Decorated war veteran receives new home The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Army Cpl. Jesse Murphree and his family moved into a new mortgage-free home in Land O’ Lakes on Sept. 12, following a homecoming celebration.

Joining the decorated military veteran were representatives from Building Homes for Heroes, military personnel, members of the construction team, corporate sponsor, members of local organizations, family, friends and others, according to a news release.

A crowd gathered to celebrate with Murphree, his wife, Ashlee, and son, Brody, as they moved into their new home on Lago Vista Circle in Land O’ Lakes.

Murphree joined the military in 2005 after his family in New York City was affected by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, according to a news release from Building Homes for Heroes.

The Rotary Club of Land O’ Lakes used to operate independently.

Then, the club merged with the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Noon, and now the Land O’ Lakes group has become a satellite club of the Wesley Chapel group.

As the Land O’ Lakes group gains strength, it plans to become a stand-alone club again, said Terri Dusek, who chairs the committee for the current satellite group.

The group wants to function as a Land O’ Lakes club because it recognizes needs within the Land O’ Lakes community, and it wants to play a role in helping to meet them, Dusek said.

Jewish community reflects, atones on Yom Kippur

Congregation Mekor Shalom, 14005A N. Dale Mabry Highway, has grown to more than 100 households since it was founded a little more than two years ago.

Members come from Lutz, from Land O’ Lakes, from Wesley Chapel, from Zephyrhills, and many other parts of Tampa Bay. And most of those households, if not all, will be stopping in on Wednesday, during the one time on the calendar where everyone comes together.

“I call it tax season for clergy,” said Hazzan Jodi Sered-Lever.

As Hazzan, she’s Mekor Shalom’s clergy who leads them in prayer. She’s also their founding spiritual leader.

The occasion is Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, which is Sept. 23 this year. Part of the High Holy Days, along with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, it’s considered by many to be the most significant date on the Jewish calendar.

While it’s a time for reflection and forgiveness, it’s definitely not a time for judging the congregation at Mekor Shalom.

Sered-Lever knows the seats will be filled more than during the weekly Sabbath services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Whether it’s a treasured family tradition or a sense of obligation to participate in the High Holidays, many members who don’t attend services regularly are looking for a seat at Yom Kippur.

And that’s fine for Sered-Lever. Whether someone attends every weekend, or hasn’t been there since the last Yom Kippur service, she wants everyone to feel welcomed and valued.

“I don’t use guilt in any of my religious practices. I meet people where they’re at,” she said. “I’m glad to see you when you’re here. I’m glad to have your involvement; I’m glad to have your gifts. Because each person’s gifts are appreciated, and they’re not just monetary, and they’re not just numbers showing up.”

Those who do attend will arrive in a different state than usual. Yom Kippur observers fast from the previous sundown until that day’s sundown (with medical exceptions), refrain from working or wearing leather shoes, do not bathe and do not anoint themselves in perfume or cologne. They forego many daily comforts and rituals in order to focus more on asking for forgiveness, not only to God, but to other people their actions may have affected over the past year. Much of the day is spent in prayer and reflection.

And they’ll not only pray, but hear the Hazzan speak on a special topic. She didn’t reveal this year’s subject, but previously

she’s focused on the concept of a proper apology. Instead of a half-hearted “I’m sorry you feel that way” statement, she encouraged her congregation to take ownership in their apologies, and to deliver them with authenticity.

Whether they come to pray on Yom Kippur out of a sense of tradition once a year, or always attend weekly services, Sered-Lever wants every member to get the most out of the experience. She believes that true reflection on actions and behaviors, and an earnest desire to improve oneself, can have great benefits for an individual even after Yom Kippur ends.

“You get out of it what you put into it,” Sered-Lever said. “If you take this time and really use it for this purpose, you have the greatest chance of being able to evolve as a person, and develop your relationships and connections, and be the best person you can be.”

Wildlife corridors on hold, again

A plan to establish and protect wildlife corridors met another delay in its 15-year journey from a lawsuit settlement to approval from the Pasco County Commission.

