for a small commissary fee.

The tablets also have pre-downloaded religious texts, including the Bible and Koran.

That feature is especially meaningful to 46year-old inmate Doney Bedford, who’s awaiting trial on drug possession charges.

He aspires to become a theologian, as he receives credits for college education through mail-in correspondence courses.

“It’s got every possible translation of the Bible, it’s got the Koran, it’s got Aramaic Hebrew, and the history of the Bible. It’s an endless supply of information,” Bedford explained.

Bedford also uses the tablet to dive into subjects like ancient Egyptian history, which helps him to effectively use his jail time.

“When you have something like this, to educate yourself, it just broadens your horizons,” Bedford said.

“These resources are very, very good for us, so that way we can learn to better ourselves and become better, productive men of society,” he added.

Another inmate, 31-year-old Christopher Murgatroyd, says the tablets have even eased tensions within his housing unit.

Land O’ Lakes jail unveils educational tablet program Miguel Perez just wants to better educate himself as he awaits trial on racketeering charges at the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center.

The 53-year-old inmate has an added tool to do that, thanks to the jail’s new tablet program.

Last month, the detention center distributed over 200 Google Nexus 7 tablets to be shared among nearly 1,700 inmates.

Its primary focus is on education and rehabilitation.

The tablets, secure and unable to connect to the Internet, come preloaded with various learning and spiritual applications, such as Kahn Academy and Calm.

Kahn Academy features in-depth reading material, interactive videos, virtual museum tours and TED Talks, as well as GED prep education, math, engineering, humanities, economics, science and college career prep studies; Calm helps inmates deal with substance abuse, anxiety and emotional trauma.

“There’s just so much in there — algebra, physics, economics, biology,” Perez said.

“It goes from ‘A to Z.’” The tablets, equipped with protective hard shell cases, were donated to the jail by Telmate, a leading provider of secure inmate communication systems, at no cost to Pasco County taxpayers. Other county jail systems in the state, including Flagler and Walton counties, have implemented similar educational tablet programs.

Perez, like others, has been glued to a tablet since they were delivered Aug. 17.

“It is amazing; I really love it,” Perez said.

“Instead of wasting time playing cards or doing nothing or walking around moping, you can actually do something with your mind and your life.”

He added: “We’ve made a mistake — whatever we’ve done — so it gives us the option to fix it...and move forward in a posi-

Helping Hurricane Harvey victims Area churches, and others, are getting involved to help raise money, or collect goods, to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Bishop Gregory Parkes has asked all 81 parishes and missions in the Diocese of St. Petersburg to hold a special collection the weekend of Sept. 2 and Sept. 3, or Sept. 9 and Sept. 10, for the needs of people affected by natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey that is causing devastating damage to Texas and is expected to impact Louisiana.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families that have lost loved ones and to all who have lost homes and businesses along with their sense of peace and normalcy,” Bishop Parkes said in a statement published on the Diocese’s website.“The prayerful and financial support of people from all around the country is urgently needed.”

Funding and flexibility needed Roads, beautification in substance abuse fight among legislative

While President Donald Trump has declared opioid abuse to be a national emergency, local experts have urged U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis to remember that other substance abuse problems also remain to be a real concern in Pasco County.

Bilirakis paid a visit to the Land O’ Lakes Community Center on Aug. 22 seeking to hear from people on the front lines of tackling substance abuse problems.

His visit came immediately following the Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention’s meeting.

Those gathered for Bilirakis’ session included health care and social service providers, people recovering from drug addictions, family members of addicts and others interested in the topic of substance abuse.

“I wanted to hear directly from you,” Bilirakis said.“The best ideas about how we can help will come from you. I’m here to listen and to take your feedback back to Washington with me.

The congressman said he expects Trump’s emergency declaration to result in

more funding to address the opioid crisis.

And, Bilirakis said, there’s no question action is needed.

“More people are dying each year from opioid overdose than from car accidents.

The statistics are staggering and truly tragic,” said Bilirakis, who represents Florida’s 12th Congressional district.

“This is something that needs to be attacked. It transcends political lines,” Bilirakis added.

Then, he asked the crowd:“Where is the need in the community?”

Those attending had plenty to say.

