several benefits, including reduced vehicle noise, cleaner emissions and cost efficiency. “We’ve tried to be good stewards of our natural resources,” said Kurt Browning, the district’s superintendent. Each bus is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 20,000 pounds a year, school officials said. Compared to clean diesel buses, they said the CNG buses would produce 13 percent less greenhouse gas, 95 percent less nitrogen oxide and 80 percent less hydrocarbon. The CNG station can fuel a bus within 3 minutes and can pump out the equivalent of more than 10,500 gasoline gallons a day. It also is a state-of-the-art facility with more than 10,000 linear feet of electrical conduit buried underground. More than 50 cubic yards of concrete encase those conduits; and, each CNG storage vessel weighs more than 6,500 pounds.All of the compression equipment was American-manufactured. The talent was endless. The applause was, too. Special needs students from seven Pasco County schools displayed their unique skills on May 17 before more than 100 parents, peers and school faculty. The eighth annual Showcase for Exceptional Talent was held at the Wesley Chapel High School Center for the Arts auditorium. From dancing and singing/duets, to lipsyncing and comedy skits, there was no shortage of fun and entertainment. The two-hour show featured more than 30 routines from dozens of exceptional student education (ESE) students. Performers hailed from Wesley Chapel, Ridgewood, Wiregrass Ranch and Zephyrhills high schools; Seven Springs and Weightman middle schools; and,Watergrass Elementary. On the main stage, students exhibited passion and confidence with each act. The crowd responded with roaring applause and enthusiastic cheers. Everyone seemed to be sharing an enjoyable time. Wiregrass Ranch’s Nicholas Jones enlivened the audience as he jammed away at his guitar during a solo performance of “Wherever I May Roam” by Metallica. Wesley Chapel High’s Regan Black left observers awestruck when she belted out the catchy sing-along tune of “Don’t Worry About a Thing” by Tori Kelly. Acts such as a SpongeBob SquarePants reenactment and roaming “Comedy Chickens” generated hearty laughs.

Fleet of school buses to use alternative fuel By Kathy Steele

Pasco County Schools is making history with a new, fast-fill station and a fleet of buses that runs on alternative fuel. The school district, in partnership with Integral Energy and Clearwater Gas System, is the first in Florida to own and operate a compressed natural gas (CNG) station to fuel its growing fleet of CNG buses. By the end of the 2018 school year, school officials estimate the district will own 65 buses that operate on natural gas, rather than diesel or gasoline. The fueling station, along with a new bus garage, is on about 24 acres at 13101 Interlaken Road in Odessa. School officials, school board members and representatives with Integral Energy and Clearwater Gas celebrated the occasion with a ribbon cutting on May 16. Later that night, we went to the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud. The dinner was a four-course family style feast. It was all you can eat. The show was excellent and had some cute moments. This was an action-packed show, where half of the audience was a Hatfield and the other half was a McCoy. So we would scream and yell when our particular family was performing. The following day, we took a drive through Cades Cove.This is an 11-mile loop that follows many of the curves and courses that settlers forged years ago. We saw wildlife, including wild turkeys and deer. And, we were able to experience the tranquil beauty of the trails, wildlife and scenery once you got out of your car at one of the many turn-offs. We left the cove after several hours, and in the early afternoon, we went to the Smoky Mountain Opry. Here, we saw a great variety show with

more comedians, jugglers and specialty acts. The special effects added to the show, as they were magnificent. Several of the acts involved being suspended from the ceiling in the center of the venue. Many dancers performed on the stage. Our trip was almost at a close, but we still had one more show to see.The name of the show was “Sweet Fanny Adams,” located in Gatlinburg. The original shows are quick-witted sensations, filled with the broadest of humor and the silliest of slapstick. There was loads of audience participation, with lively music and top-notch performers.There was a sing-a-long and, believe me, you better be singing, as everyone was being watched. The show was two hours and was a pure delight. Well, as they say, all good things must come to an end — so, on April 29, we took our leave.

