Energy
STRATEGY
ACTIONS
1.
1.1 Create an ad hoc committee to further explore strategies for this action item.
Reduce building energy usage and support renewable sources.
Reduce total building energy consumption per gross square foot/ metre of conditioned foor area comparable to the leading universities in Ontario.
1.2 Identify what a “comparable rate” is by researching the energy consumption of other Ontario Universities. 1.3 Contact other Universities and investigate and identify best practices for reducing building energy use. 1.4 Conduct a buildings energy audit on campus. 1.5 Analyse results and develop a proposal and timeline for reducing energy. 1.6 Consider the feasibility of the following strategies:
2.
Support the development and use of energy from clean and renewable sources.
•
Building temperature standards;
•
Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting;
•
Occupancy and/or vacancy sensors;
•
Passive solar heating;
•
Ground-source heat pumps;
•
Co-generation;
•
Building recommissioning or retroft program;
•
Energy metering and management systems;
•
Program to replace energy-consuming appliances equipment and systems with high effciency alternatives;
•
Energy-effcient landscape design (e.g. the placement and selection of shade trees and windbreaks and the use of vegetation and refective materials to reduce heat islands);
•
Other energy conservation and effciency initiatives.
2.1: Explore best practices in renewable energy at other universities and research what works best for our regions.
