today’s TOPIC

Wealth Management in the face of Inflation

P

rices have definitely gone up. According to the Bureau of Labor statistics, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 7.9 percent over the 12 months from February 2021 to March 2022. That’s the largest inflation increase since September 2008. In light of this, many are asking themselves how to maintain the purchasing power of their assets in the face of the current surge in inflation. We reached out to a number of area experts for some ideas and perspectives. There does not seem to be a silver bullet, though creative thinking and some tactical changes can be useful. David Hedges, of Bookman Bright Retirement Planning, in Davidson, points out that, “As consumers, there’s not a lot that you can do if it’s necessities that you’re buying other than continue to shop for the best value with regard to the goods and services that you normally buy. If you’re buying discretionary and luxury items, you obviously have a choice as to whether you buy them or not and if you do buy, how much of it. Again, shopping for value is a good approach here.” In terms of investments, Daniel Tobias, of Passport Wealth Management, in Cornelius, advises against churning the turbulent waters. “The important ‘strategy’ for today’s inflation,” Tobias said, “Is to stick to the strategy you had before it all began.” A well-constructed wealth management strategy, he says, already takes account of the possibility of inflation. “Wealth strategy is on a long time horizon,” he said. And as unwelcome as it is at any time, “there is no reason to expect that there won’t be inflation at some point.” That said, Tobias does note the possibility that tactical adjustments may be necessary. An example would be new home construction, where it might be better to postpone the investment. Derek Bostian of Two Waters Wealth Management, in Huntersville, sees it this way: “Inflation’s one of those things that can be a “silent killer” of a retirement income plan. We’ve grown

10 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2022

BY » Peter Eisenhauer

used to tame inflation over the past 20 years but the current environment has thrown that out the window. Now with inflation currently running at 7.9% in a historically low interest-rate environment, investors and retirees specifically are finding themselves in a tight spot.” Bostian notes that former safe haven investments like bonds, which have an inverse relationship to interest rates see downward pressure when interest rates rise. Because of this, he said, “Retirees are having to find different strategies to offset the risk in bonds with rising inflation and prices. One of those options is to look for shorter term investments like TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Securities) which rise in price with inflation but fall with deflation.” Bostian said that today’s retiree could also look at shorter duration bonds as another potential short-term solution. “Taking on more risk for most people isn’t an option or a desire, so understanding your income plan and investment plan and how they coordinate together in today’s economic environment is crucial to securing a safe and comfortable retirement for many people,” said Bostian. Hedges, of Bookman Bright, said that “if you’re in a rising interest rate environment, longer maturity bonds/ fixed income are generally not a good idea. With respect to owning equities, consider companies and owning portfolios that have the ability to raise prices without affecting the demand for their products or services.” He adds that “owning companies that have a lot of debt during a rising interest rate environment can be problematic for obvious reasons.” “There are a number of things that you can do about inflation as an investor,” said Hedges. One of these involves taking a different approach to liquidity. “First on the list is getting some velocity/interest on the money that you’re not using,” Hedges said. “This isn’t your day to day operating cash. This is more like your safe money

or “just in case” money. It’s that stash of cash that you use for unforeseen circumstances. Keeping some cash in your “just in case” pot is always a good idea but also consider keeping a portion in accounts and investment vehicles that you can borrow against short term but are relatively low risk and volatility but you can earn more interest than what you would earn on a savings, checking, money market account or short term CD. This would fit the need of being able to have liquidity at a moment’s notice but not sacrifice the opportunity to earn a respectable rate on the funds by just keeping them in cash and having daily liquidity. Ask yourself this question: Do I have a funding problem or a liquidity problem?” Hedges adds that you should be sure to review all of the details such as the cost of capital. “If you’re paying more interest than what you’re earning, taking more risk than should or you’re not absolutely sure that you can pay it back quickly, it’s not a good idea,” Hedges said. “If you need the money, the liquidity, and it’s likely that it will not be able to be paid back in the short term, consider variations of short-term bonds, or multi-year guaranteed annuity contracts (if you’re close to age 59 ½).” Tobias, of Passport Wealth Management, encourages investors to take the long-term view. “There are a variety of opinions regarding how long the current high levels of inflation will last,” Tobias said. “One thing is certain, the pandemic was something our globalized economy hadn’t dealt with previously and we don’t yet have a perfect prism with which to view the events of the past two years and precisely predict what’s in store as we continue to return to our ‘new’ normal. Some economic indicators are flashing bust while others are flashing boom. If you’re a believer in efficient markets then it might make sense to sit back and let those markets sort themselves out and adjust to new constraints alongside new opportunities.”

