Amici Pizza plans stand-alone location By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Owners of Amici Pizza & Deli are planning to build a new stand-alone restaurant, with additional retail space, on Wesley Chapel Boulevard. The new restaurant is a short distance from the existing Amici restaurant in Grand Oaks Square, at Wesley Chapel and Pet Lane. Andrea and Josephine Mannino, are

heading toward a construction start of Amici Plaza in spring with an opening likely by the end of 2016. Pasco County records show a conceptual plan with about 3,000 square feet for the restaurant, and about 1,800 square feet for retail. “We’d like to have our own building and a bigger kitchen,” said Andrea Mannino. No decisions have been made on the additional retail space, he said.

The site is located at the corner of Magnolia Boulevard and Wesley Chapel Boulevard, which is also known as County Road 54. Pasco County is moving forward with acquisition of right-of-way along County Road 54 to prepare for the expansion of the twolane road into a four-lane road at the junction of State Road 56 and State Road 54 See PIZZA, page 13A

Craft beers are In the Loop in Land O’ Lakes By Kathy Steele

CALL TODAY FIXED TODAY!

Cooking home brewed beer started as a hobby five years ago, with three friends in Land O’ Lakes meeting up in a garage on Cherbourg Loop. All anyone had to say was – “See you at the loop.” And, the next few hours were devoted to brewing beer. The compliments rolled in. “We had a lot of people like our beers,” said Peter Abreut.“That made us think we could really start something.” By spring, a garage hobby will become

In the Loop Brewing with an on-site brewery, tap and tasting room, and nearly 7,000 square feet for an outdoor beer garden. The brewery, tap and tasting room will open first, with the beer garden opening later on. Abreut and partners, Mark Pizzurro and Joe Traina, are busy renovating a former residence at 3338 Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. The two-story house is next door to a building that houses Interior Elegance and Abreut’s gym, Crossfit En Fuego. The upstairs can be rented for private parties or special events such as birthdays, weddings and office parties. “We’re trying to keep the house as is,”

Pizzurro said.“It has its own character.” A shed on the property will be converted into the brewery. An outdoor patio, decks, an inside/outside serving window and landscaping will complement the beer garden. Noise will be kept at a minimum,Traina said, with low-level background music for the beer garden. “It’s very community oriented,” he said. “That’s our goal. Everything is coming into place. In the Loop Brewing already has a fan base with nearly 900 likes on Facebook from beer enthusiasts who identify as “loopers.” A Portland-based company is delivering brewing equipment. The Pasco County Commission, in January, approved the brewery’s beer and wine licenses. A federal license to brew beer is expected soon. “I’m excited about this. This is a great day for Land O’ Lakes,” said Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore. “This is great for the area’s development. Pasco County School Board members are seeking suggestions for a formal name for a new school being built in the Wiregrass Ranch area of Wesley Chapel. Crews are bustling around the site, as construction work continues on the school, which has been known generically as Elementary W. The school board is asking the public, district staff and students to suggest names so that it can select one before the structure opens. Classes are scheduled to begin at the new elementary school in August. The structure is being built on Mansfield Boulevard, across from John Long Middle School, and down the street from Wiregrass Ranch High School and Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch. When it opens, it will give Wesley Chapel students the opportunity to attend kindergarten through college, along the same road. School board policy encourages the

Balk Jewelry one-of-a-kind By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

For Dan Balk, creating jewelry for a living wasn’t his original path in life. But, he’s glad it’s turned out that way. Balk, who operates a jewelry studio from his home in Lutz, has been making jewelry since 2008—around the time the United States’ recession was in full swing. With a background in athletic training and physical therapy, the New Jersey native spent 13 years working as an associate dean of education for a massage school in Tampa. Simultaneously, he worked as a massage therapist for the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the New York Yankees. However, once the nation’s economy took a tailspin for the worse, Balk’s seemingly stable career was no more. His massage school went bankrupt, and the Yankees, like many companies at the time, began laying off employees. “Massage is very much a luxury for people, and people weren’t spending that type of money at that time,” Balk explained. “I must’ve sent 2,000 to 3,000 resumes in any one of the fields I was licensed to work in, and nothing was happening.” With a wife and two children to support,

In addition to making and presenting jewelry at juried art shows, Balk also teaches jewelry classes seven days a week.