‘Cow Palace’ attracted music greats Knowing Your History By Doug Sanders

he block structure was built in 1957, without heat or air conditioning, according to records kept by the Pasco County Property Appraiser’s Office. It was located in Carver Heights, a predominantly black neighborhood where many people lived hard-scrabble lives. And, during the next 20 years, the building attracted performers who would become some of the biggest names in soul-blues and R&B music. Each of those musicians would travel down Bull Road — still a dirt lane southeast of Dade City. They would go past Ferguson Lake to make their way to the stage, inside the block structure. It was a venue with a spacious dance floor and ornate Spanish-tiled bar. And, that’s where bar-goers who could get rowdy, had the chance to see performances by B.B. King or Ray Charles. More often than not, people could hear the loud music outside as they passed the open pastures, as they did on the night that James Brown played. Despite its remote location and wild weekends, this block structure became a juke joint variously known as “Rabbit’s Place,” “Jake's Lakeside Tavern” and the “Cow Palace.” It was part of the so-called “Chitlin’ Circuit,” which the National Public Radio defines as “a touring circuit that provided employment for hundreds of black musicians and brought about the birth of Rock ’n’ Roll.” Glenn Thompson, secretary of the Pasco County Historical Society, said the circuit’s name “derives from the soul food item chitterling” which is made from stewed pig intestines. Thompson is a big fan of the local Chitlin’ Circuit Preservation Society, co-founded by

Scott Place, which is seeking funding to restore and save one of Florida’s historic blues clubs. “We want to be like the Bradfordville Blues Club in Tallahassee,” Place said. That juke joint was shuttered for nearly 20 years before it reopened in the 1990s. Place also points to other success stories on the old Chitlin’ Circuit, such as the Jackson

House in Tampa, the Manhattan Casino in St. Petersburg and the Cotton Club in Gainesville. Place, a Dade City blues musician who performs under the name "Howlin' Buzz," hopes future generations will have a chance to know more about the Cow Palace and its historic links to stars like King, a relatively unknown artist who brought a Chitlin' Circuit

tour to the Cow Palace in the late 1950s. Buddy Guy played at the Cow Palace early in his career and was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame by Eric Clapton and B.B. King on March 14, 2005. Writing on his Facebook page, Guy said: “The tone (B.B. King) got out of that guitar, the way he shook his left wrist, the way he squeezed the strings…Man, he came out with that, and it was all new to the whole guitarplayin’ world.” The Cow Palace attracted stars and fans to a very poor neighborhood. "There was nothing like that anywhere in Tampa Bay," recalled George Romagnoli, in a news report published 25 years ago. First subdivided in 1946 by Stanley Cochrane, the subdivision where the Cow Palace sits likely was named after the renowned botanist George Washington Carver, according to Bill Dayton, a member and former chairman of the Dade City Historic Preservation Advisory Board. "Maybe he had an admiration for Carver,” Dayton told The St. Petersburg Times in 1998. "Or maybe he just thought it was an appropriate name for a black subdivision," Dayton added. No regularly hosted events have been held at the Cow Palace since the mid-1970s, but a jam session there two years ago drew approximately 100 musicians and guests. “We found out there was no commercial zoning, and that’s what we need for live entertainment in the future,” Place said. Even with rezoning issues and the challenges of restoration, Place believes people would stand in line to enter the Cow Palace as they did 50 years ago. “They would admit as many people as possible (back then). Home buying can be overwhelming, and perhaps a bit intimidating, if you aren’t familiar with the terminology. To help aspiring homeowners gain confidence in the home buying process, experts at Freddie Mac are sharing a guide with some top terms they will hear. • Pre-approval letter. A letter from your lender telling you how much home you can afford, and the maximum amount you are qualified to borrow. Having a pre-approval letter while shopping can help you move faster, and with greater confidence, in competitive markets. • Appraisal. After you make an offer on a home, your lender will order an appraisal to get a professional opinion on its value. This is a necessary step in getting financing secured, as it validates the worth to you and your lender. • Closing costs. In addition to a home’s price, a buyer must pay “closing costs.” This is the cost to complete the real estate transaction. This includes points, taxes, title insurance, financing costs, items that must be prepaid or escrowed and other costs. Closing costs are generally two to five percent of your home purchase price. • Escrow. The holding of money or documents by a neutral third party before closing. Escrow can also refer to an account held by the lender or servicer into which a homeowner pays taxes and insurance.