Aging

Gracefully Caregiving Corner offers the best elder care management

T

BY » Jeff Winke | PHOTOGRAPHY BY » Lisa Crates

here appear to be three altering events in life when the aging process sucker punches us. Somewhere around 30 when staring in the mirror and recognizing that you don’t look as young and fresh as you think, is the first. Then, when you turn 50 and receive the invitation to join the AARP and you’re thinking how do they know my birthday and I can’t admit to anyone that I’m actually a half-century old. And then lastly, when you you’re in the drivethru getting a bag of to-go-food and the bright-face teen clerk kindly says “I already gave you the senior discount so you’re total is...” All of the above catch us off guard. Reality can be unkind. Thinking positive about aging,

12 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2022

is perhaps the goal for everyone. Aging happens and should be viewed as a wonderful achievement that should be celebrated, right? In a sense, aging with confidence is what all hope for or accepting aging as a natural progression in life. There are challenges with achieving older age. According to the National Council on Aging, millions of older adults struggle every day with health and safety challenges such as chronic disease, falls, and mental health issues, which point to the need for greater care. Involving an aging life care manager can be a positive first step. “It’s always better to get an aging life care manager involved before you think you need one -- think of it as you would

a financial advisor. You don’t wait until you are out of money to get financial advice,” stated Jennifer T. Szakaly, MA, CMC, CG, founder and CEO of Caregiving Corner, LLC, Cornelius, North Carolina. “We really want people to think proactively about aging so that they can make decisions for themselves. Older adults caught in a crisis (broken hip, death of a spouse, etc.) have far fewer choices and usually have to rely on others to decide things for them and that’s just not how it has to be if someone is willing to think ahead. “Some of the signs we tell families to be on the lookout for are: changes in diet and hygiene, noticing more clutter in the home, and if the person’s world is getting smaller - if they stop going

to do things, stay in more, stop seeing friends as often. None of these things means you immediately move into a nursing home -- that’s what everyone fears they’ll hear from a professional. These are just signs that the person may be struggling to manage things cognitively and needs some assistance. Based on what we see when we assess the person, we will know what to do or what to put into place to help them.” Being ahead of the game, so to speak, appears to be the smart place to be in. Caregiving Corner was created in 2005 specifically to assist caregivers of older adults in navigating the longterm care system and to arm them with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions when needing to deal with a crisis caregiving situation. “As my grandmother got older, my mom became her caregiver, as often happens in families,” Szakaly said. “I watched my mom really struggle with not being able to get good answers to the hard questions as things got more complex with my grandmother. It was really frustrating to see that the long-term care system is so fragmented and complicated that someone can’t advocate for a loved one without a lot of obstacles. “I went to graduate school to study gerontology at UNC-Charlotte, so that I could learn more about aging. I was learning about resources right after my mom needed them, so it was too late to help her, but I knew this is what I wanted to do. I wanted to simplify caregiving and simplify the navigation of the long-term care system for families so that they can spend their time and energy just

being family to their aging loved one and not having to work so hard at the procedural tasks of caregiving.” Szakaly continued, “Families and family dynamics are so interesting -sometimes crazy, sometimes sad, but most times so rich with love. I always come back home at the end of my day and realize how lucky I am to have the family that I have. Family is just going to continue to get more diverse in the coming years, so caregiving will get harder for a lot of reasons, which is something people should plan for.” Szakaly’s company, Caregiving Corner, provides care management and counseling services. Their main service, care management, is essentially about assessing someone’s situation and coming up with a plan of resources and services to help them fulfill the plan. For example, if someone has just been diagnosed with dementia pointing to Alzheimer’s and they want to live at home as long as possible, then that’s the goal. Caregiving Corner will help the family and older adult plan for the dynamics of the disease and choose support services based on the needs and budget for longer term care that will likely be required in the future. Care management is useful for people at any point along the continuum. “We have clients who have just relocated to the area who need new doctors and want to look at active communities and we have clients who are under hospice care and are easing to the end, and everyone in between,” Szakaly said. “Involving a care manager is really about choosing to have an advocate, who is an expert