During a workshop on Sept. 15, Pasco County commissioners opted to forego upcoming public hearings in October and November. The hearings were for a proposed ordinance to establish criteria and regulations for seven proposed wildlife corridors that, in part, would pass through private lands.

Instead, the matter will go back to the county’s Local Planning Agency for more discussion. The agency’s members previously tabled the matter without making a recommendation to the Pasco County commission on the ordinance. No new date for the agenda item was scheduled.

Also, county officials plan to schedule a fifth public workshop to get more input on the ordinance. Another workshop for commissioners also will be scheduled to provide additional information including maintenance costs for the corridors and ballpark figures on the cost of choosing to establish the corridors through eminent domain rather than the ordinance.

The maze of hearings and workshops is only the latest for a hot-potato issue that has been tossed around by several Pasco County commissions since a lawsuit settlement in 2000.

“We are eager to come to a resolution on this,” said Matt Armstrong, Pasco’s executive planner for the Long Range Planning Group. “We don’t want it to be hanging around there another 15 years.”

The sticking point is how to strike a balance between conservation and property rights, including compensation for land acquired by the county for the corridors.

The proposed ordinance would be applied only if a landowner sought to rezone property for land uses of greater density or intensity, and had a corridor within the property’s boundaries.

In such cases, the county and landowner would provide property appraisals and reach agreement on a sales price through negotiation. Landowners also would have appeal rights before the Development Review Committee.

The county estimates a need for about 7,000 acres to create the wildlife corridors.

Subtracting land the county already owns

and some undevelopable wetlands, county officials say only about 2,500 acres would be regulated through the ordinance.

The corridors in central Pasco would link current and proposed development projects at Starkey Ranch, Crossbar, Connerton and Cypress Creek.

However, Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore said “everyday average citizens” have concerns about what could happen to their property.

“Their concern is that I’m not going to be allowed to do what I need to survive, to pay my bills,” he said. “They can’t grow oranges. They can’t grow citrus. I’m just not ready to go full force on this.”

The mandate to create the wildlife corridors – also known as critical linkages – comes from a lawsuit filed in the late 1990s that challenged the county’s land use plan.

The suit centered on the then-proposed development of the Oakstead subdivision, off State Road 54.

Oakstead went forward, but the settlement agreement required the county to adopt conservation measures including the wildlife corridors. A task force recommended creation of the county’s Environmental Lands Acquisition and Management Program, also known as ELAMP. But ELAMP, which is a voluntary system of acquiring land, isn’t sufficient on its own to protect the wildlife corridors, said David Armstrong, assistant county attorney.

If commissioners choose not to adopt the ordinance, acquiring land through eminent domain is the next option, he said.

“It’s more expensive,”Armstrong said.

A guesstimate on eminent domain costs can be provided to commissioners, said Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker.

She also noted that unless the county owned easements through private land, the corridors would not be open to the general public for recreation.

If anyone wanted to try bicycling the corridors, the answer would have to be ‘No you can’t. It’s still private property,’ ” Baker said.

About $36 million from the Penny for Pasco revenues were set aside to purchase conservation land, with about $17 million invested to date. The ELAMP program has been extended another 10 years, and funds could be used to purchase other properties.

A decision on the ordinance is critical, especially given the renewed burst of development in Pasco County,Armstrong added.

“Once it develops, it’s not coming back.”

Pasco Tax Collector Mike Fasano and his staff teamed up with the Community Volunteer Corps to collect food, clothing and hygiene items for homeless children in Pasco County.

The Community Volunteer Corps’ mission is to support Pasco County students in the Students in Transition Program by providing basic supplies to allow homeless students to stay in school. Cash donations are used to purchase needed hygiene and related items. Donations of school supplies, clothing and personal care items are given, in conjunction with the Pasco County School District, directly to homeless students who are in need.

For each $5 raised, the corps assembles a hygiene kit for one child. A total of $6,924.93 in cash, clothing and supplies recently was raised. Hispanic Heritage contest seeks entries The New Tampa Regional Library is seeking entries for the Hispanic Heritage Art contest.

Each year, the Hillsborough County Public Library system celebrates Hispanic Heritage month with its popular bookmark and poster contests.

