CHOOSE YOUR COURSES THE NEXT STEP ON YOUR PATH TO LAKEHEAD IS TO CHOOSE AND REGISTER FOR YOUR COURSES! CHOOSING THE RIGHT COURSES FOR YOUR PROGRAM IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR UNIVERSITY EXPERIENCE. IMPORTANT! BE SURE YOU REVIEW YOUR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS IN THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR TO ENSURE YOU KNOW WHICH COURSES ARE REQUIRED FOR YOUR PROGRAM. YOUR PROGRAM HAS SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS YOU MUST SATISFY IN ORDER TO GRADUATE.

REGISTRATION WILL OPEN IN LATE JUNE AND WILL STAY OPEN UNTIL SEPTEMBER. YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE OFFICIAL REGISTRATION OPENING DATE VIA YOUR LAKEHEAD EMAIL. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU REGISTER AS SOON AS REGISTRATION OPENS FOR OPTIMAL COURSE SELECTION! BEFORE STARTING YOUR COURSE SELECTION AND REGISTRATION, THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE IMPORTANT TO REVIEW AND FOLLOW:

1

REVIEW YOUR PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Before registering, it is important for you to review the Lakehead University Academic Calendar at calendar.lakeheadu.ca. The Academic Calendar contains information such as University, Faculty and Department regulations, program requirements and course descriptions, as well as course add and drop deadline dates. To view your program requirements: 1. Go to the Programs & Faculties section of the Academic Calendar. 2. Select your Faculty followed by Undergraduate Programs, depending upon what you have been admitted to. 3. Find your specific program within that department to get a detailed description of all courses you will need to take to complete your program. Keep in mind that you will need to refer to the Academic Calendar for the year that you begin your program.

10

IT IS ALWAYS BEST TO PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE IN THE SAME ORDER AS OUTLINED IN THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR WHICH IS NORMALLY: 1. Required courses in your major 2. Required courses outside your major 3. Specified electives (these may be Special Categories, a specified subject or year level) 4. Open electives (these are courses which have the greatest flexibility of choice)

for your previous studies? IMPORTANT! IF YOU HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR TIMETABLE, SPEAK WITH YOUR PROGRAM ADVISOR OR STUDENT CENTRAL AS THERE MAY BE OPTIONS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER

SUBJECT

YEAR LEVEL OF COURSE

HALF OR FULL COURSE

0 is an unspecified level 1 is first year level 2 is second year level 3 is third year level 4 is fourth year level

HALF COURSE: Odd numbers are half credit courses (0.5 FCE) FULL COURSE Even numbers are full credit courses (1.0 FCE)

CHOOSE YOUR COURSES

UNDERSTANDING SECTION NAMES

GEOG - 1120 - YA COURSES ACROSS MULTIPLE CAMPUSES An “O” in the third character of the section code will indicate Orillia and a “B” in the third character of the section code will indicate Barrie (Georgian College).

ONLINE COURSES

There are also a number of courses that are offered online. For online courses, the “section” portion of the course code will also be three (3) letters, with the second letter being a “D.” For example, PSYC-1100-YDE would be an online version of the PSYC-1100 course. Similarly, there can be multiple sections of online courses, in which case, the third letter will denote the course section (e.g. MATH-0212-FDE and MATH-0212-FDG would be two online sections of MATH-0212).

2

PRE-PLAN AND BUILD YOUR COURSE TIMETABLE

Once you've accepted your offer of admission, you can start to "pre-build" your timetable using Build My Pre-Registration in myInfo. This is a great tool that allows you to search by subject, year level, instructor, term, delivery method, day of the week, etc..

TOOLS TO BUILD YOUR TIMETABLE: LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC CALENDAR - review your program

requirements and ensure you are registering for the courses required to meet your program requirements for graduation.

“BUILD MY PRE-REGISTRATION” TOOL (MYINFO) - search the available course offerings, build your timetable and register for courses.

COURSE TIMETABLE (TIMETABLE.LAKEHEADU.CA) - an alternative way to search for courses by subject.

ACADEMIC SESSION F = Fall term course Y = Full year course W = Winter term course S = Spring course A = Summer course

SECTION DESIGNATION If there is more than one offering of a course each will be noted as a section A, B, C, D etc.

Tips for Building Your Timetable • Read each course description so you know what the course is about before you register. • Think about your academic goals and how the courses you choose align with those goals. • Don’t be afraid to try something new and discover new subject areas! • Schedule your program requirements before choosing electives. • Consider registering for courses with only one offering first. • Some courses have additional labs or tutorials. If so, you must choose one of the lab and/or tutorial sections for your timetable as well. These labs and/or tutorials must be registered for at the same time as their corresponding courses. • Take the same number of courses in the Fall term as in the Winter term. • Expect to devote 3 hours of self-directed learning time for every hour of class. • Consider other commitments such as work, family, etc. when designing your schedule. • Try to take all of your first-year requirements in first year, second-year requirements in second year, and so on. • Scheduling back-to-back classes is OK. You’ll have enough time to get from one class to the next. • Register for the entire academic year (September – April) and not just one term. Make your plan for the year. You can always review it again later.
