Lake Norman’s cultural scene continues to flourish The Lake Norman area boasts a growing cultural scene and with the Cain Center for the Arts quickly coming to fruition in Old Town Cornelius, things show no signs of slowing down. So get ready to attend gallery crawls, inspiring plays and mesmorizing concerts, because that’s all here at Lake Norman. If you’re a theatre buff, you’re in luck, as any production by Davidson Community Players is sure to satisfy. For more than 50 years, this award-winning theatre company has entertained audiences in the Lake Norman area. The company offers shows throughout the year, as it has a permanent home at the cozy Armour Street Theatre in Davidson. During the summer, the company performs at the Duke Family Performance Hall at Davidson College. Past favorite productions include 42nd Street, Hello Dolly! and The Music Man. This summer look for Mamma Mia! and A Comedy of Tenors. The Warehouse Performing Arts Center in Cornelius is another theatre venue in the Lake Norman area. Offering cutting-edge productions and concerts in addition to writing workshops and special events, this is

the place for culture vultures. Davidson College also produces top-notch theatrical productions throughout the year. In addition, the college offers the C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series, which brings in performances by visiting musicians, choral groups, dance troupes and theatrical companies. Music at Davidson College includes the Davidson College Concert Series, along with performances by The Davidson College Concert Choir, The Davidson College Chorale, The Davidson College Jazz Ensemble and The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra. Faculty performances also pepper the calendar. The music doesn’t stop there, as several concert series are offered in the area. For more than 11 seasons Music at St. Albans has brought world-renowned musicians to the Lake Norman area performing in musical genres such as Celtic, classical and gospel. Birkdale Village in Huntersville also offers a summer concert series on the weekends. During the warmer months, be sure to pack a picnic basket and head out to the Village Green (corner of Main Street and Concord Road) in Davidson
for Concerts on the Green. From big band to beach music (Band of Oz is always on the schedule), this series appeals to all ages. Art crawls in Cornelius and Davidson throughout the year offer extra fun. The Van Every/Smith Galleries and Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center at Davidson College also offer changing exhibitions, artist receptions and talks throughout the year. However you wish to express your creativity or enjoy the creativity of others, you can bet there’s an outlet for you in the Lake Norman area.

