Economic forecast is bright, expert says

The forecast for both the United States and the world economy appear to be “pretty sunny” this year.

At least that’s the word from Tim McGee, director of macro strategy and research at U.S. Trust-Bank of America Wealth Management.

McGee offered that assessment during the Pasco Economic Development Council’s annual economic forecast luncheon recently at Hyatt Place Tampa/Wesley Chapel.

At Bank of America, McGee manages a team of analysts that research global economic trends, and then develop those trends into investment strategies for individual clients, institutions and foundations supporting the wealth management business.

McGee’s economic outlook, delivered to a sold-out luncheon, contained predictions that should inspire confidence on the whole.

The global economy will “grow a little bit faster than it did last year,” McGee said.

Pasco County Administrator Michele Baker expects to be very busy over the next year and a half.

She’ll be crossing off a to-do list, one by one, before leaving in 2017 to go on a lengthy road trip with her husband.

The couple will hit the road with their recreational vehicle and their motorcycles, on a tour of as many baseball parks and national parks as they can squeeze into a year.

“That’s been our dream,” Baker said, so letting her contract lapse in July 2017 makes sense.

But, don’t expect a lame duck administrator.

New subdivision approved off Bell Lake Road in Land O’ Lakes

The Pasco County Commission has approved a rezoning for a 27-home subdivision, at the northwest intersection of Bell Lake and Alpine roads.

The site for the proposed subdivision is about 1 mile east of U.S. 41, in Land O’ Lakes.

The approval will allow houses with a minimum of 40-foot-wide lots to be built on the 9.5-acre site.

The board’s vote, at its Feb. 4 meeting, was the second time it approved the request.

A previous vote, taken on Jan. 7, was voided after it was discovered an error had been made on the public notice of that meeting.

Todd Pressman, representing the applicant, said plans call for a rental home community.

The price points of the homes being

constructed there would be in mid-200s to mid-300s, he said, but they are being built for a segment of the market that prefers renting to home ownership.

Pressman showed the board a power point with representations of the type of houses that American Homes 4 Rent plans to build.

Several neighbors spoke against the requested rezoning. They said the lot size is incompatible with surrounding developments.

They also cited concerns about the condition of area roads that would serve the subdivision. Other worries include potential impacts on the area’s drainage, and potential safety hazards for children because the area lacks sidewalks.

One of their biggest concerns, though, was the fact that the company building the homes specializes in rental homes.

Will cross-county commuters have a new option?

Commuters in Pasco, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties could have a new way to get around, as planning continues on a proposed 41-mile bus route connecting the counties.

The plan being considered calls for designated rapid bus transit lanes to be built along the shoulders of Interstate 75 and Interstate 275.

The route would run from Pasco to Hillsborough County — beginning at State Road 54 in Wesley Chapel, heading south to the University of South Florida and ending in downtown Tampa.The system also would See COMMUTERS, page 15A

Learning to live with Lewy Body Dementia

Although Lewy Body Dementia has no known cure, identifying its symptoms and employing specific techniques can heighten a patient’s safety.

Gary Joseph LeBlanc, a public speaker for the Dementia Spotlight Foundation, provided an educational presentation on Feb. 5 about the disease at Atria Lutz, an assisted living facility.

Lewy Body Dementia is one of several diseases that inflicts dementia upon people, causing brain degeneration and memory loss.

It’s the second most progressive form of dementia, behind Alzheimer’s disease, affecting 1.4 million Americans, according to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

The condition occurs when protein deposits, called Lewy bodies, build up in the brain.

These areas of the brain regulate behavior, cognition and movement.

The dementia is named after Frederich H. Lewy, a neurologist who discovered the protein deposits in the brain in the early 1900s.

“When these people get to the end of these diseases – their brain is not going to tell their organs how to function anymore,” LeBlanc said.

There are instances when Lewy Body can be underdiagnosed because it shares some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, he said.

Lewy Body and Alzheimer’s both bring about cognitive or memory disorders.

However, Lewy Body affects cognition as it relates to problem solving and complex reasoning.

Alzheimer’s on the other hand affects cognition as it relates to making new experiences into memories.

The symptoms of Lewy Body and Parkinson’s are a hunched posture, stiff muscles, a shuffling walk and trouble initiating movement.

Those who experience dementia within one year of Parkinson’s symptoms are typically diagnosed with Lewy Body.

But, when Parkinson’s symptoms go into effect after a year, patients are usually diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

Other symptoms of Lewy Body include: • Declined thinking or reasoning • Confusion that varies from day to day • Hallucinations • Delusions • Sleep disturbances Another symptom associated with Lewy Body is called sundowning, where one becomes more confused or agitated during the afternoon or later in the evening.

It is best to keep individuals who exhibit signs of sundowning productive during the earlier part of the day, LeBlanc said.

Not recognizing faces or surroundings, can cause a patient to experience anxiety.

Signs of such anxiety can include sweaty hands or feet, shortness of breath or heart palpitations.

“If your loved one is tossing and turning, the chances are this is probably all anxietyrelated,” LeBlanc said. “If we can control anxiety and depression, [you’re] going to see a whole new patient out of this person.”

Physicians can provide the necessary medications for these symptoms, he said.

The speaker also explained the term ‘elopement,’ which is when a patient wanders away from a safe environment.

That person will typically steer in the direction of their dominant hand, LeBlanc explained.

“If not found in 72 hours, the survival rate is down by 20%,” he said.

The File for Life packet is used in these situations or when a patient is found unconscious in their home.

File for Life is a magnetic pouch where important documents can be placed and put on the refrigerator.

It may provide helpful information to law enforcement, firefighters or search parties about a patient, when lost.

There also are methods that can be beneficial to the patient.

LeBlanc also touched on using redirection to divert a patient’s attention when they are upset. Giving them an activity, such as folding clothes, or showing them old photos to help spark memories, can be helpful.

Setting a routine is important, too, he said.

Daily meals at a specific time at the same location can help keep a patient on track and can help reduce anxiety.

He also recommends keeping the patient social by going outdoors, and he said it’s good to speak to them daily.

However, do not bombard him or her with long sentences, he said. Break them down one small sentence at a time, so the patient can better comprehend what you’re trying to convey, LeBlanc said.

At times, a patient might do some mental time traveling, where he or she believes they’re in a past time or place in their life.

It’s good to explain to that individual what the current date is, but don’t force the issue, LeBlanc said.

Sometimes you have to acclimate to the patient’s reality.

