Staying Grounded I’ve always been very health conscious. I wouldn’t say I’m a health fanatic because I still eat (and drink) things that may not be all that healthy, but at least I’m conscious of it! Staying fit is a priority for me and I enjoy a brisk 3-mile walk daily combined with a little weight training and even some yoga breathing from time to time. I remember the days when I could pretty much eat anything I wanted because I knew I would burn it off through my daily workout routine. Needless to say, when I hit 50 all that began to change. I found out quickly that I had to work twice as hard and eat half of what I was used to, just to maintain my comfortable weight. Exercise safety became a grim reality when several years ago during my workout, I turned my ankle and tore several ligaments. It took a good six months for that injury to heal and has made me extremely

careful about making sure my feet stay planted and balanced wherever I am. No more jumping ditches, climbing hills and balancing on the curbs. I stick to flat land and hard ground now whenever possible. My husband (who used to climb ladders for a living) and I have become so careful not to take chances with our health anymore. It’s simply not worth it. We’re committed to staying healthy enough to play with our grandkids, dance to the music, and enjoy many more years of traveling and exploring new places. I call this age (almost 62) my Life of Prime and

Advertising Sales Executives I intend to enjoy every minute of it. That may mean learning to eat more broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts but I’m willing to make that small sacrifice if it means enjoying more time with my friends and family. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a nice basket of fries from time to time, though. I’ll just walk an extra couple of miles and work it off. Some sacrifices are just worth making! For this issue we’ve rounded up some health articles you’re sure to find interesting, from the benefits of biofeedback to one writer trying out a virtual doctor visit testing kit to some amazing stories from breast cancer survivors. So make yourself a delicious smoothie to sip on, sit back and enjoy!

helly Burns is a problem solver. After working in senior living communities and seeing the benefits of offering memory care and recreational activities to the residents, she realized there was a gap when it came to people 55 and older who live in a place that doesn’t have organized activities. “Sometimes residents decide they would rather stay at home or may not have the financial means to stay in an assisted living facility,” says Burns. “They go home after being involved and they don’t have that interaction anymore. There’s no other program for them to stay engaged with their friends.” With that realization, the Hearts4Home Senior Recreation Club was born.

On a mission Top: Hearts4Home members can take advantage of transportation to events and activities. Bottom: Burns recently delivered singing telegrams to cheer up area community members.

12 LimitlessMagOnline.com | October 2020

Burns has always felt a calling to help others, which is evident in the volunteer work she’s done for the Alzheimer’s Association, Welcome Home Veterans at Richard’s Coffee Shop, the Humane Society and area homeless shelters. Her mission in creating Hearts4Home was to promote the overall mental health and well being of the senior community. The organization seeks to do this by offering exercise, cultural events and outings and arts and crafts activities that are therapeutic for both the mind and body.

Dine In • Catering • Carry Out Burns, a Mooresville resident, has spent 10 years working in the Senior Health and Wellness field. She started out as a Certified Nursing Assistant and later began working as the Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Coordinator at the Ranson Ridge Senior Living Community in Huntersville. She helped organize the community’s first Memory Care program and has since worked in several other senior living communities in the Lake Norman area. Burns is seeking to bridge the gap between the programs offered in senior living by providing a service that offers the same opportunities through a tiered membership structure available to residents in Mooresville and Davidson.

Customized experiences

serving as an enrichment director in various area communities gives her experience in planning a wide range of activities for the Hearts4Home Senior Recreation Club. Plans are in the works for specialized Hearts4Home events, such as an Italian food cooking demonstration this month, followed by a light lunch, a community cookoff, a health and wellness brunch, car show and more. Members can choose to pay month-to-month for their membership and cancel within at least 30 days notice. For anyone not wanting to commit to a VIP membership but still have access to some of the services, such as virtual classes, there’s a la carte pricing, too. The different tiers give options to anyone wanting to be involved, whether they are seeking more recreational activities or the occasional virtual class and monthly packet of activities they can do at home. There’s also a recreational bus available to VIP members needing transportation to events for a small fee. “We want to make sure members are safe but still have the opportunities to get out,” says Burns. In addition to the Senior Creation Club, Hearts4Home also offers home care giving services to anyone seeking those as well. These services include personal care, companionship, transitional care andMOORESVILLE respite.

