Cybercrimes on the rise, expert says

Pasco Sheriff Sgt. Sam Pepenella knows that better than most — as the unit supervisor of the agency’s cyber and computer forensic investigations.

The Sheriff’s Office processes about 9,000 digital devices — phones, tablets, computers — every year, a significant rise from when Pepenella helped form the special unit nearly a decade ago.

“It’s getting busier,” the law enforcement officer said.

In traditional crime, perpetrators use a pry bar and pop open a door, Pepenella

said. Cybercriminals, he said, run their fingers over a keyboard and find a way to break in.

Much of Pepenella’s talk focused on common online scams his unit has been seeing lately.

Celebrate Earth Day in the garden: Reduce, reuse and recycle

Not listening to those old CDs anymore?

String them together and use them to harmlessly ward off birds from using your garden as a buffet.

Find an old wooden pallet or gutter?

These can easily be turned into great planters for shallow rooted plants, such as strawberries or ornamentals such as petunias.

Lean a pallet up against a tree or barn and let the plants flow down like a trellis.

Beautiful and functional!

Arrange three or four pallets, turned on end and tied together to form a square and you have a compost bin.

The possibilities are endless.

Going green is easy, cheap and environmentally beneficial for us all.

Upcycling household items to something with a useful, new life can be rewarding and fun. Let the creative juices flow, get the kids or grandkids involved and make a difference this Earth Day.

Rain barrels, compost and using organic matter for mulch are some excellent ways to go green in the garden.

But, there also are endless ways to upcycle outdoors to attract wildlife, while reducing, reusing, and recycling more nontraditional items into creative and fun, and practical items.

As Earth Day 2019 approaches, which is officially on April 22, consider using those old nylons to tie up newly planted trees or stake a tomato plant.

A milk jug with multiple holes poked in the lid makes an excellent watering can for gently sprinkling flower pots.

You can also cut a milk jug in half and use the bottom half as a planter for seeds (just cut a few slits in the bottom for drainage) and the top half as a soil scoop with a built-in handle.

Have some old mini-blinds that you just can’t bring yourself to throw out? Cut the slats into 6-inch strips and use them for plant labels in the garden.

Plastic or foam drinking cups make great seed starters (again cut a few slits in the bottom for drainage), as do fabric shopping bags, which look beautiful hanging on a porch or along a wall with trailing flowers flowing out and over the top.

Or, you can take paper towel or toilet paper tubes, partially roll them in a few sheets of newspaper and fold over the bottom, slip out the tube and voila! You have instant biodegradable seed-starting containers that you can plant directly into the garden without having to remove the seedling.

Old newspapers and cardboard boxes make outstanding weed blockers. Simply layer them over weedy spots in the garden and overlap them slightly to block the sun from reaching the ground, top them with some soil or mulch to hold them in place, and you’ll have months of excellent weed control. Just avoid the glossy or waxy paper products, as they might leach things into the environment that don’t belong.

and flower beds to make beautiful borders that will add an enchanting decorative touch with many colors and heights.

Got an old mailbox? Don’t throw it out.

Remove the door and add a block of wood to seal the opening. Cut a central hole cut out of the block for birds to enter and exit. No need to add strings or nesting material as these can be harmful to wildlife.The birds will do the heavy lifting on move-in day to build their nests inside.

Or, remove the mailbox door and add dozens of various widths of bamboo shoots to create a bee abode. More pollinators mean more flowers and fruits in your garden, and a healthier environment.

Plastic drink bottles can be turned into mini-greenhouses by simply removing the bottom and using the top half as a cover to protect tender seedlings from cold, with the bottom becoming a planter.

Old glass plates or chinaware make pretty “puddlers” for butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators needing to rest and drink from shallow water. Even an old boot can make a great garden planter that will surely get some attention.

Most anything that seems like it has lived out its useful life can be helpful in the garden.

Place old dryer sheets or the lint from the

dryer lint trap in the bottom of a pot to prevent soil from flowing out of the bottom of the pot.

