T

he International Union of Operating Engineers Local148 is hosting its 35th annual Bass Tournament to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of St. Louis. The tournament will be held September 10 at PB2 on Lake of the Ozarks. A group of dedicated and energized Local 148 volunteers, both active and retired members, have donated a weekend of their time to raise money for charities dedicated to battling childhood diseases. Since its inception at Sterett Creek on Truman Lake in 1988, this one-of-a-kind tournament has raised over $1.8 million for Cystic Fibrosis research, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, and now the Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis. The Ronald McDonald House of St. Louis provides a home away from home for families of seriously-ill children, and support to organizations that serve the needs of children. St. Louis’ three Ronald McDonald Houses offer parents and family members a respite from hospital waiting rooms 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their houses provide the essential comforts of home. The tournament is designed to allow your everyday fisherman the opportunity to have a fun day of fishing along with helping a great cause. The grand prize is $2,500, all you have to do is register as a fisherman. You don’t even have to catch a fish to qualify to win. There will also be cash prizes based upon 10 percent of the number of boats fishing. The $150 entry fee includes a variety of attendance prizes, brats and complimentary beverages Friday evening, and a pork steak dinner with complimentary beverages Saturday afternoon. VACATION NEWS 13

GOLF by Paul Leahy, Director of Golf at The Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort

Improvements at Lake area golf courses

S

ummer is in full swing and lots of exciting things are going on at Lake of the Ozarks. Golf continues to be as popular as ever. Tiger Woods is playing golf again and golf clubs are in high demand. The supply chain issues of 2021 have subsided from a golf club standpoint and the Taylor Made Stealth line of drivers, fairway woods and hybrids have been some of the hottest clubs on the market. Its Carbon Twist Face has replaced the titanium faces that have been the predominant technology for the last 20 years. Golf balls are still an issue however, with the shortage of a product called Surlyn. Surlyn is used in all golf balls, even premium balls such as the Titleist Pro V line of balls. With the shortage of this product golf ball prices have increased and your local range is having a difficult time replenishing their range balls. Locally, several facilities got a new fleet of golf carts in 2022. The Lodge of Four Seasons, Osage National and Lake Valley all received their new carts. Osage National received a new fleet of EZGO Electric carts with GPS Pace Technology included. New to this version is the incorporation of the GolfLogix technology to the GPS system. Incorporating this technology into the built-in GPS unit on the cart enables the golfer to see a 3D heat map of each green as you approach. What these new maps show the golfer is the slopes and contours of the green complex as you hit your approach and get ready to putt. It has been available on the GolfLogix app previously and now it has been installed onto the cart’s unit. I used it for the first time this summer and it was very cool technology. These new carts can also regulate pace of play by allowing the course to speed up or slow down a cart during certain course conditions and map out areas of the course that are off limits. If a cart travels into these restricted areas it will automatically shut down 14 VACATION NEWS

the cart and it will have to be placed in reverse to exit the area. The course can also send messages to specific carts, and track pace of play. It provides the course a lot of flexibility and enhances the golfer’s experience. Lake Valley and The Lodge of Four Seasons have GPS units as well on their fleet of carts this season. Junior golf continues to be an area of importance around the country and in the Lake area. Eldon Country Club and Lake Valley Golf Club continue to offer junior leagues for golfers 14 and under during the summer. This fun, learning atmosphere also has a competitive feel as you compete as a team against other teams in a scramble format. They learn the fundamentals and etiquette of the game in a fun, team atmosphere. Junior golfers can also play in multiple Missouri Golf Association Junior golf tournaments hosted by multiple local clubs throughout the summer. Details can be found at www. mogolf.org. Lake Valley has hired a new assistant golf professional for the 2022 season. Caleb Ward spent the last several years at Osage National before relocating to Lake Valley. Lake Valley remodeled their clubhouse in 2021 and has been heavily focused on showcasing their improvements by hosting numerous weddings and baby showers. If you need a special place for any occasions, give them a call at Lake Valley. Hank England has returned to the Lodge of Four Seasons as their new PGA Head Golf Professional, after previous stints at Margaritaville Lake Resort and Redfield Golf Club. Golf instruction and club fitting continues to very popular. Many fine PGA certified instructors can be found in the Lake area. Shane Blankenship at Old Kinderhook does numerous golf schools and gives hundreds of individual lessons each season. His reputation as a teacher is widely recognized and he has students as far away as St.

