For the Lake Norman area’s 55+ adults who place no limits on living their best lives!

Publisher MacAdam Smith Mac@LNCurrents.com

Beach Life I’ve always been a beach girl. My parents owned a camper when I was very small, and my brothers and I enjoyed many summer days playing in the ocean water and hanging out in the kids’ area at every campground along the South Carolina coast. We danced to the beach music, played every arcade game that spit out tickets and exchanged them for a plastic spider ring or maybe even a bead necklace! When I became a teenager, they sold their camper and bought a second home (a small mobile home) south of the Myrtle Beach area. My teenage years were spent rubbing baby oil and iodine all over my body and getting burned to a pulp in the hopes my bright red skin would turn into a glorious bronze. (I don’t recommend this, by the way). As a young adult, my parents moved the mobile home to the North Carolina coast where things were a little less commercialized and my days there were filled with relaxing out of the sun and reading a good book. It was great having

a place to escape to after a crazy work week, where all you had to worry about is getting to the shore early enough each morning to find a few shark’s teeth or a perfectly formed conch shell. My son enjoyed fishing on the surf and checking out girls sunning on the sand. My parents sold that beach house over 30 years ago, but the love of the beach never left me. There’s just something about the feeling of the sand between my toes, the beach music playing loud on the boardwalk and the smell of funnel cakes, corn dogs and that good ole’ coastal taffy, that keeps bringing me back there. My husband and I bought a second home in North Myrtle Beach 10 years ago. Although I love living at Lake Norman and am proud to call it home, I

must admit that traveling down Hwy 74 to 501 still gets my blood flowing and making that turn down Ocean Drive gives me a feeling like no other. I’m ready to strap on my shaggin’ shoes, grab a fried bologna sandwich from Fat Harold’s, cake on the sunscreen and head out to the ocean. I hope this summer you’ll get out and explore the shores of North and South Carolina. There’s so much to see and do. Take a ride on the ferry from Southport to Fort Fisher in North Carolina or enjoy the rides and attractions in downtown Myrtle Beach. If you’re hungry for good local seafood, check out Calabash, located right on the border of the NC and SC coast. Or you could always just grab a good book, a chair and an umbrella, put your toes in the sand, and enjoy a day full of nothing. That’s my very favorite kind of beach day! Enjoy your travels,

On Island Discover a change of pace with an off-the-grid vacation BY » Allison Andrews Photos courtesy of » Allison Andrews

TIME

Multigenerational travel gives grandparents and grandchildren time to bond.

The lookout on the property at Old House Cay off the coast of Hilton Head Island was perfect for spotting dolphins.

M

y mom was worried about sharks and tsunamis. That wasn’t the response I expected when I asked my parents to join my daughter and me on a private island off the South Carolina coast for a short vacation. Mom was only half-joking, but the thought of a little peace and quiet outweighed her worry. As the oldest of 6 kids, family time usually involves the holidays, a special occasion, or 20 other people, making 10 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2021

quality, one-on-one time hard to come by. After being separated much of the year by pandemic restrictions, getting together was long overdue. More people are seeing the value of traveling with extended family. Multigenerational travel was on the increase before the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel experts predict it will continue to grow at an even faster pace now. Science supports the benefits. One study published by the Society

for Research in Child Development shows positive connections between grandparents and grandchildren impact how kids view the elderly in general. Researchers at the University of Oxford also found that kids’ overall mental well-being is boosted by spending time with grandparents. Planning a multigenerational vacation has its challenges, however. When you are traveling with different age groups, it is essential the location offer something for everyone. Grandma and

More people are seeing the value of traveling with extended family. Multigenerational travel was on the increase before the COVID-19 pandemic. Travel experts predict it will continue to grow at an even faster pace now.

Grandpa (or, in our case, Mamaw and Papaw) don’t always want to do the same things that the kids want to do. The Islands along the Carolina coastline provide a solution. We arrived on the Private Island of Old House Cay just off the coast of Hilton Head by boat. The only home on the property is a modern off-grid Airbnb. The house, which sleeps six people, features a 360-degree porch. The home runs entirely on solar power and battery-powered generators. The experience revealed a few strategies to help you plan your own trip.