County offices close for Good Friday Pasco County Government offices, including the constitutional offices and the courts, will be closed April 19 in observance of Good Friday. All offices will reopen on April 22.

Pasco County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources offices, recreation complexes and community centers will also be closed.

But, the parks and beaches will stay open to the public from dawn to dusk.

Pasco County Public Transportation will remain open for service on all fixed routes and paratransit; however, administrative offices will be closed to walk-ins. Phone lines will remain open.

Pasco County Animal Services will be closed, and an animal control officer will only be available for emergencies. The adoption center will reopen on April 20.

The Pasco County Resource Recovery Facility, West Pasco Class III, and the East Pasco Transfer Station will be closed, but will be open to Pasco County licensed commercial haulers.

All Pasco County libraries will be closed on April 19 and resume regular hours on April 20.

Fresh Tex Mex With A Fiesta Flair Special to The Laker / Lutz News

Can’t wait for Cinco de Mayo? Then you must try Chuy’s in Wesley Chapel.

This fun restaurant specializes in Tex Mex cuisine, made fresh daily, that is served in a fun and colorful setting. Elvis Presley is its patron saint, and a Happy Hour purchase comes with a complimentary nacho bar served out of the trunk of a classic car, complete with tailfins.

“Nothing in our restaurant is frozen except for French fries and Push-Up Pops,” said John Bassett, bar manager.

“Everything is fresh — the lime juice, the sugar water we use for margaritas, the chicken and beef in our fajitas that we marinate for 24 hours. We cut fresh salad and produce every day. We roast our tomatoes for the ranchero sauce. We use our own tomatillos for the tomatillo sauce. We make all of our sauces fresh every single day. Everything is fresh.”

Chuy’s especially prides itself on the freshness of its tortillas.

“We hand roll every tortilla we serve,” said Bassett. “We make the masa dough every day for our fresh flour tortillas, and shape them on a comal, which is a heated surface, right in front of our guests.”

Happy Hour is a not-to-be-missed experience at Chuy’s, with its unique signature nacho bar set up in the trunk of a 1957 Chrysler Imperial.

“We have the back end of a car, with the trunk lid up, filled with queso, ground beef, refried beans, chips and salsa,” said Bassett. “The nacho bar is included with the Happy Hour, which is weekdays from 4 to 7.”

Chuy’s does everything with style, including its decor. Hanging above the nacho bar car in the Chihuahua Lounge is a school of wooden fish, hand-carved by a family in Mexico that supplies the fish for every Chuy’s franchise.

“Another thing that Chuy’s does is hangs pictures of our guests’ dogs on our walls,” Bassett said. “If you bring in a framed picture of your dog, we’ll give you a free appetizer, and we’ll hang up your dog’s picture for everyone to see!”

Fans of Elvis Presley also delight in Chuy’s. Not only does Chuy’s maintain a small shrine of Presley that is adorned with candles and beads, the restaurant also keeps The King’s memory alive in its menu and calendar of events.

“Elvis was brought to us by our guests,” Basset said. “The first restaurant had an Elvis picture, and our guests just kept bringing in memorabilia. We also celebrate his birthday every year. Last year if you arrived in your best Elvis or Priscilla Presley costume, you ate for free. And, on our menu, we have an Elvis Memorial Combo that’s one of the most popular items.”

Each Chuy’s restaurant has its own charity, and the Wesley Chapel location sponsors Healing Horses in Odessa, which pairs abused and neglected horses with special-needs and at-risk children.

It also is collecting donations for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

“We put a lot of love into our food,” Bassett said. “We want to make sure you come get the best margaritas and Tex Mex food in the city, right here.”

Painting rocks with a spring theme The Land O’Lakes Branch Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, recently hosted a rock painting event where participants were encouraged to channel their inner artist by painting rocks with a spring theme, in honor of Earth Day. ne of the best restaurants in Pasco and north Hillsborough is in a place many would never expect — The Hilton Garden Inn in Lutz, located next to the Suncoast Parkway on State Road 54.