They told Bilirakis about the waiting lists for public beds and services, and the empty beds at private providers.

They told him there were too many strings attached to state and federal funding.

They said people who need mental health care can’t get it, and that impedes the ability to help them in their recovery efforts.

They said doctors still prescribe too many pills, and that pill mills are still going strong — noting there can be lines of a hundred people or more waiting for their See SUBSTANCE, page 11A

Funds for the Interstate 75/Overpass Road project and the Land O’ Lakes Boulevard Beautification Plan are among priority requests for the 2018 legislative session.

Pasco County commissioners agreed to a wish list for the upcoming session at their Aug. 29 meeting in Dade City.

The $15 million sought for I-75 and a new interchange at Overpass Road made it into the state’s 2017 budget. But, Gov. Rick Scott vetoed the money.

County commissioners are hoping for a better outcome the second time around.

The approximately 9-mile project would widen, extend and re-align Overpass Road, and build a new I-75 interchange. It is a high-priority transportation project for the county in an area of northeast Pasco County that is rapidly developing, residentially and commercially.

More details sought in State Road 54/56 debate

Task force members want more information before reaching conclusions on future road designs aimed at easing traffic congestion along the State Road 54 and State Road 56 corridor.

The task force met Aug. 24 in a public meeting to review 11 road alternatives, and a no build option.

Task force members are expected to whittle their road list to three or four plus the no build option.

Just one more meeting, in October, had been planned, but task force members asked for a workshop in addition to the final meeting to get more details on the road selections.

That workshop will be an open session, but no public comment will be taken.

That workshop likely will be scheduled in October.

The entire study is being done in phases, with additional meetings planned for 2018.

The task force is studying the corridor from Bruce B. Downs Boulevard on the east to U.S. 19 on the west.

The current focus is on two intersections: Little Road and State Road 54 in New Port Richey, and U.S. 41 and State Road 54 in Land O’ Lakes.

The Aug. 24 meeting laid out the complexity of the issue.

Task force members are studying five elevated toll lanes, five at-grade level road designs, and a no build option.

Opinions are divided.

“I have been an absolute no build,” said Christie Zimmer, who is a member of the citizens’ advisory board for the county’s Metropolitan Planning Organization. But, looking at the possibilities, she added, “Something needs to happen. We have to come up with an alternative.”

Chris Saenz said the task force lacked the diversity to reflect the larger Pasco County community. He suggested a referendum could help settle the matter.

Maintenance and operating costs also will drive up already burgeoning costs of construction and right-of-way purchases, Saenz said.

One at-grade level option, with express bus lanes, could potentially cost nearly $1 billion to build.

“The cost of ownership is going to take ya’ll to the poor house,” he said. “Let’s not lose sight of that,” Saenz said.

proposal to build a privately funded 33-mile express toll road over the top of State Road 56 and State Road 54. That project was scrapped.

Residents also have strongly opposed a more recent proposal from Florida Department of Transportation to build a flyover, with toll lanes — to ease traffic at the intersection of State Road 54 and U.S. 41.

That proposal is among the alternatives on task force members’ list, but state transportation officials put the project on hold.

That decision is part of the reason why two task forces were formed in 2015 to come up with a future transportation vision for the corridor.

The current task force, with some members from the previous two groups, began meeting in early 2016.

Bill Ball, a principal at Tindale Oliver, acknowledged that there is some suspicion in the community that an elevated toll road is being pushed.

But, he noted that every type of design, including elevated toll lanes, at ground level and no build, is represented in the list of options.

The task force’s purpose is to gather public input, and consider the range of choices, said David Goldstein, Pasco’s chief assistant county attorney.

“If it’s not going to be elevated toll road, what do ya’ll want?” he said.

As an aid in the decision-making, task force members received individual estimates on construction costs, right–of-way purchases and maintenance costs.They also received guidance on other issues, including environmental impacts, wait times at traffic signals, and numbers of businesses that could be relocated.

Still, members wanted more.

For instance, questions were raised about who would collect tolls, and for how long, if an elevated option was selected.

“That can be part of the recommendations,” Zimmer said.

Concerns also were raised about whether any alternatives would improve the level of service along the corridor.

