Hillsborough schools delay start

By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Hillsborough County School Board has delayed the reopening of schools, as recommended by Superintendent Addison Davis. In adopting Davis’ plan, the board also said it would reconvene in two weeks to look at the COVID-19 data, to see if the plan sticks, or if the board will change its plan. The board took the action in a special meeting on July 23.

Under the approved plan, teachers and district staff will return to schools as planned, on July 31. The board also approved a new student calendar and a new bell schedule, to ensure that students make up for lost time and have the required amount of time in their courses. Under the approved calendar, the first day of school is Aug. 24, the first semester ends on Jan. 15 and the last day of school is May 28. The board’s actions followed consider-

able public comment and discussion by board members. Members of the public urged board members to consider the safety of students and staff, in adopting their back-to-school plan. Board member Tamara Shamburger said, “this is not about parent choice. “This is about the greater duty of the superintendent and this board, to ensure safety in this school district. 2020 MLB season is here, and so are these locals

The 2020 MLB (Major League Baseball) season will be unlike any other it has experienced, thanks to COVID-19. The condensed 60-game schedule is believed to be the league’s shortest season since 1878. A handful of players (and a manager) with ties to The Laker/Lutz News coverage area look to take on prominent, even starring, roles with their respective MLB franchise this season. Above is Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash, who grew up in Lutz, and played at Northside Little League and Gaither High School. Take a closer look at more locals to watch in Sports, on page 16A.

Shoppers also can pick up made-to-order meals and grab-and-go foods, such as handcrafted gourmet sandwiches and freshly baked pizza. They also can select from a curated collection of wines and imported cheeses. Another feature: Shoppers can enjoy a cup of locally roasted coffee, wine and beer on tap, or other selections, which they can drink while shopping, or when relaxing at the bar. The Odessa store expects to have about 130 employees, Brous said. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Brous said,“our stores continue to be busy. “We ask our customers to shop as they normally would, but not to stockpile, so that their friends, family and neighbors have the same opportunity. The grocery industry is resilient, and we just needed to be patient and allow the industry an opportunity to recover. “We are seeing better conditions in most categories; however, paper and cleaning

Tiffany Ewell, the new principal at Steinbrenner High School, said she always knew she would face a learning curve when taking the leadership role at a school. However, she said, “my learning curve might be a little steeper than I ever imagined.” After all, in addition to assuming a new role, Ewell faces a school year filled with uncertainties because of COVID-19. “But, we’re all in the same boat,” Ewell said.“The challenges are there for everyone. We’re going to get through this and we’ll do it together.’’ The educator, who was promoted in June from her position as assistant principal for the International Baccalaureate program at Strawberry Crest High in Dover, has spent her summer preparing for the new school year. At a time when the incoming principal would normally be assessing her faculty lineup, meeting and greeting with parents, and getting to know the community, she’s forced to work at a social distance. She’s preparing Steinbrenner’s brick-and-mortar classrooms for the proper health precautions, while also devising strategies for eLearning students. “Some of the best advice a first-time principal can receive is the need to be patient and flexible … and that’s certainly true right now,’’ Ewell said.“Even though we’re in a historic and stressful time, I know I’m surrounded by so much support. Case of ‘brain-eating’ amoeba confirmed by officials By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

A confirmed case of Naegleria fowleri has been found in Hillsborough County. The amoeba can cause a rare infection of the brain and is generally fatal. The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater, such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals.

www.LakerLutzNews.com

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed one case of Naegleria fowleri in Hillsborough County. “The amoeba can cause a rare infection of the brain called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) that destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal. The amoeba is commonly found in warm freshwater, such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals,” according to a health department news release. “Naegleria fowleri usually infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nose,” according to information on the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control’s website. “You cannot get infected from swallowing water contaminated with Naegleria,” according to the CDC. “Infections usually occur when temperatures increase for prolonged periods of time, which results in higher water temperatures and lower water levels. The peak season for this amoeba is July, August and September,” the health department says. “Naegleria fowleri is found in many warm freshwater lakes, ponds and rivers in the United States, but is more common in southern states,” the health department adds. Because there is a low number of cases, it is difficult to know why a few people have been infected compared to the millions of other people who have used the same or similar waters across the country, the health department says. Though there are only 37 reported cases with exposure in Florida since 1962, the health department cautions those who swim and dive frequently in Florida’s lakes,

rivers and ponds during warm temperatures to be aware of the possible presence of Naegleria fowleri. To help prevent possible exposure, the health department recommends: • Avoid water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater, hot springs and thermally polluted water, such as water around power plants. • Avoid water-related activities in warm freshwater during periods of high water temperature and low water levels. • Hold the nose shut or use nose clips when taking part in water-related activities in bodies of warm freshwater, such as lakes, rivers, or hot springs. • Avoid digging in or stirring up the sediment while taking part in water-related activities in shallow, warm freshwater areas. • Please note, exposure to the amoeba may also occur when using neti pots to rinse your sinuses of cold/allergy-related congestion or conducting religious rituals with tap water. Use only boiled and cooled, distilled or sterile water for making sinus rinse solutions for neti pots or performing ritual ablutions. Symptoms of exposure include headache, fever, nausea, disorientation, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, loss of balance or hallucinations. If you experience any of these symptoms after swimming in any warm body of water, contact your health care provider immediately. It is essential to seek medical attention right away, as the disease progresses rapidly after the start of symptoms, the health department says. For the latest information about the amoeba, please visit the CDC’s website at CDC.gov/parasites/naegleria/general.html.

Wesley Chapel’s rec center on target for 2021 By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

It has taken years to get to this point, but by the summer of 2021, a new recreation center at Wesley Chapel District Park is expected to be up and running. A virtual groundbreaking was held, due to COVID-19. A group of elected leaders and county officials gathered at the district park on July 15 and tossed out a few ceremonial shovels of dirt. A video of the event was shared by the county’s Media Relations & Communications Team. In the video, Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore talks about the longterm impact he expects the project to have. “I spent years here with my children, in a number of sports. Now other children for years and years to come, and generations to come are going to be able to enjoy this indoor facility,” said Moore who coached flag football, baseball and soccer at the district park, when his three children were younger. Commissioner Ron Oakley thanked Moore for his involvement on the rec center project. Oakley added:“It’ll be great for this community.” Keith Wiley, the county’s director of parks, recreation and natural resources, said the district park is the county’s largest athletic facility, in terms of space. “So, this complex basically completes that package,”Wiley said. The bid on the project was awarded to Keator Construction LLC, for slightly under $4 million. Funding for the project primarily comes from park impact fees collected in the central zone of the county,Wiley said. “We are fortunate enough with the growth that was occurring in the central area to be able to accumulate enough money to make this project come to life. So, we’re extremely excited about that,”Wiley said. “We’re hoping that the building will be

completed and open in the summer of 2021, and we’ll kick off our first program and welcome our first guest at that time,” he added. The 17,800-square-foot facility will accommodate a number of sports and other activities, including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, summer day camp, toddler activities, community events and other uses,

according to plans previously shared with The Laker/Lutz News. The new facility will feature a gymnasium with a regulation-size basketball court that can be converted into two smaller courts, two volleyball courts or four pickleball courts. There will be restrooms and showers, too.