Give everyone a say

Ask everyone going on the trip what they want to do. Put the activities with the most votes toward the top of the todo list. Everyone in our group wanted to try crabbing. This was a great activity that everyone could do together. My dad and my teenage daughter loved taking the lead on this one. Remember grandparents like to watch grandchildren have fun. My daughter and I were the only ones who felt up to a little kayaking around the island, but mom and dad were happy to watch from the shoreline and take pictures.

Allow for alone time but plan a few scheduled activities together. All good vacations have a few donothing moments. In our case, mom retreated to the porch to read while my daughter ascended the stairs to the cupola to scroll on her phone. But the most fun was our time together. Dolphin watching was a win for everyone. We planned walks to the Dolphin tower based on the times best known for spotting dolphins. We saw a lot of dolphins! Many coastal islands offer tours. Look for homes with unique features to start fun conversations. This home had an outdoor shower. My dad could have cared less. My mom loved it. My daughter thought it was weird at first, but after blaring some music on her phone (which she could do because we were the only ones around), she decided it was cool. Wrap up the day together Multigenerational trips are great for family bonding. S’mores and stars around a firepit created the perfect setting for lots of stories around the campfire. Spending actual quality time on a Carolina Island is the slowdown we ALL need.

A few islands to consider While there aren’t many options for private islands around the Carolinas, there are several islands worth considering for multigenerational vacations that don’t require a full day’s drive to the Outer Banks. Bald Head Island sits at the tip of Cape Fear in North Carolina. It’s nationally recognized for its bird and sea turtle nesting populations, but kids might know it for the Island’s three lighthouses, including the famed Old Baldy. South Carolina’s Sea Islands including Hilton Head, Daufuskie, Kiawah, Edisto, or Fripp Island offer various upscale resort-style accommodations and remote vacation home rentals.

Dazzling Cape Romain features beach, shells, gators, birds Article and photography by » Jim Tobalski

W

hen my friends initially hear me talk about her, they think I’m in love with another woman. I’m not. But I can’t help but swoon over one of the most fascinating places along the South Carolina Coast: Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Located just north of Charleston, Cape Romain is preserved and protected as a national wildlife refuge, one of 567 with that designation in the United States. North Carolina features 11 national wildlife refuges and South Carolina eight. Many of our country’s national refuges lack the accessibility and facilities found in national parks. They’re much more “wild” than parks. Refuges have fewer trails and overlooks, and fewer visitors, which is why I like them so much. Plus, I love photographing animals and birds and trekking through a refuge in search of its wildlife. My favorite refuge, hands down, is Cape Romain, which includes Bulls Island. On average, I visit it four times a year, even though I live seven hours away round-trip. Its hold upon me is persistent and strong. It’s also a refuge that’s very accessible to people, thanks to Coastal Expeditions, a group of naturalists and guides devoted to sharing the ecosystem with outdoor enthusiasts. This refuge features some of the cleanest water in the world with incredibly diverse bird, animal, plant and sea life, all protected as a Class 1 Wilderness Area. And visiting this amazing place just takes a little planning along with cooperative weather.

Boneyard Beach

While I like to explore the interior of the island, the majority of Bulls Island visitors walk straight to Boneyard Beach, an incredible area where two ecosystem’s tug and 12 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2021

pull at each other – the island’s maritime forest and ocean coast – leaving behind a remarkable display of shoreline trees. Their eerie beauty will capture the imagination of every photographer and person with a phone.

Coastal Expeditions trips

Coastal Expeditions partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to create access to Cape Romain. I’ve taken several different trips offered by Coastal Expeditions, but I’m a frequent patron of the Bulls Island Ferry, captained by naturalists and other environmental specialists who are engaging and fun. My knowledge of the outdoors hovers around slightly above average, but the Coastal Expedition staff are experts. I truly enjoy learning from them, plus they’ve helped me identify unique birds and other wildlife in my photos.

