hese days my mornings begin with belly rubs. I can’t walk to my closet without being blocked by two tabby cats sprawled on their backs, insisting that I stroke their tummies. I gladly oblige over and over again until they okay my passage. It’s a sweet price of admission. Brothers Hamilton and Jefferson, fondly known as our furry founding fathers, came into our lives last August. My friend, Natasha, and her daughters, Madison and Ellie, foster kittens for Lake Norman Humane, formerly the Humane Society of Iredell, during the summer. One day Natasha posted on Facebook that she had three socialized kittens ready for adoption. I had no idea what a socialized cat was, but it had been six months since we’d lost our cat Azalea, and I knew it was time to bring a new feline into our lives. I messaged Natasha. Days later my twins, The Tater Tots, and I found ourselves sitting on Natasha’s playroom floor frolicking with three of the cutest kittens you’ve ever seen. When I walked in the door, Jefferson immediately brushed my leg, as he intuitively knew how to work the situation. Hamilton went for the kid angle and proceeded to delight my children more than any toy ever could. While their brother, Aaron Burr, was super sweet, we went there with the intention of adopting one cat. In minutes, I knew we were going home with

two, but I also knew we couldn’t swing three animals. Luckily, someone else adopted Aaron shortly after. As soon as we brought Hamilton and Jefferson home, we knew that they were the right fit for us. They’re playful cats. Even though they can’t talk, it’s apparent that they have a sense of humor, which is a must in our household. Hamilton loves to kick small objects around the house with the dexterity of David Beckham, while Jefferson prefers to stalk the fish tank for hours on end. Neither one has ever met a nap they didn’t like, and at night when we’re winding down, they jump in bed with us and snuggle. As soon as the light goes off, they hop out of bed and do whatever cats enjoy doing during the night. It’s almost as if they’re tucking us in. The next morning, there they are on the floor just waiting for their belly rubs. As for guests, these two love to entertain. Instead of hiding
under the sofa or scarily hissing at visitors, they simply join the party. They’ll even curl up on a guest’s lap. Oftentimes when we have extended family dinners, people vote to have the soiree at our house just so the cats can attend. When we see relatives who live out of town, they always ask about Hamilton and Jefferson, as they’re just as much a part of our family as anyone else. That’s the magic of pets. They bring a perspective into the conversation that humans can’t provide. They follow you around to let you know that they’re happy to be with you. When you're sad, they know that just being there is enough. During the time between Azalea’s passing and the arrival of Hamilton and Jefferson, something was missing in our home. There was a stillness that even two loud first graders couldn’t fill. We needed that extra piece of whimsy that only pets can give. That’s what we got when we adopted the founding fathers. Today our house is livelier than ever. There’s a constant level of chaos that entertains and soothes us all at once. Whether the cats are wrestling, cuddling with The Tots or secretly jumping on the countertops, we’re so grateful that they are with us. And we’re more than happy to supply their morning belly rubs.

t all started with the American Girl Doll magazine. Then 9-year-old Emma Metzger read about an agility training camp for dogs. Emma, now 17, took her puppy, Molly, to the weeklong overnight camp that summer. She learned about running obstacles, grooming dogs, search and find games, and tracking. After camp, she found trainer Deb Knowles at Dog Haven in Concord and took weekly classes. “She’d [Knowles] set up the course like you would see in competition,” says Metzger. The daughter of Bob and Becky Metzger of Mooresville, Emma also set up agility equipment in her yard for homework between classes. Emma, who recently graduated from Community School of Davidson, began traveling to dog competitions in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia on weekends to compete in dog agility competitions. She also had a new canine sidekick for competitions — Will, a border collie. Will brought new challenges. “It was a big learning curve for me. Different dogs handle in different ways, kind of like cars,” explains Emma. Eventually she and Will won the prestigious title of Master Agility Champion (MACH). “To win first place in a competition full of grownups was pretty cool,” recalls Emma. It took seven years of practice for Will to run the obstacles perfectly. “I had to learn so often about patience and that it was going to take time to do things perfectly,” she says. — Holly Becker, photography by Brant Waldeck

oing to work each day is doggone fun for Bob Busby. As the owner of DiDió K-9 Country Klub, Busby has been catering to the needs of Lake Norman pets for 30 years. He started small, first opening as a grooming business in Mooresville’s Dyson Square in 1987. Customers began asking Busby about boarding services in the area, and he decided to expand services. At the time, boarding was mostly limited to veterinary offices. “The [Lake Norman] area was growing, and there was a need for more boarding,” he remembers. In 1989, Busby bought eight acres in Mooresville to build a state-of-the-art boarding facility. The first phase opened in 1991. Today, the DiDió
K-9 Country Klub features 100 private, indoor boarding suites. Each suite is equipped with a door so dogs can move between the indoor suite and a covered patio for outdoor play. The suites have airconditioning and heating, and Casablanca fans are spaced throughout the facility for a constant flow of fresh air. His wife, Susan, is a master groomer, and she’s been making dogs look fabulous since 1987. “People come from as far away as Gastonia to get a ‘Susan-do,’ ” says Busby. In addition to dogs and cats, DiDió K-9 Country Klub has found a niche in boarding exotic animals, such as birds, reptiles and ferrets. Exotic pets usually come in their own habitats for boarding. Busby’s own exotic pet, Piggy, a Yellow-Naped Amazon, is the

