Pasco has building permits backlog

A construction boom has Pasco County receiving applications for building permits nearly at pre-recession levels, county officials say.

But, the required paperwork — coupled with the kickoff of a new software program — is straining the county’s capabilities.

At least right now.

“We think we’re on the bottom side of the problem and getting it under control,” said Don Rosenthal, assistant county administrator.

Part of the solution involves reshuffling duties within the building department and plans to hire five new employees.

The new employees will replace about a half-dozen staffers who left their jobs, often

citing workloads.

“We’ve had some staff leave because of the pressure to turn things around quickly, and the overwhelming volume of work and the change,” said Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker.

A vigil to honor a life gone too soon

A bouquet of heart-shaped balloons separated and floated skyward into the night air, carrying messages of love for Christopher Joseph Sanfeliz.

Below, candles burned brightly, held aloft by more than 400 people who filled the stands at Ron Allen Field at Gaither High.

They had gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor the life of the 24-year-old Sanfeliz, one of 49 people killed during a mass shooting on June 12 at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

“Chris was taken way too soon from the world,” Stephanie Woychowski, president of Gaither’s Parent Teacher Student Association said during the June 15 vigil. “Remember Chris. Remember love.”

Besides killing 49 people, the lone gunman armed with an assault rifle, injured 50 others before he was killed by law enforcement.

The mass shooting, reported as the largest in the nation’s modern history, targeted a club popular among the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.

The Gaither community responded immediately, with former classmates, current students and faculty coming together to organize the vigil for Sanfeliz, a member of the class of 2010.

“Once a Cowboy, always a Cowboy,” said Teresa Trumbach, a teacher at Gaither, known as the home of the Cowboys.

Trumbach met Sanfeliz when he was a freshman.

“He was just one of those great guys,” Trumbach said.“I find it impressive that so many of you came back.”

Before filing into the stands, people stopped to pick up candles, drop donations into a box, or leave photographic mementos of Sanfeliz in a memory box.

Friends and family clung tightly to each other in long hugs.And, they shed tears.

Budget talks start in Pasco County

The economy is picking up steam with new housing construction leading the way, and property tax revenues on the rise.

But, that won’t mean Pasco County commissioners will have an easy time figuring out how to spend tax dollars and hold the line on tax increases.

Commissioners face large budget requests including an increase of $6.5 million from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and smaller requests, including a circulator bus route in Land O’ Lakes.The bus route would cost about $365,000 in the first year and about $308,000 a year after that.

The county’s staff is not recommending a change in the millage rate, but homeowners could see an increase in taxes based on rising property values, officials said.

Commissioners met in a June 13 workshop to gather information about the upcoming 2017 budget.They heard multiple presentations from county department heads.

The largest dollar amount increase request is from the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, which is seeking a 6.1 percent increase, which amounts to about $6.4 million in new funding. If approved, the sheriff’s budget would be $110 million in 2017.

This is the second consecutive year that Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has sought a budget increase of more than $6 million.

Last year, commissioners approved $2.7 million to cover pay raises and benefits, as well as ongoing expenses for body cameras and helicopter maintenance.

Nocco is seeking another round of pay raises to make deputies’ salaries more competitive with other law enforcement agencies in Hillsborough, Pinellas and the City of Tampa.

Data from the sheriff’s office shows the area’s average starting salary is almost $46,000, while Pasco’s is about $41,000.

Pasco’s starting salary is the lowest in the region compared to Hillsborough, Polk, Manatee and Pinellas counties and also lags behind St. Petersburg, Sarasota and Tampa.

The sheriff’s budget also includes money for 10 new positions for the sheriff’s office and 15 for other agencies.

There also is a request for about

$700,000 for laptop computers, an item previously funded from the Penny for Pasco program.

Last year’s budget discussions surrounding the sheriff’s budget often grew contentious.

But after his presentation, Nocco told The Laker/Lutz News:“Everybody has been positive. Everyone is working together.”

