A New Season While it’s no secret summer is my favorite season, fall comes in as a close second. By the time October rolls around, I’m ready to retire my flip flops and start baking pumpkin muffins (I’ve never been a pumpkin spice latte sort of gal, though). Craft stores explode with ideas on how to make a harvest wreath. My older dog starts requesting the fireplace be turned on in the morning so he can bask in the warmth. My daughter asks for spiced apple cider from the grocery store. I notice the front porches in my neighborhood transform on my daily walks. A scarecrow and pumpkins of all shapes and sizes will appear, rugs and pillows on the porch swings and rockers start being replaced with ones that have shades of orange, gold, brown and seasonal gingham patterns. Inside our home, I pull out the scented candles, cozy throw blankets and update the pillows on our furniture to reflect autumn, and set out the fun Halloween décor we’ve collected over the years. On Nov. 1, that gets switched out to the “Give Thanks” signs. The mantle is redecorated at least three times before December is upon us. This year, in particular, I have a feeling most of us will embrace the chance to create new looks in our living spaces, the spaces that we’ve spent so much more time in this year, because it brings us a sense of familiarity and normalcy. Behind the scenes at CURRENTS, we’ve been working an update as well. You may notice the changes as you flip through this issue. While we still want to share the amazing people and places of the Lake Norman area, we’ve changed up the way we do it a bit. Our new contemporary design will showcase these stories with a modern twist, placing even more emphasis on the photography and art, bringing you these stories in a way that better reflects the Lake Norman area lifestyle. We hope you enjoy the new look as much as we do. We also bring you the comprehensive list of The Best of Lake Norman CURRENTS Awards in this issue, and we’d like to thank the more than 7,000 community members who voted on the selection. Check out the section starting on page 45 that features the best in dining, shopping, recreation and other valuable services. With Ship Me Style, Boat provides clients with affordable, hassle-free access to her personal shopping services by either delivering completely new looks or transforming the pieces already in their closets

into something new and exciting with the addition of a few new elements. The idea for Ship Me Style came to Boat organically. She found herself in her 20s, attending a plethora of bridal showers, bachelorette parties, and weddings— constantly searching for a new outfit for each special event. She noticed her friends doing the same, often scouring the internet for hours at a time to hunt down the perfect look. Boat’s overall mission and what she loves most about her business is being able to “deliver something that they wouldn’t typically choose for themselves.” Rather than sifting through tons of options, all her clients have to do is say “yes” or “no” to the looks she puts together. “It’s not just about people who can’t dress themselves,” she says, “it’s also for people who simply don’t have the time.” Ship Me Style offers six various packages depending on her clients’ needs and budgets. The most popular package is her “Let’s Take This Slow” package, which is personal styling for one specific event. She communicates with her clients (mostly via text, which is typically their preference for convenience) to learn the basics and then gets working from there with a digital vision board and preliminary shopping. FEAR Scarrigan Farms Enters a Decade of Scaring

Located in Mooresville, the 250-acre Carrigan Farms is 5th generation family-owned, and specializes in growing fruits and vegetables, educational field trips, apple and strawberry picking, and open swim in the natural quarry. But come October, for the past ten years, Carrigan becomes Scarrigan and, well, things get a little spooky. Scarrigan Farms isn’t for children under the age of 12, or the faint of heart. In fact, if you have heart problems, you’re encouraged not to attempt the haunted trail. This isn’t your G-rated goosebumps, it’s more like ‘G is for grisly.’ “Many people have had panic attacks and loss of bladder control, and some people have gotten lost for two or more hours in the maze,” says farm owner Kelly Carrigan. Brush-up on your phobias, because you’re probably going to experience all of them along the one-mile trail. Actors, props and sets are positioned to scare you and target specific fears, think everything from claustrophobia and coulrophobia to lygophobia and necrophobia. “Remember, it is acting, but it is designed to make you think it is real,” says Carrigan. “And, anything is fair game, including current political and social events. Actors work to terrify you; they 18