Connerton to get a downtown? By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Pasco County Commission has taken the first step in the process needed to clear the way for a proposed Downtown Connerton in Land O’ Lakes. Commissioners approved changes to the long-range plan that would set the stage for a new mixed-use community within Connerton, that would be on the west side of Ehren Cutoff, about 2 miles south of State Road 52. There are 16 parcels within Connerton Villages III/IV, according to county planning documents. No one objected to the proposed change to the county’s long-range plan, which commissioners approved unanimously. Now that the long-range plan has been amended, the next step will be consideration of a request to create a master-planned unit development (MPUD). The land currently is zoned for agricultural use, but would be used for a mixed-use development.

The rezoning calls for activating a mixeduse area of at least 40 acres to create a Downtown Connerton. Specifics in the proposal call for approximately 2,160 dwelling units, 55,000 square feet of retail, and 150,000 square feet of office, and a 765-student charter school, the planning documents say. The idea is to bring employment, retail, a school and higher-density residential together to make it easy for people to walk, bicycle or use forms of transportation other than vehicles. The area also will have pedestrian-oriented open spaces, community gathering spaces and will be within walking distance to an 80acre district park, planning documents say. Planners also report that the county has been working with the applicant to draft a connectivity plan that “will ultimately provide a system of trails, multi-use paths and associated amenities.” A request to rezone the land — to enable the development of the proposed Downtown Connerton — will be brought to the board for consideration, at a later date.

CORRECTION: Susan Sumner Shelton, is a longtime board member with The Florida Pioneer Museum. Her last name was misspelled in a story published in the July 22 edition of The Laker/Lutz News. CLARIFICATION: A Port St. Lucie-based company, Debbaudt Legacy Productions LLC, has licensed autism on-scene response cards since 2005, and has produced and circulated over 250,000 of these cards in the past 15 years. The Laker/Lutz News published a story in our July 22 edition about an autism assistance card program that was recently introduced at the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, through its Behavioral Health Intervention Team. The text on these autism response cards uses language very similar to the text published on the autism on-scene response cards produced by Debbaudt Legacy Productions. For more information about autism resources available through Debbaudt Legacy Productions, go to debbaudtlegacy.com and autismriskmanagement.com.

Multipurpose areas will accommodate a range of activities for groups, such as the Rotary Club, community associations, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Tom FitzSimons, president of the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association, said,“An indoor facility will allow us to get the kids off of the (outdoor) courts and inside to play basketball in our program, and allow us to offer wrestling and volleyball, and possibly competitive cheerleading, where they’d be inside and they could do the practicing.” “I can’t wait to see this thing built,” FitzSimons said. The recreational center gives people another reason to take advantage of the popular district park. It already is packed with outdoor sports activities, including several athletic fields for youth and adults, a lighted soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, and picnic tables and grills for barbecues. It also is home to the county’s only universal playground — designed specifically for children with disabilities.

Pasco adopts tighter restrictions on apartments By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakelutznews.com

The Pasco County Commission has adopted new standards that aim to keep apartment development from consuming frontage along state roads 54/56, between Gunn Highway and U.S. 301. Commission Chairman Mike Moore has championed tighter restrictions along the State Road 54/56 corridor — citing the need to preserve the frontage for employment-generating development. He also has cautioned his colleagues that allowing too much apartment development now could create problems in the future, when occupancy drops and the buildings fall into disrepair. Commissioners initially adopted the tighter restrictions on June 30, but revisited the issue on July 14 to clarify the effective date and to address a question raised about which section of State Road 54 falls within the new restrictions. Under the adopted changes, new multifamily residential zoning and future land use amendments along the SR 54/56 corridor from Gunn Highway to U.S. 301 shall be integrated with a mixture of employment-generating land uses. Those uses can be existing uses or new ones, according to the county’s new requirements. Also, on properties along the State Road 54/56 corridor from Gunn Highway to U.S. 301, the first 2,000 feet adjacent to the corridor shall place new multifamily zoning and future land use amendments behind non-residential land uses unless a develop-

ment vertically integrates a mixture of uses, such as a high-rise with offices, residential and retail uses. New rezonings or future land use amendments in the affected area that have not yet filed complete applications as of June 30 will comply with the county’s directive. The new restrictions do not apply to the section of State Road 54 that runs between Wesley Chapel Boulevard and Zephyrhills, Chairman Moore said. He said the directive has been clarified because questions had been raised about that. Before voting, commissioners also heard concerns raised by Joel Tew, an attorney who frequently represents applicants in rezoning and land use requests. Tew questioned the process being used by the board to make the changes, noting it bypassed the normal public hearing process to adopt changes to the county’s comprehensive plan and land development code. He also said the changes are in conflict with policies within the county’s comprehensive plan. But, David Goldstein, chief assistant county attorney, said “I am not aware of any direct inconsistencies with the comp plan or land development code, as part of this policy. However, if we identify any, we will address them through the appropriate land development code or comprehensive plan amendment.” Moore also noted that no Pasco County property owners stepped forward during public comment to raise objections to the new restrictions.

Local governments forge generator agreement The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The Pasco County School Board and Pasco County have approved an agreement that allows the county to use the school district’s fueling facilities during emergency situations. In exchange, the county will cover the cost of installing new generators or retrofitting existing ones to ensure that the fuel facilities will continue to operate even when the power is out. The agreement covers these facilities, in priority order: • Central Compound, 5346 Parkway Blvd., Land O’ Lakes

• Southeast Compound, 37820 13th Ave., Zephyrhills • Maintenance Compound, 11835 Tree Breeze Drive, New Port Richey • Northwest Compound, 14500 Cobra Way, Hudson • East Compound, 13135 Fort King Highway, Dade City Additional district fueling locations may be added to the program without amending the agreement, if both parties agree. The county has allocated an initial $200,000 for the work, but if the cost exceeds that amount, the parties shall negotiate any needed changes.

