The Wine Industry PROFILE Michigan’s grape growers (viticulturists) and winemakers (enologists) are passionate about producing first-rate wines from fruits that thrive in our soils. Michigan winemakers enjoy national and international recognition for their excellent wines and many are expanding their offerings to include brandies, vodkas, hard ciders, meads, and more. Furthermore, Michigan has become a wine destination as tourists flock to our wineries to enjoy wine tasting and other food and wine experiences and events.

GROWTH Michigan is home to over 100 wineries, producing more than 1.3 million gallons of wine annually, primarily from grapes grown in Michigan. The Michigan wine industry contributes more than $300 million annually to the state’s economy. Most of Michigan’s wine grapes are grown within 25 miles of Lake Michigan. The outlook for local winemakers and vineyard managers is very promising as the Southwest Michigan wine industry continues to mature and expand. Source: Michigan Grape & Wine Industry Council
