kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The walls are up, the ice has been poured, and droves of hockey players soon will visit Pasco County. A hard-hat tour of the 150,500-squarefoot Florida Hospital Center Ice Complex revealed significant progress of the $20 million project, at 3173 Cypress Ridge Road in Wesley Chapel. A crowd of more than one hundred Pasco county business leaders and representatives toured the facility recently to learn

about its features, and about available programs and sponsorship opportunities. The facility is set to open “sometime in late October,” with a soft opening expected earlier, officials said. Described as the largest ice sports facility in the southeastern United States, the building will house five ice rinks, a multipurpose sports floor, a 2,600-square-foot fitness facility and an indoor sprint tack. There also will be a full-service family restaurant on the second floor and five See ICE, page 19A

It’s easy to become jaded when hearing repeated media reports about our troubled youth — from drug addiction to repetitive crimes to disrespect of authority. Some days, one can’t help but wonder if there are any good kids left. There are, of course. This issue of The Laker/Lutz News is evidence that our communities are full of good kids. It reaffirms that most teenagers obey the law, work hard, and have dreams and aspirations to make our world a better place. Today, we publish the names of 3,000plus high school seniors in the Class of 2016 who are graduating from area high schools. These are the good kids who don’t make the news because they respect their parents and their teachers, and meet all of the requirements to graduate. There are many, many more of these good kids, than there are of those who go astray. The newspaper that’s delivered to your home lists the graduates from the two high schools closest to where you live. If you receive the Land O’ Lakes edition of The Laker, your schools are Sunlake and Land O’ Lakes. In Wesley Chapel, they are Wiregrass and Wesley Chapel. And in East Pasco, they are Zephyrhills and Pasco. If you live in Hillsborough County, you receive The Lutz News and your schools are Steinbrenner and Freedom. Private schools pull from various areas, so these graduates are published in all our zones. You don’t have to be a graduate, or relative of a graduate, to peruse through our pullout graduation section. We want you to look for names of kids you know from your neighborhood, church, recreational activities and friends.

Eve’s Garden finds a new paradise By Kathy Steele

Evie Lynn is moving to greener pastures. To be precise, she is staking out 55 acres of an old orange grove in Groveland that will be populated with bonsai, bamboo and beefalos. The beefalos are her husband’s idea after spotting a herd of them on his drive to Groveland. The cows are a cross between domestic cattle and bison. The couple are the proud owners of a baby beefalo, bringing their herd up to a count of one dozen. Evie Lynn glowed with pride last week at the news of the calf’s first steps at the Lynns’ new pasture. But, she was also deep into the details of shutting down Eve’s Garden Inc., after 33 years in Land O’ Lakes — and relocating her enterprise to Groveland. The retail shop and garden, at 5602 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., are favorites of local gardeners who are looking for bonsai and bamboo plants, and who benefit from the expertise of Lynn and her staff.

Families looking for ways to help occupy their children during the summer may want to check out the events offered through Hillsborough County’s public libraries in north Hillsborough County. Some events scheduled in coming weeks include puppet shows, art programs and robotics. One coming attraction, offered through the Lutz Branch Library, is “Wild Florida, Alive,” a show that will be presented by the Creative Arts Theatre of the City of Tampa Parks and Recreation Department. The presentation explores the wild side of Florida and helps spectators discover the animals that make the state unique. It’s an environmental adventure, highlighting Florida’s endangered species through live theater, shadow puppetry, and music. See LIBRARIES, page 19A

‘Adopt a Hero’ aims to improve veterans’ lives By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Some staff members at the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home have come up with an idea they think will enrich the lives of the residents. They’ve launched an initiative they’re calling “Adopt A Hero.” The concept is simple, but they need a corps of volunteers to pull it off, and they’re reaching out to the community to try to bring their vision to life. Rebecca Pinson, social work program manager, and Johanna Snee, activity director, hope that “Adopt A Hero” will give the veterans something to look forward to each week, while giving volunteers a chance to make a meaningful contribution. In essence, they’re asking for volunteers who are willing to spend one hour per week engaging with a veteran. “A lot of veterans don’t have visitors,” Pinson said. “Their friends have passed,” she said, and family members may not live in the area. Each volunteer would be paired with a specific veteran, Pinson said. “We would try to connect the volunteer with the resident that has similar interests, hobbies or skillsets,” Pinson said. For instance, Snee said,“we have a resident who just enjoys playing chess.” Unfortunately, Pinson said, he doesn’t have someone to play chess with. Volunteers could come at their convenience, Pinson said. Once the volunteer arrives, it will be up to the volunteer and the veteran to decide how they want to spend their time together, Snee said.