Louis make the trip to gain his knowledge. Tory Hayes, 1996 Gateway PGA Teacher of the Year, has relocated back to the Lake and has brought his talents to Margaritaville Lake Resort this season. Many facilities have also invested resources into golf simulators over the last few seasons to continue their instruction programs and club fitting. Eldon Country Club has two indoor simulators with PGA Professional Michel Cummings heading up the instructional and fitting programs. Osage National is home to another simulator with PGA Professional Derek Akers leading their team of PGA Professionals in their fitting and teaching endeavors. The LOZ Golf Lounge is also available with two simulators to test your game on multiple courses. Tournament season is in full swing with local charity outings, Missouri Golf Association events and club tournaments being contested in the area. A full list of Missouri Golf Association events can be found at www.mogolf. org. Some of the local MGA events are the Parent/Child Championship on August 1 at the Club at Porto Cima, and MGA Senior series events on August 15 at Lake Valley and August 16 at the Club at Porto Cima. Old Kinderhook will host a two day MGA Senior series event August 30 and 31. Lake Valley Country Club has three open events coming up: the Ladies Scramble July 9 and 10, a Men’s Summer two-manan scramble August 6 and 7, and their fall couples scramble October 1 and 2. Margaritaville Lake Resort will host their annual Parrot Head Open twoperson scramble event August 27 and 28. Details on these and more can be found on the courses websites. There is always something new and exciting happening at your favorite local course, so get out and enjoy the rest of summer. It will be gone before you know it.

BOATING Simple safety tips for water sports enthusiasts

B

MetroCreative

odies of water like lakes, rivers and oceans often elicit fond memories of fun times spent under the sun. Safety should always be a priority when spending time on the water, especially when participating in water sports, including swimming and water skiing. According to the World Health Organization, more than 40 people die by drowning every hour of every day, which equates to around 372,000 deaths each year. Many of those deaths, the vast majority of which occur in low- or middle-income countries, are preventable, and safety is at the core of drowning

BOATING prevention. Though drowning incidents are not as prevalent in the United States and Canada as they are elsewhere in the world, the popularity of water sports in both countries underscores the importance of revisiting the various ways to stay safe when out on the water. • Take water sports lessons. The carefree nature of spring and summer can make it easy for water sports enthusiasts to forgo lessons before trying their hands at water skiing and wakeboarding. But such lessons can teach people techniques that can keep them safe on the water. Courses teach everything from how to get up and out of the water to how to properly handle a tow rope. They also can teach boaters how to navigate waters while towing skiers, tubers and wakeboarders. • Learn hand signals and go over them before getting in the water. The National Safety Council emphasizes the importance of basic hand signals, which can be used to help boaters communicate with the people they’re towing. Hand signals are vital because water sports tend to be noisy, so nonverbal communication may be the only way boaters can communicate with the people they’re towing. Signals can be used to communicate anything from directions of turns to speed requests to the condition of the person being towed. A list of hand signals can be found at www.boaterexam.com/safety/safety-common-hand-signals.aspx. • Inspect tow lines. The NSC advises inspecting tow lines prior to beginning. Such inspections can confirm that tow lines are not caught in the propeller or wrapped around anyone before the activity begins. • Wait for the propeller to stop before getting back on the boat. People being towed should always wait for propellers to stop before climbing back into the boat. It doesn’t take long for propellers to stop, and those extra few seconds can dramatically reduce risks for accidents or injuries. • Avoid water sports at night. Visibility is compromised once the sun goes down. That can make it hard for boaters to see any obstacles that might appear in the water, and it also makes it very difficult for them to communicate with the people they’re towing. As a result of such difficulties, the NSC urges water sports enthusiasts to only engage in such activities during daylight hours. Water sports make summer even more fun. Safety should always be the utmost priority for anyone involved in such activities. - Article provided by MetroCreative July 15 - 28, 2022

ringing major artists to the Lake area does not come easy. Just ask Tom Abbett and Mary Kay von Brendel, just part of the team behind Ozarks Amphitheater, a 10,256 seat outdoor amphitheater located in Camdenton. By the time musicians take to the 5,000 square foot stage, months of planning have taken place to make sure each show goes off without a hitch. All that hard work has paid off. This season the venue is hosting its busiest season yet.