entertainer in the reception area. The 28-year-old parrot sings and calls dogs. Busby continues to look for new ways to improve his business. This year he contracted with a veterinarian to offer an on-site wellness clinic providing examinations and vaccinations. Often customers came to DiDió K-9 Country Klub only to realize a pet was missing a vaccination required for boarding. Customers had to make an appointment with a veterinarian and then come back to the kennel for boarding. “The wellness clinic provides a service for the convenience of our customers,” says Busby. “They drop the dog off, and we contact our vet and she swings by to give the vaccination.” A former American Kennel
Club dog handler and judge, Busby says running DiDió K-9 Country Klub is enjoyable because his customers genuinely love their pets. “We don’t take care of dogs or pets here. We take care of family members,” says Busby. “We spoil them while they are here.” Customer loyalty is just one perk to longevity in the business. “We have people with dogs that are now 13 to 14 years old, and some dogs have been coming since they were puppies,” says Busby. “Some have been customers for 20 years.”

We recently spoke with his owners, Mooresville resident Joel Sprinkle and his fiancé Flame Deal, to find out more about the Australian Shepherd that stole our hearts at this year’s competition. How long have you had CRASH? We have had CRASH since he was 6 weeks old. Did you name him CRASH? If so, how did you come up with the name? Yes, we named him CRASH. One of my favorite movies is Bull Durham. Kevin Costner’s character in Bull Durham is Crash Davis. How old is CRASH? He is 3 years and 2 months old.
What is his favorite thing to do? He loves to play and run with other dogs. He herds them. He will try to herd anything that runs, including people. His other favorite thing to do is go for boat rides on the pontoon (The Crash Pad) and explore different islands and shoals. What is his favorite thing to eat? Treats, he is very food driven. He will do anything for a treat Can he do any special tricks? We hear he likes to
paddleboard. He is very smart. If a treat is involved, he will figure out whatever kind of trick anyone wants to teach him. Do you have any other pets and if so, do they get along well with CRASH? No, we don’t have any other pets. CRASH is like our little boy. He goes everywhere with us. Anything else you’d like to add? He is just a very happy dog. We give him a lot of love, and he returns it tenfold.

ennifer Brulé is busy. There’s the new cookbook draft due in a week. Then she’s training employees at the Barcelona Burger Bar in Mooresville, Michael Bay’s newest restaurant for which she developed the recipes, and there’s her weekly Sunday morning television appearance for NBC Charlotte. But even in that whirlwind of commitments, the classically trained chef and cookbook author can’t help but feel profoundly grateful. “When you have a child, your life as you know it stops, and it becomes your child’s life. Everything that you do is for that child. With four girls, that was 15 years. There was this
creative, curious person within my soul and that need was not being satiated, and I couldn’t share what I believe my gift is,” explains 49-year-old Brulé, the mother of four daughters who range in age from 12 to 19. Seven years ago, her family moved to Davidson from England, and her youngest children started kindergarten. It was the perfect time to pursue her passion professionally. At first, Brulé catered. Soon, she was doing segments on Charlotte Today and teaching cooking classes. Rather than crafting some grand plan, she just followed where each opportunity took her. “People say to live in the moment, and I am hardwired
that way. I have never set a goal in my life. I don’t look forward or backward; I am always in the moment — to a fault,” she says. And, yet, there was one moment that profoundly crystallized what Brulé’s efforts over time had meant. “The biggest milestone for me personally and professionally was getting my first cookbook contract. To get a cookbook contract, you have to have a big name or a strong brand, and that was frustrating to me. When they sent me the contract to sign, my girls were all standing around me, and I opened the contract and fell to my knees crying. It was so poignant, and I wanted to tell my girls, ‘Do not quit. If you are

Getting people to eat good food is the very bottom line, and I feel very grateful that I am able to do this.” To be creative, Brulé prefers a simple kitchen. She shuns the open kitchen designs that are so popular in homes today. Though she has a couch in her kitchen so that her children can be nearby, she prefers not to talk while she’s creating. When she is seeking inspiration, she visits a grocery store and walks the aisles in search of a unique ingredient. Back in her kitchen, she plays with it, making food her medium. “Creativity is the beauty of life. It’s the color. It’s the texture. It’s what makes everything special. You can go somewhere that has no creativity, and you can feel it,” she says. “I want someone’s heart and soul. When I am having an experience, I want it to be meaningful.”

That devotion to her passion and purpose, even when life required a change of focus for a while, has made her success and the increasing creative professional opportunities coming her way even sweeter. “Food is an obsession for me like paint is for a painter. I go to sleep thinking about what I am going to cook the next day and wake up thinking about what I am going to cook,” says Brulé, who has only ever prepared a handful of things the same way more than once for her family over the last 25 years. When Fitness magazine asked her to develop five savory recipes with chocolate in them, she brainstormed, researched and then got in the kitchen. One product of her creativity? A Bolognese sauce with chocolate. “I feel so lucky to do what fills

atching our dog, Stella, explode with energy and race toward the boat when she learns the family and I are about to spend an afternoon underway is a thing of beauty. Bounding first across the lawn as if unencumbered by gravity, she moves with a sense of purpose mixed with unbridled joy. As she transitions to the dock in full stride, her floppy ears and wildly dangling tongue shapeshift to form an aerodynamic arrow pointed squarely at the gangway. Her movements, if captured on video then played in slomo, would make the perfect “Running Dog” montage for any canine commercial. As she nears the boat everything changes. Perhaps she becomes paralyzed by the sudden realization that she is about to leave solid ground or maybe she spots the gap

between the dock and boat and decides the fear of failing to make the jump, however small, isn’t worth the risk. Who knows, but for whatever reason, she comes to a complete stop just