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOS

This statue of a soldier in the foreground and the emblems of the various armed services in the background are symbolic of the sacrifices made by the men and women at the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home in service to the nation.

“They can read to them, if they’d like,” she said. Or,“they could help them to write letters,” Snee added. Or, they could help the veterans figure out how to use new technology, Pinson said.

Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home, at 6919 Parkway Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes, is a 120-bed nursing home for veterans.

Johanna Snee, left, and Rebecca Pinson, staff members at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home have come up with an idea they’re calling ‘Adopt a Hero.’ It’s a simple concept, but could yield powerful results.

“Someone who likes to sing and play instruments -- they could come and do that,” the social work program manager said. “They would do whatever they like. If they wanted to play a game with the resident, if they wanted to just chat, maybe have lunch with them,” Snee said. In fact, lunch would be a pretty good deal for the volunteer, the women said. “For $3.50 they can have lunch with them,” Snee said, noting there is a wide array of choices. “The food is good, too,” Pinson said. The nursing home is seeking volunteers who are at least 18 years old, who are willing to make an hour commitment every week, for at least a year, Snee said. They want the continuity to make the program meaningful for the veteran. Those who are interested can come over to tour the facility and fill out an application form, Snee said. They can give it a try a couple of times,

to see if it is a good fit, she said. If they want to proceed, a background check will be done at the state’s expense, Snee said. That’s necessary to protect the nursing home residents and its staff, she explained. The nursing home, which opened in 1999, is a 120-bed facility at 6919 Parkway Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes. Pinson and Snee have high hopes for this new volunteer program. “It will make a big difference in some of our veterans’ lives, to have that social connection,” Pinson said, noting that the lack of personal relationships can lead to loneliness and depression. Snee also encouraged anyone who wants to help at the nursing home, even if they’re not drawn to this opportunity, to give her a call. There are plenty of ways to pitch in, she said. For more information, call Snee at (813) 558-5000, ext. 1424.

From ‘Wallflower,’ the perks of repetitive learning

By Tom Jackson

tjackson@lakerlutznews.com

O

n the topic of what is suitable reading for students of impressionable ages, the recent action attempted by a handful of parents at Pasco Middle School is instructive mostly because it is terribly familiar. Every couple of years, it seems, certain grownups will flex their preferences in an attempt to assert preemptory authority over what youngsters are either assigned or even allowed to read. In 2014, it was a John Long Middle School parent who created a stir when John Green’s popular and well-reviewed “Paper Towns” landed on the mandatory summer reading list. Now, the book in contention is Stephen Chbosky’s 1999 novel,“The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” which falls into the same genre:

a coming-of-age tale. This one is told from the perspective of a bright, sensitive 15-yearold who, despite his willingness to simply observe from the sidelines, is summoned to experience virtually every cynical, malevolent or simply awkward social situation known to modern America. Somehow,“Wallflower” became assigned reading for Pasco Middle School seventhgraders taking advanced language arts. That’s “somehow,” because the book got into students’ hands almost totally unvetted. Pasco Middle’s copies came courtesy of a spend-it-or-lose-it philosophy rampant in taxpayer-supported enterprises. The school had dollars lingering in its materials fund at the end of the last fiscal year and, rather than return them to the cash-strapped district, they were hastily spent on the recommendation of an assistant principal and teacher who’d seen the 2012 movie and had read the publisher’s tout sheet, but not the book itself. With a box of books that benefited from Hollywood branding just lying around, it was inevitable “Wallflower” would become part of somebody’s curriculum, which it did a few weeks ago. Luckily, the teacher assigning the book is a long-term member of the faculty who has a reputation for thoroughly reviewing materials assigned students. Oh, wait. The complete opposite of that. The deed was perpetrated by a long-term substitute who also had not read “Wallflower.” I am confident Pasco’s public school