Birds, gators and more

I can’t list every bird and critter I’ve seen during my visits to Cape Romain, but here’s a sampling: bobcats, otters,

Wildlife You won’t be at a loss for beautiful images to photograph at the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge.

raccoons, fox squirrels, deer, roseate spoonbills, bald eagles, osprey, peregrine falcons, dolphins, American oystercatchers, black-necked stilts, sting rays, starfish, white pelicans, black skimmers, threatened wood storks and a variety of butterflies from a colorful painter’s palette, including zebra longwings and monarchs. I’ve also seen a great diversity of herons, egrets, ducks and shorebirds. During each trip, I’m treated to some new oddity, such as a large gull attempting to devour a sea star. By the way, he was successful.

The island’s alligators draw a lot of visitors. Approximately 1,000 alligators live in the island’s interior ponds and the Coastal Expeditions staff provide advice for safe viewing.

Pick your time of year

I’ve hiked Bulls Island during each of its seasons. The island wildlife changes every month, as birds come and go. I always take bug spray – I’m not one to chance – along with plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks and, of course, my camera. I visit

more often in spring and fall when the temperatures are moderate. Most people walk the island’s roads and trails and the few who try to bicycle there often find the sandy paths difficult to traverse, even with wide tires. In addition, bikes are not allowed on the beach. I’ve explored refuges in Montana, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Texas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia and quite a few in the Carolinas. I’ll never visit all 567 national wildlife refuges, because Cape Romain keeps beckoning me back.

Exploring the roots of Yvie Klancko’s egg collection

The Klancko collection features more than 1,000 eggs.

M

ention the holiday Easter, and the image of brightly colored eggs comes to mind. But for Davidson resident Yvonne “Yvie” Klancko, such eggs have a much deeper meaning, one that has led her to spend more than 50 years collecting 1,000 plus decorative eggs and learning the art of Paschal egg making. For 2021, Eastern Orthodox Christian Easter (Pascha) is celebrated on Sunday, May 2. Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Christian churches in such countries as Russia, Bulgaria, Greece, Lebanon, Palestine, Egypt and Romania to name just a few, base their Easter date on the Julian calendar. Up to the end of World War 1, many of these areas still used the Julian Calendar for both secular and religious purposes. The Paschal Feast day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion on Orthodox Christian Great and Holy Friday.

Paschal egg making

After marrying husband Robert in 1970, Yvie, who was already an accomplished artist, began learning the Galician Rus (Lemko) tears of the virgin technique of Paschal egg making from her mother-inlaw, Ustina Karliak Klancko. Yvie is Syriac Orthodox Christian on her father’s side, with roots in a small town that is now in southeastern Turkey. Her mother’s side of the family hails from Lebanon. In 16 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2021

the Middle East the use of ostrich eggs in the churches was common. Robert has roots in Galicia, a former province of Austria-Hungary that was divided between Ukraine and Poland after WWI (his family ended up in the Poland side, in an area known as Lemkovischina). The Slavic and Balkan peoples were known for the use of quail, chicken, and goose eggs for their Paschal art. The melding of the rich histories and traditions of Yvie and Robert’s ancestry led the two to spend a lifetime studying, researching and collecting Eastern Christian Church materials and art throughout their marriage. Both share a great love for their Christian faith and focus on early and Eastern Christian Church histories, customs, and immigration/assimilation here in the United States. The collection has been created and assembled by carefully selecting examples found in gift shops, antique shops, church fairs, importers, directly from the artists, Goodwill Stores, tag/garage sales and from gifts from friends.

A far-reaching collection The eggs in the collection have come from Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Greece, Romania, Hungary, the United States, and from the Mount of Olives in the Holy Land, to name just a few. They cover a time period of 150 years. Some of her most favorite ones are special eggs created by the Russian Orthodox Nuns who reside on the Mount of Olives in

An accomplished artist in her own right, Yvie Klancko learned the art of Paschal egg making from her mother-in-law.

Jerusalem. They are dipped 40 times in pure white wax then have bead work placed in the wax and are to be hung in front of icons by a special ribbon. Before becoming an engineer, Robert was tutored by two archpriests for the Russian Orthodox priesthood. However, he chose engineering on the advice of his mentor Igor Sikorsky. Yvie was a Reading Consultant and Director of Adult Education for the Amity Regional School System in Connecticut until she retired in 2014. Both Robert and Yvie are members of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Since the beginning of recorded history, the egg has epitomized life.

