Pasco considers smoker hiring ban
By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com
It’s hard to argue the numbers against smoking: It’s caused 20.8 million deaths since 1965, it’s been linked to 12 kinds of cancer and 17 chronic diseases, and can create similar problems to anyone else exposed to the smoke, according to the U.S. Surgeon General. So for Pasco County, banning cigarette smoking is a no-brainer. However, preventing smokers from being hired by the county? That might be a little more problematic.
Yet Pasco is starting that push, although county performance development director Marc Bellas admits that he’s still not sure exactly how the new program will shake out. “Everyone in this organization knows this is coming, but what we don’t know is what it will look like, when will it happen, and how it will impact each one of them,” Bellas said. Governments have found some success — and failures — when it comes to implementing policies that would ban hir-
Running the Boston Marathon is on Trout’s ‘bucket list’ By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
When Trish Trout runs with thousands of racers at the 118th Boston Marathon in April, she’ll cross an item off her bucket list. “Boston is the crown jewel of running, and coming from a non-elite running status, it always seemed like it was a dream too far out of reach,” the 39-year-old mother of two said. The Wesley Chapel woman couldn’t picture qualifying and she knew the only other way would be to run for a charity, something she couldn’t quite foresee happening. But one of her co-workers encouraged her to see if she could run for a charity. He told her:“If you can get in, I will help you with fundraising.” So,Trout decided to try, and was acB.C. Public invited to celebrate opening of Porter Campus By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Pasco-Hernando State College is having a public celebration to mark the opening of the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel on April 2. The celebration will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the dedication ceremony at 5:30 p.m., in the Building B Conference Center. The Porter family of Wesley Chapel, which donated the land for the campus, will be honored during the dedication ceremony. The college also will recognize Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel for the establishment of an endowed scholarship for area residents. Guests will be able to tour the full-service library, Teaching-Learning Center and student development areas, as well as classrooms, science and nursing labs, and enjoy a variety of open house activities, including entertainment provided by local elementary and high school performance groups. “We invite the community to join us as we celebrate this exciting milestone for our college, and look forward to showcasing our new state-of-the-art campus facilities and all that we have to offer— from credit and noncredit courses to new programs,” Stan Giannet, provost of the campus, said in a release. The campus, at 2727 Mansfield Blvd., in Wesley Chapel, is set on 60 acres of land, just off State Road 56 and next to Wiregrass Ranch High School. The new campus opened its doors on Jan. 13 to more than 1,800 students enrolled See PORTER, page 14

DADE CITY: BLACK VS. HERRERA
When Scott Black first took his seat on the Dade City Commission, Iraq had not yet invaded Kuwait to ignite the first Gulf War, George Bush (the first one) was still president, and spending more than a dollar for a gallon of gas probably meant it was premium. A lot has changed in 24 years, and Angelica Herrera feels Black has not kept up. And that’s why she’s facing off against him next week. “Mr. Black has had his chance,” she said. “But after (more than) 20 years, he has lost touch with the voters.” That was most evident, Herrera said, when Black approved physically expanding a sewage plant into a neighboring athletic field in the Mickens-Harper neighborhood. “This was most insensitive and not necessary, since the city had other options,” she said. However, if Herrera wants any chance to beat Black, she not only faces a commissioner that has strong name recognition in Dade City, but she may need to overcome some of her eyebrow-raising actions, including walking out of a candidate debate last week. This, Black said, has hurt Herrera’s position, because she has not “presented anything of consideration relating to either experience or fresh perspective.” “She has not attended any city commission meetings or public events to make any effort to educate herself on the current is-

sues,” Black said of Herrera. Quoting the late Gov. Lawton Chiles, Black said elected officials can either “grow” or “swell” in their positions, and he chooses to grow. “It is very important to me that I enjoy and embrace the many challenges that come with the position, and continue to grow with it,” Black said.“As well, someone purporting to be only a fresh infusion of energy is usually not the best option, while a knowledgeable proven force is always bet-