“If the facts don’t matter to him or her, they should not matter to us,” LeBlanc said.

When addressing a patient, it’s more effective to say “we” as opposed to “you,” he added.That helps the patient to view a task as a team effort, which tends to result in a greater likelihood of cooperation.

SMARTstart helps Pasco entrepreneurs get off the ground

Ever wanted to create your own business or startup?

If you do, the Pasco Economic Development Council’s (Pasco EDC) SMARTstart program may be able to lend a hand, or two.

Essentially, the program is designed to assist entrepreneurs — through a combination of guidance, collaboration, funding, education and workspace opportunities.

SMARTstart program manager Dan Mitchell detailed many of those offerings, at last month’s Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting Seven Springs Golf Club in New Port Richey.

Mitchell told those gathered:“If you’re an entrepreneur somewhere in the startup phase, or first couple years, we probably have a program that can help benefit you at some point during that journey. You just have to ask.”

Pasco EDC is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes countywide economic development, and is partnered and funded

by corporate and public investors focused on the economic vitality of Pasco County.

Through SMARTstart, it operates two business incubators. One is in Dade City and the other in New Port Richey.

Each offers its own set of unique features, along with affordable desk spaces and professional meeting spaces with Wi-Fi connections.

One of the newer features at the Dade City site, for instance, is an incubator commercial kitchen. It aims to help those looking to launch a food business beyond farmer’s markets and vendor fairs.

Operating at 15029 14th St., the facility features a six-burner range, a single-door refrigerator, a single-door freezer, an under-the-counter ice machine, shelving, and stainless steel work tables. Mitchell said it helps food entrepreneurs facilitate wholesale distribution “to grow to that next level.”

Pasco EDC’s location in West Pasco offers its own digital media studio for podcasting, recording commercials and so on. It comes furnished with a high-quality sound board, four boom mics, green screens and white screens, which can all be used.

In Mitchell’s words, it’s “super neat.”

SMARTstart also offers educational classes, workshops and coaching to aspiring entrepreneurs.The learning sessions cover such topics as cybersecurity, crowdfunding, YouTube and social media marketing.There also are monthly entrepreneur roundtables, often facilitated by retired corporate executives who share their expertise.

Mitchell underscored the value of sessions where fellow entrepreneurs brainstorm, receive mentorship, and discover they’re not alone in their problems or roadblocks of starting a business.

“We know that being an entrepreneur is hard,” he said.

SMARTstart also opens the door for more business-to-business connection for startup entrepreneurs.

The Pasco EDC’s ongoing partnerships with local chambers of commerce, colleges and universities, CareerSource and others, Mitchell said, so it can help business owners make a variety of connections.

In other words, the Pasco EDC’s deep ties throughout the community gives entrepreneurs a chance to network with people they otherwise would never meet.

“We can’t force business to happen, but we can set the table,” Mitchell said.

SMARTstart even has a microloan business financing program, designed for those that can’t secure a loan from a typical bank.

Loans are available for up to $50,000, coming from a revolving fund that must be paid back eventually.To qualify, an entrepreneur or small business owner must demonstrate the experiences and resources to be successful, Mitchell said.

The program has loaned out a total of $1.5 million to 57 businesses since being established about five years ago, Mitchell said.

The microloan program helps fill a needed niche in business financing, Mitchell said.

“If you’re a startup and the bank says, ‘Sorry, we’re not going to give you money, you’re brand new,’ come to us. We’ll talk to you, we’ll walk you through the process.You still have to have what it takes, but maybe it’s not what the bank is looking for, and just call me and we’ll talk about that,” Mitchell said.

Pasco EDC and SMARTstart also have other initiatives in the works.

They recently sponsored a free mobile application called Startup Space, for Pasco County-based entrepreneurs. It’s similar to a Facebook group, Mitchell said, but just for local entrepreneurs, where they can communicate with one another in real-time, seek advice, post business events and more.

He said of the app, “You can get a little more granular with your questions, and help each other out, ‘Hey, does anyone have a good CPA?’” The Pasco EDC also is organizing a new event called,“Grow Pasco,” that will bring together about 200 entrepreneurs on May 9 at the Hyatt Place Tampa/Wesley Chapel.

The event’s keynote speaker will be Kevin Harrington, who’s credited with creating the television infomercial and was an original panelist on ABC’s “Shark Tank” hit television series.

The event also will have other guest speakers, panels, workshops and breakout sessions.

Olympic softball legend inspires at Pasco Chamber

To kick off its 27th annual Business Development Week luncheon,The Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce brought in a keynote speaker to serve up a different kind of pitch — literally.

It was two-time Olympic softball gold medalist and ESPN lead softball analyst Michele Smith, a Treasure Island resident who has family ties to Pasco County.

Speaking at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey, the softball legend preached a message of perseverance and handling adversity — tying in athletics, broadcasting and the business world.

Smith is familiar with overcoming setbacks. She suffered a career-threatening injury as a teen, but went on to become one of the most accomplished and recognizable figures in women’s softball.

Smith’s first major hurdle came in July 21, 1986, at 19 years old.

Her father was driving her home from an oral surgeon appointment when a sleeping Smith was thrown from the truck when her car door opened on a turn. She was thrown into a roadside post, chopping off part of her elbow bone and tearing her tricep on her left arm, which severed the muscle and nerve endings in her pitching arm.

At the time, she was coming off a superb freshman year at Oklahoma State and was told by doctors she likely would never pitch.

Smith didn’t accept that diagnosis. She was dead-set on making a comeback.

She put it like this:“I think at 19 I didn’t really realize it and I was a little stubborn. I thought, if I’m never going to pitch again, I’m going to make that decision. I’m certainly going to try to come back from this horrific accident, and so I did.”

Indeed, she made a miraculous recovery.

She was back in the circle in time for her sophomore season, after nine long months of rehab, training and physical therapy. She even returned with greater velocity —

“I worked very, very hard to get back,” Smith said.“And, I just kept thinking about this one word —perseverance.”

After the car accident, she had a recordsetting career at Oklahoma State. She played professional softball in Japan for 16 years.

She was starting pitcher for the gold-medalist U.S. Olympic softball team at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney,Australia; and, she was inducted into the National Softball Hall of Fame.

She put those achievements into perspective.

“When people look at me and think, ‘Wow, as an Olympic athlete, you just must be special and this or that.’ No, I worked really hard, and I overcame a lot, and I loved adversity because it brought out the best in me. It really taught me what I’m able to do and what I’m able to accomplish,” she said.

