S OCK H OP
The last couple of years have most of the country longing for simpler times when drag racing was seen on the Strip, drive-in and 3D movies were all the rage, friends hung out at the local drugstore soda fountain,
everyone owned a hula hoop, Elvis Presley had girls fainting, and rock ‘n’ roll blared from car speakers. Whether those days bring back fond memories or you just wish you had been old enough at the time to remember them, you can experience the 1950s for one special night this spring.
Almost since its inception, Newcomers/Longtimers has supported the Lake area through a variety of fundraising activities, the largest being the annual Home Tour. The Home Tour has not been held since the pandemic began and until it can resume, the organization is hosting a Sock Hop in its place to raise money. It will be held April 1 at the Osage Beach Elks Lodge from 5-9 p.m. Proceeds from the Sock Hop will be added to the Newcomers/Longtimers scholarship fund. Each year Newcomers/ Longtimers awards scholarships to students wishing to complete their education or return to school. Now more than ever, students are struggling to find the financial resources to complete their education. By providing scholarships, Newcomers/Longtimers help make that possible, so polish up those saddle shoes, pull out that letterman sweater, and step back into the 1950s for a night of flashback memories and support of the Newcomers/Longtimers scholarship fund.

Launching your boat for the season
Lake of the Ozarks has over 70,000 docks and over 160,000 boats that are here year-round. Add the number of visitors and tournament fishermen and the number of boats greatly increases. So does the congestion at the boat ramps and marinas.
When using a boat ramp, here are some steps to ensure that you have a smooth experience at the boat launch.
The first step is to get your boat ready away from the launch area itself. This will make sure that you aren’t blocking any other boaters who are waiting to use the launch — keeping everybody happy.
Prepare your boat away from the ramp to avoid creating unnecessary delays at the launch area.
Some of the steps you can take care of before approaching the ramp include:
• Removing all the tie-downs, with the exception of the; winch line.
• Loading any additional supplies and equipment into the boat;
• Inserting the drain plug; Disconnecting the trailer’s brake lights – so you don’t burn out any bulbs;
• Removing the motor travel supports, if used; and
• Putting the trim up to prevent hitting the prop when launching.
• If you’re launching the boat by yourself, you can attach a line to the bow to steady the boat upon its release. If you have two persons launching the boat, and one is staying in the boat, you may not need a bow line.
Launching Your Boat
Now that you’re ready for launch, approach the boat ramp and back the trailer into the water.
Go far enough so that your trailer tires are in the water but not the axle bearings. The cooling water intake holes on the lower unit of the engine should be submerged.
At this point, apply the parking brake on your towing vehicle. If at all possible, you want to keep the wheels of your towing vehicle out of the water.
Now, gradually release the winch line and slowly reverse the boat off of the trailer and into the water.
Once in the water, secure the boat to the dock and promptly move your vehicle and trailer away from the launch. This will avoid blocking any boaters waiting to use the launch.
If you anticipate any kind of engine problems, it’s a good idea to start the engine and let it warm up while your boat is still attached to the winch line, and before reversing the boat off of the trailer. If your engine doesn’t start, it’s a lot easier to retrieve your boat if it is still on the trailer.
Remember to follow good boating etiquette by preparing your boat away from the launch area to prevent unnecessary delays for other boaters. Remember, like when launching your boat, the proper etiquette is to unload all your extra fuel and equipment away from the launch, so as not to delay other boaters.
Retrieving your boat
When it’s time to retrieve your boat, it’s a great idea to have someone at the boat launch to ‘spot’ for you. This is especially important if you are dealing with a steep boat ramp.
Both you and your spotter should be keeping an eye out for any pedestrians or other boats in the area.
Get your towing vehicle and trailer ready and then wait for your turn.
When it’s your turn to retrieve your boat, back your trailer into the water until two-thirds of its bunks or rollers are submerged. Like launching your boat, you should keep your towing vehicle’s wheels out of the water unless absolutely necessary. Next, attach a bow line to the boat in order to steady the retrieval process.
Now maneuver or cautiously drive your boat close enough to attach the winch line.
Once the winch line is attached, shut off the engine and tilt the engine up. Crank the winch line to pull the boat up the trailer. Stay out of the direct path of the winch line in case it breaks.
Once your boat is well secured, tow your trailer out of the water and away from the boat ramp; out of the way of others.
Now it’s time to begin your preparation for the road. Remember to remove your drain plug, pump or drain any water out of the bilge, and drain the live-wells or bait-wells if you have them.
To stop the spread of aquatic species, it’s also important that you clean your boat before you leave the ramp area. Some states have specific requirements that must be followed to stop the spread of aquatic species, so check the regulations in the state where you are boating. As a rule, you should always remove all plant materials from your boat.