The creation of Lake Norman changed more than the area’s landscape

Lake Norman celebrates 56 years years in 2019. When newcomers discover the lake’s history, they’re almost always surprised to learn how it came about. Then there are some folks who are surprised to find out that it hasn’t always been here. In the early 1900s, James B. Duke, William S. Lee and Dr. W. Gil Wylie envisioned how a series of dams on the Catawba River could literally power the South’s future, in particular the Carolina Piedmont’s future. Cowans Ford Dam was built by Duke Power (now Duke Energy) on a historic Revolutionary War battle site. Ground was broken on the project on September 28, 1959. Four years later the dam was complete with a length of 7,387 feet, which includes more than a mile of earthen dam. The concrete portion alone is 1,279 feet long and 130 feet high. Bill Lee, the grandson of William S. Lee and the chairman of Duke Power Company at the time, led this engineering feat. While the complexity of the project seemed at times staggering, not to mention the emotional impact on the community as two river crossings (Sherrill’s Ford and Beatty’s Ford) would be flooded in addition to many original homesites, Lake Norman was the result of a dream (60 years in the making) come true. Often referred to as “The Inland Sea,” Lake Norman offers 520 miles of shoreline (more than North and South Carolina’s coasts combined) and is named for Norman Atwater Cocke, a retired Duke Power president. with leases starting at $120 a year. Eventually subdivisions were established, and folks began to live on Lake Norman’s shores full time. Though people started realizing how beautiful and satisfying lake living was, heavy development didn’t take off until the 1990s, as the Charlotte area’s thriving business environment brought more people to the area and the infrastrure was in place to support a larger population. While Lake Norman has more than lived up to its powerproducing expectations, it has also transformed what was once a heavily agricultural and textile community into more of a resort area that attracts a variety of people from around the world. On the north end of the lake, you’ll still find many agricultural pockets untouched by development. If you hit it on the right day, you might even discover a cow or two soaking in the water off the shores of Catawba County. The southern part of the lake attracts many people who make their living in nearby Charlotte. When traffic flows, you can travel from your office in Uptown Charlotte to Lake Norman in approximately 45 minutes. Not many urban areas offer a lakeside respite so quickly. As power continues to flow from Lake Norman, so do its memories. Ask around and you’re likely to find someone who was around when the lake filled. They’ll remember the Robert E. Lee, the first tour boat on the lake; the 85-pound catfish that won the state record; Outrigger Harbor, the original marina that stood where The Peninsula Yacht Club is today; and how Hurricane Hugo ravaged Lake Norman’s shores in 1989. More than 50 years after its creation, Lake Norman remains a peaceful respite for an extraordinary community of people. Play it Safe Personal Watercraft Law The N.C. General Assembly enacted a personal watercraft law that took effect Dec. 1, 1999. On June 30th, 2000 this law was amended. Below is a summary of the law:
Who Can Operate a PWC? • Anyone 14 years old but younger than 26 can operate a PWC if: they have successfully completed an approved boating safety education course (proof of age and safety course completion must be carried during operation) they are riding with a person who is at least 18 and is in compliance with the Boating Education Requirement Law (G.S. 75A-16.2) • It is unlawful for the owner of a PWC to knowingly allow a person younger than 16 to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course. • It is unlawful for anyone who has temporary or permanent responsibility for a person younger than 16 to knowingly allow that person to operate a PWC unless they have first completed an approved boating safety education course.
Understand the laws before hitting the water on a personal watercraft
PWC Operation • No one can operate a PWC on state waters between sunset and sunrise. • All PWC riders, passengers and those being towed must wear approved personal flotation devices. • If the PWC is equipped with a lanyard-type engine cut off switch, the lanyard must be worn by the operator at all times. • A PWC must have a rearview mirror or an observer on board besides the operator to legally tow someone on skis or similar device. • PWCs must be operated at all times in a reasonable and prudent manner. Maneuvers that endanger people or property constitute reckless operation. • No person shall operate a personal watercraft on the waters of this State at greater than no-wake speed within 100 feet of an anchored or moored vessel, a dock, pier, swim float, marked swimming area, swimmers, surfers, persons engaged in angling, or any manually operated propelled vessel, unless the personal watercraft is operating in a narrow channel (see below). • No person shall operate a personal
watercraft in a narrow channel (see below) at greater than no-wake speed within 50 feet of an anchored or moored vessel, a dock, pier, swim float, marked swimming area, swimmers, surfers, persons engaged in angling, or any manually operated propelled vessel. • No person shall operate a PWC towing another person on water skis or similar device unless the total number of persons operating, observing, and being towed does not exceed the number of passengers identified by the manufacturer as the maximum safe load for the vessel. Reckless Operation Includes: • Unreasonable or unnecessary weaving through congested boat traffic. • Jumping the wake of a vessel within 100 feet of the vessel or when visibility is obstructed. • Intentionally approaching a vessel in order to swerve at the last moment. • Operating contrary to the “rules of the road”. • Following too closely (see below) to another vessel, including another personal watercraft.
Renting PWCs • No one shall rent a PWC to someone under 16 unless that person meets the conditions in the section “Who Can Operate a PWC?” • A minimum of $300,000 insurance must be carried on each PWC that is rented to the public. Narrow Channel • A “narrow channel” means a segment of the waters of the State 300 feet or less in width. Following too Closely The term “following too closely” means proceeding in the same direction and operating at a speed in excess of 10 miles per hour when approaching within 100 feet to the rear or 50 feet to the side of another vessel that is underway unless that vessel is operating in a narrow channel, in which case a personal watercraft may operate at the speed and flow of other vessel traffic. The Lake Norman area offers many ways to go about your child’s education, and that’s a good thing because every child is different. Award-winning public and private schools provide considerable and diverse choices here, as families can select from schools that emphasize the arts and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), as well as Montessori and faith-based-curriculums. Area high schools offer International Baccalaureate programs, Advanced Placement courses and many other options. With all of these choices, you are sure to find the right fit for your child. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools offers many elementary and middle schools in addition to three high schools in the area — Hopewell and North Mecklenburg in Huntersville and William Amos Hough in Cornelius. North Mecklenburg is noted for its International Baccalaureate program, while Hopewell offers a comprehensive curriculum including the Cambridge International Program. J.M. Alexander Middle School in Huntersville is categorized as an IB World School, and it just moved into a brand new building in 2017. Bailey Middle School In Cornelius opened in 2006 and now has more than 1,500 students. The goal of Bailey Middle is to “Inspire Learners and Empower Leaders.” www.cms.k12.nc.us The Mooresville Graded School District provides another public school option. The district is known nationally for its comprehensive digital plan, as it has distributed more than 4,400 laptop computers to all 2nd- through 12thgrade students and licensed staff across the district. It also provides iPads for use at school for all students in kindergarten and first grade. Dr. Mark Edwards, the former superintendent of Mooresville Graded School District, was named the 2013 AASA (American Association of School Administrators) National Superintendent of the Year. During that same year President Barack Obama visited the school district to see its success firsthand. Education Also serving the Lake Norman area are some of the Iredell-Statesville Schools. Lake Norman High School in Mooresville is a newer high school in the system was ranked the 50th best high school in the state according to U.S. News & World Report. Some area elementary and middle schools also were named Honor Schools of Excellence or Schools of Excellence. In addition, Brady Johnson, superintendent of Iredell-Statesville Schools, received the 2014 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year award. Public charter options
For other public options, families can consider charter schools, for which tax dollars provide some of the funding. These schools are required to have no discrimination, no religious associations and no tuition. If charter schools have more applicants than available slots, they must use open lotteries to fill remaining spots. Community School of Davidson is a public charter school offering grades K-12. The school has less than 1,200 students, and its mission is to use the principles of The Basic School to provide an optimal learning environment. In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked CSD the 22nd best high school in North Carolina. CSD has the highest demand of charter school admission in the state and has a 99 percent graduation rate. www.csdnc.org Corvian Community School in Huntersville is a public charter school serving grades K-9. One grade will be added each year until 2021 when the school will be completed through 12th grade. Private schools offer faith-based and secular choices for families. Because of the continued growth in the Lake Norman area, school offerings change and grow each year as schools open, relocate, and add additional grades and facilities. Cannon School offers a lower, middle and upper school and is located in nearby Concord, making it an easy commute for Lake Norman-area residents. For those interested in pursuing careers in the automotive industry, CPCC — Merancas has courses and degree programs in collision repair technology, diesel and heavy equipment technology, and transportation system technologies. The college also offers Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) for individuals wishing to enter law enforcement in North Carolina. In addition, the full-service campus provides associate of arts degree classes, college preparatory, GED/ESL and college transfer classes. Located on a 665-acre main campus, with a 110-acre lake campus, the college has 1,810 students (51 percent male and 49 percent female) and is the alma mater to more than 20 Rhodes Scholars. Students attending Davidson College benefit from a low student to professor ratio (10:1) to allow for a more collaborative, unique academic experience. More than 850 courses are offered each year. In 2007 Davidson College developed the Davidson Trust, becoming the first liberal arts college in the country to replace loans with grants in all of its financial aid packages. Moreover, the campus is an integral part of the cozy and picturesque college town of Davidson, and more than 90 percent of the students live on campus. Athletes at the school compete in 21 sports at NCAA Division I. The school has an endowment of $796.9 million as of December 31, 2018.