Keep Your Family Cool & Safe Cornerstone Pros Is Your One-Stop Source For A New A/C & Generator

Y

our family is likely spending more time than ever at home these days, and it may be smart to update you’re A/C system and install a home generator. “The only thing worse than having you’re A/C go out on the hottest day of the year, is it going out during a hurricane, and not coming back on when your power is restored,” said Dana Spears, president and owner of Cornerstone Pros in Land O’ Lakes. “It is always best to plan ahead before an emergency strikes.” Many families decide to upgrade their A/C system because their existing unit is unreliable, or costs too much to maintain, Spears explains. A new A/C system that Cornerstone Pros offers exclusively in this area is the Daikin Fit series. Available only since February, it features exceptionally cool comfort, a small footprint and high energy efficiency ratings. “The Daikin Fit has many advantages that families value,” said Spears. “Here are the top three that our customers rave about.” Half The Size — The outdoor unit is half the size of a traditional condenser, which makes it perfect for pool and patio areas. Exceptionally Quiet — It is quiet great for sleeping because you don’t hear a compressor kicking on and off during the night. Energy Efficient — It has an energy efficiency rating of 16 SEER that lowers your power bill. The Daikin Fit series also has the tech conveniences people want, in-

cluding Wi-Fi connectivity and thermostat controls that are accessible from a phone, pad and laptop. Plus, Cornerstone offers great financing terms and rebates, and works with local utility companies to qualify customers for additional rebates. Finally, the Daikin Fit has one of the best warranties in the industry, with a 12-year Generac generators run on natural gas parts and labor warranty included in or liquid propane, and automatically activate when there is a power outage. the price of the unit.

HOME GENERATORS

Many families install a home generator to keep their family comfortable and safe in case the power goes out during a summer storm or hurricane. “Families of all sizes and incomes are installing home generators, especially when a family member has medical issues that require treatments needing power,” said Miguel Silva, plumbing manager for Cornerstone Pros. Cornerstone installs Generac gen-

erators, the country’s largest manufacturer of backup generators, which automatically activate when there is a power outage. “Choosing the right size generator for your home is just as important as the quality of the generator. Our technicians do a full load calculation on every home we quote, and specify a generator that best meets a family’s needs and budget,” said Silva. Cornerstone Pros offers permanent and portable generators, and has low-

interest financing available to make monthly payments affordable. “We want to encourage everyone who wants to protect their family’s health, comfort and safety to give us call,” said Silva. “We do everything possible to make a generator fit their budget.” Modern generators are compact, quiet and able to power some or all of a home’s electrical appliances. A generator prevents almost all of the problems associated with power loss, including spoiled food, extreme temperatures, sickening mold, and no running water if a home is on a well. For homes with natural gas, Cornerstone Pros technicians do the plumbing that ties the generator directly into the home’s natural gas line, so the homeowner never has to worry about filling a gas tank. Homes without natural gas require a propane tank, which Cornerstone Pros connects to during its installation. “Generators provide protection 24/7, whether you’re home or away, and turn themselves off when utility power returns, so there is no need to monitor the unit during an outage,” said Silva. “Plus, most models today offer Wi-Fi connectivity, so no matter where you are, you can monitor the status of your power and generator’s operations from a smartphone, tablet or computer.” Cornerstone Pros offers 24-hour heating and cooling assistance. Its phones are answered 24/7, and technicians are available weekends and holidays. Call (813) 990-0561 anytime, day or night. For more information, visit the website at CornerstonePros.com.

Abstract Artist Cindi Vinci Exhibits at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel

I

f you’re looking for something free to do that is interesting, artistic and safe in these days of social distancing, stop by and see the latest artist show at the Welcome Center at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel. Artist Cindi Sherman Vinci is exhibiting over 20 paintings of her colorful, graphically intriguing paintings at the show sponsored by the Pasco Fine Arts Council and hosted by the developer of this master-planned community on State Road 54, located about three miles east of I-75. Vinci paintings ask the question, “Do artists create reality as they see it, or does reality show the artist what to create?” “As far back as I can remember, I have always interpreted the world in an abstract manner — I knew nothing I saw and heard was all there was to the story,” Vinci writes on her website. “For me, the world is a jumble of thoughts and ideas that run amok.” She goes on to explain that her art reflects her idea of life and all of its jumbled aspects. “My work reflects what I feel about life and all the changes that have occurred in my life. All my pieces tell my story,” she writes. Vinci has been fascinated with abstract art since she was 6 years old. Born in 1953 in a stereotypical Italian family, her father also was an artist and taught her as a child. Vinci later studied interior and architectural design at Parsons School of Design in New York City, and also studied studio art and art history at State University of New York in Purchase, New York. Vinci’s show, which runs through Aug.22, is the result of a partnership that Avalon Park Wesley Chapel began with the Pasco Fine Arts Council over a year ago. “Our goal was to bring art and cultural Railroad events, exhibits and educational classes to East Pasco County,” explains Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of the Avalon Park Group. “In our first year, this partnership has led to the dis-

covery of local artists, introduced art workshops to the community and given member artists the opportunity to feature their work in a new

venue. We couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome!” “One of the main goals of this partnership was to introduce people to local artists with monthly exhibits and demonstrations,” said Lerret. “This partnership has allowed us to expand the arts not only to our residents, but also to the entire east side of the county.” “It has been an overwhelming positive experience as well for the Pasco Fine Arts Council to expand its presence in East Pasco, thanks to the vision and generosity of the Avalon Park Group,” said Jo Baughman, director of the Council. Avalon Park West to work together accomplishes a long-held dream. “This partnership has been a tremendous asset to the artist community and our patrons, and has greatly expanded our ability to bring arts to all of Pasco County,” said Baughman. It is the vision of Avalon Park Wesley Chapel for its planned downtown to be the cultural and event center of East Pasco County. The downtown’s first phase will include a dedicated Arts Gallery that will become the permanent East Pasco home for the Pasco Fine Arts Council.