Lake area golf events for charity
HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open benefitting Lake Regional Health System is one of the lake’s favorite traditions. Play stretches across two days — Sunday, May 21, and Monday, May 22 — and two Lake of the Ozarks premier golf courses — The Cove and Porto Cima.
“All proceeds from this year’s event will support local heart care,” said Peter Brown, chairman of the HK’s committee. “Our community is blessed to have an exceptional heart program right here at Lake Regional and ensuring access to the latest heart care technology and advancements is essential.”
In addition to golf, the schedule of events includes a Rooftop Party at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at The Lodge of Four Seasons Rooftop Bar for
all players and select sponsors. Saxophonist Michael Byington will provide entertainment, and guests will enjoy signature chef food stations, as well as live and silent auctions. There also will be a virtual auction for the public at HKsGolf.com.
Two Days of Play
The format for HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open will be a split style of play with fourperson teams. There will be a scramble on Sunday and shamble on Monday. According to USGA. com, a scramble is played with four-person teams. Each player plays from the teeing area on each hole; one of the tee shots is selected, and all the players play their second shots from that spot. One of the second shots is then selected, and all players play their third shots from that
GOLF
spot, and so on until the ball is holed.
In a shamble format, members of the team each hit a tee shot and select the best drive. From there each player plays their own ball and the lowest score is the team score for the hole.
Sunday’s scramble will be at The Cove, the Lodge’s signature course, designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Sr. The 18-hole, par-71 championship course challenges guests with its rolling greens, 65 bunkers and signature hole 4.
Monday’s shamble will be at Porto Cima Golf Course, Missouri’s only Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course. Golf Digest consistently ranks this private course in Missouri’s Top 10 golf courses.
There also will be several contests along the course, as well as a million dollar hole in one challenge on Porto Cima. An awards luncheon will wrap up the event on Monday.
Be a Sponsor
More than a dozen sponsorship packages are available, from a comprehensive Title Sponsorship package with VIP benefits and recognition throughout the weekend to hole sponsorships that come with tee box signage.
To learn more about sponsorship opportunities, call Trish Creach, executive director of Lake Regional Health Foundation, at 573-348-8376.

Shop Til’ You
The shopping event of the year brings Lake area boutiques together for a special spring and fall crawl.
Interested in doing a little retail therapy? The Lake of the Ozarks Boutique Crawl is the best shopping event at the Lake, and it only happens twice a year. The crawl brings 16 area boutiques together to host a one-day shopping extravaganza. The event will be held April 1, and again later in the fall, when boutiques open their stores to offer the perfect girls day out. Cocktails and other beverages, food, sales and promotions, and other entertainment can be found by stopping at each participating location.
Krystin Smith has been one of the organizers since it began five years ago. The event has grown every year drawing in as many 2,000 people for last years fall crawl. Smith, who owns Spit Arrow Boutique on the Bagnell Dam Strip, says the stores always make the day fun for shoppers. At her boutique they have a prize wheel that customers spin for a chance to win prizes.
Smith says that in order for boutiques to participate they need to be open year-round, be in business for at least a year, offer a storefront and be in the Camdenton, Osage Beach, Lake Ozark or Eldon community.
Some crawlers hire chauffeurs, party buses and limousines to take them around to each store so they can indulge in libations and concentrate on finding a few new
items for their wardrobe. Boutique owners say many people are from out of town and make it a weekend getaway.
At Mem’s Boutique in Camdenton, owner Amie Marie estimates she had 600 people walk through the door during the fall crawl last year. She saw much the same type of crowd — groups of girlfriends enjoying the day.
“I love the atmosphere of the crawl,” she said. “Everyone is there to shop and have a good time. It’s just a really fun day.”
Some stores roll out the red carpet and spend weeks preparing, serving special cocktails, putting out snacks, and stocking store shelves with the latest items found at market.
Brenda Cribb, the owner of Shabby Chic Boutique and the Front Porch of Shabby Chic located at the Landing on Main Street, attends four or five big markets in the United States each year to hand select the merchandise that will be sold in her stores. They will be ready for the spring crawl with unique styles, one-of-a-kind accessories, and a selection of clothing with a romantic, casual flair.
Cribb said getting to collaborate with the other local boutiques and seeing shoppers walk into stores they may not have checked out before makes all the planning and preparation leading up to the crawl worth it.
SHOPPING
Her stores will offer signature drinks at both locations, a big charcuterie board, and a free gift to all customers who make a purchase.
“I can’t believe how many people it draws,” Cribb said. “My favorite part is seeing all the new faces and getting to know people. I love seeing my regulars having fun, and all the ladies are in such a great mood.”
Crawl Tip!
Make sure to start early and grab a punch card at your first stop. Get your card stamped at each store and be entered into drawings for various prizes. Hours of the crawl are 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
