Introduction to power semiconductor devices: structure, principles of operation and characteristics. Trigger and timer circuits; commutation and protection; controlled and uncontrolled AC-DC converters and AC-AC cycloconverter voltage controllers; DC-DC chopper circuits; switch mode power supplies; DC motor control; DC-AC inverter circuits; AC motor control and uninterruptible power supplies. Mechanical Engineering Program Lecture: Mechanics of Materials II

Transformation equations for plane stress and plane strain; principal and maximum shearing stresses and strains, Mohr’s circle. Stresses in thin-walled pressure vessels. Combined loading problems. Beam deflection by integration, and super-position. Buckling; Euler’s equation for columns, the secant formula and empirical column formulas. Strain rosette analysis. Presented by Dr. Hao Bai

Mathematics Program Lecture: Math for INEP Students I

Continues on from Mathematics 1135. Topics include: exponents; scientific notation; calculator usage; solving equations; formula manipulation; and descriptive statistics, including graphs and measures of central tendency. Presented by Mr. John F. Kimball

Chemical Engineering Program Lecture: Unit Operations I

LOCATION: AT 4019

Study of the heat transfer unit operations important to chemical engineering. Theory of heat transfer by three modes: conduction, convection and radiation. Unsteady-state heat transfer. Design and analysis of heat exchangers. Design and analysis of evaporators. Presented by Dr. Lionel J. Catalan

Electrical Engineering Program Lecture: Electronics I

Semiconductor theory applied to p-n junctions, bipolar and field effect transistors; diode circuits; rectifiers; safety in the workplace; transistor biasing circuits and stabilization; small signal amplifier analysis; frequency response of small signal amplifiers. Biology Program Lecture: Genetics

An introduction to the principles of inheritance, modern gene concepts and basic population genetics is presented in a lecture, laboratory and problem-solving format. Presented by Dr. Wensheng Qin

Business Program Lecture: Marketing Management II

LOCATION: RB 1044

Building upon the concepts and techniques introduced in Marketing I, this course introduces the major marketing policy decisions that influence the successful design and implementation of the organization’s marketing strategy. Emphasizing a decision-making perspective, this case course requires students to consider formulation and management of the firm’s product policies, pricing strategy, promotional programs and distribution channels. In addition, students are introduced to selected topics of current interest to marketing managers. Today’s lecture will be on digital marketing. Presented by Dr. Joel A. Mohr

Nursing Program Lecture: Nursing Inquiry

LOCATION: SN 1015

Promotes an understanding of professional knowledge in nursing by exploring what constitutes knowledge, information and evidence. A beginning appreciation of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies will be fostered including the development of critical reasoning skills in identifying, consuming, and applying appropriate forms of knowledge and information in nursing practice. Biology Program Lecture: Flowering Plant Taxonomy

An introduction to the evolutionary relationships among the flowering plants and the processes that gave rise to their existing taxonomic hierarchy. The systematic identification of Ontario’s major flowering plant families is learned in labs. The methods, rules and history of flowering plant taxonomy are presented in lectures. An individual herbarium project is also completed.

English Program Lecture: Introduction to Academic Writing

LOCATION: RB 3049

An introduction to university-level standards of composition, revision, editing, research, and documentation. A review of English grammar (word and sentence level) and rhetorical forms (paragraph level and beyond), and a study of the methods and conventions of academic argumentation and research, with an emphasis on finding and evaluating sources, formulating research questions, developing arguments, and composing various types of analyses including academic essays.

Physics Program Lecture: Introductory Physics II

LOCATION: AT 2001

A calculus-based course intended for students in the physical sciences and applied sciences which includes Oscillations, mechanical waves and sound, electric charge, electric field. Coulomb’s law, Gauss’s law, applications of Gauss’s law, electric potential, capacitance, dielectrics, current, resistance, direct current circuit, magnetic field, electromagnetic induction, alternating current, electromagnetic waves and wave properties of light, accompanied by related laboratory work.

Civil Engineering Program Lecture: Construction Materials

LOCATION: RC 1002

A study of the fundamental properties, behaviour, and uses of asphalt and Portland cements, concretes, and stabilized soils. Laboratory measurements of the physical characteristics of these materials are performed. Computer or spreadsheet applications. Presented by Dr. Ahmed Bediwy

Outdoor Recreation Parks & Tourism Program Lecture: Group Dynamics in ORPT

LOCATION: RC 1001

Theoretical and applied study of the dynamic interactions among individuals in the context of groups generally, and in recreation settings in particular. Students will come to understand the nature and function of groups by examining topics such as group types, formation, benefits, influences, power and conflict management, decision making, leadership and followership, issues of diversity, and communication. Students will work to develop effective group interaction skills that are practical for a variety of outdoor recreation settings. Presented by Dr. Julie S. Rosenthal

English Program Lecture: Native & Newcomer Literatures in Canada: Contact Zones

LOCATION: AT 2020

An introduction to First Nations and settler literature in Canada, focusing on the ways in which the writing of these groups helps to define, negotiate, and critique the relationships between all Canadian treaty people. Texts from a variety of genres, such as fiction, travel and exploration narrative, life writing, poetry, songs, drama and film, will be studied in their historical, political, and cultural context.