Marley inches away from the target. And she won’t budge. If we try to drag her by the collar or lift her medium-size dog frame, she morphs into a four-legged, panting and whimpering version of Jabba the Hutt. She is an amorphous blob that no man, woman, child or rebel princess can coax, carry or otherwise cajole onboard. Stella, I have frustratingly come to realize, is not the perfect boat dog. To learn what makes the perfect boat dog, I did what any good writer/researcher might do, I asked my editor to put the call out to boat owners who take their dogs with them, and then I struck up conversations.

Fred
Marley is a 60-pound golden doodle that belongs
to Davidson’s Phipps family. When Jessica, Andy and their two children became boat owners during the summer of 2016, Marley took to the water literally and figuratively like a happy member of the family, albeit a big furry one who gets everyone on the boat wet when she shakes. “Marley is a double retriever, the poodle mixed with the retriever, so she is a double water dog who has it in her wiring to be with us on the water,” Jessica explains. “She is obsessed with family, and even though she’s not the greatest swimmer, she won’t miss an opportunity to spend the day with us on the boat.” And if she is left behind, perhaps to clear space for an extra kid or kids, Jessica says Marley isn’t the happiest of

Yogi Denver’s Tom Proctor has spent decades on the lake, never without whom he calls his “First Mate.” In the beginning there was Spanky, a lab retriever mix, then, after a difficult waiting period that ended this spring, Yogi, a similar mixed breed. “I was a bit nervous at first introducing Yogi [to the water], but he took to it better than I could have imagined,” explains Proctor, a Ford Motor Company regional trainer. “When I come home from a week on the road all I want to do is go on the lake, and Yogi is right there with me. Sunrises, sunsets, whole days, I’d say he loves the boat, the lake and the water as
Yogi much, if not more, than I do.” So, Stella, with boating season here in force, and countless numbers of boat dogs in all shapes, sizes and breeds in the pack, what do you say we give the boat one more shot? It will be a blast.

When Julie Baker, a Cornelius Realtor, told me about how she takes her basset hound, Fred, out with her to spend afternoons relaxing on the water, I dismissed my theory that perhaps it is Stella’s breed keeping her from making the leap from the dock to the boat. “Dogs love the lake, and they love boating, especially Fred, who is an outdoor dog who hates staying in the house,” Baker tells me. “You see retrievers and labs on the water, then there’s Fred. Put Fred on a raft with a life jacket, and he’s fantastic.”
If a basset hound can love boating, I tell Stella, so should she. Stella isn’t buying my reasoning; she’d rather bark at airplanes, chase birds and squirrels, and try to bite waves.

LakeCross Veterinary’s state-of-the-art treatment targets feline hyperthyroid disease t’s a condition that affects one in 10 geriatric cats. Feline hyperthyroidism results from increased blood concentrations of thyroid hormone (T4) produced by tumors of the thyroid gland (goiters). This leads to heart, liver and kidney failure if left untreated. Signs that owners may recognize would be rapid heart rates, excessive thirst and hunger, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss. While there are several treatment options for this disease, they can be costly and may or may not fully resolve the disease. One innovative form of treatment exists in
the Lake Norman area at the T4Paw Feline Hyperthyroid Treatment Center, which has treated more than 2,000 cats to date, some traveling from out of state with their owners.
Creating a clinic
Opening the facility was not a quick and easy task. Dr. Tom Hemstreet, a veterinarian and co-founder of LakeCross Veterinary in Huntersville, has always had a special interest in feline hyperthyroid disease and wanted to be able to offer a special radioactive iodine therapy for it when they first opened the practice in 1998. There are no training programs specific for feline
thyroid disease. Hemstreet took a nuclear medicine sabbatical and worked with the faculty of the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine to create a program that would satisfy the requirements necessary for a radioactive materials license from the State of North Carolina Division of Radiation Protection. It took three years to obtain the necessary building code variances and construct the 400-square-foot facility on the LakeCross Veterinary campus that would eventually become T4 Paws.

