Honor Roll, according to a school district news release. From those, three districts were singled out — one large, one medium and one small, based on an analysis of three years of AP data, the release says. Pasco was honored in the category of large districts, as defined by those with 50,000 students or more.

Pasco Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning shared the news with district staff in a May 29 video posted on YouTube “The top district, in the nation — this is a big deal,” Browning said. “There are more than 13,000 school districts in the United States, and our school district — our stuSee HONORS, page 9A

Hitting the gyms, to make up for lost time

As Florida reopens for business, lots of people have begun hitting the gyms and fitness facilities again. Whether it’s to take a dip, walk a treadmill, lift weights or work with ropes, gyms are beginning to see activity again. Unlike some businesses, they had been totally shut down in recent weeks, due to concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19. Above, Mandy Johnson, 43, of Land O' Lakes, burns calories during her 30-minute to 45-minute workout on a recent Saturday afternoon at Anytime Fitness, at 1408 N. Dale Mabry Highway in Lutz.

Nancie Howley, 62, of Lutz, is working on her steps on the stairstep machine during a recent workout at Anytime Fitness, 1408 N. Dale Mabry in Lutz. She steps for about an hour, three times a week.

Gabe Marrero, 36, of Wesley Chapel, uses dumbbell curls to enhance the size of his biceps during a Saturday afternoon workout at Strive Athletic Club, 2626 Cypress Ridge Blvd., in Wesley Chapel. He typically works out five days a week, doing cardio and strength-training exercises.

Organizers cancel Lutz Experts offer ‘next Fourth of July festivities steps’ advice for By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

COVID-19 has claimed another victim. The traditional Independence Day festivities in Lutz will not be held this year. For decades, the community, north of Tampa, has attracted thousands of people to its annual Fourth of July parade, and associated activities. But, this year, organizers decided it was just too risky to stage the annual event. “We mulled it over for many, many weeks. It wasn’t a decision made lightly, I can assure you,” said Annette Bellingar, president of the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club. Ultimately, said Pat Serio, a club board member:“We had to choose the safe route.” Bellingar said:“When we thought about it, we thought there is just no way that we’re going to get people to be doing the proper social distancing at an event such as this. “Can you imagine having all of those people there and saying,‘You’ve got to be 6

feet apart?’” Bellingar said. The close quarters between people raised concerns, Serio said. Plus, she noted: “In the usual extreme heat we have on Fourth of July, even mask-wearing could be difficult.” Still, canceling the festivities was not an easy choice, Serio said. The event has been an annual tradition for many families. Generally, the parade featured widely known local organizations, such as the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club, the Little Women of Lutz, the Lutz Civic Association, Boy Scout Troop 12 and the North Tampa Lutz Cadet Squadron. Local businesses, churches, law enforcement agencies, schools, military organizations politicians and candidates for the honorary Lutz Guv’na are mainstays, too. It’s been a parade that features antique cars, fire trucks, sheriff’s patrol cars, belly dancers, martial arts groups, churches, miliSee FESTIVITIES, page 9A

Moderator Annika Pergament, of NY 1, asked panelists about current economic conditions and asked them to provide practical suggestions for business owners to help them get to the other side. The webinar, called “Looking beyond: What’s next to help local businesses succeed,” featured David Asman, a host on the Fox Business Network; Mark Langford, director of the North Texas SBDC (Small Business Development Center); and Bridget Weston, acting director of SCORE. Cypress Creek Middle set to open this fall By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

When a new school year opens, Cypress Creek Middle students will finally have school buildings to call their own. Middle and high school students have been sharing the campus, formerly known as Cypress Creek Middle High, since 2017. Beginning this fall, however, there will be a middle school for grades five through eight, and a high school for grades nine through 12. Construction on the middle school began in 2019. “It’s more than on track,” said Ray Gadd, deputy superintendent for Pasco Schools. “It’s as ahead of schedule as we’ve ever been.” Like all public schools in Pasco County, a regular school day likely will be very different from any previous school years. Planning sessions are ongoing for the fall start of school, with keen attention on how the COVID-19 pandemic will dictate changes in school operations. Gadd said he anticipates an announcement on what to expect for district schools by July 1. Cypress Middle School has a student capacity of about 1,600 students. Gadd surmises the first year enrollment will be somewhat lower. Construction for the school building is estimated at about $43.5 million. It shares the same campus as the high school, but is about 15 acres north of it. With a curriculum focus on performing arts, the building design includes a black box theater, chorus, dance and orchestra rooms.