Other department heads also made their case for new revenues to increase staff and add services.

Libraries administrator Nancy Fredericks asked for staff needed to restore operating hours for libraries to pre-recession years.

Currently libraries are open five days a week and one night a week per location.

Fredericks hopes for nearly $500,000 more to operate libraries six days a week, and on two to four nights a week.

A graduation ceremony for one at Saint Leo

Some days don’t go exactly as planned.

Just ask Danielle Bunin.

The Land O’ Lakes’ resident was in line on April 30 waiting for the procession to start for her commencement ceremony at Saint Leo University.

While waiting, Bunin —six months pregnant at the time — stepped away from the crowd to get some fresh air. She passed out, fell down and landed on her stomach.

After an ambulance ride and four hours in an emergency room, Bunin heard the good news that her baby would be fine. But, she had missed a graduation that meant so much to her and her family.

She had expected to receive her second degree from the university that day — a master’s in business administration in human resource management.

“She was really looking forward to making that walk,” said her husband, Bradley Bunin.

“She was so upset that she didn’t make it.”

It turns out that the staff at Saint Leo wanted to make things right.

On June 6, Bunin received her degree at a commencement ceremony held just for her at Saint Leo’s main campus, off State Road 52 in St. Leo. She received her degree from William Lennox, the university’s president.

Family members looked on, with pride.

Bradley Bunin’s brother, Matthew Bunin, flew in from Las Vegas to attend the ceremony.

“It’s inspiring to see what she has accomplished,” her brother-in-law said.

Danielle Bunin and Lennox stood in caps and gowns outside the president’s office, framed under an archway.

After receiving her degree, Bunin responded with gratitude.

“Thank you.Thank you.Thank you. It’s incredible that you were able to make this happen,” she said.

Lennox said personally bestowing the degree to her meant something special.

Lennox said the university reaches out in particular to students who are in mid-career seeking to expand their possibilities.

“That takes an awful lot of work from the family,” he said.

Summer of sorrow calls us to love each other

nly weeks have passed since the awful news that emerged from Meadow Pointe, but ensuing events in Orlando make it seem like a lifetime. So much atrocity packed into so little time.We hadn’t even crossed the solstice, and already it was the summer of sorrow.

But for many in our community, it began here, with the dark bathroom, the blocked door, the oozing blood, and the pure, inexpugnable horror beyond.

And after that, the revelations and the conjecture, the grief and the fury.Tovonna Holton murmured she “owed them.” But surely she didn’t owe them this, the ultimate self-sacrifice. Surely not this.The life of a 15-year-old, so vibrant and full of possibility, in exchange — if the early narrative proves out — for cruel, brainless shaming?

It is too late for Tovonna, whose photographs reveal her beauty and outward joy, but fail to detect her brittle vulnerabilities.

But, if there are young people in your household, or your neighborhood, or in your greater village where you work, play, worship, attend school or volunteer, now — yes, literally, now (tonight might be too late) — is the time to tell them:There is nothing so awful in your life that we cannot sort it out together.

I’m talking to adults, of course, but not just to adults.This is on teens and ‘tweens,

too.This next is for them.

Guys, you know, oftentimes better than parents or the other adults in your lives, when your friends are aching, when they think they’ve been done wrong.

Nobody expects you to fix the hurt. But, you can be the key to helping make sure the hurt doesn’t explode. You can be the one who gives permission to seeking the grownup who can defuse the bomb ticking inside your friend.

Your elementary school training about stumbling upon mislaid weapons applies.

Whether it’s an abandoned gun or your friend’s crisis, it’s not your duty to pick it up and carry it around. Instead, you provide support by getting help. And that help begins by gently introducing a responsible adult.

Sometimes it’s mom and/or dad.