will not touch you, but may tell you you’re pretty and breathe down your neck, or a creepy clown may invite you into their van.” There’s spinning tunnels, loud noises, tight spaces, hills and valleys, and crawling and sliding. While you wait for your turn on the trail you can enjoy the bonfires and weenie roast, lighting effects and waterfall and a beautiful outdoor setting. In previous years, there have even been the occasional marriage proposal or wedding on the trail. Carrigan and the team focus on sensory deprivation and overexposure, making the experience not just about ‘jump scares,’ but an experiential fright. For example, the 3D maze is strobing sensory overexposure, whereas the pitch-black quite rooms are equally terrifying because of their lack of anything—absolutely nothing to see or hear. Anthony Ovitsky practices his golf swing and putting for hours daily at The Peninsula Club. His tournament schedule is set ahead of time. His golf coach is by his side and helps plot his next moves in golf. He has multiple tournament wins under his belt, including records for lowest score in a tournament. Is this a golfer trying to qualify for the PGA Tour or cut his teeth on the Korn Ferry circuit? No, not even close. He’s a 7-year-old junior golfer. He also happens to be the winner of the 2020 U.S. Kids Golf World Championship for his age group. Essentially, Anthony is the best 7-year old golfer in the world—and he lives right here in Lake Norman. Anthony may be 7 now, but his golf “career” started when he was barely walking. His dad Troy described Anthony’s start in golf as hitting pinecones in the backyard with a stick. Then he upgraded to the plastic $4.99 golf set and began making consistent contact with a plastic ball. By the ripe age of 3, Anthony graduated to a real set of golf clubs, and caught the eye of his current golf instructor, Linda Campbell. By the age of 4, Anthony was playing in the interclub tournaments through The Peninsula Club and could hold his own with the 7 and 8-year-old kids he was competing against. It was clear he had a special talent. But how far would it take him at such a young age?

Turns out, it’s taken him as far as any junior golfer could dream of going. Junior golfers from across the United States and world had to earn a spot to compete in the World Championship this past summer. Many children came, only to crack under the intense pressure. But for Anthony, it was clear he was able to thrive in the environment He turned in a scorecard with a 35-34-34 for 9 holes each day of the tournament and came home with the title as one of the best junior golfers in the world. Anthony trains daily, whether it’s practicing at the club or exercising at Champions Sports Performance. He has the determination most adults don’t even have. At the age of 7, it’s hard to know how far Anthony will take his love for golf. But one thing is certain, we have a world-class winner right here in Lake Norman.

Lincoln County’s oldest surviving home once hosted an iron furnace You may be surprised to learn that just west of Denver is the oldest surviving home in Lincoln County, Vesuvius Furnace. Constructed in 1792 by General Joseph Graham, the property includes the remains of an old iron furnace that operated well into the 1800s. Tradition says that the name came from Italy’s Mount Vesuvius, which erupted and belched thick smoke from 1631 to 1944. Graham was prominent in politics and industry. He served as an officer in the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Graham was a voting delegate when North Carolina ratified the United States Constitution in 1789. His son William served as North Carolina governor, Secretary of the Navy and a candidate for vice president.

The home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 and still maintains most of its original structure and architecture. The property now operates as Vesuvius Vineyards, a wedding/ event venue and wine vineyard. Jay and Christy Thompson operate the venue, which has been in Jay’s family since the 1940s. It seems fitting that the first wedding hosted was Jay and Christy’s own in 2009. “We asked the family if we could get married on the property,” Jay recalls. A vision blossomed from there. Vesuvius hosts 40 wedding and 10-15 other events annually, though gatherings were suspended temporarily because of COVID-19.

The iron industry appeared in Lincoln County in the late 1700s. By 1849, the county was a leading North Carolina iron producer. Nearby Iron Station is named for its history as an iron mining town with a train station.

The home stands in the middle of 350+ acres of private property. Wedding guests can tour the historic home, stroll the vineyard or explore the creek with its covered bridge. The vineyard is in its infancy, with grape harvest not expected for several years.

The furnace super heated rock to extract molten iron. Some iron was cast on the property into wagon wheel rims, horseshoes, plows, chain and mattocks. Other iron was cast and sold as bars.