Cypress Creek Middle School is ready to open on its new campus.

Also, Pasco-Hernando State College is expected to open its Instructional Performing Arts Center on the same campus this fall. The district initially planned to open both a high school and a middle school on the Cypress Creek campus at the same time, but a lack of funding forced it to use the campus for both middle and high school students. The campus opened in 2017, for students in grades six through 11, with a senior class added the following year. Care was taken to keep the younger students and older students separated, and to provide middle school and high school programs. Opening of the middle school in the fall also required a realignment of school boundaries affecting primarily students liv-

ing in the Seven Oaks subdivision of Wesley Chapel, who attended John Long Middle School and Wiregrass Ranch High School. While the district gears up to open a new school, it’s preparing for how it will operate safely amidst COVID-19 concerns. Gadd noted there’s no precedence to follow. “We look at everything the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) does, but CDC has not provided us with any pragmatic, practical information,” Gadd said. Figuring out how to do social distancing isn’t easy, especially with kindergarten and elementary students, he said. “How do you keep kindergartners from interacting?” Gadd asked. One option to keep younger students

safe would be to keep them together as one classroom group, he said. There would be no intermingling with students in other classrooms. And, activities with each group, including recess, would be done as a unit. Middle school and high school students are more mature, and more likely to handle social distancing, Gadd said. But, there are many more issues to resolve — even something as simple as getting students to and from school. “How do we get kids on the bus and off the bus?” Gadd said. Work sessions are ongoing. “Our intent is to open all schools,” Gadd said. “Right now, we haven’t received any guidance from the state suggesting otherwise.”

This is a conceptual rendering of the planned recreation center at Wesley Chapel District Park. The rendering is subject to change.

Recreation center coming to Wesley Chapel park By Kathy Steele ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Construction is expected to begin this month on a new recreation center at Wesley Chapel District Park. When the project is done — expected in the summer of 2021 — athletes will be able to dunk basketballs and quilters will be able to sew squares in the comfort of an air-conditioned building. These are just a couple of the groups that will be able to make use of the new amenity. An official groundbreaking ceremony is expected in mid-July, if possible, given concerns about COVID-19. Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore is enthusiastic about what the new center will bring to the community. “This is the fastest-growing area, not just (Wesley Chapel), in particular, but this part of the county,” he said.“There is a huge need for this.” Moore is very familiar with the district park. He coached flag football, baseball and soccer there when his three children were younger. “I saw the void and the need there for an indoor facility,” Moore said. Outdoor activities in summer present problems. “Florida heat and weather when playing basketball on hard ground, it’s a very unpleasant time,” Moore said. The Pasco County Board of Commissioners approved a bid from Keator Construction in May to build an approximately 17,800-square-foot recreation center at a cost of about $4 million. The Ocoee-based company was among 17 companies that bid on the project. Commissioners set aside about $3 million for the project in fiscal year 2017 and 2018 budgets.Additional funds will be transferred from the Connerton District Park to Wesley Chapel District Park, and from the

sale of county property, according to county records. The district park already is packed with outdoor sports activities, including several athletic fields for youth and adults, a lighted soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, picnic tables and grills for barbecues. The park also is home to the only inclusive playground in the county, specifically designed for children with disabilities. The air-conditioned center also may benefit the special needs children, who could possibly attend future special needs summer camps, Moore said. “This will really, really help with that program,” he said.“It keeps kids out of the heat.” The new facility will feature a gymnasium with a regulation-size basketball court — that can be converted into two smaller courts, two volleyball courts or four pickleball courts. There will be restrooms and showers, too. Multi-purpose areas will accommodate a range of activities for groups, such as the Rotary Club, community associations, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The design provides a “wonderful, inviting glass façade and check-in area,” said Andrew Baxter, Pasco County’s director of facilities management. A bandshell, which will lead to the south lawn, can be used as a stage for special events, Baxter said. The Wesley Chapel recreation center is similar to the Land O’ Lakes Recreation Complex, but more updated and modern, Baxter added. “It (the design) is unique to this particular parcel,” he said, especially in its use of the south lawn.“We’re really excited to be partnering with parks and recreation on this project.” Moore envisions the center as a gathering place for community events, meetings, sewing clubs, bridge clubs, yoga classes, art classes and more. “It’s not just a great place for children,” Moore said.“It’s for people of all ages.”

