The Heart of Giving I’ve been a part of charitable organizations since I was a Girl Scout in the late 60s. In high school, I was a member of several civic clubs and throughout my career, I have welcomed the opportunity to give back to my community through actively serving or raising funds for an importance cause. As we have the opportunity to age, we sometimes feel we’ve given our fair share and that it’s time to let the younger generation “step up to the plate.” In my mind, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The older we get, the more lives we’ve seen changed by a caring hand, an open heart or a listening ear. Being a part of that kind of change, never gets old! Generations after us are being taught the importance of self-care, which is important. But are they missing out on the art of caring for others? Are we setting an example of selflessness for our children and grandchildren? Yes,
this has been a year for the record books. Staying home, sheltering in place and social distancing has created in us a more inward-seeking attitude, when actually we should be using this time to seek out those who need our help now more than ever. As we enter into the holiday season, let us focus on the true spirit of the season of giving and make ourselves available in whatever capacity we are able. Prepare a meal, make the phone call, send the check, give online, be someone’s advocate; find your gift and give it. You and I have been given the precious gift of time so let’s commit to using it for

I
first noticed photographer Peter O’Reilly’s work when Mooresville Arts shared on their Facebook page that he was their September 2020 “Member of the Month.” “I am beginning to regard myself as something of a rule breaker, becoming less satisfied with photographs just being a representation of truth at a given moment,” he wrote as part of his bio. “I am not so sure 10 LimitlessMagOnline.com | November 2020

that the camera never lies! I think the various programmes I use are the equivalent of the different tools that other artists use in their given genre. Anything a painter can do to a canvas I can do to a photograph.” When I reached out to Mooresville Arts to express my interest in talking to Peter for LIMITLESS, executive director Jessica DeHart informed me his wife Barbara is also a member, and that she’s a mixed media artist. She was a featured artist for Mooresville Arts in September 2019. I met with them over coffee in Davidson to learn more. Their story is a great example of how retirement can truly provide limitless opportunities to explore passions.
The art of education
It was a chance meeting that brought Peter and Barbara O’Reilly together, but it didn’t take long for them to realize they had much in common. These days the two former educators are taking
time to travel, volunteer and immerse themselves in their artistic endeavors. In 2001, Peter, who was divorced at the time and living in England, decided he wanted to learn more about the education system in other parts of the world. He joined an organization called Visiting International Faculty (VIF) and was placed in Cleveland County, teaching fourth grade for two years in the town of Shelby. During that time Barbara, who was also divorced and teaching art at Brawley Middle School, hosted a female teacher who was also part of the VIF program. Barbara had been working hard on her National Board Certification for teaching and her roommate encouraged her to get out of the house for a bit and attend an VIF mixer the group was hosting. While at that event, Barbara and Peter struck up a conversation and soon realized they were interested in getting to know one another.
Meeting Barbara convinced Peter to eventually move to Mooresville and he got a job teaching third grade at Mount Mourne Elementary School. After getting married, he and Barbara both spent their final years prior to retirement helping develop the curriculum at Mt. Mourne IB School (now called The Brawley School) and teaching the students there.
Immersion and exploration
For the last six years, Barbara has been honing her craft as a mixed media painter. She’s attended the Penland School of Craft, an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives in Spruce Pine, N.C. twice. She and Peter had planned to both complete residencies there this past summer before the pandemic put a wrench in those plans. explorers & ADVENTURES nature, but I’m inspired by it,” she says. Barbara also enjoys collaging techniques with acrylic paints. Her artwork has been in several juried shows including Mooresville’s “Art at the Mill” event where she received the 2018 People’s Choice Award. She also loves being a grandmother and helping out whenever she’s need with childcare. She even hosted some online art classes via Zoom for elementary-school children during the early months of the pandemic.