Hemstreet points out that putting an aging cat with an already increased heart rate under anesthesia for surgery can be risky. T4 Paws delivers one shot with a very small dose of radioactive iodine, which permanently decreases the high thyroid hormone levels in 98 percent of treated cats without affecting any other cells of the body. The staff has always been very helpful and knowledgeable and has quickly addressed any questions I’ve had. “It’s been a rewarding part of our practice,” says Hemstreet, who with his staff has worked to help similar clinics in North and South Carolina complete training for their own licenses. So far, T4Paws has treated patients from 200 to 300 referring veterinarians and is now the only center providing this treatment in the greater Charlotte area. In addition, the American Association of Feline Practitioners recently endorsed LakeCross as a gold-certified Cat Friendly Practice. When her cat, Boo, was recently diagnosed with feline hyperthyroidism, she knew what her preferred method of treatment was. “Having had Polka Dots treated, there was no question in my mind about having her sister treated by Dr. Hemstreet instead of starting her on oral medications,” says Whitaker. “I much preferred to ‘fix’ my cats’ disease verses only treating
it. The great care Polka Dots received at T4 Paws also made the decision to have Boo treated easier.” The approximate cost of this treatment is a little over $1,300. While the surgery option is usually less, starting at $800, surgical treatment may not be successful, Hemstreet notes. Dietary management with low iodine food for cats is around $60 for 24 cans of food. Medical management requires twice daily dosing, which can be difficult if a cat is not cooperative. Medical management also requires routine blood tests. While there are other treatment options, radioactive iodine is considered the gold standard of therapy for feline thyroid disease and 98 percent of patients who receive treatment at T4 Paws recover successfully after just one treatment. “T4 Paws is a very welcoming clinic,” says Whitaker. “When I

The Dance of the South

Stephen Balok and Nikki Contoulas share their love of shag dancing to keep it alive
Stephen Balok and Nikki Contoulas float across the dance floor as they shag.
Along with sweet tea, homegrown tomatoes and blessed hearts, shag is a staple of southern culture. Charlotte from North Myrtle Beach a little over a year ago, shagging has been part of her life since she was a little girl. “My mom was doing it [the shag] in the ’50s and ’60s when it was popular the first time around, even before shag even got its name,” explains Contoulas. “It was called fast dancing then.” At first Contoulas wasn’t into it, deeming it only for old people. But when she was around 12, her mother took her to a junior shag contest, and everything changed. “I thought, ‘Maybe this is kind of cool,’ ” recalls Contoulas, who won
second place at the USA Grand Nationals in Atlanta in May. “Ever since then the bug bit me.” Balok discovered the dance when a friend at his church, Mt. Zion United Methodist in Cornelius, started teaching a class. “A bunch of my friends, including my wife [Carey], decided to take the class just for some fun, and I picked it up really quickly,” remembers Balok. “I’ve been doing it for nine years now. My wife doesn’t compete with me. She can dance, but she just didn’t take it quite as far as I did.” Far indeed, as Balok and Contoulas are both professional shaggers, meaning they’ve won enough competitions to move to the most advanced level. Though they both have different dance partners when they compete, they enjoy teaching together. Lucky for folks in the Lake Norman area, the dancing duo offers shag workshops at Dynamic
Ballroom in Huntersville. When Dynamic Ballroom moves to Cornelius later this summer, it will offer regular classes by Balok and Contoulas. “Our workshops have done really well,” says Balok. “We know that there’s a lot of interest in it.” Contoulas loves teaching the dance she grew up with because she wants younger generations to take an interest in it. In fact, she recently gave Rachel Lindsay of The Bachelorette a shag lesson in Bluffton, South Carolina. “This [shagging] is something we pass on from generation to generation,” says Contoulas. “You get the best of all worlds between the people and the music. You fall in love with the music, and you meet the most amazing people.”

tephen Balok didn’t learn to shag until he was 28 years old. But as you watch the Huntersville native float across the dance floor with former national champion Nikki Contoulas, it’s obvious that he picked it up quickly. For the uninitiated, the shag is a dance that began in the late 1940s on the Carolina coast. In the basic shag step, ladies start with their right foot, and men start with their left foot. Although you count to six, there are actually eight beats that correspond to eight movements. You move to the front, middle, back, and return to the middle. The counting goes as follows, one-and two, three-and-four, five-six. No matter what, you never move the same foot twice in a row. Along with sweet tea, homegrown tomatoes and blessed hearts, shag is a staple of southern culture. For Contoulas, who moved to south

S
o let’s set the scene. With just 7.2 seconds left in the game that would decide which team advances to fill the last spot of the 2017 NCAA Final Four, Kentucky has just made a three-point shot to tie the score at 73. The Tar Heels, always a team to capitalize on transitional chaos, grab the ball from the net, inbound almost immediately, cross the mid-court line with the clock ticking down — five, four, three — penetrate the key then dish the ball out to the wing where sophomore Luke Maye, who has had the hot hand all night, is open. With 2.3 seconds left, Maye squares to the basket and releases the ball.

“Maye for the win,” the commentator says as the crowd, player benches, cheerleaders, both mascots and almost everyone watching in America, rise to their feet. The ball gently rotates backward as it floats toward the rim. Maye keeps his shooting arm extended as if to add an exclamation point to what is about to happen. He feels it. Luke Maye knows before anyone. There is never a doubt. With just .3 seconds left, the ball swishes through the hoop. Carolina beats Kentucky. Tar Heel Nation goes nuts, and Maye adds his name to a very short list of those whose last-second heroics have determined the outcome of one of the season’s most important games. It is March Madness at its best. (Duke fans are enraged.)

