New projects coming to Walmart site

A new emergency health care center is ready for construction, and a self-storage facility is planned for outparcels surrounding the Walmart Super Center in Lutz.

They will join the new Famous Tate appliance store, which is under construction in front of the discount retail store, on a parcel off of Land O’ Lakes Boulevard.

Pasco County commissioners, in October, approved changes to a longstanding master plan for development of the entire site, located on a large triangular swath of land between Land O’ Lakes and North Dale Mabry Highway.

The Nashville-based New Port Richey Hospital Inc., a subsidiary of HCA Holdings Inc., is building an approximately 10,800square-foot emergency health facility on a parcel adjacent to the Dale Mabry entrance.

Initial permits were issued in December according to a sign posted on the site.

New Port Richey Hospital Inc. also owns the Medical Center of Trinity in New Port Richey.The seller of the parcel was Hagman Properties Inc., and Canaan Development Corporation, according to county records.

Area talent show gives youth a time to shine

Long before “America’s Got Talent” began attracting the nation’s attention, a local talent show began offering youths a chance to take center stage.

And, efforts are now gearing up for this year’s 34th annual “Spotlight on Talent” competition.

Winners of this talent show won’t walk away with a million-dollar prize or a show in Las Vegas, but they won’t walk away empty-handed, either.

The regional competition awards more than $4,000 in cash prizes and trophies to winners in several age categories.

The event, organized by the Heritage Arts Center Association, features contestants who have made their way through auditions and have been selected as finalists to compete at two shows.

The competition also awards a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior who lives in Pasco County.

Because of the community support of the “Moonlight and Ivory” concerts, as well as the “Spotlight” contest, organizers have added the scholarship that will go to the Pasco senior with the highest total scores from the finals judges.

The March 11 event is organized by the Heritage Arts Center Association.

The acts feature finalists from several hundred contestants who compete during an audition.

Contestants come from throughout Pasco County, as well as Tampa, Brooksville, St. Petersburg and other communities.

Talents run the gamut, too.

There are vocalists, dancers, instrumental musicians, piano players, baton twirlers, bands, gymnasts and other entertainers seeking to take home a prize.

There are several age categories. There also are categories for groups and for solos.

A student may enter as a soloist and as a member of a group.

Judges for the competition come from Central Florida.

This year’s auditions will be on Feb. 11.

Participants are judged primarily on talent, but also on stage presence and appropriate appearance.

The final competitions will be March 11 at Center for the Arts at Wesley Chapel, 30651 Wells Road in Wesley Chapel.

The first act, which begins at noon, will

feature the younger finalists.The second act, which begins at 7 p.m., will features the older competitors.

Admission is $12 for adults for one show, or $20 for both. For students through high school, admission is $6 for one show, or $10 for both. Children under age 5 are admitted free.

In 2014, someone posted a message on Mosquito’s marquee board that Hooters planned to open there in 2015. Hooters’ representatives quickly scotched the speculation.

The lakefront property has seen two restaurants come and go in the past decade.

Mosquito Bar & Grill opened in 2012, soon after the popular Rapscallions shut down.

But, Mosquito’s menu of gator bites, fish tacos, barbecue pulled pork and countryfried venison met with mixed reviews. Hot wings – a signature dish for Rapscallions – stayed on the menu, but with a milder sauce.

Despite its 24-month hiatus and its new venue, the 37th annual GFWC Lutz Arts & Crafts Show has been declared a success by event organizers.

The festival, on Dec. 3 and Dec. 4, was at Keystone Preparatory High School in Odessa, on Dec. 3 and 4. Previously, it took place at Lake Park.

But, the event was cancelled in 2015 because of a sinkhole at Lake Park in Lutz, that forced the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club to find a new location.

The club subsequently signed a five-year contract with Keystone Prep to have the festival on the school’s nearly 60-acre property.

The move, it appears, paid off.

Though revenue figures from the twoday event weren’t disclosed, the woman’s club is “delighted with the results,” said Pat Serio, head of public relations for the club.

The festival usually draws more than 30,000 patrons, including many from out-ofstate. It’s typically the largest annual fundraiser for the club, which gives back to the community in the form of college scholarships and donations to local charities.