World Wide Wins
The Lake Norman area continues to garner a worldwide reputation for business BY AARON GARCIA

It seems our sleepy lakeside community has built quite the worldwide reputation as a great place to work. Over the past 12 months or so, companies from Germany, Spain and Switzerland have planted flags in the Lake Norman area, injecting more than $110 million in investments between three companies alone. These, along with other newcomers, have continued to bolster and diversify an economic identity that signals great things ahead for Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson. Much of that growth, at least in terms of new, reddirt construction, will be felt in Huntersville’s The Park business complex. Oerlikon, a Swiss tech conglomerate, invested $62 million to build a new 105,000 square-foot facility in the park, which will create 93 new jobs. Ninety employees will eventually fill German stamping and coating giant Kurz’s new 125,000-square-foot, $30 million North American headquarters. Spanish packaging company Daumar also chose the complex as its new North American base of operations and will fill 40 jobs to work out of a 120,000-square-foot facility worth $21 million.

The new additions, along with other foreign companies already calling Lake Norman home, such as Daetwyler (Switzerland), Nutec (Mexico) and Saertex (Germany,) have created an international advanced manufacturing hub in the southern Lake Norman area. Ryan McDaniels, head of Lake Norman Economic Development, explains that such an identity has a way of snowballing and creating even more growth, similar to how companies such as Rubbermaid, Yokohama and MSC moved into the area to be near Davidson-based Ingersoll Rand and Mooresville’s Lowe’s Home Improvement headquarters. “A lot of these companies are able to take advantage of a workforce that may have been attracted to the area because of [a certain company],” explains McDaniel, “but now they have the opportunity to move to a different company and not relocate.” Cornelius has been the target of perhaps the area’s most hotly anticipated expansion in Charlotte’s Olde Mecklenburg Brewery. The long-discussed project will anchor what many believe will be a revitalization of

OERLIKON, A SWISS TECH CONGLOMERATE, INVESTED $62 MILLION TO BUILD A NEW 105,000-SQUARE-FOOT FACILITY IN HUNTERSVILLE’S THE PARK.
Cornelius’ arts district and downtown area, thanks to a $7 million investment that will add 100 new jobs. The town also announced late in 2018 that single-serve cold beverage manufacturer SPRiZZi will run manufacturing out of the 118-000-square-foot building that formerly held Michael Waltrip Racing. As valuable as these acquisitions have been for our area, none of these companies will crack the list of Lake Norman’s biggest employers, which has remained relatively unchanged over the past few years. Ingersoll Rand continues to lead the way with 1,600 employees on its Davidson campus, followed by Davidson College with 750 and MSC (350). McGuire Nuclear Station tops the list for Huntersville at 1,200 employees, followed by Novant Health (690), Metrolina Greenhouses (650), Joe Gibbs Racing (650) and Rubbermaid (400). Initial reports showed

SPRiZZi eventually plans to fill 250 jobs, which would make it Cornelius’ largest employer ahead of Financial Independence Group with 130 workers. McDaniels pointed to the area’s workforce as a main reason the area continues to boom but also understands that value is lost if those workers are lured away. He said projects such as the Northcross Road extension — as well as proposals to revitalize the downtown areas of Huntersville and Cornelius — will go a long way in making sure Lake Norman-area residents are happy when they leave their new offices, too. “That helps us a lot because that allows us to attract more talent, which is so important right now,” says McDaniels. “One of the biggest drivers [of economic development success] is having access to a talented workforce.” A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

BIRKDALE VILLAGE SERVES AS THE NUCLEUS OF HUNTERSVILLE. The days of trekking to Charlotte for Tory Burch purses and Golden Goose sneakers are over. Sure, The Queen City has its retail jewels (think IKEA, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom), but the Lake Norman area also offers plenty of shopping to explore. And the best part is that you don’t have to sweat the traffic to enjoy it. You just have to know where to look. We’ll begin at Exit 18, where you’ll find Northlake Mall, filled with every chain you could want from Macy’s to H & M to Michael Kors to Belk. Surrounding the mall is a selection of big boxes, including one of Mecklenburg County’s two REIs. If you can’t find what you need at this exit, you might want to rethink what you need. Exit 25 brings you to Huntersville, where you’ll find Lowe’s, Target and Kohl’s, along with Birkdale Village, a mixed-use shopping center that serves as the unofficial town square. With a nice mix of fun local shops (Poppies) and chains (think Banana Republic, Gap