Get Help with Achieving Your Financial Goals with Edward Jones Advisor Bill Kimbrough By Kelli Carmack kcarmack@lakerlutznews.com

With a career spanning over 34 years, financial advisor Bill Kimbrough knows how to help you answer the question, “Can I financially get there?” By taking the time to learn the individual goals of each of his clients, Kimbrough builds a strategy tailored just for them. He identifies the most appropriate investments and services to help clients reach their financial goals. Having a financial advisor like Kimbrough truly helps ease the challenges that come with making financial decisions. “When you try to do it all on your own, you’re subject to your own emotional whim. An advisor really serves as an objective force,” says Kimbrough. Following in his father’s footsteps, Kimbrough became a financial advisor in 1986 with E.F. Hutton, and spent the past 15 years working with Franklin Templeton Investments. But, after recognizing his true calling to serve individual investors, Kimbrough decided to join Edward Jones in the summer of 2019. “We focus on the everyday person, which you don’t find in many other firms,” Kimbrough says. Being in business since 1922, Edward Jones is just two years away from its 100th anniversary. With more than 14,200 branch offices in all 50 states and through its affiliate

in Canada, Edward Jones has more branch offices in North America than any other brokerage firm in the country. One of the biggest misconceptions Kimbrough hears is that once you reach a certain age, you can’t invest. “The fact of the matter is, it’s never too late to start investing. You’d be surprised what you could save and accomplish in a matter of 10 to 15 years. You may not be a millionaire, but every bit counts,” says Kimbrough. Some of the most important lessons Kimbrough learned throughout his career is to stay focused on the long-term, stick with high-quality investments, save as much as you can and, most importantly, treat people fairly. “People have different lives, goals, sets of values… the more I get to know my clients, the better off I’ll be to help them,” says Kimbrough. Kimbrough resides in Lutz with his wife Nina. When he’s not working at Edward Jones, Kimbrough gets involved in the community by being a member of The Rotary Club of Land O’ Lakes and The Greater Pasco Chamber of Commerce. “Getting involved in these organizations has been a wonderful experience for me. I look forward to continuing my community involvement in this extraordinary area,” says Kimbrough.

STUDENT MONEY TIPS

The Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) offers tips to save money on intangible costs when comparing the costs of various colleges. Tangible costs include tuition and fees, and room and board. Intangible costs include everything else: textbooks and supplies; computers; and personal items, such as shampoo, clothes, entertainment, laundry, and other expenses. Students can save money by controlling the discretionary costs of their lifestyle, by finding sales or using coupons, and looking out for buy one, get one free deals. Cutting back on treats, like entertainment and dining out, also can save quite a bit of money. Or, students can do these things less often. The less spent on intangibles, the less is needed to take out in student loans. KHEAA is a public, nonprofit agency established to improve students’ access to college. It provides information about financial aid and financial literacy, for free, to students and parents. For more about KHEAA services, visit KHEAA.com. SINCE 1946

New River library gets makeover ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

New River Branch Library was feeling its age after more than nearly 30 years of service to patrons in Zephyrhills and Wesley Chapel. But soon, New River will be like new again. Construction on major renovations and an expanded community garden is on schedule for a fall 2020 completion. “We’re moving forward on it.The (coronavirus) pandemic has not slowed down construction,” said Bob Harrison, marketing program manager for the Pasco County Libraries. All seven county libraries are slated for “a complete re-imagining from top to bottom,” Harrison said. Funding for the renovations is from the GO, or General Obligation, bonds approved by voters in November 2018. Centennial Park Branch Library in Holiday also is in the process of being renovated. When the New River renovation is finished, patrons can enjoy a new look, as well as upgrades in technology, high-efficiency air conditioning, teen and youth adult areas, faster Internet speeds, a covered walkway entry and a makerspace that opens into a shaded “classroom” for the community garden. Harrison said the covered walkway and garden space will allow for “do-it-yourself” activities. It also can be used to host gardening programs delivered by master gardeners or Pasco County Extension agents. During the COVID-19 shutdown, the original garden died off, but Judy Curran is ready to dig and plant anew when New River opens in the fall.