New restaurant coming to Land O’ Lakes

A new restaurant will replace the former Mosquito Bar & Grill, a waterfront restaurant on Lake Bell that closed down nearly four years ago.

Renovations are underway to upgrade the kitchen and modernize the building at 4422 Land O’ Lakes Blvd.

“We don’t know what the concept will be,” said Mike Faehner, a Clearwater-based attorney.

Faehner is listed on state records as the registered agent for the property’s owner, 4422 LOL Blvd. LLC. Market research is being completed, Faehner said.

Whatever the final concept, the restaurant will be locally owned and operated.

Sugarcane festival adds spicy twist

For the seventh straight year, the Raising Cane Festival returns to the Pioneer Florida Museum in Dade City.

The sweet celebration, however, now comes with a spicy twist.

The one-day festival, which highlights the traditional method of milling sugarcane into syrup, will include its first-ever chili cook-off.

The event is set for Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 15602 Pioneer Museum Road.

The International Chili Society (ICS), an organization that sanctions nearly 200 chili cook-offs worldwide each year, will sanction the cook-off, expected to feature at least 10 professional chili competitors.

The contest was added, in part, to help boost attendance, said event coordinator Brenda Minton.

“I was always looking for something else to add to it that might bring in a different crowd — along with the ones that we had,” Minton said.

Furthermore, she said the cook-off “adds credibility” to the annual Raising Cane Festival.

“People come from all over to participate in it,” Minton said, referring to the chili cookoff competitors. They do that, she said, “because they want to get points, so that at the end of the year they can win prizes from ICS.” The ICS cook-off includes three categories: Chili Verde, Salsa and Traditional Red Chili. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in each category.

Local chili-makers, too, will get a chance to display their culinary talents.

They’ll compete in a separate cook-off, battling for the Steve Otto’s People’s Choice Award, where festivalgoers cast votes for their favorite recipes.

Meanwhile, the staples of the sugarcane festival remain.

In addition to a homemade cane syrup breakfast, attendees can partake in a syruptasting contest, where samples from 24 different manufacturers are judged on taste, color, pour and clarity.

Other planned activities barrel train rides and a petting zoo, as well as cane pole and iron skillet tossin’.

Also, live entertainment will be provided by the Crackerbillys, the Sara Rose Band and Those Unscrupulous Sunspots.

Yet, the event’s main course is still the old-timey cane-making demonstration, hosted by museum experts.

Wilbur Dew, who’s produced cane syrup for more than 20 years, is one of the scheduled demonstrators.

The 83-year-old said sugarcane is often cut this time of year, because “cool weather causes it to sweeten up.”

Using a technique that dates back several hundred years, the entire syrup-making process takes about six hours to complete, he said.

Sugarcane is first grinded into cane juice, using either a mule or tractor-powered mill.

“We have a mill that looks a little bit like a washing machine ringer,” Dew said. “It’s two or three steel rollers that the cane stalk is pushed through.

“The mill may be a vertical mill that’s powered by a mule walking around in a circle, or it may be a horizontal mill that’s powered by a flat-belt tractor.”

Once squeezed, cane juice is then boiled in the museum’s 80-gallon kettle.

The process usually yields 8 gallons to 9 gallons of syrup, Dew said.

To create a desired texture, Dew noted the ideal boiling temperature is around 227 degrees Fahrenheit.

“The temperature determines viscosity,” he explained.“Whereas maple syrup pours real thin, we want cane syrup to be a little thicker. Some would say:‘We want it to stand up as tall as a biscuit on a plate.’”

And, unlike some other sugary substances, Dew said cane syrup is “an all-around good sweetener.”

“I much prefer it to maple syrup,” he said.

“You can put it on pancakes, your biscuits.

It’s really anything that you would use brown sugar on — some people use it in their ham preserving process.”

Museum experts say cane syrup was a routine part of pioneers’ diets, especially those settled in southern states, like Florida.

“In the Deep South, sugar was a commodity that you had to buy,” Dew said,“but you could make syrup and it would sweeten your coffee, or your tea.”

“It was just, in general, a common sweetener,” he added.

