As your community college, we are committed to putting academic excellence and success within your reach. Generous friends, organizations, businesses and LMC have established these scholarships to help you succeed in achieving your educational goals.

Scholarships are designed to:

• Recognize talent, leadership and academic excellence • Provide financial assistance • Encourage you to start or continue a college education, receive training to become more employable, or advance within a particular career

What are scholarships?

Scholarships are gift funds based on high academic achievement, special talent, a particular major, or financial need. You do not have to repay scholarships.

Who is eligible?

To receive a scholarship at LMC, you must: 1) Be accepted for admission into a program leading to a degree or certificate. To be accepted to LMC you must: • Complete an Application for Admission. • Have your final high school transcripts or GED results submitted to LMC. 2) Be enrolled at least half time – six credit hours (for most scholarships). 3) Complete a scholarship essay. 4) Meet the other qualifications of the specific scholarships.

When are scholarships awarded?

You may be awarded a scholarship for the Fall and Winter semesters only, unless otherwise noted.

What do scholarships pay for?

You may use your scholarship to pay for tuition and fees only (not books), unless otherwise specified.

When should I apply?

For most Lake Michigan College scholarships, apply by March 1, 2011, for priority consideration. Applications will be accepted after that date but awards will be based on what funds are still available after priority applications have been considered.

How will I be notified?

If you receive a scholarship, you will receive a letter from the Financial Aid Office that will explain the terms of the scholarship. You will also be expected to write a letter of thanks to the donor of your scholarship.

Scholarship Descriptions Academic Mathematics Scholarship

Amount: Varies, for tuition for mathematics courses only

• Must have successfully completed Calculus I with a grade of “A” • Must be enrolled in mathematics courses at the Napier Avenue Campus • Must earn a grade of “A” in each pre-requisite math course to qualify for award at the next level of mathematics • Do not need to demonstrate financial need to qualify

Adult Scholarship Award

Amount: $250 may be used for tuition, fees and/or books

• Be music majors with preference given to piano students • Have the potential and goal to be accepted into a four-year music major program upon graduation • Complete a competitive audition process • Be full-time or part-time students • Demonstrate financial need • Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Board of Trustees Academic/Leadership Scholarship

Amount: Up to $800 per semester for four consecutive semesters (Fall & Winter only)

• Minimum 3.25 GPA • Full-time enrollment (minimum 12 credit hours Fall and Winter) • Renewable each semester provided student completes minimum of 12 credit hours and maintains 3.0 GPA • Must enroll for Fall classes by June 30 • All scholarships and grants that only cover tuition, fees or books must first be applied. • Combination of all scholarships and grants in addition to the Board of Trustees Scholarship cannot exceed the amount of tuition, fees & books. • Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

• Must perform in one of the instrumental or vocal LMC performing groups • A music audition is required with the Music Department • When applicable, a letter of recommendation from the student’s high school music teacher is required • Do not need to demonstrate financial need to qualify

Bradley J. Petigoretz Scholarship Amount: Varies

• Must reside in the LMC District of Berrien County, Covert Township, or the South Haven School District in Van Buren County • May be an incoming freshman with a minimum 3.0 GPA, OR • May be a returning LMC student with a minimum College 3.0 GPA • Must enroll full time (12 credit hours) • Must have a letter of recommendation from a high school counselor or teacher, or college instructor or staff member • Must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

• For two high school students entering college for the first time and for two adults • High school applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA, must be enrolled full time (12 credit hours), and working to complete an associate degree in an Occupational Studies program related to business • Adult applicants must have achieved a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA, must be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours per semester, and working to complete an associate degree in an Occupational Studies program or taking classes to enhance their job related skills • Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Whirlpool Hispanic Network Scholarship Amount: $1,000

• Preference may be given to students of Hispanic origin • Must demonstrate how they have worked to advance Hispanic culture and/or heritage through their involvement with, or leadership in related organizations, events and/or activities • Preference will be given to students enrolled in a business program of study • Must plan to enroll for a minimum of 6 credit hours • Must earn a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA to receive winter allocation • May be renewed for a second year if 2.5 GPA is maintained • May be first-time college student or returning student • Must demonstrate financial need • Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

Winner’s Circle Scholarship Amount: $500 to $1,000

• For high school students with minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 • For LMC students with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 • For applicants out of school for more than two years, the minimum cumulative GPA may be waived • Applicant must not be eligible for a full Pell Grant or other substantial sources of aid • Must demonstrate financial need • Must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

How to Apply for a Lake Michigan College Scholarship

1. Complete the 2011-2012 Scholarship Application Form • • • • •

Priority deadline for scholarships is March 1, 2011. However, applications will be accepted after that date. Check all scholarships for which you are applying on the back of the application. Only apply for scholarships for which you meet the criteria. You are encouraged to apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible; typically only one will be awarded but applying for more increases your chances. You may also complete the LMC Scholarship Application online at www.lakemichigancollege.edu/scholarships

2. Attach your essay to this application that answers the question:

What is your career goal and what experiences have led you to this?

Your essay is to be 300 to 800 words in length. Word process or type your essay. Use double-spacing and a readable font style and size. Essays are evaluated on content, composition, style, organization, clarity, and mechanics.

3. Have an Application for Admission on file at Lake Michigan College

Apply online by going to www.lakemichigancollege.edu and clicking on Apply to LMC online. Applications are also available in Lake Michigan College class schedules.

4. Have your high school transcript on file at Lake Michigan College

• You may obtain a copy from your guidance office and attach it to this application in a sealed, official high school envelope. • You can request that your high school guidance office send us a copy directly.

5. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (if required by the scholarship for which you are applying) • You can complete this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. • The code for Lake Michigan College is 002277. • FAFSA will then send your results directly to us.

Make sure you answer the question. Revise. Editing takes time. Spell check doesn’t always help. Be yourself and be original. Word choice is important in your compostition for clarity. Big words don’t necessarily mean big scholarships. Spend most time on the introduction and make body paragraphs related to it. Use transition. A good ending is important. Leave it alone for a while. Go back later and take another look. Give your draft to others to review. Revise, revise, and revise!