ENTERTAINMENT Ozarks Amphitheater had a rough start for many years after it was built in 1993. It sat vacant for at least five years. Twice owners tried to get the venue up and running but failed. It fell under a state of disrepair until an investor from Colorado decided to revamp it. Bill Carle had experience as a concessionaire at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, along with his business partner Robert Mein who understood the food and beverage side of the business. Carle purchased Ozarks Amphitheater in 2013, renovated it in 2014, opened in 2015, and has been hosting world-class entertainment ever since. According to Abbett, Director of Business Development at Ozarks Amphitheater, the Alabama concert in 2018 put Lake of the Ozarks on the map both locally and in Nashville as a viable venue. Big-name artists took note and started booking performances at the Lake. Kane Brown, Five Finger Death Punch and Shinedown have been extremely popular for fans at the Lake. Classic rock shows last year included ZZ-Top, REO Speedwagon, Styx and Three Dog Night. Charlie Daniels has played several times as well as Miranda Lambert, Katy Perry and Blues Traveler. The number of shows and events hosted each year varies. In 2022, show organizers anticipate at least 24 shows, up from 17 in 2021. Behind the Scenes

Both Abbett and von Brendel, who is the Director of Operations at Ozarks Amphitheater, work to bring bigger names to the venue each year. They collaborate on booking acts, along with co-promoter Mammoth Presents from Kansas City. That partnership started in 2018 with Alabama and has flourished ever since, von Brendel said. “My goal is for Ozarks Amphitheater to rival Red Rocks as a ‘destination’ and a ‘must-play’ venue for the larger touring acts,” von Brendel said. “We are now in Phase 2 of the business plan working toward expanding parking, capacity, infrastructure July 15 - 28, 2022

and being able to accommodate the larger acts that are on our bucket list.” von Brendel has a background in music, having worked with JazzTrax Music Festivals on Catalina Island and Big Bear, Calif. for several years and being an artist manager for national touring Jazz musicians prior to moving to the Lake area. She tracked down Carle to request the opportunity to bring the Amphitheater back to life after inviting herself on stage where she sang the National Anthem and was overwhelmed by the amazing acoustics of the venue. “Mary Kay’s drive, creativity and commitment to the community is one of the reasons the venue has gotten to where it is today,” Abbett said. Abbett was in real estate at the Lake before being recruited to work backstage security. As he got more involved in the business, he became stage manager and started booking talent in 2017. “I have a mind for business and a body for manual labor..and it takes both of those to make the venue work,” Abbett jokes. Abbett is involved in the Lake Race, Shootout on the Strip, the Guinness World Record attempt Boat Parade and many other communitycentered events that help promote the area in general. They strive to be ambassadors of the Lake of the Ozarks, making sure that not only do shows run smoothly but that Ozarks Amphitheater has an economic and social impact in the area. The venue has hosted special events including the Dogwood Festival, the Can Am Games Opening Ceremonies, Kelly Miller Circus and its annual events Pumpkin Chunkin’ Palooza and Crossover Music Festival. “We really would like to thank the community for supporting us and having a real interest in its success and growth,” von Brendel said. “Without the community’s support we would not have been able to grow to where we have, and we look forward to many more years of live entertainment at Lake of the Ozarks.”

Where to float in Missouri and around the Lake area

Summer is a great time to cool off on a Missouri float. MDC encourages people to check out great places in central and northeast Missouri for their next float trip. MDC

T

he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages people to cool off and discover nature on Missouri’s rivers and streams this summer. Here are five great opportunities to paddle and float in central and northeast Missouri. Learn more about these, and other public paddling opportunities at https://mdc.mo.gov/ discover-nature/places, download the MO Outdoors App for mobile devices, or get a copy of A Paddler’s Guide to Missouri from the MDC Nature Shop online at mdcnatureshop.com. Always paddle safely on Missouri waters: • Wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) • Make a float plan and tell someone where you’re going and when you plan to return • Use caution and yield to larger boats • Pack food, water, flashlight, dry clothes, and anything else you may need if your trip takes longer than planned. DuPont Reservation Conservation Area

If you want to try your hand at paddling on the Mississippi River, put in at US Lock and Dam No. 22 south of Saverton and float for around seven miles to the take-out at Dupont Reservation Conservation Area. For a longer float, put in at the DuPont Reservation Conservation Area and then float around 12 miles to the takeout at Louisiana Riverfront in the town of Louisiana. Watch for bald eagles and osprey as you go. To learn more about paddling opportunities on the Mississippi River, visit the National Recreation Trail Database at Americantrails.org. ON THE COVER Gasconade River