Take Control of Your Breast Health

What you need to know about your first mammogram I was a bit young (in my mid-30s) when my physician suggested I get a baseline mammogram (or, x-ray of the breast) due to dense breast tissue and a few cysts that needed to be checked out. My first experience with the process was to get a diagnostic mammogram. Lucky for me, everything turned out fine, but I learned the importance of being proactive with my health. According to the American College of Radiology, most women should have that baseline mammogram (offered in 2D or 3D) at age 40, and then plan to schedule them annually. Screening mammograms are normally administered to women with no obvious symptoms of breast cancer, while diagnostic mammograms provide a more detailed-x-ray of the breast using specialized techniques. What to expect at the first appointment If possible, you should dress in clothing that is easy to remove from the waist up, says Meredith Ballard, Mammography Supervisor at the Iredell Women’s Health Center. Limit wearing large, dangling earrings and necklaces, and remove any powders or deodorants before arriving. Depending on where you receive your mammogram, the visit will include talking with a technician about your breast health, including history of previous biopsies or surgeries, hormone replacement and history of breast cancer in your family, says Ballard. The technologist will then explain the mammogram and position you for each image, which is typically two images of each breast. Extra images may be necessary. The total mammogram visit will last anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes, and for a screening

mammogram you can expect to receive your results in the mail within eight to ten working days. Additional scans or biopsies Your results will be sent to your provider, as well as to you by mail. Ballard knows it is difficult to not be nervous if you are called back or have a biopsy. But, she says, there are many benign processes that occur in the breast and additional imaging is not uncommon. There are times a provider needs to do additional imaging just because the compression was different from the years prior. According to the American Cancer Society, half of women who have annual mammograms over a 10-year period will have a false positive at some point. “As a breast cancer survivor, I can’t overstress the importance of regular screening and not putting off a yearly mammogram,” says Lori Sumner, PA-C with Iredell Family Medicine. “Most of the time, mammograms are able to pick up small masses that we cannot feel yet. This allows even earlier detection of breast cancer which improves outcome and overall survival. “In addition to mammograms, the importance of a monthly self-breast exam is equally as important,” she says. “Breast cancer appears to be affecting more women at a younger age. You are never too young to begin monthly self-breast exams. The most important thing is that if you ever notice a change in your breast tissue, be sure to let your healthcare provider know. A thorough history and physical exam will help to determine the next steps that should be taken. You should never be alone in that decision making.”

The Best of The Lake

(At Least On Paper) Sharing lessons from a few of my “BEST” stories through the years ... by Mike Savicki

Every year I look forward to reading CURRENTS’ “Best of the Lake” issue more than almost any other. I love learning about the companies, products, services, and events (plus so much more) that stood out just a bit more this past year. Having lived at the lake now for more than 25 years, some of the winners are familiar yet some are new even to me. As I read through both the nominees and the winners, I’m reminded how special a place this region really is and I’m grateful that I get to call it home. So, to go along with this year’s “Best of” list, I’m happy to share just a few of the stories I have most enjoyed researching and writing. Cancer doesn’t play favorites and it doesn’t care if you were a seven-year pro with the Miami Dolphins, had a Pro Bowl year in 1968, fought the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI, and won the Vince Lombardi Trophy a year later under Coach Don Shula as a member of the NFL’s only perfect team. Cancer can ruin a life, but it doesn’t have to. Sitting with Karl Noonan in 2011, sure, I learned about football but more importantly I learned how love, hope, and happiness can make a life complete. Doctors had to remove seven ribs from Noonan in order to extract a soccer ball sized tumor from his body and from that, he says, he became stronger in mind, body, and soul. Karl Noonan showed me how to appreciate life, no matter what challenge(s) might come with it, and how every day can be another day in paradise. Wanting to learn more about how 40 cars navigate turns, initiate passes, and even dodge wrecks on NASCAR tracks at speeds often in excess of 200 mph, I connected with longtime Hendrick Motorsports spotter Earl Barban in 2013. Two hours into our interview, I had learned that Big Earl, who was (and still is) considered the sport’s best “eyes in the sky” (he has spotted for 28

