Grindstaff says he’s a southern boy born and raised, family originally from Missouri, but his career in the newspaper business took him all over the world, including seven years in Washington, DC, and five years in Tokyo, Japan. He lived in Wisconsin for nine years, where he managed a community newspaper group of 11 publications. He and his wife relocated to Osage Beach last year.

In “Slade,” the main character writes a self-help book and becomes an unlikely celebrity and spiritual guru to the Hollywood elite, spawning a cult he wants nothing to do with. The unconventional storytelling technique, dark humor, cultural satire, and cast of quirky characters will appeal to readers who enjoy Chuck Palahniuk and John Irving.

Grindstaff’s previous novels include “Carry Me Away” and “Hannah’s Voice,” both award-winning and critically acclaimed books. He also is a highly sought-after fiction editor and writing instructor.

His publisher released a collection of Grindstaff’s awardwinning short stories on May 16, titled “June Bug Gothic.”

About the book

Slade Bennington is an unlikely cult hero. Severely injured in a car crash 29 years earlier that left him with a new outlook on life, his life story becomes a best-selling book, which is turned into a box office hit film. His pithy musings about life spur a nationwide following of fans who study his writings like holy scriptures. Slade becomes a spiritual guru to the celebrity in-crowd – the Shaman to the Stars.

While thousands adore Slade, others call him a Svengali or Rasputin-like character who controls and manipulates his clients. And someone lurks in the shadows, seeking revenge.

“Slade” is an offbeat literary/satire novel that unfolds in a series of interviews with the main character and those who know him best, plus snippets from Slade’s books and news reports. The unconventional structure, dark humor, and cast of quirky characters will appeal to readers of Chuck Palahniuk and John Irving.