Last year, more than 1,000 bookmarks and almost 200 posters were entered. Eight contestants then were awarded prizes for first place and second place, based upon the caliber of their work.

The contest is open to any Hillsborough County student. Winners will have their work appear on a Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) bus. Winning entries also will receive professionally printed posters and bookmarks.

There are no specific criteria or guidelines that the contestants must follow.

The judges choose finalists based on what is most visually appealing. They look at the originality across the spectrum and at what really pops out.

Last year's contests brought in a huge audience, which pleased the contestants and families that took part in the event. School specialist, Dana Warner, expects the same high turnout and positive reaction this year.

Participants may pick up an entry form at any library branch or from the library's website at HCPLC.org. Entries are due no later than Sept. 30.

Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point has recognized its second quarter volunteers with Star Awards.

Volunteers honored with a Five Star award were Christopher Marshall, Margaret “Naida” Flynn and Thomas Devine.

Marshall has been a courier with the hospital since September 2000, and has logged more than 2,197 merit hours.

Flynn has greeted visitors at Welcome Center A every Tuesday and Friday since January 2013, and has earned more than 964 merit hours.

Devine began volunteering at the hospital in April 2002 as a courier, and has accumulated a total of 2,830 merit hours.

Virginia Fournier was recognized with a One Star award. Fournier has been a volunteer since June 2013, and has 4,375 merit hours working as a courier dispatcher and in the gift shop.

Oasis Pregnancy Care Centers will host its annual “Legacy of Life Celebration” on Oct. 1 at Spartan Manor, 6121 Massachusetts Ave., in New Port Richey. Doors open at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m., and a program at 7:15 p.m.

In recent weeks, Morgan has hired landscapers to spruce up the course, mowing grass and clearing undergrowth.

Part of his management program for the course is to provide lawn services that would generate revenues to help with golf course operations.

Residents would choose a landscaper from a “preferred provider” list of companies that would work for Morgan, according to the blog.

“The primary focus is on selling landscaping services bundled with club memberships both inside and outside of Plantation Palms,” the blog states.

The Land O’ Lakes group also would like to take over the duties of serving a Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day at the Keystone Community Church, on State Road 54 near U.S. 41, Dusek said.

“The reason it’s a ‘Why now’ to be quite honest with you is because when I joined the Rotary, I thought I was joining the Land O’ Lakes Rotary, and then I found out I was joining the Wesley Chapel Rotary because they had merged,” Dusek said.

She didn’t have a problem with it, but she realized that the service projects the club was doing were in Wesley Chapel, she said.

That made sense, because that’s where the club met, but she felt there were needs in Land O’ Lakes that a Land O’ Lakes club could address.

“We feel there’s plenty to do in Land O’ Lakes,” Graves agreed.

As the economy improves, the women thought it made sense to revive the service club.

“I think we needed to re-energize,” Graves said.

So far, the group has about 20 members, but it hopes to attract more, Dusek said.

Joining the group costs about $1,000 each year.That covers the weekly breakfasts, and a portion goes the Rotary Foundation and to Rotary International, she said.

The group’s goals are still being formulated.

“We have the support of the Wesley Chapel group, which has a little bit over 100 members now. If we need assistance, or we need help from them, they’re like our mother club, and they will give us assistance,” Dusek said.

Record-setting start for Steinbrenner football

The Steinbrenner High School coaching staff knew its team was special when it defeated Riverview High School by a 38-17 margin on Sept. 18. That gave the Warriors a 4-0 start for the first time in school history, and eclipsed the team’s win total from last year’s entire season, when it won just three games.

But coaches also knew the team was special when it defeated Chamberlain on Sept. 11 to go 3-0.

And, the week before, when the team defeated Blake High School to go 2-0.

The team had never done those things before, either.

In fact, it became the first varsity team at the school to even start 1-0 with an opening win against Gaither High School. (The team’s first victory in its inaugural season in 2009 counted as a junior varsity victory).

Head coach Andres Perez-Reinaldo had an inkling about their potential a lot earlier than the start of the regular season. In fact, the realization dawned on him late last year.

