Classic Cars “I BY » Peter Eisenhauer

f you drive a ‘56 Impala you will always draw a crowd, people will want to know the story of the car.” So says Deborah West, owner of Classic Lady Motors, a collector car marketing service headquartered in Cornelius. West moved to the area 19 years ago from Chicago after visiting a friend in the area and loving it. She had started selling classic cars and found the region with its ties to NASCAR and large numbers of car enthusiasts was an ideal base. “I networked into a business, all by word of mouth, based on convenience to the customer,” West said. Looking at trends in the market today, West said, “muscle cards always do well.” She sees the leaders currently are ‘60s and ‘70s muscle cars such as Ford Mustangs and Chevy Camaros. John Gibson, sales manager at Shelton Classics and Performance, a consignment dealer in Mooresville, 10 LimitlessMagOnline.com | March 2022

also sees a strong market for 80s muscle cars, such as Mustangs and Corvettes, particularly if they are in original condition, Gibson said. There is also increased interest in Buick Grand Nationals, one of the hot performance cars of the 1980s. Gibson also sees strength in the market for early 70s pickups, such as the Chevrolet K10. The 4-wheel-drive models sell best. Gibson sees a softer markets for prewar vehicles. As older models become more difficult to maintain, many end up as decor. And the market is currently flooded with mid-50s Chevy cars, like the Bel Air. “Prices on some of those models are down by half,” Gibson said. “You never know what will increase the market value,” said Gibson. “A movie or TV show might feature a model and suddenly it takes off.” West sees trends in car collecting mostly based on the successive

generations of buyers. Millenials who have now come of age and have the money are looking for the cars of the ‘80s and ‘90s that they admired back in the day. “It’s always a sentimental reason, like ‘I drove that car in high school.’,” West said. Many of the younger buyers are keen on finding Ford Broncos and other off-road vehicles. Although the classic car market is active year-round, spring is always the busiest season, with another peak in early autumn when there are also some major car shows. In spring, people are getting out more. Driving their cars. “You don’t want to drive a classic car in inclement weather,” West said. “They need to be kept out of the elements.” Gibson said that along with the better driving weather, spring-time also brings tax returns to many collectors, which can often make a nice downpayment on a desired acquisition.

As far as prices in the classic market, West cites data that shows whereas the cost of used cars overall has increased 20% because of the impact of the pandemic, classic car prices have only increased about 10%. There is a different dynamic driving the overall increase in used car prices -- with the knock on effect of supply-chain disruptions in new car production propping up demand for late model used cars. The relatively lower price increases for collector cars are not a sign of market weakness, though. Both Gibson and West noted the record sales volume at the trend-setting Barret-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona this January. Sales were up 22% over 2020, with over $195.9 million changing hands in deals on 1,857 cars. That’s an average price of $105,000, just for reference. That show also saw $7.3 million in sales of “automobilia,” items such as vintage gas pumps and neon dealership signs. The auction also featured sales of NFTs (nonfungible tokens) commemorating sales of certain signature cars. The current economy also bodes well, as historically, West has found

that higher inflation rates encourage classic car purchases. “People want to put their money in something tangible.” Good sources of information on the classic car market include companies specialized in insuring collector cars, including Hagerty Insurance (hagerty.com), and J.C. Taylor Insurance (jctaylor.com). Their respective websites include valuation guides and background information. Of course, there’s nothing like seeing a great collection of cars in person. In addition to visiting dealer showrooms, car shows are a great opportunity. Classic car enthusiasts will want to mark their calendar for the next Charlotte AutoFair, which will take place April 7-10 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) - Hornets Nest Region has been sponsoring the event for over 35 years. The April show will include about 10,000 assigned spaces and organizers are expecting over 150,000 buyers and restorers to attend. Along with considerations of personal taste and market value, West notes that collectors need to pay attention

to the cost of maintaining their vintage automobiles. Parts can be difficult to find, expensive, or simply not available. She cites a customer who owns a 1928 Auburn and can’t find fuel gauge for it. This can be an issue even with later model cars, when they have gone out of production or been acquired by other producers. But car collectors are not easily deterred. And many persist in the hobby despite their best intentions to move on. West speaks of one client who came to her with the intention of selling off everything in his collection. But like many, once he sold one car, he was ready to buy another. “Twelve years later, he’s still at it,” West reports. Herself the once and probably future owner of a 1960 Cadillac convertible, she understands the draw of the older cars. “There was more art, more beauty in the designs, big fins, lots of chrome,” West said. Gibson and West both say that if you do have that collectible car you are ready to let go, now is the time. “It’s a great time to sell,” West said. There is plenty of demand, Gibson adds, and he is looking to build up inventory.