Black spoke out against the move, saying a workshop was not the right forum to bring up such an issue unannounced. But his protests fell on deaf ears, and the move later prompted Class to resign. “The process of dividing the position of city clerk and finance director was flawed and misguided from the start,” Black said.“It was deceptively billed as ‘progress’ when there was no present need to make the personnel change in a smoothly running department — especially in the first month of the new tightly constrained budget yet.” Herrera, however, remembers all of it differently, and says Black has misrepresented what happened. “The fact is that numerous city commission meetings document that this matter was discussed publicly,” she said.“It did not just come up at the workshop for the first time as my opponent would like us to believe. It (really) has been overblown.” Black said his primary regret was not speaking out more loudly, and drawing residents into the conversation. “I wish that the community could have been more aware and alarmed, and willing to stand up and question this continued gradual abuse of power, and demand better of us,” Black said. Both Herrera and Black have combined to raise $6,500 in this race, more than any other municipal election in Pasco County this cycle. And it seems both may need every penny.

In St. Leo, a bill sits in a committee in Tallahassee that would remove part of the Lake Jovita community from St. Leo.Yet, that hasn’t stopped Raphael Davis from challenging longtime commissioner Donna DeWitt for her seat in the St. Leo government. While Davis talks almost exclusively about the plight of Lake Jovita residents in the town, he has nothing to say about the de-annexation itself, saying he doesn’t “comment on pending legislation or speculation.” “Since the beginning of the Lake Jovita community, a small portion has allegiance to

the Town of St. Leo,” Davis said.“These Lake Jovita residents have, up to this point, quietly gone along about their lives and paid town taxes knowing they were receiving little or no services in return.” Town taxes, Davis said, are out of line with what Pasco County charges to live in an unincorporated area, and have accumulated more than $1.2 million in cash and reserves because of it. “I believe a more business-type approach would benefit all of the residents, reduce the current tax burden on all of our residents, and still maintain the town on a sound financial basis,” Davis said. DeWitt, however, calls Davis’ candidacy just a continuation of the battle the town has had with some Lake Jovita residents since 2006.While she has heard complaints about taxes, she feels the bigger reasons have to do with Saint Leo University itself, a school that predates Lake Jovita by a century or so. “When we make decisions, we try to be a voice for everybody in the town, not just for Lake Jovita,” said DeWitt, a nun with nearby Holy Name Monastery, who was first elected to the commission in 1997. “They get upset when the university puts up a tree or a light. They knew what was there when they built the community.” Losing part of Lake Jovita won’t hurt St. Leo at all, DeWitt said, except create some changes on the commission itself when two members will be forced to resign. “St. Leo will be fine,” she said.“We did it 100 years without them, we’ll continue to do it without them.”

Youth ministry uses puppets to spread gospel message By B.C. Manion
Many of PfC’s members are siblings of former members or were invited by friends to give it a try. “My brother was in it, and I started watching it when I was in third grade,” said Cody Coates, 17, who was so eager to join he persuaded Bonanno to let him join in sixth grade. “It’s a blast,” said the Steinbrenner High School student said.“This is the only thing I’ll cancel my friends for. I’ve missed birthday parties. “I like that I can be a Christian while still having fun. You’re spreading God’s word,” Coates added. If the audience hasn’t heard of them, they’re in for a surprise, he said. “No one expects to see a fun, black-light puppet show,” Coates said. Emily Keleher, another PfC member, was surprised the first time she saw a show. “I thought it was going to be a little puppet show, and then I saw it,” the Martinez Middle School student said. She enjoys performing, but she thinks the best part of being involved is hanging out with other members of the group. Jerry Grimes, 13, who is new to the group this year, said he wanted to join after seeing a performance when he was young. “I would come to these puppet shows, and I was like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s really fun.’ Now, I’m doing it,” said the Walker Middle Magnet School student. He gets a kick out of watching children react. “It’s been very fun, just to see the smiles on kids.” As they run through their routines at practice, the kids are clearly enjoying themselves. They seem to have an easy rapport with Bonanno and Graves. As they talk about their upcoming tour, for instance, one kid tosses out an idea:“We could do a flash mob on the metro,” he said. It’s an idea, Bonanno said, that’s worth considering.