Balk was at a crossroads — until his fatherin-law, Roberto Vengoechea, suggested Balk make some “trinkets” to sell in the meantime. Taking up Vengoechea’s suggestion, Balk served a 28-day apprenticeship under the guidance of his father-in-law, a master jeweler in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Vengoechea’s tutelage turned out to be a “cathartic” and “powerful” experience for Balk. It was like the planets began to align, he said. “I really, really loved what I was watching him do, and what I was doing,” Balk said. “What a boon for us that I was able to learn from someone who was so well-versed in the trade. “We haven’t looked back since,” he said. “This is was what I was made to do.” The craft of making jewelry by hand is declining, Balk said, due in part to the proliferation of graphic design, 3D printing and overseas production. “All of these things that were done by hand — in a couple generations, if we don’t teach other people, they’re lost,” Balk said. “As a craftsperson, you’re under an obligation to teach.” Balk designs and fabricates every piece of jewelry from raw materials. Typically, the process can involve as many as five or six different parties, from the time a piece is designed until it is sold, he said. Balk handles the entire jewelry-making process—whether it’s a ring, a pendant, a necklace or a bracelet. He leaves the “business side of things” to his wife, Nataly. “I create all of my own (metal) sheets, I make all of my own (silver and gold) alloys, I design all of my own pieces, and I finish them; I set all of my own stones, and I select my stones. When I can cut and polish the stones myself, I do that myself,” Balk said. “That’s a premium — that the artist had direct contact with a piece all the way through to completion.” Depending on the type of jewelry and its complexity, Balk may spend anywhere from a few days to a week on a piece. While most of his jewelry designs are labeled as “modern and futuristic,” there’s essentially no limit as to what Balk can cre-

ate based on a customer’s request. From that standpoint, each piece of jewelry made by Balk is “one of a kind,” and not constrained to basic round rings and singular stones. One customer, for instance, had rings and pendants made out of antique silverware. Another had a wedding band containing fossilized dinosaur bone. Others have had shark’s teeth and sea glass casted into their personalized pieces. “If you have the idea, it probably can be made. Because I do it all myself, I’m not limited by just the components I can buy,” Balk explained. “Some (jewelers) say, ‘I do customer ordering — these are the settings you can choose, and these are the bands you can choose.’We don’t do that; we can make anything you want to make. “It’s not limited by a picture in the catalog.” After operating the Singing Stone Gallery in Ybor City for six years, Balk has been working out of his home jewelry studio in Lutz since last August. The change in work location logistically made more sense, especially for teaching jewelry classes, which he’s done since 2012. Balk’s daily “five-step commute” to work allows him to both focus on his craft and teach hands-on, personalized classes in a relaxed setting. “We’re really getting to know each person that comes in. It’s not a class of 17 or 18 people that leave after an hour,” Balk’s wife

said.“He’s taking you into his studio and saying,‘Let me tell you everything I know, and if you have any questions, please let me know.’ He starts very calmly and patiently, and explains everything.” With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, men will often surprise their partner by taking them to one of Balk’s jewelry making classes — a unique experience compared to a typical dinner date. “I’m not against a good meal, and they are memorable when they are good, but you have that night, you eat your food and the next day, you’re done. This kind of thing— you’re making a memory,” Balk said. “It’s an experience as well as a timeless piece that you keep forever,” Nataly said. Joke books raise money to help families By B.C. Manion

Excerpts from the Riddle and Knock-Knock books:

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

They’re little books, but they’re packed with jokes. The idea is to make readers laugh, while raising money for a good cause. One book offers riddles. The other features knock-knock jokes. Both books have been written by kids and are intended for kids. The “Little Book Big Laughs KnockKnock Book” has more than 350 jokes. The “Little Book Big Laughs Riddle Book” has more than 500 riddles. Proceeds from book sales support medical grants for the United HealthCare Children’s Foundation. Since 2007, the foundation has awarded 10,000 grants, totaling more than $29 million. The grants go to children and their families across the United States. The grants typically are used to help pay for medical services, such as physical, occupational and speech therapy, counseling services or surgeries; for prescriptions; and for equipment, such as wheelchairs, orthotics, eyeglasses and hearing aids. The books include jokes and riddles written by children all over the country. There’s even one from Bryant H., a boy from Zephyrhills.

From Gage T., Cheyenne, Wyoming: Where do sheep like to vacation? The Baaaaaahamas.

Johnny B., New Richmond, Wisconsin: Knock-knock. Who’s there? Dewey. Dewey who? Dewey have to eat liver and onions for dinner?

Varnika L., Maplegrove, Minnesota: Where did the elephant put his clothes? In his trunk.