Peter says he first became interested in photography when he had to make a pinhole camera for a science project in middle school. When he and Barbara
travel, he takes every opportunity to photograph their experiences but also enjoys capturing different perspectives. He says he likes playing with light and water, not necessarily using processes, but more looking for composition into what is naturally occurring. Peter, who has a jovial laugh, also went through a phase of taking photos of things like water towers but considers that a failed attempt. While he’s often used the Adobe Lightroom editing software, he’s been experimenting more and more with Photoshop to create layered images. His photography has also been displayed at Mooresville Arts. Working with children continues to be a focus in his life. In addition to his photography, Peter volunteers as a Guardian
ad Litem for Iredell County. While attending a Davidson Rotary Club meeting several years ago he heard a speaker discuss the importance of the program and attended the training to become a volunteer. A Guardian ad Litem serves as a court appointed advocate who serves as the voice for abused or neglected children in the county. Barbara jokes that these days she’s always sketching, and Peter is always taking photographs and volunteering at Mooresville Arts helps them solidify that common interest. They are excited about how the organization has helped bring a new vitality to downtown Mooresville and also look forward to seeing what Cain Center for the Arts will also bring to the area.

Service & Honor Organizations support area veterans

hile there’s a special day designated to honor veterans in our country in November, it’s important to remember they deserve community support and recognition all year long. After all, veterans have fought for our country and the freedoms we so often take for granted. Currently, there are approximately 90,000 military veterans living in the four counties surrounding the Lake Norman area, according to the website lknvetsandpatriots.com. The website is a comprehensive resource that helps connect local veterans, active duty members and military spouses in the LKN community. It can also help enhance the in-person networking of veteran organizations and events. Below are just a few organizations in our area that are dedicated to serving veterans year round that we wanted to spotlight.
Richard’s Coffee Shop and the Welcome Home Veterans Living Military Museum
A downtown Mooresville institution, Richard Warren, a Vietnam War veteran, opened up the shop in 1995. He named it “Pat’s Gourmet Coffee Shop,” in honor of his wife, but it quickly grew to become much more. Warren became accustomed to greeting every veteran who came through the doors with a hearty “Welcome Home.” Warren passed away in 2009, but his legacy of supporting fellow veterans carries on. Following his death, Pat’s Gourmet Coffee Shop temporarily closed down. But with the persistence of a number of regular patrons who missed the camaraderie of the shop, a new location opened just down the street from the original Pat’s in 2009. The non-profit board Welcome Home Veterans, Inc. helped underwrite the cost. Now christened Richard’s Coffee 14 LimitlessMagOnline.com | November 2020

Shop, the location also showcases The Welcome Home Veterans Living Military Museum, an impressive collection of donated memorabilia, and visitors can now view a collection of donated items and relics through carefully curated displays. Though closed during the pandemic, the shop is normally a hub for residents and veterans alike, with free coffee offered on Thursdays and bluegrass jam sessions on Saturdays. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 321 in Huntersville
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. After the formation of The American Legion, a number of women’s organizations wanted to become the official affiliation of The American Legion. The women who had served so faithfully during the trying days of the war wanted to continue to serve. After careful consideration, the committee agreed that a new organization should be made up of the women most closely associated with the men of the Legion, and that these women would serve with the Legion, in peace as they had in war. In the spirit of Service Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. “For God and country, the ALA advocates for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.” While there are eligibility requirements to become a member of the ALA, anyone can be a part of the organization’s
service programs and are encouraged to participate. ALA Unit 321 president Julie Hogan says this particular unit works closely with the W.G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center at the Salisbury VA Hospital. They provide multiple donations throughout the year, including the Briefs for the Brave program (collecting underwear for the Salisbury VA), Bingo games for patients, cards during military holidays, and there are twice-a-year meals with other area legion posts and auxiliary units. ALA Unit 321 has joint members in the unit and the Charlotte USO that volunteer in the USO in the Charlotte airport, and they also volunteer at holiday events for families of deployed soldiers at the local armories. For Veteran’s Day, the group will be creating and sending cards to the VA hospital as part of their November service project. id you know that “Apple cider vinegar” is the most searched Google health topic locally and across the United States? Many swear by its health benefits including helping weight loss, blood sugar, complexion, digestion, energy levels, heart health and immune system.

