year, but … something inevitably derails us. Our good intentions to eat less, exercise more, cut down on work, make family a priority … learn a new skill, kick an old habit … and the list goes on and on. Start Small. Baby steps count and most resolutions fail because we set too high a standard or goal for ourselves. Too many people use New Year’s resolutions as a catchall for grand additions to their already overly stacked To-Do lists. Don’t reach for the impossible—set small, achievable goals and reward yourself accordingly.

Make Your Goals Specific. Many times, people don’t keep their self-imposed promises because they are too general in nature. For example, instead of saying, “I am going to lose weight this year,” get speci c on how many pounds, realistically, you can lose in a month and then set up other activities that will support your goal— such as healthy meal preps, implementing a daily caloric intake chart, and using a pedometer to track your steps.

Pat Yourself on the Back. Place visual reminders of your successes all around you— write down pounds lost or steps walked and post it on your mirror; as you get out of debt, stick your bills marked PAID on your fridge; or hang a photo of that dream car or bucketlist vacation you’ve been working so hard towards… you get the picture. Visuals are not only a great motivator, but they make us feel proud of our accomplishments and that is a big key to successful New Year’s resolutions.

Time Is On Your Side …

But Start NOW! Don’t get overzealous and expect great things in a week or two. Give yourself time to see some progress. Most New Year’s resolutions aren’t kept because we tend to want immediate results. Also, get started right away—no procrastinating! e whole point is New Year, New Start, New You … so let’s get going! w