“People are always surprised by the outstanding food and service we offer here,” said Robert Scaffedi, who has been executive chef since the hotel opened two years ago.

Assisting Scaffedi in the kitchen are Sous Chef Jay Raskin, who has 26 years in food service, and Pastry Chef Luciano Visentin, who began his career in his native Italy over 35 years ago.

“We’re reversing the perception that mid-range hotels have just average food,” said Scaffedi. “Luciano’s pastries are off the charts, and Jay’s vast knowledge and energy are key to our success. We complement each and have created a dream team in our kitchen.”

The restaurant’s name, The Garden Grille & Bar, is misleading because it offers extensive menus for breakfast and dinner. Plus, its holiday buffets are an epicurean dream that boast an extensive menu, especially considering its affordable family pricing.

The Hilton’s April 21st Easter Brunch is $32.95 for adults, and even includes a complimentary mimosa.

“Everything on our buffet is homemade,” said Scaffedi. “We take the time to make everything from scratch, so we know it is made right.”

The Hilton Garden Inn is serving its Easter Buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Seatings are every half hour, and

reservations are recommended.

You will also find exquisite offerings on the hotel’s dinner menu, including Fusilli Carbonara, 12 oz.

Dinner is served from 5 to 10 p.m.

Pastry Chef Visentin makes all of his desserts, including Mason Jar Chocolate Fudge Cake, Caramel Apply Granny, New York-Style Cheesecake and Rockslide Brownie.

“We are very proud that our desserts are all homemade, and not ordered in from the outside,” said Visentin.

The daily Breakfast Buffet is also 100 percent from scratch, and includes eggs made to order, pancakes, French Toast, homemade muffins and pastries, grits, breakfast potatoes, bacon and sausage. Plus,

every day the chef creates a special hot item, such as corned beef, cheese blintzes, hashbrown casserole and chorizo with eggs.

The Breakfast Buffet is just $10.95 ($5.95 for kids), and includes four kinds of juice and coffee. It is served 6 to 10 a.m. weekdays, and 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. on weekends. It is open to hotel guests and the public.

An energetic performance enchants young minds The Hillsborough County Public Library and the Creative Arts Theatre Company presented a live action performance of ‘Wake Up, Brother Bear’ on April 11 at the Keystone Recreation Center, 17928 Gunn Highway in Odessa. The interactive play featured the adventures of Brother Bear and Sister Bear told through stories, songs and dance. Children in attendance were given a prop bag filled with items that allowed the youngsters to be part of the action.

The Creative Arts Theatre Company is the City of Tampa’s professional theater company for young audiences.

‘Out & About 2019’ offers fun for the whole family

The Out & About 2019 Expo invites families to find out more about what’s happening locally, and give kids a chance to have some Easter fun.

The event, presented by The Laker/Lutz News, is set for April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Plantation Palms Golf Club, 23253 Plantation Palms Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes.

“The No. 1 reason why people read The Laker/Lutz News is because they’re looking for things to do locally,” said Diane Kortus, the newspaper’s publisher.

The expo will bring that concept to life — with people representing dozens of companies and organizations coming together to give visitors a chance to learn about local options for children and adults, alike.

Indoor booths will have representatives providing information about summer camp programs, museums, day trips, restaurants, specialty shops and area businesses.

Those visiting also will have a chance to take part in activities, and take home some swag.

Outdoors, kids will have a chance to hunt for Easter eggs at 10 a.m.

Once they find some eggs, kids will be able to exchange their eggs for “goodie bags” loaded with prizes.

But, kids won’t be the only ones having fun searching for eggs.There will be an egg hunt for adults, too, who will also have a chance to win prizes.

Other activities will include bowling and hockey games, as well.

The Easter Bunny is also expected to hop in, to pose for photos with guests throughout the event.