The term appears in 11 of the top 100 searches combined with weight loss, detox, benefits, gummies, drink and mother (the cloud of yeast and bacteria you see in unfiltered bottles). Apple cider vinegar has been used medicinally
for centuries, but most of the science community remains skeptical, citing little support for these claims. Weight loss fans believe taking apple cider before before meals helps curb appetite and burn fat. It may help lower blood sugar
levels in diabetics by changing how foods get absorbed from the gut, though the research sample size is very small. Apple cider vinegar is the fermented juice of crushed apples. It contains acetic acid and nutrients such as B vitamins and vitamin C. The acid and probiotic “mother” are believed to provide the health benefits. If you’re looking to use it for health reasons, most recommend adding 1 to 2 tablespoons to water or tea or adding apple cider vinegar to salads and food as a dressing. Many prefer the convenience of pill form or a new trend, gummies, over the liquid version. Gummies claim to provide all benefits without the harsh vinegar taste, appearing in five of the 11 top apple cider vinegar searches. Goli is the best-selling gummy brand,
with 550,000 Facebook fans and 4.5-star rating and 74,000 reviews on Amazon. Apple cider vinegar has superpower status in the wellness community. Most medical professions caution that it is not the health cure-all or weight-loss jump starter you may think, nor should it take the place of other medications. According to the Mayo Clinic, taking apple cider vinegar daily poses little risk for most people, though it may cause throat irritation, damage to tooth enamel or interaction with certain drugs including diuretics and insulin. Like all supplements, consult with your health care professional for the most relevant advice. I just found a bottle of organic ACV with “mother” in the pantry. Gonna give it a try.

iy wife and I took a different route to the Charlotte area than most inhabitants of the queendom. We didn’t flow in a torrent downward; we trickled up, a state at a time, from our family homes in south Alabama. My wife and I were
born, bred, raised, and remain influenced by south Alabama more than any other single place in our lives. To us, the Holiday Season begins with Thanksgiving—my personal favorite—and carries over to college bowl season, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

Bring on the decorating
These days in our 55+ community of Bailey’s Glen, the holiday season means decorating. People will decorate anything that sits still. Mailboxes, sidewalks, the grass on the opposite side of alleys,
porches, cars, front doors, and dogs. Thankfully ( from my perspective at least), at our house, we tend to bring out family trinkets and heirlooms— although they tend to fall more in the novelty that the heirloom category— after Thanksgiving— unless Thanksgiving
falls late in November. I do worry about some husbands in our community. Because if they do not sniff out the early signs of impending décormania and make themselves scarce, they will lose points from their Man Cards for participation in unintended decorating. Worst of all, no beer and brats. My male friends might as well watch HGTV on those new 80inch Ultra HD televisions they purchased as early Christmas presents just for watching sports.

Growing up in rural southwest Alabama, we were country people. And, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s
mornings—typically humid, warm, and sticky—were for rabbit hunting with our beagles and coming home to the smell of turkey or ham on the dinner or supper table. About two weeks before Christmas, we boys were sent into the woods to cut our Christmas tree. When we were dispatched to chop down the perfect cedar or pine tree—and one year a holly—we were sent out with a shotgun. Rattlesnakes like to come out on those warm December days, too. Growing up, gift-giving— not gifting—at our house almost always had an outdoor theme. Maybe hunting. Maybe fishing. I particularly remember the Christmas of 1956. It was the first time I heard of LL Bean.

My older brother Bill, my Daddy and I each got a pair of LL Bean Boots. You know the ones—with the rubber footbed and the leather uppers? They were some fine hunting boots, and the only thing we got, or wanted, for Christmas that year. Come to think of it, I think I might still have those boots way back behind the Christmas decorations in
the garage. Probably not. Just the thought of those boots lingers fondly in my memory nearly seven decades gone by. Of all the Christmas memories, why that one? Because whenever we laced up those boots, that simple act, years removed from 1956, always brought our family together again for another holiday morning rabbit hunt.

