Becoming Financially Aware There are so many ways we can help you fund your education. The first step is to understand the different terms used. Here’s a handy guide to help you navigate your way.

Scholarship: Money awarded to support a student’s education, based on academic or other achievement. Bursary: Money awarded as financial assistance to students based on financial need rather than on academic achievement.

Award: Money given based on recognition of academic achievement and financial need. Loan: Money that students will have to repay Government loans are interest and payment-free while you are in school full-time. Grant: Money that you will not have to pay back. Expense: Money that needs to be spent to receive something in return. (E.g. tuition is an expense) Resource: Money that you have that can be used to spend on expenses. (E.g. employment income is a resource) Budget: A list of your expenses subtracted from a list of your resources to show how much money you will have left over.

Knowing Your Expenses Knowing the costs involved in attending university is important as you begin planning for your education. The costs will vary based on the program in which you plan to study. In addition to the cost of tuition, you also need to think about books, supplies, transportation and parking, as well as living expenses such as residence. Your costs will vary based on whether you are moving away from home or staying close to home. You don’t have to pay for university all by yourself! The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is here to help. What is OSAP? The Ontario Student Assistance Program is financial aid to help students pay for university. What types of financial aid are available? OSAP is a combination of grants and loans. It is important to know that Loans are both interest and payment free while you are in school full-time.

Student Loan Programs

How do I apply? There are three basic steps the first time you apply for OSAP: Step 1: Begin your application at ontario.ca/osap by registering as a new user. You will be assigned an OSAP Access Number and will create an OSAP profile. Step 2: In the spring, after you have been accepted to Lakehead, complete your OSAP application and gather your supporting documentation. Step 3: Upload the required supporting documentation to your OSAP Application on ontario.ca/OSAP or mail to Lakehead University, Student Central.

Ontario Student Assistance Program When do I apply? OSAP applications open in the spring. The earlier you start your OSAP application, the sooner you can find out if you qualify for funding and how much financial aid you will receive. What else do I need to know about OSAP? • Both full-time and part-time students can apply. • As a full-time student, you can choose to receive only non-repayable grants if you do not want the loan. • OSAP is available to dependent students, mature students, married students, and students with children. • If there are unexpected changes to your situation after you apply, you can request a review of your assessment. Ontario Student Grant (OSG) When you apply for OSAP, you are automatically assessed for the OSG based on your family income: • If your family income is below $50,000 per year, you will have average tuition fully covered. • If your family earns more than $50,000 per year, you may still qualify for grant funding. • Middle-income students will also receive generous OSAP grants and loans.