FRESH & DELICIOUS FOOD DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR

Curran, the library’s youth services provider, said the new garden will be larger and will have more activities. A garden that had about six raised beds will expand to about 26 beds, Curran said. About half will be for workshops and demonstrations. The rest will be open to people who want to grow flowers or vegetables. “It’s really kind of neat that the library team gave us this opportunity,” she said.“I’m hoping to expand some of my outdoor activities.” A new employee assigned to community outreach will aid in organizing events. Curran made the first plantings in 2014 when employees were encouraged to pick a special project to adopt. They could spend 10% of their work hours to make it happen. Curran got enthusiastic responses as soon as she posted her idea on the library bulletin board. The garden beds soon sprouted with help from a dozen youth and adult volunteers. New River’s garden was unique not only in Pasco County, but in Florida, as well. Curran said she even received a call from Chicago asking about the library’s garden. The Land O’ Lakes Branch Library has since planted a community garden, too. A project to plant fruit trees at New River is expected to continue. And, a new children’s activity, Story Walk, will allow children to follow a winding path where they will stop at stations and read pages from a storybook. “I think it’s going to bring even more people when we reopen,” Curran said.“This little idea I had has really expanded.” For information on New River and video on renovations, visit Facebook.com/newriverlibrary.

ASSISTED LIVING AGREEMENT

Hillsborough County has entered into an agreement with an assisted living facility to serve as a transition unit, which sets aside 60 transitional beds for senior care facility residents who were hospitalized with COVID-19, but who now do not require hospitalization. The facility, The Inn at University Village, will serve as a transitional unit between the hospital and its senior care community for those patients while they await final clearance to return to their previous residence. Patients are expected to be moved from hospitals to the facility, where they will temporarily reside in a separate wing specifically designed for COVID-19 patient. The initiative is one of several being undertaken by a senior care facility rapid response task force formed by Hillsborough County, the City of Tampa, the Florida Department of Health-Hillsborough County, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, and four hospital systems:Tampa General Hospital, BayCare, AdventHealth, and HCA HealthcareWest Florida Division.

HANDWASHING CORRECTLY

The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County urges members of the public to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and practice proper hand hygiene, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The CDC recommends practicing everyday preventive actions like social distancing (at least 6 feet), wearing a cloth face covering when you are out in public, and washing your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol also can be used, but not as a substitute for cleaning hands with soap and water. Five steps to wash hands the right way: • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap and apply soap. • Lather hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of hands, between fingers and under nails. • Scrub hands for last least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end, twice. • Rinse hands well under clean, running water. • Dry our hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

HONORS, from page 1A dents and our teachers — earned this award. “This honor is shared by all of you,” the superintendent continued. Even though AP classes are taken in high school, the success that occurs at high school, builds upon the successes achieved in middle and elementary schools, he said. “So, when Taija McCullough, at Zephyrhills High School, does well on an AP exam — the staff at Woodland Elementary should be very proud. “That’s why this is such a big deal. This honor truly is a reflection on what goes on in all our classrooms,” Browning added. “Over a three-year period, we increased the number of students taking rigorous AP courses. We increased the number of underrepresented and minority students taking AP classes. And, at the same time, we improved our Pass Rate — those scoring a 3 or above,” the superintendent added. The College Board’s AP courses offer high school students a chance to get a taste of the rigor of college-level work. The College Board says that research has shown that AP classes help students be better prepared for college, be more likely to enroll in college and be more likely to graduate in four years. Students must earn a 3 or higher on the AP Exam to earn college credit, which, in turn, can reduce their future college tuition costs. Sixty percent of all AP students in Pasco scored a 3 or higher on at least one exam in 2019, according to district figures. “Over the last three years, our students earned the equivalent of $3 million in tuition costs,” Browning said. Trevor Packer, head of the College Board AP Program, explained the significance of the honor, in a district news release.“This award shows that Pasco County Schools is challenging many students to achieve at the highest levels,” Packer said. “Pasco is ensuring that a more diverse population of students is earning college credit in a wide variety of AP subjects. Congratulations to all the educators and students whose dedication and hard work garnered this well-deserved recognition.” Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran also weighed in on the

