Health Technology Forum: Health and Technology in Rural and Remote Contexts This event featured researchers from a broad range of disciplines who are working to develop and utilize new technologies with the goal of improving health care in Canada’s remote and rural regions.

Health Technology Forum: Technologies Engaging Communities Exhibition: Innovations in Research Dissemination and Knowledge Mobilization This exhibition walking tour shared how the arts, as a technology, can engage communities in research to better our lives.

The Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies Speaker Series presenter, Dr. Jason Hong, Carnegie Mellon University, answered the following question for his audience, Are My Devices Spying on Me? Living in a World of Ubiquitous Computing.

Faculty Research Day

Ingenuity’s movie night, featuring Terminator 2: Judgement Day, took place in the Ingenuity Connections Theatre. Pizza, popcorn, and a good time was had by all!

This event was an opportunity to learn more about some of the varied research being undertaken at Lakehead University by our researchers and their teams.

This panel featured researchers from diverse disciplinary backgrounds who are using social media in different ways in their research, and touched on the benefits and challenges of using social media as a research tool, as well as ethical considerations.

Two-Eyed Seeing: Bringing Indigenous and Western Technologies Together This panel of researchers and their community partners highlighted the ways that researchers worked in partnership with Indigenous communities, individuals and/or organizations to bring together multiple perspectives and to ensure that the research they undertook was relevant to the communities they are working with.

Distinguished Researcher Panel: Valorizing Process and Progress in Interdisciplinary Research: Reflections from the Equity in Birthing Care Program This panel discussion explored the strengths and challenges of interdisciplinary health research and how using an interdisciplinary framework has shaped our individual thinking as researchers, and the evolution of the Equity in Birthing Care research program over time.

Tear it and Repair It Participants were invited to take apart electronics and see how they work or to use the components to create something new.

Northern IGNITE Northern IGNITE showcased research by allowing speakers to use a photo-only presentation when describing their passion and process throughout their research journey. This event focused on bringing Lakehead research activities to the community and encouraging industry partnerships. Research & Innovation Week 2019

Faculty Poster Session Researchers and their teams showcased the exciting research, innovation and partnerships occurring at Lakehead Orillia.

Orillia Native Women’s Group Storytelling Circle Art Show Orillia Native Women’s Group showcased their art work in the Orsi Family Learning Commons.

Innovation in Education Panel This year’s Education Panel highlighted research from some of our faculty members. Dr. Gary Pluim spoke about Global Citizenship Education and the need to broaden this curricular focus. Dr. Ellen Field presented her work from a national curriculum analysis on climate change in education. Finally, Steven Secord and Helen DeWaard demonstrated how we humanize while teaching in a technology ridden society.

Science and Sustainability Conference Faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students from environmental sustainability presented research findings on a diverse range of topics.

Storytelling Research Findings In collaboration with Orillia Natives Women’s Group and Lakehead, the storytelling circle project was created to bring together Anishnabee women to discuss their life stories to help each other heal and recover from past trauma through engaging in cultural and traditional projects.

Let’s Talk Engineering A group of high school students took part in a hands-on learning event with Dr. Nasir Uddin, his graduate student, Ifte Amin, and Lakehead Georgian Electrical Engineer students. Dr. Uddin and his students offered hands-on circuit building with the high school students.

Undergraduate Student Research Conference In order to highlight the large amount of quality research performed by undergraduate students, the annual Undergraduate Research Conference is held each year during Research and Innovation Week.

Graduate / PDF Conferences

Graduate Student Conference 2019 Lakehead University graduate students from all programs presented their research and competed with their program colleagues in either oral or poster presentation formats. For the oral presentations, this year again followed the format known as the “Three-Minute Thesis.�

Postdoctoral Fellows Poster Competition Postdoctoral fellows currently engaged in research at Lakehead University again participated in the Annual Research and Innovation Week Poster Competition for Postdoctoral Fellows. A panel of reviewers judged and adjudicated all eligible posters for first place in three categories.