Out and About 2019 Expo WHERE: Plantation Palms Golf Club, 23253 Plantation Palms Blvd., Land O’ Lakes WHEN: April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

COST: Free DETAILS: An Easter-themed expo will grant guests the opportunity to learn about local attractions and summer camps. Games and egg hunts will be offered, as well as snapshots with the Easter Bunny.

Guests are encouraged to park at the Harvester United Methodist Church at 2432 Collier Parkway in Land O’ Lakes. From there, shuttles will run throughout the event, escorting guests to and from the golf club premises.

ALZHEIMER’S STUDY

Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) are looking for participants in a research study — PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) — to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Using a grant from the National Institutes of Health, researchers will conduct a study of up to 1,600 older adults, who will learn a mental exercise routine focused on processing information to target cognitive improvements over time.

There are four study sites in Florida, including one in Dade City. Other sites are in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Lakeland.

Each site will host up to 400 older adults.

The research will consist of a variety of brain games on a computer in which participants are asked to indicate what they saw or heard and solve puzzles.

Each participant will visit a study site three times to learn how to follow the mental regimen and, over the course of three years, they will complete a total of 45 hours of computerized training exercises on their own.

Researchers will monitor for cognitive improvement or signs of decline.

The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Pasco counties are partnering with local area hospitals on a comprehensive survey to better understand and address the health needs of communities in the Greater Tampa Bay area.

The 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment collects data from residents on nutrition, physical activity, access to care, and mental health.

The survey for Pasco County residents is available in English at bit.ly/pascohealth, or in Spanish at bit.ly/pascohealthSpanish.

A link to the survey also is available on participating county health department websites.

Residents can access the survey through April 21.

Sidewalk Stompers is a school activity that encourages safe walking as an option to car line drop-off for students.

Pride Elementary started the program earlier this year and has a gold sneaker trophy for the class with the most participants each week. Fifth-graders can volunteer to be Student Ambassadors and are responsible for tracking all the children who walk or bike to school.

AdventHealth Tampa delivered yards signs with safety messages for display along the schools’ driveways, and a banner for the program.

Anusha Gupta, of Steinbrenner High School, won first place in the Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest, Category 3. In her essay, Gupta discussed the pioneers in science and technology of Hispanic origins, and highlighted female scientists in particular and their achievements in the field. Her essay also discussed the perseverance of both male and female scientists (many of whom were ridiculed for trying), teaching others to believe in themselves and work hard. Gupta was recognized at a brunch at the Columbia Restaurant in March.

Students in east Pasco County who plan to attend vocational schools will have the opportunity for financial assistance through six new scholarships as Wade and Dianna Thomas, of The Thomas Promise Foundation, introduce the Atkins Vocational Scholarship Program.

Funded by the couple and an anonymous donor, the program will provide $1,000 scholarships to three students each in Zephyrhills High School and Pasco High School.

Students must be accepted to a vocational school.

Phishing scammers often send emails or texts posing as a bank or financial institution, to try and bait users into providing their bank account information or click links or attachments that then download malicious software. He pointed out financial institutions never ask for any personal or account information, via email, unsolicited phone calls or text messages.

To protect against phishing, the speaker advised users to do their due diligence before opening and responding to any solicited emails or text messages. Securing and frequently changing passwords is another way to reduce risks.

Said Pepenella: “Make sure you know what you’re opening. Make sure you know what you’re clicking on. If you’re not 100 percent sure on who you’re receiving this information from, don’t click on it.”

The same goes for accepting friend and follower requests, and messages from strangers on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, he said.

“If you don’t know them, don’t accept them as a friend,” he advised.

The speaker mentioned that even the Nigerian scam is still prevalent and has victimized people locally.“It is happening,” he said.

These type of scams involve someone overseas offering a share in a large sum of money or a payment on the condition you help them to transfer money out of their country. While these scams originated in Nigeria, they now come from all over the world.

Stolen money is rarely recovered in these cases, Pepenella said.