Avex Homes Introduces New Model Home At Avalon Park Wesley Chapel

A

beautiful new model home by Avex Homes is welcoming buyers at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, one of the most in-demand, master-planned developments in this high profile central Pasco community. The new Clayton model, which has been open for less than a month, is one of the builder’s most popular plans because its spacious floor plan is perfect for families of all kinds. “This is my favorite floor plan because they were brilliant in how they did the layout — it’s very open, but at the same time, everything is very nicely tucked away, which makes it feel much larger than its 2,000 square feet,” said Carlie Meadows, a sales associate for Avex Homes. Meadows explains that every home built by Avex Home comes standard with granite countertops, 42-inch kitchen cabinets and ceiling heights of 9 feet, 4 inches on both the first and second floors. The home opens into its dining room, which shows off the open floor plan that flows into the great room and kitchen. The master bedroom suite is on the first floor — a very popular feature that is attractive to families with children, and emptynesters. A huge walk-in closet is located through the master bath. “I love having the walk-in closet in the back of the bathroom, because when you’re getting ready in the morning, you don’t want to wake up your spouse,” said Meadows. The two additional bedrooms upstairs are quite large, at 14.4 feet by 11.2 feet, and each has a large walkin closet. A full bath is located between the two bedrooms. The new sales center also is close to new townhomes being sold by Avex Homes. Several townhomes have already been sold, and five in-

ventory townhomes are available, including the Bellevue model home. The maintenance-free townhomes all feature two-car garages in the rear, with alley access. Three floor plans are available, ranging from 1,608 square feet to 1,834 square feet, with three bedrooms and two-anda-half baths. Each townhome has a front porch, covered lanai or private breezeway that connects to the garage. The townhome lifestyle is especially popular with young families buying their first home, and emptynesters wanting to downsize. Townhomes begin in the low $230s. “Our townhomes are beautifully designed with upscale custom finishes, and are a tremendous value for the Wesley Chapel area,” said Cheryl Gonzalez, sales representative for Avex Homes. For families wanting to select their single-family floor plan, finishes and

colors, Avex offers eight plans in its traditional single-family home options, ranging from 1,585 square feet to 2,856 square feet, built as one- or two-story homes. Each home features a classic design with rich architectural detail and a traditional focus on the front porch. Homes start in the mid-$200s and are available on a variety of lots, including conservation and water views. If building from scratch, Avex allows its homebuyers to upgrade home finishes to their individual lifestyle and design preferences — from moving electrical outlets, to upgrading cabinets and flooring, to choosing colors that best show off their individual taste.

AMENITIES AND DOWNTOWN

Few communities offer the recreational activities found at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, thoughtfully created for residents of all ages. New

in 2019 was an expansive second amenity center with a zero-entry pool, splash pad, spa and picnic area. Avalon Park families also enjoy a wide array of other amenities, including another swimming pool, tot lot, basketball courts, pocket parks with mini-libraries, dog park, and trails and walkways that will interconnect with its planned downtown. Avalon Park Wesley Chapel soon will offer residents places to shop and work when its downtown center is completed. Infrastructure construction has begun on the first phase, which will include two office buildings, two mixed-use retail/residential buildings and a community park. “We will be building beautiful, multi-story buildings with commercial space designed for businesses our residents want close to home — restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, bars and entertainment, hair and nail salons, as well as activities like dance, gymnastic and karate studios,” said Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of the Avalon Park Group. In addition to shops and markets, the community’s downtown area will have over 500,000 square feet of commercial space. “We are not just developers— we are building a brand new town with family events all year-long,” said Lerret. “We’re bringing together everything a family needs to enjoy life today, and in the future.” Already, 1,500 people call Avalon Park Wesley Chapel home, and over 750 homes have been sold since it opened in 2012. The community will continue to grow over the next several years and, at build out, will be home to 10,000 residents residing in 4,400 single and multifamily homes.

Our Residents Love Living At Club Wildwood

A

dults age 55-plus are discovering Club Wildwood in Hudson as an ideal community to call home because of its beautiful manufactured homes, first-class amenities (including an 85,000-gallon pool with relaxing waterfall), and an enviable location just minutes from the beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. At 478 homes, Club Wildwood is the largest retirement community in north Pasco County. With so many residents, there is always something to enjoy, from water aerobics in its Olympic-size swimming pool, to twice-a-week bingo and weekly happy hours. Residents are friendly and welcome newcomers to all activities and clubs. This exceptionally maintained park has re-sale homes priced from $20,000 to $85,000. New homes also are available for sale or lease, and begin in the low $90s. All homes are double-wide, and offer two or three bedrooms, two baths and an attached carport and storage area. Most existing homes have been updated with the latest design styles, and are a tremendous value for a single-family home in terms of cost, amenities and location. Many of the community’s newest residents are moving from central and east Pasco, because living at Club Wildwood often costs less than renting an apartment, and its location on U.S. 19 makes it easy to get to work, shop and enjoy area attractions. The community’s monthly lot rental fee is less than $700, and in-

cludes city water, trash, sewer, landscaping and full use of all recreation facilities. In addition to its exceptionally large pool and deck, Club Wildwood has a picnic area, shuffleboard courts, a bocce ball court and horseshoe pits. There's even a dog run area for pets and a large catchand-release fishing lake for anglers. The community’s spacious clubhouse includes a small library, pool tables, fitness room and card tables. Regular activities including bingo, karaoke, potluck dinners, coffee hours, dart tournaments, happy hours, pancake breakfasts, line dancing, and bridge games. During the social distancing requirements of COVID-19, some of these activities have been suspended, but all will be back when it is safe to gather together again. Outside of the park, many Club Wildwood residents participate in special interest clubs, including bowling and golf leagues, the Red Hat Society and volunteering at nearby Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. The 290-bed hospital, which is less than 10 minutes from Club Wildwood, is the only Level II Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center in Pasco County, and its renowned Heart Institute provides comprehensive cardiac care and an open heart surgery program. CATHOLIC SCHOOL MOVES START DATE

PASCO SCHOOLS DELAYS OPENING Pasco County Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning recommended a two-week delay to the start of the 2020-2021 school year, with students returning to school on Aug. 24. Teachers would return to work on Aug. 17. The recommendation, made at a regularly scheduled virtual meeting of the school board, was unanimously approved after discussion. The proposed delay was prompted after the district received hundreds of emails and phone calls on the topic, and after Browning and his staff worked on a plan to make the necessary adjustments to the school year calendar. Browning made it clear that the school district still plans to open the schools for inperson, on-campus learning, as well as two online options. The two-week delay will afford the schools a greater opportunity to prepare for the return of staff and students. The superintendent also presented his recommendation that would require masks or face coverings for all students, teachers, staff and visitors on school campuses or district buildings. The mask mandate was scheduled to be voted upon at the July 28 school board meeting. The proposed rule describes what qualifies as a mask or face covering and under what circumstances the mask can be removed. It also describes how the school district will make accommodations for students or staff members who have a medical