time ACC All-Honors student athlete says. “I make sure everything I do has a purpose. With basketball, I try to shoot as much as I can, before practice and after practice, and I put myself in situations where I’m the most uncomfortable so I can try to improve. And when it comes to the classroom, I
just try to make sure everything gets done with 100 percent effort every single day.” And as the oldest of four boys, Maye also tries to be the standard bearer. “My mom always told me the big brother always has to look out for the younger brothers and make sure they stay on
track, and I have always tried to do the best I can to be there for them whenever I can,” he says. “Growing up I learned that your three best friends are the three guys in this room, my brothers [Cole, Beau and Drake], and they will always be there supporting you no matter what happens, so I know they

grew up in Huntersville, says academics are a priority. “School has always been a big part of my life, so of course I’d be there,” Maye says, reflecting on a busy basketball weekend and sophomore year both in and out of the classroom. “For me it has always been sports, school, church and family. My parents have preached academics most of all, and said if I give my best to each one of those every single day, I should feel satisfied with the outcomes no matter what. So that’s how I try to live.” Enrolled in UNC’s KenanFlagler Business School’s undergraduate program, Maye manages the pressure of balancing academics and athletics with championship determination. As the 2017 Tyler Zeller Award winner as the team’s top student athlete, Maye says consistency and focus is key. “To me it’s not pressure, it is a matter of priority,” the two-

“It was pretty cool coming back into the locker room after Oregon,” Maye says. “Coach Williams told us that there are now only two teams left, just like last year, and this year we weren’t going to let what happened before happen again. That was the biggest thing, a great bonding experience, and we came through. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.” Then only Gonzaga remained. “When you play your game and do those little things together as a team, just like in a family, even when the pressure around you might seem to be greater, you get results and that’s what we did, especially those last few weeks of the season,” explains Maye. “That’s how we beat Gonzaga.” And now, chatting during a break from summer classes, early morning workouts and afternoon pick-up games, Maye is excited for more of the same. “I’m blessed to have won a national championship. That’s what every college athlete works for, and I’m excited to see what the next two years will bring. I just try to get better everywhere I can, and I’m looking forward to seeing what’s still to come.”

r. Todd Smith has a tape measure in his hand. The veterinarian is measuring the girth of a golden retriever named DAPHNE for a harness. The 2-year-old dog stands patiently as Todd gets the information he needs. While it’s obvious that he has a way with animals, it’s even more obvious that DAPHNE is not a typical golden retriever. Her calm demeanor coupled with her patience hints that there is much more to this animal than a game of fetch and a wagging tail. As a certified service dog, DAPHNE is a bundle of hope covered in fur for the Smith family.
A maddening ordeal The Smiths met DAPHNE through the Paws4People Foundation, a nonprofit based in Wilmington, North Carolina whose mission is to educate and empower people to utilize assistance dogs to transform their lives. That’s exactly what DAPHNE is doing for Ava Smith, Todd and Jenifer Smith’s 13-yearold daughter. The Smith family met DAPHNE in September of last year, and in December, DAPHNE moved into their Cornelius home. However, the story goes back much farther than that. It

Before all of this happened Ava was a healthy and happy tween, riding horses and performing in the school play. In fact, the November before the tremors began, Ava was the 2015 Pleasure Champion for the Walk, Trot, Cantor class for Ages 10 and Under at The National Academy Championship Horse Show in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Her love of horses, especially her horse, Tiffany, has been integral in her recovery, as horseback riding is part of her physical therapy, along with traditional physical therapy. Ava began riding again about a year ago, and she rides four times a week at Lenux Stables & Riding Academy in Huntersville. She goes to physical therapy twice a week at Novant Huntersville. The one thing all of the physicians involved in her case agree on is that physical therapy is imperative for her recovery, and it’s working, as she recently started walking again with the assistance of canes and braces. There is hope that Ava will eventually regain all of her mobility. The idea of a service dog came into the picture during one of Ava’s many hospitalizations. When she was a patient at Hemby
Children’s Hospital, she met a therapy dog named Gator. Todd is quick to point out that Gator, an Anatolian Shepherd, is not a certified service dog like DAPHNE. “The dogs that you see that go into nursing homes and go into schools to read to children, those are therapy dogs. There are different levels of therapy dogs,” explains Todd, adding that the dogs go through some basic testing and are not covered by the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). “There is almost nothing you have to do to become a therapy dog.” Later on when Ava was at Duke Medical Center, she and Jenifer began looking for rehab programs. One program they discovered had a therapy dog, and that’s when they began thinking of bringing a certified service dog into the rehabilitation process. Todd began researching the idea. “When we started looking at all of these organizations, you find out that there’s a lot of them out there that are just in it for the money,” he explains, adding that DAPHNE is ADA certified. “Paws4People has this extremely rigid training program that is usually a minimum of six months long. …Paws4People only places dogs with children and veterans.”

goes back to a day in February 2016 when Ava woke up with a tremor in her left hand. “The tremor moved from my hand to my forearm to my upper arm to my shoulder, and then down to both of my legs,” remembers Ava, a rising eighth grader at Davidson Day School. The tremors continued, and eventually Ava’s legs and left arm were paralyzed. That began months of hospitalizations at Hemby Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, Levine Children’s
Hospital, Duke Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Ava says she’s had 12 to 15 MRIs since this all began in addition to numerous doctor appointments, CT scans and cerebral spinal fluid taps. With all of these specialists using the latest diagnostic tools available, you would think she would have a concrete diagnosis. However, that’s not the case for Ava. “It all depends on which neurologist you talk to,” says Todd. “Some of them think its Lyme Disease. Some of them think that its immunemediated neuropathy myopathy. I would say out of 30 to 40 doctors, you can’t get more than three or four to agree on something.” Needless to say, the past year and half has been maddening for the Smith family. “The fear you experience with the unknown is bigger than life itself,” explains Jenifer. “Our family is living in a grey area with no black and white diagnosis, and there is no book that provides you with a step-by-step guide as to how to navigate these types of situations.” That said, the Smith family takes Ava’s condition day by day. The good news is that she is getting better, and DAPHNE is a big reason why.