It turns out her first-ever Olympic softball game was 10 years to the day of the car accident.

Smith has leveraged her noteworthy playing career into a very successful and trailblazing broadcasting career, beginning in 1998 at ESPN. Over the years she has also called games for NBC, CBS Sports Network and TBS, where in 2012 she became the first female broadcaster in history to serve as a commentator for a nationally televised Major League Baseball game.

While the gig is “a lot of fun,” there can be some nerve-wracking moments in live television, Smith said.

“Anything that can go wrong in live television does go wrong,” Smith said, with a chuckle.“A lot of times at home you have no idea that the wheels are falling off the bus.

“I’ve had a lot of very interesting moments as an ESPN analyst, but I do love it,” Smith said.

Learning and memorizing facts and statistics about many teams and new players every year is a challenging aspect of the job.

“It’s a lot of homework, and a lot of studying,” she said.

She also mentioned the increasing popularity of televised women’s softball over the years.

The network has begun broadcasting more college softball in February, in place of some college basketball games, she said.

She also noted that some Women’s College Softball World Series games have been moved to ESPN from alternative ESPN2 because the ratings were exceeding Yankees-Red Sox network game broadcasts.

“Those are big, big monumental moves for our sport, for women’s sports, for girls and women,” she said.

Aside from broadcasting, Smith also has dabbled in commercial real estate. She has purchased and rehabbed old buildings in and around the Treasure Island community.

Smith and her project team have transformed the oldest motel in Treasure Island into a vacation rental property called Sunset Inn & Cottages, rated as the community’s No. 1 hotel by Trip Advisor.

Other projects include turning a former laundromat into an upscale event space in Madeira Beach, and renovating a former St. Petersburg gas station into a craft brewery and BBQ restaurant.

Smith said she takes pride in “taking an old building and making it something where people will come and enjoy themselves, and be able to share very special moments in their lives.”

She encouraged those gathered to take a leap of faith and step outside of their comfort zones, like she did when she took on commercial real estate.

She cited one of her favorite quotes — from LinkedIn co-founder, Reid Hoffman — regarding entrepreneurs and new business owners. He said: “You jump off a cliff and you assemble an airplane on the way down.”

Smith added:“A lot of times you have to disrupt the status quo if you want growth.”

Of course, learning the real estate game has had its share of growing pains and can be humbling, too, she said.

“There will be times I’m calling a game on ESPN and then the next morning I’ll be running around plumbing a toilet or something,” she said, laughing.

Pasco drops fines on overdue library books

Pasco County Libraries has joined a national trend and no longer imposes fines on overdue library materials.

The new policy kicked in on Feb. 10.

The timing also coincides with Library Lovers Month, according to a Pasco County news release.

Materials borrowed from the county’s library system will continue to have a due date, but the fines associated for bringing them back late will no longer apply.

Dropping the fines actually saves the library system a substantial amount of money, the system reports.

In Fiscal Year 2019, libraries collected $67,288 in overdue fines, but the administrative cost to manage and collect the fees was $386,345, according to system figures.

Besides saving $319,057, the shift in policy allows library staff to spend more time assisting customers, conducting outreach and offering enrichment programs, the news release adds.

Removing the fees also removes a barrier for some patrons.

“Fines for overdue materials can act as an inequitable barrier to service, disproportionately affecting minors, students, and community members with limited financial resources,” said Libraries Program Manager Robert Harrison. “Libraries have seen increases in return rates, borrowing and library card registrations after adopting finefree policies.”

The new program kicks off with a “book amnesty” period from Feb. 10 through March 10, when all accumulated fines (large or small) associated with overdue materials will be forgiven once the item is returned.

In addition to loaning books and other materials, Pasco County provides a wide variety of programming.

and shorter recovery time after surgery, reduced nausea that allows patients to more quickly resume normal eating and drinking, and no constipation common with opioid drugs.

“Most importantly, patients spend less time in the hospital, and resume their regular activities much sooner,” said Dr. Weerasinghe.

For the past 20 years, there was a big push to eliminate patient pain, explains Dr. Weerasinghe, which led to the over-prescribing of opioid medication.

“Being free of pain is not necessarily a good thing, especially if it delays a person’s recovery and exposes him to potential addiction,” said Dr. Weerasinghe. “Cultural, political and pharmaceutical factors pushed for a standard of no pain, which is not always the best goal for a patient because of the risk opioids bring.”

Dr. Weerasinghe shared that research on patient discharge after surgery shows that 7% of patients are still using opioids six months after surgery, and of those, 14% are still on opioids five years later. The best way to prevent addiction from occurring is to not prescribe opioids at the time of surgery.

“The opioid crisis contributed to exploration of alternative pain relief, which led to the multimodal approach to pain relief that we’re using with opioid-free anesthesiology,” said Dr. Weerasinghe.

“This is not an abandonment of pain relief — but a new solution to stop the pain at the source,” adds Dr. Hisghman. “After almost 20 years of prac-

tice, I did not want to be left out on this new approach to treating pain at its source, with better outcome for my patients.”

Drs. Weerasinghe and Hisghman have found that opioid-free anesthesia often provides superior post-operative pain control and lessens side effects often found with opioid pain medication.

“Opioid-free anesthesia makes surgery more pleasant, increases safety and enhances recovery, all while providing superior pain control,” said Dr. Weerasinghe. “Our patients want this – it makes surgery less complicated and gives us better outcomes.”

Medical Center of Trinity is the only hospital in Tampa Bay currently using opioid-free anesthesiology. Its patients have ranged in age from their 30s to 80s, and all have left the hospital with minimal to almost no pain.

“I even recommended a similar opioid-sparing anesthesia model for my mother-in-law, who had great success,” said Dr. Hisghman. “She is a believer in this protocol, and so am I. This is a visionary approach for our hospital, and truly sets us apart from other medical facilities. We are very proud to be offering it to residents of our community.”

There’s a new way of doing surgery at Medical Center of Trinity that greatly reduces patient pain and recovery time, and eliminates the use of opioid medication and its addictive properties.

Dr. Dilendra Weerasinghe, a board-certified general and bariatric surgeon, recently joined the hospital’s medical staff and brought with him expertise in opioid-free anesthesia. He has worked closely with Dr. Jonathan Hisghman, who heads up the hospital’s anesthesiology department, to set up an opioid-free anesthesiology program.