7-time NASCAR. Cup Champion, Jimmie Johnson, since 2006) formerly had jobs as a bartender, brick mason, electrician, shuttle driver, produce manager, Christmas tree salesman, and much more, but we hadn’t yet even touched on racing. When I tried to make a transition, Big Earl then shared stories about motorcycling across the USA, his dream of living on the beach, and how he often arrives at the track one or two days before anyone else just so he can meet the fans and soak up the culture. We finally did talk about racing, but I don’t recall any of those points even making it into my story and that’s just fine. Big Earl’s love and zest for life and living is something we should all be so lucky to discover in ourselves. I never thought writing about a meatball could be life-changing but, then again, I had never met Giovanni Pelligrino. Rolling into the Pellegrino Trattoria a few years ago with a pen, pad, recorder, and a bit of skepticism (what kind of person would promote a meatball I kept saying to myself), Gio greeted me like he does everyone—as a longtime friend and family member— and promptly launched into sharing the story of how North Carolina’s biggest meatball became a reality. I learned about nearly one dozen relatives across three generations from Manhattan to New Jersey to North Carolina, and how it basically took a 24-oz. Italian creation packed with multiple meats and special sauces to slow a boy and bring a family together around a dinner table. If food is a metaphor for life, may we laugh, smile, and find joy as we fill our bellies, hearts, and souls alongside those we love and cherish the most. So, with a nod to Karl, Big Earl, and Giovanni, here’s to this year’s winners and here’s to those who, through doing what they love, make our lives and our community just that much better. After all, isn’t that what life is all about?

With more than 1,000 business members, the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce keeps Executive Vice President and COO Sylvia Spury busy, but she has never been one to shy away from hard work. The Massachusetts native and her seven siblings grew up watching their mother meet all their needs with limited means, including sewing their clothes and working at night while they slept. Their father worked “from sun up to sundown.” While pursuing a banking career in Massachusetts, Spury took a detour into Chamber work, which she saw as an opportunity to collaborate with local businesses and town government while enjoying the variety of a job description that included event planning, fundraising, and workshops.

Heading south

After a particularly tough New England winter, Spury and her husband Dave sold their house, packed their belongings in a trailer, and headed south. The NASCAR fans set their sights on Race City USA, where they had enjoyed many visits with Sylvia’s twin sister, who had already relocated to Mooresville. “We had no home and no jobs, but we had faith and it all worked out for the best,” says Spury. When a position opened at the Mooresville Chamber of Commerce, Spury took the opportunity, which turned into a 19year tenure where she served as special events coordinator and community development manager. In 2019, Spury accepted her role at the Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce. She says her favorite thing about the job is the people.

Working together

“I get to work with and for small business owners, medical professionals, education leaders, presidents of corporations, non-profit agencies, law enforcement and folks in the community,” says Spury. Although no two days are alike and her plan for the day may get derailed before lunch, Spury makes a point to return all calls and emails by the end of the day. “Communication, respect, and common courtesy are very important,” she says.

When it comes to joining the Chamber, “business owners should ask themselves three questions,” says Spury. “First, is your business the best it can be, or could it be a little better? Second, are you and your employees the most proficient at what you do, or could you benefit from the professional development we offer? The last question is whether you have all the friends and customers you need, or whether you have room for more?”

No slowing down

Spury practices what she preaches. Whether she’s attending the US Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organizational Management and Professional Development or completing the Mooresville Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy, Spury never stops learning. Just as the learning never stops, Spury’s commitment to the community knows no bounds. As a founding member of the North Mecklenburg Exchange Club, Spury participates in military appreciation projects, youth support programs and community service. The owner of German shepherd Maverick and cats Ginger and Sampson supports Lake Norman Lucky Cats and the Iredell County Animal Shelter. Spury has also been a Notary Public for 35 years and received the 2019 Chairman’s Distinguished Service Award for her support of the Chamber’s Women’s Conference, Diversity Program, and Women’s Networking Group. When she’s not serving the community in her professional or volunteer work, Spury cherishes the time she spends with Dave, her husband of more than 45 years, their two daughters, and three grandchildren. “I love what I do!” says Spury. “I am honored to have the support, recognition and ability to serve the Lake Norman area.”