Sometimes it’s a pastor or a teacher or a counselor or a coach or a club sponsor or

the principal. Maybe it’s one of the moms who’s always working the concession stand, even if her kids don’t run in your circles. Maybe it’s the neighbor with the slightly disheveled yard, or the manager at your favorite night spot.

The thing about grownups is, they’ve usually learned knowing all the answers is less important than knowing whom to ask when they’re stumped. And they — we — would much rather play the role of guide than mourner.We’d rather bring relief than casseroles and flowers.

What allegedly happened to Tovonna Holton — a surreptitious video of her showering, or bathing — posted on the internet, was unspeakable. If the claims survive scrutiny, then every step in the process violated Tovonna’s most precious rights: the right to innocence, the right to privacy, the right not to be exploited, the right not to be subjected to ridicule.

At the time this is being written, a spokesman for the Pasco Sheriff’s Office reports the agency is close to wrapping up its investigation. If the allegations are confirmed, it is difficult to imagine a punishment sufficient for those who conspired to propel Tovonna over the brink.

But, even if the source of ultimate trouble lay elsewhere, the shaming video exists.

Did no one stop to think:“What’s the worst that can happen?”And its necessary followup:“Can I live with that?”These are always good questions to weigh, in every phase of life, but never more so than when what you’re plotting holds the potential to scar someone for life.

For life? Yes. The internet is forever. If she’d somehow found the courage and counseling to survive her tortured moment on the cliff overlooking oblivion, she’d have had to figure out how to get along knowing the footage was out there, always lurking.

“Explain this video,” says the college gatekeeper.“You want to tell me what was going on here?” says the personnel director between her and her dream job.“How did you wind up naked on YouTube?” asks the man who was almost Tovonna’s fiancé. And on and on and on.

And yet, we would surrender all that is good and reassuring about our species if we imagined even such an unforgivable prank couldn’t have been surmounted.

In the wake of the slaughter in the nightclub popular with Orlando’s LGBT community, people set aside their politics and upbringings to overwhelm blood banks. And, there’s movement on how to keep firearms away from smoldering bad actors tentatively identified by law enforcement.

Because these are things we can do. So is wrapping an arm around a troubled teen and saying, right now, “I am here. You are loved.Things will get better.”

ith hurricane season opening June 1, here are some steps to help keep your family safe.

Plan Ahead – Ensure your family’s safety by creating a disaster preparedness plan in advance of hurricane season. This includes assembling a disaster survival kit and planning your emergency evacuation routes.

Secure Your Property – When a hurricane warning is given, close window shutters and attach protective panels with previously installed fasteners. Videos on how to quickly and safely board up your home can be found at FLASH.org, the website for the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes.

Get to Safety – If you have not already evacuated inland, and there is no time to get to an emergency shelter, stay in the middle of your home, away from windows and glass doors.

Take cover under a staircase or a heavy piece of furniture. Do not stay in a manufactured home because they are easily overturned in high winds and pierced by flying objects.

Be Sure Your Home Is Properly Insured – Think of homeowner’s insurance as financial protection for what the future may bring. Without an adequate policy, you will have to cover home repairs out of your own pocket.

David Weekley Brings Home Diamond Award In Asturia

Heirloom seeds preserve heritage, save money

As the warm-season vegetable garden season draws to a close in Central Florida, there’s still much work to be done in preparation for the next planting season.This is a great time to collect heirloom seeds, which can save money and provide an easily renewable source of your favorite plant varieties.

An heirloom variety is an older cultivar maintained in relatively isolated regions, even one’s own backyard.

Heirlooms aren’t used for wide-scale agriculture production any longer, but they are often quite resistant to pests and weather extremes.

Heirloom plants harbor lots of genetic diversity, which means they are unlikely to yield consistent colors, size and even flavor, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be flavorful, pretty and highly prized in the home garden. More importantly, heirloom varieties can be nurtured, selected, preserved and handed down from one family member to the next for many generations leaving a link to past heritages.

