F l o r i da Southern College E s ta b l i s hes First Named School Florida Southern College President Dr. Anne Kerr recently announced the establishment of the Barney Barnett School of Business and Economics, the first named academic school in the College’s 126-year history. Dr. Carol Jenkins Barnett (Class of 1979) made the gift to name the business school in honor of her husband’s birthday and his 42nd year with Publix Super Markets, Inc. Barney Barnett is a 1965 graduate of Florida Southern and serves as a member of the school’s Board of Trustees. “The creation of the Barney Barnett School of Business and Economics is an historic milestone
in the continuing, upward trajectory of Florida Southern College and will forever transform the caliber of business education for our students and faculty,” said Dr. Kerr. This undisclosed gift follows the College’s announcement last month of a $5 million naming gift from Vero Beach, Florida, alumnus Richard W. “Bill” Becker (Class of 1965) for the school’s undergraduate business building. The Barney Barnett School of Business and Economics will build on the strength of the college’s flagship business program to educate future generations

An initiative of EMERGE Lakeland, P2P (Peer2Peer Mentoring) aims to enrich the personal and professional development of Lakeland’s newlyengaged young professionals by partnering them with existing EMERGE Lakeland members. Regularly scheduled events and activities introduce participants to people and organizations that make Lakeland what it is today.
On April 20, an education session was held for P2P on the Lakeland campus of Polk State College (PSC). The school’s top leaders discussed its efforts to be a leader in higher and continuing education. During her welcome, Dr. Eileen Holden, President of PSC, stressed the importance of education. “Never stop learning,” said Dr. Holden. She continued saying we should always look for opportunities to learn. “Education is something

nobody can take away from you,” she said. Dr. Holden also added, “Don’t ever, ever, ever let your integrity come into question.” She said it’s important to know what your “line in the sand is” when it comes to your core values, professional life and civic engagements. P2P is a wonderful example of EMERGE Lakeland’s commitment to learning. With professional development events as well as networking events,
EMERGE members are engaged in some form of learning on a monthly basis. The P2P program offers a select group of members an opportunity to dig deeper into the Lakeland Community; to find out more about getting involved, giving back and leaving a mark. In addition to the session on Education, P2P Participants experienced the workings of the City’s Parks and Recreation, Polk County’s commitment to nonprofit organizations and
received an inside look at larger industry. The May Graduation Event focused on Entrepreneurs and the importance of Small Business in Lakeland. Applications for the next class will be available in July. EMERGE Lakeland is a networking group of young professionals in Lakeland. The organization is a partnership of the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Central Florida.

is important to weigh out the pros and cons of returning to school. What is your motivation and what do you want to achieve upon completion? It is important to keep relevant with the constant changes in our careers, and we must always look for ways to build and develop our skills. In today’s world we can’t afford
to be complacent in our current positions. With the high rise in unemployment people are being forced to make the decision of going back to school to gain new skills. Even if you’re employed, don’t wait to be forced to go back to school, but look at education as an opportunity to develop your skills and also as a form of security. We tell
our children to get an education because we truly believe they will be more successful, but we need to take our own advice. There are many reasons people choose to go back to school. Ask yourself, “What is my reason?” The number one incentive is the expectation to earn more money. Do you need to make more
money? Maybe your reasons simply fall in line with personal goals, self gratification, professional development, marketability, to learn new skills, change in career, or to set an example for your loved ones. Whatever your reason, remember education is not like a house, car, or even a job education is a jewel that no one can take from you.
S har e a l i t t l e L a k e l a n d — new Video! The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce has just released a new video showcasing the outstanding quality of life our residents enjoy! Produced in partnership with member Kanga Marketing, the video was developed as a strategy of the Chamber’s Quality of Life Key Strategic Initiative (KSI) group in partnership with the Lakeland Convention & Visitors Bureau. KSI Chair Melinda Harrison of Watson Clinic LLP said, “This is the first time in many years employers and community members
have access to a current and vibrant visual representation of Lakeland. With regular updates to content already scheduled, this should be an ongoing asset to anyone seeking a wonderful representation of what Lakeland has to offer.” The new Lakeland video will be embedded on LakelandChamber. com for visitors to view and share. There will be two versions of the video available. A short version running less than two minutes and a longer version which runs approximately
five minutes, will offer supplements for recruiting new employees and businesses to our area, showcasing Lakeland to potential new residents, and increasing visitors who stay and play in our area. Check out the new video at LakelandChamber.com. For more information on how you and your business can take advantage of the video, please contact Jackie Johnson at (863) 6888551, Ext. 223.