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTO

These little joke books are meant to entertain and help raise money at the same time. The books help families in need to take care of a variety of medical expenses.

Here’s his riddle: What type of bull doesn’t have horns? A bullfrog. The joke books are available at Amazon.com, for $5.99 each. “The inspiration behind these books is to bring smiles and laughter to children, whether in a hospital, in the car, or just hanging out with friends and family,” Matt Peterson, foundation president, said in a news release. The first Little Book-Big Laughs joke

Sawyer G., St. Louis, Missouri: How did the broom manage to get a great girlfriend? He swept her off her feet. Brady C., Fort Sill, South Carolina: How did the egg get up the mountain? It scrambled.

Hunter T., Port Ewen, New York: Knock-knock. Who’s there? Woo. Woo who? Don’t get so excited, it’s just a knock-knock joke. Ethan E., Big Lake, Minnesota: Knock-knock. Who’s there? Handsome? Handome who? Handsome candy through the keyhole and I’ll tell you.

Lyla B., Princeton, Minnesota: Knock-knock. Who’s there? Baby bee. Baby bee, who? Baby bee a doll and bring me a snack.

book was released April Fools’ Day 2014 and was a Mom’s Choice Gold Award recipient for juvenile books. The success of the first book propelled the idea to create

two additional books for a joke book series. For more information about UHCCF, visit UHCCF.org.

Dog show attracts national crowd The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Florida Gulf Coast Clusters — Florida’s largest dog show — gave canine enthusiasts a chance to admire breeds of all shapes and sizes. The all-breed event, which ended Jan. 24, draws contestants and spectators from throughout the country, was sponsored by Purina and hosted by several Tampa Bay kennel clubs.

The event included 10 American Kennel Club All-Breed Dog Shows, specialty shows, conformation, junior showmanship, obedience trials, rally trials and free show tours to learn about AKC dog shows. Visitors also had a chance to go-behindthe-scene to meet dog handlers. The event was at Florida Classic Park in Brooksville, a 50-acre property that has been the site for the show for 15 years.

A Hartmann’s mountain zebra foal appears to be quite tiny standing near the giraffes and in front of elephants at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. The foal was born on Jan. 15.

New zebra foal at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo has welcomed a new zebra foal, making it the second zebra foal born at the zoo in recent months. The foal born on Jan. 15 is a Hartmann’s mountain zebra, the first foal of her species at the zoo. This newborn follows the birth of a female Grevy’s zebra foal on Nov. 23. “With this foal, the zoo has now contributed to the managed population of both zebra species in our conservation programs,” Dr. Larry Killmar, chief zoological officer, senior vice president, and zoo director, said in a news release.

The zoo is currently home to three Hartmann’s mountain zebra: mare “Roxie,” sire “Rex” and the newborn, a female. In keeping with a natural herd structure, mother and baby joined the male on exhibit within a few days, and were reunited shortly thereafter with the bachelor herd of giraffes that share their African habitat. Native to Southern Africa, Hartmann’s mountain zebra are listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with approximately 9,000 mature individuals in the population. In Namibia, hunting and competition for resources (water) from farming (livestock) are the greatest threats to the Hartmann’s mountain species.

The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club honored the outgoing chairs of the annual Lutz Arts & Crafts Show, for planning and managing the event every December for the past 36 years, notwithstanding this year’s sudden cancellation due to a sinkhole. Shirley Simmons, left, and Phyllis Hoedt, both longtime Lutz residents and fixtures at every club activity and community COURTESY OF PATRICIA SERIO event, are retiring from steering this show, which was a yearlong project for both for more than three decades. The ladies dealt with everything from signing on more than 300 vendors, overseeing park layout of vendor booths, conferences with the county and park rangers, and dealing with the 30,000 annual attendees. The woman’s club congratulated Simmons and Hoedt, and honored their long service by presenting them with inscribed plaques containing a collage of photos from the shows through the years. Both will continue to serve as advisors to the new transition committee in planning a newer and better show for 2017.

