Thunder Bay Campus

Orillia Campus

Lakehead University’s main campus is nestled on wooded land in the heart of the city of Thunder Bay.

Lakehead University’s newest campus is located in beautiful cottage country in Central Ontario in the city of Orillia.

Many of the university’s buildings are grouped together around Lake Tamblyn, with residence complexes hugging the tree‑lined banks of the McIntyre River. The campus features underground tunnels that connect the central buildings for comfortable walking during inclement weather. With a mix of academic, laboratory, social and recreational spaces, the Lakehead University – Thunder Bay Campus features everything you need and more.

The permanent home of the Lakehead University – Orillia Campus is the first university campus in North America to be built to the highest standards of environmental responsibility and sustainability, achieving LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The original campus site, located in Heritage Place in downtown Orillia, continues to offer a full university campus environment with direct access to the historic downtown core – you’re never more than a stone’s throw away from all that Orillia has to offer.

The historic Port Arthur Collegiate Institute connects Lakehead into downtown Thunder Bay and offers new space for a number of programs and will be the home of the Faculty of Law.

With this sustained growth and expansion, the Orillia Campus is now home to its first residence complex, as well as a cafeteria and bookstore, in addition to the main academic building.

Three Words to Describe Experience: Life-changing, Amazing, Inspiring

Three Words to Describe Experience: Exciting, Adventurous, Memorable

“ I spent 10 months at the University of Tromsø, the world’s most northern university, through the north2north exchange program. Completely different, new, engaging, weird, strange, mindopening...it was an experience that provoked all kinds of emotions, feeling and opinions. My advice would be that if an opportunity like this presents itself to you – take it! It is totally worth it.”

“ On my exchange, I met people not only from Ireland, but also from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden, France and many more countries! My experience gave me a big self esteem boost, as I learned just how much I can accomplish as I discovered strength and independence that I never knew I had before.”

“ My exchange was an amazing experience. I enjoyed getting to meet new people who are now lifelong friends. I gained independence by living in a new country and I also had the opportunity to travel. My advice would be to not just consider an exchange – Do an exchange! It’s one of the many reasons I am very glad I went to Lakehead.”

“ The unexamined life is not worth living.” – Socrates

Social Sciences & Humanities The various disciplines that make up the Social Sciences and Humanities are all concerned with understanding social reality and are at the core of every university degree. Socrates, the philosopher, said that the unexamined life is not worth living. When we look for answers to the big and unavoidable questions that confront us... As individuals:

And as societies:

Who am I?

How did we get here?

What’s true?

Where should we be going?

What’s good? What’s just?

What would a just society look like? What should we teach our children? Are there universal human values?

24

= Orillia Campus

= Thunder Bay Campus

...we inevitably look to the Social Sciences and Humanities. When you major in Social Sciences and Humanities, you will have the opportunity to concentrate your studies on those aspects of social reality that are most important to you. Your future success will be shaped by the intellectual skills you will develop in a Social Sciences and Humanities program: critical thinking, communication, cultural and historical understanding, judgment, and adaptability.

BEng (Electrical) (Co-op/Internship option available)

As a chemical engineer, you will be skilled in the development, design, construction and operation of industrial plants in which matter undergoes a change. Versatile and well-grounded in chemistry, physics and mathematics, you will also apply empirical engineering know-how to solve problems. Become involved in faculty research projects in uranium ore processing, biomedical engineering, generating green energy from biomass, or applying biomembranes in effluent treatment.

As an electrical engineer, you will work on the development and manufacturing of electrical and electronics equipment. You will examine the fundamentals of physical science as well as more practical areas in the design and operation of industrial control systems, communication systems and electronic circuits, and the generation and distribution of electrical power. Specialized study awaits you in areas such as fibre optics, fuzzy controls, wireless communications, satellite communications, power systems and power electronics.

Natural Resources Management HBScF (Co-op option available), HBEM (Co-op option available), MF, MScF, PhD in Forest Sciences

Natural Resources Management can be defined as stewardship with the aim of reaching a balance between environmental sustainability, economic viability and social acceptability. Stewardship of our natural environment includes clean air and water, soil properties, carbon storage, biodiversity, wildlife and fisheries populations and habitats. Stewardship allows for the sustainable extraction and utilization of products such as wood, biofuels, bio-products, food and natural medicines. Most forested landscapes in Ontario and Canada are publicly owned and as such are also important for recreational pursuits. These vast forests house a large number of Aboriginal communities. Lakehead’s programs will prepare you to take an active and responsible role in the stewardship and future sustainability of Canada’s most important resources.

Access Programs In addition to our regular entry pathways for admission, Lakehead University offers a number of special access opportunities that allow students who may not meet the regular admission requirements, but who demonstrate potential for success, to start university. These programs often feature specialized supports and programming to help students make the transition to university and develop skills to ensure their academic success.

English Language Program

No Application, Automatically Considered

No Application, Automatically Considered

The Gateway program offers students the opportunity to pursue university studies while providing enriched supports and programming. Gateway is geared towards students who successfully meet their academic program course prerequisites, but whose academic average does not represent their academic potential. No application is necessary; students will automatically be considered for admission under Gateway as part of the regular admission assessment process.

Lakehead University’s English Language Program (ELP) is an intensive English language program designed to improve international students’ English language proficiency.

sage.lakeheadu.ca

Through a combination of academic English, cultural and social activities, students will be immersed in practicing the English language in real life situations. International students who successfully meet our academic requirements but are below our English language proficiency requirements are encouraged to consider the ELP. Students who fall into this

category are encouraged to apply for their Lakehead University program of choice, and once all documents are received, students will automatically be considered for admission through the ELP. The ELP has five levels; each level is 14 weeks in duration. Students will be placed in a level based on placement test results taken prior to the start of the program. Upon successful completion of Level 5, students will move into their academic program of study. For more information, visit: international.lakeheadu.ca

Aboriginal Access Programs Apply Directly At Lakehead University, we are committed to promoting opportunities through education for people of Aboriginal ancestry. We offer a wide range of programs designed to encourage you, as an Aboriginal person who might not meet the regular or mature student admission criteria, to pursue a university education in an academically, socially and culturally supportive environment. aboriginalprograms.lakeheadu.ca

Native Access Program (NAP) The Native Access program is a nine-month full-time preparatory program designed to provide you with the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of a university degree. You will study in a culturally sensitive and Aboriginalfriendly environment while you take

preparatory courses to help you improve your study, mathematical and writing skills. You will also have the opportunity to take some degree courses and be supported throughout the year with additional counselling and tutoring. Upon successful completion of the Native Access Program, you may choose to pursue an undergraduate degree at the university.

Native Nurses Entry Program (NNEP) The Native Nurses Entry program is a ninemonth preparatory program designed to provide you with the opportunity to obtain the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of the fouryear Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.