Reclaimed water gets go-ahead By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County commissioners have approved a $13 million reclaimed water project, with a 25-year lease agreement. Construction costs for the project will be shared with the Southwest Florida Water Management District, which is providing about $7 million, including an estimated $5 million for construction. The goals for the project are to provide the county with up to 5 million gallons of reclaimed water a day, restore natural habitats harmed by well field pumping, and to recharge the Floridan aquifer. Pasco’s residences and golf courses are among targeted beneficiaries of the reclaimed water project. The new facility will be built on about 237 acres of the 4G Ranch, a working cattle farm of about 2,905 acres, off State Road 52 in Land O’ Lakes. The total lease costs are estimated at about $2.3 million for 25 years, but the lease can be extended for three 10-year periods. Lease payments of about $40,000 will be paid in 2016, according to the agreement between Pasco and landowner,William Ted Phillips Sr. Phillips is also chairman of Phillips & Jordan, the company hired for the project’s construction phase.

Four commissioners voted to support the project and lease agreement, but Pasco County Commissioner Jack Mariano dissented. He argued that more should be done to review alternate sites for the project, including at least one property in the Hudson area. Mariano also said leasing land, as opposed to owning it, might not be the best financial choice long-term. “We need to look at all the options,” he said. Construction on a series of manmade wetlands is expected to begin in 2016, with initial testing and start date for the system in 2018. Reclaimed water for the wetlands will be delivered and treated via a network of pipes, a pumping station and an existing reclaimed water main near the 4G Ranch. The location of the property, between the Cross Bar well fields and the Cypress Creek well fields, is critical, said Michael Carballa, the county’s utilities engineer director. “For decades, pumping (of water) has caused degradation to surface waters of natural habitat in these lands and areas,” Carballa said. In some areas, such as Big Fish Lake near Masaryktown,Tampa Bay Water is paying to drill wells to draw water out of the aquifer to augment surface waters, he said.“Projects

staffers are fans of handing out homework. Is it possible they do none of their own? How do you buy for a middle school population, let alone assign to a passel of 13-year-olds, a book no one has read? No, forget reading. That could devour an entire weekend. How do you buy or assign a book no one has so much as subjected to an internet search? Within an otherwise glowing description, Wikipedia notes “Wallflower” was banned by some school districts. Some? Further investigation reveals “Wallflower” is a perennial target of angry parents and appalled school board members across the nation. This does not mean the critics of “Wallflower” are correct, necessarily, or even that Chbosky’s work doesn’t have an appropriate age-group audience. Still, when a cursory search triggers caution flags, it’s a sure sign other education professionals should proceed warily. Alas, wariness did not prevail at Pasco Middle, which had money to burn and at least one class with late-year time to kill. Small wonder parents staggered by the book’s frank descriptions of suicide, masturbation, drug use and homosexuality were not salved by the methods employed by an administration and faculty they want and need to trust. Listen, it’s easy enough to rebuke redfaced parents and committees that issue tut-tutting opinions over questionable material as collections of rubes and yahoos.Try to make an argument on behalf of pulling

books out of the hands of students or off library shelves without conjuring images of ignorant villagers mobbed up with pitchforks and torches, ready to deliver swift and permanent retribution to some poor, misunderstood innocent. It’s almost impossible. But what I wrote in June 2014, the last time something like this came up, applies now: Generally speaking, banning books is a bad idea. On the other hand, virtually every rule has an exception, and so it is with this. When it comes to what goes into a youngster’s mind, parents are the ultimate source authority. You might not approve of what mom and dad choose to withhold or endorse, but you know what? Tough. If parents oppose exposing the teens under their care to the rough-and-tumble of life you know is out there and, in your wisdom, you think those shielded kids are being ill-served, well, good for you. Also, it’s none of your business. Meanwhile, it’s on each school at every level, from the classroom teacher to the principal to the superintendent, to be mindful about the individual pace of exposure to the world their parents are willing to endure. Pasco Middle School failed that fundamental assignment at every turn. Its sadder-but-wiser lesson applies across the region.

like this take a product that we essentially don’t use as much as we should and put it to a better use.” Some concerns were voiced, however. Owners of the Barthle Brothers Ranch, adjacent to the reclaimed water project, are worried about how reclaimed water operations could affect their land. Larry Barthle, a third-generation rancher, said the family supports the project and favors reclaimed water, but has some concerns. The language in the agreement is too vague in describing protections against negative impacts to surrounding lands, including flooding, Barthle said.