The two physicians have implemented a protocol for surgery and post-operative care that was initially developed in the United Kingdom, where Dr. Weerasinghe received his medical training.

“Instead of using opioids and traditional anesthesiology, this protocol uses multiple drugs and nerve blocks that stop the pain at the source, before neurons transmit pain from its source to the brain,” explains Dr. Weerasinghe. “For example, before you make an incision or a cut, you block the pain before it reaches the brain or the central nervous system.”

Dr. Weerasinghe came to Medical Center of Trinity last fall to launch an opioid-free weight loss and general surgery program. His team has already successfully used this protocol on more than 20 surgeries, including bariatric cases.

Opioid-free anesthesiology has many benefits, but one of its most important is not exposing the patient, his family and caregivers to opioids’ addictive risks.

“We have an opioid crisis today, and the source for many of these drugs are prescriptions written to relieve pain after surgery,” explains Dr. Hisghman. “Unfortunately, these prescriptions can sometimes be abused by the patient, or by people who have access to a patient’s drugs.”

“Treating pain with opioids has the unintended consequence of opioid addiction, and continuing to prescribe opioids today contributes to the addiction and overdose crisis impacting our communities,” adds Dr. Weerasinghe.

Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller Nikki Alvarez-Sowles announced the introduction of a program that allows individuals who register to receive alerts of upcoming criminal court events through text and/or email.

The system, called e-Notify, is intended to keep defendants and other interested parties informed about upcoming court events. A pilot project launched last October provided alerts in cases filed in Orange, Okaloosa and Nassau counties.The program expanded statewide as of Jan. 31, according to a news release.

The program was developed collaboratively by the state’s clerks of court and the state courts system.

The system was designed specifically to fulfill the Legislature’s direction to provide

alerts to defendants in criminal cases, but it also offers a valuable resource to others wishing to be notified of case events.

The system should curb costly court ‘noshows.’

Studies in jurisdictions where electronic alerts have been implemented have shown significant reductions in ‘failures to appear,’ or instances in which defendants miss their court events.

Users who sign up for the service choose how they will get alerts – email and/or text – as well as the timing of their reminders, choosing any combination of 14day, seven-day or day-ahead notifications.

There is no limit to the number of cases users can sign up for to get alerts.

E-Notify users also are able to manage their subscriptions, and make changes to cases and frequency.

February is known for Valentine’s Day and American Heart Month, but it’s Black History month, too.

It’s a time when events and special lessons help convey the important contributions made by black men and women in the arenas of literature, civil rights, music, inventions, science, sports, entertainment and other fields of endeavor.

And, in that context, it’s a great time to learn about how history has had an influence on the flavors of food.

Obviously, there are regional and historical influences on the flavors of food, such as Caribbean, East African and soul food.

Some may wonder what distinguishes soul food from southern food.

Soul food is a type of southern food.

The two types of food are similar, but it helps to know the history — and the sad reality of the origins of soul food.

While not called soul food initially, this type of cuisine came from the states known as the Deep South — Georgia,Alabama and Mississippi.

Originally, it began as the basic foods that the enslaved African-Americans were able to eat.Those typically included leftovers or less desirable cuts of meat; starch, such as cornmeal, rice, or sweet potatoes; and, leafy greens.

To make the meat more palatable, black cooks would fry the food in fat or add fat when boiling it, and then would add seasonings and flavors, such as red hot peppers and vinegar.Those flavors are now a popular combination for hot sauce, a common condiment in the South.

Black families would garden to increase their food supply, as a means of survival.

These families were resourceful, growing food that came with them during the slave trade, such as okra and black-eyed peas.

While many think of soul food including meat, such as pork — initially the cuisine was mainly a plant-based diet.

During the Emancipation and Reconstruction periods, the freed slaves and their descendants still ate mainly a plantbased diet, with meat used to add flavor, or for special occasions.

Over time, as the African-American community began to prosper, meat became a more regular staple, according to soul food cookbook author Adrian Miller.

Soul food and southern food are influenced by each, with soul food originating first.

While very similar, the primary difference is flavor.

Soul food typically is spicier, sweeter or saltier.

Soul Food Collard Greens Ingredients • 4 pounds collard greens, cleaned and cut • 1 pound bacon ends, chopped • 1 large onion, diced • 6 cups chicken broth • 2 cups water • 1 teaspoon seasoning salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1 teaspoon minced garlic • 1 large jalapeno pepper, sliced • 2 tablespoons to 3 tablespoons of white distilled vinegar Directions Place the bacon ends in a pot, and place the pot over medium heat.

Brown the bacon, then add in the diced onions and cook until the onions start to sweat (similar to sautĂŠ but not meant to brown, only meant to release moisture on low heat for 5 minutes to 10 minutes, or until onions have softened and turned translucent).

Pour in the 2 cups of water, and turn the heat down to medium.

Add in the sliced jalapeno and the vinegar, and stir the ingredients.

Cover the pot, and let simmer for 1 hour and 10 minutes over medium heat. Be sure to peek in and stir periodically.

When Bruce and Tasha Henry chose the name OhmStar Home Lending for their new business, they wanted something with a soothing sound that would generate positive energy.

“The meaning of ohm is the ultimate,” said Tasha Henry, who holds a doctorate in occupational therapy.

“It’s been proven that saying the word ‘ohm’ brings a calming effect and healing vibration to the soul — it clears the atmosphere and brings light to situations.

“And, we wanted to bring light to our buyers. It can be a dark place if you’ve never bought a home before because you don’t know what to expect. You need light, guidance and someone to help decrease the stress.

We wanted to send a good and positive vibration out to the universe.”

OhmStar opened in 2004, and with savvy leadership, survived the 2008 recession to become a mortgage lender with both state and national licensing.

“OhmStar Home Lending is a direct lender,” said Tasha. “We’re not going to shop customer loans to 50 different lending companies. We’re pretty much a one-stop shop, and customer credit will only be pulled once.”

“We are able to close and fund very complex loans in less than 30 days,” said Tasha. “We’ve even had VA loans that we’ve closed and funded in two weeks, which is almost

unheard of, and are very proud that our turnaround time. Our goal is to get the loan in, closed and funded in less than 30 days.”

As a mortgage lender, OhmStar offers Federal Housing Administration, Veterans Affairs, conventional and 12-month bank statement loans.

They also offer first-time homebuyer programs, and can do refinances, purchases and loans for investment properties, second homes, primary residences, duplexes, apartment buildings and commercial loans.