“I had a good feeling last December,” he recalled. “We were planning on starting our off-season conditioning in January. I had a group of these seniors come up to me and say ‘Hey coach, we want to start now, in December.’ When those kids do that and take that kind of initiative, that lets you know you have a special thing going on.”

If the team has been special, its defense has been spectacular. The defense gave up 17 to Riverview and allowed 10 points to Chamberlain, but previous outings were even better. Neither Blake (31-0) nor Gaither (13-0) put up any points against the Warriors.

The coach admits that a stifling defense is a big key to the team’s success and keeping opponents frustrated.

“Our defense right now is the heart and soul of the team,” he said. “If they (opponents) can’t score, they can’t win.”

It’s a philosophy that resonates with the players, and gets repeated frequently.

“As the defense we knew that we were going to really be the glue of the team. If they don’t score, they’re not going to win,”

said middle linebacker Patrick Lukert in a separate interview.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound senior has helped the team off to its impressive start, but he’s not surprised. He expected to see scoreboard success after watching the players come together and focus before the games started. He just thought it would happen with a different quarterback.

WHARTON’S WILDCATS KEEP WINNING IN VOLLEYBALL

Preseason Classic, meaning backup Colin Wray had to step in with little notice and perform.

He’s led the team to an undefeated record, the most wins in one season since 2012 and an opportunity to think about the school’s first-ever playoff berth.

Again, Lukert said he isn’t surprised.

“We have confidence in Colin. Colin’s been practicing just like Cason has. Since last December he’s been working out. We knew he was going to be all right,” he said.

The coach credits the entire offense for helping pick up the slack with a new quarterback behind center.

“Those guys, that wide receiver corps and offensive line and running backs have just rallied around our quarterback position, making him the best that he can (be). And that support has been huge for him,” PerezReinaldo said.

A strong start has created a lot of optimism and excitement, and the coach said it’s a product of athletes taking classwork seriously and buying into the program. It’s a lot of hard work, but after coaching for about 10 years (this is his fourth season at Steinbrenner), Perez-Reinaldo said it’s still fun.

otorists zipping along Interstate 4 between Tampa and Orlando can’t see from their ribbon of asphalt how close they are to the wild side of Florida.

But the Green Swamp is all around.

Often called the “liquid heart” of the state, the swamp is headwaters for four major rivers: Peace, Withlacoochee, Ocklawaha and Hillsborough.

Natural habitat, hiking trails, blueways and wildlife corridors spread across Polk, Lake, Sumter, Hernando and Pasco counties.

“This is wild Florida history in plain site,” said Carlton Ward Jr., a conservation photojournalist whose photographic art captures the beauty of the state’s wild side and its Cracker history of cowboys and ranches.

On Sept. 15, more than 100 people filled the Selby Auditorium on the campus of Saint Leo University for a presentation on the Florida Wildlife Corridor Expeditions, in 2012 and 2015.

Saint Leo’s School of Arts and Sciences, departments of Language Studies and the Arts, and Mathematics and Science sponsored the event.

“He is a very accomplished speaker, combining words and pictures that allow us to hear clearly the importance of conservation,” said Mary Spoto, the dean of Arts and Sciences. “It’s something good for our students to hear and also the public.”

The first expedition of 1,000 miles in 100 days traversed peninsular Florida from the Everglades National Park to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in southern Georgia.

The most recent expedition of 1,000 miles in 70 days began in January, following a path from central Florida, across the Panhandle to Alabama, ending at the Gulf Island National Seashore. Along the way

The goal is to bring awareness about the need to protect and connect Florida’s rural lands, its waterways and the natural paths to habitats traveled by Florida’s diverse wildlife, including the Florida black bear and the Florida panther.

Ward sees his photographs as a way to connect art’s inspiration with science’s knowledge.

He collaborated with bear biologist Joe Guthrie and environmentalist Mallory Lykes Dimmitt on the “Florida Wildlife Expedition Corridor,” a book chronicling the 2012 expedition. A second book on the 2015 expedition will be published in November.

“I’ve always had a connection to conservation,” Ward said.