The answer appeared to be that not much would change, based on the growth anticipated in Pasco. Roads and intersections that are ranked now at F, for failed, could still have failing grades.

“F does not solve the problem,” said Rich Dutter, who is one of three at-large citizens on the task force.

Multiply the plants in your garden, by dividing them

O

ne of the easiest and most dependable ways to grow new plants is through division.

In case you’ve never heard of it, division is a method of vegetative or asexual reproduction. Many common Florida plants are great candidates for dividing.

Can you think of some? The UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, along with many other county Extension offices, have teaching and demonstration gardens that you may visit to learn more about Florida Friendly LandscapingTM. Examples of plants that you may see in our teaching gardens that are easy to propagate by division include daylily, African iris, rain lilies, society garlic, blackberry lily, Agapanthus, peacock ginger, walking iris, Heliconia, Aspidistra or “cast iron plant,” Bulbine, crinums, amaryllis, ferns, and rhizomatous begonias.

The common Florida shrub Plumbago may also be divided. Plumbago is a great, drought-tolerant plant. It serves as a nectar plant for native pollinators and as a larval host plant for cassius blue butterflies.

Even houseplants such as African violets are easy to propagate by division.

Many perennials — plants that live longer than one year or growing season — thrive when divided.

Before you divide your plants, decide where you’re going to place them.

Are you going to keep them in pots until they grow into more hardy plants? Are you going to plant them directly in the landscape? Will you give them away as gifts?

If you plant them in a pot, be sure the pot is a good size for the plant — that is, not too big and not too small. The pot should also have drainage holes.

Be sure to give the newly potted plants time to adjust to their environment, and keep in mind they may do best for the time being if placed in a part-sun, part-shade location for a few weeks. If you’re planting

somewhere else in your garden, check that light and soil conditions are appropriate.

Propagating plants by division requires no special tools, and many of us use a sharp knife, a shovel or a trowel depending on the plant and the size of the root ball.

Here are the steps for propagating your plants by division: • Dig up the plant and carefully separate or cut the root ball into sections with a sharp knife, trowel or shovel.

• Pull apart separate sections so that each division has a crown and root system.

The crown is the part of the plant where the roots and stem meet.

• Replant the parent plant in its previous location or in a new location.

• Plant the divided plants either in the ground or in nursery pots. If relocating to another part of your garden, make sure it’s the right plant for the right place.

• Use care to make sure you plant them at the soil line and not planted too deep.

• Apply a 2-inch to 3-inch layer of mulch above the soil line. Mulch helps conserve water, reduce weed pressure, moderate soil temperatures, and adds organic material to soil over time.

• Water your newly planted divisions.

• Monitor your plants until they’re established. The first week may require daily watering. The next two weeks to three weeks may need watering every other day.

After that, you can water as needed.

However, with landscape plants as with turfgrass, you’ll need to adjust your watering schedule if we get plenty of rain.

• If plants are in pots, the amount they dry out will depend on the size of the pot and the material of the pot, for instance, whether it is clay, stone or plastic.

• Apply a controlled-release fertilizer.

Controlled-release fertilizers can be more expensive, but they provide a steady supply of nutrients to your plants. Using controlledrelease fertilizers may help reduce pollution because less nutrients run off landscapes or leach into groundwater.

Pasco County considers permits for roofs on boat docks

Pasco County commissioners are looking to relax the county’s ban on roofs over boat docks and boat lifts.

At an Aug. 22 workshop, they directed county staff members to draft an ordinance that would allow the roofs to be permitted, with restrictions.

For instance, the roofs must not block scenic views of the water. Roofs would not be allowed along canals due to their narrow widths.

“If you put one up (there), you’re definitely impeding the view of your neighbors,” said Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore.

An engineer also must certify that the structures could withstand hurricane-force winds.

“You need an engineer’s certification to make sure you’re not making a flying missile during hurricanes,” said Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey.

County officials said some residents are eager to have the roofs, while others are strongly opposed.

Residents of the deed-restricted community of Gulf Harbors are very concerned their views may go away, if roofs are permitted, county officials said.

The county can’t draft an ordinance that specifically excludes Gulf Harbors, said Jeffrey Steinsnyder, the county’s attorney.