The goal with heirloom preservation is to ensure all of the cultivar’s genes are transmitted from each generation to the next leaving us with a large gene pool – and lots of variation.

The basics of saving heirloom seeds starts with nurturing every plant into maturity, except for any diseased plants or ones yielding fruit or veggies we don’t like.

We then harvest the fruit, clean the seeds of flesh, dry the seeds, then store the seeds in the hope of germinating those same cultivars the next season or years down the road.

Beans, cowpeas, even tomatoes and peppers make excellent plants for seed preservation. A few considerations: Hybrid plants will not provide seeds bearing the same qualities as the plant from which they came – seedlings from these plants will have some, but not all, of the qualities of the parent plant.

If you are interested in saving seeds, be sure to grow enough plants to get a large seed batch and avoid inbreeding. For corn, you need 100 ears, and for tomatoes, a dozen plants to get enough quality seed to store.

Also, be sure to allow the fruit to mature on the plant before harvesting; be selective when you harvest. Choose only the best of the fruits from the plants which you favor

Collecting heirloom seeds from the vegetables you grow in your garden can save money. Heirloom seeds can also be passed from one generation to another, giving you a chance to save seeds and a piece of your heritage at the same time.

for specific traits. Seeds that collapse when they’ve been dried are not viable. Throw them away. For example, squash, cucumber and melon seeds should be hard and plump when dry, not shriveled.

When you have harvested the seeds, be sure to immediately clean and dry them. For tomatoes, rinse the seeds and wipe them with a rough towel to remove the gel-like fleshy coat which prevents germination. For most any other plant, remove the flesh from the seeds as best you can, then lay them out on newspaper to dry. Any moldy seeds should be discarded. Even a food dehydrator can be useful in drying seeds. But, a warm, sunny spot for a few days will do just fine.

Once the seeds are dry (usually hard, but not brittle), place them in well-marked envelopes (cultivar, date, traits), wrap the envelope in aluminum foil, place them in a sealed plastic storage bag and store them in a refrigerator.

Place small amount of seeds in each envelope just to ensure a bad batch doesn’t ruin the whole bunch.

Before planting stored seeds for the next season, bring them up to room temperature in a closed container on the counter for two days.This will help prevent thermal shock.

Planting seeds in the garden can be great fun and provide quality time with family.

Preserving seeds for the next season and years to come can serve as a time capsule of generations past. Consider saving your heirloom seeds — and, at the same time, save a piece of your heritage.

BLOOD-THINNING MEDS

Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, 14000 Fivay Road in Hudson, is the first hospital in Pasco County to offer an implant that can help reduce the risk of stroke in some patients with atrial fibrillation.

The hospital’s heart institute team recently performed the first implant of Boston Scientific’s Watchman Left Atrial Appendage Closure Implant, a small, flexible wire and mesh system that when inserted into the heart via a catheter placed in the groin, closes off an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage. This is where blood can pool and clots most often form.These clots are believed to cause the majority of strokes in people with nonvalvular AFib. The Watchman offers a nondrug alternative, and over time, patients may be able to stop such blood thinners as soon as 45 days from the date of the implant.

Upscale RV park rolling into Dade City

Recreational vehicles and RV parks dot the landscape of rural thoroughfares surrounding Dade City.

But, just north of the historic downtown district, a very uncommon RV park is being planned. This project, an upscale RV gated community with amenities more often found in pricey single-family home subdivisions, is moving toward development.

Hill Country Estates is at 17151 U.S. 301, atop one of Dade City’s rolling hills. “It’s a pretty unusual project,� said Jack Buckley, real estate solutions provider with Exit Realty in Land O’ Lakes.

The site has 37 ready-to-build one-acre lots.

Construction on the first site is anticipated within 45 days.

A standard feature will be a pull-through RV garage. Buyers will have several floor plan options ranging from about 1,200 square feet up to a more customized 5,000 square feet.

