At 6:15 a.m., the first applicant showed up at USF Embassy Suites in Tampa, ready to hand out resumes and secure a job at the Tampa Premium Outlets. The sight brought a smile to Stacey Nance. “I think this is a true testament of what the entire day is going to be,” said Nance, the outlet mall’s general manager. As the hours passed, the crowd swelled by hundreds as job seekers waited outside the hotel’s ballroom for the doors to open at 10 a.m., for the Tampa Premium Outlets Job Fair. By the time the doors closed — at 7 p.m. — mall representatives estimated more than 3,000 people had dropped off resumes and met with recruiters from the nearly 70 shops that participated in the job fair. More than 800 jobs were on the line for what is the most anticipated mall opening in Pasco County in years. The outdoor mall, with 110 brand name outlet stores, is expected to be a shopping mecca that will be a regional attraction on what was once pasture land, off State Road 56, near an Interstate 75 interchange. The grand opening is a weekend celebration from Oct. 29 through Nov. 1. Details on special events and celebrity appearances are pending. But on Aug. 27, the focus was on employment opportunities. Katy Gabriel came up with the idea for Squirrely Scrolls after a frustrating office experience with her son, Christian. He now helps design the activities, which come in rain forest and Caribbean themes.

A child’s trip to a doctor’s office often includes anxiety, frustration and tears. And if the child refuses to behave, that can be the parent’s reaction as well. “I’ve been exposed to the long wait times, and the distress of the patients and the parents while they’re waiting for the doctor,” said Wesley Chapel resident Katy Gabriel. Gabriel has experienced that distress from both sides of the pediatric office. As a mother, she knows what it’s like to wait with upset or bored children who don’t want to be there in the first place. And as a nurse for more than 20 years, she’s seen pediatric doctors try to heal unhappy children and deal with unhappy families. It’s a setting that could use a little creativity and fun. And, Gabriel has invented something she thinks will provide just that. Her company, Squirrely Scrolls, provides a different type of exam table paper, the crinkly sheets that get replaced with each new patient. Normally a simple white, Gabriel’s paper includes games, puzzles and See OFFICE, page 7A

Fish fry and Florida’s history mix on Sept. 11 By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

The Pioneer Florida Museum & Village, 15602 Pioneer Museum Road in Dade City, is situated on 16 acres and has an old schoolhouse, church and general store as part of its attractions. Now, it would like more people to come and see what it has to offer. “One of the issues that we have here is that a lot of people don’t know about the museum,” said Brenda Minton, event coordinator for the museum.“It’s kind of like Dade City’s best kept secret.” Minton hopes the secret will be out with the museum’s Old-Fashioned Family Style Fish Fry, which will take place Sept. 11 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. The Kiwanis Club of Dade City is cosponsoring the event. The fish fry replaces their Pioneer Days event in an effort to offer something new to the community. It includes live music by Those Unscrupulous Sunspots, a six-piece band that performs covers of rock and roll classics from The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Neil Young, as well as playing original tunes. In addition to the fish, dinner includes items such as cheese grits, hushpuppies, cole slaw and baked beans. Food can be ordered to go, and is available by delivery to businesses that order 10 or more dinners during that time. The museum hopes most people will choose to eat there and take a fresh look at the area, and the dozen or so buildings that

have been collected over its history. The Pioneer Florida Museum began at the Pasco County Fairgrounds before moving to its current location more than 40 years ago. Many of the buildings were renovated and relocated to their new home, and they come from different parts of the state. A shoe repair shop from downtown Dade City shares the grounds with a steam engine from Trilby, and a Lacoochee school and general store. There’s also a cane syrup mill, a quilt building and a barn. Those Unscrupulous Sunspots will be performing on the front porch of another structure, the Overstreet House, which is a

during the event. Visitors who stay to eat will enjoy free lemonade and iced tea as well. The museum’s goal is to sell 500 tickets for the event, and Minton said feedback has been good so far. “It’s kind of bringing the community together for a fun afternoon and also showing off the museum,” she said. “I think we’re going to have a nice crowd.” Tickets for the fish fry are $8 and can be purchased at the museum, the Dade City Chamber of Commerce or by calling (352) 206-8889. two-story farm home made of pine. The main museum features a sample bedroom, doctor’s office and dentist’s office. There are also authentic examples of clothes, tools, toys, pottery and other artifacts from Florida’s pioneer era that began in the 1800s. Minton believes that people will be interested in returning once they see the history on display. Some come back for more than a tour, she said. The Enterprise Church, built in 1878 and replaced in 1903, is still available for weddings. In addition to the music, the museum will set up picnic tables and hold games