omen make up approximately 19 percent of the work force at car dealerships, according to the National Automotive Dealers Association. Most are in support positions and, of those who are in sales, there is an 88 percent turnover rate. At Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, which offers new and preowned vehicle sales, women make up 21 percent of the staff, and the female members of their sales staff have been working there as long as 17 years. The support staff for all departments includes strong female representation, with team members who have been with the dealership as long as 28 years. In the service lane, women have been traditionally

underrepresented, and in some cases, completely absent. Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram has two female service advisors, one of which has been with the dealership for over six years. Women tend to be very successful at communication with customers and building long-term relationships with service customers, though there can be some resistance and skepticism regarding their automotive knowledge, the ladies of Lake Norman hold their own with their male counterparts, working hard to establish trust and rapport with their customers. Robin Smith-Salzman, co-owner of Lake Norman CDJR, attributes the longevity of employment with not only establishing a female-friendly atmosphere long before it was

the trend in the still maledominated automotive field, but with creating an overall sense of inclusion and diversity among employees, without regard to race, gender, age or orientation. Female staff members have a wide variety of training and backgrounds. Several have BS/BA degrees, as well as certifications in their specific areas. Sales team members receive ongoing training and certification from FCA LLC on all new vehicle models/features; service/parts team members are primarily trained on the job in all related software and systems necessary, as well as regarding proper procedures; business office/support staff also receive job-specific training, some are certified as a notary public. Over the years, the dealership has received

hen retail stores were forced to close in mid-March, during what is normally the busiest time of year for MINE by sandy, Sandy Bowers had a plan. She prepared her team to work from home and enrolled her full-time stylists in online curriculums. She coached her social media and website team to curate a library of merchandise photos, taken days before closing, and ultimately provided content for the entire eight weeks of closure. Her team remained employed the entire time they were closed, and two employees actually earned sales professional certifications through online courses. Bowers also championed virtual trunk shows by collaborating with select NY and CA based brands to deliver merchandise directly from the brands to her customers. Bowers created a Facebook and Instagram Live series to host the trunk shows and the brands connected their websites to minebysandy.shop to facilitate the sales. This innovative collaboration kept the designers, their brands and her shops sustained during the weeks they were closed. The Live series drew the attention of the N.Y. and L.A. fashion industry and was recognized in Women’s Wear Daily on April 21. Bowers founded MINE by sandy in 2008 and operates a large shop at Exit 30 (referred to as the flagship store), with a much smaller shop just steps away from Davidson College. She strives to have something beautiful for everyone, including ecologically sound and made in the USA brands such as Raquel Allegra and more. She

The owners of the condo have young grandchildren, so Savio found tables that were childfriendly as well as aesthetically pleasing. The bottoms of the tables in the living space have removable trays for more functionality.

When Lori Savio, owner of Home Heart & Soul in Cornelius, first met with the owners looking to renovate their newly-purchased lakefront condominium, she listened to their ideas on what they envisioned for their new home. “For me, it’s about guiding my customers to get the look they want but also have them involved in the process,” says Savio, who offers design services through her storefront. They began brainstorming in late summer of 2019 and finished the updates to the three bedroom, two and a half bath condominium a few months later.

The Shiplap

One of the design elements the owners hoped to incorporate was shiplap. Savio had it installed in the dining room and then painted a matte navy. Savio offers a line of solid wood furniture through her design services and the dining table and two head chairs came from this collection.

Seating

The owners have a large extended family so they needed a dining space that could seat a lot of people. Savio selected woven fiberglass chairs for the table and matched the finish on the table to the frame of the chairs. Two different style chairs were added to each end of the table for contrast.

