WHERE WILL YOUR

PASSION UNIVERSITY LINGO EXPLAINED

TAKE YOU?

You may be familiar with some university lingo by now, but if you are still wondering, here are some common terms used that will be helpful as you explore program options.

What is a…?

Undergraduate Degree - It is the first university credential you will be awarded upon graduation. Honours Program - A 4-year undergraduate degree with specialized and/or intensive courses at the 4th year level. It often includes a thesis or research-focused course. Bachelor’s Program - A 3- or 4-year undergraduate degree. Major - A program involving one primary focus of study (e.g. English or Biology). Double Major - A program involving two focuses of study (e.g. Biology & Chemistry). Concentration - A defined collection of courses that is embedded into and complements an Honours or Bachelor’s 4-year program. Double Degree - Two undergraduate degrees from two different degree types that are completed at the same time and meet all the requirements for both degrees.

If you have multiple interests and want to keep options open, you can consider: NAVIGATING YOUR OPTIONS Lakehead offers full-time and part-time studies leading to degrees, diplomas and certificates. Whether you decide to study on campus, online or a combination of both, you will be surrounded by supportive and engaging faculty that will ensure you are well prepared to make an impact on the world.

Minor - An optional collection of courses from a particular area of study that is different from your program and/or major. Certificate - A professional or an applied focus that provides learning outcomes that are distinct from your program. Check out certificates in Entrepreneurship, French Proficiency, Geomatics or Palliative Care. Specialization - A defined collection of courses taken from a particular or variety of disciplines that complement the major.

Best of Both Worlds As a student, it’s good to have options. Another exciting option we offer you is through our partnership with Georgian College. Together, we offer you the opportunity to pursue a degree and diploma at the same time, and in 4 years! Additional unique options also exist and will continue to be launched.

PARTNERSHIP Lakehead University-Georgian CollegePROGRAM Partnership Program

Gain both practical, hands-on experience with the theoretical knowledge you need in your field of study to be job ready. Our unique programs may see you studying at the Georgian College campus in Barrie or the Lakehead University campus in Orillia – or possibly both. Look for the handshake symbol (left).

ENGINEERING

One of a Kind in Canada. An Engineering Degree and Technology Diploma in 4 Years

Lakehead University is the only university in Canada where you earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree and a diploma in Engineering technology in just four years. It is a unique combination that attracts students from Victoria to St. John’s, as well as international students from afar. You will have access to professors who are active researchers, conducting cutting-edge studies that cross traditional disciplines. With undergraduate and graduate student involvement, this research has led to developments in wide-ranging areas such as environmental, biofuels, controls, mechatronics, structural, and biomedical engineering. The field of engineering is generally associated with finding solutions for real world problems in an analytical fashion using the math, science and problem-solving skills developed through a solid education in engineering fundamentals. At Lakehead we believe engineers must also possess excellent communication skills as well as an understanding of the business, legal, and societal issues that impact development of the technological products and processes required to meet the demands of a global economy. Bachelor of Engineering Degree with Diploma in Engineering Technology The unique design of Lakehead’s programs at the Thunder Bay campus enables students to earn a Bachelor of Engineering degree in four years while also earning a Engineering Technology Diploma in their respective field by the end of the second year of their BEng degree.

NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT

We’re more than trees. A modern approach to the

stewardship of the environment – in an unbeatable setting

36

At Lakehead, we believe Natural Resources Management is about people, science and technology, and applying natural and social sciences to the management of the environment for the benefit of society.

We offer you a balanced view of sustainable ecosystem management with respect to the many social, economic and environmental challenges and opportunities facing us now and in the future.

Stewardship allows for the sustainable extraction and utilization of products such as wood, biofuels, bioproducts, food, and natural medicines. Most forested landscapes in Ontario and Canada are publicly owned, and as such, are also important for recreational pursuits. Lakehead’s programs will prepare you to take an active and responsible role in the stewardship and future sustainability of Canada’s most important resources.

Through our innovative and hands-on approach, you will build a portfolio describing your individual combination of specific business skills, your acquired sound science foundation, and practical experience. This portfolio will showcase your achievements and allow you to be part of finding meaningful and lasting solutions for today’s unique environmental, societal and economic challenges in order to sustain our forests and natural resources for generations to come.

Whether you are interested in the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry (HBScF) or the Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management (HBEM), you will follow a common curriculum for the first two years of your program. After the second year, you select one of six specializations for your program. Acquiring a broad understanding of the topics and issues surrounding natural resources management will enable you to better understand and pursue your particular areas of interest and ensure the best career path possible.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT (HBEM) Three Specialization options: 1. Fish & Wildlife Conservation & Management, 2. Conservation Planning & Management, and 3. Sustainable Land Use Co-op Option Available You will obtain a sound understanding of natural processes in environmental ecosystems, including a strong background in forest environments; communication skills in writing and speaking; and practical technical experience, including industry-standard geomatics tools, such as GIS and remote sensing. Your studies will allow you to understand and maintain the integrity of the fundamental natural processes that drive our world’s ecosystems. With the opportunity to focus your study within a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of Fish & Wildlife Conservation & Management, Conservation Planning & Management, or maximize your elective opportunities through a Sustainable Land Use option. Regardless of your chosen stream, you will get a solid foundation aimed at making you not just well versed in current societal issues – based on science – but also employable due to our focus on technical skills development, communications and a comprehensive understanding of Crown Land management. Enjoy the flexibility to build your expertise in an area of interest such as wildlife or historical

and cultural perspectives. In an option unique to Lakehead University, when you complete the specialization in Wildlife Conservation and Management, you are eligible for accreditation as a Certified Wildlife Biologist by the Wildlife Society of America.

FORESTRY (HBSCF) Three Specialization options: 1. Forest Management, 2. Forest Health & Protection, and 3. Forest Products & Marketing Co-op Option Available Through a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of Forest Management, Forest Health & Protection, or the emerging frontier of Forest Products & Marketing. You will be exposed to the high-tech world of modern forest management through advanced precision forestry optimization, GPS/GIS systems, 3-D visualization, remote sensing with satellite imagery and airborne systems including drone (UAV) technology, genetic research, and much more. Our Forestry program is nationally accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board (CFAB), which will provide you with the academic credentials to become a Registered Professional Forester anywhere in Canada and the USA.

The World Awaits The opportunity to take your skills and passion across the world is available, with the option to participate in at least one international field school excursion as well as internationally-focused courses. This experience will help you better comprehend global challenges and opportunities linked to the three pillars of sustainability – environmental health, economic viability and social well-being and acceptance.

“ Lakehead offers way more than I expected. If you want a university experience where you’re supported in pursuing your passions, always encouraged to grow, challenged to try new things, and given hands-on experiences, then I recommend Lakehead.

Don't think you have to go to a big school to make a big change.”