County records show that construction on the $46 million project would begin in fall 2018 and would be completed in fall 2019. To accommodate the placement of the restaurant and plaza, the Manninos’ requested the county reduce by 9 feet the amount of land acquired for the road project, and also requested a reduction in building setbacks. The county’s Development Review Committee has recommended approval to the Pasco County Commission, which has the final say. Commissioners are scheduled to consider the request on Feb. 9. Pasco now is seeing a burst of new breweries. The vacant ClassB screen-printing business in downtown Zephyrhills will soon open as Zephyrhills Brewing Co. Pasco County commissioners also approved a beer and wine license for Rebel Dog Brewing Co., in New Port Richey. Construction of Amici Plaza will adopt “low impact development principles,” said Stuart Artman, director of engineering projects for Moody Engineering, Inc. Instead of an open-air storm water pond, the site would have an underground storage vault to capture and disperse rainwater. That can decrease potential flooding problems, and provides more area for amenities such as a sidewalk around the restaurant that is separate from the public sidewalk built along the roadway. The site also places parking spaces to the side and rear of the restaurant, another “smart growth” trend in development. “It makes for a more compact and walkable site, which the county is encouraging,” said Chief Assistant County Attorney David Goldstein. But,Traina said the trend for more breweries isn’t about competition, but camaraderie. “The whole culture of the (brewing) community is to be tight- knit,” he said.“It’s so diverse.” Pizzurro is head brewer among the partners. In addition to home brewing, he served as an intern at Big Storm for about a year. In the Loop’s beer selections so far include an IPA, American pale ale, a Vienna lager and farmhouse ale. It is a true partnership, however. Everyone can contribute on beer recipes. Abreut is skilled in marketing;Traina in sales. “We all bring something to the table,” Traina said. And, they take pride in bringing a unique experience to Land O’ Lakes. “It’s helping revitalize this area,” said Abreut.“That’s what we want to do.”

Sunlake sends four to state weightlifting meet By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The move to a more competitive division this season hasn’t fazed the top members of the Sunlake Seahawks girls weightlifting team. They’ve embraced the challenge of moving from Class 1A to Class 2A. Juniors Hayley Parks (169-pound weight class) and Caroline Winstead (139), and seniors Brianna Anderson (183) and Ajani Bell (unlimited) each will compete in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s (FHSAA) Class 2A Girls Weightlifting Finals on Feb. 6 in Kissimmee. Parks,Winstead and Anderson all claimed individual titles in the Class 2A-Region 7 meet at Charlotte High on Jan. 20. Bell finished second in her weight class at the regional. Anderson led the way for the Seahawks with a combined total of 375 pounds from the bench press and clean-and-jerk, followed by Bell (330), Parks (325) and Winstead (285). Seahawks head coach Denise Garcia wasn’t the least bit surprised by the results. “I knew if they hit their (bench press) lifts and clean-and-jerk that it was going to happen,” Garcia said. “They all have good work ethics. It comes from their desire; they’re passionate and they’re dedicated.” Part of that dedication includes following proper practice habits, healthy eating and getting plenty of rest. Having the “right frame of mind” and “lifting with confidence” are other factors in the girls’ achievements, Garcia said.

From left, Sunlake’s Brianna Anderson, Ajani Bell, Caroline Winstead, Katelyn Veddern and Hayley Parks recently competed in the Class 2A-Region 7 Girls Weightlifting Meet at Charlotte High on Jan. 20. Anderson, Bell, Winstead and Parks advanced to the Class 2A Girls Weightlifting Finals on Feb. 6 in Kissimmee.

In advance of the state finals, Coach Garcia has kept track of weightlifting results of competitors from other schools to use as a benchmark for her squad.

“You have to see what everybody else is doing to see where you should go, knowing, ‘This girl does this or this girl does that,’” she said.“You kind of have to do your

homework to set goals.” Out of the 10 different weight classes at the state meet, each class will feature 20 individuals. Based on qualifying results, Anderson is ranked No.1, Parks is ranked No. 5, Bell is No. 13 and Winstead is No. 20 in each of their respective weight classes. “I’m hoping they’ll all do better than where they’re (currently) at,” Garcia said about the girls’ bench press and clean-andjerk results.“The competition is very hard.” Garcia’s motto for each weightlifter is “be better the next day.” In preparation for the looming event, Garcia said practices have been “much more intense.” While practices aren’t necessarily longer, there’s more of a “sense of urgency in the weight room, with a focus on lifting shorter reps of heavier weights,” the coach said. After the conclusion of the state meet, Coach Garcia said the team is taking a twoto-three week break before hitting the weight room again for the 2016-2017 season. Due to FHSAA bylaws, the Seahawks coach won’t be able to provide training during the sport’s offseason months. However, Garcia said Sunlake’s more experienced weightlifters will help guide the team’s underclassman along during open gym sessions. “They know what they’re doing. They know it’s a year-round sport, and that goes to any sport,” Garcia said. “It’s not something you can just pick up and go, ‘OK, I think I want to be competitive, but I haven’t done it in eight months.’ You just can’t do that.”