If a Gulf Harbors’ resident applied for a permit, it would be up to the community to enforce deed restrictions banning roofs, but Steinsynder said,“I’m not sure they have the prohibitions you think they have.”

County officials said several docks on county lakes were grandfathered in years ago.

Pasco’s regulation efforts date back at least a decade with the issuance of dock permits for marine waters, rivers and manmade canals. The focus largely was on ensuring that docks weren’t built too far into the waterways to obstruct passage or views.

In 2010, Pasco commissioners amended the dock ordinance to make it clear that roofs were prohibited, and to require that structures be located at least 15 feet from the “mean-high water line.”

The county later grandfathered in roofs and wall structures built before June, 2010, and also applied the dock ordinance to “all privately and publicly owned bodies of water-lakes.”

In the past, residents were referred to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection or the Southwest Florida Water Management District, known as Swiftmud, for dock permits.

Regulations on covered docks and boat lifts vary by county and city. For example, New Port Richey bans both.

The city of Temple Terrace regulates the matter based on height and square-footage.

Pinellas County permits roofs over boat lifts only.

Pasco allows canvas covers for boats.

COLLEGE PROHIBITS TOBACCO

Pasco-Hernando State College joined more than 60 Florida College System institutions and other Florida private and public universities in providing students, faculty and staff with a tobacco and smoke-free environment. As of Aug. 14, PHSC campuses are 100 percent tobacco and smoke-free.

The PHSC District Board of Trustees voted unanimously, last November, to prohibit smoking and the use of tobacco products college-wide.

The new policy states smoking or use of tobacco products, objects or devices, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, electronic cigars or smokeless tobacco products are prohibited on all Pasco-Hernando State College campuses.This includes inside buildings, and anywhere on campus grounds, such as sidewalks, athletic fields and parking lots.

Part of the school’s goal is to ensure the overall well-being of students, faculty and staff by offering health tips, including resources to help current tobacco users and smokers quit.

SAINT LEO GAINS MORE THAN 700 NEW STUDENTS

More than 700 freshmen and transfer students moved into Saint Leo University for the 2017-2018 school season. “It’s serving more than one purpose, actually; education really helps a lot.”

Inmates get access to the tablets in their cells, and anytime outside of lockdown, said Maj. Stacey Jenkins, who supervises the Security Services Section of the Court Services Bureau at the Sheriff’s Office. Each is assigned a unique pin number and login into tablets via facial recognition technology.

Some inmates, however, will not have access to the tablets, including those in disciplinary confinement or in the medical wing.

“Every shift change (tablets) are going to have to be accounted for by the deputies,” Jenkins said.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco emphasized the importance of the tablet initiative, especially for detention centers where inmates have shorter stays before they’re reintegrated into society.

The jail’s average stay is 67 days.That includes those held without bond or unable to post bail set by the courts, those being transferred from other states or counties while awaiting trial in Pasco County, or those found guilty and sentenced to serve less than one year.

Said Nocco: “I know a lot of times citizens and maybe some of our members are going to be like,‘I can’t believe we’re giving inmates tablets.’ Well, a lot of these people are going to go back into the community. If you don’t give them the opportunity to succeed, then they’re going to be right back in here again.”

Another potential bonus from the program, Nocco added, is the possibility of gaining intelligence regarding ongoing criminal activity outside jail cells.

“We gain a lot of information through these tablets. We know who’s putting money into their accounts, we know who they’re talking to, and we can read their emails,” Nocco explained.

ROADS, from page 1A “Obviously, we want to keep moving forward with that,” said Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore.

The $1.5 million that will be sought to beautify Land O’ Lakes Boulevard would pay for “targeted landscaping and placemaking projects,” according to the draft version of the county’s state legislative agenda.

The boulevard is the main corridor running through the Land O’ Lakes community.

The beautification plan would begin at the county line on North Dale Mabry Highway, cross State Road 54, and then head north to State Road 52 toward Brooksville and Hernando County.

It will be similar to a project along U.S. 19 in west Pasco, with a focus on medians and intersections.

“It’s a great opportunity to work to help revitalize this area and give a real, positive change to residents and businesses there,” Moore said. “It’s needed, and it’s well-deserved for the area.”

Another $2 million will be sought to complete the Gateway Beautification Plan for landscaping and monument signs at the north and south county lines on U.S. 19.