Event admission is $5 per person, with free admission for children age 5 and younger.

The Pioneer Florida Museum is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Florida’s pioneer heritage. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Campaign 2016: Something to talk about

E

veryone knows the old saying, the one designed to keep peace among restless kinfolk: Never discuss religion or politics.

Sandy Graves knows it, too, and spurns it at every turn.

“If it weren’t for religion and politics,” she says breezily,“I wouldn’t have anything to talk about.”

This, as anyone who knows the first lady of Land O’ Lakes, is not entirely true. She can do hours on the history of her community, or what goes into the construction of a small amphitheater.

Even so, politics and religion, and especially how they intertwine, are her preferred milieu. Nonetheless, in anticipation of the completion of a historically wild ride, Graves is willing to take a conditional vow of silence.

It was either that, or, to affix a fitting ending to her efforts on behalf of a certain billionaire reality TV star and developer, pay close to $700 a night for a hotel room anywhere near a Washington D.C. Metro stop.

“With a four-night minimum,” Graves says.

Yikes.

Yes, Sandy Graves, accompanied by amiable husband Steve, is going to the (even now, mind-boggling) inauguration of Donald J.Trump as the 45th president of the United States. In exchange for free lodgings with her niece, a pleasant progressive who lives in Alexandria,Virginia, and supported Hillary Clinton, she says, “I am willing to bite my tongue.”

That will be her niece’s loss, because as pleased as she is about the election’s outcome, Graves nonetheless emerged from the campaign with utterly delightful tales that have next to nothing with partisan politics.

First, meet Liam, a 7-year-old Wesley Chapel lad who greeted Graves, who’d arrived in response to a request for campaign signs, as if mounted on springs.

Graves rapped, the door swung open, and there was Liam, eyes wide and bright, and bouncing — boing-boing-boing — as he summoned his grandmother.

“Grammie! It’s a Trump supporter!

Grammie!”

Weeks later, after Election Day, Sandy and Liam happened across each other, and the boy asked why she hadn’t responded to his email.

“You sent me an email?” she answered.“I don’t think I got it.”

Shrugging, but without missing beat, he said,“Hillary must have deleted it.”

Speaking of whom, Graves noted two errors — one of commission, the other of

omission — she considers critical to Clinton’s defeat.

Evidence of the first adorns the back windshield of her Kia SUV, a sticker that proclaims the driver to be an “Adorable Deplorable,” in response to Clinton condemning Trump backers as society’s dregs.

Graves rejected Clinton’s characterization as “worse than anything Mitt Romney said about the ‘47 percent’” — the 2012 GOP nominee’s assessment of the recipient class that had no incentive to vote for him.

Also like the 47-percenters, the so-called Deplorables rallied around their new-found celebrity. “We’re deplorable?” Graves says.

“Fine.We’ll take it.”

Meanwhile, GOP activists worked their precincts like bees, linked to their hives by sharply designed mobile apps.This, Graves noted, was in stark contrast to Clinton campaigners who, when they finally did arrive, lugged old-fashioned paper logbooks.

This, too, boosted Republican hopes.“At last,” Graves said,“our technology is ahead of theirs.” In her gratitude, she couldn’t help wondering how the Clinton campaign could have mislaid so much of what President Obama had proven correct about getting out the vote. It was almost as though Republicans and Democrats had switched playbooks.

All of that was history, however, on Election Day when, in a quirk of scheduling, the Graves found themselves in the North Carolina Smoky Mountains for Steve’s annual camp retreat with college buddies.

“If we’re here,” Sandy told him, “we’re working.”

Assigned a precinct in deep blue Cedar Mountain, between Brevard and the South Carolina state line, they met secretive ticketsplitters — shy Trump voters who planned otherwise to tick Democrat boxes — a couple their age who were first-time voters “because they said they’d never felt needed before, and the aforementioned snake woman.

She rolled up in “a nice Cadillac,” Graves recalls, and asked workers to keep an eye on it. She needed to keep the motor running and the heater on, because it was cold, and she’d brought her baby python curled up in its carrier.

“He goes everywhere with me,” she explained. “He sleeps in bed with me. Of course, my husband doesn’t like it. But, that’s the way it goes.”