“What does adverse water mean?” Barthle said. Mike Hancock, from Swiftmud’s Water Resources division, told commissioners that additional monitoring wells could be installed on Barthle’s property or “wherever it’s needed.” With the county’s increasing growth, Pasco County Commissioner Ted Schrader said, “This is a model project. I think it’s a win-win for everybody.” As the county grows, the project might be expanded. “If the project were successful, we’d like nothing better than to replicate it,” said Carballa.

NATURE NOTES

Growing bulbs in the Florida garden By Nicole Pinson

Special to The Laker/Lutz News

Did you know you can grow bulbs year after year in Florida? When we talk about bulbs, there are “true bulbs” and bulb-like plants.Your true bulbs are those plants that contain all the plant parts, such as roots, an underground stem, a flower bud and fleshy leaves. These plant parts are stored in an underground structure called a bulb. These underground storage structures make them very tough. Examples of true bulbs include lilies, tulips, society garlic and amaryllis. Other “bulb-like” plants such as gladiolus and caladiums are comprised of corms, tubers, tuberous roots or rhizomes. For generalization purposes, most plant guides refer to both true bulbs and bulb-like plants as bulbs. Picking the right bulbs for Florida can be a bit tricky. But, once you learn which bulbs are best for Florida, you can easily grow them and have color throughout the year. Not only do bulbs provide beautiful flowers, but they also have strappy leaves and interesting foliage. The different shades of green add structure, variety, texture and contrast to the garden. Because of our tropical and subtropical growing conditions, you will want to plant bulbs that are adapted to our region for the best success.A great resource is the publication Bulbs for Florida available at UFDC.ufl.edu/IR00002886/0001.This guide provides information on selecting, planting, caring for and propagating bulbs. Table 1 lists bulbs that are most desirable and easiest to grow in Florida. Stick to this, and you will add diversity and beauty to your landscape. Some of my favorite bulbs are African lily (also called agapanthus), amaryllis, blood lily, caladium, rain lilies and crinum. Be sure to read the cultural notes for the bulbs you

choose, because the notes include additional tips on care, location and pest control. If you want to experiment, try planting some bulbs from Table 2, or as UF/IFAS refers to them,“Bulbs for the Avid Gardener.” These bulbs may be a bit more challenging, but they are worth trying. One bulb that I am going to try from this list is a favorite cut flower- Alstroemeria.

Avoid growing bulbs — or giving bulbs as gifts — that do not grow well in Florida due to our temperatures and warm winters. These bulbs, such as tulips and some lilies, will not receive the cold temperatures they need to grow well and bloom. Some of my favorite Florida gardens contain bulbs that are planted in clumps among other landscape plants. Imagine looking out at a backyard garden and seeing shell ginger, crinums, irises and amaryllis among traditional shrubs such as hibiscus or plumbago. I use bulbs to brighten shady spots and add them to bouquets. Many times, I am surprised by them when they pop up. Most bulbs grow well in sun to part shade. When planting bulbs, make sure to plant the right side up. Follow spacing and fertilizer recommendations. Bulbs such as amaryllis will produce seed heads after flowering, and if left on the plant, they will reduce the amount of flowers next year. In order to have more blooms, cut off old flowers and seed heads. However, resist the urge to cut off yellow leaves until they turn completely brown because these leaves are making and storing food or energy for the bulb. Eastern lubber grasshoppers are one of the biggest pest problems with bulbs like lilies and crinums. Control them when they are young nymphs, rather than when they are large grasshoppers. Handpicking is the least toxic method of control. When young, these grasshoppers congregate on the plants in the morning and evening, and this makes them easy to remove. Pests such as aphids and mealybugs can be controlled with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil. Fungal problems, such as rust and anthracnose, often develop during periods of high rainfall or are spread by wind. If the disease persists, apply a fungicide for disease control. Bulbs add color and interest to the gar-

den, and they are easily propagated. Depending on the bulb, you can propagate them by division, offsets, bulblets or cuttings. Plus, you will have bulbs to share with friends and family, or to transplant and fill up pots or sparse areas of your garden. Growing bulbs in Florida is easy and enjoyable. Class of

A SPECIAL KEEPSAKE EDITION FOR GRADUATES, THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2016!