When DAPHNE’s new harness arrives, it will allow her to serve as one of Ava’s canes. While that’s extremely helpful, DAPHNE offers Ava so much more, as she knows at least 100 commands and a number of signs. She also serves as a psychiatric alert for her. “She is able to detect anxiety before I’ve even got it. She’ll alert me, and she’ll take me away from something that I don’t want to be in. If she sees that I don’t want to talk to someone or I don’t like being touched, she’ll step in between me and that person. She wakes me up if I have a bad dream,” explains Ava. “She’s sassy like me. I trained her to high five me whenever I make a good pun or win an argument.” “The anxiety thing is really amazing. If Ava and I are both upset at the same time, she goes to both of us,” adds Jenifer. “Even though she’s not my dog, she knows I’m upset, too. She tries to comfort everybody, which I think is incredibly sweet.” The Smiths, including their 15-year-old son, Ian, agree that DAPHNE has a goofy side, and with all this family has been through, goofy is appreciated. Jenifer says that DAPHNE is one of the only good things to come out of this horrific ordeal. “Just knowing that Ava is happy, and that DAPHNE is the thing that makes her happy,” says Jenifer, “she definitely adds a different dynamic to our family.”

t’s challenging to design a space to accommodate the needs of all ages, but that’s exactly what interior designer Ally Whalen did for a family of eight in Cornelius. By listening to the needs and wants of the mother and father of six children ages 8 to 23, Whalen turned a sparse basement family members formerly tip-toed through on the way to somewhere else into a cozy space that’s almost impossible to leave.

The couple, which prefers to remain unnamed, moved to the Lake Norman area three years ago from Northern Virginia. One reason for the move was to create a fun and recreational environment that their older children would want to visit often. With that in mind, the home features a pool, Jet Skis and even a swirly slide on the dock. However, the basement wasn’t working for them. With plain white walls and leftover furniture from their Virginia home, the space looked and felt ignored. Whalen of Ally Whalen Design, and the owner of Simplicity Interiors in Old Town Cornelius, did some work for the family on the main floor of the home. The couple was so pleased with the results that they simply gave Whalen a budget for the basement and let her work her magic. “I trusted her [Whalen] implicitly because of her work prior,” says the mother. “We loved her [Whalen’s] style. Its

comfortable, relaxed elegance. I sometimes do formal parties, and I also do a lot of casual parties, and it always works both ways.” Whalen drew inspiration for the basement project from the space’s rich molding. “There was so much trim work in this room, but you didn’t see it because the walls were white and the trim was
fabrics,” explains Whalen. “They’re durable, washable and bleachable." Whalen continued her functional approach by having Burgess Supply Company, Inc. custom cut and bound onsite indoor/outdoor carpet for the space. She accented the carpet with indoor/outdoor rugs featuring blue and gray patterns.

“I knew that taking this room to a darker color wasn’t going to make it feel small just because of the immense amount of molding,” explains Ally Whalen.
The main area of the basement is subtly organized into sections. There’s the game area with pinball machines and a bar. Whalen painted the walls a light gray in this area and accented the coffered ceiling with the same Naval color used in the rest of the basement. In the center of the space is a conversation area featuring a navy sofa and two white swivel chairs with navy piping from Whalen’s Simplicity furniture line. “I knew the space needed to be kid friendly, so all of the fabrics are indoor/outdoor

“I still wanted it to be cozy, so there’s a rug over here and rug over there,” Whalen says. A round wicker coffee table adds texture to the sitting area, as does a wood side table. “Texture makes a space interesting,” explains Whalen. “It’s always nice to bring a natural element into the space.” The mother of the home says the sitting area works well for comfortable conversations and intense ones, as she says it sometimes serves as the teen interrogation room. In other instances, those same teens hang out in the space with their friends before venturing into the home theatre for a movie. The swivel chairs allow family members and guests to easily turn to the den area of the basement, which features a gray sectional sofa and a flat-screen TV. “It’s almost like stadium seating,” says Whalen, who replaced the formal white mantel with a piece of reclaimed wood that dates back 150 years. The mantel blends perfectly with the reclaimed brick of

white, so it all just blended in,” explains Whalen. “I knew that taking this room to a darker color wasn’t going to make it feel small just because of the immense amount of molding.” Taking a cue from the home’s waterfront location, Whalen selected a dark navy called Naval by Sherwin Williams for the walls. And just as she had envisioned, the darker color didn’t suffocate the space at all. Instead, it brought it to life.

the fireplace. That same brick, which came from a factory and a schoolhouse in Georgia, can also be found on the exterior of the home. The dark blue that pervades the design gives the space a nautical feel without being cute. “You’re not going to find any starfish or anchors in here. It’s the sophisticated look, and it’s not dated,” says Whalen. Adds the mother, “We have five boys and one girl. The teenagers and the younger adults, who are all male, find it more approachable, comfortable to hang out with these strong colors. …It’s got weight.”

