THE BENEFITS OF THE STUDENT-MANAGED FARM
The Student-Managed Farm – Powered by New Holland (SMF) is about more than the crops that are grown, the fields that are tilled, and revenue generated from its harvest. It’s about the lessons learned along the way.
For SMF crop unit Assistant General Manager Emily Creusot, the opportunity to leave her family farm and get hands-on experience was what drew her to Lakeland and the Crop Technology program.
I came to Lakeland because of the SMF,” Emily explains. “I wanted that hands-on learning to build my confidence. You’re not just reading from a textbook. You actually get to go out and apply what you’re learning.”
Dealing with real-world scenarios is a huge benefit of the SMF, she said. “I've gained a lot more from SMF than I was expecting. Coming here puts you a step ahead of everyone else, especially for your future career.”
A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY.
The future of agriculture is technology. Study the cutting-edge developments in agriculture without neglecting the roots of production in our industry-driven programs.

MAKING THE MOST OF CAMPUS LIFE
Mariel Kate Macaya was new to Canada when, on the advice of a family friend, she applied to Lakeland’s Business program. She graduated in May 2024, majoring in General Business, and was awarded the Governor General’s Medal for her academic achievement at convocation.
I am more than grateful to all the people at Lakeland who helped and guided me from the beginning of my journey, from the instructors who saw the light in me when I couldn’t see it myself, to my classmates who brought more colours and adventures into my life,” she says. “At Lakeland College, multiple doors opened, leading me to conquer some of my greatest fears and step out of my tiny little box.”
Mariel credits her friends, family and instructors who helped her throughout her Lakeland journey for her success, and the life-changing experiences she had at Lakeland.

opportunities
When recent Environmental Sciences diploma graduate Nathaniel Hak toured Lakeland, he quickly realized he had found the right school.
EXPERIENCE THE INDUSTRY. MIND-BLOWING
I was instantly hooked by the idea that I could complete my program outdoors, and that my education did not have to be defined by a classroom,” Nathaniel explains. “The Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation major allowed me to gain experience in my field that directly translates to the real world. It has been awesome to take what I’ve learned in the outdoor labs and apply those concepts to my career.”
During the summers of 2023 and 2024, Nathaniel worked for Nature Saskatchewan in his hometown of Regina, Sask., where the conservation skills he acquired at Lakeland were of great use. He transferred his Lakeland credits to the University of Regina where he’s completing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology.
Make a difference in the natural world around you. Whether conserving, rehabilitating, or advocating, you’ll often leave the classroom behind and learn in the fields, forests, rivers and wetlands on and around campus.
Learn to understand the natural environment, how to protect it, how to reclaim it, and how to ensure industries can function sustainably within it.

On the FRONT LINES
Being a firefighter means dropping everything the moment a call for help comes in. Emergency Services Technology fire stream students experienced that firsthand in the spring of 2023 when Parkland County requested support dealing with an out-ofcontrol wildfire near Entwistle, Alta.
Working hands-on in the field with other fire departments during a provincial emergency was certainly an eye-opening experience to work on new skills, to come together as a team, and to achieve the real-world experience a Lakeland education is known for.
TRAIN TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT.
Prepare for an exciting career in emergency response. You’ll take classroom theory and apply it to real life scenarios at our training facility, the Emergency Training Centre. It’s one of the top training facilities in North America.
It was surreal getting to work with all those other fire departments,” Zachary Gould, Class of 2023, says. “We got to learn so much about wildland firefighting. There are a thousand different ways that you can do something right in the fire service. It was great to learn new techniques in order to stay safe and do your best to keep the fire under control.”
Learn the firefighting and first responder skills you need to make a difference on the front lines. You’ll build your hands-on experience in our facilities, putting out multi-level, grass
and industrial fires, working through vehicle extrication and rescue and providing life-saving medical care, while learning to follow orders and lead a battalion.
Hours of live scenarios on our training field set Lakeland apart from the rest. Discover what makes Lakeland a leader in emergency response training.

SHOWCASING BORDER BEAUTY
The 2024 class of Hairstyling and Esthetician students hosted the first annual Border Beauty Showcase, bringing together industry professionals and students to show off their hairstyling and makeup skills.
It was nice to be pushed out of my comfort zone and introduced to things I typically would not take an interest in,” says Kammi Feland, Class of 2024, Hairstyling. “I enjoy how handson Lakeland is; I feel like they teach us more in the lab than they do in the classroom. Having real clients to work on and the instructors' support gives us the real-world experiences we need behind the chair to feel comfortable.”
The event was an opportunity to engage with their craft beyond the classroom, with industry leaders. Students organizing the event also learned time management, teamwork and professional skills.

DISCOVER YOUR CAREER PATH WITH PRACTICUMS
Kara Mouly completed four practicums throughout the two-year Child and Youth Care Counsellor program and with each practicum, she learned more about career paths.
You really get to see what it is like to work in your field and in my case decide that you need to change your path,” says Kara. “My instructors helped me get through so many ‘career crises’ as I like to call it. They’ve helped me pave the path I am on today.”
According to Kara, Lakeland’s combination of hands-on experiences, smaller class sizes and supportive faculty provided many life lessons too. From presentation techniques to interpersonal skills, she’s taking these lessons with her as she embarks on the next step towards her dream job: child life specialist.

DESIGNING REAL-WORLD RESULTS
Brea Holt, Class of 2022, Interior Design Technology, is one of Lakeland’s National Kitchen and Bath Association student competition winners. Her beach-inspired kitchen design captured the judges’ attention for its uniqueness, earning her second place in the international competition.
It was easy for me to find a job, and I think it’s because designers recognize Lakeland. They know the standards set for us during the program. Lakeland has established a reputation for awardwinning designers.”
Brea took her education to Hometown Homes for her practicum placement. She used that experience to secure full-time employment with Redl World Class Kitchens in Saskatoon, Sask. as a cabinetry designer.

When Elaina Anderson, Class of 2019, was looking for a way to make her dreams of becoming a pharmacist come true, she felt that Lakeland’s University Transfer program was the perfect place to start. She enrolled at Lakeland, taking courses in chemistry, biology, sociology, calculus and nutrition.
University Transfer really prepared me for university. I did better in my classes because of the way the instructors taught. They really do care about your learning and want you to know the content. It got me used to what university expectations were but with better access to resources and teachers. It’s a lot easier to get used to university life without being thrown into a class of 600 people.”

COMMON SENSE WITH BISON
Yuri Montanholi, research scientist at Lakeland, has been researching methods of incorporating technology into handling bison for several years. He has been developing BisonSense, a fully autonomous system equipped with laser triggers, cameras and RFID ear tags to digitally collect data remotely with minimal impact on the bison. It’s off-grid, powered with wind and solar, with LTE connectivity.
The successful deployment of this unit negates the need for handling bison for routine procedures such as weighing,” Yuri says. “The additional data streams enable continuous monitoring of husbandry practices to ensure improved animal welfare and performance outcomes.”
Primarily funded by Alberta Innovates, the unit was developed in partnership with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, who provided technical support.
The real world doesn’t wait.