in the field of aging, so that you can plan for aging with the most dignity and independence possible.” Everyone’s situation is different, but a care manager is expected to meet the person/family where they are and help them from that point. With current day family makeup having changed for many, they may not have the traditional family members -- spouse, kids, etc. -- who can step in to serve as their healthcare backbone. That’s where Caregiving Corner can help out. If authorized, a care manager can serve as their healthcare power of attorney, which can be critically helpful. Caregiving Corner has been a part of the Lake Norman area for almost 20 years. “I love the fact that being here we can enjoy several small towns with all their celebrations and events without having to go far, but we are still close to Charlotte,” Szakaly said. “My grandmother used to live in Huntersville and I remember coming here as a child LONG before things got developed. An outing to Tastee-Freeze or the Huntersville Family Restaurant was a big deal. It’s been fun to see the area grow, but I love the older buildings and homes that are still prevalent all around. I like that we have a good diversity in age in this area too.”

M

y wife, Mary Ellen, and I like to hang out in various parts of Barbados. On the west side of the island you’ll find lots of high end resort hotels, some with rather nice restaurants. We tend to avoid them. I have a long-time friend who lives part-time on the island. We like to link up with him and his wife, find some off-the-beaten-track restaurant and dig in to some local dishes. I stay really local. Invariably, I go for Barbados’ national dish, fried flying fish and cou cou. Cou cou is similar to polenta, it’s made from ground up corn meal and okra. My favorite preparation is with a creole sauce. Delicious. More often than not, we would head to the Waterfront Cafe, close to the Marina in downtown Bridgetown. To our great disappointment, the Cafe has closed, permanently. It used to be a great place to people-watch and to see boats as they come in and out of the marina. To be honest, the Waterfront Cafe was definitely on the touristy side. The upside of that is there was a decent selection of wine. The last time we were there, we went for a French wine, La Chablisienne from, unsurprisingly, the Chablis region. I went for my dish of flying fish, a creole version. I have no idea why but our server was surprised and raised her eye-brows when I placed my order. I must not look like what the average creole flying fish and cou cou eater looks like. I don’t care, I like flying fish! So, this time around I relied on my buddy for a restaurant recommendation to replace good old Waterfront. He came up with Champers on the southern tip of the island. A short taxi ride from Bridgetown took us to a beautiful spot. Quite a different atmosphere to the one at Waterfront, this is really a high end restaurant. To me it seemed like we got the best table in the place; a stunning view. The restaurant is in a renovated house that was built in 1860. It’s on top of a small cliff and overlooks the eastern end of Accra Beach. It has a panoramic view of the sea with waves crashing into the rocks just below our table. And, yes, there was flying fish on the menu. I ordered it and was delicious. But, then again, it might have been the view that made the dish taste so good. Mary Ellen went for linguini and a topping of chicken. No surprise, given the quality of the restaurant, wine was widely available at Champers. I opted for a glass or two of Côte du Rhône. So, it’s a proven fact; creole style fried flying fish and Côte du Rhône pair well together, at least they did at Champers. Looking around the restaurant, I was struck by the seeming lack of tourists. Barbados is a huge tourist destination but I guess they all head to those fancy resorts on the west of the island. We asked and found out that Champers gets a lot of local clientele, unlike most other upmarket restaurants on the island. Champers is comfortable. The menu is quite simple, just really good, tasty food—including my fried flying fish. All of that is a huge hit with me. This was an absolute delight. The location is stunning, the service is superb and I got to indulge in my favorite dish and a few glasses of good wine. Perfect.