“Then,” Graves says,“we asked her if she wanted a Republican sample ballot, and she gave us a look like we were nuts.”

Politics and religion. And snakes. And 7year-old boys with zingers. That was Campaign 2016 in a nutshell.

The lesson here? Be careful what you decide people shouldn’t talk about.

We Care Food Pantry online auction We Care Food Pantry, which services Homosassa, and also shares food with more than 30 agencies in Pasco, Citrus, Hernando, Marion and Sumter counties, will host an online auction fundraiser from Jan. 17 to Feb. 28.

There will be 250 items up for bid, and categories include sports memorabilia, toys, jewelry, entertainment, water sporting activities, sporting goods, small appliances, music memorabilia, home goods, restaurant certificates, gift certificates, clothing, art and more.

All proceeds will go to the We Care Food Pantry, a nonprofit organization that aims to help solve the hunger problem affecting thousands of neighbors.

The Maternity Suites at Oak Hill Hospital announced the delivery of twins born in both 2016 and 2017. On Dec. 31, 2016 at 11:43 p.m., baby girl Yulliana came into the world.

She was followed by her twin brother, Zane, on Jan. 1 at one minute after midnight.

Even so, the festival’s future looks bright at Keystone Prep.

Additional space, an updated food booth layout and ample parking were highlighted as the top amenities in Odessa.

“The bottom line,” Serio said,“was everyone loved the new location. We had great feedback from the public and from the vendors; our club women found it very nice.”

Compared to the former Lake Park location, event parking at Keystone Prep “seemed to be more convenient” for festivalgoers, Serio said.

“I just think it was far easier for them,” she said.

However, she added there were “a few instances” of parking traffic buildup, due to the main entrance being on a two-lane road.

In fact, the woman’s club is organizing committee meetings to brainstorm possible ideas.

“They’ve taken copious notes,” Serio said, “and all of our members wrote in surveys and feedback.”

She noted there might be room to add even more vendors, which roughly totals 350.

Meantime, the woman’s club is gearing up for its annual Flea Market on March 4 and March 5 at the Historic Old Lutz School.

Preparations for that will begin in midFebruary.

Within a year, the property’s owners, C of Pasco Inc., headed to foreclosure.

The restaurant shuttered in 2012.

Mosquito buzzed to life soon after, but its short life ended in 2013.

The building has sat empty since then.

Current property owners bought the site from Centennial Bank in December 2014, according to county records.

A new restaurant finally is on the way.

StorKwik Self Storage made inquiries with county planners about building up to 100,000 square feet of storage space on a parcel across from Famous Tate, by the Land O’ Lakes entrance, according to county records.

The new development isn’t expected to increase traffic, according to a new traffic analysis.

Under county code, the self-storage facility is considered retail though it generates little traffic, and the storage facility is counted as office space, said land use attorney Joel Tew, who represented the properties’ sellers.

“Essentially, it’s the same traffic as before, with no new net (daily) trips,”Tew said.

However, a traffic signal and turn lane will be installed at the Dale Mabry entrance into Walmart. Developers and county officials had sought approvals for the signal for years,Tew said.

The Florida Department of Transportation recently approved the signal, Tew added.

The eastern entrance off Land O’ Lakes Boulevard already has a traffic signal.

The outparcels at the site were ready for development for years, but for the stalled economy,Tew said.

“They simply sat there languishing through the downturn until recently,” he said.

Some tips for getting fit and staying healthy in 2017:

Getting in shape can be tough.

Staying there can prove even tougher.

With the New Year in full swing, many aspire to drop a few pounds, tone up, or just live a healthier lifestyle.

A recent survey by the Saint Leo University Polling Institute found that 61.8 percent of 1,001 respondents hope to lose weight in 2017.Additionally, 32.4 percent of the surveyed adults vowed to exercise more throughout the New Year.

Those ambitions, however, are often easier said than done.

Only about 8 percent of Americans follow through with New Year’s Resolutions, according to a commonly cited statistic by the University of Scranton.The study, moreover, shows 92 percent of people abandon those resolutions within 30 days.