There will be one-bedroom, one-bath; two-bedroom, two- bath; and three-bedroom and two-bath houses.

Amenities can include an observation

deck atop the garage, a pool house, garden and courtyard.The base price will be about $505,000. There also would be fees for a homeowner’s association. “We like to think these would be a second residence,� said Buckley. Though for some, he said it could be a third or fourth home.

Interest in the homes has been high, Buckley said, with more than 90 inquiries.

Developers hope to acquire an additional 98 acres from an adjacent golf course in order to build another 80 homes, he said.

The initial goal is to sell at least half of the existing lots, and then expand, Buckley added.

The project’s location is centrally located with easy access to Interstate 75, and trips to Tampa International Airport and downtown.

But, Buckley said there also is plenty happening now and in the future in Dade City.

Potential projects could include a new golf course and a boutique hotel, he said.

The Publix grocery store that opened in late 2015 at the corner of U.S. 301 and Clinton Avenue is also a plus. It’s a short drive from Hill Country Estates. “That’s a big feature for us, because years ago where would people go to do their shopping?� Buckley said.

The software program, known as Accela, allows for online applications and is intended to speed up the process and be more transparent. But Rosenthal said, as with any new technology, there is a learning curve and glitches to work through. “That was no small task,� he said.

Employees are working through about a two-week backlog of applications. That is significantly less than it was, Rosenthal said.

Commissioners approved a master plan for the county’s parks and recreation facilities in 2015. It would take an estimated $222 million to implement the plan.

As a start, Kelley Boree, parks, recreation and natural resources director, proposed hiring a consultant to craft a pilot campaign to help launch the plan. That would cost $75,000, but Boree said many counties hire consultants for this reason.

There is no one on the county’s staff that has the skill set to perform this work, Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker said. “To me this is critically important because our parks are so underfunded,â€? said Pasco County Chairwoman Kathryn Starkey. “I’m talking about all types of recreation‌ We’ve been lax in this forever.â€?

The county also is proposing to hire a lobbyist to promote Pasco’s interests in Washington D.C., at a cost of $60,000 a year.

Commissioner Mike Wells agreed. “They need to find a way to say yes, not a way to say no,� he said. “I know they are busy, but they are in the customer service business.�

Baker said plans are underway to create a newsletter to provide information on what’s going on at the building department. policy administrator, said Pasco would see benefits from a “closer relationship� with federal agencies, especially those dealing with transportation and environmental matters.

Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader said he wasn’t opposed to the proposal, but said the county should avoid duplicating efforts already done by the Florida Department of Transportation. “You’ve got to be specific on lobbying efforts on the federal level,� he said.

The building department wants about $403,000 to hire four new inspectors and a records clerk to implement a code enforcement ordinance approved amid controversy among Land O’ Lakes business owners.

The ordinance is meant to focus on cleanup efforts along major corridors including U.S. 41, U.S. 301 and U.S. 19. But, building officials now say they don’t have enough staff to enforce it.

In subsequent years, enforcement costs would be about $290,000.

Commissioners will meet individually with county staff in the next weeks to make their budget preferences known.

The budget will be presented on July 12, with final approval in September.

Walking soccer league begins in New Tampa

Colin Eke was fed up with playing soccer.

The 60-year-old was tired of the nagging injuries and the over-aggressiveness of “younger lads” he regularly played against.

After undergoing several operations — including Achilles and knee surgeries, plus a hip replacement — Eke decided about four years ago that it was best to stop playing the game he still loves.

“I hung my boots up,” said Eke, a native of Ipswich, England. “I was really wearing myself out.”

After a few idle years, Eke is planning to play the sport again, albeit in a fashion that’s more accommodating to his age, and his knees.

As the league director of the New APSL (Adult Premier Soccer League) in New Tampa and Dade City, Eke is forming an Over 50s Walking Soccer League that begins play on July 3. Games will be played each week on the fields of Benito Middle School, 10101 Cross Creek Blvd., in Tampa.An introductory practice session will be held on June 26.

