Everything in Its Place I consider myself a fairly organized person. I pretty much know where everything is in my house. It might not be labeled and alphabetized, but if you ask me for it, I can find it. I’ve tried the whole “throw out what you’re not using” thing and the “put the stuff you use the most where it is the most convenient trick” but it seems to only stay in that spot for a few days before it winds up somewhere else. I guess I could blame my husband for failing to put things back in their place, but the truth is that he is way more organized than I am. He always puts things right back where he found them. I’d say my grandson is the culprit, but apparently, he takes after his “AwPaw” and is a stickler for putting things in their place even at 3 years old! So, I guess that

leaves me to blame. I’ve spent a lot of money on storage containers over the years. Some stack, some roll, some have really cool compartments. Some are decorative, some are sturdy, but all are purchased with the best of intentions to put everything in its own special place and keep my closets and cabinets clutterfree! That usually lasts a few weeks and then I’m back to throwing stuff wherever it lands and vowing to put it in its proper place when I have time. In this issue of

LIMITLESS, you’ll find the latest trends in organizing your home. From storage benches designed to fit your individual needs, to cute baskets and boxes that fit your décor while hiding a multitude of stuff. So, I guess the “Dog Days of Summer” are a great time for me to go back through my junk drawers and closets and begin to re-organize. I bet I find a few things I’ve been seeking for awhile now. And when I do, I’m going to put them where they belong and see just how long they stay there. Any wagers on how long? Happy Organizing everyone!

OVID-19 created an unusual time and unusual actions. When the global pandemic officially began and we were locked down for what we expected to be a few months, many of us reached inside our gut and told ourselves we would get through this time with a positive attitude and would do all those things we never had time for before. Were you one of those? Did you start a trivet with all the wine corks you tossed into that large bowl in your cupboard? Did you dutifully log your

daily exercise to submit to the contest you and your friends created? Did you learn the intricacies of Zoom by realizing that your co-workers were looking at your nasal hair or your messy desk instead of your face? Did you dig into those dusty boxes, determined to purge, cleanse, and organize? Were you one of those unfortunate folks who contracted Covid and had to quarantine away from your family? But when those few months morphed into an unknown time warp, our resilient spirit began to wane. We discovered that homecooked meals had lost

Creativity in the Time of Covid their appeal, that curbside pickup was no longer a treat, that waiting for a turn to speak on Zoom became a reminder of how much we missed spontaneous, disorganized conversation. So, once again, we had to go further, to reach beyond the familiar and stretch for the unknown. The irony of discovering our inner spirit during difficult moments is nothing new, nor is it a phenomenon to be dismissed as ordinary. Three residents of our community turned the ordinary, monotonous dreariness of COVID-19 isolation into extraordinary personal pursuits.

In our grief we often find peace.

Lily Westendorff ’s husband, Bernie, died during the early months of the isolation at the age of eighty-three. Bernie was larger than life, a German whose family had been impoverished by the war when his architect dad refused to join the Nazi party. He arrived in the United States in 1960 with 38 cents in his pocket and began a creative journey that resulted in the design of a revolutionary knitting machine that guaranteed him a successful career in the textile industry. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, Lily and her children were not able to celebrate the joy of Bernie’s life with his friends here nor with his family in Germany. Lily searched for a way to move forward. In her words, she returned to the “therapy of art.” Years ago, she participated in a few art workshops at a local community college but had not pursued painting because she and Bernie were always busy with life as it were. Most of her limited art in those days reflected their mutual interests. Now, within the long days and nights of isolation at her condo on Lake Norman, she refreshed her watercolors and began to paint anew, art that is uniquely hers. Her new creations are reflections of her interests and of scenes that give her solace. There are winter landscapes of snowy days in Boone, memories of German scenes, the apple green of spring on budding trees. Many of her paintings are post card size, an intentional choice because she often gifts them to friends or sends them to family in Germany.