St. Anthony Catholic School in San Antonio has moved its 2020-2021 school start date to Aug. 24, a decision made in light of the current rise in COVID-19 cases for the safety and well-being of its students, staff and families. The school, which was founded in 1884, is a private K-8 school dedicated to providing a quality and Christ-centered education that addresses the needs of the whole child: spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical. St. Anthony is offering families two options for the opening of school this year: traditional learning where students return to the classroom following the established safety guidelines, or remote learning, where students will follow the bell schedule of their peers in the classroom through live lessons and real-time assistance from their teachers. For information or to schedule a school tour, visit StAnthonySchoolFl.org, or call (352) 588-3041.

EDUCATOR PASSPORT PROGRAM Pasco County Schools has added seven businesses to its Educator Passport Program, a list of businesses that offer discounts or freebies if you are a Pasco educator. Educators simply need to present their ID badge and mention the ad when visiting or calling on a participating business. Each offer is valid for a specific period of time, as indicated on the passport listing. The next Pasco Passport Committee meeting is scheduled for Aug. 10, after which new offers will be posted to the site.

The entire list of businesses can be seen at Pasco.k12.fl.us/comm/passport_listings.

CHILD CARE SERVICES AT PHSC Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) has worked with TodayCare Children’s Center, at the West Campus in New Port Richey, to determine an appropriate time to reopen the center to ensure the safety of the children, parents and staff. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TodayCare Children’s Center closed on March 24. The current contract for TodayCare expires on July 30, which required the college to issue a request for proposal to solicit competitive bids for the child care service. The college administration on July 21 was due to present to the College District Board of Trustees a recommendation to offer a contract to Great Hope Preschool to assume the child care operations at the New Port Richey campus. Great Hope is being recommended for its services and programs provided, its community engagement, and the opportunities to utilize the center near the PHSC Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel. TodayCare will not be reopening the day care at this time, but PHSC will work with TodayCare and Great Hope to provide a transition timeline with the intent to begin a phased opening of the center in mid-August, depending on the COVID-19 status.

Services provided by Great Hope will remain the same, serving the same current age groups. Teachers previously employed by TodayCare are encouraged to apply for positions with Great Hope Preschool posted on the Indeed website.

Aldi just opened a new location in Lutz, at the edge of the Cypress Creek Town Center. The store is part of the company’s expansion efforts. It aspires to be the third-largest grocer in the nation, by store B.C. MANION count, by 2022.

GROCERY, from page 1A products have been slower to rebound. For this very reason, customers may see limits in place. In addition, limits will vary by store depending on high demand for certain items,” she said. GreenWise Market is owned and operated by Publix Super Markets Inc., a privately owned company. Publix is one of the 10 largest-volume supermarket chains in the country. Aldi also opened a new store in Pasco market, at 2215 Sun Vista Drive in Lutz, near a broad array of shops, restaurants and stores at Cypress Creek Town Center. Matt Thon, the Haines City Aldi division vice president, said the grocer considered a variety of factors when choosing a store location. “We want the best sites that are closest to our shoppers and can support a high daily traffic volume,”Thon said, via email. “As the demand for Aldi grows, so do our real estate options. Bottom line, we want to be conveniently located for our shoppers,” Thon added. He noted that Aldi’s “priority focus is saving people money on the food and products they want most.” He said the store achieves that by “offering shoppers a curated selection of Aldi-exclusive brands. “More than 90% of our store consists of Aldi-exclusive products,” he said. He also noted that “when it comes to value, Aldi won’t be beat on price. For the past decade,Aldi has held the esteemed title of Value Leader among U.S. grocery stores by Market Force Information.” Thon also said that each of Aldi’s stores, including the one in Lutz, employs 15 to 20 people.

SCHOOLS, from page 1A “Until we can guarantee student safety, there is no viable choice for brick-and-mortar,” Shamburger said. But, board member Cindy Stuart said the district was obligated to get a plan in front of Tallahassee. “Let’s talk about a two-week period, where we continue to watch what is happening,” she said. “We may have to pivot one way or another,” she said. Hillsborough County isn’t the only school district struggling with the challenges of reopening schools in the midst of a pandemic. Pasco County Schools also has delayed the start of school until Aug. 24. The Pasco School Board also approved an Aug. 17 start date for employees, also a twoweek delay from the originally planned Aug. 3. Delaying the start date will require the district to make up for lost time, Superintendent Kurt Browning said. His staff has developed a plan that adds 18 to 20 instructional minutes to each school day to make up for the lost time, and

During COVID-19,Aldi has been focusing its efforts on ensuring essential food and household goods are available,Thon said. The new location is part of Aldi’s national expansion, according to a company news release. The grocery chain has nearly 2,000 stores across 36 states and aspires to become the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer, by store count, by the end of 2022, the release says. Aldi offers its own line of gluten-free products, antibiotic-free meats and organic products, including bananas, tomatoes, avocados, apples and salad mixes, and organic milk, almond butter and salsa, among other things, the company reports. Aldi also has integrated several new safety features in all its stores across the country, to ensure the health and safety of customers and employees. also calls for foregoing early release days during the fall semester. Don Peace, president of United School Employees of Pasco, called Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran’s directive “an overreach. “You, as a board, should be the ones that determine the safest way to return to teaching and learning, but your authority was usurped by one man,” Peace said. Corcoran’s directive is being challenged, Peace added. “Yesterday, in a court in Miami, the Florida Education Association filed suit against his (Corcoran’s) order, labeling it ‘arbitrary and capricious.’They further claimed that returning to brick-and-mortar now, with COVID numbers on the rise, would be unsafe for students and employees,” Peace said. The union president also noted that a USEP survey of district employees found that “over 75% of those replying felt that the only safe way to return now is distance learning.” Peace said USEP is urging the Pasco County Schools to adopt a distance-learning model, until the rate of positive COVID-19 cases has been on the decline for 14 days.