and Talbots), Birkdale offers a pleasant shopping experience even for those who don’t enjoy shopping. Stop by on Friday or Saturday evenings during the summer for the Mingling on the Green Concert Series, where you can enjoy a variety of live music at the center fountain. Three miles north at Exit 28 is Cornelius, which is peppered with quaint shops up and down Catawba Avenue. Keep your eyes open for home interior shops (Dutchmans and The Shoppes at Home Heart & Soul) that offer one-of-a-kind home accessories and women’s boutiques such as Avalilly’s, Sweet Magnolia and Luna’s. Davidson, Exit 30, offers a Norman Rockwell take on downtown shopping, complete with Main Street Books, Mine by Sandy (a high-end ladies boutique), Ben & Jerry’s and The Village Store, a legendary gift shop that is more than 50 years old. Be sure to stop by the Davidson College Store on Main Street for all your Davidson College gear. It’s
always a great day to be a Wildcat. Langtree at the Lake (Exit 31) is the newest retail spot in the area. Located at Exit 31, the mixed-use shopping center offers a burgeoning mix of boutiques and restaurants. This area is just getting started, so look for more great things to come. Downtown Mooresville (Exit 33 and 36) also offers an old-fashioned shopping experience with a true hardware store and a variety of shops. West of I-77 in Mooresville, you’ll find any big box store you need, including HomeGoods, Michael’s, Old Navy, Super Target, Staples, Walmart and more. Throughout the Lake Norman area there are plenty of mom and pop shops eager to please with personalized customer service and an inventory of specialized items. During recent years various campaigns have encouraged residents to shop local whenever possible. In recent years, the Lake Norman area has morphed into a hot bed of fabulous restaurants, and new places are constantly opening. Whether you make a reservation or simply seat yourself, you’ll find plenty of eateries that satisfy your cravings. Davidson is a great place to start, as Southern Living ranked the college town 10th on The South’s Best Food Towns List 2019. One of the jewels in Davidson’s crown is Kindred. Owned by Joe and Katy Kindred, the restaurant was named The South’s Best Restaurant in North Carolina by Southern Living in 2018, and it was ranked eighth on Bon Appetit’s list of Best New American Restaurants of 2015. As if that isn’t enough, Kindred was named a James Beard Award Semifinalist in 2016. The Kindreds also own a lakeside eatery called Hello, Sailor that offers a contemporary and sophisticated nod to fish camps. But the Kindreds aren’t the only game in town, as diners in the Lake Norman area can also find the cuisine of many cultures. Menus featuring Mexican, Latin American, Caribbean, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Greek, Irish and Indian food join all manner of American food. The waters of the lake inspire relaxing and fun-filled times, and that mood carries over into many restaurants. More often than not, diners are casually dressed, children’s favorites are offered and prices are affordable. Many places also have outdoor seating, so you can enjoy your meal and the fresh air when the weather is favorable. More and more chefs in the area are building relationships with local farmers and visiting farmers’ markets to secure fresh, in-season ingredients for their menus. Diners can taste the difference. Cheeses for appetizers, greens for salads, seafood and poultry for entrees, vegetables for side dishes, and fruits for cobblers are just a sampling of what can be found. Restaurants like Fork! in Cornelius take pride in not only serving the freshest ingredients available but also in supporting the community. Midwood Smokehouse at Birkdale Village in Huntersville is the latest ‘cue place, and its macaroni and cheese was named the The Best Mac ‘n Cheese in North Carolina by Southern Living. For taste buds yearning for more international flavors, Asian fusion, sushi, Thai and Indian cuisine are well represented. Watch as your meal is prepared on a hibachi grill with great flair at a Japanese restaurant, see how high your spice tolerance is, or simply be adventurous and try a new sushi roll. A day of water-skiing or just cruising the lake can leave one hungry, and fortunately, there are nearly a dozen restaurants just steps away from the shoreline. Ease those hunger pains with menus offering everything from oysters and ribs to modern Mexican and other contemporary fare. Most lakeside establishments are ultra casual with a laidback atmosphere where live music fills the air. There’s no better way to end the day than by grabbing a seat at a table on the deck and enjoying a fantastic sunset with a burger and a cold beverage.

The convenience of Lake Norman’s location is one of the area’s best qualities. Combine its close proxmity to exciting places with its year-round fabulous weather, and it might just be the perfect place to live. For example, you can get to the beach or the mountains in a matter of hours from here. And although no Lake Norman resident is just itching to leave their lakeside haven, everyone can use a change of (even the best) scenery every once in a while. That said, mountain, beach and shopping destinations abound in North and South Carolina. Whether you want a quick jaunt a couple of hours up the Blue Ridge Parkway or a leave-your-cares-behind retreat to one of the many beaches along the Carolina coast, Lake Norman is perfectly positioned as a home base for all manner of Carolina adventures.
Asheville
Drive Time: 2.5 hours Asheville is western North Carolina’s largest city and serves as the business, cultural, shopping and dining hub of the mountains. Asheville is known across the world for being a mountain gem, as it has an arts scene filled with concerts, festivals, art galleries and performances. The city is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge and is known for its natural beauty. The Blue Ridge Parkway, which brushes Asheville, attracts motorists each October when the trees begin to turn. The historic Biltmore Estate, which sits on the city’s outskirts, is a favorite destination for those who love spring flowers and beautiful holiday decor.
Hickory/High Point/ Thomasville
Drive Time — Hickory: 45 minutes Drive Time — High Point and Thomasville: 90 minutes North Carolina has long been considered the furniture capital of the United States, and no three cities are more tied to furniture than Hickory, High Point and Thomasville. Despite recent trends toward moving production overseas, some of the best-known brands in the furniture industry remain headquartered in these three cities. In fact, some of the most extravagant furniture you’ll ever see moves through these areas. A drive through the heart of Hickory on Highway 321 shows just how many outlets still sell locally made goods. High Point hosts a twice-a-year furniture market that attracts thousands of industry buyers from all over the world.