district’s success. “This is a remarkable accomplishment that shows the nation what can happen when great teachers believe in and push students to handle the most rigorous courses. Students will always exceed our expectations,” Corcoran said, in the district’s release. “Superintendent Browning and his team are preparing a large and diverse group of students for success, and the entire State of Florida is proud of what Pasco has accomplished,” Corcoran added. The district also released another video, sharing the perspectives of Phillip Ellis, a teacher at Zephyrhills High, and Zephyrhills High student Taija McCullough. Ellis teaches AP Chemistry and AP Physics 1. He’s pleased to see more students taking AP courses and more passing the exams, as well. “I’m seeing a lot of students who otherwise may not have opted to take the class, go and get out there and try a really tough class. That’s what I’m really most proud of — that we have more students willing to try, and willing to put themselves out there to accomplish things they didn’t know they were capable of,” he said. Taking AP courses “is challenging, but it is worth it in the end,” McCullough said. It helps students to build study skills, time management and the ability to balance the demands of studying with other aspects of their lives. Taking the courses helps build confidence, too, she said. “You know you’ll do well in college,” McCullough said. Browning was obviously elated, as he announced the district’s accomplishment. “We don’t do this to get recognition. We do it because it creates opportunities for our students. It brings out the best in students,” he said. At the same time, though, the recognition is well-deserved. “I could not be more proud of what our team has accomplished, and that includes everyone. Our staff came up with an ambitious, but viable plan. Our school board saw the value and potential in the plan. Our principals bought into it. Then, in classrooms across Pasco County, our teachers and students made it happen,” the superintendent said.

FESTIVITIES, from page 1A tary jeeps, tiny dancers and kids riding bicycles. It’s also a parade where it’s not unusual for someone in the parade to break ranks and rush out to hug someone in the crowd. Traditionally, once the parade ends, a new Lutz Guv’na is sworn in over a copy of Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham,” and the bidding war begins over baked goods that were entered into the annual Cake Bake Competition. But, none of that will happen this year. “It really is heartbreaking because we know how important it is to the community. People love it. It’s a throwback to all of

our childhoods, small-town America,” Serio said. Ultimately, the event had to be cancelled, organizers said. “Sad as it is, I know, I really, really know, that we’ve done the right thing,” Bellingar said. “It would be so sad that if something like this was held this year and then following that, it brought to the surrounding area a huge spike in people coming down with the virus and maybe even passing from it,” the club president said. “We just thought that would be the most atrocious thing, ever, to happen. “Next year, we are hoping that everything would be truly wonderful, and it would be bigger and better in 2021,” Bellingar said.

about the webinar, to give local businesses a chance to benefit from the panelists’ knowledge. A quick poll taken at the front end of the session revealed that most businesses have reopened or are reopening gradually. Besides providing advice, the panelists offered words of support to business owners. Bridget Weston, acting CEO of SCORE, put it like this:“What I want all small businesses to know — whether you are completely open, opening slowly, or still struggling — is that there are resources out there to help you make the best decision for your business. You do not have to go through this alone.” SCORE, which is a nationwide network of volunteer business mentors, is there “to help you figure out what the next right step is for you and your business. You, as entrepreneurs, are resilient. We know you can get through this, and we are here to help,” she said. Asman said it’s no secret that “it’s an awful, awful moment.” The unemployment rate, at 30%, is worse than at the worst time in the Great Depression, when unemployment hit 25%, he said. But, he added:“I think there is, believe it or not, more good news to tell you than bad news. The bad news has already been cooked in.” Asman said people “want to work and they want to be able to take care of their family, and they want to buy things, as well.” But, Pergament noted, “as more states begin to open, that is the big question that lingers —how they will do, as economies and stores and businesses start to open their doors, whether there will be a resurgence.” Mark Langford, director of the North Texas SBDC (Small Business Development Center), said Texas has begun its reopening process. “From an observational standpoint, I would say the first week, the demand was not as strong as people thought,” Langford said.“People want to get out there, but they also have to balance it with,‘Is it safe to be out there?’ “Last week, again, from an observational standpoint, a lot more traffic in the businesses than there was the week before,” he said. People are interested in seeing if the rates spike with the COVID virus in the next couple of weeks, what those numbers look like, he added. “Their nature is to want to get things back to the way they were. The only thing holding them back, I think, are the safety concerns,” Langford said. Pergament said business owners are asking for advice on how to pivot their business in this changing environment. Weston said SCORE said companies need to stay connected with their clients. She said it’s a good time to promote “the why behind your company. “Connect your customers to your mission. Build that brand loyalty now,” she added. It’s also a good time for companies to think of current needs in the market and consider whether they can adapt to meet any of those needs, she said. Companies also can communicate with

Here are some tips that may help small business owners, in response to COVID-19: • Make a plan based on what you are trying to accomplish with your mission, your values and your business objectives — considering the current environment — then talk to an expert about that plan • Put your plan to paper and adapt, as new information becomes available • Check with SCORE and SBDC (both free resources) to learn more about loans, grants, training, free seminars and so forth, to help you consider your options • Seek help from mentors to prioritize your budget • Keep lines of communication open with existing clients; if you haven’t been in touch lately, get in touch • Make sure you have a social media presence, if you don’t have one; if you have one, see if it’s time to refresh it.

clients about steps they are taking to be safe for their customers.