PRINCIPAL, from page 1A want the same thing and that’s to see our students be successful. “Regardless of COVID-19, there are a lot of changes in the county with a new superintendent (Addison Davis). There’s a great feeling of camaraderie among all the principals. Staff and parents have been super supportive. Steinbrenner has been a great school for a long time. I’m relying on the support systems available to me and know things don’t have to be reinvented. I’m here to help and, at times, put my own direction on it. I’m very excited to be here.’’ Ewell replaces Kelly King, who was assigned to Hillsborough High after seven years as Steinbrenner’s principal. Ironically, Ewell and King once worked side by side as social studies instructors when their teaching careers began at King High School. They went together from King to Freedom, following principal Richard Bartels, who told them both,“I’m going to make principals of you one day.’’ “Mr. Bartels was right … it actually happened,’’ King said. “Certainly, it defies the odds that two social studies teachers and next-door classroom neighbors just starting out would become principals. “Even long ago, we talked about it all the time.We went through all the leadership development courses and programs. We had the same kind of goals. We were just two peas in a pod. I’m thrilled that Tiffany has gotten this opportunity, and I couldn’t think of a better person for the Steinbrenner position.’’ As they shifted into administration, King and Ewell worked a parallel path, sometimes applying for the same jobs, even driving together to attend back-to-back interviews. “I can always pick up the phone and ask Kelly a question, so our friendship and her experience at Steinbrenner are a great asset,’’ said Ewell, who had worked at Strawberry Crest since the East Hillsborough County school opened in 2009. King said the Steinbrenner community won’t notice much of a difference because “Tiffany and I are really similar in so many ways.’’ Indeed, they are close friends and confidants. They have even taken vacations together. “Tiffany’s leadership style will be a great fit at Steinbrenner,’’ King said.“She was a very strong teacher and she has the IB experience, so she knows the importance of college readiness. I think she will continue the success of the academic and extracurricular programs. “This is a unique time with unique challenges, but it’s still the best job in the world. As a principal, there are stressful times, but you remain focused on the big picture. You

do what’s right for the students. You hear from all the people who have a stake in it, then make decisions, always keeping the students first and foremost. Through it all, you’ve got to have some fun, too.The job can wear you out, but it’s also so fun and so rewarding. Tiffany will have the perfect priorities for success,” King said. In assuming the school’s top job, Ewell becomes just the third principal in Steinbrenner’s history, replacing King, who had replaced Brenda Grasso, the school’s first principal. Ewell is a graduate of King High School. She originally attended the University of Florida (UF) with designs on becoming a broadcast journalist. In high school, she even conducted an interview with Fox-13 news anchor Kelly Ring, while dreaming of one day filling a similar role in her hometown. Back then, some King teachers insisted that Ewell would ultimately migrate into education. “I’m not going to be a teacher, I’m a journalist,’’ Ewell protested. But, at UF, she visualized a gypsy lifestyle in broadcasting, hopping from town to town while climbing the career ladder, and that didn’t seem appealing. She transferred to the University of South Florida, where she shifted to education. Ewell hasn’t regretted the move. She loves to travel. She’s a doting aunt to her nephews, Drew and Zach Ehrhard, both high-level baseball players. She’s passionate about all things Tampa Bay. But, her biggest passion is education. And now, that passion is centered on Steinbrenner. “Obviously, there are a lot of unknowns right now. “But, we’re going to build relationships and make it work.Things have worked well at Steinbrenner for a long time. I’m here to lend support and keep things moving in a good direction,” Ewell said.

Check out these locals during 2020 MLB season By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

T

he 2020 MLB (Major League Baseball) season will be unlike any other it has experienced, thanks to COVID-19. The condensed 60-game schedule is believed to be the league’s shortest season since 1878. Fans will have to watch the games on TV, online, or listen to the radio — as stadiums will be off-limits to them, at least initially. There also will be myriad other social distancing and health and safety protocols, and some new rules — such as the universal DH (designated hitter) and extra innings beginning with a runner on second base. The season kicked off on July 23, four months later than expected, after MLB elected to postpone play in early March because of the pandemic. Though later than anticipated, and with far fewer games than expected, baseball fans will get a chance to watch their favorite teams and players battle for a postseason spot and World Series crown. Meanwhile, a handful of players (and a manager) with ties to The Laker/Lutz News coverage area look to take on prominent, even starring, roles with their respective MLB franchise this season. Here’s a closer look at some of the locals to watch.

Seattle Mariners left-handed pitcher Austin Adams, a Zephyrhills High School product.

AUSTIN ADAMS,

SEATTLE MARINERS, PITCHER Local tie: Zephyrhills High School Fully recovered from offseason knee surgery, the 29-year-old right-hander is expected to make a sizable impact for the Mariners bullpen, sliding into the team’s late-inning pitching or even as a closer. Since being traded to Seattle from the Washington Nationals last May, Adams registered a 3.77 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched across 29 games. The breakout 2019 campaign was cut short after a stomach-churning moment where he suffered a torn ACL and meniscus. It happened while trying to avoid a near-collision fielding a play at first base in a late September game against the Baltimore Orioles. Adams grew up in Zephyrhills, playing little league at Sam Pasco Park. He went on to

earn four letters in baseball (and one in basketball) at Zephyrhills High School from 2006 to 2009. He posted a 2.43 ERA and 80 strikeouts in his Bulldog career. Adams’ high school success led to a baseball scholarship at the University of South Florida, a program that had its first Big East Championship final in 2012, during his junior year. Adams signed with the Los Angeles Angels later that year after being selected in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB Draft. His road to the big leagues was a lengthy one, having thrown more than 250 innings across five minor league seasons before making his MLB debut in 2017 with the Nationals (from where he was traded to by Los Angeles in late 2016). Also, Adams joins a respective list of former MLB players from the Zephyrhills area, joining Dave Eiland (1988-2000) and Domonic Brown (2010-2015).

MIAMI MARLINS, OUTFIELDER Local tie: New Tampa resident/business owner

Through born and raised in Brandon, the 12-year MLB veteran has since made New Tampa home, living in the Hunter’s Green area and recently opening an F45 Training fitness center chain at The Walk at Highwoods Preserve neighborhood shopping center. The left-handed hitting corner outfielder is the quintessential journeyman, having played for seven different MLB franchises, his longest tenure coming with the Tampa Bay Rays from 2009-2014. He’s mainly played a platoon role throughout his career, almost exclusively getting action against right-handed pitchers. In recent years, he’s taken on a lesser role, as a spot starter and pinch-hitter. The 35-year-old Joyce begins the 2020 season on the 10-day injured list, due to an undisclosed condition and having not participated in the team’s July Summer Camp activities. In more than 1,300 MLB games played, Joyce has accumulated 145 career home runs and 482 RBIs, along with a .243/.343/.432 slash line.