The music is cranked and the kids are clapping, jumping and gliding around in a second-floor room in the education building at Van Dyke Church in Lutz. They are waving flags, raving poi balls and making dance moves, as they practice a routine for a future performance. Browning has concerns about recommended state test By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Students across Florida will face a new standardized test next year to replace the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test 2.0. Florida Education Commissioner Pam Stewart has selected a replacement test, but not everyone is embracing it. “I don’t agree with the choice that she’s made,” Pasco County Schools superintendent Kurt Browning said. Florida has joined a host of other states in the pursuit of Common Core Standards — now known as the Florida Standards — which define what students should know as they proceed through school in order to graduate from high school fully prepared to enter college and the work force. Browning has been making the rounds for more than a year, talking to parents, teachers, administrators and civic groups about the importance of adopting the more rigorous standards, and also of the importance of being able to measure the district students’ progress
against students across the nation. The test Stewart has selected won’t allow those national comparisons, Browning said. With the FCAT, the district could compare itself to other Florida districts, but that’s where it stopped, Browning notes. “With this new assessment, we still can’t compare ourselves to other states,” he said. The superintendent said he’s also concerned that the field-testing for the new assessment is being done in Utah. “Utah is nothing like Florida,” Browning said.“In addition to that, we find out that it’s not the entire assessment that’s being fieldtested, but just questions that are being field-tested. “Right now, we’re just going in there saying, ‘Well, if it’s good enough for Utah, it’s good enough for Florida.’ I disagree with that.” Stewart selected the not-for-profit American Institutes for Research to provide the new English language arts and mathematics assessment. Browning noted the new assessment is not a done deal until it gains approval from
the state Board of Education. “The Legislature certainly has the opportunity to chime in on what assessment is used,” Browning said. And if state lawmakers do, Browning asks them to approve “an assessment that provides transparency, that truly measures student growth,” and that would allow for comparability with performance by students in other states. Pasco School Board member Cynthia Armstrong agrees with Browning’s objections. Armstrong is concerned the test doesn’t allow comparisons across the nation, and she also is worried about the field-testing being done in Utah, which is much less diverse than Florida. When Stewart announced her selection of the assessment, she posted prepared letters to teachers and parents. In the March 17 letter to teachers, the education commissioner noted she has heard repeatedly from teachers that they want “tests that provide a more authentic assessment of our students’ grasp of Florida Standards. “These assessments will do that,” Stewart
said,“because they will include more than multiple choice questions. Students will be asked to create graphs, interact with test content, and write and respond in different ways than on traditional tests.” The education commissioner also told teachers the “new question types will assess students’ higher-order thinking skills, which is in keeping with the higher expectations of the Florida Standards. In a March 17 letter to parents, Stewart explained the new Florida Standards, upon which the new test will be based. “As many of you know, your children will have new goals to meet with the adoption of the Florida Standards,” Stewart wrote. Simply put, these standards are the detailed expectations of what every child should be able to do at each grade level. “The new standards were developed with unprecedented input from Florida teachers, educators and the public,” Stewart wrote.“The emphasis with these standards is for your children to think critically and analytically and go beyond memorization.”

LGBT BILL GETS CORPORATE SUPPORT
More Florida businesses are throwing their support to a bipartisan bill that would ban anti-gay and gender-based discrimination. Other businesses already a part of the coalition include C1 Bank, Carlton Fields, CSX Corp., Darden Restaurants, Florida Blue,Wells Fargo and Home Shopping Network. Most of us know the feeling. We're on the telephone, and suddenly we lose the connection with the person we’re talking to. But imagine if you always had trouble hearing the person on the other end of the line. For people who are hard of hearing, talking on the telephone can be a tremendous challenge. Life can get easier, now, through some new telephones offered for free to people who have been certified with a hearing loss or have speech difficulties. They are being offered by Michael Sutter, an outreach specialist for Florida Telecommunications Relay Inc., a nonprofit distributor of specialized telecommunications equipment for people with hearing loss and speech difficulties. The cordless phones can amplify incoming sounds so that people receiving the call can hear the equivalent of someone talking to them from less than 5 feet away, Sutter said. The telephones are purchased with funds secured from taxes people and businesses pay for telephone lines intended to serve people with communications difficulties, Sutter said. The available telephone, the XLC2, was developed by Clarity, a division of Plantronics Inc. Features of the XLC2 include a talking caller ID, which announces the incoming caller, and a talking dial pad that reads the numbers as they are dialed. The large, easyto-read buttons also are backlit to help senior citizens who have low vision. The buttons on the handset are spaced apart to be easily accessible for those with dexterity issues or arthritis.