Dine In • Catering • Carry Out

For a monthly fee of $150, VIP Club members will have access to day trips and special events such as musical concerts and theatrical performances, museum trips, comedy shows, shopping trips, train rides and more. They will also receive a monthly newsletter and curated activity packet featuring exercise challenges, brain games, laughter therapy, creative writing, health tips, recipes and more. Burns makes sure the five dimensions of wellness are incorporated into all of their activities in order to challenge members physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally and socially. arb Dole serves snacks to actors while they film movies or television shows in the Carolinas and Georgia. Because of this, she knows that Jamie Lee Curtis “is just awesome, and likes peanut butter and jelly on white bread”; Woody Harrelson wants his Voss water shaken for 20 minutes to bring the minerals to the top; and Sam Rockwell’s trailer is a renovated Greyhound bus painted with mermaids and octopuses. “Frances McDormand is the bomb and one of the most down-to-earth people you will ever meet,” she says. Dole worked with her during the Asheville area production of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” She’s also been on location for two “Halloween” movies, 14 LimitlessMagOnline.com | October 2020

“Banshee,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” “OBX,” “Tusk,” “The 24th” and “Magic Mike XXL,” to name a few. “When Channing Tatum and the guys were dancing in ‘Magic Mike XXL,’ some of the 900 women who were extras passed out,” she adds.

Chance encounter changes her life

“I got into the business nine years ago by chance,” says Dole, 58. “A friend from New York who worked in production came to visit. We went to visit her friend who was working on the set of “Banshee” in Mooresville. I had recently lost my partner of 20 years and was really depressed. Her friend asked me if I wanted to come work on the show for a few days, and I never looked back. I had found my joy.”

Barb Dole and business partner Keith Sweeney often move their food tent and truck to four different locations on an average day of filiming.

Craft Service = hydration station and light bites

She met Keith Sweeney on “Banshee” and partnered with him to start their own craft service, which translates to all bites and beverages for actors and crew in between their every six-hour meals. Their business is unionized, and they work in North and South Carolina and Savannah, Ga. They had one craft service truck, but when COVID-19 shut down production in March, they bought and upfitted two more. Each truck has “a fullsized stove, two refrigerators, sink and everything else you would find in your own kitchen,” she says. And if you think craft service means just mingling with famous people, think again. Dole and Sweeney often set up, break down and move their crafty tent and truck to four locations during 12- to 18-hour days. Filming can run for

months—regardless of the grueling weather. Walking 20,000 steps is a light day while rushing food nonstop to hungry actors.

Cameras are rolling again

For the past couple of years, when she’s between productions, including during the COVID-19 shutdown, Barb has worked at her friend’s French Market Café in Cornelius. But since September, she’s masked, gloved and back on location. First up is a Hallmark Christmas movie and then Oprah’s new television series “Delilah.” Although we won’t see her face on the big screen, Dole is hustling trays, ducking behind props, serving those A-listers—and loving every minute of it. “Crafty is the best job I’ve ever had,” she says. “I’ve always been a huge Hollywood fan, and though it’s physically demanding, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Hauntingly Good Craft Service! Barb Dole provided craft service on the set of two “Halloween” movies—the one released in 2018 and “Halloween Kills,” which will premiere in October 2021 due to COVID-19. “‘Halloween Kills’ is going to blow people away!” she says. “I was the known chicken on the set and always getting pranked.” LimitlessMagOnline.com | October 2020 15

Avoiding Doctor Visit Anxiety

One medical kit offers the option of a virtual visit

I

’m not a fan of doctor office waiting rooms. I hear coughs, see sick faces and visualize germs swirling freely. That apprehension is double now because of COVID-19. So, I was thrilled to read about TytoHome’s portable

medical exam kit. Coupled with a smartphone app, TytoHome allows doctors to perform a diagnostic exam remotely. Think of it as “house calls” for 2020. TytoHome is FDAapproved and allows a visual exam of the skin, temperature check and

examination of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, pulse, lungs and heart. Novant Health is affiliated with Tyto to provide virtual visits in North Carolina. Aram Alexanian, MD, a physician at Novant Health Primary Care Gilead Road in Huntersville and executive

for provider development, recently guided us through a demonstration exam.

Benefits of virtual visits

my ears and throat. My only struggle was positioning the camera to see inside the ear. Dr. Alexanian demonstrated the correct technique onscreen and it worked easily. Labs or x-rays can be scheduled the same day if needed.

of home, not missing work time, etc. What a benefit this would have been when we had young children with frequent fever, runny nose and sore throats. The visit began like any video call, with Dr. Alexanian on my screen

and me on his. He reviewed my record and discussed my health concerns. We then transitioned to the diagnostics phase where he guided me through exams of suspicious skin spots, listening to my heart and lungs, and examining

The virtual visit was a great experience. I feared an ear problem, but Dr. Alexanian did not see anything of concern. Visit results are recorded in my online medical record. When it was over, I strolled barefoot to the kitchen for another cup of coffee. Dr. Alexanian describes the in-home virtual visits as humbling, especially with patients he has known for some time. “It’s a privilege

being invited into their home and seeing pictures of their children or grandchildren. I now understand that patient more as a person,” Dr. Alexanian says. Prior to COVID-19, Novant Health recorded 2,000 total virtual visits (telephone, email, video and Tyto). In the last six months they have performed 500,000 virtual visits. What does the future hold? That partly depends on how Medicare and private insurance treat virtual visits in the future. Since COVID-19 virtual visits are covered the same as in-person visits. The kit retails for $299 and is available through Novant Health and Best Buy. At time of publication, Best Buy had it discounted to $249.