“We cater to veterans,” said Bruce Henry, who holds a doctorate in business administration. “We can do 100% financing for veterans with FHA and VA loans, and also offer a credit enhancement program to help veterans and other clients whose credit is not the best.”

The OhmStar credit enhancement teaches financial literacy to their customers. “We offer classes designed for first-time homebuyers—just to educate people on financial literacy,” said Tasha.

While the Henrys have built a large and successful lending business, they continue to give personalized service that small businesses specialize in.

“I was born in the early 1960s, and remember going to the neighborhood food and meat markets,” said Bruce.

“Those hometown services were important to me growing up because they looked after the little person.

We believe in that same level of service and sense of community, and strive to offer that to our customers every day.”

The deadline for online applications is Feb. 14 for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Interested parents should go to UnionParkAcademy.org, and select the enrollment tab.

Union Park Charter Academy opened in 2018 for grades K-6, and last year added a seventh grade. The 2020-2021 school year will see the addition of an eighth grade, completing the school’s elementary enrollment of 765 students.

STUDENTS CELEBRATE IMMIGRANTS

Second-grade students at McKitrick Elementary School in Lutz are learning

about citizenship and immigration, and Ellis Island.

In culmination of the studies, each student will take on the persona of an immigrant arriving at Ellis Island in 1900.

Students will relive every aspect of the Ellis Island experience, including packing their belongings, organizing documents and traveling, during this engaged learning program.

More than 200 students and 75 volunteers in period dress will take part in a simulation at the school building, which will be transformed to look like Ellis Island, on Feb. 27.

9/11 SURVIVOR TO SPEAK

Saint Leo University’s College of Arts and Sciences will host guest lecturer Michael Hingson on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., at 33701 State Road 52, Kirk Hall, Rooms 123 and 124, in St. Leo. Hingson, a 9/11 survivor and accessibility advocate, will talk on “Speaking with Vision.”

Blind since birth, Hingson changed careers after surviving the destruction of World Trade Center Tower One, with the help of his guide dog.

His book,“Thunder Dog:The True Story of a Blind Man, His Guide Dog, and the Triumph of Trust at Ground Zero” will be available for purchase and signing, after his talk, at 8:30 p.m.

Hingson also will speak to students during selected class sessions, lead workshops on campus, and meet with groups of faculty and staff, as Saint Leo’s Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow of 2020.

GRADUATION RATES

The Pasco County Schools graduation rate improved by 1.6 percentage points in 2019, rising to 88.3%, according to a news release.

Pasco’s graduation rate was well above the state rate of 86.9%, and it marks an increase of nearly 10 percentage points since 2015.

A goal of 85% graduation rate by 20192020 was set, and that goal has been exceeded, two years early.

Several schools experienced dramatic improvement, and the first graduating class from Cypress Creek Middle High School posted a 96% graduation rate.

SUBDIVISION, from page 1A ing in rental homes are less committed to upkeep because they aren’t as invested as individual homeowners. They also noted that renters tend to be more transient than homeowners.

County Attorney Jeffrey Steinsnyder said that the county doesn’t consider the question of whether a property will be rented, or owned, when deciding land use issues.

The Pasco County Planning Commission recommended denial of the request, citing incompatibility between the requested lot size and the area’s existing development pattern.

But, county planners recommended approval, noting the county’s long-range plan allows up to six dwellings per acre, and saying this development represents an appropriate transition.

Pressman pointed out that the request is for 2.85 dwellings per acre, less than half of what’s allowed in the county’s land use plan. He also cited the property’s planned 200-foot buffer.

But, neighbors said the site plan indicates that the homes will be clustered together, which effectively reduces the lot size.

They said the planned lot sizes simply are not a good fit for the area.

Conditions for approval include a requirement to improve Alpine Road, to the entrance of the subdivision. The development also must install a left-turn lane on Bell Lake Road, and provide sidewalks on the frontage of the subdivision.

Eric Swanson, land manager for American Homes 4 Rent, a national homebuilder, said the average household income for its renters is $100,000.

He also described the typical renter as an older millennial with a family, and said renters typically stay at a property for two years to three years.

Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn Starkey said this type of housing — rental homes — is a trend across the country, according to Urban Land Institute reports.

Neighbors expressed a variety of concerns.

Troy Gotschall, lives on Ladera Lane, just north of the planned subdivision.

“My biggest concern with this whole project is that the size of the lots do not meet what is in the surrounding area.That’s just not acceptable to us. It doesn’t make sense.

“It really gives us a heartache,” he said.

David Hodierne, who also lives on Ladera Lane, told commissioners:“Obviously, rentals concern us.”

He added:“One of the main questions I ask is: What need is truly being filled here?

We have a high-density subdivision going into our rural community.

He cited the county’s declining percentage of owner-occupied homes and pointed to a recent action by commissioners to create a rental registry ordinance. When adopting that ordinance, commissioners cited concerns about the potential problems that result when rental properties are neglected, or attract criminal activity.

Margaret Gotschall, who lives on Fallglo Lane, said “the condition of the roads (Bell Lake and Alpine) is certainly a concern, especially with construction and increased traffic,” she said.“Bell Lake Road has deep, call them, ditches, on the side of the road.

“Alpine Road is very narrow. It’s deteriorating. The shoulders on both sides are caving in. It would need tremendous work to accommodate the additional traffic, and of course, the construction equipment that’s going to be going over these roads while this development is being constructed,” she said.

Karen Joeb, of Alpine Road, said “my grandson gets off the school bus. He steps in a ditch, to get across the road, to get across Alpine to come home.”

Curt Lessl, who lives on Alpine Road, said he’s already lost 160 maple trees in his backyard due to flooding.

“Putting this many homes, 10 feet apart from each other, on that small of property will overload that wetlands, which feeds into the wetlands and the drainage system that feeds into Banjo Lake right behind my property. It’s going to make an impact.

He also asked: “What guarantee do we have that this company, who is going to come in put in these rental properties, is going to maintain those rental properties.

“What’s going to happen when they decide to sell it to some other company that doesn’t have the same interest at heart? And then they sell it, and we’re left holding the bag.”

He urged commissioners:“Leave this area the quiet, small, low-density residential area that it has been for the last 50 years.”

Despite neighbors’ objections, commissioners sided with their planning staff’s recommendation and approved the rezoning, 5-0.

Various bus stations would be built adjacent to the highway and within a 1-mile radius of communities with larger concentrations of commercial development.