Cleveland Indians outfielder Oscar Mercado graduated from Gaither High School in 2013.

OSCAR MERCADO,

CLEVELAND INDIANS, OUTFIELDER Local tie: Gaither High School

The 25-year-old Mercado is penciled in as the Indians starting centerfielder. That follows a showy 2019 rookie season where he batted .269 with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs in 119 games, adding 70 runs scored, 25 doubles, three triples and 15 stolen bases. A native of Columbia, Mercado and his family emigrated to the United States and settled in the Tampa area when he was 7 years old. He became a four-year starter at shortstop at Gaither High School from 2010 to 2013, leading the program to back-to-back district crowns. As a Cowboy, Mercado was something of a prep prodigy. He was named ESPN’s No. 1 middle infielder in the nation and dotted multiple high school All-American lists — Under Armour All-American, MaxPreps Underclass All-American and Perfect Game All-American Classic and Underclass AllAmerican. In addition to his skills on the diamond, Mercado had a 5.0 weighted GPA at Gaither and originally planned to attend Florida State University on a baseball scholarship. That all changed when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2013 MLB, electing to sign with the club for a $1.5 million signing bonus. Mercado spent nearly six years working through the Cardinals minor league system until he was traded to the Indians in July 2018. He made his MLB debut on May 14, 2019, against the Chicago White Sox. Also noteworthy, Mercado became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.

Entering his fifth big-league season, the 28-year-old right-handed pitcher is projected to slot in as the Cardinals’ setup man or late-inning option, after a strong 2019 campaign where he won 11 games and posted a 3.66 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 60 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched. Gant is known for having one of the most unique windups in baseball, whereby he takes a couple left-footed toe taps, then pauses before firing off a pitch. He’s also regarded for sporting a five-pitch repertoire, including a changeup nicknamed “The Vulcan” — gripping the ball between the middle and ring fingers, garnering its name from the Vulcan salute used by Spock in the Star Trek series. Gant moved to Wesley Chapel when he was 11, from Savannah, Georgia. He wound up starring on the Wiregrass Ranch High varsity baseball team from 2008 to 2011 — striking out over 200 batters and suffering just three losses in four years. Gant wasn’t only involved with baseball, though. He was a member of the Wiregrass Ranch basketball and swimming teams, and

also served as scorekeeper for the girls basketball program, which was coached by his father, John Sr., then a science teacher at the school. Gant signed with the New York Mets out of high school after being selected in the 21st round of the 2011 MLB Draft. After four years in their minor league system, Gant was traded to the Atlanta Braves, where he made his MLB debut in 2016. He was traded offseason to the Cardinals, where he has been since. Gant has customarily spent parts of his baseball offseason training in and around Wesley Chapel.

KEVIN CASH,

Toronto Blue Jays. Reports out of Summer Camp indicate the 23-year-old Pearson is indeed ready for The Show, having refined breaking pitches to complement a fastball that regularly touches triple digits. Born and raised in Odessa, Pearson starred at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, helping the program to the Class 3A state semifinals as a senior in 2015. He wrapped up his prep career with a career 1.24 earned run average and 144 strikeouts in 101.2 innings pitched, with a 12-1 record. Pearson went on to play college baseball at Miami’s Florida International University, then transferred to the College of Central Florida in Ocala. There, he was named the Rawlings/Perfect Game JUCO Pitcher of the Year, and subsequently selected by the Blue Jays in the first round (28th overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft, signing with the team for a $2.45 million bonus. Pearson has proceeded to shine at each level of the minors, boasting a combined 2.19 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 119 strikeouts in 123.1 innings from rookie ball through Triple-A. The budding major leaguer spent a portion of the leaguewide shutdown in Tampa, training with other professional athletes at Yo Murphy Performance.

Before enjoying eight years as an MLB catcher and now manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, the 42-year-old Cash fine-tuned his baseball skills and acumen in Lutz, playing at Northside Little League and Gaither High School. He spent his younger days growing up in the Valley Ranch Drive neighborhood, situated across from Lake Park. Cash first hit the national scene in 1989 — then a 12-year-old second baseman for a Northside Little League team that reached the 43rd Little League World Series. Cash would go on to later play college baseball at Florida State University and earn spots with six different MLB franchises from 2002-2010 — including earning two World Series rings with the 2007 Red Sox and 2009 Yankees, respectively. Once his playing career concluded, Cash ventured into coaching and has been the Rays manager since 2015. He’s widely regarded as one of the game’s best for leading a Rays rebuilding effort that embraces outside-the-box strategies, such as platoons, shifts, and openers, combined with strong leadership skills in dealing with players. Baseball is undoubtedly in his blood, as his father and uncle both played professionally, the latter reaching the big leagues in the 1970s.

Pasco keeps growing, despite COVID-19 By Kathy Steele Special to The Laker/Lutz News