Free cordless telephones are available to Florida residents who have a documented hearing loss or speech difficulty. The phones can be obtained by filling out an application and visiting a Florida Telecommunications Relay Inc. office. An office can be found at Self Reliance for Independent Living, 8901 N. Armenia Ave. in Tampa.
To qualify for a telephone, the recipient must be a Florida resident and certified as having a speech loss or hearing difficulty. “Our target demographic is Boomer and up,” Sutter said, but recipients can be young or old, as long as they have documentation of their hearing or speech issues. A hearing aid specialist or audiologist typically provides the information, but there are other avenues that can be used as well to get the certification, Sutter said. For additional information, visit FTRI.org, or call (800) 222-3448.

Struggling with reverse mortgage? Relief is here The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
MICHAEL HINMAN/STAFF PHOTO
Life is becoming more and more difficult for tobacco users. Not only is space to light up becoming scarce, but jobs might be more difficult to find as well.
SMOKER, from page 1 carrot being dangled is healthier living. “What they’re looking for is kind of a more environmentally friendly and positive work place,” said county public information officer Doug Tobin.“That includes a smokefree campus, as well as a policy where new employees would be prohibited from smoking.” And the idea is not new in Pasco County. Both the fire department and sheriff’s office already restrict smoking among employees, Tobin said, and the county itself has flirted with the idea for several years now. A smoking policy for the county government is far from complete, Bellas said. However, he brought up some initial ideas to the Pasco County Commission last week to get some of their feedback. In its current form, employees hired after Oct. 1 would be required to sign an affidavit affirming they have not used tobacco products for one year, and agree to submit to a nicotine test if they’re every suspected of smoking. Those who were hired before Oct. 1 would no longer be allowed to use tobacco products while they are on the clock. New hires would not be allowed to smoke or use tobacco products at all, not even at home, or on the weekends. If they are discovered to have violated the policy, they could be disciplined and even fired.
PORTER, from page 1 in classes at what is now the fifth full-service PHSC campus. It offers courses in business administration, nursing, allied health, human services, information technology and other disciplines. The Porters also are being honored at a dinner being hosted by the Pasco-Hernando State College Foundation on April 12 beginning at 6 p.m. The second annual Bash at the Ranch will include a dinner prepared by a chef, live entertainment, wine and beer tastings, a silent auction, and a wine pull. The event
Yet, even Bellas admits that sometimes a plan looks far better on paper than it does in the field. And his goal is to not make it more difficult to compete for good employees with other counties and private industry by having too restrictive of a policy. “We have a few challenges that we can’t ignore,” he said.“Between 24 and 25 percent of our employees right now use tobacco, and a lot of them are in the entry-level positions in roads and bridges, and in utilities. The folks in those departments already have a hard enough time keeping those positions filled. If we take one more thing away, and they believe it’s going to be a problem, then that is not a good choice for us.” That means there’s still a lot of work to do on the policy before it’s completed, Bellas said, and there’s a good chance that what is finally approved to begin next October could be quite different from what’s on the table today. And the talk alone of implementing the policy seems to have had some positive effect already. Commissioner Henry Wilson, who serves on a committee addressing this issue, told commissioners at the recent meeting participation in smoking cessation programs has drastically increased over the past two months. “They know the conversation has started,”Wilson said.“This is nothing else but to create a healthy work environment, and that’s what we’ll try to do.”
will benefit the PHSC Foundation-sponsored endowed scholarships. Ted and Avis Phillips of the 4G+1 Ranch in Land O’ Lakes will host the event on their 5,000-acre cattle and horse ranch. The Musunuru family is the presenting sponsor. Dr. Rao Musunuru is a member and three-time former chair of PHSC’s district board of trustees. Admission is by advance purchase only. Half of the $150 ticket cost is a tax-deductible contribution, organizers said. Tables and tickets may be purchased by calling (727) 816-3410, or by visiting PHSC.edu/foundation/bash.