Chris Jadick, of the Tampa Bay Area Regional Transit Authority (TBARTA), outlined aspects of the proposed bus rapid transit system during a North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting on Feb. 4.

The proposed project carries a price tag of $455 million, and is now in the project development and environment phase, Jadick told those gathered at Pasco-Hernando State College’s Porter Campus.

Alternatives are now being evaluated to determine which would be most beneficial to the public, Jadick said.

The current plan being studied calls for designated lanes to be constructed along Interstates 75 and 275 shoulders, catered for buses only.

Increasing the number of stations could result in lower bus fares for commuters, Jadick said. But, it also affects how quickly riders can get from Point A to Point B. “This all comes down to speed,” Jadick said. “The more stations you have, where they are, determines how quickly you can get somewhere,” he explained.

The study is scheduled to wrap up by August 2021, he noted.

When 30% of the design plan is set, federal funds will be allocated toward the project, Jadick said, aside from state and local assistance.

The project aims to help address Florida’s low-performance ranking in the area of public transportation, Jadick said.

“There’s no question we have great local transit providers.The problem is regionally.

How do we connect Pasco County with the great opportunities in Hillsborough (County), or Hillsborough (County) to Manatee (County)?” he asked.

The nation’s economy didn’t grow as much last year compared to prior years, but McGee noted:“we’re seeing signs that that’s starting to turn around and growth will move a little higher as the year progresses.”

In short:“We think we’re going to continue to be in this goldilocks environment where growth is good.We’ve got the lowest unemployment that we’ve had since at least the late 1960s and its staying much lower without showing signs of creating inflation as it would’ve in the past.”

There have been “hiccups” to the U.S. economy in the early part of 2020, he noted.

The coronavirus outbreak has negatively impacted stock markets, he said. Pandemics today are more disruptive to economic activity because of the globalization of the economy and an increased frequency of global travel.

“Nobody knows how bad it’s going to get,” he said, referring to the coronavirus outbreak.“What we know about pandemics is eventually they pass…but, that’s what we’ve got to contend with for a while.”

Aerospace company Boeing’s decision to suspend production on its 737 Max model airplane — due to potential safety issues, is “another thing hurting the economy,” he said.

Boeing is America’s largest exporter, and, the economic expert said that alone will “knock about a half point off of growth.”

But, this too, is viewed as a temporary issue.

And, McGee is bullish about the long-term sustainability of the U.S. economy.

America is in the midst of its longest economic expansion in its history — now going on more than 10 years, he said. During that time, the country’s inflation rate has remained “very stable” — anchoring at about 2%.

He calls the current financial climate “the most stable, least volatile economic environment in American history.”

He pointed to a number of reasons for the current state of the economy.

For one thing, the country has made a transition to a service-oriented economy — away from a “much more cyclical and volatile” manufacturing and goods producing economy, he said.

There’s also a growing retirement population.That population is living longer and has accumulated wealth, so that creates a demand that’s steady over time and not subject to fluctuations in the economy for services including health care, travel and so on.

He also touched on the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s economic policies.

He credited the president’s corporate tax cuts for making U.S. companies competitive again, giving them a reason to continue operating in America rather than uprooting to other countries that traditionally have had lower taxes and labor costs.

He also cited Trump’s regulatory rollbacks, which he said have boosted small

Before Trump was elected, previously imposed regulations — many pertaining to environmental and health care, and such — had become “the most consistent complaint of small businesses,” the financial expert said.

He then pointed to a survey from the National Federation of Independent Business that suggests small business confidence has increased in each of the last three years. It’s now reached its “highest confidence levels” in the survey’s 46-year history, he said.

McGee went on to explain the Trump administration’s economic policies have begun to benefit traditional lower wage, blue collar workers, too.

He elaborated: “Wages for people with less than a college degree are starting to rise faster than wages at the top, and this is a direct result of shifting from the globalization policy to the localization policies that are more focused on helping workers and businesses in the United States.”

McGee cited the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index, which has indicated that America’s lower income and lower education population have expressed more confidence in their future earnings potential in the last three years.

He also referenced a January Gallup poll, which shows Trump’s job approval rating has risen to 49%, his highest in Gallup polling since he took office in 2017.

The speaker put it all into perspective: “The economy is reshaping itself — It’s helping lower income people, and that’s why surveys are starting to show people are much more happy with the way things now are than they were before.”

McGee added:“Trump’s blown up the political establishment. That’s why he’s so hated, because basically he’s reformed the Republican Party to represent workers which traditionally were democratic voters.

(President Ronald) Reagan did something similar. If you look at Trump’s policies, they’re almost exactly the same as (what) Reagan did.”

The tri-county bus rapid transit system is just part of TBARTA’s 10-year vision plan.

Another project in that long-range plan calls for expanded car and vanpool services.

The regional transit agency has been working in conjunction with the Enterprise rental service to provide feasible transportation options for government workers.

Plans are in the works to create a ridesharing program to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road — which would decrease congestion, shorten commute times and result in cleaner air.

It is not yet clear when either of these new initiatives could begin offering commuters new alternatives.

Sunlake distance runners leave lasting mark Their excellence led to college scholarships

or this group of distance runners, the thousands of miles of foot to pavement have finally paid off — in the form of college athletic scholarships.

The past few years, Sunlake High School’s boys and girls cross-country and long distance track programs have established themselves as among the best in the area, and the state.

This year’s National Signing Day festivities underscored that fact: Five senior runners made their college commitments official on Feb. 5 — Luke Scheid (Flagler College), Gavin Kennedy (Saint Leo University), Drew Knobl (Southeastern University), Albert La Red (Saint Leo University), and Liina Winborn (University of Florida). A sixth distance runner, Emily Jenkins (Pasco-Hernando State College) participated in an early signing day ceremony in December.

Sunlake also celebrated two boys lacrosse signings — Jason Schwarz (Barton College) and Roberto Valentin (Webber International University).

But, it was a particularly special day for the Seahawks’ runners, who leave a lasting legacy as they take the next step to the college ranks.

The Seahawks cross-country program in 2019 experienced arguably its best season ever, as the boys squad finished fifth and the girls team sixth at the Class 3A FHSAA state championships. Both teams also claimed conference titles and had strong showings at districts.The girls took first place, and the boys finished runner-up. Both squads also garnered top-five finishes at regionals — boys, third; and girls, fourth.