Benefits of BIOFEEDBACK Davidson clinic uses non-medical treatment options for enhanced well being BY » Elizabeth Watson Chaney

M

elanie Berry, founder of Carolinas Biofeedback Clinic, first became interested in the topic of biofeedback in a psychology course back in 1982. She later earned a

master’s in psychology, board certification in both biofeedback and neurofeedback, and additional certifications in a variety of mind-body techniques. Hoping to make biofeedback more accessible

18 LimitlessMagOnline.com | October 2020

to clients, she opened a clinic in Pineville in 2008, then added an additional office in Davidson, serving as clinical director in both locations. The clinic offers services in both biofeedback and neurofeedback. Berry says

people seek out biofeedback and neurofeedback for a variety of reasons, and they are often interconnected. In Berry’s practice, however, 85 percent come because of something anxiety-related. Second most common are cognitive concerns

such as memory, attention, or executive functioning— followed by depression and sleep disturbances. Many of her clients have also experienced trauma of some kind.

Calming the nervous system

“In essence,” Berry explains, “biofeedback involves teaching a person how to self-regulate, how to calm their own nervous system, and how to improve their own memory capacity by manipulating some real-time biological measure.” Options in skill-based biofeedback include thermal biofeedback (hand warming), respiration biofeedback, heart rate variability, galvanic skin response (sweating), muscle tension (electromyogram), and open focus synchrony (attention training). Each involves active learning and regular practice. Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback in which the learning is passive. Sensors are attached to the client’s scalp to detect activity in specific brain areas. A movie or other technology feeds audio-visual cues back to the person, rewarding the brain when it chooses healthy neural pathways. The learning is integrated during sleep over the next two days. Neurofeedback protocols are designed based on information gathered through a quantitative EEG, also known an advanced brain map. Berry uses a sophisticated brain map called the Kaiser NeuroMap. This technology allows her to assess 55 functional brain areas and seven cortical networks to identify which ones

are underactive, overactive, or unstable. It also reveals areas of the brain that are abnormally dominated by the limbic system (the system responsible for the acute stress response known as fight, flight, or freeze).

Capabilities of the brain

Berry has treated people as young as three and on into their eighties and says, “it’s never too late.” Thanks to something called neuroplasticity, she explains, the brain continues to make new neurons and create new neural networks until the day we die. There are several techniques she recommends specifically for people concerned with age-related cognitive decline: Synchrony, Vielight photo biomodulation, and white matter tracking. Berry is not a physician, and biofeedback, she says, is not a medical treatment. However, things for which people typically seek out medical treatment for can often be made better by biofeedback. Generally speaking, biofeedback is well respected among medical professionals, but there is some lingering skepticism surrounding neurofeedback. This, she thinks, is due in part to the lack of consistency in training. For anyone contemplating biofeedback or neurofeedback, Berry advises, “board certification needs to be the hallmark that the consumer is looking for.” To learn more, visit www.cbfclinic.com.

Give Hope. Save Lives. October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month BY: » Jean Spangler

E

very October Breast Cancer Awareness Month is marked in countries across the world to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease. This year’s theme “Give Hope. Save Lives” is part of a yearly effort to ask women and men alike to show their support for breast cancer survivors and those battling the disease by wearing pink ribbons or clothing throughout the month. For area residents Jenny Alexander and Vicki Gray, October is especially meaningful as both are breast cancer survivors from different age groups who talk candidly and openly about their respective journeys—from diagnosis and coping strategies to how a cancer diagnosis changes your life in a split second.

Jenny Alexander

Alexander, staff associate for the children’s ministry at Davidson College Presbyterian Church, was a 39-year old mother of three when she felt a lump in her breast in October 2013. “As soon as I felt the lump I knew it didn’t feel right,” she says. “I called my family physician the next day who quickly ordered a mammogram that detected a mass. An ultrasound followed the mammogram and later a biopsy that confirmed the mass was malignant.” Alexander says hearing the word, “malignant” is a shock no matter how prepared you think you’ll be. “My husband Robert and I were expecting our first child when we were told we were having twins,” she says, and that’s a shock, but one you happily settle into.