Elderly homeowners will have a little help with reverse mortgages through a new program through the Florida Housing Finance Corp. Called the Elderly Mortgage Assistance Program, or “Elmore,” this program is designed to assist homeowners with home equity conversion mortgages, better known as reverse mortgages, who are struggling making property tax and homeowners insurance payments. Because of that, these homeowners could face foreclosure for nonpayment of these required expenses. “There are thousands of reverse mortgages in Florida that are in delinquency,” said Steve Auger, executive director for Florida Housing, in a release.“After implementing other (‘Hardest-Hit Fund’) programs that target the more ‘traditional’ homeowner, it is now time to help homeowners who are in the twilight of their years, on a fixed income, experiencing a hardship, and facing foreclosure. This new program should help them sustain their homes, while they look at ways to free up income to pay their homeowner expenses moving forward.” The program is being conducted in cooperation with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, Fannie Mae, and the U.S.
MARATHON, from page 1 Trout said she’s hoping to exceed her pledge and raise at least $13,100 for DanaFarber, which is a cancer institute in Brookline, Mass. She picked that number because “13.1” signifies a half-marathon, the distance she normally runs. If she raises $13,100, she’ll shave her head in a show of solidarity with cancer patients who do not think they have anyone supporting them. Trout said her goal is to complete the marathon in no more than 5 hours and 30 minutes. Initially, she was shooting for 5 hours and 15 minutes, but she’s coming off a slight injury.
Department of the Treasury. Florida has been allotted $25 million to help distressed homeowners with the program. Reverse mortgages offer unique benefits to elderly homeowners, allowing them to access the equity in their homes. However, with a reverse mortgage, homeowners have specific responsibilities that are set by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, which insures most reverse mortgages, including the timely payment of property-related expenses. If the homeowner falls behind on those obligations, the servicer may issue a demand for payment-in-full of the reverse mortgage, or even foreclose on the property. The Elmore program is designed for those who demonstrate they will be able to reasonably recover from the hardship that contributed to the property-related expenses becoming delinquent. Florida homeowners with reverse mortgages who want to see if they qualify for the Elmore program should first contact their reverse mortgage servicer. If the servicer is unable to assist, the homeowner should then call the Elmore application and information line at (800) 601-3534. Additional information is available online at either FloridaElmore.org, or at KnowYourOptions.com/reverse. Trout’s familiar with the course because she drove it in November when she was in Boston for Thanksgiving. “I got goose bumps, and I started to cry when I stood at the starting line. I was in the moment,” she said. She’s anticipating a similar show of emotion on April 21, as she crosses the finish line. Regardless of the time she turns in,Trout said this experience already has taught her a few things about herself. “It reaffirms the fact that, when I make a decision, I’m going to do whatever it takes to stick to it,” she said. “And, I’m a lot stronger than I thought I was.” Anyone interested in donating can visit RunDFMC.org/2014/trish.

Lutz game company goes mobile with ‘Battle Gems’ By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
Adam Bohn isn’t big on traditional business attire, but his Lutz-based company, Artix Entertainment, is big on video games. Their latest offering, ‘Battle Gems,’ is their first on mobile platforms.
If you’re one of the millions of people who play video games on a computer, cellphone or mobile device, you might imagine that the games come from a giant complex in Silicon Valley, or a high tech company in a foreign country. But sometimes they come from Lutz. “We are a carefully-guarded secret treasure of Lutz, and we love being here,” said Adam Bohn, chief executive of Artix Entertainment. The company began in 2002 in Bohn’s spare bedroom, and today the company employs nearly 50 people and operates out of Northpointe Village. Artix has had great success creating online role-playing games, also known as RPGs, and massively multiplayer online games, or MMOs, that are playable through an Internet browser. The company boasts more than 170 million players who have signed up for the games, which are free to play with upgrades and other in-game advantages available at a price. But with a trend toward mobile-platform gaming,Artix didn’t want players leaving the company’s games at home with their computers. So, after eight months of development, they’ve recently entered the mobile game market with “Battle Gems,” a free game that combines puzzle, fighting and role-playing elements. Players can battle more than 100 different foes, collect items and complete quests, all through their cellphone or tablet. The entire game can be played with no cost to the user, Bohn said, but faster play options and other perks are available for a one-time $10 upgrade. The game currently is available on
COURTESY OF ADAM BOHN
Apple’s iTunes Store, and should be available soon on Google Play as well. Strong user reviews and early adopters are important to making a game successful, and with nearly 80,000 downloads in the first week of release and good word-ofmouth, Bohn said his team’s first attempt at mobile gaming has been a satisfying one. “We’ve put a lot of heart into this game, but we didn’t expect the kind of reaction that our players are giving us,” he said of “Battle Gems.” “Very consistently, from people who know us and people who don’t know us, we’re getting (user grades of) 4.5 out of 5, and 9 out of 10.The reviews have been just overwhelmingly positive.” Bohn acknowledges that “Battle Gems’” flat-fee upgrade option might not produce the most revenue possible, but he believes
that many “free” games end up costing players too much money in the long run. Bypassing time restrictions in some games could cost an additional dollar each time, and individual items might cost anywhere from a few dollars to upwards of $40. While Artix’s games aren’t designed to extract that kind of revenue for the right to keep playing, he believes that providing value is more important, and Bohn wants them designed so players can enjoy it without being asked for extra money at every turn. Instead of focusing just on revenue, Bohn said that his team put extra emphasis on creating a wide variety of monsters and characters the player will face. “We built this game with more monsters than most mobile apps would ever dream of having,” he said. They also made the game larger than originally planned, boosting the
number of levels from 256 to 480. While Artix is enjoying the positive feedback from “Battle Gems” and is looking forward to introducing it on the Google Play store, the future is constantly part of the discussion for a technology-based company. Bohn expects the turnaround time for their next mobile game to be shorter, but he wants the content to be even more creative and outlandish. The company also is looking into bringing versions of their popular browser-based games to the mobile platform. Bohn indicated that original content will always be part of Artix Entertainment’s future projects. “Honestly, we have no shortage of game ideas,” Bohn said. For more information about Artix Entertainment and its games, visit Artix.com, HeroMart.com.