Many of those same distance runners also helped steer the school’s 2019 track team to sweep conference and district crowns.The boys team went on to win regionals, while the girls finished runner-up that season, then advanced to states.

Saint Leo University signee Albert La Red believes the distance team’s recent string of success and the large 2020 signing class now will help underclassman gain exposure from colleges and universities “that weren’t looking at us before.”

“It’s exciting,” La Red said,“because now we get these young guys over there, they have such a bright future for them.”

Sunlake’s distance runners logged an estimated average of 1,600 miles per year, with some runners racking up as many as

7,000 miles during their four-year prep running careers.

Besides developing their athletic skills, the grueling practices and stressful meets also forged lasting bonds and memories for La Red and other distance runners.

“I grew up with everybody at this school, and so it was super fun just running with my friends all time,” La Red said.“We always hang out outside of school and stuff, always inviting each other over, always doing things.”

Fellow teammate and Flagler College signee Luke Scheid also appreciates the “lifelong friends” established through the cross-country and track programs — ones that helped push him through daily workouts.

Scheid said the thing he’ll likely miss the most from his time at Sunlake is the way he felt during hard practices — when running with his teammates was motivating, and made those difficult practices feel easier.

Liina Winborn’s pledge to the University of Florida marks the cross-country team’s first NCAA Division I signing in program history.

In her time at Sunlake, the decorated distance runner set several school records, claimed multiple conference and district individual titles, and earned fourth-place and sixth-place individual finishes the past two years at the 3A state cross-country championships.

With that, the two-time Sunshine Athletic Conference (SAC) East girls’ cross-country runner of the year and defending girls track runner of the year had trouble settling on her favorite memory as a Seahawk.

“It’s hard to pick one,”Winborn said, noting there were so many fun and funny moments.

Born into a military family, Winborn transferred into Sunlake as a sophomore from an international school in Belgium.

The school’s cross-country and track programs made the cultural transition easier — by offering Winborn an immediate peer group.

“The hardest thing was getting used to it and making new friends,” she said,“but having the team automatically gave me those amazing friendships that I know are going to last forever.”

The highly coveted athlete said she’s relieved to be done with the recruiting process, which ended when she signed the dotted line to become a Florida Gator.

“It feels amazing to finally not stress about it for one, but to have my future set and to be going to such an amazing school,” she said.

She also said:“I wouldn’t be going there without my team and my coach, and just everybody at Sunlake supporting me.”

Winborn received looks from other NCAA Division I programs, but it was Florida that ultimately stood out, offering her what she thinks are the best tools to be successful. She explained,“They personally told me they could take me as far as I wanted to go, athletic and academic-wise…and them saying that they could make that possible for me is bottom-line what I wanted to do.”

Sunlake athletic director Reesa Pledge at the ceremony said the group of distance runners “put Sunlake on the map,” adding, “their hard work and dedication has been unmatched by previous by runners that have been here at the school.”

“They were doing probably the hardest workouts in the track program,” he said,“because they were definitely putting in the most miles.”

Emphasizing that point, Hodros mentioned when he tries to pitch athletes around the school to join the track team, they question whether they’ll have to put in the same amount of time and effort as long distance runners.

Explained Hodros:“It’s very, very difficult to get people to run track first off, and then they’re like, ‘Oh, you’re not going to be make me run like those distance kids,’ and that’s what these kids did every single day, these four years they’ve been at Sunlake.”

Hodros also read prepared remarks from Sunlake distance coach Randal Reeves, who was unable to make the signing day event.

In a later telephone interview with The Laker/Lutz News, Reeves commended the scholarship recipients for their efforts, and for buying into the distance program.

Said Reeves,“These kids have been leaders amongst the rest of the group in getting everybody together to run as group, really year-round.”

Even more college signings could be on the way for other Sunlake senior distance runners before the year’s end, Reeves said.

Eleven of his 12 seniors intend to run at the next level, either through scholarship or as walk-ons.

“The success of the program has really led to a lot of attention to our runners,” he said.“My job is to get them recruited, to put them in the spotlight so they can earn the college scholarship opportunities, where all that hard work pays off.”

YOUTH RECREATION CAMP

The Saint Leo University recreation department is hosting Little Lions Day Camp for all children in the community ages 5 to 13, from July 6 to July 10.

Each camp day runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early bird registration for $125 per child is open now through April 30.

Saint Leo University junior right-handed pitcher McCabe Sargent, a Land O’ Lakes High School product, has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s preseason NCAA Division II All-South Region second team.

Sargent began 2019 in the bullpen, but emerged as the Friday night starter for the Lions midway through last season. He finished the year with a 3.77 ERA, a 4-5 record and 69 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched.The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder also had five starts in which he hurled seven or more innings, including a streak of four straight late in the year. Sargent is one of six starting pitchers divided between the first and second preseason teams, including one of three Sunshine State Conference starting pitchers.

When Alice saw Earl, ‘It was love at first sight’

A

lice and Earl Angel were only teenagers when they met, but Alice knew instantly that he was the one for her.

The couple — celebrating their 77th anniversary on Feb. 20 — recalled that first meeting.

“In our little town, we had what you call a square,” Earl said.

People would come to people watch there, or meet up with friends.

“I come around the corner one evening, and I see this car sitting there, and I knew the driver and the girl he was with, so I went over to talk with them,” Earl said.

Alice and her blind date were in the back seat.

Earl said he and the couple he knew “got to talkin’ and talkin’,’ and when he left, they went on their way.

The next day, Alice’s girlfriend asked if she had liked her blind date.

Earl said Alice told her friend: “I didn’t think much of it, but what about that fellow that came up to the car?”

Alice recalls the moment she saw first saw Earl:“It was love at first sight because I can still see him coming around the corner of the building, his overcoat flopping out, and I thought:‘He is the cutest thing I ever saw.’”

Alice’s friend offered to try to set up Earl with Alice, and Alice agreed.

When her friend asked Earl, he replied:“I don’t know. I don’t even know her.”

But, he agreed anyway.

“We went out — and that was it,” Earl said, noting about a year later, they married.

Five days later, Earl left for the U.S.Army.

“Back in 1942 and ’43, everybody got married young because of, you know, the war (World War II),”Alice said.

Earl went to Fort Meade, Maryland, and from there to Camp Mackall, North Carolina.

Alice lived with her parents while Earl was in the Army. She visited him twice at Camp Mackall, and she became pregnant.

“I had a daughter while he was in the service, and she was 18 months old when he came home,”Alice said.