ornelius resident Dr. Susan Harper has achieved many accomplishments throughout her career as a business psychologist and human resource consultant specializing in professional development for Fortune 100, mid-market, government and healthcare organizations. After spending most of her life in Chicago where she lived with her husband, Dennis Lynch, they chose Cornelius to retire in 2014 for its great climate and quality of life. It was when she moved to Cornelius she joined the North Mecklenburg Women’s Club. There, she heard Susan Andersen, the founder of a unique nonprofit, ANSWER Scholarship, talk about the mission of the organization that provides college scholarships, mentoring and professional development programs to Charlotte-area mothers of school age children. “When I retired, I began exploring a volunteer opportunity,” says Harper. “It was important that it be something I could be passionate about. As a business psychologist in my former working life, I knew I wanted to utilize those same skills as a volunteer to help an organization grow and change. Fortunately, I found ANSWER Scholarship six years ago and have been actively engaged with them in a variety of areas.”

believer that education changes lives,” says Harper, who will assume the role of Governing Board Chair in January 2021. A graduate of Tulane University, she received a Ph.D. in organizational psychology from the University of Chicago. She has also been an associate professor, teaching business students leadership and organizational behavior. Founded in 2006 with just four scholarship recipients, ANSWER Dr. Susan Harper now has 19 scholars and vastly expanded programming. The organization has also grown to include 60 volunteers who donate their time in areas including mentoring, professional development, public relations and communications, legal assistance, fundraising and marketing. According to Harper, the organization’s Mentors For Mom program is one of the strongest aspects of helping mothers who postponed their
education due to having children or other life circumstances. ANSWER serves Mecklenburg and the eight surrounding counties. Since its inception ANSWER has funded 155 college scholarships to almost 90 area mothers. “We’ve helped some remarkable mothers earn college degrees and become strong and self-sufficient,” says Harper. “In return, their children are inspired to follow their mother’s example and work harder in school.”

ANSWER’s graduation rate is 85 percent, compared to the national graduation rate of 46 percent for nontraditional students. Program graduates have earned degrees from UNC Charlotte, Winthrop University and Johnson C. Smith University among just a few of the many other colleges and universities. Some have gone on to earn master’s degrees and one scholar is working on her Ph.D.

Harper says what she loves most about being part of ANSWER is the satisfaction of seeing a mother truly transform her life and those of her children. She cites one mother who had dropped out of school in sixth grade who came to ANSWER when she was in her mid-30s with several children. Through the support of ANSWER, she completed her college degree and is now in a strong career path. Harper adds that seeing mothers remain dedicated to completing their education while raising children has shown her the perseverance these women have to making a better life for themselves and their families. “One of our current scholars is a mother of three and a senior at Belmont Abbey earning her B.S. degree in business administration and a minor in information technology,” says Harper. “This mother lived in a homeless shelter as a child,” she says. “She said her going back to school helped her gain the confidence she lacked early in life.” With each completed semester Harper says she watched this mother’s confidence grow along with her self-worth. ichelle Hoverson, a female pastor based in Cornelius, brings a fresh perspective on faith and fortitude to her growing community. Serving as an Associate Pastor at Grace Covenant for nearly two decades was simply the start of her vocation in service and mentorship, most recently authoring a book called Mentoring Moments with Myself.

Her career as a pastor stemmed from an inner invitation she felt. Simply put, “it was never in my personal plan, but was in God’s.” With both of her grandfathers serving as pastors in their communities, this level of commitment in the church was not foreign to Hoverson. She recalls the way the book came to life, shortly after she was invited to speak as part of a guest series on unsung heroes. She spoke about Jonathan in 1 Samuel 14, concluding that “In the end, people most often regret the chances they failed to take—not the chances they took and failed.” She then shared a letter she had written to her younger self, which is now the first letter in her book, titled “Go for It.” A friend of Hoverson’s posted the video of her reading the letter, and soon it had close to 20,000 views—with many requests for her to write more. Like other moments in Hoverson’s life, she felt a calling to do something she had never expected—write a book. In just over a year she had a collection of 16 letters on life, faith, love and leadership, allowing her to share her learnings and missteps with others. Her hope is that anyone who reads her book will see that those in ministry are not perfect, they are simply gaining a new perspective. She hopes readers of her book might change courses and avoid going down the wrong path through her personal reflections.