New coach, no problem for Bulls baseball By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
For the past five seasons, the Wiregrass Ranch Bulls boys baseball team has finished the year with a winning record. Last year, they reached the playoffs for the first time in school history and made it all the way to the regional final. But this year, they entered the season with a coach who wasn’t involved in the team’s previous success. Marshall McDougall had not only never coached at Wiregrass Ranch before, he had never coached at the high school level before. For a team on the rise, it might seem like a risky move to put the team’s future in such inexperienced hands. But about halfway through the season, that move looks like a brilliant one. Wiregrass Ranch currently has a 10-4 record, and is in the hunt for the Class 7A District 8 title with a 4-2 record. That mark includes an impressive 12-2 win over district foe Steinbrenner on March 25, and their new coach is pleased with the team’s strong start. “As a whole, our team is pretty solid all the way through,” McDougall said.“It’s a matter of keep pushing the kids, keep improving and keep playing hard, and I think our kids can go a long way.” While he hasn’t spent much time as a coach, McDougall makes up for it in realworld baseball experience. He played professional baseball for more than a dozen years, including a stint with the Texas Rangers. And his baseball days aren’t far be-

hind him: At 35 and retired from the game for just two years, he’s able to not only instruct the team verbally, but go out on the field and show them exactly what he means. McDougall believes the ability to participate with his team allows them to learn in non-verbal ways and buy into his system since it’s coming from someone who can still play the game at a high level. And his players agree. “Sometimes he’ll go out there and show us we’re not as good as we think we are,” said senior Ryan Girard, who pitches and plays first base for the team.“He’s definitely still got all the skills, and he passes them on