20 LimitlessMagOnline.com | October 2020

Vicki Gray was diagnosed with breast cancer after her mammogram in May 2018.

“The diagnosis affects the entire family,” says Alexander. “I got in touch with someone who was finishing her journey with cancer treatment to talk— one of the best things I did as she ‘got it’ in terms of what I was feeling. My family and friends were all very supportive, but sometimes talking to someone who has experienced the entire reality of what it means to have cancer helped me tremendously.”

Seven years later, Jenny is cancer free and credits a team of great and caring physicians, a loving faith community, friends and a supportive family for helping her deal with the various states of treatment and recovery. “You can face cancer with either a sink moment or a swimming moment,” says Jenny. “Cancer teaches you a lot about yourself,” and that’s just one of many positives that came out of my journey.”

All the Where the ROLD ight isSthe tuff new NEW AT THE DEPOT

From left, breast cancer survivor Jenny Alexander, her three daughters and husband Robert.

Vicki Gray

Vicki Gray was the mother of three young adults and grandmother of two when she was diagnosed with breast cancer after a mammogram in 2018. “My breast cancer was found through a mammogram in May 2018,” says Gray. “I had no family history of the disease and just assumed I’d get the letter I’d always received following my mammogram, the ‘you’re fine letter.’” But the mammogram picked up a mass. Further tests confirmed it was breast cancer and in July she began chemotherapy, radiation and later, surgery. “I think as women we often see ourselves as the caretakers,” she says.

“It took me a while to accept help from others.” Gray says her faith community was especially supportive and encouraging. She feels that people who go through something traumatic are later able to help others. “I had women who had traveled this road help me navigate decisions better,” says Gray. “My advice to women is to make sure you never delay your annual mammogram,” she adds. “Early detection is so important.” So, if you are organizing your closets, put a section away for your pink dress, shirt, or pocketbook to show your support for people like Jenny Alexander and Vicky Gray and others just like them.

Can I vote early?

Beginning 19 days before the election, all North Carolina counties must open at least one location where citizens can vote early. Visit vt.ncsbe.gov/ossite and type in the county you live in to find a list of places offering early voting.

Will COVID-19 precautions be put in place?

Election officials received an extra $27 million from state and federal funds for the November election to cover technology, equipment, sanitizing supplies and personal protective equipment to safeguard poll workers at voting locations. If you vote in person, expect to see a plastic barrier at the check-in table and markings to enforce social distancing. Poll workers will be wearing masks, face shields and gloves.

Hand sanitizer and masks will be available for voters, and each voter will get a single-use pen in counties with paper ballots, or a cotton ball in counties with ballot-marking machines. Voters who are unable to enter the polling place due to age or disability will have the option of casting their ballot from their cars.

Cariocas get together in Confeitaria Colombo.

M

y wife, Mary Ellen and I have a preference. We like to, literally, absorb a culture, wherever in the world we find it. Absorb, in terms of absolutely taking it in and ingesting it. I’ll get onto some examples of that in a little while. First, let me do some philosophical musing. Many of us have graduated from the commercial world to a new phase in life. And it’s interesting to look at what time has to do with that. Back in the commercial world one’s time was not really one’s to own and control. Whether it be a supervisor, a customer or a client, someone else had some ownership of it. When those guys are out of the picture, time is all your own; to use as you see fit. Time is no longer of the essence; it is the essence. And that’s neat. What my wife and I chose to do with our time is to travel and experience different cultures around the country and around world. And, this is extremely important, we fervently want to experience and not, merely, to observe. As I said, our chosen method is cuisine. Breaking bread (or something more substantial and tastier) and sipping wine

together is the best way to get to know someone. I’ll share a few of our adventures in future articles. But let’s take Rio de Janeiro in Brazil as an example. Rio is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It’s full of many famous tourist attractions—Sugar Loaf Mountain, Corcovado. We avoid them. We are far more interested in digging into the Carioca lifestyle. “Cariocas” is the term for local residents of Rio de Janeiro. To us, Rio’s beautiful attractions are best viewed from a distance. We prefer local culture and the up close and personal approach. We generally head to downtown Rio. Aside from the tourist attractions, Rio is a large, gritty city with real people going about real lives. A great place to mingle with them is downtown at the Confeitaria Colombo. Occasionally, you’ll find a tourist or two but most of the time you’re in the company of a crowd of Cariocas. The Confeitaria Colombo is stunning. It was founded in 1894 by Portuguese immigrants Joaquim Borges de Meireles and Manuel José Lebrão. Its architecture was inspired by European cafes of the time. It’s full of crystal mirrors and display cases filled with European pottery. The