BE PREPARED TO PIVOT

Companies need to be thinking about how they can respond to opportunities that lie within the current crisis, Langford said. “This is your opportunity as a small business owner to react quickly to the marketplace and take advantage of that,” Langford said. Small businesses, he said, are “being forced to think of ways to do business that they never have before and never even quite frankly considered. Asman said the pandemic has revealed breakdowns in the supply chain and has created new opportunities for smaller operations to compete with the giants. For instance, small businesses that couldn’t compete with Tyson and other big corporations are getting a chance to do so now, he said. He also observed that as more employees work from home, it could cause disruption for corporate real estate, in Manhattan, for example. “Big office buildings may have some serious problems,”Asman said. When it comes to making big expenditures, he advises businesses to take a wait-and-see approach. “Focus on cutting back to the bare minimum of what you need to stay in business, and then, if you have any resources left over, save them for a moment when you sense there is an opportunity opening up,”Asman said. Langford said businesses need to know their revenues, their expenses, their margins, and their costs for goods and labor. He advised businesses: “Have a shortterm plan; a mid-term plan; a long-term plan, so that you’re prepared. “It’s a whole lot easier to make decisions when you have the facts in front of you that show you, ‘Well, if I adjust this, if I change my labor here, if we streamline our menu, I can make it another 30 days; another 60 days. “Now, is the time to really drill down on those numbers,” Langford said.

This teen strikes out batters — and cancer By Kevin Weiss

J

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

ack Teeter was well on his way to another standout baseball season for Academy at the Lakes (AATL) , up until the COVID-19 pandemic canceled virtually all sporting events. The All-State athlete was leading the team with a .500 batting average through nine games. He hadn’t allowed an earned run in 14 innings pitched. In the de facto final game of the season on March 12, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound junior left-hander had a no-hitter through four innings in a mercy-rule victory against Lakeside Christian — a contest not officially documented in online stats. But, before he was racking up extra-base hits and striking out batters this season, Teeter was up against tougher opponent — cancer. The athlete was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma in late September, at 16 years old. In the months preceding, he had been having ongoing breathing and coughing issues. He had trouble completing routine baseball workouts. Doctors presumed it was a case of allergies and sports-induced asthma. The full scope of the health issue wasn’t realized until Teeter caught a parasite while volunteering at a church farm in Clearwater during the summer. His parents initially thought it was a bout of food poisoning, until weight loss and stomach issues persisted for days. Eventually, his family suspected something more was going on. Teeter first was taken to urgent care, then St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital for a series of CAT scans and medical tests. They showed lesions on his spleen and stage III lymphoma — meaning enlarged lymph nodes had spread on both sides of his diaphragm. The teen immediately started treatment. After five rounds of chemotherapy and 14 targeted doses of radiation, he was pronounced cancer-free in January. He requires checkups every three months. The initial shock of cancer didn’t fully hit Teeter until he awoke in a hospital bed about a week in. “It’s surreal, if I had to describe it,” he said.“It was crazy to think that I was only 16 years old, being taken into a hospital because of cancer. It’s like,‘Wow, this is really happening.’”

MOTIVATION THROUGH BASEBALL

As the Teeter family found out from doctors and nurses, Hodgkin lymphoma has a high treatable and survival rate in children. It’s also something several pro athletes have overcome, including a pair of Chicago Cubs All-Stars in Jon Lester and Anthony Rizzo. Reading those stories helped fuel Teeter’s drive to get back on the field again: “I realized, ‘Oh, I can make it, I can get past this, and it’s something that I can overcome and still make it regardless of what I have.’” While undergoing treatment,Teeter discovered just how much he cherished the game he began playing when he was just 4