think the best way to describe Jeffrey’s Restaurant in Mooresville is to call it the culinary version of the The Great American Songbook, as it offers classic American dishes that guests are familiar and comfortable with. No surprise, then, that Jeffrey’s wine list is a reflection of this, along with some tasty variations from the theme. To dig a little deeper, I sat down over a glass of Sauvignon Blanc with Bonnie Esposito, assistant manager in charge of the wine list. I’ve known Esposito for many years, as she was a driving force at the iconic Kudzu on South Broad in Mooresville before she watched it burn to the ground in 2004. She is a pioneer of fine dining in the lake area. I say that because it gave me a lot of confidence in her wine list, and I wasn’t disappointed. Let’s go back to The Great American Songbook. That pretty well sums up the main theme of Esposito’s list. It’s made up of mostly American wine, mostly from California. Wines that guests will be familiar with and won’t run into that wine inhibition — a fear of ordering something challenging or strange. The theme carries through to how the wine list is structured. There are about a dozen red wines by the glass and an equal number of white wines. The large number of wines
by the glass definitely makes choosing a wine easy and encourages guests to order wine with their meals. It also encourages guests to explore wine. I like that. But there’s much more to the list; some tasty nuggets as well a number of highend wines. Jeffrey’s certainly fits the classic and comfort mode, but it also has more than a few business clients both from the lake area and from out of town. There are four hotels in the area around Jeffrey’s, and business visitors tend to come in for a meal. They mostly gravitate to the special tunes. Perusing the list, there are several interesting wines from which to pick. After a quick glance, more than a couple caught my eye. I think that wines from Washington State are some of the best values you can find. I was particularly drawn to a Syrah that carries the wide Columbia Valley appellation, but, on closer examination, most of its grapes come from the smaller and very excellent Horse Heaven Hills region. Another that stood out was one of my wife’s favorites, a Grüner Veltliner from Austria — light and crisp, a great way to start a meal. A quick aside. The name, Grüner Veltliner, is a tough one to pronounce. So, we get into that wine ordering inhibition thing. There’s a way to tame that beast, give the
wine a nickname. How about combining the Grü and the V to come up with “Groovy”? What could be easier than ordering a "Groovy" wine?

At the top end of the list are some of the famous wines from the Napa Valley; wines like Stags’ Leap and Silver Oak. They’re priced more than a tad higher than most of the wines on the list but definitely in demand. And that brings me to a story that Esposito told me that exemplifies Jeffrey’s. A week or so before we sat down over that Sauvignon Blanc, a couple of regulars came in to dine along with their three young children The kids ate selections from the children’s menu, and the adults chose comfort food from the main menu. The kids sipped on soft drinks, and the adults tuned into a bottle of Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon. Custard 2 large eggs and 2 large egg yolks 1 1/4 cups whole milk (can use non-dairy milk if desired) 1 teaspoon organic corn starch 1-2 tablespoons organic powdered sugar ½-teaspoon vanilla bean powder or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Crust 1 cup (170 g) pastry or cassava flour 3 ½ ounces (100 g) cold unsalted butter 1 tablespoon organic powdered sugar 1 egg yolk 3-4 tablespoons cold water

Topping 1 cup thinly sliced fresh strawberries and blueberries or fruit of your choice
Instructions
Preheat oven to 375 F. Place flour and powdered sugar in a bowl and grate in butter. Mix lightly. Add egg and water, and stir in until a ball of dough forms. Roll out to ¼-inch thick between two sheets of parchment paper. Cut into rounds 1/2 inch bigger than each tart pan. Press a round into each tart pan, place directly on the oven rungs and bake for 7 to 9 minutes until slightly browned. Remove and cool. For the custard Heat the milk in a saucepan until just steaming. In a bowl, mix the eggs, yolks, sugar and corn starch, and gradually mix in a bit of the warm milk. Slowly mix the egg mixture into the milk, and heat on medium while continually whisking. Cook until mixture is steaming and thickened, then add in vanilla, remove and set aside to cool slightly. Pour custard into tart cases and chill. To serve, top with fruit of your choice. Makes 6- to 4-inch tarts or one 10-inch tart.

After work beverages, nibbles The beer garden adjacent to the café is an inviting space for people to gather after work for drinks. Benches and an Oktoberfest table provide ample outdoor seating. “It’s not a bar atmosphere, but it’s causal enough that people can come over, sit outside and enjoy a drink,” says Chung. Tim’s Table offers approximately 20 wines, as well as local beer on tap. Appetizers and light snacks, such as the hummus platter, flat breads, dips, bruschetta and hot pretzels, pair well with happy hour drinks. In addition to the menu, Chung was heavily involved in developing the eclectic look of the café. Here, patrons will not find perfectly matched décor. Chung finds beauty in flea market finds, and he breathes new life into them with a little paint and manual labor. “If it’s functional and comfortable, I’m going to put it in there [in the restaurant],” says Chung.