Perez, for one, believes an app that teaches basic life skills “would be very helpful” for fellow inmates.

“Some guys here can’t even reconcile a bank account or fill out a job application,” he said.

“Some of them could benefit from an app that could teach a basic work skill, or just teach them about doing the right thing, getting up on time, going to work,” he said.

Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey is pushing to add a funding request to aid the county in buying land for the proposed Orange Belt trail, that would run through Land O’ Lakes.

She is asking that the county seek matching funds for this project, with the county pledging an amount to be determined before the legislative session begins.

Starkey said it could be easier to win approval if the county also puts up its money.

“We need to get started (on this) before the land is bought up and compromised,” she added.

Pasco County’s legislative delegation will have a public meeting on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to noon, at Sunlake High School, 3023 Sunlake Blvd.The annual meeting gives the public a chance to discuss projects and bills that they would like to see approved.

Other funding requests from the county in 2018 will include: • $1 million for a planning and development study for the U.S. 301/U.S. 98/Clinton Avenue intersection realignment • $5 million for an Advanced Traffic Management System for State Road 54 and State Road 56 to adjust traffic signal times and improve traffic flow • $500,000 for a navigation center that will aid the homeless population

A loan of slightly more than $20 million from Bank United will finance the construction of the proposed Wesley Chapel Sports Park, at Wiregrass Ranch.

RADD Sports will operate and manage the complex. Pasco County will own the indoor sports facility, collect rent, and also share in the anticipated profits.

In addition to the 98,000- square-foot indoor facility, seven outdoor sports fields, an amphitheater with an event lawn, trails, pavilions and a playground are planned.

The county also has approved a ground lease for a 128-room Marriott Residence Inn to be built with private funds at the complex.

A 2 percent increase in Pasco County’s tourism tax will serve as collateral for the loan.The Pasco County Commission previously approved the increase, bringing the tourism tax to a total of 4 percent.

The tax is collected as an add-on to rent from hotel rooms. Revenues from the “heads on beds” tax supports tourism promotion in Pasco. How much, if any, of the additional tourism tax dollars would be spent to repay the loan depend on revenues generated by tournaments and other events at the complex.

Views varied.

The mother of a 27-year-old who has been addicted to drugs for 10 years said she wants to help in her son’s recovery and to be his health care advocate.

But, others said that the patient should be the one to determine who is permitted access to his or her medical records.

Others in the audience said there needs to be more communication about support groups and low-cost services available to people struggling with addiction or recovering from substance abuse.

Even Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey, who supported the loan and serves as the council’s chairwoman, had problems with the lack of the council’s role.

In recent months, she said the council hasn’t been able to operate at full strength due to vacancies.

“It’s unfortunate that this never went to the (Tourist Development Council), but when this all went down, we were down to one person on the council,” she said.“We really need to take them into consideration when scheduling next time.”

But, she said, “I think it’s time to move forward. I have faith that this is going to be a great addition to Pasco.”

People in the crowd also reminded Bilirakis that while the opioid crisis is getting significant attention, Pasco County also has a problem with people abusing meth, alcohol and Xanax, among other things.

Speakers told Bilirakis there needs to be more trust placed in health care professionals who can determine the best course of treatment for a patient.

That isn’t happening, though, in an environment when issues tend to be “silo-d,” and there are too many restrictions on funding, they said.

he 2017 high school football season is finally underway. As the games unfold, here’s a look at some of the teams and players to watch in The Laker/Lutz News coverage area:

TEAMS TO WATCH:

What’s New? The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) passed a new system last September that bases football postseason berths on a points system in Class A-4A. The new format, beginning this season, is designed to reward teams for winning records and strength of schedule.

In the FHSAA’s biggest four classes (5A8A), the district champion still automatically qualifies for regionals, with the remaining 16 spots decided by points.