Polk County School District’s Workforce Education and Career Academies continue to be one of Polk County’s best kept secrets. With more than 30 academies in operation today, and more planned for the near future, our county’s students have a gateway to one of the most broad and accessible academy programs in the nation. Polk Career Academies are small, personalized learning communities within a high school that select a subset of students and teachers for a three-to-four year span. Students enter the academy though a voluntary process and are accepted with parental knowledge and support. Benefits include: career pathways that train and educate students at all levels, opportunity for industry verification, meeting the industry need for employees in high skill, high wage, high demand career fields, coordination of local workforce training providers and educational institutions, and earning college credit in high school through dual enrollment and articulated credit. At last November’s WE3 Expo, local business and industry professionals partnered with Polk State College and the public schools of Polk County in a collaborative effort that allowed middle schools and high schools to highlight career academies and workforce 8

program offerings throughout the county. The students that were on hand demonstrated and discussed their preparation for careers in the new millennium. WE3 featured more than 40 exhibitors, and those students, who were able to interact and converse with future employers, represented the next generation of Polk County workers. Recently, Polk Academies became the recipient of a generous grant from the Ford Motor Company Foundation’s Next Generation Learning program. Because of the public support the academies have received in Polk County, Ford selected our county as one of four “hubs” in the state of Florida. The grant, totaling $200,000, was awarded with the objective to create a five-year plan that encompasses the objectives of the entire community, including education, business, civic, and governmental input. Continued community involvement, such as the 3-day planning retreat in Jacksonville with Ford NGL leadership, is a testament to the broad support the Academy program has achieved across the county. Additionally, the Lakeland Chamber has determined that education is one of its Key Strategic Initiatives, with goals of increasing member value to Chamber members,
bringing private industry expertise and learning opportunities to primary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions, and providing a system to facilitate, track, and measure outcomes of these partnerships in ways that are beneficial to each stakeholder. Polk Academies are active in this initiative, and Director John Small and his staff are working hand in hand with Chamber delegates and other community representatives to devise a system to meet these goals. Workforce Education is proud of how far its Academy program has come, but continually strives to provide students with even more innovative and robust program offerings. Future planned academies in the Lakeland area include the GEICO Business Academy of Insurance, the Biotechnology Academy at Lake Gibson, and the Multimedia and Communication Academy at Lakeland High School. Now, the idea is to ensure everyone in the community knows about the Academies, and to increase awareness and build ownership across the county. As Lakeland Chamber President Kathleen Munson recently pointed out, “Our mission is to make sure our young people stay here, and the Career Academies Program is the best asset we have.”

Small Business of the Month Committee Member Curt Wheeler (Wheeler Appraisals, LLC) presents the May Small Business of the Month Award to Cement Products & Supply Co., Inc. On hand to accept the award was (l-r) Vice President Jim Russell, President Barry Zimmerman, General Manager Gary Clements, and Controller Ron Hatfield.
10
What began in 1912 as the Florida National Vault Company (and in which name the utility bill is still received) is today Cement Products & Supply Co., Inc. 99 years later, after wars, depressions, fires, booms and busts, this Lakeland landmark continues to provide concrete block and clay brick products to Central Florida companies and individuals from its original location at 516 West Main Street near downtown. Third and second generation owners Barry
Zimmerman and Jim Russell carry on the company tradition of personalized service, incredible experience, local dispatch and “straight-shooting with both suppliers and customers. These traditions help the company continue to meet the needs of customers and to maintain its position in a challenging industry. There are few places in Lakeland you can stand without seeing a Cement Products product. In 1945, Cement Products was one of
the first investors in a newly invented block production machine. (The original handcranked machine can still be found on-site in storage.) This enabled the company to grow rapidly with the postwar baby boomer era. The company has recently developed a patented LEED-certified block product which will take the company into the new century. While contractors, developers and building owners form their primary customer base, Cement Products has been one
of the few yards to have always sold on a retail basis, even just one block or a single bag of sand. The owners maintain an active role in local civic life. Barry has played percussion in the Imperial Symphony Orchestra since 1967, and is also involved in with Lakeland Community Theatre and Theatre Winter Haven. Jim is a second generation Rotarian, active in the downtown club. Both are active at First United Methodist Church, and the
company has been a loyal Chamber member for almost 20 years. The construction business is a challenging business, and in 99 years they have certainly seen challenges! Cost control, minimizing debt, quality control, innovation, and fair treatment of all have enabled the company to near the century mark. The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce congratulates Cement Products & Supply Co., Inc. as the Small Business of the Month for May 2011.