He explained:“It’s not uncommon for us today to get complaints from citizens,‘Hey, my life savings is gone.’We find out they became a victim of a Nigerian scam. All a sudden they got an email, the scammer gains the trust of the person…and they just tug on the heartstrings.

“Unfortunately, once that money leaves this country and leaves our borders, we have no jurisdiction over it,” he explained.

The speaker also touched on some alarming figures related to online child sexual solicitation and exploitation.

Reported complaints of suspected child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has increased by more than 10 million nationwide in the past two years alone, he said.

He surmised the rise in tips to NCMEC is partially explained by the recent proliferation of family plans from cellphone carriers.

Pasco Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Sam Pepenella was the featured speaker during a recent East Pasco Networking Group meeting.

Pepenella supervises the agency’s cyber and computer forensic investigations unit.

As a result, the number of digital devices have skyrocketed— and, that, combined with a lack of oversight from parents when it comes to technology, gives youth unfettered access to smartphones, tablets and computers.

The law enforcement official went on to explain that online predators will communicate with adolescents through the chat feature in Xbox and PlayStation video games.

The predators try to develop a relationship with youths, and attempt to gain their trust and confidence with the promise of gifts and money.

From there, Pepenella said, offenders begin a “grooming” process over a period of time, coaxing children to take and send sexually explicit photos and videos of themselves via cellphone.

The Pasco Sheriff’s cyber investigations unit has found children as young as age 9 who were sexually solicited by online predators, Pepenella said. Many of the offenders are in another state, he said.

Said Pepenella,“Unfortunately, in a lot of those cases, they happen out of the area.

They might happen in Missouri or New York or California. What we do is put as much of the case together as possible and ship it off to that jurisdiction.”

Meanwhile, Pepenella urged parents to limit their children’s screen time, use parental controls on digital devices and have access to all passwords.

“Be nosy about what your kids are doing, and do not allow that device out of your sight,” Pepenella said.

Imagine School captures girls soccer title

C

aidee Sumner and Bella Wood were determined to end their middle school soccer careers on a high note.

The eighth-grade team co-captains did just that — leading the Imagine School of Land O’ Lakes Dragons to the 2019 Tampa Charter Athletic League (TCAL) girls soccer championship title.

“It’s our last year here and we wanted to go out as a champion,”Wood said.

The Dragons (9-2) entered the TCAL playoffs as a No. 3 seed, after losing its only regular season contests to Learning Gate Community School and Lutz Preparatory School, respectively.

In each of those defeats, the Dragons were without one of those team captains.

But, with its top two players fully available for the playoffs, the Dragons were poised to claim its second TCAL title in three years.

Sumner’s presence was undoubtedly felt in the games that mattered most.

In the semifinal game against the No. 2 seed Learning Gate, Sumner scored an unheard of four goals in the team’s 5-3 win.

She followed that performance in the title game, scoring the lone goal in the 1-0 win against No. 1 seed Lutz Prep.

It was par for the course for the Dragons forward, who led the team with 42 goals.

Said Sumner,“It’s really nice just to know that my last year here, I get to score the last goal. The ball got up the field by our team for me to score, so I mean it’s a team effort.”

She added: “Every goal I scored, I was thinking for our team,‘I have to score. I’m the scorer. I have to score for us to win.’

Every goal was for this team, which was really nice just to score to know that like we’re going to win, and the team’s behind me.”

As the one-nil score would indicate, Lutz Prep was the Dragons’ toughest test all season long.

The Dragons figured as much heading into the game.

“We were fighting the whole time, until we scored the goal,”Wood said.

“We had that drive just to win,” Sumner said. “I told them (teammates) before, ‘We have to fight hard if we want to win this

game, and we did.We came through.”

The victory added extra meaning as it marked the third straight year the two local charter schools have matched up in the title game. The Dragons lost to the Bolts in last year’s championship, but won in 2017.

“Those are our rivals.We always want to beat them,” Sumner said.