I

Before You File, and After

f you haven’t filed your 2021 tax return yet, here are a few things to remember before you get started. Taking the steps to file a complete and accurate 2021 tax return will ensure that you get your full tax refund if the IRS owes you, or help you avoid further expense and trouble if it turns out you still owe some tax. After you are done, particularly if you work with a professional, the information from your tax return might provide some data points and motivation to make adjustments that help you reach your financial goals. One thing you definitely want to avoid this year is filing on paper if you are owed a refund. The current IRS backlog in processing those returns will guarantee you a very long wait for your money. The better options are to file electronically through tax preparation software, Free File on IRS.gov, or a professional tax preparer. Be sure to set up direct deposit also. The IRS says that for people with no issues with the tax return, most taxpayers will receive their refund within 21 days, if they file electronically and choose direct deposit. To prepare your tax return you will need the documentation showing all your sources of income, all your deductions, and credits. That means W-2s, 1099s, receipts, canceled checks, etc. You will want to compile all year-end income documents, such as Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Income; Form 1099-INT, Interest Income; Form 1099-NEC, Nonemployee Compensation; Form 1099-G, Certain Government Payments, like unemployment compensation or state tax refund; and Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statements. You might also need IRS Letter 6475, that provides the total amount of the third Economic Impact Payments, and IRS Letter 6419, if you received advance Child Tax Credit payments in 2021. The IRS advises that you wait to be sure you have all 2021 tax information before filing. Gaps or discrepancies between the information you put on the return and what the IRS has already received from your employer 12 LimitlessMagOnline.com | March 2022

BY » Peter Eisenhauer

and others could lead to a processing delay and possibly trigger an audit. An extensive list and links to detailed information is available on the IRS website, www.irs.gov. Just search for Publication 5348 on the site for steps you can take to prepare to file a 2021 tax return. This includes information about viewing or creating an Online Account; it’s now easier for more taxpayers to use the new Secure Access Digital Identity (SADI) process to verify their information. The page also explains how to make sure there’s been enough tax withheld, and how to set up a bank account for direct deposit of tax refunds. This year in particular, the IRS and many experts emphasize that you might want to file a 2021 tax return, even if you aren’t required to file. If you qualify for certain tax credits or already paid some federal income tax by having taxes withheld from a paycheck you may qualify for a tax refund. But you won’t get that refund unless you file a return. This includes individuals who didn’t qualify for the third Economic Impact Payment or did not receive the full amount, who may be eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit based on their 2021 tax situation. If you are eligible, you will need to file a 2021 tax return, even if you don’t usually file, to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit. To do that, you need the total amount of your third Economic Impact Payment, including any supplemental or “plusup” payments, to file your return accurately and avoid a processing delay that may delay your refund. That information will be available to taxpayers from Letter 6475, which the IRS has been sending out, or by logging in to their IRS Online Account. Another area that could be confusing because of the special circumstances over the last two years is unemployment compensation. Millions of Americans received unemployment compensation last year, and it’s fully taxable in 2021. That’s a change from last year, when The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 allowed an exclusion of unemployment compensation of up to $10,200 for 2020

only. Looking forward for 2022, if you receive unemployment payments and federal taxes are not being withheld, you may need to make estimated tax payments during the year. The IRS reports that there were millions more errors on 2020 tax returns than in previous years, including those requiring special handling by an IRS employee, to correct the Recovery Rebate Credit amount. That’s why it says it is so important to have the total amount of the tax year 2021 third Economic Impact Payments, and advance payments of the Child Tax Credit, in addition to normal income documents. The IRS has special advice if you are among the many whose tax return from 2020 is still being processed. When filing your tax return electronically you need to provide the Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI, from your most recent tax return. But if you are still waiting for your 2020 tax return to be processed, the system does not recognize the AGI from the return. In that situation, the correct number to enter for last year’s AGI on your 2021 tax return is $0 (zero dollars). So, sometime between now and April 18, after you have filed your return, it’s a good time to compare your results with previous years. In its quarterly 1040 News Mooresville Tax Service provides a helpful guide to questions you might ask yourself or a professional advisor. These include: • what life changes do you anticipate in the next year that might impact your tax situation? • should you adjust your retirement contributions to pre-tax (eg. 401k) or post-tax (eg Roth 401k) plans. The question here is do you want the tax savings now or in the future? • would an HSA (Health Savings Account) work for you? • should you adjust your nonsheltered investments? Derek Bostian, of Two Waters Wealth Management, in Huntersville, says that “when it comes to investing, it’s not how much you earn that matters. It’s how much you keep.”