Prominent displays

The Knights of Columbus Museum in New Haven, Conn. featured 467 eggs from Yvie’s comprehensive egg collection over a six-month period in 2006. Experts chose the most relevant, unique and spiritually artistic pieces.

The selected eggs varied in size from less than in inch in height to 18 inches and were made of mixed media: paper-mâché, wood, porcelain, enameled metal, plastic, glass, minerals, and egg shells. The egg shells ranged from quail eggs, to chicken eggs, to goose eggs and even emu and ostrich eggs. From February to June 2009, Southern Connecticut State University featured an exhibition from Yvie’s collection in “Icons, Crosses & Eggs,” which included examples of the varied and rich art forms found in her extensive collection. The collection that the Klanckos have amassed over the years represent their curiosity about, and their pride in their rich heritage. When the two moved to Davidson from Connecticut three years ago to be closer to their grandchildren, transporting the delicate egg collection proved to be a monumental task, taking more than three months. The majority of the eggs are tucked away in a secure climate-controlled storage facility.

Inspiring Inventor Davidson scientist with ALS could change the future for those who have difficulty breathing BY » Karel Bond Lucander

W

hile Roger Faulkner tests the prototype for a special ventilator he invented, the Conformal Vest Ventilator (CVV), he also battles ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), a disease he was diagnosed with in August 2015. Since then, the 66-year-old Davidson scientist, who has been the mastermind behind countless inventions, has been living with the progressively neurodegenerative challenges of ALS. He is now on a ventilator 24/7. “One of the first things someone notices is how I’m breathing out of a tube,” he says. “I would like it that people wouldn’t immediately go to pity when they see me breathing through a tube.” And his Conformal Vest Ventilator (CVV) would change that—not only for Faulkner but for thousands of others who are suffering from ALS or have difficulty breathing. His revolutionary ventilator is portable and would allow people with paralysis of the diaphragm or with 18 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2021

Multiple Sclerosis, Cystic Fibrosis, spinal cord injuries, asthma and COPD to enjoy more normal conversations and eating. It would also help prevent the risk of respiratory infection. CVV is a form-fitting, discreet and energy efficient ventilator, enabling more mobility. This is not the case with other ventilators now available, including the Iron Lung or Hayek Medical’s Biphasic Cuirass Ventilator. Faulkner conceived of the CVV in 2017 and worked to develop it with his brother, Rob, a retired Emergency Room physician. He also works with a team of neuroscientists, university academics and other medical experts through his company, Rethink Respironics (a division of Rethink Technologies). “I started working on the Conformal Vest Ventilator seriously in 2019 and have done a lot since then,” he says. He has applied for an international patent and submitted preliminary data to the FDA. Currently in the approval process, “it will probably be two years before it can be on the market,” he adds. Yet that timeline

could accelerate with additional funding. “If you too feel that there is something you want to do to improve the world, don’t let impediments and obstacles stop you from trying,” he says, in a recent YouTube TEDxCharlotte Talk: “The Power of Invention: Roger Faulkner.”

Help Accelerate His Invention Roger Faulkner is fundraising to bring the Conformal Vest Ventilator (CVV) to the masses more quickly through his Help Roger Fight ALS GoFundMe and Fundable campaign (fundable. com/conformal-vest-ventilator). He would also like to partner with a corporate attorney. Visit Faulkner on his Twitch channel, “LivingInAWheelchair,” where he documents his life with ALS and shares his ideas.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month Spending a few minutes checking your skin could save your life BY » Naomi Simon, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist

