PHSC chooses new president By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Timothy Beard has been selected to become Pasco-Hernando State College’s fourth president. The PHSC District Board of Trustees announced its choice at the conclusion of its presidential search, on March 18. Beard, vice president of student development and enrollment management at PHSC in New Port Richey, was among a field of four finalists. The other finalists worked at Klamath Community College in Klamath Falls, Oregon; West Virginia University at Parkersburg, Parkersburg, West Virginia; and, St. Petersburg College in St. Petersburg. They decided to promote Beard to replace Katherine Johnson, who is retiring on June 30. Beard’s appointment becomes effective July 1, pending the successful outcome of contract negotiations. “We are pleased to extend an offer for the presidential position to Dr. Beard,” Ed

Blommel, PHSC District Board of Trustees and presidential search committee chair, said in a release. “As a senior administrator at PHSC for the past eight years, he is already familiar with the college and has an Timothy Beard understanding of its strategic goals and mission.” Beard is delighted to be stepping into the college’s leadership role. “This is a surreal opportunity,” said Beard, who has worked for the college since 2007 and expects to build on the good work that has been accomplished there. Before joining PHSC, Beard was vice president and dean of student affairs at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, and director of student affairs and enrollment management at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. He earned his doctoral degree in rehabil-

itation counseling, with a special emphasis in higher education administration, from Florida State University in Tallahassee. He also has a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from FSU. Pasco-Hernando State College has more than 15,000 students and about 700 employees, including adjunct faculty. Pasco-Hernando State College awards certificates, diplomas, associate degrees and baccalaureate degrees. The college has campuses in Dade City, Wesley Chapel, New Port Richey, Spring Hill and Brooksville. Beard said he plans to pursue an initiative that would enlist the help of faith communities and other organizations to help support students, through scholarships and in other ways. He is looking forward to strengthening the ties between PHSC and the communities it serves. “I really want to bring the community into the college and the college into the community,” Beard said.

Pasco commissioners approve a study for Wiregrass Sports Park By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County commissioners are in a quandary about the fate of the proposed Wiregrass Sports Park. Should they try again to work a deal for a world-class sports complex or build a district park for local sports teams? Commissioners voted 4-1 on March 10 to take a wait-and-see approach with a feasibility study that will gauge the market for a sports complex with the potential to draw national tournaments, and yield millions in tourism tax dollars. The results also could show that the county’s money is better spent on a park that caters to local sports teams. The study is intended to give county officials, residents and potential park operators an idea of what will work at the park site, located near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard off State Road 56. “We think we’ll get the ability to expedite (the process) because people will understand it better, and we think the quality of applications will improve,” said Richard Gehring, the county’s planning and development administrator. Johnson Consulting Inc., a sports consulting firm with national and international clients, will be paid $35,000 for the study, expected to take less than 12 weeks. The study will include marketing and needs assessments as well as recommendations on development costs, operating and financial responsibilities, and funding options.

Commissioner Jack Mariano

“I think it’s time to move forward,” said Commissioner Mike Moore. “It’s a positive. People in my district want to see it sooner rather than later.” Commissioner Jack Mariano voted against the study. Instead of spending money on a study, he said county officials should explore why the deal with Pasco Sports LLC to build a multimillion-dollar sports complex fell apart. “I’d like to find out why he (Gary Sheffield) didn’t like the contract,” Mariano said.“We could look at that first.” In December, commissioners dropped plans to partner with Pasco Sports to build a sports complex on 100 acres near The Shops at Wiregrass regional shopping mall. The land is part of more than 200 acres do-

nated to the county by the Porter family. Partners James Talton and former major league baseball player Gary Sheffield had proposed to build 20 ball fields and dormitories on the site. They had envisioned a youth baseball camp that would attract national tournaments and deliver more than $300 million annually in economic impact to the county. According to the agreement, the county would commit between $11 million and $14 million in tourism dollars to the project. But Talton and Sheffield let a deadline pass without delivering on a pledge to provide $3 million for the complex’s design. Other projects, both rumored and real, are competing with the proposed sports complex. Z Mitch LLC had a groundbreaking in February for a major ice hockey and sports complex off Interstate 75 at the State Road interchange in Wesley Chapel. The facility is expected to open in fall 2015 with four fullsize rinks. But the 150,000-square-foot facility will accommodate a wide range of sports including soccer, lacrosse and basketball. Rumors also persist that Hillsborough County may be in line for a new sports facility. Most Pasco commissioners agreed the feasibility study would be a valuable tool in sorting out the county’s options. “It will either validate or invalidate the marketing of the complex and what’s needed in this area,” said Chairman Ted Schrader. “It will give us the confidence to go forward with some sort of park project.”