UNDERSTANDING MEDICARE

• What is Medicare? Medicare is made up of two parts; Part A, which covers inpatient needs and Part B, which covers outpatient needs like office visits, medical testing, and procedures. Part A and Part B are commonly known as “Original Medicare” • Can I delay Medicare? Maybe! Those over 65 who continue working or are enrolled in employer health insurance have the option to delay coverage. If you have “credible coverage”, you can delay enrollment in Part B. Get with your employer to see if your plan is considered credible, if not, you could pay a penalty. • Can I get more coverage? Yes! There are two main paths you can take. One, a Medicare Supplement AKA “Medigap” plan that works along with your Original Medicare and a separate Prescription Drug plan. Or two, you can enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan that contracts with Original Medicare and provides Part A and Part B coverages, most include prescription drug coverage – many offer more benefits like dental, vision, and hearing! • Am I stuck with my choice? No! You can make changes to most plans during the Open Enrollment period, October 15 – December 7 every year.

a moment in time

Mother May I?

BY » Mickey Dunaway

I expect that most of the readers of this column have played the childhood game of Mother, May I? The gist of Mother, May I? is that one person of the group is elected/selected to be “mother, or captain, or father”—you get the idea—and locates herself or himself at the end of the yard, which is the finish line. The remaining children must ask mother or father permission to do certain things that will take them closer to the goal of reaching mother or father. The first one to cross the finish line is the winner and gains control of the game as the new mother or father. This month’s Moment in Time is about people who, as children, probably did not play Mother, May I, or at least did not play it well. We are looking for significant inventions patented in the month of May.

Patents & Inventions in MAY: May 1 » 1888

Patent to Nikola Tesla for “electrical transmission of power” using his Alternating Current (AC) model. Edison’s DC current model lost out to Tesla’s AC model, which, today, powers the world. I know you are wondering about which model the Tesla car uses. It uses both. The electric motors that power the car use AC current, but the batteries which power the motors must be DC.

May 4 » 1943

Igor Sikorsky was granted a patent for the helicopter. But really, it was da Vinci who invented the concept in the late 1400s.

May 6 » 1851

May 10 » 1752

Ben Franklin tested his lighting rod and thereby saved important buildings worldwide from damage from lightning—especially churches due to their tall steeples. Be sure to watch Ken Burns’s PBS series on Benjamin Franklin. You will be amazed.

May 19 » 1931

Edwin Budding of England licensed his invention, the lawnmower. And became the curse of every male— especially during his teen years!

May 22 » 1819

Bicycles were introduced into the US in NYC. They were dubbed “swift walkers.”

May » 1906

John Gorrie patented an ice-making, refrigeration, and air conditioning machine. Southerners are mighty grateful for Mr. Gorrie’s invention.

Wright Brothers were granted a patent for a “Flying Machine,” which had a motor. If you make a trip to The Outer Banks, be sure to stop by the Wright Brother’s National Memorial at Kittyhawk.

May 7 » 1958

May 23 » 1930

Not important, but significant: The Barbie Doll is patented. The doll was named after Ruth Handler’s (the inventor at Mattel) daughter, Barbara. 16 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2022

Patent Act of 1930 allowed for patenting of certain plants. I have often wondered just how much money is made by the inventors of the Encore Azalea and the Knock Out Roses!

May 27 » 1796

James McLean was given a patent for an improvement in piano fortes. Had to do a bit of research on this one. The designation of pianissimo in music means soft, and forte means loud. Therefore, Mclean’s patent improved the ability of the instrument (and its player) to do both.

May 30 » 1790

The First Federal Copyright bill was enacted by Congress and signed by George Washington. The Internet has made plagiarism—a violation of copyright issued to a person—a significant issue in the field of research. As a professor at UNCC, I had a colleague summarily dismissed for plagiarism, and justifiably so. In the field of art—especially music or videos—using a person’s work in public without paying a royalty deprives the creator of income. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Interestingly, I learned from the PBS Ken Burns Special on Benjamin Franklin that Franklin never profited from his inventions. He believed that his creations (swim fins, wood-burning stove, lightning rod, the glass armonica, and bifocals, to name some) should improve the lives of citizens..

Berries Galore! Berry Cheesecake Parfaits

Servings: 4 - 8 oz glasses or 6 - 5 oz lidded Mason Jars Prep time: 15 minutes Chill time: at least 1 hour I love a parfait! Do you remember DQ Peanut Buster parfaits? As a kid, that was the ultimate treat! All those wonderful layers of chocolate, peanuts and ice cream- every spoonful revealed another layer of goodness below. I still love parfaits today, but these days, berries and cheesecake are my layers of choice! Berry Cheesecake Parfaits are so easy to make ahead for celebrations and get togethers, but the festive red and blue berries, layered with the white cream cheese mixture make them the perfect dessert for Memorial Day! Simply blend cream cheese with yogurt, sugar and vanilla . Then layer the cheese mixture with fresh berries and graham cracker crumbs in a fun glass or mason jar and voilà! you have a festive and tasty dessert!. I like to use a mixture of blueberries and strawberries, but any berry will work.