Such familiarity helped the Dragons’ game plan for the Bolts, Sumner said.

She explained: “Over the years, we learned that they had a few of their stronger players we have to watch out for, so we just focused on them, marking them, blocking them, like putting them down so they just didn’t get the ball much.”

The championship put a bow on a season where the Dragons posted seven shutouts and outscored opponents 75 to 9.

It was also a proper sendoff for a quartet of eighth-graders moving on to the high

“I’ll miss everyone because it was so fun,” said Wood, who’s moving on to Land O’ Lakes High School with Sumner. “We were a family, and it’s going to be hard to leave them because we’ve known them for three years.”

The season likewise couldn’t have ended any better for Dragons first-year coach Henry Cheung, who coaches the team alongside Saint Leo Hall of Famer Sam Koleduk.

“Overall, it’s a good season. I am proud with the girls for what they did, and I’m happy my first year coaching I got a championship,” Cheung said.

He added: “The girls are hardworking.

They gave everything they had.”

Coaching chops aside, Cheung credited the team’s talent level and ability to play together as reasons for the on-field success.

“We’re united,” he said, noting the team knows how to play well together.

And, despite the exodus of Sumner, Wood and the others, the coach has high hopes for next season.

“I’m looking forward to next year,” Cheung said.“Under coach Sam (Koleduk) and all the other girls, we’ll do good next year, too.”

In the fall, Rivers finished third overall in the 2018 FHSAA Class 4A state cross-country championship meet, clocking a 15:52.17. He holds the school’s 5K cross-country record, with time of 15:45.

In track, Rivers holds the school record in the 3200 meter run (9:17.22) and currently ranks as one of the state’s top distance runners in that race.

Holy Name Monastery: A tranquil place on a hill

F

unny how a place can be both otherworldly and so much a part of this world. Holy Name Monastery is like that.

It’s a peaceful place where Benedictine Sisters of Florida rise before the birds are up to pray quietly in their chapel, then return for daily Mass and more common prayers throughout the day.

Then, rather than sit idly enjoying their monastic peacefulness, they head out into the world - to a childhood center, a thrift store and food bank, to chamber of commerce meetings and to an aquaponic garden that produces so many vegetables they sell some to Benedetto’s Ristorante, a popular Pasco County restaurant.

The 16 nuns who call this monastery home use the Internet, read newspapers, watch TV news and invite in experts who inform them about political candidates and topics, such as human trafficking.

And, “we definitely vote,’’ says Prioress Roberta Bailey.

Sister Mary Clare Neuhofer, prioress before Sister Roberta, says they are well aware of the stark divisions in our country today.

“Our response is to pray for a just solution and for our leaders, so that they will have the guidance they need to make just decisions for the good of the people,” she says.

Many of the sisters write to lawmakers in Florida and Washington D.C., about peace, justice, the death penalty and other issues that concern them.

They stay busy reaching out to help those in need, whether it be the homeless, the hungry, spiritual searchers, or those who just need a friend.

Because they are a community of sisters, they pool their wages into a common account and are given monthly allowances of $70 for clothes, shoes or whatever they may want to buy.They haven’t worn the restrictive, long black habits since the 1960s, but instead prefer slacks, tops and comfortable shoes, since they always have someplace to go, someone to help.

One sister serves as director at Daystar Hope Center in Dade City, the thrift store and food bank, while four of her sisters and a crew of other volunteers help run the operation.

Two other sisters teach at Sacred Heart Early Childhood Center in nearby Saint Joseph. Another sister is a data analyst at Saint Leo University, across the street from the monastery.Another works at an area assisted living center, where one of their sisters lives.

Others, like Sister Donna — who is famous for her homemade rolls and cookies — feed Habitat for Humanity volunteers at their worksites.

Many of the sisters host monthly music concerts and retreats in a wing of their monastery built in 2017 to meet the demand for retreats.

