Scholarships are designed to:
• Recognize talent, leadership and academic excellence • Provide financial assistance • Encourage you to start or continue a college education, receive training to become more employable, or advance within a particular career
What are scholarships?
Scholarships are gift funds based on high academic achievement, special talent, a particular major, or financial need. You do not have to repay scholarships.
Who is eligible?
To receive a scholarship at LMC, you must: 1) Be accepted for admission into a program leading to a degree or certificate. To be accepted to LMC you must: • Complete an Application for Admission. • Have your final high school transcripts or GED results submitted to LMC. 2) Be enrolled at least half time – six credit hours (for most scholarships). 3) Complete a scholarship essay. 4) Meet the other qualifications of the specific scholarships.
When are scholarships awarded?
You may be awarded a scholarship for the Fall and Winter semesters only, unless otherwise noted.
What do scholarships pay for?
You may use your scholarship to pay for tuition and fees only (not books), unless otherwise specified.
When should I apply?
For most Lake Michigan College scholarships, apply by March 1, 2011, for priority consideration. Applications will be accepted after that date but awards will be based on what funds are still available after priority applications have been considered.
How will I be notified?
If you receive a scholarship, you will receive a letter from the Financial Aid Office that will explain the terms of the scholarship. You will also be expected to write a letter of thanks to the donor of your scholarship.

How to Apply for a Lake Michigan College Scholarship
1. Complete the 2011-2012 Scholarship Application Form • • • • •
Priority deadline for scholarships is March 1, 2011. However, applications will be accepted after that date. Check all scholarships for which you are applying on the back of the application. Only apply for scholarships for which you meet the criteria. You are encouraged to apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible; typically only one will be awarded but applying for more increases your chances. You may also complete the LMC Scholarship Application online at www.lakemichigancollege.edu/scholarships
2. Attach your essay to this application that answers the question:

Your essay is to be 300 to 800 words in length. Word process or type your essay. Use double-spacing and a readable font style and size. Essays are evaluated on content, composition, style, organization, clarity, and mechanics.
3. Have an Application for Admission on file at Lake Michigan College
Apply online by going to www.lakemichigancollege.edu and clicking on Apply to LMC online. Applications are also available in Lake Michigan College class schedules.
4. Have your high school transcript on file at Lake Michigan College
• You may obtain a copy from your guidance office and attach it to this application in a sealed, official high school envelope. • You can request that your high school guidance office send us a copy directly.

Make sure you answer the question. Revise. Editing takes time. Spell check doesn’t always help. Be yourself and be original. Word choice is important in your compostition for clarity. Big words don’t necessarily mean big scholarships. Spend most time on the introduction and make body paragraphs related to it. Use transition. A good ending is important. Leave it alone for a while. Go back later and take another look. Give your draft to others to review. Revise, revise, and revise!