what he’s doing, Girard said, and they can follow his lead knowing it comes from experience and knowledge of the game. Zachary Drury, a senior who is a pitcher and plays third base for Wiregrass Ranch, also believes that McDougall’s ability to show the team how to execute plays is an advantage. But he said that his coaching style also helps the team succeed by allowing them to grow without over-the-top yelling and unproductive pressure. “He doesn’t really get mad. I mean, he gets mad, but he doesn’t make you afraid to make a mistake,” Drury said. “He’s a really cool guy and we enjoy having him.” And while the Bulls are enjoying a winning record, McDougall doesn’t want them getting complacent. The coach sets up individual competitions in practice so the players get used to trying to win on a regular basis regardless of record. And there are small consequences for losing, such as a few laps or cleaning up after practice. Just enough, McDougall said, to keep them from being OK with losing or not hungry enough to continue improving. While he believes Wiregrass Ranch can go far this year, McDougall is adamant that his goals don’t really matter. It’s the players, not the coaches, who must have the drive to set high objectives and then find the will to achieve them. “My goal is to help them reach their goal. That’s the best way I can put it,” he said.“We (the coaches) are not playing. It’s up to them to decide what they want. My job is to teach them small things and try to make them reach the goal they want.” ble will benefit the Lions Club of Wesley Chapel. On the upswing: Saint Leo ranked No. 29 in men’s golf By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
The latest polls are out, and for the Saint Leo Lions men’s golf team, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that they’re ranked 29th in the nation among Division II schools in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division II College Coaches’ Poll. The ranking, compiled in a collaboration with Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America, means that the Lions are considered a top program and one of the best in the country. Now the bad news:That 29th-place ranking, while excellent when judging schools around the country, is good for just sixth in their own conference. The Sunshine State Conference is comprised of nine schools, but seven of them received votes in the poll, and five finished in the top 25. The top-ranked team, Barry University, is a member of the SSC.The second-ranked team, Lynn University, is a member as well. Nova, Florida Tech and Florida Southern also are conference schools that are ranked in the top 20, ahead of Saint Leo. So where does that leave the Lions, who are considered a top golf program yet underdogs in their own conference? According to coach Chris Greenwood, it leaves them motivated. “It’s like the old saying,‘If you want to be the best you’ve got to beat the best.’ Competition is a good thing and being in a strong conference is a good thing,” he said. While the rankings show the continuing strength of the SSC, they aren’t much of a surprise to Saint Leo or anyone else. Last year’s NCAA championship was decided in a close match-up, with Barry edging Lynn.
viduals in Ryan Gendron, a golfer who is contributing to the team in just his freshman year. In March, he shot a third-round 69, with a three-round total of 210, and earned medalist honors at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate in Georgia. Gendron believes the team has the right mentality and work ethic to keep improving. “We’re all very positive, and we all push each other to do our best,” he said. “We practice every weekend when we don’t have scheduled practices.” Gendron acknowledges that playing golf in college is different than when he played for Tampa’s Plant High School. Where his team might have faced off against one or two excellent players, teams are filled with talent at the college level. But he believes that playing against those players, and the well-respected teams in their conference, is part of the fun and provides a good measuring stick for the Lions. Gendron also believes the ranking COURTESY OF MIKE CARLSON shows the progress Saint Leo has Freshman Ryan Gendron, thanks to help from coach Chris Greenwood, has helped the Saint Leo made. DEADLINE HERE FOR MAIL BALLOTS Any voter wishing to avoid having to head to a precinct on election day April 8 has until April 2 to request a vote-by-mail ballot in Pasco County. After that, beginning April 3, voters who wish to vote a paper ballot prior to election day can pick up their ballot at any of the three supervisor of elections offices in the county, or at their respective city halls. Local elections are taking place in three municipalities: Dade City, St. Leo and Zephyrhills. Those picking up ballots on behalf of someone else will need a written request from the voter, designating them as the person authorized to carry out that ballot, the Pasco County elections office said in a release. The designee will be asked to provide photo ID, and to complete an affidavit before the ballot can be released. Designees are limited to picking up two ballots in addition to their own, unless the additional ballots are for immediate family members. Elections office locations locally are at 14236 Sixth St., Suite 200, in Dade City, as well as 4111 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., Room 105, in Land O’ Lakes. For information, visit PascoVotes.com.
BURGESS, DIAZ TO SPEAK AT REPUBLICAN CLUB
Republican Florida House candidates Danny Burgess and Minnie Diaz are set to speak at the Wesley Chapel Republican Club April 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Wesley Chapel Hyundai, 27000 Wesley Chapel Blvd. For information, email Mike Moore at wcrepublican@att.net.
EAST PASCO DEMOCRATS MEET
The East Pasco Democratic Club will meet April 21 at 7 p.m. at The Commons,
38130 Pretty Pond Road in Zephyrhills. The speaker will be Lynn Providence of Legal Shield talking about identity theft. For information, call (813) 838-0767.
POLL WORKERS NEEDED FOR AUGUST, NOVEMBER ELECTIONS
Energetic? Service-oriented? Then the Pasco County supervisor of elections may be looking for you. Poll workers are needed for both the primary election Aug. 26 and the general election Nov. 4. Positions are paid, but potential candidates will need to be able to stand, bend, stoop, lift approximately 30 pounds, and have normal vision and manual and physical dexterity. Applicants also need to write and read English, have an email address, and be able to work the entire day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. All positions receive mandatory paid training the month preceding both the primary and general elections. For information, call (800) 851-8754, or visit PascoVotes.com.
BILL WOULD MAKE GAS PUMPING EASIER FOR SOME
State Rep. Mark Danish, D-Tampa has joined forces with state Sen. Jeff Brandes, RSt. Petersburg, to ensure those with disabilities can get the appropriate help they need at the gas pump. H.B. 185 and S.B. 1184 are modeled after a Hillsborough County ordinance that requires decals on pumps that provide information on how to “call for assistance.” Hillsborough passed its bill in 2012, and other counties have followed suit. “This is a cost-effective option that will assist countless persons with disabilities across the state who struggle to refuel their gas,” Danish said in a release. The bill has received support from several organizations, including the Florida Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, Paralyzed Veterans Association, Disabled American Veterans and
AARP, according to a release. Last week, H.B. 185 cleared its last committee hurdle before heading to the floor. Danish is seeking re-election in District 63 against former state Rep. Shawn Harrison, who has outraised Danish just under $72,000 to $61,000 through February, according to state election records.
BURGESS LEADS FEBRUARY FUNDRAISING
Zephyrhills mayor Danny Burgess is $9,000 closer to winning the state House seat currently held by Will Weatherford, RWesley Chapel, after leading fundraising efforts in February. The latest influx of cash brings Burgess to $35,135 for his campaign so far. That’s well ahead of his Republican primary opponent Minerva Diaz, who has a campaign chest of just under $2,500 after pulling in $160 in February. Although she’s nowhere near the level Burgess is, the lone Democrat who has filed to run for the seat so far — Beverly Anne Ledbetter — raised just over $1,600 in February, bringing her total to $4,081. For Burgess, $2,500 of his February haul came from outside his district, including $1,000 from OD-EyePAC, a political action committee representing optometrists. Contributing $500 each were the Committee for an Innovative Florida founded by former Republican State Rep. Shawn Harrison, government relations firm Robert M. Levy & Associates out of Miami, and the Rebuild Florida political action committee, also out of Miami. Burgess also has apparently received an endorsement from the Zephyrhills News, that newspaper taking the unusual step of writing a $500 check to the candidate. Media companies typically avoid financially supporting political candidates. Ledbetter’s largest donation came from out of her district as well. Kim McLaughlin, described in campaign