The Ides of March Throughout History BY » Mickey Dunaway

This month’s Moment in Time looks at The Ides of March. Whether fact or fiction, strange things seem to occur on this day. The Ides of March occurs on March 15th of each year, and in Imperial Rome, a week of festivals and feasting were kicked off by the ides. Rome did not count days of the month as we do. They structured their year and calendar by phases of the moon. Thus, the Ides of March signified the first full moon of their new year.

44 BC

1941

Julius Caesar was murdered while in the Roman senate. Fifty-five years old, he was stabbed at least 23 times by a group of senators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus. At least 60 senators were in on the conspiracy to assassinate the dictator. And you thought you would never use your sophomore English class!

1360

While English King Edward was on a pillaging campaign in France, a French raiding party engaged in a 48-hour spree of their own of rape, pillage, and murder in southern England. Then, King Edward interrupted his spree to launch reprisals on the French. Tit for tat has always defined FrenchEnglish relations. In WWII, a French General who was to be transported to North Africa to lead the Free French against German General Rommel would not be secreted out of France on an English submarine. So General Eisenhower replaced the English submarine captain with an American, and all was resolved! 14 LimitlessMagOnline.com | March 2022

Russian Czar Nicholas and his family

1917

Russian Czar Nicholas abdicated his throne. The last of a 304-year-old dynasty, his abdication paved the way for Bolshevik rule. Nicholas and his family were executed in July 1918 by firing squad. I visited Russia in 1991 when it was still the Soviet Union, and I remember being taken aback by the condition of the cities and the lives of the people and at the same time how prized were the treasures of Czarist Russia found in museums in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

A deadly blizzard swept across North Dakota and Minnesota, killing 60 people who were routinely traveling in their cars in a light snow when a massive front roared through with hurricane-strength winds dropping temperatures 20 degrees in 15 minutes and leaving snowdrifts as high as seven feet. It is still known as the most severe blizzard in modern U.S. history and occurred only a week away from the first day of spring.

2003

A mystery respiratory disease that affected people in China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Canada was identified as a sudden acute respiratory disorder and given the acronym of SARS. SARS never reached a pandemic state but was a precursor to COVID as it affected patients so suddenly. COVID, SARS, and MERS are all related, except that SARS and MERS had a much greater death rate, while COVID moved much faster in infecting people.

Wellness, located in Cornelius, North Carolina. U.S. News & World Report ranked the Frontier University Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree 37th in its ranking of Best Nursing Schools. Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence--so the blood, sweat, and tears it took to earn their advanced doctorate degrees is well worth it.

Dr. Micah Kirscher and Dr. Coral Kirscher established Renew Health and Wellness in 2018 as a “true private practice, which is unheard of these days,” stated Dr. Micah Kirscher. “Our approach allows us to be totally patientoriented, since we are not driven to meet patient visit ‘quotas’ like the large medical conglomerates. We offer cutting edge, non-surgical, non-steroidal treatments for people with chronic pain such as arthritis, tendon, and soft

tissue injuries, and these treatments are now covered by Medicare.” They are both board certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American Academy of Procedural Medicine. “We are extremely proud to be nurse practitioners, as our model of training blends the best of traditional medicine, preventive medicine, and wellness,” said Dr. Coral Kirscher. “Our train of thought is to treat the underlying cause of the disease or condition instead of writing pharmaceutical prescriptions for a group of symptoms.”
What motivated the Kirschers to become interested in opening a medical clinic in the Lake Norman area specializing in regenerative medicine for knee pain, shoulder pain, and elbow pain and the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries? They responded: “Being physically active is important to both of us. We love being able to help people maintain or get back their quality of life. Coral

and I want to be able to still do the things we love to do now, when we are 85. Being able to help others achieve this same goal is the most rewarding thing in the world and it’s why we come to work every morning. About 90% of our patient base at Renew Health and Wellness is over the age of 65 and suffer from chronic (over 3 months) knee pain, shoulder pain, elbow back, back pain. Chronic wear and tear on joints can be such a detrimental issue for some people. A large portion of our patient population has arthritis of the knees and we help get them back on their feet and gain their quality of life back.” Renew Health and Wellness medical specialties are non-surgical and drug-free treatments. The clinic uses highly concentrated connective tissue allografts that contain cytokines and growth factors to help ease pain, improve physical function, and repair damaged tissues. These treatments for knee, shoulder, back, elbow, neck, and back pain are all covered by Medicare.