STEINBRENNER HIGH WARRIORS Coach: Andres Perez-Reinaldo (6th year)

Despite some key departures from last year’s 5-4 squad — including starting quarterback Colin Wray’s defection to Clearwater Central Catholic— the Warriors look primed for a third straight winning season.That was evident in their Aug. 28 season opener, a 19-0 road shutout of Freedom High School. If that game is any indication, Steinbrenner features a strong running game led by senior Dionte Waldron and freshman Deon Silas, and big-play receivers in senior Brandon Garcia and sophomore Aidan Bitter.The Warriors have no shortage of playmakers on defense, either. Besides the return of a pair of tackling machines in senior linebacker/safety Charles Stephens (99 tackles in 2016) and senior defensive tackle Juan Batista (87 total tackles in 2016), the Warriors have others — including senior end Cade Murray and junior linebacker Logan Kilburn— capable of making stops behind the line of scrimmage.

The Warriors still need to find a steady, reliable presence at quarterback, especially with difficult matchups remaining against the likes of Jesuit, Bradenton Manatee, Sarasota Riverview and Tampa Catholic high schools.

Sunlake has seven straight winning seasons under head coach Bill Browning.

SUNLAKE HIGH SEAHAWKS Coach: Bill Browning (11th year)

It’s tough to doubt the Sunlake Seahawks and its run of seven straight winning seasons — each with at least seven victories.

However, the consistent program may be in for a slight rebuilding campaign after losing

numerous contributors on offense and defense from last year’s 7-3 squad. Besides developing a new quarterback in either senior Ryan Kasper or junior Hunter Watts, dynamic playmakers on offense also need to emerge. Similar questions remain on defense, as the Seahawks replace three of its top four tacklers from last season.

Meanwhile, Sunlake’s schedule doesn’t get any easier, with matchups against Wiregrass Ranch, Springstead, Brooksville Central and River Ridge high schools.

WIREGRASS RANCH HIGH BULLS Coach: Mark Kantor (3rd year)

Wiregrass Ranch appears to be one of the top teams in the Tampa Bay area, even after a tumultuous offseason that saw three of its top players — cornerback Shamaur McDowell, athlete Raymond Woodie III, tailback Da Da McGee — transfer elsewhere.

The team’s strength was evident in the Bulls memorable 31-29 season-opening victory over Zephyrhills High, where their talent and moxie reigned supreme. Junior quarterback Grant Sessums, in his first year as a starter, could emerge to become one of the county’s most productive signal-callers, especially with a senior-laden group of pass-catchers, in A.J. Brown, Devaun Roberts and Daniel Biglow. Establishing a capable running game also could go a long way in Sessums’ and Wiregrass’ success.The Bulls, meanwhile, return one of the region’s top players in versatile, ball-hawking cornerback Jordan Miner, a Penn State University commit. Besides roaming the defensive backfield, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete also is utilized on offense and kickoff returns.

CORNERBACK — Jordan Miner, Wiregrass Ranch High senior

Like Bolden, Miner is another a blue chip, four-star cornerback committed to a high-profile college program (Penn State University). Nationally, the 6-foot-1, 180pound Miner is ranked among the top 30

ZEPHYRHILLS HIGH BULLDOGS Coach: Nick Carroll (2nd year) One of the county’s most successful programs of late, Zephyrhills has the talent and depth to secure a fourth straight playoff appearance. It all starts with senior dual-threat quarterback Charles Harrison III, the county’s top returning signal-caller (2,038 total yards, 26 total touchdowns, five interceptions in 2016). And, there’s no lack of weapons at Harrison’s disposal, with the return of leading rusher Elijah Thomas (649 yards, five touchdowns) and leading receivers Tre’Pavis Mobley (39 catches, 802 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Ja’quan Sheppard (25 catches, 443 yards, six touchdowns).

Defensively, the Bulldogs return two of their top pass rushers from 2016 — Sterlin Williams (8.5 sacks) and Ja’varrius Wilson (eight sacks)— along with senior middle linebacker Zac Masci (66 tackles, 2.5 sacks) and senior safety Myles Carter (25 tackles, five tackles for loss, two interceptions).

Meanwhile, the rest of the season sets up relatively nicely for the Bulldogs, with manageable matchups against teams like Ridgewood, Fivay, Gulf, Anclote and Pasco high schools.