Striking up some winning ways By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Donna Fernandez played soccer until she was forced to give it up because she had asthma. She wasn’t too disappointed. “I wasn’t very good at it anyway,” the 14year-old said. Her mother, Andrea Elbrecht, wanted her daughter to find a sport in which she could excel and have fun. She had no idea that would turn out to be bowling. “I didn’t know the first thing about bowling,” said Elbrecht, who lives in Land O’ Lakes. Chance — and a friend’s birthday party at a bowling alley — settled the matter. Fernandez found her niche. The teenager has had the highest average score in Hillsborough County in her age group for the past two years. She currently is topping her own previous records with an average 180 points a game. She and 15-year-old Jacob Kostoff, who lives in Trinity, will test their skills against hundreds of bowlers this summer, when they head to Chicago to compete at the national Jr. Gold Championship. Kostoff eased into bowling naturally by watching his father play in a local league. He rolled his first ball toward the tenpins when he was just 8. The ball was so heavy, he lifted it with two hands. Seven years later, he is a rarity, a left-handed bowler with a two-handed bowling style. Fernandez and Kostoff competed in a tournament in DeLand to secure their tournament spots. Their coach is Lucy Sandelin, a Hall of Fame bowler who is a two-time winner of the United States Bowling Congress Senior Queens title. She hopes to win a third title this year. Sandelin also is a former member of Team USA. She coaches with World Cup Bowling Academy, based in Tampa. Practice sessions in coming weeks will focus on gaining real-time experience in bowling on lanes with different oil patterns. Bowling alleys have “lane machines” that put down varying amounts of oil over parts of the width and length of each lane. Sandelin is focusing on five of 24 recognized patterns, each named after a city that has hosted the Olympics. The patterns aren’t visible to the eye, but they make a huge difference in game strategies, she said. Competitors in Chicago will learn a week before the tournament start what pattern will be applied to the lanes. One of the most challenging patterns is the Los Angeles pattern, said Sandelin. “It’s their (bowlers’) nemesis,” she said

From left, Donna Fernandez, 14, of Land O’ Lakes; Jacob Kostoff, 15, of Trinity; Coach Lucy Sandelin; Alec Ballard, 16, of LandO’ Lakes; and Chandler Carr, 14, of Lutz will compete in an upcoming state tournament. Fernandez and Kostoff also will compete in the Jr. Gold Championship this summer in Chicago.

because it forces bowlers to roll their balls close to the gutters to avoid the heaviest amounts of oil. Her students make detailed notes. The notes offer explicit instructions: “It tells them ‘I stand here. I look here. I use this hand position. I use this ball speed,’ ” Sandelin said. Fernandez and Kostoff have very different styles. “His two-handed style is phenomenal,” Sandelin said. “People look at him and go ‘wow.’” His goal is to attend college on a bowling scholarship and then to turn pro. He gave fleeting consideration to switching to a more standard one-handed bowling style, but decided to stick with his approach. After all, Australian bowler Jason Belmonte is a two-handed bowler. “Right now, he’s the best bowler in the world,” Kostoff said. Fernandez is laid back and doesn’t give in to distractions or pressure. “A lot of things don’t bother her,” Sandelin said. “That’s going to be to her advantage (in Chicago).” Her calm demeanor may be disarming. “She’s a fierce competitor,” Sandelin said. Both youths play in three bowling leagues and practice three to four days a week at bowling alleys in Pasco and Hillsborough counties. On a recent Thursday night, they were at

Royal Lanes in Lutz, along with 14-year-old Lutz resident Chandler Carr and Land O’ Lakes resident 16-year-old Alec Ballard. The foursome will compete later this year in a state tournament. Carr, who has been playing baseball since he was 4, is relatively new to bowling. He just started last year. “Now all he wants to do is bowl, bowl, bowl,” said his mother, Suzin Carr. “He finally found something he really likes. It is something you can do as an individual. You are part of a team, but you also enjoy it as an individual sport.” He’s gone from 43 points a game to a high of 265. “He’d do it every day of the week, if I let him,” she said. When bowling, teammates often highfive each other. “They want to win, but they are also supportive of one another,” Carr said. Sandelin, 58, started bowling at age 6. Bowling is a sport open to everyone, she said. “A lot of these kids don’t have other sports they can play,” she said. “They have asthma. They can’t run. But in bowling, you don’t have to be tall or strong. You need eye and hand coordination.” Bowling offers so many life lessons to students, Elbrecht said. That’s why she is disappointed that public schools in Pasco and Hillsborough – with one exception - don’t offer it in school athletics.

