Favorite Features of the Neighborhood & Area:
We also love that the locations conveniently just 30 minutes from I-93, 15 minutes to down town Meredith and of course just 2 minutes to downtown Center Harbor. We can easily get to ski mountains, shopping and restaurant destinations. Throughout the 50 wonderful years spent living on Lake Kanasatka we have met so many wonderful neighbors and people throughout the community. Many of the same families still live in the neighborhood today. Our children all had summer jobs while living here as well.
The lake has an active association that monitors the water quality and promotes lake stewardship through education, meetings and activities. Their website is www.Kanasatka.org.
Our property is always great to have guests over for BBQ’s and parties with easy access on and off the deck to the lawn and into the kitchen through the sliding doors. Lots of volleyball games were played in the yard, and swimming off the dock and sandy walk in waterfront. The vegetable and herb gardens have always been a treat in the summer, being able to walk right of your deck and pick what you need.
This pristine 375 acre lake was originally called Red Hill Pond, named after the hills behind its northern shore. Maps from the 1800’s give the name of the lake as Long Pond. A saw mill was located at the southern end, just across the Whittier Highway (NH Route 25) from what today is Conway’s bait shop. Large trees were cut from the woods surrounding the lake and logs were floated down the lake and dragged across the highway to the sawmill. Lake Kanasatka is fed by Wakondah Pond from the west, snow melt from surrounding hills, and many of its own springs. A dam at the Route 25 end of the lake controls the water level. Water that flows over the dam follows a narow stream into Lake Winnipesaukee. The lake is 2 miles long, .3 miles wide in most places, and has a mean depth of 20 feet. The deepest point, estimated at 48 feet, is in the widest spot, near Route 25.