There once was a teacher named Pat, Who knew a lot about this and that… Pat Watson, a former educator at Davidson IB Middle School, also returned to an earlier creation and gave it a new life. In one of those dusty boxes that often live in classroom closets and then eventually move into a retired teacher’s home, she found her alphabet limericks. She wrote the limericks in the early 80’s while teaching poetry to high school students. With a new eye, she edited and tweaked. She convinced her artist brother, Lee, to illustrate the limericks. Adventurous as his sister, Lee taught himself how to design the characters by hand on the digital board with the program, Wacom

Lily Westendorff found therapy in painting after the death of her husband Bernie in the early months of the pandemic.

Intuos. Their collaboration produced “Welcome to Shady Lane Zoo: Lovable Limericks from A to Z,” self-published in 2020. The limericks and the illustrations, like Pat and Lee, are delightful and full of surprises. Don’t expect an alphabetical litany of farm animals nor rhymes like cat and hat and bat. No, the rhymes may appear nonsensical but make perfect sense: a hippopotamus who eats quite a lotamus and now is notamus, Mel the Mosquito who would bite everybody she’d meeto, and a fox who lives at Fort Knox. Even the animals she chose are serendipitous: a unicorn who has no horn, a vole who plays the viola, and a newt who plays the flute.

Lance Armstrong is alive and well and still stoning his friends.

Lance Armstrong is a local entrepreneur who has lived on Lake Norman all his life but has traveled to many parts of the world. When he became ill with COVID-19 in June 2020, his busy life came to a halt. He spent early days of the pandemic as a “master mulcher,” spreading mulch in every nook and corner of his lakeside home. Now quarantined to the bedroom in his home, he had

no idea how he was going to spend the long days. His daughter, Ava, gave him a small rock and an old fishing tackle box of paints that were probably as old as the box. And thus, his stoning began. Unlike Lily and Pat, Lance was unaware of his artistic bent. “I only painted houses.” Now this A+ personality looked at rocks differently; they became canvases for his boredom. His first stone was inspired by a meme figure in a HAZMAT suit holding a vial of Corona virus. The more stones he painted, the more his creativity grew and so did the size of his art supplies. Once out of his quarantine, he began to take long walks and picked up rocks along the way. His paintings are now his own creations, inspired by friendships, or shared moments with friends. There are realistic animals the size of a half dollar or a hot dog the size of a finger or a box turtle replete with ornate ridges and a smile on its face. For an 85-yearold fisherman friend he reproduced a photo of a fishing scene. Armstrong has kept a detailed log of each stone, why he created it, to whom he gave it, and where he got the inspiration. As we read their stories, may we all be reminded of how a creative spirit can be discovered, or rediscovered, and shared during challenging times. LimitlessMagOnline.com | August 2021 11

A Peaceful

Ride

Davidson resident’s passion for biking is legendary BY » Jean Spangler

T

he Davidson area has quite a few people who draw curiosity. One, in particular, is Sara Fox. Maybe you’ve seen her slowly riding her bike down Davidson-Concord Road in what looks like a zone of enviable serenity. Many area residents have asked “who is this suntanned, mature woman riding her bike down this stretch of road every day?” Well, it took some digging and a notice on Nextdoor to track her down to ask her about her dedicated bike habit. People throughout the area were concerned during COVID when they didn’t see Sara riding her bike, so this story should not only put her well-being to rest, but to give insight into the kind of person who thinks it’s nothing at age 74 to bike 20 miles a week, seven days a week.

That first ride

A native of Charlotte, Sara grew up loving her bicycle. She remembers her father taking the training wheels off her bike and “taking off ” and feeling a sense of freedom she felt with the wind on her face. Throughout elementary, junior high and high school she loved all the feelings that are familiar to regular bike riders. Sara says she’s always loved sports and has been outgoing throughout her life. A graduate of Myers Park High School and UNC-Greensboro, she says she was voted “Most Popular” in high school and was a cheerleader. After graduating 14 LimitlessMagOnline.com | August 2021

from college, she worked in several secretarial and administrative jobs. “I’ve always been energetic and a go-getter,” says Sara. “And to some extent I still am.”