In Hillsborough County, Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate Charter School is the only public school with a bowling team, according to the school’s website. Boys and girls compete on a coed team. Schools are missing out on opportunities to include more students in athletics and also in giving students a chance at winning scholarships, Elbrecht said. Through its SMART (Scholarship Management and Accounting Reports for Tenpins) program, the United States Bowling Congress helps student bowlers secure scholarship money for college. Students can earn scholarship dollars based on the number of pins they knock down, Elbrecht said. “It’s a fantastic sport. I’ve known a lot of kids who funded their college educations.” Her daughter has her scholarship money waiting in a USBC account and hopes to attend college on full scholarship. Long-range, she wants a career in the medical field. But bowling will be a lifelong passion. “You can control what you do,” Fernandez said. “You can sort of show off in an independent game, and you can improve.” And, she likes her chances in Chicago. “I have a mental game. That’s what most bowlers don’t have,” Fernandez said. Sandelin’s advice to her students is this: “Enjoy the journey … Make friends. Enjoy the process.”

Endangered leopard born at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

An endangered clouded leopard gave birth to a single male kitten on March 7 at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, according to zoo officials. As the first kitten born to the zoo’s pair of 4-year-old clouded leopards, this offspring introduces new genetics into the managed population in North America. The parent leopards, Yim (male) and Malee (female), arrived at the Zoo in 2011 at 6 months of age. The Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP) paired the two as potential mates, a news release says. The Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan is a program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that is designed to support the conservation of select wildlife species at risk of extinction. There are now a total of 87 clouded leopards in 22 AZA-accredited institutions. “This birth signifies a milestone accomplishment in our conservation programs at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo,” according to Larry Killmar, vice president of animal science and conservation for the zoo. “Species survival programs for animals like clouded leopards take years of planning, development and staff commitment. This kitten will contribute to the long term viability of our conservation efforts within the managed population, as well as range countries.” Members of the zoo’s animal care staff were on watch for the birth following breeding and gestation estimates of approximately three months. Shortly after its birth, the zoo’s animal care team observed the kitten to be a male, and are now providing around-the-clock care. Clouded leopard kittens are hand-reared to facilitate introductions to potential mates at 6 months of age, as with Yim and Malee, the news release says. Within the AZA-managed population, rearing the kittens by hand for socialization and introducing them to potential mates at a young age has been very successful in reducing fatal attacks by aggressive adult males.

NATURE NOTES

Good gardening maxim: Right plant, right place By Whitney C. Elmore Special to The Laker

PHOTO COURTESY OF LOWRY PARK ZOO

Lowry Park Zoo’s animal care team noticed shortly after this kitten’s birth that it is a male. The kitten is getting around-the-clock care.

The kitten is feeding well and is gaining weight. It was 300 grams at birth and weighed in at 565 grams on day 10. He is expected to be strong enough to begin walking within the next few weeks. He will be hand-reared until weaned at about 3 months of age. At that time the AZA SSP will make a determination about his future home. Clouded leopards are the smallest of the “big cats,” weighing 30- 50 pounds in adulthood and measuring about 5-feet long, including its long tail. Native to Southeast Asia, clouded leopards are found in forests and rainforests. They are known as shy and reclusive cats. As a forest-dependent species, the leopard’s native range is undergoing the world’s fastest regional deforestation rates. High levels of hunting and poaching also make the species vulnerable to extinction.

Hot bats, hot start for Saint Leo By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Saint Leo University’s baseball team is off to a 21-5 start. While the Lions have had strong records the last two years under coach Sean O’ Connor, his third season at the helm has produced the best results so far. They won 17 out of their first 18 games, and currently lead the nation in both hits and runs in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II play. They’re ranked 15th in the D2 Baseball News poll, and 16th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. O’ Connor admits he is surprised by the team’s performance — he actually thought it would be better. “I’m shocked we have five losses at this point,” he said. “We haven’t played our best baseball, to be honest with you.” Still, to be 21-5 is an impressive start, and to build on consecutive 30-plus win seasons is no easy feat. O’ Connor attributes the team’s success this year to having a lot of returning players. The team’s starting lineup this year is about the same as last year, and playing underclassmen in the past is paying off now. The Lions also benefit from a focus on depth during the recruiting process. O’ Connor wanted to avoid tying their fortunes to one or two star players, where an injury or slump could derail the entire season. Instead the team has depth, with players on the bench that could start for other schools. While they might not get as much playing time as the starters, those athletes can take over when necessary without a big drop-off in talent or production. “We’ve tried to build this team so that when something does go wrong, we’re fully prepared for it and somebody else will step in and do the job that’s more than capable of doing so,” O’Connor said. That method seems to be working, with double-digit run production in more than half of their games. But even with the strong start, O’Connor warns that there’s no guarantee of post-season success just yet. They weren’t selected for the regional tournament the past two years, and with most of the conference schedule ahead of them, they have to win when it matters most to make the tournament. “The real test is the conference,” O’Connor said. “It’s nice that we’re 21-5, but if we don’t finish in the top two or three spots in the conference, it doesn’t mean a thing.” The Sunshine State Conference provides a pretty tough test for its teams. All eight schools have a winning record, and five of