Pomp, circumstance, pride and joy By B.C. Manion, bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

D

uring this graduation season, thousands of students from The Laker/Lutz News’ coverage area will signify the end of their high school years in commencement exercises. Some will march in intimate ceremonies on the school campus, while others file into huge auditoriums. Some ceremonies will take place in the morning, while others occur in the afternoon or at night. Regardless of the time or setting, these commencement exercises have something in common:They mark a rite of passage, as young men and women leave high school behind to pursue a future shaped by their dreams and desires. Members of the Class of 2016 within

northern Hillsborough, and East and Central Pasco report varying ambitions. Some want to study medicine, finance, engineering, law, business, biochemistry, or neuroscience. Others want to pursue

careers in applied mathematics, quantitative economics, electrical and computer engineering, political science or pastoral ministries. Some will head to Georgia Institute of Technology or Duke University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology or the United States Naval Academy. Others have chosen the University of Florida, Florida State University, the University of Central Florida or Pensacola Christian College. Some will stick closer to home, continuing their education at such places as the University of Tampa, Saint Leo University, Rasmussen College, the University of South Florida, Pasco-Hernando State College or Hillsborough Community College. The ceremonies will have a universal ring to them. There will be speeches and music. The reading of each graduate’s name. The jubilation when the event concludes. At the same time, each will be unique because every graduate has his or her own story. Many have distinguished themselves by going far beyond the call of duty. They have demonstrated a commitment to learning and have earned grade point averages well above the 4.0 achieved by earning straight As in traditional courses. They earned those scores by embracing rigorous curriculum, often earning college credit through Advanced Placement and dual enrollment courses.

Their individual dreams may differ, but members of the Class of 2016 have some things in common. They experienced the beginning of a new millennium. They witnessed the election of the nation’s first African-American president. They’ve embraced the technological revolution, including the birth of YouTube and Smartphones,Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media tools. When they started school, the word “Selfie” didn’t exist. When they were kids, the symbol now used in a Twitter hashtag was called a “pound sign.” They’ve seen big changes in school, too. Now, instead of listening to lectures and reading through textbooks, they’re often engaged in lessons that incorporate live video streaming and other technological advances — to bring relevant events happening in real time, in the real world, into the classroom. They’ve also been educated during a time when increasing calls for accountability created a backlash against testing by teachers and parents, alike. But for these students, it’s time now to put all those high school exams, papers and projects behind them and to celebrate their successes. It’s time to savor the moment. To pose for photos. To gather with family and friends. It’s time to close one chapter, and to begin fresh again. Join us, as we congratulate the Class of 2016.

Co ody & Russell Adams s

Congratulations to our graduating ating senior seni s. Yo ou are the 50th graduating class we have honored onored since we began selling real estate in Lutz/Land O’’ Lakes in 1966. Back then, there wasn’t even a stop sign at the he intersection of U.S. 41 and S.R. 54. But, look at us now. As C.S. Lewis opined, things are far better today than what we left behind. Whoever thought Lutz/Land O’Lakes would be such a vibra ant place, with so many choices to live, work, shop, play and even continue your education? Russell Adams Realty is proud to have helped over a thoussand families and businesses prosper by finding them the perfec ct home and commercial property y. And someday y, we also hope to help you find the real estate of your dreams. We have been your independent,, hometown real estate company for 50 years, and proudly look forward to the nexxt 50.

NEW MRI SYSTEM IS FASTER, MORE COMFORTABLE Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging exam of the soft tissue, bone and muscle. MRIs have become one of the fastest-growing types of medical diagnostic tests in the United States. Florida Hospital Zephyrhills recently installed a MAGNETOM Aera 1.5 T MRI System from Siemens Healthcare, for faster and more comfortable exams for patients. The new equipment boasts a wideopen bore, which is the tube-like structure of an MRI machine where the patient lies during the imaging process. This design helps reduce the closed-in feeling of traditional MRIs, and its short design allows for exams to be performed with the patient’s head outside the system. There also are patient-friendly features including a mood light application so patients can set the mood for their exam through custom lighting to create a more relaxed environment.