Boone
Drive Time: 2 hours Boone is another North Carolina mountain destination Lake Norman residents can easily reach for a fun day trip or long weekend. Some of the Blue Ridge’s highest peaks are located in the Boone area. It’s another favorite for those interested in viewing the beautiful fall foliage. Many bed and breakfasts beckon visitors year round, and the town is home to Appalachian State University. During the holidays, dozens of Christmas tree farms open for business, so families can pick out the perfect tree and make lifelong memories in the process. Charleston
Drive Time: 3.5 hours Few destinations anywhere are as splendid as Charleston, South Carolina. Make one trip to this charming southern city and you’re sure to be back. Charleston is located on the coast and is considered by many to be the South’s cultural capital. Dining in Charleston is world class, and the city’s dozens of restaurants offer Lowcountry menus that simply can’t be beat. Here you’ll find beautiful gardens wedged between historic pastel homes — many of which were built before the Civil War (which started in nearby Fort
Sumter). Beachgoers are also at home in Charleston, as Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, Seabrook Island and Sullivan’s Island offer a variety of fun for those wanting to hit the sand.
Myrtle Beach
Drive Time: 4 hours Few places are as hot come summer as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (and we’re not just talking about the temperature.) Myrtle Beach boasts miles and miles of beautiful beaches, hotels at every price point, hundreds of shops and nearly 2,000 restaurants. And if you’re a golfer, few places can offer more than the Myrtle Beach area does all year long. More than 14 million people visit Myrtle Beach each year. Families love the carefree summertime atmosphere the beach offers, and with amusement parks, theaters and nightclubs in the mix, there’s truly something for everyone in Myrtle Beach.
Seagrove
Drive Time: Just under 2 hours Seagrove is a tiny town in North Carolina’s Randolph County. But combined with several nearby towns, Seagrove is considered by some to be the pottery capital of the United States. Pottery here dates back to before the Revolutionary War, and it is still celebrated today. The North Carolina Pottery Center is located in Seagrove and offers visitors both permanent and traveling exhibitions, as well as a museum shop and periodic live demonstrations. Nestled among lake towns and Charlotte, Huntersville offers an ideal location. Davidson A Magical Town BY LORI K.TATE If you live in Davidson for any length of time, you’re going to run into someone you know when you’re walking downtown. That’s no accident, as the folks in Davidson have worked hard to create a walkable small town where everyone knows everyone else. While it’s charming to check in with friends while you sip a latte at Summit Coffee, there’s a magical quality that permeates throughout the town. During certain times of the year, the magic comes through even more. For three nights in December, the town turns into a Norman Rockwell painting with its Christmas in Davidson celebration. Horse-drawn carriages decked in

holly gallop through town, while Santa Claus listens to wish lists at the town library. A carousel thrills little ones, as carolers, who look as if they stepped out of a Charles Dickens’ novel, sing God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen in perfect harmony. Davidson United Methodist Church caps off the festivities with a live nativity. In the spring, Town Day brings out a variety of performers to the Village Green, as well as a ropes course built by the local Boy Scouts and performances by Dance Davidson. Throughout the summer, Concerts on the Green brings live concerts to town — Band of Oz is a perrenial favorite. picnic spot for the show. On Saturday mornings, residents flock to the Davidson Farmers’ Market with baskets in hand, looking for the best produce, meats and cheeses. Many treat themselves to a bouquet of flowers to carry them through the week. Live folk and bluegrass music gives the market more of a festival feel, and chef demonstrations inspire everyone to try a little harder in the kitchen. However, if you don’t feel like cooking, Davidson has one of the hottest dining scenes around. With eateries such as Brickhouse Tavern, Carrburritos, Davidson Ice House, Famous Toastery, Flatiron Kitchen + Taphouse, Kindred, Mandolino’s Artisan Pizza, Mestizo and many more, it’s hard to decide what’s for lunch or dinner. And you can bet that as soon as you take a seat, you’ll see someone you know. Of course, one of the best parts of Davidson is Davidson College, the nucleus of town. Established by the Presbyterian Church in 1837, the college brings performances, speakers and international flair to the community, not to mention exciting basketball games. Ever heard of Steph Curry? Walking on its brick sidewalks under the oak trees is one of my favorite things to do. When you see students scurrying to class on foot or via bike, you can’t help but feel hopeful for the future. Whenever I have to run an errand in Davidson, it doesn’t feel like an errand at all. Instead it feels like a little retreat, where tradition and sophstication mesh together to create a vibrant environment of which I’m grateful to be a part.

Living in Charlotte when I was younger, I dreamed about one day living at Lake Norman. I grew up around water and I wanted to make my adult home as close to the water as possible. When I met my husband, I was thrilled to learn that he grew up at Lake Norman and loved the water just as much as I did, so it’s no surprise that we chose to raise our family here. At first my husband worried that I would be homesick for The Queen City, but now he’s the one who has to talk me into making the trek down I-77 to Charlotte for special events (and it has to be really special). Don’t misunderstand

me. Charlotte is a fine city, but the truth is that I have everything I need right here. I grew up in a small town, so it’s important to me to know my neighbors and my community. The size of Cornelius and the friendliness of its people make this an easy task. It’s rare that I don’t run into someone I know at the Fresh Market or at the always fun ‘Tawba Walk Arts & Music Festival. People always want to know how you’re doing and how they can help if you’re not doing well. What makes Cornelius special is how it successfully marries down-home goodness with sophistication. This

is a town where churches and fire departments still hold annual barbecues and where members of the Rotary Club cook pancakes to raise money for noble causes. It’s also a place that offers the type of luxurious amenities that attract the likes of corporate leaders, as well as professional athletes. Not many places can do both well — Cornelius does. Then there’s the variety of things to do here. In Cornelius I can take my children to all sorts of parks and festivals. I can take them on a lakeside picnic at Jetton Park. I can even attend a cutting-edge play at The Warehouse Performing Arts Center (after said picnic sans said children). My 9-year-old twins adore going to Carolina Cones for ice cream. And despite how young they are, they too appreciate how glorious a Lake Norman sunset can be, as they often spot it before I do. Whether you’re on a boat or on the shore, it will take your breath away, and it’s never the same. As for me, I try to paddleboard as often as I can, and when I’m not in the water, you can find me searching for treasures at FlairTRADE Consign, Luna’s or The Shoppes at Home Heart & Soul. All three of these places are locally owned, and you can bet the clerks will remember your name if you visit more than once. I’m happy to raise my children in such a nurturing and vibrant environment, and I’m even happier to call Cornelius my home. Looks like my hunch about living at Lake Norman was right.