For one, it takes about six weeks to develop and form a habit, said Dr. Christopher Wolfe, an assistant psychology professor at Saint Leo. “It’s easy to make the resolution and hard to keep with it,” Wolfe said, “because there’s not that ongoing incentive of the holiday — the sort of social tradition of making a resolution.Then, you’re kind of left to your own individual drive to complete it.”

For many, just even launching a resolution — like getting in better shape — is difficult.

“People need something to kind of pull them through that first initial phase,”Wolfe said.

A positive support system — friends or family— is one way to do so,Wolfe said.

“Social support is one of the big factors in all areas, where people are trying new things,” he explained. “You want someone who’s kind of on a similar journey—someone you can kind of be compatible with

Samantha Taylor, owner and head trainer of Pure Health and Fitness Studios in Land O’ Lakes, concurs.

“Accountability is huge,” Taylor said. “If you just answer to yourself, sometimes we let ourselves off the hook. But, if you have accountability, and you’re plugged into a support group with other people that are headed in the same direction, that’s another huge thing that I find that people need for success.”

So, too, is tempering initial expectations.

Fitness newcomers, Taylor said, should slowly build up a workout regimen.

Even a 30-minute routine just a few times a week is a solid program.

“A lot of people overdo it,” Taylor said, “and get really sore. Then they’re just so sore, they’re like, ‘Oh, I can’t do that anymore.’”

To maintain consistency, Taylor advises people should track workouts on a calendar.

“You can look at it on a weekly basis and make sure you’re actually doing what you said you were going to do,”Taylor explained.

To maximize fitness results, gym-goers should combine cardio and resistance training.

Quick, explosive movements across short periods often prove most effective, said Carrie Kukuda, owner of Get A Grip Total Fitness in Lutz.

“I’m a firm believer of mixing high-intensity interval training,” Kukuda said,“because the after-burn is more effective, and you can work out less.”

She added:“You don’t have to live at the gym; you don’t have to live on machines.”

Breaking a sweat is just one part of the fitness equation, however.

A proper diet, too, is a major factor in shedding body fat and unwanted pounds.

“It’s 80 percent how they’re eating,” Taylor said.“If they start a fitness program, but they don’t adjust their food, then they’re

not going to see their weight-loss results that they want.”

Taylor recommends eliminating sugar, and incorporating more low-glycemic foods.

“Start your day with protein and fats, instead of carbohydrates,” she said. “Most people have like pastries, cereal, breakfast oatmeal, stuff like that — and that’s really going to spike your blood sugar.”

Eating clean is also imperative.

“If you’re going to count anything, count the ingredients — not the calories,” Kukuda explained.“Avoid artificial sweeteners and processed foods; it’s another thing that your liver has to detoxify, and anytime you put something in your body that’s unhealthy, your liver turns off fat burning, and goes and takes care of that first.”

In reaching your ultimate objective, experts suggest setting more short-term, achievable goals.

“Have a goal in mind, and then work it backwards and look at the habit that you would need to accomplish that end goal,” Kukuda said. “And, stay away from perfection, because you’re not going to be perfect.”

When a goal is achieved, reward yourself with a gift.

“And, not like a brownie fudge Sundae,” Taylor said, earnestly.“A massage, a new outfit or something...tangible to shoot for.”

Equestrian center brings vision to life

ast year, Jim and Heather Fitzpatrick had the vision of creating an equestrian center for the East Pasco community.

Blazing Saddles Ranch, at 10219 Wirt Road in Dade City, has made that vision a reality.

The Fitzpatricks purchased the 25-acre property in May and, by August, they had transformed the property from a farm to a full-service horse ranch.

“We’re on the cusp of booming Wesley Chapel,” Jim Fitzpatrick said, “so this is more or less a stall for my wife, and the rest is for everybody else.”

Catered toward adults and children, the facility is an ideal setting for residents scattered across Dade City,Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills.

While many venues are geared toward one equestrian discipline, Blazing Saddles offers multiple specialties.

Riders can learn English dressage and western dressage. Or, they can try westernstyle and hunter-jumper.

Full board and pasture is also available.