ICE, from page 1A party rooms totaling 17,000 square feet. Several corporate events have already been booked. Florida Hospital also will have an office there, focusing specifically on enhancing sports performance and injury prevention. “We’ve come a long way on this project (since) when we were looking at just an empty field,” said George Mitchell of Z Mitch, the facility’s developer.“It took a lot of imagination from the beginning.” Officials believe the massive facility will attract 1.5 million to 2 million visitors annually, with 40 percent coming from outside Tampa Bay. Former hockey pro Gordie Zimmermann, a Z Mitch partner, said the colossal edifice is creating a buzz as far north as Toronto and Montreal, two hockeycrazed cities. “People up there are already talking about this building,” Zimmermann said.“We had some teams up there that are in the junior leagues that actually want to come down here and do training camps and tournaments here. “It’s going to be great for our community to have the tournaments and programs — like the girls’ Olympic (hockey) team training, world-class figure skaters, USPHL (United States Professional Hockey League) teams here; we’re really looking at a top to bottom programming,” he added. Zimmermann, who was an integral cog in developing the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon, visited approximately 500 ice rinks throughout North America to conceptualize the Wesley Chapel venue. One of the complex’s features that is drawing quite a bit interest from hockey directors in Canada isn’t even ice-related — it’s the indoor sprint track. Zimmermann said more hockey players and athletes are using sprint tracks for conditioning, but Canada’s bitter cold temperatures make it difficult to train outdoors year-round. “A lot of those program directors up there were looking at our website, saying,

Following the auction of the land, plants and supplies, Koi fish, statues, entrance gates and more also will be auctioned. A preview of the property, and its inventory, will be held on June 3 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Currently, Eve’s Garden is offering 30 percent or more off on everything in the nursery. Investors representing potential hotels, restaurants, and even a day care center have made inquiries, Lynn said. For many years she has been looking for a larger property that opened up more opportunities for her business. When she started Eve’s Garden, Land O’ Lakes still had rural appeal. But, Lynn said her property is too valuable for a plant nursery now that development and growth are changing the landscape of Land O’ Lakes. And, she is ready for a quieter lifestyle. Lynn grew up in New York. Her interest in bonsai came early when her mother would drop her off at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden. At age 8, she would spend hours learning the ancient art of bonsai. Zimmermann already has a hockey and skating department in place. Kevin Wolter, who spent 30 years within the USA Hockey Coaching Education program, was named as the facility’s general manager. Shari Trotter, the figure skating director at the Ashburn Ice House in Washington D.C., was hired to serve as the facility’s executive figure skating director. Moreover, two maintenance staff members will be coming aboard in June to begin managing the facility’s refrigeration program. In total, 20 full-time and 30 part-time employees will be working at the facility, Zimmermann said. The initial opening was set for October 2015, but it was delayed by the weather and issues with the installation of the refrigeration system.

It’s almost like a work of art, but it’s living art.” Initially, Lynn thought about keeping a small shop open in Land O’ Lakes, but instead she hopes that customers will make the scenic, one-hour drive to Groveland. She is in early stages of building a garden and gift shop with an Asian theme.A greenhouse and a 25,000-square-foot warehouse and packing plant are new additions to the property. When she first eyed the site, Lynn said,“It was weeds, and you could barely go through it.” Long-term, she plans to tap into the growing trend of agritourism that is popular, especially in central Florida. The customer base is growing, as people seek activities that are farm-based and pastoral. Within about five miles of Groveland, developers are planning to expand The Villages, a retirement community outside Orlando. About 2,000 new homes will be built. Lynn is planning ahead to a grand opening of the new Eve’s Garden in Groveland in December. “We’ll make it a splendid Asian thing,” said Lynn.