The Warriors are proving last season’s 7-2 mark wasn’t a fluke, especially after downing Bishop McLaughlin 35-6 in its Aug. 25 home opener. The Warriors, competing in Class 2A for the first time, feature one of the county’s most prolific ground attacks, led by seniors Calvin Samuel (695 yards, seven touchdowns in 2016) and Alonzo Sampson, and Pasco High transfer Javion Hanner — each capable of explosive plays. The Warriors, too, feature a handful of impact players on defense, anchored by 300-pound sophomore defensive lineman Malik Jones and 215-pound junior linebacker/defensive end Jalen Spencer. One of the more intriguing tests for the Warriors will be on Oct. 13, when they face Carrollwood Day School at home.

RECEIVER — Ja’quan Sheppard, Zephyrhills High junior

One of Zephyrhills High’s many offensive playmakers, the 6-foot-2, 176-pound Sheppard is a dynamic threat, both as a receiver (25 catches, 443 yards, Ja’quan Sheppard six touchdowns in 2016) and ball carrier (325 yards, five touchdowns). Besides having reliable hands, Sheppard has shown the capability for chunk plays of 40 yards and 50 yards. He currently has an offer from Samford University, a Division I Football Championship Series (FCS) program in Homewood,Alabama.

WESLEY CHAPEL HIGH SCHOOL WILDCATS Coach: Tony Egan (2nd year)

Besides having arguably the county’s top do-everything athlete in Isaiah Bolden (University of Oregon commit), the Wildcats have several pieces returning to a team that won its first seven games in 2016, before faltering down the stretch with road losses to Zephyrhills and River Ridge high schools.

It has a potent running game led by 1,000-yard rusher Dexter Leverett and Malik Melvin (358 yards, seven touchdowns).

With Bolden returning at cornerback, the Wildcats defense also features several other standouts, including inside linebacker Austen Wittish (93 tackles in 2016) and 6foot-7 defensive end/Florida State University commit Chaz Neal.

The looming question is finding consistency at quarterback following the graduation of two-year starter Jacob Thomas.

RUNNING BACK/DEFENSIVE BACK — Dexter Leverett, Wesley Chapel High senior The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Leverett was Pasco County’s third-leading rusher in 2016, tallying 1,254 yards and 10 touchdowns on just 165 carries Dexter Leverett (7.6 yards per carry). And, he displayed consistency, with nine games of at least 100 yards.

Wesley Chapel head coach Tony Egan summed up Leverett’s rushing ability in an interview last season:“He’s got it all. He’s a power back, he’s explosive, and he’s got that top-end speed—the kid runs a 4.53 40 (yard dash). He’s just a really quick kid…and he can make cuts in the open field.”

Leverett is not just an offensive star. He’s also a key cog on defense, where he posted 75 total tackles last season.

Girl Scouts rejuvenate Karina’s Garden

tep into the garden behind the administrative offices of Sunrise of Pasco, in Dade City, and you’ll find a place where flowers, plants, butterflies and statuary offer a place of repose and refreshment.

You’ve arrived at Karina’s Garden.

The garden initially was established in 2008 to honor Karina Abdul, a former shelter director for Sunrise of Pasco who died unexpectedly at the age of 29.

Over the years, plants became sparse and weeds took over.

So, when Troop No. 1263, of Wesley Chapel, was looking for a way to complete the requirements for a Girl Scout Silver Award, giving new life to the garden seemed to be an ideal project.

The trio of Girl Scouts — Paige and Kaitlin Traboulay, and Alyssa Duran — heard about Karina’s Garden from Kelly Mothershead, of the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel, who has worked with the girls on other projects.

“They decided they wanted to come in and transform this space.That’s what they did,” said Vicki Wiggins, director of development for Sunrise.

The Girl Scouts, their parents and other volunteers rolled up their sleeves and got busy. They ripped out weeds, built mulch paths, added pavers, painted fences, installed benches and added plants.

They celebrated the garden’s completion at a gathering in August. Besides the volunteers, friends and Sunrise staff members, local members of Karina’s family were there, too.

“The family was thrilled,”Wiggins said.

Wiggins is impressed by the volunteers’ commitment.

“They’ve been raising money for about a year.They came out.They took pictures and designed it all,” she said.

“Apparently, Karina loved butterflies, so they made sure they incorporated a lot of plants (that attract butterflies),”Wiggins said.

“They did a really great job picking out things. I think the parents worked as hard as the kids.