Going above and beyond
The proceeds of the book will all go to fund her non-profit organization, Above and Beyond Missions, which is dedicated to granting funds for short-term mission trips through local service. What once started as a local foundation has now gained headway, allowing more than 1,300 individuals to go on missions and resulting in over 18,000 hours of local non-profit service. The motto “serve local to go global” is an important aspect of the organization, with hopes that even after the individuals return from their trip, they will continue to serve their community. Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Habitat for Humanity are just a few of the many organizations that Above and Beyond Missions works with. Through speaking with Hoverson, it is apparent that her faith will continue to guide her through whatever is in store next. After a short break in 2020, her organization is now accepting applicants for mission trips in early 2021. M
y wife, Mary Ellen, and I have a definite way of traveling. We like to dive deep into different cultures, to absorb them. And our preferred approach is to share food and wine with locals—to dine with them and, literally, to absorb their culture. But, in Barcelona, it takes a little effort. Barcelona is the selfstyled capital city of the Mediterranean. It is a victim of its own tourism success. The mayor of the city, Ada Colau, captured it best. She asserted that the city was sacrificing itself on the altar of tourism, becoming a theme park, full of fast food and souvenirs, without any real identity. We agree and hope that the situation can be turned around. In the meantime, we have a method of avoiding the maddening crowd and getting into the real Barcelona. Together with a small group of fellow travelers, we arrange a
guided tour of some of the myriad tapas bars in the city. We go for the real Barcelona, far away from the tchotchke shops, interspersed by restaurants serving paella that has a startling shade of chrome yellow. Barcelona is more than a city, it’s a collection of distinct districts with distinct characters and it all shines through in local tapas bars. We meet up with our guide at the statue, “El Toro Pensador”—the thinking bull. It’s almost like a spy movie with its own secret greeting code. In our case it goes like this—“Are you hungry for some tapas?” Our response is, “You bet.” Then we get together and off we go. This is a walking tour. Along the way our guide fills us in on the character of the district that’s our destination. Then we end up in a local bar. Our table is quickly covered with tapas dishes. This is not to be confused with a restaurant. It’s a bar, in most cases, a very old one.

A bar that serves food. Not bar food but some of the most delicious tapas you’ll ever come across. One time, our group contained some not very adventurous friends from Scotland. They eyed the dishes with a good amount of Gaelic suspicion. One taste and the suspicion vanished into thin air—the food also vanished, fairly quickly. Once, we were going from one tapas bar to the next when we passed a very small establishment. Our guide asked us if anyone liked white anchovies. Our Scottish friends stayed silent. We all went in and noshed on, what our guide called, the best white anchovies in Barcelona. He was right on and our Scottish friends dove right in—suspicion completely gone. Of course, there was a glass of local wine to go along with the anchovies. Wine is an integral part of our “tapas bar crawl.” All wines are from local, Catalonian regions that surround Barcelona. Some
may be recognizable because they make it across the pond. But most are really local, many of them tapped from a barrel rather than poured from a bottle. Speaking of wine, we always end up, at our request, at our favorite wine bar in the city, La Vinya del Senyor. La Vinya del Senyor is located on Plaça de Santa Maria, opposite the Santa María del Mar basilica. We have dozens of stories about La Vinya del Senyor. It’s more of a wine bar than a tapas bar. It does serve snacks, but its main attraction is a wine list as thick as a novel. It’s a great place to dabble in Spanish wines; there are dozens by the glass. And its location looking out at the basilica is spectacular. One great way to end a “tapas bar crawl.” Once you get away from the tourist hoards, Barcelona is a dream of a city. It’s a great place to go culture diving. If you’re into food and wine, I can’t think of a better place. After all, Barcelona converted even a couple of very suspicious Scots.

Cheerio
Cheerio, a Labrador/retriever mix, is a special needs dog. He was born with water on his brain, so he has seizures and paces in a circle a lot. He is on meds to control his issues and for the moment his seizures are under control. He is on meds that MUST be given every 12 hours or he could seize. Coco is the sweetest boy and has only known patience and love his whole life. He is a happy little man and also loves being outside exploring new things. He is good with other dogs and house trained.