Asked how many retreats they host a year, Sister Mary Clare laughs and says, “That’s impossible for me to answer.There are too many and too many kinds to keep track.”

Some are for big groups, some for just one person. Some are for Roman Catholics like themselves. Others are nondenominational or for Episcopalians, or members of other faiths. Some retreats are silent, except for meals. Some are not.

Some attendees stay in one of the retreat wing’s 10 hotel-like double rooms at a rate of $45 a night, or $75 for room and meals.

Others go home at night.

The sisters offer spiritual counseling and days of reflection they direct themselves.

Some groups direct their own retreats.

Either way, guests are welcomed to walk around the grounds, sit in the rose garden, take a nature trail or peruse books in the monastery’s library.

Individuals on retreat “immerse themselves into our lives,” says Sister Roberta.

“They eat meals with us, pray with us.”

Sister Mary Clare adds:“If they want to take a nap, they take a nap, and some of them take naps as soon as they get here.”

It’s easy to see why. Cellphones are only allowed in certain places. Signs remind: “Quiet, please, in hallways,’’ and many areas are softly lit or full of comforting natural light.Talk of politics is discouraged at meals, reason enough for some people to flock here on retreat.

Noise and traffic in the outside world can be so intrusive, Sister Roberta says.

When retreaters leave, “They say, ‘I forget until I come here how impossible it is to stop and think about God, and to think about life and how I want to live it.’”

Some visit for other reasons: During Hurricane Irma in September of 2017, the sisters housed 18 people who fled the storm.

Day in and day out, the sisters take turns serving meals, doing the dishes and performing other needed chores. They come from all sorts of backgrounds and range in age.The youngest is in her mid-50s; the oldest was Sister Helen Lange, who was 105 when she died on March 18.

Sister Roberta, who has short, wispy gray hair, blue eyes and a sweet pixie face, was just 16 in 1953 when she moved from DeLand to St. Leo to attend high school at Holy Name Academy, run by the Benedictine Sisters of Florida. She joined them as a nun in 1957, calling her decision “a call from God.” She is proud that she started the first accredited Montessori school in Florida in 1970 and served as principal of St.Anthony Catholic Elementary School in nearby San Antonio for 15 years.

mittee, plus, she is always available to her fellow sisters.

Asked if she has ever not worked, she smiles and says, “No, I’ve always been involved.There’s no retirement when you are a sister.’’

Sister Mary Clare has her own long history of serving as a Benedictine Sister. The middle child of 11 who grew up on a chicken farm in Saint Joseph, she had just graduated from Holy Name Academy in 1956 when she followed her older sister into the monastery. Before that, she hadn’t considered it, but was encouraged to join by friends and family.

“When I entered the monastery, I felt at home and wondered why I hadn’t wanted to do this,” says Sister Mary Clare, who has gray eyes, short reddish brown hair and a ready smile.

Over the years, after college, she taught elementary students in Catholic schools in Jacksonville Beach, Sarasota and North Miami, then ran the campus ministry at Saint Leo College, which is now Saint Leo University.Afterward, she was the college’s acting dean of women, then director of residential life. In 1988, she resigned to take a sabbatical and travel, then returned to the monastery, where she became the treasurer of the community, then the prioress.

Now, she serves on many monastery committees, including music and prayer, she’s an organist, helps with retreats, coordinates hospitality and takes part in other house missions, as well as serving on the local board of Catholic Charities.

The Benedictine Sisters, she says, were not formed to do “any particular work, such as teaching, nursing or working with the poor.We are free to do many types of work.’’

Sister Miriam Cosgrove, who joined the monastery at 18, chose gardening after dedicating more than 40 years to teaching and guidance counseling in elementary schools.

In the nine years since “retirement,” she has developed a prosperous aquaponic garden that produces eggplant, lettuce, squash, cabbage and many other types of vegetables.

She also tends schools of Red Nile tilapia whose waste is changed by “good bacteria”

into nitrates that fertilize her plants.