A break from the roads

She has suspended her daily bike riding down Davidson-Concord Road because of her husband Wesley’s concerns about traffic. Since Sara has paused her bike rides, she’s become an even more active participant in yoga, a practice she performs several days a week. She also has a stationary bike in her home and gets in her bike rides without leaving home. Sara says she has also loved swimming as a sport. “But biking,” she adds, “has also kept me in shape.” Sara also attributes being in shape to eating right, meditation and prayer. “I think it helps you mentally and physically to have a heart of gratitude,” says Sara. “I also love plants and spend a lot of my time gardening. I’m simply an outdoor person so that’s in part responsible for my tan skin.” Sara always preferred riding her bike because it gave her a sense of peace. Residents of Bailey Springs, Sara and Wesley, lived on the lake for 38 years before moving to Davidson. Her route, until her husband convinced her a few months ago that the traffic in the area posed too great a danger to his wife, was from her home to the Davidson Library and back.

The life of a cyclist

Sara says like anyone who bikes, she’s had her share of injuries, but gratefully, nothing serious. “I was on the greenway when I had to brake suddenly and fell off my bike,” she explains. “I was able to ride home where Wesley took me to the hospital for 13 stitches in my left leg. I’m just lucky I’ve had no broken bones or other serious injuries.” Sara laughs when asked if people stop her to ask questions or yell to her when she’s on her bike. “Oh, I’ve gotten a lot of people yell from their cars “keep going!” Although Sara has suspended her bike riding for now, she has not given up on biking in the future. “There just isn’t anything like the peace I get when I ride my bike,” says Sara. “I will keep moving with yoga, gardening and other activities because it makes me feel good and I think it’s the secret to a long and happy life.”

CONDO INSURANCE

Homeowners Associations have increased the deductibles on their master policies in recent years in order to keep premiums low. While this saves you money in the short term, it can mean a big expense if there is an insurance claim. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU: In the event of a claim with a large deductible the HOA will send out an assessment to all condo owners for their portion of the claim. We have seen deductibles as high as $25,000 this past year. DOES MY CONDO POLICY COVER THIS? Most insurance policies automatically come with some coverage for this under “loss assessment”. The automatic coverage is minimal, only $1k or $5k which would not be enough if there is a large deductible. Of course, you can increase this limit in increments up to $50k with most insurance companies. WHAT SHOULD I DO? Contact your HOA to obtain a copy of your master policy to see what your current deductible is. Then review your insurance policy to make sure its limit is sufficient. It might also be a good time to request a copy of your by-laws to make sure there are no gaps between the master HOA policy and the condo owner’s policies.

The Paris of South America Steak, wine & special treatment in Buenos Aires

W

BY » Trevor Burton | PHOTOGRAPHY BY » Trevor Burton

e spend as much time as we can in Buenos Aires. Not much touristy stuff, just hanging out and soaking up the city’s culture. Part of our soaking is a favorite restaurant, Fervor, in the Recoleta district of the city. Buenos Aires is full of old, touristy steakhouses that fill every guidebook. Fervor is not one of them. Located on a small side-street, it has a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. Buenos Aires has the nickname, “the Paris of South America.” Sitting at a table in Fervor with few, if any, tourists in sight, closing your ears to conversations, you would swear you were in the City of Light— and that’s very okay with us. Fervor’s approach is simple, feature the finest steaks along with ultra-fresh, 20 LimitlessMagOnline.com | August 2021

south Atlantic seafood and cook them in classic Argentinean style over a smoldering fire of embers. Simple; great ingredients, exquisite preparation, cozy, family atmosphere—right up our alley. Our approach is also simple. We go with a dish of campo y mar, the restaurant’s description of itself, surf and turf to us. Add to that a special preparation of potatoes and you’re on to something. Perfection on a plate. As for wine, we always have a great time perusing Fervor’s wine list. With absolutely no data to back my opinion, a wine tastes better the closer it is to home. So we stay with Argentinian wine. The last time we were there, we went for a Malbec from Catena Zapata’s Nicasia vineyard in the Uco Valley sub-region of Mendoza. Maybe a little strong for the “surf ”part of our dish but right on for the “turf ” part.