ROSS RELEASES CAMPAIGN VIDEO
U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, released his first Web video for the 2014 re-election campaign, featuring footage from his announcement tour Jan. 21. It also highlights the work he has done in Congress over the last three years, as well as his future legislative priorities. “It’s been an honor and privilege to represent my friends and neighbors in Washington these past three years,” Ross said. “I first ran for Congress because Washington was broken. While we have made some progress, there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done. I’m asking the people of Hillsborough and Polk counties to send me back to Congress for another term so we can continue working to get our country back on track.” The video also highlights Ross’ work to help cut the federal budget, simplify the tax code, and reduce the size of government to stimulate the economy. So far, Ross is facing Democrat Alan Cohn in the general election, and neither has yet to draw a primary challenger.
BROWNING THROWS SUPPORT BEHIND BURGESS
Pasco County Schools superintendent Kurt Browning endorsed outgoing Zephyrhills mayor Danny Burgess in his run for the Florida House seat currently held by Will Weatherford, R-Wesley Chapel. “Danny grew up in East Pasco like I did, and is a product of the Pasco County school system,” Browning said in a release. “He has an energetic and humble demeanor about him that doesn’t come around too often.” Burgess faces Minerva Diaz in the Republican primary in August, the winner set to run against Democrat Beverly Ledbetter in November.

Maximum Benefits from Minimally Invasive Robotic Surgery
“It could not have worked out better.”
Cheri K., a real patient of St. Joseph’s Hospital-North
After years of pain due to endometriosis, Cheri knew she needed a hysterectomy. When she found out it could be done robotically and close to home at St. Joseph’s Hospital-North, she decided to have the surgery. She experienced minimal pain and was able to go home the next day. Cheri is grateful for the superior care she received. There are many benefits when you undergo a robotic procedure compared to a traditional, “open” surgery, including: Q Shorter hospital stay Q Shorter recovery Q Smaller scars Q Less pain
Watch Cheri’s story at StJosephsNorth.org.