• Mortgage rate. The interest rate you pay to borrow money for your house. The lower the rate, the low the mortgage payment. • Fixed-rate mortgages. A mortgage with an interest rate that doesn’t change during the term of the loan. This is typically 15 or 30 years. • APR. The annual percentage rate, commonly referred to as “APR,” is a broader measure of your cost for borrowing money and includes the interest rate, points, broker fees and other credit charges you’ll be required to pay. Because these costs are rolled in together, the APR is usually higher than your interest rate. • Credit Score. A number ranging from 350 to 800 based on an analysis of your credit files. Your score plays a significant role when securing a mortgage, as it helps lenders determine the likelihood that you’ll repay future debts. The higher your score, the more options you’ll have, including lower interest rates. • Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI). If you make a down payment of less than 20 percent on your conventional loan, your lender will require PMI. PMI serves as an added insurance policy protecting the lender if you’re unable to pay your mortgage. It often can be cancelled from your payment once you reach 20 percent equity in your home. Sales are ‘sizzling’ at Connerton

he excitement continues at Connerton, a master planned community in Land O’ Lakes, after an exceptionally strong showing in April, during the 2017 Tampa Bay Parade of Homes. Gulfside celebrates volunteers In honor of National Volunteer Week, Gulfside Hospice honored its 193 patient-care volunteers, along with 200 thrift shop volunteers, throughout the county. The Pasco County Chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) offers two types of support group meetings each month. Marty Sullivan, an 83-year-old Korean War veteran, donned a cap and gown to stand with the members of the Joe E. Newsome High School Class of 2017 on May 19. Sullivan had just completed his sophomore year at a Boston high school in 1951 when he walked into a U.S. Navy recruitment center to sign up for the Korean War. Jobs, a family and a retirement move to Hillsborough County followed in the years after he left the service. Sullivan learned through his volunteer work at the Hillsborough County Veterans Park and Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins Jr. Veterans Museum that he qualified for a high school diploma. the traffic to flow better,” said John McShaffrey, a transportation department spokesman.“We’ve already seen that.” Part of the project is to redesign the interchange. In March, FDOT opened a loop ramp for westbound traffic on State Road 52, heading south on I-75. Ramp intersections will have traffic signals to aid motorists who are entering and exiting I-75. In 2016, southbound traffic onto I-75 from State Road 52 logged about 8,300 vehicles per day. Northbound there were about 3,000 vehicles a day, according to FDOT data on Annual Average Daily Traffic counts.

The same traffic report showed about 60,000 vehicles per day traveling I-75 between County Road 54 and State Road 52; and 40,000 per day between State Road 52 and County Road 41. The FDOT project will widen about 7 miles of I-75 from four lanes to six lanes, with three lanes in each direction. The work stretches from north of County Road 54 to north of State Road 52. About 1 ½ miles of State Road 52 will be widened from two lanes to six lanes, from west of Old Pasco Road to east of Corporate Lake Boulevard. In addition, frontage roads will be built on the northbound and southbound sides of State Road 52, west of I-75. The project also includes on-street bicycle lanes and 10-foot sidewalks.

They finally did it. On May 20, the Land O’ Lakes High Gators unseated powerhouse Plantation American Heritage 3-1, claiming the Class 6A Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSSA) softball championship at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach. The achievement marks the first fastpitch title for Land O’Lakes (29-3) and the first for a Pasco County program since Ridgewood High won in 1992. Making the victory even sweeter: The Gators downed the same team that eliminated them in last year’s state semifinals. And, it wasn’t the first time this postseason Land O’ Lakes exacted revenge. The Gators twice beat Wesley Chapel High School — in districts and regionals —after the Wildcats bested them during an April 4 regular season game (2-0 loss). Besides payback, the championship shows the Gators — in recent years one of the region’s premier softball program — can dethrone a state dynasty; American Heritage (25-4) was making its fourth straight championship game appearance and was trying to win its eighth title overall. Likewise impressive, the Gators won in comeback fashion. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Land O’Lakes found timely hitting —base hits by Callie Turner and Tia Williams — and benefitted from Patriot mistakes — hit by pitch, wild pitch— to build the lead for good. Meanwhile,Turner, the team’s sophomore ace, kept the game within reach from the outset, pitching like she has all season long. The University of Tennessee commit fired a complete game, allowing just five hits and striking out eight against a potent Patriots lineup (.447 team average, 24 home runs). The Gators’ championship win culminated a pair of close playoff games. The day before, on May 19, Land O’ Lakes

