“ I came to Lakehead because of the small class sizes and the nature-filled environment. But the University offered me so much more. I got involved in the African and Caribbean Association. I met a lot of interesting people from different backgrounds, and I got to share my culture with others.”

“ At Lakehead, getting involved is really easy. I first started volunteering for LUSU events, and now I am the president of Lakehead University International Club (LUIC). Lakehead is giving me the opportunity to learn new skills, learn things about myself that I have never known before, and to push myself harder to achieve what I want.”

“ While at Lakehead, I discovered my passion for the Gerontology program which I had no clue about before. I always shared close relationships with older adults, and finding out about a program related to my interest was the greatest gift from Lakehead. I have also had the opportunity to help start a club with my friends that helps to bring Canadian and international students together.”

“ I had a great opportunity to get involved on campus with the Student LEADers program where I participated in and provided input to develop on-campus events. I am also the president for the South Asian Student Association (SASA) and the Cricket Club. Student life is more than just education; it gives me the opportunity to network and socialize with others. At Lakehead, every student has the chance to experience life-transforming activities that help us be well prepared for the future.”

“ At Lakehead, I have had the chance to improve my English skills and to participate in numerous activities, including winter sports. It has been awesome! At the same time, I took my first academic course in the Faculty of Engineering, where I met one of the best instructors I have ever had. He showed me what it is to have passion for a subject. Now, I am participating in a research placement with him. I love this place! I will take this experience with me throughout my entire life.”

“ On my exchange, I met people not only from Ireland, but also from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden, France, and many more countries! My experience gave me a big self esteem boost, as I learned just how much I can accomplish as I discovered strength and independence that I never knew I had before.”

“ On my exchange, I got to learn about my subject through a different perspective, which has benefited me in my classes since returning to Lakehead. I appreciated being able to take part in all of the traditions and events associated with another university environment. Highlights of my exchange include being asked to give a presentation at a European Union organized conference on climate change and its impacts, and having the chance to travel to other countries like Russia.” 7

Who Is Eligible?

Are Entrance Scholarships Renewable?

Academic Entrance Scholarships are automatically awarded, with no application required, to Canadian scholars entering Lakehead University from a recognized Canadian high school curriculum.

Yes – they are both renewable and regainable!

Academic Entrance Scholarship averages are calculated based on the highest six Grade 12 U or M academic marks available at the time of the Scholarship Offer.

Students awarded a renewable Entrance Scholarship must maintain a minimum 80% (or 90% average for the Free Tuition Scholarship) in each academic year, according to the terms found in the Scholarship Offer. A normal, full course load is required in each year of study based on the student’s program of study and year level. Students who take less than a 100% course load but maintain an 80% average are eligible to receive a pro-rated scholarship value.

Scholarship Offers will be extended in two rounds. Round One will take place in May 2014, and Round Two will take place in July 2014. Qualified students will be awarded the best scholarship from either of the two rounds.

Students who do not maintain the minimum 80% average requirement to renew their scholarship may regain their scholarship at the same amount in subsequent years if an 80%+ average is achieved in their program’s normal full course load*.

Out-of-province students must provide mid-term marks by the end of April 2014 to be considered for scholarships. Final marks must be received by the end of July 2014 to be eligible for scholarship consideration. Students who are admitted to Lakehead University after May 2014 may be considered for scholarships.

Students who do not maintain the minimum 90% average requirement to renew their Free Tuition scholarship may regain a scholarship valued at $2,500 in subsequent years if an 80%+ average is achieved in their program’s normal full course load*.

Could The Value Of My Entrance Scholarship Offer Change?

Example: A student receives the Free Tuition scholarship. After 1st year, the student’s average is 79% so the student loses the scholarship for 2nd year. During 2nd year, the student’s average increases to 85%. The student will regain a scholarship valued at $2,500/year (not free tuition) beginning in their 3rd year.

How and When Are Academic Entrance Scholarship Offers Made?

Yes, your scholarship offer can always improve! Your final Entrance Scholarship value will be the best value from either Round One or Round Two. 18

*Students who take less than a 100% course load but maintain an 80% average are eligible to receive a pro-rated scholarship value.

No gaps in studies are permitted. All scholarships are payable in the first 4 years of the degree program only.

Access Programs In addition to our regular entry pathways for admission, Lakehead University offers a number of special access opportunities that allow students who may not meet the regular admission requirements, but who demonstrate potential for success, to start university. These programs often feature specialized supports and programming to help students make the transition to university and develop skills to ensure their academic success.

Aboriginal Access Programs

Apply Directly

No Application, Automatically Considered

At Lakehead University, we are committed to promoting opportunities through education for people of Aboriginal ancestry. We offer a wide range of programs designed to encourage you, as an Aboriginal person who might not meet the regular or mature student admission criteria, to pursue a university education in an academically, socially, and culturally supportive environment. aboriginalprograms.lakeheadu.ca

The Gateway program offers students the opportunity to pursue university studies while providing enriched supports and programming. Gateway is geared towards students who successfully meet their academic program course prerequisites, but whose academic average does not represent their academic potential. No application is necessary; students will automatically be considered for admission under Gateway as part of the regular admission assessment process.

Native Access Program (NAP)

Academic English Program (AEP)

The Native Access program is a nine-month full-time preparatory program designed to provide you with the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of a university degree. You will study in a culturally sensitive and Aboriginal-friendly environment while you take preparatory courses to help you improve your study, mathematical, and writing skills. You will also have the opportunity to take some degree courses and be supported throughout the year with additional counselling and tutoring. Upon successful completion of the Native Access Program, you may choose to pursue an undergraduate degree at the university.

No Application, Automatically Considered

Native Nurses Entry Program (NNEP) The Native Nurses Entry program is a nine-month preparatory program designed to provide you with the opportunity to obtain the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of the four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.

Lakehead University’s Academic English Program (AEP) is an intensive English language program designed to improve international students’ English language proficiency. Through a combination of academic English, cultural, and social activities, students will be immersed in practicing the English language in real life situations. International students who successfully meet our academic requirements but are below our English language proficiency requirements are encouraged to consider the AEP. Students who fall into this category are encouraged to apply for their Lakehead University program of choice, and once all documents are received, students will automatically be considered for admission through the AEP. The AEP has five levels; each level is 14 weeks in duration. Students will be placed in a level based on placement test results taken prior to the start of the program. Upon successful completion of Level 5, students will move into their academic program of study. For more information, visit international.lakeheadu.ca
