The Best Modern Dentistry Can Provide

The Smile Architects create an atmosphere to enjoy their work and patients

BY » Jeff Winke

There’s a fun give-and-take online discussion on an architecture forum where a young man living in Copenhagen, Denmark ponders whether he should pursue architecture or dentistry in school.

He said: “although I can’t seem to find the great interest in dentistry amongst architects, I find the main link between them is the appreciation of aesthetics and good, well-functioning design.” He outlines the pros and cons for both professions and concludes that dentistry would be his better option because he would “only get patients who are happy to see you. And you are forced to stay humble as no patients will see you otherwise.” Since this posting is more than a decade old, one has to wonder if there is a humble young Danish dentist out there that maybe designs dentist offices on the side?

“Our name came from our love of designing beautiful smiles and how that affects individuals that have lived life without the confidence to smile,” stated Dr. Chris Meletiou owner of The Smile Architects in Huntersville. “Our office started serving Huntersville and the Lake Norman area in 1982 with Drs. Stephen and Debbie Hix. My brother, Dr. Jim Meletiou, and I joined them in the 1990’s but they have since retired and we acquired the practice.”

On their website, the Meletiou brothers “are dedicated to creating beautiful smiles by providing the most technologically advanced oral care in a comfortable, relaxed environment. Our doctors are meticulous practitioners driven by the desire and ability to bridge the ever-evolving technology with the caring interpersonal relationships necessary to best serve their patients.”

Drs. Chris and Jim Meletiou are supported by dental hygienists Kristen Sheets, Lois Logan, and Winnie Tucker, as well as dental assistants Lara Jehle, Jessie Lafler, and Michelle Davis Gilbert. The practice is rounded out by Karon Fontaine, the doctors’ coordinator, Chantal Wolff, the insurance coordinator, and Sharon Rowsey, the hygiene coordinator.

The Smile Architects provides complete preventive dentistry which includes comprehensive evaluations / oral exams, dental cleaning, creating custom mouth guards for athletes, the treatment of periodontal disease, the non-surgical procedure used to treat gum disease called scaling and root planing, root canal treatments, and extractions.

The practice includes cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign® orthodontic system, same day restorations, dental implants, and sleep apnea treatment.

“Part of what got us involved in dentistry was the creative part,” Dr. Chris Meletiou stated. “We’ve always enjoyed being able to apply our hands to create things.”

“Dentistry has really been evolving technologically in the last 30 years and we saw that part and what it could do for people and wanted to be part of that. I think we both wanted to be able to decide how patients were treated without interference and so for us practicing in a family type of setting was important.”

Their goals are to listen and meet each individual’s needs. “Everybody is different and may be looking for different treatment types,” they said. “We provide the best treatment modern dentistry can provide and create an atmosphere where we can enjoy our profession, our team and patients.”