The Scenic Route The area’s greenway system offers adventure at its best BY LORI K. TATE
Being outside is part of life in the Lake Norman area. In the northern part of Mecklenburg County, Huntersville, Cornelius and Davidson have their fair share of greenways with more to come. Cornelius’ most recent addition, the Caldwell Station Creek Greenway is a 2.6-mile greenway that connects Bailey Road Park to Highway 21 near Northcross Shopping Center. “It’s [greenways] the number one priority in our comprehensive Parks and Greenways Master Plan,” says Troy Fitzsimmons, director of the Town of Cornelius Parks, Arts, Recreation & Culture (PARC) department. Fitzsimmons says there are many reasons that the popularity of greenways is growing, with one of the biggest being that it’s an unstructured activity. “You can walk, you can run, you can bike,” he says. “With today’s busy lifestyles, it’s hard to go do organized activities; the time may not be right. But with greenways, you can do it in the

morning, afternoon, evening; it doesn’t matter. You don’t need to be with a bunch of people to play a sport.” Another attractive aspect of greenways is their convenience. The Caldwell Station Creek Greenway runs up against the Heritage Green and Oakhurst subdivisions, making access to the trail just a few steps away from residents’ homes. The trail also backs up to Poole Place, a Habitat for Humanity neighborhood. On many of the area’s greenways, you’ll see markers that read Carolina Thread Trail. In fact, 22 miles of the Carolina Thread Trail’s more than 260 completed miles run through the Lake Norman area. The trail runs through 15 counties in North and South Carolina. Catawba Lands Conservancy serves as the lead agency for the trail, while Foundation For The Carolinas is its philanthropic partner. miles long, making it possible to paddle part of the trail. Throughout the trail, you’ll find various attractions, both historical and commercial. As greenways continue to grow in popularity, municipalities are working to make more of them a reality. In fall 2016 the Richardson Greenway, part of the Carolina Thread Trail, opened in Troutman. The Troutman Depot, home to the local farmers’ market during the summer, is located on this rail-totrail conversion. In Huntersville, a tunnel that will run under I-77 connecting downtown Huntersville with Rosedale Park is almost complete. A proposed Lower McDowell Creek Greenway west of the Wynfield subdivision is in the development stages and will connect the Upper McDowell Creek Greenway, which runs along Birkdale in Huntersville to create seven miles of trail. On a larger scale, the proposed Mooresville-Charlotte Trail, will offer a 30-mile bicycle and pedestrian corridor running north/ south along Highway 115. In Cornelius, construction on the South Prong Rocky River

Greenway is underway, and in 2020, construction will begin on the JV Washam to Smithville Park Greenway. The town is also partnering with the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department to construct a halfmile South Bailey Road Greenway in 2019. This trail will link the Caldwell Station Creek Greenway via the existing Bailey Road Multi-Use Path to the South Prong Rocky River Greenway trail, creating almost nine miles of trail connecting the Northcross shopping center area to Antiquity. Perhaps the jewel in the mix is the Emerald Necklace concept that will create 12 miles of greenway or multi-use paths around Cornelius. “It would tie in businesses with recreation areas, [offer] civic areas for people to congregate, just really tie in the town,” explains Fitzsimmons, adding that the idea was partly inspired by the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 19.9-mile multiuse rail trail in Greenville, South Carolina. In the meantime, residents can enjoy the greenways that are in place, as they take a therapeutic time out in nature. Great Lake Living at Lake Norman

There’s a Place for You Lake Norman’s faith community offers all kinds of experiences BY JODY SEYMOUR
Varieties of a Religious Experience is the title of a book by William James. It was published in the early part of the last century, but I am borrowing it to portray the many religious expressions that are present in the Lake Norman area. If one decides to take seriously the journey of the Spirit, then there is a buffet of experiences from which to choose. Although studies show a decline nationally in those who connect to a religious community, we still live in a region that is known as “The Bible Belt.” Perhaps that “belt” is not tight as in years past, but its presence is still felt. In James’ book about religious experience, he points to the variety of human needs that seek out religion as a way to add meaning to those needs. If a visitor from another planet showed up and said, “Take me to the place where your God is worshiped,” where would you take the visitor? Those who believe there is “one” God must acknowledge that we sure find a variety of ways to worship that one God. We can consider such variety a liability or we can celebrate that different is beautiful. It is said that our culture is becoming more and more secular. But if it is true that we are not humans seeking what