The program is geared toward those around age 5 and older. It will be offered at the Lutz Community Center, which is next to the library, on June 14 at 11 a.m., and again at 2 p.m. It lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Meg Heimstead, supervisor for the Creative Arts Theatre and ArtReach, said she enjoys watching children’s reactions to the shows. “It’s such a joyous experience, when a child sees a puppet come to life and that puppet interacts with them,” Heimstead said. The performers aim to encourage children to read, she said, noting the presentations are based on, or inspired by, literary sources. Another show being presented through the Lutz Branch Library features dogs and comedy. “The Tricky Dogs Show” will be presented June 28 from 2 p.m. to 3.p.m. Like the puppet show, this show, which features a circus-style dog comedy act, will be at the Lutz Community Center, 98 First Ave. N.W. The Lutz Branch Library, which hosts a number of other special events every month, is at 101 W. Lutz Lake Fern Road in Lutz. Upcoming events at other area libraries are: At the Jimmie B. Steinbrenner and Gaither claim state titles By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The varsity baseball teams for Steinbrenner and Gaither high schools each completed impressive seasons, with both teams capturing state titles. Steinbrenner took its first baseball state title with a 9-4 win over Oviedo Hagerty in the Class 8A Florida High School Athletic Association state championship game on May 21 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. The Warriors (27-5) trailed Hagerty 4-1 in the sixth inning before erupting for an eight-run seventh inning, thanks to timely run production from junior Patrick Morris, and seniors Ryan Russell and Drew Burkhart. On the mound, Morris and fellow junior Dave Crawford combined to pitch seven innings, giving up four runs (two earned). The Warriors entered the state championship game on a 13-game winning streak, with their last defeat being a 7-3 road loss against Hillsborough High on March 29. For next season, the Warriors lose eight seniors, but return ace right-handed pitcher CJ Van Eyk (12 wins, 0.77 ERA, 130 strikeouts in 91 innings). Morris, the team’s top power hitter with four home runs and 11 doubles in 2016, also returns. Gaither’s team prevailed in a nail-biting 2-1 extra-inning game over Venice High, securing the program’s first Class 7A FHSAA state championship. The Cowboys (20-9) held a 1-0 into the third inning before Venice tied the game 11.The Gaither offense finally got a spark in the eighth inning when leadoff hitter Jose Cadenas singled, and eventually scored the winning run on a Venice throwing error. Gaither senior pitchers David Masuck and Josh Bobrowski held Venice’s offense in check, combining to allow just one run on seven hits (no extra base hits), and one walk. The Cowboys lose eight seniors from this year’s squad, including ace lefty Gavin

The 6-foot-2 senior led the Bulldogs in scoring (22.6 points per game), rebounding (8.2 rebounds per game), assists (5.4 assists per game) and steals (4.8 steals per game) last season, helping to guide Zephyrhills (275) to the Class 6A state semifinals. The team, which lost to Poinciana High in February on a score of 70 to 52, had not made an appearance at the state semifinals since 1966. “Jeremy’s a very good player, and he was a very good on-court presence,” former Zephyrhills coach Alan Reed said after the 2015-2016 season. “He scored a lot of points, but a lot of times he distributed the ball.” The now-retired Reed said he was surprised Oppenheimer didn’t receive more college looks, but acknowledged his former star player needed to add size and explosiveness to succeed at the next level. “I think he’s got to get a little more physically stronger,” Reed said.“I think he’s got some things to work on, basically his physical strength and his quickness are two things he needs to improve a little bit.”

Saint Leo wins national golf championship Saint Leo University’s men’s golf team made history on May 21 by claiming the school’s first national championship in any sport by capturing the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship in Denver, Colorado. The Lions used a 3-2 score in match play to defeat Chico (California) State, just two days after Saint Leo freshman Hugo Bernard claimed the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Individual Title. “We got off to a good start, and that makes it easier on the coach and the players,” head coach Chris Greenwood said in a release.

“I didn’t have to say anything special, I just told them to keep doing what they were doing. We didn’t make any changes, just go out and play as aggressive as you can.” The Lions smashed the 54-hole team record at the NCAA Championships at -26 — 10 strokes under Florida Southern’s mark in 1999 — and followed up with stellar performances in match play. Saint Leo made it through the quarterfinals and semifinals with wins over Wilmington (Delaware), and Sunshine State Conference foe Lynn University, before facing Chico State in the finals.

The Wildcats had a combined 3.40 unweighted grade point average during the third nine weeks, which is the second highest GPA since the county started giving out the award more than 12 years ago. It is also the first time Wharton boys track and field has received the award. “It was a great honor for the team to win this,” said third-year Wharton boys coach Kyle LoJacono.“What is truly special about the award is that it is a team award. Everyone’s GPA counted evenly. I’m also very pleased that our kids are getting the job done in the classroom as well as on the track, because they are students first and

Cross Creek: Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ spiritual home Worth the Trip By Kathy Steele