Schoolchildren sometimes visit and others, too, and the sisters eat her vegetables at mealtime. Sometimes, they even eat her tilapia.

Fit and tan and sporting camouflage cargo shorts, a white top and straw hat, she works hard in her garden, but doesn’t seem to consider it work at all.

“I don’t work. I play,’’ she says, laughing.

“It’s not work if you love it.”

She relishes the peacefulness of her garden and monastic life.

“People who come here on retreat say how peaceful it is. And, when they leave, they say,‘This is exactly what I needed. I’ll be back.’”

Sister Tracey Adams, whose brown eyes are the same color as her hair, calls herself “a baby sister,” since she only joined the sisters last June. She came to the monastery from St. Petersburg, where she was a hospice nurse.

She says she had health problems and felt a desire to live simply, so after a road trip alone that took her to 22 states, she stopped by the monastery, which she heard about from her priest back home.

“I was on a mission to find what God wanted for the next portion of my life, she says.

She stayed with them one night, then another.Then, returned every month for a year.

“It was always hard to leave,” she says. So she became a volunteer, then an affiliate, then a postulate and now she’s a novice.

“I found a lot of peace here,” she says.

She uses her nursing skills, takes care of the rose bushes “and I love to wash dishes, so I do that,” she laughs. She’s on the peace and justice and hospitality committees, and spends some of her time reading and studying.

“Like the Army, we try to be all we can be,” she says.“I may not be able to help’’ people on the other side of the globe.“But, I’m praying for them.’’

The Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa, will offer a free month’s supply of heartworm prevention with every dog adoption during the month of April, which is also Heartworm Awareness Month.

HELP CONSERVE TORTOISES

Gopher tortoises are found in all 67 Florida counties, but need plenty of sandy, sunny habitats with an open tree canopy to thrive and survive.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) says anyone can help biologists with gopher tortoise research by using the gopher tortoise app to report sightings and observations of the species.

The FWC’s wildlife management area system, along with other public lands such as state forests and parks, provide habitat for gopher tortoises.

State and local government, nonprofits, and private landowners also work with the FWC to help conserve and restore the species’ habitat.

Gopher tortoises are a protected species.

It is illegal to harm the tortoise, its eggs or its burrows. It also is against the law to relocate a tortoise without a permit, or to possess a tortoise, its eggs, or any parts of a tortoise.

If you see a gopher tortoise crossing a road, you may pick it up and place it in a safe location along the roadside in the direction it was heading, but only do so if it is safe.

SEA TURTLE HAS A NEW NAME

Last month, The Florida Aquarium and Florida Blue sought out the public’s help to choose a name for the star of the Aquarium’s Heart of the Sea exhibit — a juvenile male loggerhead sea turtle.The turtle was unable to be returned to the wild due to an injury.

Hillsborough County elementary school students suggested names, and the public was asked to weigh in on their favorite.

After thousands of votes, Loggerhead Sea Turtle No. 263 now has the forever name of Shelldon.

The name was submitted by fifth-graders in Michael Schmitt’s class at Kimbell Elementary School. The class will receive a field trip to The Florida Aquarium to meet Shelldon in person.

WELBILT JOINS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

WORK UNDERWAY TO MERGE CHAMBERS

Joel Horn, executive vice president of Welbilt Inc., has joined the Pasco Economic Development Council Inc.’s board of directors, according to a Pasco EDC news release.

Welbilt Inc., is a commercial food service equipment manufacturer.

It recently invested in the Pasco EDC, and at its level of investment it receives a seat on the EDC’s board.The company appointed Horn to fill the role.

Due diligence efforts have been completed for the merger of the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce and the West Pasco Chamber of Commerce, with the expected merger to become effective on July 1.

Work is underway to make the organizational changes necessary to operate as a single chamber, including the selection of a new name.

Jersey Mike’s Subs just wrapped up its ninth annual “Month of Giving,” raising more than $7.3 million to help charitable causes across the country.