T

he skin is an amazing organ that gives us insight into many things about our health. We may feel it’s dry and itchy or if it shows signs of aging, but there may be other not-so-obvious clues we can learn that signal attention. As dermatologists, detecting and treating skin cancer is a central point of our practice. While we encourage patients to schedule a skin exam with a dermatologist, patients play a vital role in protecting their health throughout the year by checking their skin top to bottom every few months. On average, a person’s risk for melanoma doubles if they have had more than five sunburns, but just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence nearly doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life. It is important to note that people of all colors, including brown and black skin, can get skin cancer. Even if you never sunburn, you can still get skin cancer. The good news is that all skin cancers are visible, and when caught early, are highly treatable. “Knowing” your skin is critical to identify changes. Use a mirror to look at your back and check your hands, feet, and even areas covered by your swimsuit. The American Academy of Dermatology website, AAD. org, has excellent information and

videos about doing a “self-check” and recognizing changes on your skin. If you have a history of sun exposure, tanning bed use, sunburns as a child (or adult), a history of previous skin cancers, numerous moles, or a family history of melanoma, it is critical to check your skin regularly at home for any new or changing skin growths. You should see a dermatologist if you have any new moles over age 40, any moles that are changing shape, size, color, border, symmetry, or itching or bleeding, or any new growths that scab, bleed, or “never seem to heal.” Don’t wait to see a dermatologist. If a suspicious mole or skin changes are present, dermatologists want to evaluate and diagnose those areas as soon as possible. Dermatologists can recognize, remove, and biopsy areas as necessary, and they can also recommend the best ways to prevent further sun damage. Your dermatologist may recommend that you get regular skin cancer screenings if you are at high risk for developing skin cancer. At your appointment, be sure to ask questions and have an honest discussion about your skincare. Regardless of your “skin history,” commit now to protect yourself. UV exposure is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers. Some simple things you can do include: · Apply sunscreen (SPF of 30 or higher)

30 minutes before going outdoors. · Limit exposed skin by wearing widebrimmed hats, long sleeves, and pants. · Avoid peak sun exposure from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. · Wear sunglasses that block UV rays. · Seek shade whenever possible. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States and the American Cancer Society predicts that 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer over their lifetime. More than 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the US: including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma. Nearly 20 Americans die from melanoma every day. Learn to protect yourself, practice “safe sun,” check your skin regularly, and establish a relationship with your dermatologist! The good news is when caught early, skin cancer is highly treatable! Mooresville Dermatology Center is committed to the education detection and treatment of skin cancers and has detected and treated over 7,500 skin cancers in the Lake Norman region in just four years. Remembering Those Missing Socks Among Other Things . . . BY » Mickey Dunaway

After more than a year of misery, it seemed May was just the right time for a little fun mingled with a bit of seriousness. I combined both just as they hit my fancy and found them on National Day Calendar (https://nationaldaycalendar.com/2021-national-day-holidays/). the words—“There once was May 1st-National May 25tha man from Nantucket”—the Homebrew Day National Missing Limerick deserves a day! My son recently lost an entire batch as he was readying to fill the bottles. It was so sad to see a grown man cry.

May 4th-National Star Wars Day

May 20th-National Rescue Dog Day

Probably my favorite. “May the 4th be with you” will be repeated millions of times on this day.

May 7th-National Packaging Design Day Seems pretty obvious that someone from Amazon must have suggested this one.

May 9th-National Lost Sock Memorial Day No. I have not forgotten Mother’s Day. However, should we not have a national day to mourn all the lost socks that are swirling around the Bermuda Triangles in our homes?

May 11th-National Twilight Zone Day

“The Twilight Zone” gets only one day? Come on! We just completed an entire year quarantined in the Twilight Zone.

May 12th-National Limerick Day When a poem can begin with

20 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2021

How could I not include a day dedicated to rescuing canines? Want to meet an angel on earth? Adopt a dog—puppy or old dog—and be prepared for the joy of a companion who gives love unreservedly. As a recent adopter of an older dog (a nine-year-old Brittany), I strongly commend this option to you. Their time with you may be less, but their big love quickly makes up for it.

May 21st-National Memo Day

Whoever suggested giving the dreaded and usually useless memo its own day should be fired forthwith and with a memo!

May 24th-National Brother’s Day

I have had a brother in my life for 74+ years. Since he was four years older, we fought often growing up, but we also hunted and fished, and now in retirement, we mostly tell tall tales to each other several times each week.

Children’s Day

I have this feeling that the Almighty, whether it is as a Him or Her or It, will judge us as a species on how we have treated children. However you perceive prayer, this day is a good day to pray for our world’s missing children.