arjorie Kinnan Rawlings followed an unlikely path from Rochester, New York, to a rustic farmhouse in hardscrabble Florida — and to international fame as the author of “The Yearling.” Sight unseen, she and her husband, Charles Rawlings, took a risk on a working farm with 1,635 fruit-bearing trees and 150 “good” chickens. But it was there, in 1928, that Rawlings found her spiritual destination, a sense of place and belonging. Today, visitors to the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park may feel, as they step through a side gate to the farmhouse, that they are stopping by to visit a friend. On a wooden sign, Rawlings’ own words say it all,“Here is home.” A sandy path leads to the farmhouse. Chickens and roosters roam the yard, scratching in the dirt. Shirts and sheets on some days are pegged to a clothesline. A rustic-looking barn, off to the side, is the gathering point for guided tours of the 19th century farmhouse. Otherwise, visitors are free to roam where they will, to peek through windows into a faded tenant’s house, imagine turning the key to a yellow 1940 Oldsmobile parked beside the house, or stroll in solitude among hammock trees and palmettos on trails that loop from farmhouse to tenant house. “There’s a feeling people get when they come to the property,” said Rick Mulligan, a tour guide at the park.“It’s what she writes about. It’s peaceful. It’s restorative. It’s Old Florida. It’s essentially the same as when she was here.” More than 23,000 visitors walk through that gate each year. Some know scraps and pieces of Rawlings’ life, gleaned from two Hollywood movies based on “The Yearling” and her autobiography,“Cross Creek.” But for some, the journey is a pilgrimage to the home of a writer they came to know in their childhood through the coming of age story of a young boy and his pet deer. The state park is bare of commercial trappings. There is no gift shop, no bookstore. The parkland in soul and spirit is the same homestead where Rawlings lived for nearly two decades. The citrus grove is gone, but fruit trees still thrive. A kitchen garden is planted and harvested by tour guides that work there. Chickens lay eggs in a barn that is a replica of the original one. Almost all of the furniture in the house is original, kept in storage for many years after her death by her second husband, Norton Baskin. It was here in the 1930s when Rawlings saw her first stories published, “Cracker Chidlings” and “Jacob’s Ladder.” Her first novel “South Moon Under” — about moonshining — followed in 1933. Then, in 1938, “The Yearling” came out, and Rawlings won a Pulitzer Prize. She had struggled in obscurity for years, writing Gothic-inspired stories that didn’t impress editors or readers. Maxwell Perkins, a renowned editor at Scribner’s, encouraged Rawlings to abandon Gothic and write what she knew – the lives and often hard times of her neighbors who scraped by, living off the land. “She truly found her inspiration when she came down here,” said Mulligan. “It was a

The kitchen in Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ home was well-stocked, and the author was known for using fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and eggs in the meals she prepared for her guests. As Rick Mulligan guides tours at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park, his admiration for the writer and his knowledge about her life are apparent.

crazy risk. She almost had to give it up.” After the 1929 Depression, Rawlings and her husband divorced, and she struggled to hold onto the farm. With literary success, financial benefits followed. One of her first large expenditures was a bathroom and indoor plumping. But, an outhouse still stands, just outside a back door. Daily, she sat at a table on the veranda, typing on a Remington Noiseless typewriter and chain-smoking Lucky Strikes. She had a reputation for speaking her mind, though Baskin once described her as the shyest person he ever knew. One thing she would never let pass – the mispronunciation of her maiden name. It is KinNAN (with the emphasis on the second syllable), not Kinnan (with the emphasis on the first). “She would correct you,” Mulligan said. Rawlings entertained often at the farmhouse, inviting neighbors and fellow writers including Robert Frost and Zora Neale Hurston.

Perkins and actor Gregory Peck, when he was filming “The Yearling,” also came. She relied on oil lamps until the house was wired for electricity in 1950. She suffered two bouts of malaria while at Cross Creek. The farmhouse, room by room, is left as she lived in it. When Rawlings died in 1953 at the age of 57, she willed her property to the University of Florida.Today, the state’s park system manages the property. More than a half-century later, visitors continue to be attracted to the place where Rawlings worked and lived. They come from everywhere, from Florida, New Hampshire, Arizona, North Carolina and Rawlings’ home state of New York. But, Mulligan said international guests also arrive, including residents of Poland and a professor from China who teaches Rawlings’ work to her students. “She was a compelling individual,” the tour guide said.

Besides being an acclaimed writer, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings was an avid reader, as demonstrated by these shelves filled with books at her Cross Creek home.

Parry is a 3-year old Shih-Tzu — full of energy, and at times, rambunctious. While initially hesitant and standoffish toward strangers and other dogs, Parry eventually gets along with others. He particularly enjoys human food, chew toys (especially rawhide) and running around in circles outdoors. Parry also has an obsession with stealing socks and leaving them on the floor for his owner to pick up. When tired, Parry likes to nap on his owner’s bed and watch TV. Parry’s proud owner is Kevin Weiss of Carrollwood.