much passion, O’ Connor said that Saint Leo plays with a lot of emotion. Being vocal and staying invested in the moment is part of the team’s personality, and he wants the team to remain that way. And if that passion gets them to the first regional tournament of his tenure as coach, he thinks they can keep it going from there. The talent level is so high in the Sunshine State Conference, O’ Connor thinks the teams that escape it have an advantage over teams that don’t face that level of competition on a regular basis. “If you get out of the conference, you’ve got a good shot at going to the World Series,” he said. Saint Leo is also proving that they can bounce back after losses as well. After being swept by Nova Southeastern earlier this month, they followed it up by winning four of their next five, including two of three against Florida Tech, ranked 10th at the time. While there’s still a lot of baseball left to Dylan Harris, who attended Land O’ Lakes High School, leads the team in runs and hits. play before the season ends in early May, O’ Saint Leo leads the nation in those same categories in NCAA Division II baseball. Connor believes he has the kind of team that can get over the hump and make a run in the regional tournament and World Series. them have 19 wins or more. or most people, Iraq is a faraway place on a glowing computer or television screen. It’s a place where we send soldiers and spouses and sisters, and pray for their safe return. It’s somewhere we forget as our work, softball practice, income taxes or other things absorb our attention, until the next news report pulls us back to images of desert and tanks. For Jwan Al Brwe, Iraq isn’t a foreign country. It’s not just a trending topic on political talk shows. It is a place she once called home. “In my country, there’s a lot of beautiful, simple stuff in life,” said Al Brwe, who now lives in Land O’ Lakes with her sister. She recalls simple pleasures she enjoyed while growing up in Duhok, a town in Northern Iraq. She recalls the warm bread, right from the oven, that her father brought them before the children left for school, and the fresh milk delivered daily to their doorstep by a farmer. She has haunting memories, too: The threats of bombing and poisonous gas. Fleeing through the mountains on a dangerous trek to Turkey to escape. Seeing people starving and dying as they awaited permission to cross the border. When they reached the border, Al Brwe recalls being rejected and forced to return to the family’s decimated town. She also recalls being jailed in Greece, after another desperate attempt to escape. Then, after years of hoping, planning and praying, she remembers finally arriving in the United States. Her memories are documented in her book, “Hope to the Last Breath: Flowers Among the Thorns in the Land Between Two Rivers,” released in December by CHB Media. Besides conveying what happened in Iraq, she wants to bring attention to what’s happening there now.

LEAVING HOME

invasions, aerial assaults and chemical attacks. When politicians in the United States criticized Hussein for “using chemical weapons against his own people,” they were referring to the region where Al Brwe and her family lived. A particularly brutal attack occurred in the town of Halabja, a 90-minute drive from Al Brwe’s Duhok. When their town was rumored to be next, they knew it was time to leave. Al Brwe and her family, as well as her uncle’s family, fled to the mountains. The group of 16 was among a million people clamoring to find safety. They spent several days crossing the mountains to reach the Turkish border, where they begged for admittance. They stayed there for more than a month, suffering while awaiting an answer. “We were melting snow to stay hydrated,”Al Brwe recalled. They were forced to burn money to fuel the fire, and her father rooted around in the ground, seeking anything he could find they could eat. Thousands died, many of them children and infants, and they were buried beneath piles of dirt because there were no tools to prepare a proper grave. Al Brwe was 9. She was starving and dehydrated, and her hair began to fall out. “When you’re young, when you live that kind of life, you’re not young anymore,” she said. “You think like an adult. That’s the sad part. They steal your childhood away.” There are other painful chapters in her

story, including being rejected by Turkey and returned in trucks to Duhok, which had been attacked. Aside from their beds, little remained of their home. They stayed there for years, until they could save enough money for visas before trying to escape again. As Al Brwe’s family lived through this period in Iraq, they technically weren’t part of the conflict. Al Brwe is not a Kurd and her family is not Muslim, the dominant Kurd faith. Her family members are Chaldean Christians, affiliated with the Catholic Church. But bombs don’t differentiate between religions, so the danger was as real for them as for anyone else. “My faith was shaken,” Al Brwe said. “I’m like ‘God if you’re watching, how are you letting all these people die?’ You stop believing.” She was angry at Turkey for rejecting them, angry with the Iraqi government for persecuting them and angry with the world community for ignoring them, even though it knew what was happening, she said. “We felt abandoned,” she said.