it means to be spiritual but rather spiritual beings seeking what it means to be human, then there will always be a place for communities of faith. From the small, white-framed church in a rural community to the large, high energy church that might meet in a remodeled movie theatre, you can find many varieties of religious expression in the Lake Norman area. In our expanding cultural diversity, you can also hear the call to prayer in a mosque or the meditative chants from those who call themselves Buddhist. The title of one of the books I wrote is based on an old “good news/bad news joke.” The pilot of an airplane announces over the speaker, “Ladies and gentleman, I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that we are lost, and I have no idea where we are. The good news is that we are making excellent time.” The book title is Lost but Making Excellent Time: Transforming the Rat Race into a Pilgrimage. There is no doubt that things are getting faster all around us. From cars to technology, the pace is quicker and at times more hectic. In the midst of the fast pace it is easy to “get lost.” The human spirit needs times of reflection and times for meaning
making. We all know that we are here, but the deeper question is, “Why are we here?” Faith communities give us a chance to ponder this question. One of my favorite quotes comes from Mark Nepo in The Exquisite Risk. “To journey without being changed is to be a nomad. To change without journeying is to be a chameleon. To journey and be transformed by the journey is to be a pilgrim.” So I invite you to not get lost while making excellent time. There are many faith communities nearby that can help us become spiritual pilgrims who pay attention to the gift of life and also help us give back to our community. So as a song I learned a long time ago states, “Different is beautiful, God bless variety. She believes that the revitalization of the downtown area of Cornelius (with its breweries, pubs, arts festivals and plans for the Cain Center for the Arts) is a smart move and one that homebuyers in the area will appreciate. Walker says she is happy to be able to show clients more communities for residents 55 and older, as those are things you didn’t see a lot of 10 years ago. “Now we have great choices,” she says. “There is wealth in this area, and the residents don’t want to downsize into just anything. The lake gives you a different quality of life.” Walker says one neighborhood she recommends for 55+ is Trilogy in Denver. It offers single-family detached homes up to 3,300 square feet. It features the Twin Mills Club, which operates as a private club for every member of the Trilogy community, with indoor and outdoor pools, kayaks, bikes, other outdoor gear and more. There’s also a boat club that members can access in close proximity to the community. In Huntersville, those looking to retire can choose from places like The Courtyards at Kinnamon Park and The Courtyards of Huntersville, both located right down the street from Birkdale Village. JETTON PARK IN CORNELIUS OFFERS LAKESIDE ADVENTURES.
Of course, having fun on the lake is a huge focus here, but, believe it or not, the water is only one of the many recreational activities residents enjoy at Lake Norman. Here’s a look at what adventures await you, rain or shine, cold or warm weather. If you want to spend time outdoors, Lake Norman is fortunate to have a great public park system, countless trails and greenways for biking and hiking, and parks with plenty of recreational fields and playground equipment. In Cornelius, Ramsey Creek Park is a 43-acre waterfront park with boat-launching areas, docks, a fishing pier and a public swimming beach. There are also picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court, a three-acre dog park, a playground and nature trails. Visitors can rent large “funbrellas” to utilize on the large and waterfront picnic area. Another popular destination for those who love to spend time outdoors is Jetton Park in Cornelius. This 104-acre park has a beach area, wooden gazebos, a formal garden and a playground. There are also eight tennis courts, and paved walking and biking trails, most of which wind

through nicely shaded wooded areas. For a small fee, visitors can rent waterside picnic decks equipped with a grill and a table. In Troutman, there’s Lake Norman State Park, an ideal place to enjoy the area’s natural beauty and go running or mountain biking. The 1,328-acre park includes 13 miles of shoreline along the northeastern shore of Lake Norman. There is a 125-yard beach and public swimming area, which is supervised by lifeguards seasonally, as well as a concession stand, showers, restrooms and changing stalls. In Davidson, walkers and cyclists enjoy the natural beauty of Fisher Farm Park, located on 200 acres of woods off Shearer Road. It features four miles of biking trails with enough terrain for different skill levels. There’s also a 2.5mile walking trail on site. Dogs love it here. In Huntersville, visit the Latta Plantation Center and Nature Preserve, situated on more than 1,000 acres on Mountain Island Lake. There, you’ll find hiking trails and the Carolina Raptor Center, where visitors can observe more than 25 species of raptors living along a Raptor Trail with a A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

self-guided tour. Also in Huntersville, Blythe Landing offers 26 acres of fun with floating piers and boat ramps, a beach and playground, picnic areas, and sand volleyball courts. Blythe Landing is also home to Lake Norman Community Sailing, which offers a variety of sailing programs for all ages. In addition to Lake Norman’s 520 miles of shoreline, there are also stateof-the-art fitness centers that offer amenities for every member of the family, as well as swimming, canoeing and kayaking lessons, all of which provide plenty of things to do during the colder winter months. One great place for families to get fit is Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics. The 88,000-square-foot facility is home to a 25-yard warm water pool and outdoor family fun pool. It also holds the distinction of being the only public facility in the Southeast with an Olympicsized, 50-meter competition pool and 10-meter dive tower. It is often
host to aquatic events with up to 2,000 spectators for regional, national, world-class swim and dive competitions. In addition, there’s a full-court gymnasium and a complete fitness center with cardiovascular training equipment, such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, and stationary bicycles and group exercise classes. The Lake Norman YMCA in Cornelius is equally as popular, as you can learn to sail, water ski, canoe, paddle board or kayak at this branch. In addition, you can enjoy a beachfront picnic after a rousing game of outdoor volleyball. As for indoor activities, enjoy Pilates and yoga in the branch’s waterview studio, dedicated to mind and body programs. Group exercise classes abound at all levels, as well as summer day camps. Indoor/outdoor pools, along with an excellent fitness staff, round out the branch’s offerings. Whatever you feel like doing recreationally, you can bet there’s a park or facility that offers it here. In addition to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, many high-profile NASCAR teams are headquartered in stateof-the-art production shops located in Huntersville and Mooresville, while others aren’t far away. Scores of drivers live on the shores of Lake Norman, and it’s not uncommon to see them boating on the water or out at local restaurants and shops when they aren’t chasing the checkered flag. Thousands of crew members, NASCAR support personnel and supporting business owners live and play around Lake Norman, too. When it comes time to race, Lake Norman residents can make a 45-minute drive to Charlotte Motor Speedway to