Ingredients

3 tablespoons butter - melted 1 cup graham cracker crumbs 8 oz cream cheese - softened 7.5 oz Greek yogurt (1.5 small containers) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 4 tablespoons sugar 1 pint blueberries - rinsed ½ pint strawberries - rinsed and diced Mint - for garnish

Directions

Mix melted butter and graham cracker crumbs - set aside. In a separate bowl, use a hand mixer to blend softened cream cheese, yogurt, vanilla and sugar together. For easy assembly, spoon mixture into a zip top bag or pastry bag. Snip off the corner of the bag to enable easy piping into stemmed glasses or small glass jars with lids.

Kathy Dicken lives in Huntersville and is the author of the food blog, The Tasty Bits. For more meal ideas that are simple and delicious, you can follow her blog at www.thetastybits.com or on Instagram @thetastybits. 18 LimitlessMagOnline.com | May 2022

In each glass, layer ingredients in this order: - Graham cracker crumbs - Blueberries - Diced strawberries - Cream cheese mixture Repeat. Chill at least 1 hour before serving - Garnish with fresh mint!

NOTES

• To save time, you can buy graham cracker crumbs in the Baking aisle of the grocery. • If taking these parfaits to a cookout, you can make your parfaits in lidded mason jars.

May is National Elder Law Month

Estate Planning with Wills

he National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) has designated May as National Elder Law Month. NAELA was formed in 1987 in response to the growing legal needs of older adults, people with special needs, and their families. The practice of Elder Law and Special Needs Law involves representing, counseling and assisting seniors, people with disabilities and their families in connection with a variety of legal issues such as long-term care planning, estate planning, and guardianship. In designating May as National Elder Law Month, NAELA calls on its members to participate, either individually or collectively, to promote NAELA’s mission – to establish its members as the premier providers of legal advocacy, guidance, and services to enhance the lives of seniors and people with disabilities. The McIntosh Law Firm, a NAELA member, is celebrating National Elder Law Month by announcing our support of the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®. According to the Alzheimer’s Association: one in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or another dementia; more than 6 million Americans are living with the disease; and in 2022, Alzheimer’s disease will cost the United States $321 billion (projected to rise to nearly $1 trillion in 2050). Held annually in the fall, in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Walk to End Alzheimer’s “calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease.” The McIntosh Law Firm will sponsor and lead a Company Team for the Lake Norman area Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 24, 2022 at Bellingham Park Mooresville. We invite others in the Lake Norman area community to walk with us, to donate funds to support Alzheimer’s research and, to encourage others to participate in this collective effort to find a cure for Alzheimer’s. To participate in a walk in your community, to join the McIntosh Law Firm team, or donate, please visit https://act.alz.org/iredell.

state planning is one of the most important topics to be discussed among your loved ones, whether you are 20 years old or 65 years old. Every person has an estate, whether you have $100 or $1,000,000. The most common estate planning document is a Last Will and Testament, more commonly known as a Will. A Will is a legal document that spells out all of your wishes regarding the distribution of your assets after you die. It is a way to make sure that everything you worked hard for all of your life goes to your loved ones. Failure to prepare a Will can result in chaos amongst your loved ones you leave behind. Additionally, your assets will have to be distributed “intestate,” meaning the state of North Carolina essentially assigns an estate plan for you. Having a Will gives you peace of mind and will only benefit your loved ones once you are gone. Even if you have a Will already prepared, you should always reevaluate your estate planning documents after any major life change. This includes, but is not limited to: • Purchasing new real or personal property • Marriage, separation, or divorce • Children or grandchildren • New bank accounts, IRAs, and 401-Ks • Purchasing new investment property • Starting a business • Inheriting assets from someone else Lastly, if your Will was prepared out of state, you want to make sure to speak with an estate planning attorney to review your documents and make sure it complies with North Carolina law.