Treated as “regulars”

We’ve become buddies with Fervor’s owner, we’re truly treated as “regulars.” And that brings me to a fun tale. Fervor’s dinner service begins at 7:30. One time we arrived a little early and joined the porteños (residents of Buenos Aires) waiting in the lobby area. Right away, up came the owner with two glasses of champagne and, ahead of the crowd, he led us to “our table.” We got a kick out of locals seeing us get special treatment. My command of Spanish is close to zero but I’m pretty sure that I heard porteño whisperings that we were probably George and Amal Clooney—at least, I like to think I did. One time we did drop into some touristy stuff. After about an hour’s drive out of the city, you’re way

into the countryside. We were on a mission to visit one of Buenos Aires’ estancias—a horse ranch. Something I highly recommend. This was a gorgeous place. We toured the old family home and private chapel and then got down to business. We stopped by the barbecue pit where there was a massive amount of chicken, sausage and beef being slowly cooked. The meats were being cooked in that traditional Argentinian way, over embers. Just watching the process developed, in us, a huge appetite. But there was still some time to go before lunch, so we jumped onto a horsedrawn carriage to explore the ranch.

A tango to remember

Then came lunch. Served by gauchos (more on them to follow), we were treated to plates of food that made us happy that the tables were sturdy—in

fact, our table did groan. The main dish, of course, was a huge piece of Argentinian steak. And, naturally, there was a bottle of Malbec on the table. We got to digest all of this watching a tango presentation and Trevor Burton and wife Mary Ellen are treated like family at Fervor in Buenos Aires. an exhibition and then watched, jaws dropping, of traditional gaucho dancing. All a little breathtaking as they displayed high speed and accuracy riding skills. Truly awesome. but perfect for the digestion. I can’t wait for all this COVID-19 Back to the gauchos. Dancing and chaos to simmer down. Buenos digestion finished, we sauntered out Aires has a huge pull on us. I want to the ranch to watch our gauchos in to go Fervor and hang out with action. The guys who served us lunch my wife. I want to peruse the wine were pretty good on horseback— list and then dig into some of that amazingly good. We watched them perfection on a plate. Soon! herding horses into several groups

hh. August. Dog Days. When I was growing up as a country boy in very rural southwest Alabama, I heard people mention the hot, hot dog days of August. There was no Google or Internet back in the mid-1950s. Heck, it took an hour to get to a library from my house. The Mobile Public Library’s Bookmobile came around a few times to show us country folks books from the extensive downtown library. I don’t know if the Bookmobiles carried encyclopedias, but I don’t think so. Therefore, in my eight-year-old mind, I learned basically by observation, especially in the summer. And in August, I saw our rabbit dogs lying around in their pen. So, obviously, Dog Days must mean that it is so hot in August that even dogs don’t move. Made sense to me! According to Wikipedia, Dog Days were the days … “which Hellenistic astrology connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs, and bad luck.” I like my eight-year-old definition better, and really, I wasn’t too far off. ost Worlds Brewing’s Goseck Black Lager is a German Schwarzbier-style, one of the oldest continually brewed beers in the country. This beer has light roasted and bready malt notes with a noble hop that brings out hints of toffee and chocolate. It’s smooth and malty and a perfect for someone is open to a surprise, as this is a beer that tastes very different than how it looks. “Goseck is for the beer drinker who appreciates trying new styles and enjoys a dark beer that drinks like a light lager,” says David Gonzalez, Director of Brewing at Lost Worlds. The beer is named after a Neolithic structure called the Goseck Circle in Saxony, Germany. It is the oldest known structure in Central Europe, dated back to 4700 BC

True Wealth– Inflation – A Breeze or a Gust?