Blazing Saddles, though, is more than just a ranch with a large riding arena. In addition to a 10-stall horse barn, a gazebo and patio will soon be available to accommodate weddings, corporate retreats and even pony parties.

Plans are also in store to build an open field cross-country course on the property.

Essentially, Blazing Saddles offers “everything from soup to nuts,” said barn manager Karen Rezabek.

“There is not one need we can’t meet,” Rezabek said. “If we have to go get your horse for you, we can do that, too.”

The ranch, interestingly, is an ode to the classic 1974 Mel Brooks-directed Western satire film bearing the same name.

Enter the facility, and you’ll witness an aura heavy on family, hospitality and equestrian expertise.

It all starts with the facility’s tight-knit group of staff and trainers.

Each has their own skillsets, and various specialties.

Among the most captivating is J.R. Reeher, a former rodeo cowboy who once toured on the Professional Bull Riders circuit.

The New Mexico native with Dade City ties is described as a “horse whisperer” of sorts.

He breaks in young horses and retrains “troubled” ones.

Put more simply, he can “work a horse.”

“You’ve always got to have one cowboy tucked away in a barn,” Reeher said, with a smirk.

More importantly, he fills a giant void, said Rezabek.

“We were fortunate that we found him,” the barn manager said. “He puts all the training rides on, he’s bridling the horses for restarting. He does a lot of colt-starting.

“He’s a jack-of-all-trades.”

There’s also Krystina Hemphill, who specializes in hunter-jumper equitation.

Likewise, she prepares young riders for local competitions and showcases.

Meanwhile, the other staff includes Amy Epperson, who teaches dressage, and Karen Miller, who handles speed pattern racing, known as gymkhana.

“We all kind of work together and feed off each other,” Hemphill said.“We’ve got a good thing going here.”

At Blazing Saddles, it all comes down to instructing proper horsemanship.

Heather Fitzpatrick, who sells real estate by trade, said the purpose of the ranch is to help aspiring riders correctly learn the fundamentals.

“I think our philosophy is that we want to build a good foundation, and then go from there.” she said.“Lay the foundation — make sure it’s right — and then let them do the discipline they want.”

“Everybody needs the basics,” Rezabek added.“The good thing is that we have a very solid basic foundation. We also wanted to be well-rounded, so it’s a one-stop shop.”

Ultimately, Blazing Saddles Ranch wants to be a place “for people to feel comfortable” via an open, welcoming environment.

“It’s a really good atmosphere,” Hemphill said.“Everybody’s very laid back, everybody’s very helpful.They’re not afraid to step in and help when needed.There’s a good camaraderie around here.”

Meantime, the facility will be hosting Gene Cox Horsemanship clinics throughout January, February and March.

There, participants will learn to communicate with a horse, and fine-tune riding techniques.

One-day jumping clinics and other camps are also on the horizon, Rezabek said.

Keeping an eye on things Betsy Crisp snapped this photo of one of two ‘regulars’ that have made a home in the Silver Lakes pond, at the corner of Barcellona and Fletch Roads in Land O’ Lakes.

This gator looks ominous, but is only about 18 inches in length, and blends in well with the muddy bank. Having lived in Florida all her life, Crisp always tell the snowbirds/transplants from the North that every body of water has an alligator in it at one time or another.

Owners of In Play LLC and Relin Brothers LLC are seeking a zoning change to clear the way for a Race Trac convenience store and gas station at the northeast corner of Land O’ Lakes Boulevard and Ehren Cutoff, according to county records.

The item is on the consent agenda of the Pasco County Planning Commission, which meets Jan. 11 at 1:30 p.m., at the Historic Pasco County Courthouse in Dade City.

Planning staff members recommend approval.

According to county records, the Race Trac Market Store No. 1221 would be about 5,400 square feet. There would be 16 gas pumps. The “build-out” for the project is scheduled for 2018.

CYCLE TRAINING AND ANNIVERSARY

Cycle Quest is now leasing a space at VisionQuest Fitness Studio, at 24434 State Road 54, in Lutz. And, VisionQuest is celebrating its one-year anniversary.

Cycle Quest owner Dana Newberry began offering cycling classes in December for small groups, generally of six to nine bicycle riders. Private/buddy classes also are available for one to two riders.