Inspired Tile

Savio says one of the biggest changes to the living room space was the removal of a two-story rock fireplace with a dark wood mantle, brass enclosure and seated hearth. The new design includes a blue glazed tile with a herringbone pattern and black fireplace frame.

The world of wine is huge. It’s expansive and doesn’t have to be expensive. Dig into it a little bit and you’ll find some hidden treasures—attractively priced wines that are spectacular. There are many ways to go about exploring. For me, it’s always fun to drop into the Corkscrew Wine Shoppe & Bar in Huntersville’s Birkdale Village for a conversation with a glass of wine or two. There’s a large selection of wines by the glass and your exploration gets even wider if you’re there with some friends and can split a bottle. On a recent afternoon I was drawn to a glass of wine from the Lodi region of California. Lodi is overshadowed by its more famous brethren from the coastal areas of the state. Contrary to what you see on TV shows, coastal California is pretty chilly, especially around the wine-producing areas. Not a beaten track in sight, Lodi is 100 miles inland from the San Francisco Bay and it’s hot, very hot. Lodi’s soils are different, too. Napa valley, for example, has soil that is predominately volcanic. Lodi soils were formed thousands of years ago. Two major rivers originating in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range feed the Lodi appellation. They have delivered soils rich in granite-based minerals.

All of this comes through in Lodi’s wines. I particularly like the region’s deep, powerful red wines. They have an intense, inky, black color and there’s a concentrated aroma and flavor of lots of different fruits The wine that I chose to sit next to at Corkscrew was a Petite Sirah

from, where else? Lodi. Petite Sirah grapes, compared to most others, are small— that’s why the grape is called, “Petite.” Going back to high school geometry, the smaller the grape, the greater the ratio of skin to grape juice. What that means in wine terms is a greater contribution of grape skin to the wine. The particular wine I opted for had been aged in French and American oak barrels. That allows the wine to settle. It concentrates the fruit flavors, as well as rounding it out with contributions from the oak barrels. Greater flavor intensity and lots of oomph. Just what I wanted that afternoon. As well as the opportunity to go wine exploring, there’s another factor that draws me to Corkscrew. Along with the wine, there’s an array of cheese and charcuterie platters— small dishes that are created with wines in mind. With my Petite Sirah I selected a Red Wine Cheese Platter, designed specifically for Corkscrew’s assortment of red wines. There’s a similar choice for white wines. Continuing on a wine exploration quest could lead you to another red wine dish, a dark chocolate ganache in a dark chocolate shell and infused with Zinfandel. Very neat. I never tire of seeking out new wines, regions and grapes that are not too well known. Apart from the fun and the tasting, you inevitably come across those hidden treasures. Off the beaten track and under the radar you’ll find wonderful and satisfying wines at really reasonable prices.

Peanut Butter Cups Spreadable peanut butter was invented in 1890 by a physician as a high protein food source for people with poor teeth that couldn’t chew well. Later, companies began selling it as a premium product targeted towards the upper class, but when that market became saturated they added sugar to give it an appeal to children. Harry Burnett Reese (who worked for Hershey’s) invented the Reese’s peanut butter cup in the roaring 20’s by pairing peanut butter with chocolate. For my take on the treats, using dark 70 percent or above chocolate can actually be a healthy afternoon treat. You’d be NUTS not to try this!

Instructions Melt chocolate in a dutch oven on low heat or over boiling water until just melted. Remove and if using large paper or silicone cups spoon one ounce of melted chocolate in the bottom of each cup or half an ounce in the smaller cups and freeze five minutes until firm. While chocolate is freezing mix peanut butter, vanilla, and sugar in a small bowl. Spread a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter mixture on each chocolate cup and then pour the remaining chocolate equally over the peanut butter in the cups. Freeze for 15 minutes then serve or chill to store. Makes five large peanut butter cups or 10 small ones. 66

The Hofstaetters move from Bavaria The Hofstaetters hail from Bad Reichenhall, Germany, near Salzburg, Austria. After visiting the Lake Norman area twice in 2016, the couple decided they liked it so much, they wanted to make a big change—and planned their move to North Carolina. “The people are friendly, and the Lake Norman area is just beautiful; I think it’s just perfect,” he says. “In one direction, you have the mountains, and in the other direction, you have the sea. What more do you want? Of course, we also wanted to set up our own restaurant to bring Bavarian food closer to the people here.” In May 2018, they relocated to Cornelius with their children and opened their restaurant in Troutman on October 23. 68

“We found this location by chance, and the beer garden immediately stood out,” he adds.