B

usiness in Pasco County is coming back to life as residents, weary of a pandemic-enforced lockdown, venture back to the world of shopping and dining. There are hopeful signs for commercial rebirth. Neon “open” signs are visible in storefronts. Banners planted at the roadside’s edge wave at passing motorists. Parking lots at malls and shopping centers are filling up again. But, it’s not just the established businesses that are reviving Pasco’s economy. Business owners and developers continue to invest in new retail especially along one of the county’s busiest east/west corridors – State Road 54 and State Road 56. On State Road 54, west of U.S. 41, The Preserve Marketplace and two retail centers at Starkey Ranch are adding shops, restaurants, health care services, and offices. At Bexley Ranch, in Land O’ Lakes, land is being cleared and leveled on Lot A for the Bexley South Office Park, off Bexley Village Drive, near Springhill Suites. A Crunch Fitness is scheduled to open Aug. 25 off State Road 54 in Trinity. Meanwhile, on the State Road 54/56 corridor east of U.S. 41, there are new developments, too. Near the juncture of State Road 56 and Interstate 75, a banner announces that Tidal Wave Auto Spa is coming to an outparcel at Tampa Premium Outlets. In the same general area, Main Event, a 50,000-square-foot entertainment venue, celebrated its grand opening less than two weeks ago. And, another Crunch Fitness is planning to open in October in the old Winn-Dixie location, off Collier Parkway and State Road 54, in Land O’ Lakes. The Collier Parkway location is a great choice for a fitness gym because it’s along a high traffic corridor, said Geoff Dyer, president of Crunch Fitness.“It’s in the heart of the (Land O’ Lakes) neighborhood,” he said. During the COVID-19 shutdown, work continued on the Trinity and Land O’ Lakes locations, Dyer said, adding,“for all intents and purposes, we haven’t seen any slow-down in our developments.” He noted that Crunch Fitness gyms shut down for about two months at the start of the pandemic, but now the gyms are open and adhering to safety guidelines of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “Membership has returned to about 95% of what it was pre-shutdown,” Dyer said. While activity, in general, appears to be picking up and new construction continues to kick up dirt — a cloud hovers over business decisions due to the uncertain nature of COVID-19. Ralph Santell and his family moved to Starkey Ranch and began plans to open Santelli Pizza & Pasta nearly three years ago. They saw the growth happening in Pasco. His storefront is at Starkey Ranch Town Square, a plaza located at State Road 54 and Gunn Highway.A few tenants in the center, including J. Joseph Salon, are open. Santell plans to open by September, possibly with outdoor dining and takeout. He said he’ll decide closer to opening whether he’ll initially offer indoor dining. “That (COVID-19) has been an extra challenge that influences things on a daily basis,” Santell said. “It’s been hard to navigate the whole COVID-19 situation. We take it one day at a time.” Santell also owns a restaurant in the Westchase subdivision in Hillsborough County. That restaurant closed, then reopened, but is now closed again — except for takeout. Another Starkey Ranch retail center at State Road 54 and Heart Pine Avenue – Starkey Ranch Business Park – also has a roster of tenants slated to open, including The Wicked Pour, Tropical Smoothie Café and Hungry Greek. The pandemic slowed opening plans, but construction on the retail park is nearly finished.

Crunch Fitness is planning to open a gym in October in the former Winn-Dixie grocery store, at State Road 54 and Collier Parkway. An employee manned a display outside the site to take membership applications. Another Crunch Fitness is opening Aug. 25, off State Road 54, in Trinity.

“All of these are coming along,” said Matt Call, project director for Starkey Ranch.“With COVID-19, things take a bit longer.” Additional outparcels at both retail centers are available for development — though it could take longer to get projects going, Call added. Typically, residential construction is a key to spurring on new retail, Call said. He said Starkey Ranch and Bexley by Newland are the top residential sellers in the Tampa Bay area.Together, they add about 800

residential units annually to Pasco, he said. Pasco also is on an apartment building spree with about nine complexes planned or under construction. Near the Tampa Premium Outlets and Cypress Creek Town Center, Brightwork Crossing apartment complex is attracting new renters to the commercial epicenter of the Wesley Chapel area. Two Altis apartment complexes, one by Wiregrass Ranch on State Road 56 and a second on South Branch Boulevard at Starkey Ranch, are adding to Pasco tenant population. Bainbridge Sunlake is an upscale apartment complex being built at State Road 54, and Mentmore Boulevard, next to the Shoppes at Sunlake Centre. A new standalone Starbucks is coming soon to the Sunlake shopping center, as well. Retail developments, including The Preserve Marketplace, are adding new tenants, including the recently opened anchor store – Greenwise. Majik Touch Cleaners is open, too. Other tenants with plans to open include Chipotle, Heartland Dental and CVS Pharmacy. “It’s going to be a cool little plaza when it’s done,” Call said.“I think Pasco is going to continue to grow. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

Jersey loves to please

Jersey is an 8-year-old golden chow mix. He will sit for his treats and food. Jersey is a great walker and loves to stroll around the community, and then lay in front of the garage when he gets back, to relax. His favorite thing is to go for a ride in the car with his head out the window. Jersey was rescued from the kennel and he is the best fur baby ever, according to Phyllis Ferretti and family, with whom Jersey lives, in Land O’ Lakes.

Anoles have many moods This green anole (Anolis Carolinensis) sat on an orchid leaf on the back porch of Bruce Jones’ home in Dade City. PET PAWS STONE CRAB REGULATIONS

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at its July meeting approved changes to recreational and commercial stone crab regulations, according to an FWC news release. Florida’s stone crab fishery has experienced a long-term decline in harvest and is likely undergoing overfishing. The FWC staff worked with stakeholders on changes that are intended to increase the stone crab population and build resiliency in the fishery. The approved changes that go into effect on Oct. 1 include: • Moving the season end date from May 15 to May 1; closed on May 2 • Requiring a 2 3/16-inch escape ring in all plastic and wood stone crab traps before the start of the 2023-2024 season • Increasing the minimum claw size limit by 1/8-inch, from 2 ¾-inches to 2 7/8inches • Limiting possession of whole stone crabs on the water to two checker boxes, each up to 3 feet by 3 feet, or a total volume of 24 cubic feet. Checker boxes are

used to hold crabs onboard a vessel before they are measured and legal-size claws are removed. For information on stone crab regulations, visit MyFWC.com/Marine.

MORE TURTLES RELEASED

The Florida Aquarium on July 13 released two endangered juvenile green sea turtles at Anastasia State Park. The turtles, Fredrick and Talbot, were returned to the sea following months of rehabilitation and care by The Florida Aquarium’s Animal Response Team, supported by Florida Blue. Talbot was found in the St. Augustine inlet, with a deep laceration on the back of his neck, and was missing a front flipper. Fredrick was found stranded in the Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville. He was mildly debilitated and had a plastron (shell bottom) fracture. The aquarium began administering treatment for their injuries and health issues. Both sea turtles recovered and after a little over two months of rehab, they were

ready to go back into the sea. The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center opened over a year ago. It has treated turtles with a variety of injuries, including infection, laceration, amputations, cold stunning and plastron fractures. It also has released 20 sea turtles since that opening.

PASCO EDC CANCELS ONE EVENT, CREATES ANOTHER

The Pasco Economic Development Council Inc. (PEDC), has canceled plans for its 34th Annual Awards and Trade Show, which had been set for Sept. 3 at Saddlebrook Resort. The organization decided a celebration at this time, when so many businesses have suffered greatly due to COVID-19, would be in poor taste, according to a news release. Instead, the organization will have a virtual event called Pasco 2020:A Story of Strength. It will highlight the resiliency and hard work of the community during the pandemic. The

San Antonio Citizens Federal Credit Union has announced that it has canceled its monthly Business Link events for 2020, because of limitations created by COVID-19. It hopes to begin the monthly sessions again in 2021.