In 2021, Renew Health and Wellness became the first clinic nationwide to introduce a regenerative connective tissue matrix injection with Medicare coverage. “Without a doubt, we see chronic knee pain, shoulder pain, hip pain, and back pain most frequently in our clinic,” Micah Kirscher stated. “With Cornelius being such a large golf and tennis community, we also see our fair share of patients experiencing elbow pain.” Having aches and pains that interrupt the day can be frustrating. “We tell everyone...don’t let pains ruin your plans anymore,” Coral Kirscher said. “There are proven alternative treatments available that will help you enjoy living. Cottage Pie

I love the simplicity of Irish fare - rustic food that is the epitome of hearty and comforting, and prepared with the most basic ingredients. This Cottage Pie checks all of those boxes, and will be a perfect dish to serve your family on St. Patrick’s Day! At its heart, Cottage Pie is simply sauteed ground beef and vegetables, topped with fluffy mashed potatoes, and baked until golden brown. That’s it! So simple, yet so comforting, which explains why it’s a classic. You may have heard of Cottage Pie, and assumed it was an actual pie, with a pastry crust, similar to the American classic, Chicken Pot Pie. However, this traditional Irish dish is prepared as a savory casserole, featuring ground beef and a potato topping. (No pie crust here!) Fun fact: Essentially the same recipe is called Shepherd’s Pie when ground lamb is used instead of beef ! In this version, I took a few shortcuts that add great flavor, while saving you time! Check out the recipe below!

Skillet Cottage Pie

Servings: 6 Prep time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 48 minutes

Ingredients

1 tablespoon olive oil 1 1/4 pound ground beef 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1 large onion - finely diced 1 clove garlic - minced 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1 package dry onion soup mix (1.9 oz. - such as Lipton’s) 1 cup beef broth (low sodium) 2 cups (10 oz.) frozen veggies ( medley of peas, carrots, green beans and corn) 1 (24 oz.) package store-bought Mashed Potatoes (such as Bob Evans)

Directions

Time Saving Tips: Cottage pie is easy enough to make, but you can simplify your life even further with these shortcuts! • Season your beef with onion soup mix - adds the perfect amount of flavor! • Use a frozen veggie medley - not only are you saving time in chopping, but frozen vegetables are cheaper, and are frozen at peak ripeness - Win-win! • Buy store-bought mashed potatoes - Homemade mashed potatoes are lovely, but really, who has the time? 20 LimitlessMagOnline.com | March 2022

• Preheat the oven 350 F degrees. • Prepare the meat mixture: Heat the oil in a large cast iron skillet (or large oven safe skillet) over Medium heat. Add the ground beef to the skillet, season it with the salt and pepper and cook it for about 5 minutes or until it’s no longer pink, breaking it up as you go along. • Add the onion and garlic and cook for 3 more minutes until the onion softens and becomes translucent. Add the pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, onion soup mix, beef broth and stir. Stir in the frozen veggies and cook for a couple more minutes. Remove from heat and set aside. • Meanwhile, prepare mashed potatoes per package instructions. Then, spread the potatoes over the meat mixture and smooth with a spoon. Take a fork and rough up the top a bit. Bake for 40 minutes until golden brown on top. • Garnish with chopped parsley and pepper and serve warm.

Irish Coffee

Ireland is known worldwide for the phrase, “Céad Míle Fáilte.” Its literal translation is “one hundred thousand welcomes”. If ever a drink could symbolize this sentiment of Irish hospitality, it would be Irish Coffee. Made from only 4 ingredients, this coffee beverage will warm and comfort you from the inside out! Not only is it delicious, it will leave you wanting more! Irish Coffee has become one of the most popular drinks in the world, but you may not know that the recipe only came about thanks to a wicked Irish storm in the 1940s. The year was 1943 when a Pan Am flight to New York city had to turn back around to the Foynes Airport, in county Limerick. In light of the horrible weather a local chef, Joe Sheridan, was asked to prepare hot food and drinks for the passengers. Joe did as requested, deciding to add some good Irish whisky to the coffees he served. It is said that he was asked if it was Brazilian coffee and replied “No, this is Irish coffee.” And so, the now world-famous drink was born. If you asked Joe, this is how he described the recipe of a true Irish Coffee: Cream - Rich as an Irish Brogue Coffee - Strong as a Friendly Hand Sugar - Sweet as the tongue of a Rogue Whiskey - Smooth as the Wit of the Land Here is how you can make your own Irish Coffee! Sláinte!