For a tame, daylong float on the Gasconade River, putin at Rollins Ferry Access and take-out at Pointers Creek Access. This 7-mile float offers stunning views of steep bluffs and forested hills. Both accesses offer primitive camping sites and disabled-accessible privies. Learn more about the Gasconade River at https://mdc. mo.gov/fishing/fishing-prospects/areas/gasconade-riverphelpspulaski-county. Rebel’s Cove Conservation Area

Nearly five miles of the Chariton River run through Rebel’s Cove Conservation Area, near Livonia. This portion of the river is known locally as “The Narrows,” because the river makes a 2.5-mile loop around Parson’s Bend in the center of the area. At this point the river doubles back to within a few hundred feet of itself. Two float trip options start on this conservation area: • 4-mile float — put-in at access on Blackberry Trail; take-out at access on North 135th • 8-mile float — put-in at access on North 135th Street; take-out at Archangel Access on US Highway 136, east of Livonia. Learn more about Rebel’s Cove Conservation Area at https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/places/rebels-coveconservation-area.

Taylors Landing Access

MDC recently reopened Taylors Landing Access on the Missouri River in a new location. Put in here and float down to the river parking lot at Eagle Bluffs Conservation Area (around 8 miles). Learn more about Taylors Landing online at https://mdc.mo.gov/discovernature/places/taylors-landing-access. Paddle up and float down in northeast Missouri streams

The rivers in northeast Missouri have a gentle current, which allows paddlers to paddle up stream and float down. This is a great option for people who don’t want to shuttle vehicles. Find river accesses by visiting https://mdc. mo.gov/discover-nature/places.

Canoeing and kayaking on the Lake can be difficult depending on how busy it is so many people flock to calm and cool rivers during the summer. To keep it close to home, pack up the cooler and explore the Big Niangua River by tubing, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. Located in Macks Creek, Mother Nature’s Riverfront Retreat offers three and five mile float trips so you can enjoy a tranquil experience and the beauty of the surrounding area. Rentals are $25 for a single kayak and $30 for a canoe/tandem kayak for the 3-mile float; and $35 for a single kayak, $40 for a canoe/tandem kayak, and $15 for a tube for the 5-mile float. A $10 boat/canoe put-in/take-out fee is also charged. If you plan to stay overnight, camping, camper rentals, cabins, RV hookups and a bunkhouse for large groups will give you a place to lay your head. (www.mothernaturesriverfrontretreat.com) If you are staying close to the Lake area, many of the float trip outfitters are located outside of the Camdenton/Macks Creek area, in close proximity to the Big and Little Niangua rivers. There are currently no outfitters providing floats on the Little Niangua River. Cedar Camp Outfitters, in Macks Creek has primitive camping, cabins, RV sights, and canoe and kayak rentals along the Little Niangua but are closed as they undergo renovations this season. Adventures Float Trips in Tunas, has camping, boat rentals, cabin rentals and float trips booked through Majestic Views Floats. Paddle the Big Niangua on a 7-mile or book an overnight 14-mile trip. If coming from the Lake area you’ll head to Majestic Views Floats at 1610 St. Hwy. 64, or they can pick you up at one of the nearby campsites. 8-man, 6-man and 4-man rafts are available, along with tubes, canoes, tandem kayaks, single-man kayaks, and paddleboards. Prices and booking available online. They are open year-round. (www.mo-adventures.com) A quick search on the internet will result in a number of outfitters in the Lebanon/Bennet Springs area. This is a popular spot for camping and float trips.

Float Trip Tips We might be stating the obvious here, but the following are some of our best float trip tips to keep you safe and having fun on the river! • If booking over the weekend or during a holiday, it’s likely to be busy, crowded and noisy. We recommend going during the week if possible to avoid large crowds. Also, some places offer discounts during the weekday. • Come prepared. Some outfitters have stores selling items in case you have forgotten anything at home. Pack extra sunscreen; water and other beverages; koozies; sunglasses; plenty of snacks/lunch; bug spray; and a dry bag to keep your cell phone, towels and other items from getting soaked. Float trips close to the Lake