Fishing for fun — and bragging rights By Kevin Weiss

kweiss@lakerlutznews.com

The South Pasco Bassmasters (SPBM) has been around “forever.” At least that’s what its longtime members say. The Land O’ Lakes-based fishing club prides itself on its “camaraderie, sportsmanship, and commitment to worthwhile activities in the community.” Each year, the club hosts 12 tournaments across various freshwater lakes in Central Florida, including their two-day “Club Classic” at Lake Okeechobee in December. The club, which has 28 members, accepts new participants at all times during the season — the only condition being that new teams (made up of two members) must have a boat they can utilize. If you don’t have a boat, club president John Medvid said you can still join the club as an alternate in the event that another team’s member is unavailable for a particular competition. “It’s a good excuse to get out and get together,” Medvid said about the fishing club. “The majority of us have regular jobs, and

we’re weekend warriors. “We’re in it for fun most of the time,” he said. While it’s mostly friendly competition, there is “some seriousness” to it. According to Medvid, the contests can get “wild” for the 14 two-member teams. “The guys are all buddy-buddy until it comes to the competition,” the club president said. “Some of these guys are really competitive and want to win. Sometimes there’s trash talk, where,‘Hey, I’m going to beat you.’ Then another guy steps in and says,‘Oh yeah, I’m going to take you all on.’” Medvid, who’s fished for more than 50 years, said fishing in Florida is a “different animal,” compared to fishing in other states. “Florida’s one of the most difficult states to fish, because of all the changes with the weather,” he explained.“The average lake is about 6 (feet) to 10 feet (deep), then you go out of the state and lakes are 20 feet; some are even 200 feet in some of these reservoirs. “Water temperature plays a big factor…in Florida.” The best places to fish vary, based on the time of the year, Medvid said. During winter months, fisherman search

Do your research,” he advised. Of course, he added, it’s important to “get out into the water and experience all the different conditions.” But, doing a little homework can help, he reiterated. “Reading does help — it gives you different ideas, different techniques, and then you go out there and try to apply them.” Even after decades of fishing, one aspect never gets old for Medvid: Seeing the sunrise, as he prepared for a club outing. “It can be very peaceful. housands headed to Dade City on Jan. 30 to the 19th annual Kumquat Festival. The traffic coming off Interstate 75 was moving slow, as cars stacked up on the way to the festival. The fairground’s lot filled quickly, with lines of festivalgoers waiting to be shuttled to the event in historic downtown Dade City. Even as late as 2:30 p.m., people were still arriving and forming lines at the shuttle stop, gearing up for an afternoon of music, shopping and kumquat pie. They also had a chance to sample kumquat salsa, check out a car show, grab a bite to eat and enjoy many other activities. An army of volunteers help to ensure that the event — which attracts people from the Tampa Bay region and beyond — runs smoothly. For many people, the event is their first introduction to

downtown Dade City. More than 400 vendors set up booths with arts and crafts, handmade quilts, knitted caps of alpaca, locally harvested honey, soaps and jewelry. Local antique shops, restaurants and delis saw a steady stream of people as well. Miss Pasco County walked past Lunch on Limoges where guests inside dined on pecan chicken and crab cakes. Outside Dade City’s historic courthouse, downhome country musicians entertained a toe-tapping crowd resting in fold-out chairs. More lines formed at the Kumquat Growers tent for free samples of everything kumquat – jams, jellies, marmalade, chutney, and vinaigrette. Kumquat pie and kumquat ice cream were favorites. Some people walked back to their cars hugging planters with kumquat trees to plant in their yards. And, another festival in celebration of the sweet and tangy citrus fruit put Dade City and St. Joseph in the spotlight, again.

PET of the WEEK

Very bossy, but very loved Stash was rescued from the pound in 2002 when he was 6 years old. His owner had passed away and nobody was even looking at him. Stash was very shy until the new owners gave him some attention, and they just knew they had to have him. His funniest trait, besides constantly giving kisses, is that he knows how to open doors. The owners had to put an automatic lock on the front door, otherwise Stash would let the other pets out of the house. Door handles were replaced with knobs on the bathroom doors, too. He is now 20 years old and has managed to survive a tumor in his head. Stash resides with the De Vroeg family in Land O’ Lakes.