A FAITH RESTORED

Over time — through hard work, time and introspection — her faith became a source of strength again. And that renewed faith would help her through another trying time in her young life. With temporary visas in hand, her family made it into Turkey this time. They planned to escape by hiding on meat trucks, en route to Greece, but were

caught and jailed.Al Brwe was 15. But a change in the law during their incarceration allowed refugee families to stay. The family eventually reached the United States and was joined by her uncle’s family later. Even that happiness was tempered by loss. Within a year, her father, David, passed away from lung cancer. It is no coincidence, Al Brwe believes, that her father held on until his family had settled into their new country. “When you carry so much burden in your life, and you know that your children are safe, then you can let go,” she said. While “Hope to the Last Breath” tells a story of horrific suffering, Al Brwe wants it to have a positive effect on its readers. “Americans have this beautiful love that you guys give,” said Al Brwe, who became a citizen in 2005. “When you’re surrounded by kind people, it heals you. I got healed slowly. It took years.” Besides describing incidents of the past, the book serves to remind people of the new threat facing the people of Iraq. The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, is terrorizing the region, she said. “Today, everything that happened to me — it’s similar, but a different situation — is happening today, and the world is still not looking at them,” she said. While Al Brwe is free now to pursue her passions, including art and dance, she continues to pray for her own healing, for the safety of her family in Iraq and for the world to take note of her people’s suffering. She also gives thanks for being given the strength that has carried her through dark times. Al Brwe hopes that her family’s fight for survival in Iraq decades ago, and their ultimate freedom, will help to encourage others who are facing struggles and challenges. “Never stop hoping, no matter what you’re doing in life,” she said. “We can change the world by being kind. Kindness is contagious.” “Hope to the Last Breath” is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as in ebook format for Kindle. For more information, contact Al Brwe at haveni2007@yahoo.com.

Al Brwe, now 32, and her family suffered in Northern Iraq as a result of war, but it’s not the one we’ve seen play out over the past dozen years. Before that war and before Operation Desert Shield, Iraq and Iran were at war throughout most of the 1980s. Border conflicts were common and each side suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties. After that war ended, the people in Northern Iraq faced more conflict — not from Iran, but from their own government. That part of the country is dominated by Kurds (an ethnic group found in several countries in the region) and was under constant oppression by the Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein. The Kurds wanted self-rule. Hussein re- Jwan Al Brwe will never forget the death that surrounded her family’s escape to the United States. But now she focuses on life, including sponded with genocide, by way of ground dancing the Argentine tango and documenting it in her art.

It seemed only fitting that Randy Surber, president & CEO for Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, get the first whack at the east wall in the hospital's 'M" Building. Surber was first in a line of several hospital administrators and Wellness Center guests to mark the beginning of The Creation Health Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills.

New wellness center will expand healthy options The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills recently had a “demolition party” to give community leaders and residents a sneak-peek of its planned stateof-the-art Creation Health Wellness Center. The facility will be three times the size of the current wellness center and will be housed at 38233 Daughtery Road in Zephyrhills, near the hospital campus. “By creating this wellness center, we’ll become a beacon of light that can help empower our community to discover the victory in personal wellness,” Casio Jones, director of the Wellness Center, said in the release.“Without our community we wouldn’t be here and our community deserves a wellness center like this one. Wellness will

be a big part in extending the healing ministry of Christ.” The wellness center is intended to provide something for everyone, including an expanded fitness floor and equipment, personal and group training space, expanded spa with manicures, pedicures, body wraps and massage, Kid’s Zone, cooking demonstrations and more. Members will continue to enjoy the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program, pool access for water aerobics, nutritional program and diabetes education. Membership presale for the new Wellness Center begins May 2015. The center will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For more information, visit FHZeph.org. George Coffin, of Zephyrhills, who belongs to the Wellness Center, takes a crack at the wall.

Casio Jones, the director of the planned Wellness Center, gets a positive reaction from the crowd as he gives the wall a shot with the sledgehammer.

Eight-year-old Tyler Story gets ready to whack the wall with a sledgehammer during the celebration marking construction of the new Wellness Center.

R.W. Morgan, of Zephyrhills, takes a look at the gaping hole in the wall as the demolition party winds down. Morgan's mother, Marilyn Morgan, is a Wellness Center member and attended the party celebrating the construction of a new Wellness Center.