Described as “the fastest growing sport in the United Kingdom,” walking soccer is completely non-contact.

Many of the rules are different than traditional soccer.

For instance, there’s no running or jumping, no off-sides, no throw-ins, no entering penalty areas and no slide tackling.

As opposed to 11 versus 11, each walking soccer squad can only have six players on the field at any given time.

Considering the reduced numbers, the field (50 by 25 meters) and goalposts are also smaller than conventional soccer.

The sport (walking soccer) is growing very quickly, and I thought this could be a good chance to try something locally in Tampa,” said Eke, who started organizing various New APSL soccer leagues in 2012.

“It tries to avoid injuries that can be caused through muscle strain, hamstring problems, back problems, ankle twisting and all those other things that happen when you’re over the age of 50.”

To further reduce the risk of injuries, there’s a penalty box, or “sin bin” for those that get hotheaded or try to bend the rules

of the game, which last an hour, consisting of two 30-minute halves.

Eke hopes the variations to the world’s most popular sport will reignite the passion of the game for older players “without having to go to work on crutches.”

The league director said men and women of all skill levels are welcome, and he fully expects to have some people sign up that haven’t played the game in decades.

“We just do it for the fun and enjoyment of it,” he said.“That’s purely what the game is all about — some people are playing in their 90s in the U.K., which is quite incredible.”

Eke hopes to have at least four teams in place by June 26, with an eventual goal of 12 teams. To reach that mark, registration will remain open throughout the nine-week season for additional teams and individual players.

“If we get one person who loves it, he or she will tell their friends — that’s how we’ve grown to now,” he said.

PHSC PLAYER NAMED ELITE HITTER Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) freshman outfielder Emily Stafford has received the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Marucci Elite Hitter Award for District F Regions 8 & 10. Stafford led the PHSC women’s softball team with a .455 average, and added nine doubles, two triples and one home run, with 21 RBIs.The Palm Harbor native only struck out nine times in 122 total at bats.

The PHSC softball team finished the season with a 22-15 record after last month’s elimination in the NJCAA D2 Southeast District Tournament in Burlington, North Carolina.

MLB DRAFT SELECTS FORMER GAITHER PLAYER The Seattle Mariners selected Camryn Williams, a former Gaither High shortstop, with the 1,167th pick, in the 39th round of last week’s Major League Baseball Draft.

Williams helped guide Gaither to its first FHSAA 7A State Championship, batting .338 with eight extra-base hits and seven stolen bases.Williams has signed to play collegiate baseball at Dallas Baptist (Texas) University, which is widely viewed as one of the nation’s premier Division I baseball programs.

The FC (Football Club) Tampa Rangers won the 2016 Florida U18 Boys State Cup championship last month. The club team will be advancing to the U.S. Youth Soccer Southern Region Championship in Greenville, South Carolina, from June 23 through 30. They will face top teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee.

SAINT LEO’S TROY SIEBER SELECTED IN MLB DRAFT Saint Leo junior first baseman Troy Sieber was selected by the Houston Astros in the 24th round with the 727nd pick of last week’s Major League Baseball Draft.

“We’re very proud of Troy and all the hard work he has put in to make this happen. We wish him all the best, and we will miss him,” Saint Leo head baseball coach Sean O’ Connor said in a release.

Sieber, a Second Team Division II AllAmerican, batted .457 with 16 home runs and 55 RBIs this season.

A native of Salem, New Jersey, Sieber also ended the season with a 14-game hitting streak.

“It’s hard to lose a player of Troy’s caliber, but it’s fun to see them go on and play.

This is what Troy and all these guys train for – a chance to play professional ball,” O’ Connor said.

