accepts Grade 12 U or M courses or equivalent taken through summer school, night school or correspondence. It is the student’s responsibility to inform Lakehead University of any courses taken outside of regular high school, and to ensure that final official grades are received no later than August 13, 2014.

Ontario High School Applicants

Repeated Courses (High School Applicants Only)

Selected students will receive early conditional Offers of Admission from January through late May. These early conditional Offers will be based on either Grade 11 marks or mid-term and final Grade 12 marks. From June to August, all applications will be reviewed as final Grade 12 marks become available.

Lakehead University does not penalize high school students who have repeated courses. The highest Grade 12 U or M grade or equivalent will be used when calculating the admission average.

All Other Applicants Offers of Admission will be sent out on a rolling basis to qualified applicants who have completed an application and submitted all supporting documentation to the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. Applicants can expect to receive an admission decision within four to six weeks of submitting a complete application. 44

Alternate Offers Students who do not meet the admission requirements of their program of choice but who do meet the General Admission Requirements of Lakehead University will automatically be considered for an alternate program.

STUDENT DEFINITIONS

PROFICIENCY IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

High School Student A student who is currently attending high school on a full-time basis or has recently graduated (within two years), and who has not completed any post-secondary studies at another institution.

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not studied in an English language school system for more than three full years will be required to present proof of English proficiency by achieving appropriate standing on one of the following tests:

University Transfer Student

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

A student who has attended a university and successfully completed university level course work since leaving high school/college with a minimum overall average of C/60% or equivalent. Applicants must also ensure that they hold the minimum program-specific preparatory course prerequisites at the Grade 12 U or M level or equivalent. Transfer credit may be awarded for courses in which an applicant has achieved a standing of at least 60% or equivalent.

College Transfer Student A student who has completed a minimum of one year of full-time academic studies at an accredited community college since leaving high school with a minimum overall average of B/70% or equivalent. Students who have completed a college diploma with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.0 or equivalent will be considered for transfer credit and can look forward to the opportunity of turning their diploma into a degree. Students from an ABHE Accredited Bible College may be eligible to receive transfer credit.

Mature Student Lakehead University provides opportunities for admission to mature students who do not meet the General Admission Requirements, but hold promise of academic success as determined by the Admissions Committee. A mature student is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who:

The Gateway program offers students the opportunity to pursue university studies while providing enriched supports and programming. Gateway is geared towards students who successfully meet their academic program course prerequisites, but whose academic average does not represent their academic potential. The Native Access program is a nine-month full-time preparatory program designed to provide you with the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of a university degree. You will study in a culturally sensitive and Aboriginal-friendly environment while you take preparatory courses to help you improve your study, mathematical, and writing skills. You will also have the opportunity to take some degree courses and be supported throughout the year with additional counselling and tutoring. Upon successful completion of the Native Access Program, you may choose to pursue an undergraduate degree at the university.

Native Nurses Entry Program (NNEP) The Native Nurses Entry program is a nine-month preparatory program designed to provide you with the opportunity to obtain the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.

Lakehead Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Academic English Program (AEP) is an intensive English language program designed to improve international studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; English language proficiency. Through a combination of academic English, cultural, and social activities, students will be immersed in practicing the English language in real life situations. International students who successfully meet our academic requirements but are below our English language proficiency requirements are encouraged to consider the AEP. Students who fall into this category are encouraged to apply for their Lakehead University program of choice, and once all documents are received, students will automatically be considered for admission through the AEP. The AEP has five levels; each level is 14 weeks in duration. Students will be placed in a level based on placement test results taken prior to the start of the program.
