The human body is mechanically sophisticated. Human movement is achieved by a complex and highly coordinated mechanical interaction between bones, muscles, ligaments and joints.

No one understands this better than Dr. Brett L. Feldman with Piedmont Bone & Joint in Statesville. Dr. Feldman is an orthopaedic doctor which is sort of like being a mechanic for the human body.

The practice at Piedmont concentrates on the evaluation and management of disorders and injuries of bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Feldman specializes in all aspects of foot and ankle disorders. Some of the disorders he concentrates on include bunions, complex fractures, painful heel, arthritis, rheumatoid deformities, and total joint replacement--knee, hip and ankle. In addition to his sub-specialty foot and ankle practice, Dr. Feldman maintains a strong interest in sports medicine and arthroscopy, trauma and post-traumatic deformity, and total joint replacement, including the latest technique in anterior, muscle sparing total hip replacement.

“As a child I liked anything mechanical, taking stuff apart to learn how it worked,” stated Feldman. “In high school, studying biology and playing sports I became interested in how the body works.”

A football injury in high school landed him in the office of an orthopaedist--a foretelling and lucky visit. The doctor had played football in high school as well, so they got talking about team sports and how athletes should take care of their bodies and improve performance. Feldman was fascinated with how the doctor was able to describe how the human body works. His descriptions clicked and helped Feldman visualize how the body works.

This interest in the mechanics of how the human body operates buoyed him into his profession.

“I enjoy learning,” Feldman said.

“In high school, studying biology and playing sports I became interested in how the body works.”

“I enjoy orthopaedics because there is so much to learn that can help patients to live better, healthier lives. I never want to limit my interest and practice to a singular sub-specialty when everything is interconnected.”

Because he believes knowledge in the field of orthopaedics is evolving and growing, it is not uncommon to see Dr. Feldman in his off hours reading a medical journal article.

“I’ll take advantage of so-called ‘dead time,’ while my car’s oil change occurs or my carry-out pizza is being baked, to catch up on necessary reading,” said Feldman. “The field is dynamic so if I can learn something new that can help me better care for patients, I want to learn it.”

Dr. Feldman is entitled to display FAAOS along with MD when writing his name. FAAOS stands for “Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.” The designation is proudly displayed by surgeons who have completed all the stringent requirements to qualify for membership. He was named to the 2021 Top Doctors in Charlotte Magazine and was recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors for 2007 by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a leading national healthcare and research and information company. He is an active member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Although Dr. Feldman is a trained surgeon, he doesn’t believe surgery is the best or only answer for every issue.

“Most patients do not require surgery--let me repeat that--most don’t need surgery,” Feldman said. “There are numerous non-operative solutions that are effective and I prefer to seek out before surgery becomes the best option.”

Dr. Feldman completed his undergraduate and medical degree studies at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida and served his Residency at the Henry Ford Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan.

In many respects, Dr. Feldman isn’t much different than the kid he was who enjoyed taking things a part to see how they work. Today, Dr. Feldman uses what he knows to fix human bodies to work better.