Irish Coffee Serves: 1

Paraty

Sunset on the mountains across the bay from Paraty

A small village off the coast of Brazil made an indelible impression

razil is famous for Rio de Janeiro and its flamboyant carnival. Over the years, my wife, Mary Ellen, and I have spent quite some time in Rio; enjoyable time. But what really sticks out in our memories is a small village that’s distant from Rio in mileage, culture and atmosphere—Paraty. That’s “Par-AAH-chee” in Portuguese. The village is located on a large, serene bay and is surrounded by jungle covered mountains. It dates way back in history. Today, it has the look and feel of a colonial Portuguese village. The colonial core of Paraty is the Centro Histórico. It’s like entering another era. It has whitewashed mansions, baroque churches and lots of cobblestone streets. It’s a town for walking around. No cars are allowed except once a week for deliveries to homes and restaurants. Part of the Portuguese influence is those old churches, all interesting but one always pulls us to it. Back in the day, churches served a definite social hierarchy. The one that draws us, Igreja de Santa Rita, was at the lowest level on the list. It was founded in 1722 by freed African slaves. It was built by, and for, all those considered not white enough to

attend the church of the ruling elite. These would have included indigenous people and freed slaves. The church was deconsecrated and now serves as a museum of sacred art. Pretty neat. Some context. Paraty was shaped by two defining eras, one of which is the reason we keep coming back. In 1696, one of the world’s richest gold mines was discovered in the mountains. For logistical and political reasons, Paraty became an export port for gold to Rio de Janeiro and then on to Portugal. The ensuing gold rush led to the construction of the “Caminho do Ouro—Gold Trail.” This is a 1,200 kilometer road, paved in steep areas with large stones. It connected the mines to Paraty. Paraty became a boom town. Pirates soon noticed the gold export business and ships became easy and profitable targets. The boom died out. Then farming took over. It became a lucrative business. The production of sugar and cachaça, Brazilian rum, were very important to Paraty. The quality of the local cachaça became recognized worldwide. For a long time the word paraty was used as a synonym to cachaça. That’s what interests us. And that brings us to Caipirinhas. A Caipirinha is Brazil’s national cocktail. It is made with cachaça, sugar, and

crushed limes. Simple but delicious. I drink only wine and not hard liquor but I have a soft spot for Caipirinhas. As Paraty is, basically, the home of cachaça it seems only right to visit from time to time and pay homage. So we do. When we visit, we get on the side streets of the Centro Histórico and pick out some small restaurant for lunch. A Caipirinha to start, of course. And then a dish of local seafood and some interesting wine. Generally we opt for Brazilian wine but, the last time we were there, something else caught our eye. We’re very fond of wines from a region of Chile, to the very north of the country, the Limari Valley. Rarely seen at home but there was one on the wine list of the restaurant. We opted for it. A great lunch, a great wine and some live, soft background samba music. I was in a happy place. It’s odd what memories stay embedded. I love the whole feel of Paraty. I just like being there. But one thing sticks, indelibly, in my mind. It is the view of the mountains across the bay at sunset. The whole sky is pink and there’s a mist covering the mountains. Perfect. I can’t wait to see it again as soon as this COVID nonsense clears up. And I’m sure there’s a Caipirinha with my name on it.