The war years were a time of uncertainty.

“It was terrifying,” Alice said.“I had two brothers in, and Earl, and a brother-in-law. Of course, each one of them, we worried about.”

Earl, one of 11 children, said: “I had six brothers in (the war).”

He served from February of 1943 to November of 1945, and as a paratrooper in the Philippines, he took enemy fire — and was wounded in the head.

“I laid in a foxhole for three days and nights before they got me to a hospital,” Earl said.

But, once he was out of the hospital, he went back to the battlefront.

His service earned him a Purple Heart.

After Earl returned from the war, the couple continued building their family — which over the years has grown to include three daughters, six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

ADVENTURES IN TRAVEL

Earl, now 96, held a wide assortment of jobs.

At an early age, he worked at area farms for room and board.

Later, he worked at a spinning mill that made fiber for automobile carpets, at a shoe factory, at a paper mill and a service station.

He spent 28 years as a bricklayer.

Mostly, he worked on high-rises, Alice said.

“I was up 27 stories,” said Earl, who traveled an hour-and-a-half each way for jobs in Baltimore,Annapolis and Washington D.C. Alice worried about Earl working at such heights, and finally, she put an end to it.

“He came home and he said he was going to have to start a new project on Monday. I said, ‘Is it another high-rise?’ He said,‘Yes.’ I said,‘Well, then, you’re not going to do it.’

“I just had the feeling.

TIP NO. 1

Don’t go to bed mad.

When Earl and Alice have a spat, they don’t go to bed mad. “We just forget about it,” Earl said.

“Or,” Alice said, “you sit and talk it out, and have a solution for it.”

TIP NO. 2

Earl and Alice Angel take great pride in their three daughters, displaying their graduation photos in their living room. The couple’s daughters are Carol Pratt, who lives in Rhode Island; Barbara Heltebridle, who lives in Maryland; and, Patricia Staub, who lives in South Carolina.

“He never used a belt or anything. He just walked on girders, or whatever you call them, and I just had the feeling he was going to fall. Several men did, you know, on jobs.

“I told him, ‘You just go down and tell your boss you quit.’

“So, for once, he listened to me,” she said, with a laugh.

Alice was still working at the time, so Earl took over the household chores.

“When I came home from work at night, he had supper ready to put on the table,” she said.

Alice managed a hat shop for 11 years, taking that job after their youngest daughter went to school.

She also worked at a bank for 21 years, first as a teller, then later as a bookkeeper, in the computer room and as a keypuncher, before retiring from the bank, as a bookkeeper.

“When I left the bank, I left at 12 o’clock that day and we took off in our trailer for a 4 ½-month trip around the United States,”Alice said.

“We covered every state, except three: North Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri,” Earl said.

They went to Canada and Mexico, too.

Going on road trips was nothing new for this couple.

Earl said: “When our girls were small, I used to come home from work on Friday evenings, and I’d tell her (Alice), ‘Pack up, we’re leaving at 4 o’clock tomorrow morning.’

“We took the girls and went all through New York, went through the Land of Make Believe, Santy Claus land and everything for the kids.

“We’d figure up how much time we had to get back to go to work Monday morning, and we’d turn around and come back.

They stayed in guesthouses.They’d stop at the grocery store for sandwich meat,

Kiss each other often.

“Kiss each other good night,” Earl said, but in the morning, too.

And, during the day, too, Alice said: “We kiss each other often.”

TIP NO. 3

Don’t get jealous.

Earl said Alice doesn’t get mad when the other women at Colony Hills, the mobile home park where they live, come up to give him a kiss.

“The women love him. I don’t care,” Alice said, laughing.

TIP NO. 4

Put each other first.

“Always try to treat them (spouse) the way you would want to be treated,” Alice said.“He helps me with everything.”

bread and milk. They’d eat at truck stops, too, because they had good food, Earl said.

Alice said:“We ended up in Montreal one time.”

Earl added:“Niagara Falls.”

Alice continued:“We couldn’t speak their language and they couldn’t speak ours, but the woman at the hotel, she made us all hot chocolate, and she was so nice, and we conversed that way.

“We had wonderful trips,”Alice said.

Earl went on: “My mother used to say, ‘Earl, you better stop that running around and save some of your money. And I’d say, ‘Mom, let me tell you something. I’m not going to work all week and sit on the front porch in a rocking chair and watch everybody else go up and down the highway.’”

“He said, ‘If one of you dies, the other one is going to be devastated.”

“I said, “Well, we’re still going to always do things together.”

They noted they’re the oldest couple there, and they’re treated like royalty.

Their neighbors trim their shrubs, pull their weeds, give them rides and have even done plumbing and electrical work — for free.

Plus, when there’s a community event at the clubhouse, they get to go first in the buffet line.

As they approach their 77th year of married life, it seems that Earl and Alice know the joys that come from hard work, simple pleasures and resilient love.

Honey bees can thrive in natural or domesticated environments, though they prefer to live in gardens, woodlands, orchards, meadows and other areas where flowering plants are abundant. Even though the tasselflower is a weed, it's also a pollinator magnet. Butterflies, bees and wasps are drawn to this lowly member of the aster family.

Sammy, a chow retriever mix, is 11 years old and also known as ‘The Lion.’ He is Lindsay Roell’s best friend and follows her everywhere she goes. Sammy was not too keen on the idea of having a little brother, Arlee, who is a 10-month-old Australian shepherd. Arlee loves to ride in Roell’s daughter’s power wheels car and loves to swim. Sammy, on the other hand, just likes to cuddle. Sammy and Arlee live with the Roell family in Lutz.

COMMUNITY RALLIES FOR TORTOISES

Residents have voiced concerns about the 115 endangered gopher tortoises in the pathway of heavy land-clearing equipment, dump trucks and construction crews, as Pasco County begins the Ridge Road Extension project.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has assured citizens that each and every one of the tortoises located within the construction site will be protected from being buried alive in their burrows, and will not be left without a burrow in cold weather, according to a news release.

Residents are worried that permit enforcements to protect the gopher tortoises and other wildlife will be the last thing on the construction crews’ minds, as they begin to clear the wilderness area, as on-time bonuses are at stake.

The concerned residents attended a Gopher Tortoise Vigil on Feb. 9, at the corner of Ridge Road and Moon Lake Road in New Port Richey, to rally their displeasure and concern for the wildlife within the Serenova Tract of Starkey Wilderness Preserve and elsewhere.