Authentic regional dishes Adamant about not Americanizing their menu, this chef with 20plus years’ experience serves the flavorful dishes of his homeland. As Dominik notes, food preparation varies in different regions of Germany. “The best example is meatball for me,” he says. “The meatball tastes different in Bavaria, northern Germany, Austria or even Switzerland. But the base is always the same.” Some items on their menu are revised family recipes. His grandma had a huge impact on Dominik in the kitchen, and “she passed along some old tricks few learn anymore,” he says. Grandma and Austria help shape his cuisine. “Calories are not counted here, and I’m the best example” he laughs. “Austria naturally also has an influence in my kitchen because we grew up very close to there.” Their diverse menu introduces everything Bavarian, from “appetizers” (including homemade pretzels) and “cold dishes” to “hot Bavaria” and “main dishes.” As Dominik says, “there’s something

for everyone. And everything is cooked fresh after it has been ordered.” Some of their bestsellers are Jager schnitzel, Swiss Yummy (pan-fried pork stuffed with ham and cheese) and homemade spaetzle. Rotating specials include Sauerbraten, Tafel spitz and Zwiebelrostbraten.

Imports beer from Germany “What would a Bavarian restaurant be without Bavarian beer?” he asks. “We have the beer from Hofbräuhaus Munich. We have draft beers that change with the season. Our guests love the beer.” And for those who prefer wine with their meal, they work closely with Troutman’s Daveste Vineyards. “We think it’s great to have a winery just around the corner,” he adds.

Save room for Anita’s desserts While Dominik is the food maestro, Anita bakes her moist specialty cakes and pastries daily. These change weekly and include Apple Strudel, Bee Sting Cake and Vienna Sacher Cake. She also makes homemade eclairs filled with cream and fresh fruits or homemade egg nog.

Self-care has taken on a whole new meaning in the past six months. For me, I’ve had to juggle working from home with the three other members of my family. On top of this, there’s caring for two dogs, cooking a whole lot of meals, trying to keep our house tidy and taking on extra creative projects. There are plenty of days I’ve felt depleted, and then my brain decides to kick into overdrive when it’s time to go to sleep, leaving me feeling frazzled and generally tired.

The Self-Love Package included a scalp massage, rose quartz crystal comb treatment, a floral facial steam and a rose mud face mask accompanied by a restorative music session. I got to choose from a variety of essential oils for the scalp massage, during which Withrow explained that caring for the scalp is just as important as treating and conditioning the hair, which is something I had never thought of. The combination of massage, oils and the rose quartz comb was a relaxing way to start the appointment.

So when I got an e-mail from the owners of The Temple, a studio in Cornelius specializing in self-care, the concept appealed to me. I checked out the packages offered there and zeroed in on one called the “Self-Love Package.” Thinking it would be a good way to wind down the week, I made the appointment on a Friday afternoon to start off my weekend.

I then enjoyed the soothing facial steam, had time to concentrate on some mediative breathing and moved into another room for the facial portion of the appointment. As Withrow applied the face mask, which she creates herself using all-natural ingredients, Minor played a few different instruments for an additional layer of comfort. Afterwards, I told Withrow that I had once received a facial that left me feeling as if my skin was on fire and appreciated that the rose mud face mask left me only feeling refreshed.

The Temple is owned and operated by Brittany Withrow, a holistic cosmetologist and teacher of the healing arts including yoga and meditation and Jordan Minor, a devotional musician and healing arts practitioner and. It’s located in downtown Cornelius, and the space is calming and quiet. When I arrived, Minor and Withrow both greeted me and explained what my appointment would include, and I was happy to see I had the space all to myself. 72