For followers of Land O’ Lakes varsity softball, the championship isn’t an utter shock. But, it’s likely eye-opening after last year’s graduation of Shannon Saile, one of the program’s all-time great pitchers. Saile — now a freshman standout at Florida International University — amassed 517 strikeouts and a career 1.76 ERA in four seasons. She also compiled 41 wins, 31 com-

plete games, 11 shutouts and five no-hitters in her prep career. Moreover, Gators head coach Mitch Wilkins this season had to replace two key bats in then-seniors Tayler Holt (.347 average) and Kendall Tipton (.311 average). No matter. Projecting forward, a state title repeat in 2018 isn’t out of the question. Armed with Turner (0.21 ERA, 249 strikeouts) and a budding star in sophomore Shelby Westbrook (2.10 ERA, 58 strikeouts in 43.1 innings), pitching won’t be an issue.

Hitting shouldn’t be a problem, either. The Gators do lose centerfielder Jessie McCallister (.358 average, 17 RBIs) and outfielder Lexi Turner (.293 average, 19 RBIs). But, the team returns just about everyone else, including sluggers Tia Williams (.444 average, 24 RBIs),Ashley Smith (.390 average, four home runs, 30 RBIs) and Brianna Lindner (.352 average, two home runs, 22 RBIs). Not to be overlooked, Wilkins’ mentoring should provide a steadying force, too. After a 13-13 mark in 2014, the team has since gone a combined 80-9 under Wilkins.

Pantry provides food for those in need By B.C. Manion

he Helping Hands Choice Food Pantry at Atonement Lutheran Church of Wesley Chapel began more than a decade ago with a simple goal — to feed the hungry. Carl Haberland came up with the idea. “He had this dream that he was supposed to feed people in need,” said Carla Haberland, who has led the church’s food pantry efforts since her husband’s death in 2011. “It started out with a Christmas Eve dinner, between services, for the community, and baskets of food,” she recalled. That was in 2006. When the church began feeding the hungry, it still had a day care, so it had limited amount of space, Haberland said. But, when the day care closed, the Helping Hands food pantry opened, distributing food every Wednesday to those in need. “It started out with like 10, 20 families,” the food pantry director said. “It didn’t take long to figure out that we couldn’t afford to keep buying the food at Save-A-Lot,” she said. The pantry signed up with what was then Suncoast Harvest in Land O’ Lakes. There is no longer a food bank there and the organization is now called Feeding Tampa Bay. B.C. Dimmitt Automotive Group broke ground May 22 on a new, state-of-the-art Audi dealership, at 2500 Lajuana Blvd., in Wesley Chapel, according to a news release from the company. The luxury, 40,000-square-foot car dealership is described as Audi’s “most innovative retail experience,” with open-area shopping in a “modern art” building. Audi Wesley Chapel is expected to open in fall 2017.

Women-n-Charge awarded two $1,000 grants to Anna Marie Orlando, of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office; and Barbara Keithly, owner of Magnolia Manor Assisted Living, according to a news release from the organization. The group’s mission is to support and assist professional women in managing businesses more effectively. Orlando is a volunteer chaplain at the sheriff’s office and coordinator of the annual Light Up the Night Human Trafficking Awareness Concert Event. She plans to use

the grant to hire an event coordinator to help with the event, and give others more time to focus on the mission to eradicate human trafficking. Keithly provides care to 53 residents at Magnolia Manor. The grant will help purchase new kitchen equipment, including a convection oven, soda machine and steam table.