years old. Before the diagnosis, Teeter enjoyed a sophomore campaign that garnered him Class 2A Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-State honors after leading the Wildcats in hitting (.367 average, 18 hits, 11 RBIs) and pitching (1.48 ERA, 60 strikeouts in 42.2 innings). He acknowledged that baseball is something he may have taken for granted previously, but now, he said he is “enjoying every moment” that he can. He observed,“I didn’t realize how much I did miss it, how important it was to me because I kept getting calls from teammates and friends telling me that they miss me and hope I get through it OK. It just made me realize, ‘This is a real passion for me, I am important to the team, and I got to get through it all somehow.’” In a way, baseball “brought him back to health,” said Renee Teeter, his mother. “It’s given him motivation, excitement, something for him to look forward to and work toward,” she said. Cancer also has given the teen a fresh perspective on life. He makes a point to tell anyone who’ll listen to not take what they have for granted, particularly when it comes to health. Teeter put it like this:“You never know how bad it can be until you’ve had something like I’ve have. It’s like sometimes when people complain about stupid stuff I just remind them, like, ‘C’mon, you have health, you have something that some people just don’t have and you just kind of need to appreciate it a bit more.’” That newfound outlook is something his parents have picked up on, too. “I think he got faced with his mortality a lot younger than most people do, and I think he appreciates what he has a lot more now,” said Brian Teeter, his father. The experience also made Teeter’s par-

ents even more aware of how capable their son is — in both fighting cancer and playing baseball at a high level again. “I don’t know if he surprised me, because I always knew he was a very strong kid, but I’ve been impressed by him,” Renee said.“He’s handled this very well and dealt with a lot of things, but he doesn’t know any different.” She added,“He’s done as best as he could be. He’s a trooper, not a complainer. He does what he has to do.”

GETTING HEALTHY, INNING BY INNING

Since the diagnosis,Teeter’s first baseball outing came in mid-November, in a high school tournament at Saint Leo University. The effects of ongoing treatment were evident. He was bald, thinner and noticeably weaker. His chemo port was still implanted, too. Still, he mustered up the power to pitch one full inning, getting three outs on 25 or so pitches. “I wasn’t 100% there,”Teeter said,“but, I was able to throw one inning and it was great to get back out there.” His parents were emotional, as they watched their son back on the mound. “I basically cried the entire time,”Teeter’s mother said. After barely having the strength to walk, Teeter has progressed to running, weightlifting and taking part in regular baseball activities and drills. He’s happy to report that he can get through a 30-minute workout without feeling sick. His hair, beard and strength are back, also. Now cancer-free, he is focused on becoming a better ballplayer, with aspirations to pitch in college. He’s leaned on the help and support of

coaches like his father, as well as Academy at the Lakes’ pitching coach Tony Saccamanno, and Anthony Telford and Ruben Garcia, of the Florida Baseball Institute, in Tampa. He’s working to perfect his pitch timing and mechanics, and notch his fastball up to 80 mph, adding to a repertoire that also includes a slider, curveball and changeup. Teeter’s recovery brings a smile to the face of Academy at the Lakes’ head baseball coach Ken Akins. “It’s just good to see him healthy — that’s the key,” said Akins.“I don’t think that I’ve ever seen him 100% healthy in the (two seasons) that I’ve been at the Academy, and that’s the part that I’m happy about, that’s the part I’m excited about, is to see him not have to battle anything, and really say,‘OK, now’s the time to get at it.’” When Akins first heard of Teeter’s Hodgkin lymphoma last fall, it brought back memories of another former player who had cancer. “As a head coach, as a parent, as a person, you never want to hear that, especially that a young man at the age of 16 has to deal with something like that,”Akins said.“I think it opened up some eyes on some of the other boys.” This summer, Teeter will be pitching from time to time for the Carrollwood Gators travel ball team. He’s also looking forward to his senior season because he believes he’ll finally be able to showcase his true skills and best self. “I just a want a shot to have people see what I can be like when I’m actually healthy,”Teeter said. He also hopes to inspire other youths battling cancer. “There is a light at the end of the tunnel,”Teeter said.“You’re going to come back, and you’re going to come back better than you ever were before.”