atmosphere, the company and the food is compelling. This place is the “real Rio.” One experience we had there is worth telling. We were seated and going over the menu when our server asked if we’d like to start with a coffee. Mary Ellen asked if she could have a decaf espresso. The server became silent and we assumed that we were in the middle of a linguistic misunderstanding. No misunderstanding; our server was astounded that anyone would want to take the caffeine out of a perfectly good coffee bean. She settled for a mineral water. Another place we gravitate to, is La Fiorentina restaurant, located away from the more popular sections of Copacabana Beach. This place has been an integral part of Rio’s performing arts scene for

years and that’s reflected in the decor. Walls are covered by photos of actors and musicians. We don’t know any of them, but they surely create an atmosphere. Once again, there may be a tourist or two, but the majority of diners are people who live or work in that area of the city. Our normal strategy at any restaurant is to order one of the special dishes on offer. That way we’re probably going to get a more local dish. But, first, we go in the direction of wine. Brazilian wine is almost never encountered back home. There is a thriving and fast-growing wine region to the south of the country. There are many types of wine to choose from. My favorite is made from the red grape, Tannat. Tannat is a smalltime player in France that has found a successful new

home in Brazil and neighboring Uruguay. A bottle soon found its way to our table, along with two glasses. Wonderful. Actually, we found this restaurant by a happy piece of luck. We were planning Photos of actors and musicians at to eat lunch at La Fiorentina. a more famous and sophisticated like local business types restaurant. We turned up at wandering into a place for a little after noon and were lunch. We followed them told, somewhat haughtily, and have been dining at that the restaurant wasn’t La Fiorentina ever since. open and we should come Rio de Janeiro is a back later. Our haughtiness wonderful city. There’s so was standing right in more much to it than the front of a sign saying that famous tourist spots. And we the restaurant opened have so much more to share. at noon. We pointed this Hanging with the Cariocas out and were told, again, and sharing time, food and to come back later. We wine is a pure joy. Our time never did. While walking is the essence and culture back along the beachfront is a great way to invest it. we noticed what looked Here’s to food and wine!

True Wealth -

A Life of Lessons Passed On

I

was recently asked by a 92-year-old if she should create a journal of her life experiences for her kids and grandkids to read. “Would anyone be interested?” she wondered. The question got me thinking. If true wealth is defined by the people we meet and the experiences we have, why wait until late in life to share those experiences? Maybe there is more fulfillment from an expanded definition of True Wealth, which includes the value of our lasting legacy by sharing our experiences with others. In simple terms, a legacy is something passed from one generation to the next and often focuses on money. However, life experiences have value and can also be passed on. Normal retirement planning naturally has a legacy component due to investment account beneficiaries, but what about the future role of life insurance? Since group coverage generally terminates when work ends, that decision is predetermined, but what should be done about your personal policies? Should you even consider adding a policy? Life insurance is a financial asset and, therefore, it should provide value. For analytical purposes, consider the premium versus the tax-free, economic value of the death benefit. For planning purposes, consider who will benefit from the added money. Additional income for a spouse? College opportunities for grandkids or maybe a legacy for charity? The journey of one’s life or the impact of a financial leg up can forever change the course of life for those who matter to us. That is the legacy of true wealth! A Healthy Home - Inside and Out

E

veryone wants a healthy home, especially now that we’ve experienced the recent pandemic, but what exactly does this mean? Most important to having a ‘healthy home’ is creating excellent indoor air quality (IAQ). To achieve great IAQ when building a new home, consider what you put into your home including knowing what chemicals are in the building materials that are used, what’s in the interior finishes and furnishings you choose, and the products you use when cleaning your home. Make sure the home is well sealed from outside air by caulking and sealing all openings in the exterior walls. In an existing home, interior finishes can be up-dated by using paints that do not out-gas toxic chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). The next really important aspect is a well-designed HVAC system that provides proper ventilation and fresh air intakes, along with air cleaning filters and dehumidification. Moisture control is essential to prevent mold growth. We live in an area where radon gas is found, so radon mitigation should be considered as well. Maintaining proper IAQ and ventilation includes things you can do. Turn on the kitchen exhaust fan when cooking to remove moisture and smells, make sure the bathroom fan runs when taking a shower, and close the damper on fireplaces to prevent back-drafting when the fans are running. Finally, on the exterior of the home, be sure to use lawn care products that are not known to be harmful to your health. All of these tips will help you enjoy your home in a healthier way inside and out.