May 26th-National Paper Airplane Day

I hope you have had the joy of making a paper airplane and watching it fly on breezes of a summer afternoon. I also hope you have not had the experience of sitting outside the principal’s office for flying one across the room with a message to your girlfriend.

May 28th-National Beef Burger Day

Don’t serve me one of those Impossible Burgers. I want a Jimmy Buffett “Cheeseburger in Paradise” burger.

May 30th-National Creativity Day

I really love this idea. Everyone I know is creative in some way. It really is fitting to celebrate your own personal National Creativity Day. If we all spent more time creating and less time griping, the world (and Lake Norman) would be a better place.

May 31st-National Smile Day

I hope the examples I chose made you reflect a little and, at least as importantly, made you smile!

hen it comes to financial planning services, too often apples are being compared to oranges, when a golden egg is desired. It’s not just about someone who is a specialist; it is also someone who is going to be a true advisor partner. How do you hire the best advisor partner? It depends on you. It is important to match personality styles, experience levels, and ability to communicate and motivate you. This should be viewed as a long-term relationship. The definition of financial planning has been and still is about the management and protection of income, expenses, assets, and investments to achieve your life’s goals and objectives. The most critical aspect of all of this is “What are YOUR life’s goals and objectives?” That makes the important first question to ask, “Do you believe in the purpose of financial planning?” The second question, “Do I best accomplish my goals through self-management or outside expertise?” I believe it is essential to identify your Financial DNA, basically your natural tendencies and background—your financial mindset. You can Dream it. A

specialist can help you best Plan it so you can be free to Pursue it (your life dreams and goals). To be clear, if you believe you are the best person to manage your financial future, then you should. If, either lack of passion for numbers or planning is not you, hiring expertise can be beneficial and prudent. — Karp Financial Content in this material is for general information only and not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual. Will Your Taxes Be Lower in the Future? If you actually are in, or expect to be in, a lower tax bracket during retirement compared to when you’re working, tax-qualified (401k’s, IRAs, etc.) can be a good source of savings for you. Conventional wisdom suggests that your income will decline in retirement. What you may not realize is that for many, taxable income doesn’t actually decrease. Why? Some lose valuable tax deductions and credits as they age, and, as a result, end up with a higher taxable income in retirement. Others work longer

than they expect, and some have more taxable investment income than they planned for. Future retirees are also facing a whole new set of variables that could impact both income tax rates and their level of income in retirement. Consider the following: • Political proposals that could drastically change our tax landscape • Fewer people paying into the labor force that ultimately contribute to social security and other programs like Medicare • Likelihood of increased Medicare and healthcare costs in the future • Increasing government debt levels These are just a few things that retirees should pay close attention to but being proactive with your tax strategy and looking beyond the rate of return your earning in the markets over the past decade is a vital piece of the retirement planning puzzle that could ultimately impact the success or failure in your plan. — Two Waters Wealth Management

in my GLASS Lush foliage can be found in Costa Rica wherever you turn.

An Unwinding The Nayara Gardens resort in Costa Rica roasts its own coffee beans.

C

osta Rica has been on our bucket list for years. When an opportunity to visit popped up we jumped right at it. First, some context. A while back we were in the middle of a fair amount of intensity. De-stressing was definitely required. Friends who’d come back from Costa Rica raved about their “adventure.” “Adventure” was not our goal. Unwinding was definitely our order of the day. So, we headed for the Nayara Gardens resort in Costa Rica’s Arenal rainforest. Nayara is located next to the dormant Arenal volcano. That’s good to know because we never saw it. We were there during the rainy season, the volcano was permanently enshrouded by low clouds. Rain is great for foliage. Whenever you turn around you’re confronted by a beautiful, thick, green wall. While there’s lots of foliage, there are not a lot of people. Tourism peaks 26 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2021