F

or the past few months, there has been a lot of debate (and media coverage) on the issue of inflation and its impact on our economy going forward. By definition (at least according to Investopedia), inflation is the rate at which the value of a currency is falling and, consequently, the general level of prices for goods and services rising. The pundits professing good or bad consequences have a lively discussion sharing their point of view and defending it. From a financial planning perspective, the real answer to the debate should be, quite frankly, it depends. What I mean is that inflation affects financial assets differently, making it okay for some things and “not okay” for others. Add in the amount of inflation or inflation rate impact, and it creates a whirlwind of speculation. The reality is that generalization of inflation’s impact on your financial future may be best considered in a multi-faceted approach. Begin the process by asking yourself these three retirement planning questions: 1. Is my total income fixed in today’s dollars or does some or all have cost of living (inflation) consideration? 2. Are my remaining liabilities at a long term/ fixed rate, short term, or variable rate? 3. How might my investment portfolio react in a rising interest (inflationary) environment? In the liability bucket is your debt (borrowed money). If you have no credit card balances or other short term/

28 LimitlessMagOnline.com | August 2021

variable rate loans and/or, if you have either a long-term home mortgage or no home mortgage, rising rates probably will have minimal impact on your situation. In the asset bucket are your investments. Rising interest rates tend to help savings accounts and short-term bond investments, yet can hurt other existing long-term bond investments. Equity (stock) performance is generally reactive to the economy and consumer spending. With changing age demographics, technology, and attitudes, this is the hardest to predict, hence allocations to different sectors of the economy can make a difference. As the winds of inflation seem to be picking up, be sure the sails of your retirement boat are set correctly, as no one really knows if they will blow gently or become a gust. Being prepared helps you sail through whatever the future holds. Oliver Oliver is a pit bull terrier mix currently living with a foster family and has come a long way since he first arrived at a shelter. He is still a little uneasy meeting new people but if you are willing to work with him you are sure to become besties! He is house trained, crate trained, walks well on a leash, knows basic commands and will give you a shake for treats and before meals. He loves hanging out and playing with other dogs but it still unsure about cats. An ideal home for him would be a single-family home with a fenced-in backyard. The most important thing is to have someone who understands he is a special boy and needs continued work to make him the best pet possible. Adoption fee is $250.

Dixie Dixie, a Belgian malinois/shepherd was pulled from a rural shelter along with her three puppies. Her puppies have found their forever homes. She is a calm, sweet girl who craves love and attention. Being petted and snuggling are two of her favorite things. Need a walking buddy? Dixie enjoys her walks. A secure tall fence is best for her as she likes to chase squirrels. She would love to be your one and only but can get along with larger dogs with slow introductions. Her ideal home is a single family home with someone who is home most days and will work with her to show her what a loving home is all about. With patience and guidance Dixie will be a perfect companion. Dixie recently completed a training program. Her trainer will meet with her new family to ensure a smooth transition for her. Adoption fee is $250.

Rebel Rebel is a 4-month-old Labrador retriever mix. He is doing well with his house training and loves to snuggle. Playing and napping are his favorite pastimes and he gets along with other dogs and children. If you are ready for some puppy energy, then apply for him today. Adoption fee is $250.

Brett Brett, a mastiff mix, is approximately 2 years old and weighs in at 80 pounds. He is a lovable social energetic companion who is crate, house and leash trained. Brett has a submissive personality and is very eager to please his people. He loves having his face and chest rubbed and will reward you with a big smile. Older children would be best due to his energy level. He is heartworm positive but don’t let that deter you. It is treatable and the rescue covers all costs of treatment. Adoption fee is $250.

Colby Colby is a 1-year-old pit bull terrier mix who hopes his forever family has a spot on the couch for him. His favorite pastime is snuggling with his humans. Tennis balls are his favorite, even if he’s not the best at catching them! He has worked with a trainer who taught him some really fun tricks and commands and he hopes to show them off to his new family. He would be best in a home with other dogs but not children or cats. Adoption fee is $250.