Since 2013, the Lions have had at least one player selected in the MLB draft. tryouts for its 2016-2017 season on Aug. 20 and Aug. 21. Tryouts begin each day at 9 a.m. in the Fitness Center, in building K on the West Campus in New Port Richey, 10230 Ridge Road.A tryout preparation session for the upcoming season will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15. Stunting and jumping skills are required; tumbling skills are recommended.The tryout preparation session will include practicing with peers and receiving tips from coaching staff; participants will also receive a cheer tryout application packet.

The PHSC cheerleaders compete at the state and national level, promote school spirit on campus and at all home basketball games.Team members also are required to support additional PHSC athletic programs, host fundraisers, and participate in community service projects throughout the year.

Male and female PHSC students, including incoming freshmen, returning sophomores and transfer students in good academic standing may try out.

Shops at Wiregrass debuts flagpole on Flag Day

nitially billed as a celebration to unveil a new 40-foot flagpole at The Shops at Wiregrass, the event took on a more somber tone in light of the mass shootings in Orlando.

At the beginning of the Flag Day ceremony, Greg Lenners, the general manager for The Shops at Wiregrass, asked for a moment of silence.

That moment lasted 49 seconds.

Each second symbolized the loss of a life on June 12 at Pulse nightclub in Orlando.

In asking for sign of respect, Lenners also asked those gathered to honor those who were injured, as well as their families and the community of Orlando.

Following Lenners’ remarks, Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore shared some history about Flag Day, noting that it was officially established by a proclamation

by President Woodrow Wilson on May 30, 1916.

President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress on Aug. 3, 1949 declaring June 14 as National Flag Day. Moore invited those gathered to reflect upon the meaning of the American flag.

“Think to yourself: What does this flag mean to me?” Moore said. “In your heart, right now, what does it mean to you?” he asked.

“Who gave up their lives to keep that flag flying?” he asked.

Moore said when he thinks about the flag, he thinks about such things as freedom, family, veterans and pride.

The Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol handled the duties of presenting the colors and hoisting the flag.

Immediately after raising the 8-by-12foot flag to the top of the pole, squadron members lowered it to half-staff, in honor of the Orlando shooting victims.

Those attending the event said they came to demonstrate their patriotism and celebrate what the American flag represents.

Teresa Fegan came sporting a blouse decked out with stars.

“I feel like we’re free in this country,” the 73-year-old Fegan said, explaining why she wanted to attend. “It’s wonderful to be a part of this country. I am so sorry for what happened in Orlando,” she added.

Her 80-year-old husband, Pete, said he posts a flag at his home on all of the nation’s patriotic holidays.

Fifty-year-old Juan Obando and his 42year-old wife, Monica, came to the ceremony for two reasons.

They wanted to support their son, Juan Obando Jr., who is part of the Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron, and they wanted to express their patriotism.

“We are American citizens,” Juan Obando said.“We are supporting America at this time,” he added, referring to the mass shootings in Orlando.

“It is so sad,” his wife, Monica said.

The event also attracted a number of dignitaries, including Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader and state Reps.

Danny Burgess and Shawn Harrison. Bob Hatfield was there, too, representing U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis.

Eric Johnson, of Wesley Chapel Toyota, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” with a few members of the audience reverently joining in.

When adding the flagpole to the regional mall, Lenners said “we were methodical in looking for the location.

“We wanted something that was front and center,” he said.“This is certainly front and center.”

More than 365 HomeGoods stores nationwide will participate in the 15th annual “Help Families Fight Cancer” campaign to benefit the Jimmy Fund. The fund supports pediatric and adult cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

More than 20 employers and 100 job seekers participated in the Florida Manufacturing Career Fair on May 11 at Pasco-Hernando State College’s Spring Hill campus. The PHSC Florida TRADE Grant office, Career Source Pasco Hernando, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and the Upper Tampa Bay Manufacturing Association hosted the free event.

The fair provided specialized career opportunities in manufacturing for job seekers, including 15 veterans. Employers at the fair included Monster Transmission,