Riders can bring their own bicycles or use one of Cycle Quest’s bicycles. Class packages, at varying prices, are available.

VisionQuest Fitness owner Dawn Mong opened her fitness studio in January 2016.

The studio offers group classes, boot camps and personal training.

Coping with seasonal drought in the landscape

By Whitney C. Elmore If you were to take a map of the globe and draw a parallel line to the east and to the west of Florida — worldwide — what would you discover?

You would note that Florida is roughly positioned along the same latitude as Mediterranean-type climates where dry, arid conditions prevail. Logic implies then that our weather should be more like that of Southern California or parts of the Mediterranean; hot and dry.

In a normal year, Florida is especially known for its hot, but very wet summers.

Because Florida sits between two large bodies of water, it has the luxury of moist, humid air riding along the sea breezes being pulled in our direction just looking for a piece of land on which to rain.

Florida averages 50 inches of rainfall per year as opposed to Southern California at 15 inches to 20 inches annually.

But, from October to April or May, Florida can be very dry.

That’s a typical dry pattern for us based on our latitude, so even sticky, swampy Florida is meant to dry down. In our landscape, this can pose some issues, but maybe not the ones you’d expect.

Our trees and shrubs, once established, require little to no supplemental irrigation throughout this typically dry period, because they are adapted to this seasonal variation.

There is one caveat, though:These must be the right plants in the right place.

A plant out of place, say a shade-loving plant in partial to full sun, will obviously require more water to survive if it’s going to do so.

Put that shade-loving plant in a shady spot where it’s meant to be, and we prevent stress, thus lowering water needs.

Newly planted shrubs and trees would certainly require more water during the dry season, so that’s why it’s best to hold off on planting until we begin our warmer, wetter season in May maybe even June, so that frequent irrigation won’t be necessary. Let nature do the watering for you.

Turfgrasses, like St. Augustinegrass

(‘Floratam’ is an example), are a bit different.

St. Augustinegrass will enter a semi-dormant phase in Central Florida due to the shortened day-length of fall and winter. It’s not actively growing, but it’s not totally dormant either, so it does need some water to stay alive.

When it’s dry during the winter, it’s common to see symptoms of drought on this grass.

Rolled leaf blades, a bluish-purple cast, or footprints left behind as we walk on the turf are all symptoms of drought and require supplemental irrigation. Conversely, in the summer, if your turf is established and healthy, it’s unlikely you need irrigation at all, as long as we’re getting frequent rainfall like we normally do.

Be aware that too much water could actually cause more harm than good, and certainly wastes valuable water any time of the year.

As we continue through the dry season, monitor your turf for drought stress and irrigate late in the evening to prevent evaporation losses, and use no more than three-quarters of an inch of water per application.

In Pasco County, water restrictions limit homeowners to one irrigation event per week, so make the most of it, and irrigate appropriately.

When asked how much irrigation a homeowner is applying, the most common response is 10 minutes or 15 minutes.

Ten minutes to 15 minutes of irrigation, depending on your irrigation system and the nozzles, might mean that you’re applying 1/10th of an inch to 2 inches or more of water.

The only way to be sure is to calibrate the

system, which is easy.Take two tuna cans, or three, and place them in each irrigation zone.

Run the zone for a set period of time. Measure the amount of water in the can, and if you’re putting out more or less than the three-quarters of an inch recommended, simply adjust the timing on that zone and retest.

Test each zone. Check for broken or nonfunctional heads.Also, look for heads that are pointing onto pavement, sidewalks and so on, because they are doing nothing more than wasting water and your money.

A simple calibration check every three or four months will prevent a lot of turfgrass woes and save a lot of dough.

Also, remember that your grass is not actively growing through the fall and winter, so fertilizing during the dry season of late fall through early spring is useless, as the plant will not use the fertilizer, and what remains of it is leached into the groundwater leading to senseless pollution. Plus, it’s a waste of money. We don’t want to tell our plants to grow when nature is telling them to rest. There’s a reason they’ve slowed growth or gone dormant, so don’t interfere by overwatering or fertilizing during these times of drought.