lock bags are a must! And don’t forget a few bungee cords to strap down the cooler and other items. Keep an extra set of clothes and towels in the car if you are not camping. • If you are new to floating, think twice about bringing your dog along. If bringing a pet, make sure they are comfortable around water and will not run away. Do not tie them onto the canoe/raft with their leash. I’ve seen on more than one occasion a canoe/raft tip over on the river with the dog still attached. Consider putting a life jacket on them as well. • Make sure not to book a float trip that is too long for your party. If you plan to pull up along the bank a lot, have kids or only want to spend a few hours outdoors, take the shorter routes. You’d be surprised how much paddling you might have to do if the river isn’t flowing (which all depends on recent rainfall). • In many cases overnight trips are available, which can be a great experience. You’ll have to bring everything with you to pitch a tent and spend the night along the bank. • Don’t bring anything valuable. There’s a fine line between bringing too little and too much. Remember, you just might hit a log that tips your canoe over. You’ll have to scramble to pluck your possessions out of the river and might not see some of your belongings ever again. • Some of our favorite float trip foods include: Cheese sticks, beef jerky, cuties/fruit, nuts/trail mix, sandwiches, chips/ Pringles, fried chicken, salami, fruit snacks, and granola bars. Make sure you leave room for plenty of ice in the cooler. • The preferred footwear are river shoes. They are affordable to buy. Don’t wear sandals/flip flops. Trust me…. • If you are not camping/staying anywhere overnight make sure you have a sober driver to bring you home safely. RESTAURANT PROFILE by Vicki Wood

From food truck to restaurant

A

KC-style BBQ opened recently on the Westside, quickly becoming a worker’s favorite. “Why?” you may ask. On a quiet Tuesday, the joint was packed with construction workers and other laborers. The reason could be the hearty meals at ridiculously good prices. Pairing cornbread with pulled pork is Redd’s theme as proudly announced on their T-shirts and logos declaring “Redd’s BBQ Porks your muffins.” Redd’s sweet-style cornbread adds a perfect balance to their original sweet sauce and smoky shredded pig. It starts right off as “Redd’s Famous Pulled Pork Cornbread Muffins” as the first appetizer on the menu. Redd’s BBQ and Catering has been around Laurie for a year in a food trailer pulling up to festivals such as the LOTO Food Truck Festival. Recently, the food trailer has been put aside for catering and a new restaurant opened on Hwy. 5 in Laurie across from Bryant’s Osage Outdoors. Owner Randy Deaver is a Maysville, Missouri native, honing his KC-style BBQ chops for many years before bringing his unique brand of smoked goodness to the Westside. He features a few “craft BBQ” style items on his menu which sets him apart from your everyday smoking meat business and they are very popular with customers he reports. Redd’s “Pig Bowl” is a colossal pile of sweet yellow cornbread covered in their signature white cheddar mac and cheese. Instead of “pig” you can choose other meats, and this trip smoked turkey was the choice to put Redd’s to the test. Turkey and chicken can run dry when smoked. Redd’s BBQ did not disappoint. The turkey had a good smoke and was tender and moist. Adding Redd’s Spicy Sauce on top gives the dish a kick and balance. But you can have the pig bowl with pulled pork, brisket, turkey, or chicken. It’s a dish made for sharing, in its extra-large pasta bowl. The pig bowl is a fill you up, be extra hungry kind of hearty meal. The “Fat Boy,” one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes, is a gigantic sandwich piled on an herb bun, with brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. But if that isn’t enough, it’s topped with their saucy baked beans and coleslaw. There are a few other different things on the menu that set Redd’s apart from the multitude of BBQ joints at Lake of the Ozarks. First, the sauce is house made. There is an original and a spicy. Both are smoky with paprika and chili powder. The spicy sauce has a tang and deeper smoke flavor, with the perfect side heat. Redd’s makes a line of BBQ rubs which he sells online at www.facebook.com/reddsrub. Second, the nod to “craft BBQ,” specialty items. Loaded BBQ potatoes, the BBQ bowl, cheese curds, trendy white mac and cheese, and cornbread. Craft BBQ pays homage to all the great American southern dishes from the best of soul food influences. Third, Redd’s brought back a salad bar for the Westside, whether it’s all-you-can-eat or a one-trip bowl. Never fear, the menu is mainly comprised of good old BBQ standards such as half and whole racks of ribs, sliced brisket, and pulled pork. Fries and onion rings are available on the side, or if you like it cold, cole slaw. The family packs are handy and thrifty for feeding a crowd. For beverage service, bottled and domestic beer is only $3, and Redd’s also stocks wine and seltzers. 28 VACATION NEWS

Randy Deaver hasn’t parked the food trailer, though. It’s being utilized at the nearby Ozark International Raceway, feeding staff and drivers. Deaver is their caterer of choice. When asked how the racetrack business is, Deaver says they love his BBQ. “They order from the trailer on the track, the drivers. There aren’t a lot of fans yet. But they order my food for their meetings and private events for drivers,” Deaver shared.