HowtoMake Adjustments On-Course When

the Ball Is Above Your Feet

H

ave you ever played a golf course where every swing is a perfect, flat lie? If so, I want to know what course! However, most likely you will experience a variety of lies throughout the 18 holes. Let’s get you prepared to navigate how to control the ball and confidently swing when trying to hit one of the most common uneven lies: ball above your feet. Learning how to manage the setup will help create solid contact and reduce curve; it’s actually somewhat simple. Follow these steps to help swing with confidence when managing a

swing with the ball above your feet. 1. Grip down on the club to make it shorter being that the ball is closer to your stance 2. Open the club face 3. Move the ball back 2 inches from your standard ball position depending on your club choice 4. Drop your lead foot back 2 inches off the target line 5. Smile and take a full swing The intention is to reduce the curve immediately following contact and make the ball fly straighter through the air. However, there would be situations where you would want to play the curve in

which you would setup like your normal stance and allow the slope to curve the ball. Give it a try and get confident with each approach. Estate administration ... known as Probate

Senior Advisors help navigate your journey

A

A

fter losing a loved one, one of the first questions people ask is how to access and distribute the assets belonging to the deceased person (referred to as the “Decedent”). Estate administration, also known as Probate, may be necessary in order to access assets, including real and personal property, titled in the Decedent’s sole name. In North Carolina, estate administration is overseen by the Clerk of Superior Court. Whether or not the Decedent died with or without a Will, a full estate administration in North Carolina requires a Personal Representative to do several things, including: • Filling out and submitting an application, oath, and bond form • Collecting and preserving assets • Opening an estate bank account • Filing a publication of Notice to Creditors in the local paper • Completing an inventory within 90 days • Selling assets • Paying or rejecting creditors • Transferring assets to heirs or beneficiaries • Filing an annual or final account with the Clerk of Court The Personal Representative must follow the probate laws in North Carolina. If the Personal Representative does not follow the law correctly, he or she may be subject to being removed as the personal representative, being fined, and/or being held in contempt of court. The probate rules and procedures are complex. Therefore, it is best to consult with a probate lawyer to assist in the estate administration process. Who Gets Your Stuff …

Will World War III Break Out in YOUR Living Room?

W

wrong.

hen you die, your family will be left to divide your belongings. While this is not breaking news, and you may have already made a Will (good job!), there is one item that may, and often does, go horribly

You want to treat your loved ones fairly, and your Will may call for an equal division amongst them, but what about all the things the Will does not specifically mention? This is likely your tangible personal property, better known as your “stuff.” Who gets the TV? The paintings? The antiques you inherited from your own parents? While the fair market value of these items may be low, the emotional or sentimental value is quite high. Many a family squabble has broken out over who gets what after Mom and Dad are gone. Sadly, many of those squabbles lead to words that cannot be taken back and relationships that can never be repaired. How can we avoid this outcome? There are a number of options to consider. It may be as simple as listing items specifically in your Will. You may have a separate memorandum that you attach to your Will specifying who gets what. You may have a family discussion with all involved to make a plan. You may direct your executor to hold an auction/ estate sale or to have everyone “draw straws.” There are a number of options to consider. Some of them are legally binding. Others are not but may still be effective for your family and situation. If you are not sure which option provides the best plan for preserving family harmony, or if you know you need a legally binding plan that will be as “bulletproof” as possible, consult an attorney experienced in estate planning to start planning now.

True WealthBeing Fearless

I

recently read an article that cited a statistic that said that approximately 40% of Americans fear retirement more than death. I can only assume that this is a perfect example of fear of the unknown. My article in February’s Limitless issue, focused on reframing the event to be the idea of retirement as the beginning of an adventure instead of the end of a predictable period in life. The transition may still take some adjustments, like many of the other life transitions, but the mental outlook can be better. How do you approach some of the top fears? They include concerns about income and healthcare benefits, followed closely by continued mental/ physical activity and then social connectivity. This is why retirement planning should definitely be more than just the numbers, but to ignore the numbers is a mistake too. I started this year with my January article about basic social security claiming strategies and this month I want to address the other major retirement worry-healthcare. There are many Medicare insurance professionals who are dedicated to helping individuals with this topic, but I do believe in self education; enabling you to be an active participant in building the best personal solution for you. First and foremost, Medicare is available for people 65 and older. If you are retiring “early”, a gap strategy will be critical to get you to Medicare. The government website Medicare.gov is an excellent place to start and a review of their booklet, “Your Medicare Benefits”, will help continue your education. The best way to tackle fears is to meet them head on. The way to get past the statistical “biggest fears” of retirement is to gain knowledge and get a plan in place. I would suggest putting exercise and social interactions in the bucket of –”Let’s go enjoy retirement” with activities that accomplish both such as mixed doubles pickleball. It’s exercise, social, fun and relatively easy to learn. Seems to check all of the important boxes. While there are going to be unknowns, being equipped with knowledge and options can minimize your fears. The greatest adventure is what lies ahead. J.R.R.