in the dry season. So, this was great for us and for unwinding—lush scenery and just a few people. Driving to the resort took some time. We got a real good feel for the country. There were some stops along the way. One was for purchasing soccer shirts to add to my wife’s extensive selection. A Costa Rica national shirt was added. I couldn’t resist a shirt of a local team whose sponsor, Bimbo, was emblazoned on the front. My “Bimbo shirt” elicits numerous comments. I wear it proudly! Getting closer to the resort, the roads got curvier and more mountainous. A delicious sense of irony crept in—winding roads to a few days of unwinding. Unwind we did. After a pleasant conversation at check-in, a golf cart got us to our room. “Room” is not the right word. Step inside and you definitely know you’re onto something. Our bungalow had a huge deck wrapped around one side. It had easy chairs, a dining table and

chairs, a jacuzzi (yes we did) and a hammock (yes we did). On the other side there’s a large outdoor shower (yes we did). And there’s the high, very high, much vaunted, vaulted ceiling. What really tied it all together was that thick, green wall of foliage which ensured complete privacy. Then we headed to the Nostalgia Wine & Tapas Bar. The culinary portion of unwinding began. We met up with the resort’s sommelier, Lucia. It turns out that she is finalizing her studies for a Master Sommelier Diploma; that’s heavy duty. This was the beginning of a love fest which we celebrated with a really nice wine from the Valle de Cachapoal region of Chile. Then the fun got better. In walked the resort manager and his food and beverage manager to welcome us. They invited us to a private coffee tasting the next day; more of that, later. The food and beverage manager called Nayara’s fine dining restaurant to set aside

a bottle of wine that was not on the wine list. Nice. Next morning, at breakfast, we measured the effectiveness of our unwinding strategy. The restaurant has a dramatic overlook of the Arenal volcano—in our case, a dramatic overlook of clouds shrouding the volcano. Our measure was a simple question—“what’s the best part of the trip, so far?” The answer was, “just looking at the foliage.” We were well on our way! Now to our coffee experience. Nayara roasts its own coffee beans in Mi Cafecito, a short golf-cart ride from breakfast. This wasn’t just sharing a cup or two of coffee. This was a coffee tasting and seminar. We were told about soil conditions and bean processing that comes through in the coffee. We tasted different coffees at different levels of strength and acidity. It was almost like we were talking about grapes and wine. At the main restaurant the food and presentation was, predictably, excellent. But the star of the evening was that special wine. It was a Cabernet Franc from a single vineyard in the Mendoza region of Argentina. Our server was kind enough to decanter it for us. After a toast and a first sip our table became very quiet—I love it when that happens. This was a wine to savor. We learned later that the wine is kept aside for special guests. We felt very honored and very unwound. A spectacular way to spend the last evening of our stay at this amazing place. Objective met; unwind we did. The whole experience was special. I’m still on the hunt for another bottle of that wine.

True Wealth – The Adventure Years

I

love this month’s Limitless theme of Coastal Adventures because of the word adventure. By definition, adventure is “an exciting or remarkable experience.” Any activity that is new to us can be an adventure. It is a measure of true wealth – an accumulation of experiences we have and the people we meet along life’s journey. Imagine yourself wandering through a bookstore full of old books, and your eye catches a section of old diaries. How can you resist these leather-bound chronologies of someone’s past life experiences? The first diary shares a person’s transition from the structured days of working life to the freedom and flexibility of retirement. They include hopes and dreams of things to be done, experiences to be had, yet as you read through the years of entries, very little was ever accomplished. In the second diary, you find a stark difference. The first entry says, “I retired, wonder what is next.” No dreams to start and a myriad of random experiences along the way. No entries of “I always wanted to” that goes with achieving a personal goal. No enjoyment expressed. The third diary also started with thoughts on the person’s transition, and then had a list of specific experiences, places they hoped to see, and hobbies or skills they hoped to try. Journaled were cost planning and timing of activities. Future entries included stories of adventures and experiences pursued and enjoyed. Financial planning is more than numbers on a page. It also should be inspired by the security you want feel in your day-to-day living along with the true wealth you want to pursue – coastal adventures, mountain adventures, European/USA travel adventures or new hobbies. What will it cost and when might it happen? While it can’t happen all at once, planning can make it more tangible and intentional. Life shouldn’t be left unfulfilled like the first diary

or left to chance like the second diary. What will your retirement diary depict? Will it be a page turner that is both gratifying and satisfying? Will you dream, plan, and pursue your adventure years … your true wealth?