Charlotte Hornets
www.nba.com/hornets Charlotte’s history with professional sports dates back to the 1980s when the city’s first-ever major pro sports team — the Hornets — began competing in an arena just off Tyvola Boulevard. When the team left for New Orleans in 2002, it took the name. However, in the fall of 2014, the Charlotte Bobcats rebranded themselves as the Charlotte Hornets, and fans couldn’t be happier about it. North Carolina native and former NBA superstar Michael Jordan is the majority owner of the team, and the recent changes he made not only in the front office but also on the floor have the team playing competitive ball once again. Home games are played at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

The Charlotte Checkers are the region’s minor league hockey team and serve as the American Hockey League affiliate for the Raleigh-based Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL. While the Hurricanes are relatively new to the state, the Checkers name has been associated with Charlotte hockey teams since the 1950s. Today’s team plays its home games from October to April at Spectrum Center Charlotte where the action is more fast and furious than ever before.

Kannapolis Intimidators
www.intimidatorsbaseball.com The minor league baseball team in nearby Kannapolis features one of the most unique names in all of baseball. The Intimidators are the Class Low-A Affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, and they are named after legendary NASCAR racer — and Kannapolis native — Dale Earnhardt. The team plays in the South Atlantic League and features players just beginning their journey to the major leagues. Home games at the 4,700-seat Intimidators Stadium are about as intimate as a fan could ask for. So bring your glove, and keep your eyes peeled for foul balls and home runs or just sit back and watch the fireworks that often light up the games. The Intimidators play from April through early September.
Davidson College Wildcats
www.davidsonwildcats.com In 2014, Davidson College joined the Atlantic 10 Conference and quickly proved that it has what it takes to compete with the big dogs, as the men’s basketball team won the regular season championship and played in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Charlotte native and NBA standout, Steph Curry, took the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in 2008. In 2016, Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, was
voted the NBA’s first unanimous MVP. Head Coach Bob McKillop continues to lead the men’s basketball program, which made it back to the NCAA Tournament in 2018, and the team plays its home games on campus at Belk Arena. Scott Abell, who formerly coached at Washington & Lee University, began coaching the football team in 2018. In addition, a handful of women’s teams from basketball and field hockey to tennis and lacrosse dominate the athletic scene at Davidson. Altogether, Davidson fields more than 20 men and women’s athletic teams. Nearly one in four Davidson students participates in varsity sports.
UNC Charlotte 49ers

The school signed its first-ever recruiting class in early 2012 and built a state-of-the-art stadium on its campus in northeast Charlotte. The team kicked off its first official season on August 31, 2013 with a 52-7 victory over Campbell University. Basketball is also widely followed on campus. The 9,000-seat Halton Arena is located inside the Barnhardt Student Activity Center and is the home to the Charlotte 49ers men’s and women’s teams, which compete in Conference USA. Time to Tee Off Golf at Lake Norman is challenging and rewarding
The Lake Norman area isn’t the easiest place to play golf, but it’s always rewarding. Combining aspects of sandhill golf from the Pinehurst and coastal Carolina areas with hilly and rolling terrain from the western Carolina mountain courses, there is never a shortage of club selection decisions to be made, and they all offer their own adventures. Standing on the elevated tee box of Cowan’s Ford Country Club’s par 5 15th hole, golfers are afforded not simply a breathtaking view of one of the course’s signature holes, they are also challenged with making the decision either to go for the green in two or lay up short of the babbling brook and stone wall then chip and putt

for birdie. Perhaps it is the lure of the tee box which rises 75 feet above the fairway that dictates club selection, or perhaps it is simply the fact that the hole’s layout has been the subject of horror stories for decades that makes golfers play it conservatively, but the 15th is a true test of the risk/ reward mentality that can be found on any of the area’s top courses. In addition to Cowan’s Ford, a walkable (35-40 percent of golfers regularly walk their rounds at any time) 6,932-yard course that is more than 50 years old, several other private courses are also keeping pace, as they afford golfers the luxury of living and playing in the same neighborhood. MOORESVILLE GOLF CLUB RECENTLY WENT THROUGH AN EXTENSIVE RENOVATION. Club in Huntersville and River Run Country Club in Davidson combine golfing excellence with strong neighborhood identity. The Peninsula Club joins Trump National in nearby Iredell County with unmatched water views, while River Run and NorthStone boast the classic North Carolina look of rolling terrain and treelined fairways. Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville combines the look and feel of a private course with the affordability and appeal of a public facility. During the first week of May, the Wells Fargo Championship brings the PGA TOUR to Charlotte as top pros compete at the Quail Hollow Club. So grab your driver, tee it up high, then swing away. Golf at Lake Norman is full of surprises and challenges if you can just get past the views.

Upon joining the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce, or if you’ve recently expanded/renovated, one of the first opportunities you’ll have to get to know your fellow members and introduce them to your business is to have a ribbon cutting or mixer. If you would prefer to have a simple ribbon cutting ceremony, you’ll have the opportunity to borrow the Chamber’s oversized scissors for the event. You may also extend your ribbon cutting event by having a mixer. The Chamber will also help you publicize your ribbon cutting, announcing to our membership via our website event calendar and newsletter. Ambassadors and other Chamber staff will be onsite for the occasion. Mixers are less formal, generally with food and drink, and can be scheduled at any time with a minimum of 10 days notice.