grits and sausage, and a quick cup of three different roasts of coffee. Lighter, healthier options include overnight oats and fruit, granola, and yogurt and smoothies. Lunch is also focused on speed, as the menu consists of sandwiches, salads and soups. Made fresh each day, soups use only gluten-free flour for thickening. “Lunch is going to be in and out. People only have so much time for lunch. If you have to travel, you really don’t have an hour to eat,” says Chung.
The need for speed Fast and friendly is Tim’s Table motto. Chung wants to fill the void left after Bob’s Grill, a longtime staple in Downtown Mooresville, closed. He believes people who work and visit Downtown Mooresville need a fast option for breakfast and lunch. The morning menu features hearty breakfast fare like biscuits and croissants,

hef Tim Chung has a vested interest in the success of Tim’s Table, a new café located in the Bridgetree Building in Downtown Mooresville. For Chung, the Main Street restaurant is about more than business. It’s about working in a community he loves and has lived in for more than 20 years. Mooresville is where he and his wife raised their two daughters, and the Chungs live within walking distance of the new downtown eatery. A classically trained chef in French and Italian cuisines, Chung began his restaurant career at age 15 as a hotel bus boy. He worked his way up the ranks of various restaurants and hotels to The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Naples, Florida. No stranger to historic Downtown Mooresville’s restaurant scene, Chung worked for six years as Chef de Cuisine at the acclaimed Epic Chophouse. Tim’s Table marks the veteran chef ’s first venture into restaurant ownership. “It’s a little scary, but I’ve been running places for 20 years, and I’ve been doing this close to 40 years,” says Chung.

On May 6, some of the area’s cutest and “most liked” dogs competed to be on the cover of our July issue. CURRENTS 2017 Canine Cover Competition took place at Davidson’s Town Day. WBTV’s Paul Cameron emceed the event, while the staff of CURRENTS served as the judges. The top 10 finalists were selected through a Facebook competition. Dog owners posted pictures of their furry friends and wrote a brief description of why their pooch should be on the cover. The 10 finalists with the most likes competed in the live competition on Town Day. This year’s winner is CRASH, an Australian Shepherd owned by Joel Sprinkle and Flame Deal of Mooresville. Bauer, owned by Julia and Craig Micallef of Davidson, won first runnerup, and Boone, owned by Kendal Brooks of Mooresville, won second runner-up.

The Fur Ball — A Prom for Paws was held on May 20 at Heritage House in Mooresville. Presented by Pet Pilgrimage Crematory Memorials, a Division of Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, the event raised funds for Catering to Cats & Dogs. Pets and their owners enjoyed dinner and dancing. In addition to more than 40 dogs, a friendly pig named Matilda, Snap (a baby alligator) and a little newt attended. Guests who made reservations prior to the event were able to enter their pets in an online Pet Superlative Photo Contest. Among the superlatives were Prom King and Queen. Cam Shaft won King, and Porsha Severence won Queen.

ust as there are five food groups, my husband’s interests in life can easily be organized into five categories. There are the kids and I, classic cars, music, sweet tea and water skiing. While I’d like to think the kids and I have first place locked in, water skiing gives us a run for our money every summer. My husband, John, grew up on a Lake Norman, where he learned to ski at a young age. Ever since he slid on his first slalom ski, his passion for the sport hasn’t wavered. I waterski, but I can take it or leave it. John will never leave it. This past year he became friends with a man named Marty Mancuso, a Cornelius resident who shares the same passion for skiing. With the help of wet suits, these two ski on Lake Norman year round. It was Mancuso who suggested that John join the Lake Norman Ski Club, which he did late this spring. That said, this is more of a Lori and John’s Larks.

Founded more than 25 years ago, the Lake Norman Ski Club exists to preserve and protect the sport of slalom skiing. Every Tuesday night from 5-7:30 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day, members of the club gather at the beach behind Eddie’s in Mooresville to ski. You have to be a member to participate. However, if you want to watch, you can simply stand on the beach or chill on Eddie’s patio. On the night that I went to watch, I was allowed to ride in the boat, but that’s not normal for spectators. (Being an editor
has its privileges.) Clay Brown of Sherrills Ford drove his sweet Ski Nautique boat for the skiers that evening. Each skier gets four passes on a course of buoys. The course retracts under the water once the skiing is over. On my first ride I watched Joanna Hudson and Linda Smith-Secola, both residents of Mooresville, ski. Smith-Secola moved here a year ago from Cary just to join the club and ski more. During my next ride, I watched Keith Watkins, president of the club, ski. When he told Brown that he wanted to ski at 34 miles per hour, Brown turned to me and said, “That’s fast, so hold on.” I’ve been waterskiing since I was 8 years old, and I’ve never seen anyone ski a course at that speed — neither has John for that matter. It was a treat, albeit a fast one. Watkins says he pushes himself to ski so he can stay in shape. “I have weights at home
that I never use,” he told me. “This is my workout.” After Watkins skied, 79-yearold Bill Glover jumped in the water for his turn. As I watched Glover ski, I hoped John and I would also be able to do the same at his age. He was an inspiration. The evening was a casual affair filled with comradery and, of course, a love of skiing. Joan Danielson, Watkins’ other half, keeps everything organized and makes sure members have a turn and stay hydrated. The club even has T-shirts. Everyone was supportive and friendly, as they want each member to ski to his or her best potential. I plan to watch on many more Tuesday nights. Eventually John and I will get our twins out there, as they’re about ready to put on their first set of skis. What a proud daddy moment that will be.