Pasco courthouse has colorful history Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders Special to The Laker/Lutz News

f you visit downtown Dade City, it’s nearly impossible not to notice the stately Historic Pasco County Courthouse. It sits in the middle of a town square, at Seventh Street and Meridian Avenue. Originally constructed in 1909, and restored in a $2.3 million renovation in 1998, the courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 20, 2006. With its Classical Revival style of architecture, the building at 37918 Meridian Ave., has a colorful history of its own. For instance, there was confusion for years over who designed the red brick building, according to various accounts published in The Tampa Tribune. Altemus Roberts was credited in local hisCOURTESY OF FIVAY.ORG tory books for designing the courthouse, but Pictured in 1909, Pasco County’s historic courthouse was added to the National Register of Historic places on Sept. 20, 2006. that was put into question after Gregory Herrmann, originally from East Pasco, moved to Texas and spotted a courthouse in Mason, Texas, which looked very much like the one in Dade City, the Tribune reported. The East Pasco man learned that an architect named Edward Columbus (E.C.) Hosford had designed the Texas courthouse. He sent that information, along with a photograph, to his brother, Eddie, who was deeply involved in local history circles. A new home for Bodega Bodega is a 20-year-old orange tabby cat. Her owner’s co-worker was moving and could not take Bodega with her so Janna Rolfe, of Wesley Chapel, gave her a home. Bodega has fallen in love with her new family. Bodega’s favorite thing to do is watch the birds at the bird feeder, from the screened-in lanai. She does not like any cat treats or people food — only dry cat kibble.

Clearwater Marine Aquarium released Stormy, a 175-pound sub adult loggerhead, back into the wild on Honeymoon Island in Pinellas County. The U.S. Coast Guard helped bring the turtle in to the aquarium after finding it entangled in a crab trap offshore of Sand Key Beach. Stormy sustained minor injuries from the entanglement and was cleared for release by the aquarium’s veterinarian and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Additionally, Clearwater Marine Aquarium recently reopened to visitors, implementing additional safety precautions to protect staff, animals and guests. The changes include: • Limiting attendance to 25% of normal capacity • Using touchless transactions • Requiring advanced reservations to select an arrival date and time, and to purchase admission online prior to visiting • Placing signs and floor decals to promote social distancing • Using barriers at transaction areas • Requiring all guest-facing staff to wear face masks • Taking daily temperature checks on all staff • Recommending that all guests wear masks and offering disposable masks to those who do not have one. To make an online reservation, visit SeeWinter.com.

HELP CONSERVE BEACH BIRDS

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) reminds the public that it is waterbird nesting season, a critical time for Florida’s vulnerable wading bird, shorebird and seabird populations. People can help ensure the birds’ survival by respectfully sharing beaches and waterways.

Shorebirds and seabirds, such as snowy plovers and black skimmers, build shallow nests in the ground. The eggs and chicks are well-camouflaged, and can easily be missed and even stepped on. Wading birds, such as herons, egrets and pelicans, also are nesting now. These birds typically nest in mangroves and on tree islands around the state. When people come too close to the nests, it can cause the birds to abandon the nesting site, leaving eggs and chicks vulnerable. Boaters and beachgoers are asked to follow these guidelines: • Keep your distance from birds, on the beach and on the water. If birds become agitated or leave the nests, you are too close. Loud bird calls and dive-bombing are signals to back off. • Respect posted areas. Stay at least 300 feet from a posted nesting area, and avoid entering marked areas (for nesting birds) and use designated walkways. • Do not enter Critical Wildlife Areas, which are clearly marked with signs or buoys, to give wildlife the space needed for nesting, roosting and foraging. • Do not intentionally force birds to fly or run.Teach children to let shorebirds and seabirds rest instead of chasing them. • If your pets are with you, keep them leashed and avoid nesting areas at the beach.Always check the local rules. • Keep the beach clean and do not feed wildlife. Food scraps can attract predators, such as raccoons and crows that can prey on shorebird eggs and chicks. Litter on beaches can entangle birds and other wildlife. • Spread the word on the importance of giving shorebirds space. Report the disturbance of nesting birds to the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline at (888) 404-3922. For information on how to help shorebirds, visit MyFWC.com/shorebirds.

Sandra is a 2 1/2-year-old mixed breed with golden brown eyes. She can be unsure and somewhat withdrawn. Sandra’s ideal family would have a quiet, predictable home dedicated to showing her the ropes and brushing up on pet life skills at her pace. Sandra walks like a dream on lead, keeps her kennel clean and is even learning some tricks. She has a sweet, silly side that she shows with the people she is comfortable with. Sandra may enjoy the company of other laid-back pups of equal size, but slow introductions are the key to success when integrating a new canine family member. Sandra may do best without small dogs or cats.