career pathways systems for polk county adult education students

Exciting things are happening for Lakeland’s adult education students. This August all adult education students in Polk County will set their course by creating a Career Pathway. An adult career pathway includes a clear sequence of educational coursework and training credentials needed to obtain a specific career goal. By the year 2018, it is estimated that 63% of all jobs will require some postsecondary education, college or better.* In order for our growing community to be economically self sufficient, our young adults will need education beyond high school. Partnerships between adult education providers and local businesses are needed to close impending transitional gaps. The community as a whole also benefits
when education and business collaborate. Some of the advantages are: improved employment rate of citizens; greater alignment of community resources; increased income levels; strengthened business environment; reduced poverty levels, crime rates, and need for extraordinary human services. Initially, each adult student will explore career options through Florida CHOICES, an interactive program which will provide self assessments, interest inventories and planning assistance for Florida specific career clusters. As part of career exploration, job shadowing becomes a vital step for each student. Your business can invest in this program and the life of an adult student in our community by providing an opportunity for career shadowing.
Employer benefits* of Adult Career Pathways include: increased worker productivity entry level workers with technical and employability skills requiring minimal on the job training access to adequate #’s of qualified workers

The 2011 CommUnity Celebration on March 29, 2011 was honored to have the
national football league’s
Ray Lewis {of the Baltimore Ravens} serve as the keynote speaker. Speaking to the audience, Lewis was very generous and forthcoming in telling his story, from growing up in challenging circumstances to the success he now enjoys. He used five P’s (“Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance”) as the backdrop for relating stories and lessons he has learned. He was quick to mention leaders in Lakeland, in addition to family members, who supported and guided him. Kathleen High School was well represented at the
event for their famous graduate. Members of the faculty and staff were present along with members of the varsity football team. The Red Hot Voices from Kathleen High School sang the national anthem and Ray Lewis’s childhood preacher, Earl Brown of Freely Forgiven Community Church, provided the invocation. He was also in town to support the Ray Lewis Foundation Chapter in Lakeland. He has been very active in Baltimore and it is his desire to see those successes replicated in Lakeland.
01 | Members of the Kathleen High School football team visited with Ray Lewis after the event. 02 | GEICO representatives George Rogers, Regional V.P., Kelly Rohrer, Executive Assistant to the R.V.P., and Bob Morrow, Asst. V.P. presented Ray Lewis with his very own gecko. 03 | Ray Lewis, a Lakeland native, came to Lakeland to support the efforts of his Foundation and to serve as keynote speaker. The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce encourages you to attend the following event. Fellow Citizens, The greatest challenge facing our community today is unemployment. No matter what issues dominate the headlines, a mom or dad without a job creates sleepless nights, empty stomachs and broken dreams. That is why I am pleased to announce my Congressional Office’s First Annual Job Fair this June. We are lucky to have proactive and committed partners in this endeavor, such as the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and Polk Works. You and your organization are invited to participate in this event to put our citizens back to work. This event is available to your business free of charge. Those who remain committed to their fellow Floridians during these challenging times will never be forgotten by this community. I will also be hosting a VIP Breakfast prior to the Job Fair at 8:30am for the first 50 employers that register. This will be an opportunity to share the challenges and issues you face in growing your business, and how Washington can help (and/or get out of the way!). I want to personally invite you to join us at this event . Everything you need will be provided, including tables, chairs and venue. You are encouraged to set up and interact with job applicants and speak to them about your business and opportunities for employment. To register, please visit the Polk Works website at www.polkworks.org.