“They started the weekend after July Fourth,”Wiggins said.“Everything that you can see that’s not a weed, they’ve added.

“They put the pavers in. They put this structure here that has the birdhouse on it.

They added the fencing here.They repainted the wall. They added the butterflies (decorations).”

Local artist Lisa Tesla volunteered her talents to give a new look to a dilapidated wooden door in the garden that had been covered in weeds and vines. Her artistry transformed the door into an inviting focal point.

Chris Wirt, of A All Animal Control of Tampa Bay, cleared the garden of two black racer snakes before the trio of scouts got to work.

Sunil Mohammed, of Totally Blu H2O, stepped up to provide garden tools.

Another volunteer, Karen Weiss, made the sign that credits the people who helped on the project.

Paige Traboulay said the girls began planning the project at the end of last year.

“We walked in the garden, and we saw how big it was and how much needed to be done,” said the 12-year-old, who attends John Long Middle School.

“We asked them what Karina liked.They said she liked butterflies, so we tried to focus on that. So, there’s a butterfly on the door, and there are butterflies on the fences.”

There are butterfly plants in the garden, as well.

Kaitlin Traboulay, who attends Land O’ Lakes High School, said the work was mostly done by her family and Alyssa’s family over the course of two weekends.

work, and it was hot.

When they finished, she said,“I was especially happy because that meant no more bug bites.”

Paige added:“After the project was done, there was these butterflies flying around to each station. We thought it was her (Karina).”

The garden now provides a place to take a break and enjoy nature,Wiggins said.

“Sometimes the office can generate anxiety and a lot of stress for folks.This is a place where they can de-stress.They can just sit and watch the butterflies, and relax.

“It’s beautiful. I’m so happy they did this.

They brought it back to life,”Wiggins said.

Pasco County Animal Services, 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes, accepts donations to help the shelter pets.

The shelter’s wish list includes snap-closure dog collars; dog and cat treats; cat toys; blankets, sheets and towels; liquid laundry soap; pet shampoo; cat hideaway boxes; small beds for cats; kitten bottles and formula; heating pads; and, Kong dog toys.

Donations can be dropped off at the Adoption Center during operating hours.

Pasco County Animal Services offers these tips for lost and found pets.

If a pet is lost: • Visit the shelter to visually look for your missing pet.

• If your pet is chipped, contact the chip company to ensure all information is up to date.

• Create lost flyers and post them in your area.

• Create a report on one of these websites: FidoFinder.com or TabbyTracker.com.

Also, check Petango.com, as all animals impounded in the shelter are posted immediately.

Lost/found cats: The shelter does not typically accept stray and feral cats, as there is no leash law for cats in the county. Cats that are accepted must meet specific criteria: • Cats found outside that are declawed (front, back or both) • Sick/injured • Too young/too old to fend for themselves • Cats that have bitten or scratched a person If a pet is found: • Visit the shelter to have the pet scanned for a chip.

• Post flyers in your neighborhood.

• Surrender the pet to the shelter in an attempt to find the owners.

• Fill out a decline to release form and keep the pet at your home while you look for the owner.

• Post on Facebook and Craigslist.

• Post on Lost/Found Pet websites, such as FidoFinder.com or TabbyTracker.com.

This little girl was found as a stray in the New Port Richey area last week.

She’s so new that she doesn’t even have a name yet. Maybe her new owner could pick a name for her? Since arriving, she has been extremely sweet and social. She craves being petted, which the volunteers happily provide. What she really needs, though, is a family. She is a sweet mediumsize pup that weighs only about 50 pounds. She doesn’t seem to mind other dogs passing along the fence line, but the shelter always recommends a meet-and-greet.

BEXLEY BY NEWLAND COMMUNITIES WINS AWARD

The Southeast Building Conference awarded Bexley by Newland Communities a Grand Aurora Award, as the top Master Planned Community in the Southeast.

The Bexley Club, the community’s hub, also earned a Grand Aurora Award for Best Recreational Facility, according to a press release from The Leytham Group.

Award winners were selected from entries in 12 southeastern states and the eastern Caribbean. The winners were announced during the annual Southeast Building Conference in Orlando.

Bexley is owned in partnership between North America Sekisui House LLC and the Newland Real Estate Group.