Students are in a genetics class in Kirk Hall, a new academic building at Saint Leo University that bears the name of the university’s former president Dr. Arthur F. Kirk Jr., and his family.

Saint Leo University students and faculty started a new school year on Aug. 25, and they began using the newest academic building on the university’s Dade City campus. The building, Kirk Hall, is named in honor of Dr. Arthur F. Kirk Jr., president emeritus, and his family. The building complements the university’s School of Business building, just across the campus’ central walkway. Kirk Hall has classrooms equipped with modern teaching technology, faculty offices,

and specialized teaching environments for students in the School of Arts and Sciences, and the School of Education and Social Services. There are also some student support areas in Kirk Hall, including the Learning Resource Center, which provides tutoring and other means of academic assistance, and the First Year Experience program, which provides counseling and programming to help freshmen become acclimated to university life. There are also plenty of areas where students sit and read, or meet in small groups, between classes.

Festival shares joys of flight By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

People who are drawn to hot air balloons and aircraft enthusiasts will have plenty to see and do at Festival of Flight 2015. The event, which will take place from Sept. 11 through Sept. 13 at Tampa North Flight Center, features hot air balloon rides, tethered balloon rides, two balloon glows, two balloon launches, helicopters, planes, live music, a specialty car show and more. Admission is free and parking is $5. The festival expects to have 30 balloons coming from Florida, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, said Jessica Warren, the festival director. There may be even a balloon coming in from Colorado, she said. Warren also expects about 30 other aircraft: biplanes, war birds, a glider, Cessna and others. “We have a lot of planes coming in from Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, New Smyrna Beach,” Warren said. The festival is advertised through airports, to let pilots know what is happening. “A lot of the Facebook advertising that we do targets aviation enthusiasts. There are different clubs on there that we’ve shared the information with, to let them know that it’s happening,” she said. The festival also will have kites, radiocontrolled aircraft, food vendors and entertainment. There are some new features at the festival, too. “We have bounce houses this year, which we didn’t have in years past.We have the balls that walk on water. You get inside of them and you walk,” Warren said. And, she added,“We’re trying to get a gyrosphere.” This year’s food vendors include Happy Hangar Café, Salsa Slow Smoked BBQ, Collins Concessions, Heavenly Snow – New Orleans, The Bacon Boss Food Truck, Jimmy’s Slider Food Truck, Kona Ice of Wesley Chapel and Churroland. There’s also going to be a car show, featuring BMWs and exotic cars. Helicopter rides start at $25 and tethered balloon rides are $10. The hot air balloon rides are sold out, but a waiting list is being kept. The hot air balloon rides are $189. There also will be a Quilt of Valor presentation on Friday night, to honor veterans who served in a war zone. It’s a special presentation, Warren said. “You have to be nominated, and you only receive one in a lifetime.” All together there are 56 vendors, 11

A hefty dose of rain last year put a damper on attendance at the second annual Festival of Flight, but Jessica Warren, the festival director, is hoping that won’t be the case this year. Shown here, the propeller of a Navy training plane flown in by Warbird Adventures.

bands, 30 balloon pilots and at least 30 airplane pilots. “We have about 20 volunteers coming from Grow Life Church. We have about 30 volunteers from the Civil Air Patrol,” Warren said. Parking will be at the Compark 75 property, which is next door to the airport and shuttle service will be provided. When the event started three years ago, Warren knew it would grow.

And, it is attracting widespread interest. “We have people flying in just for the festival all of the way from Puerto Rico, Maryland, New York. I have people who have called me from all over the United States. These are people who are just coming to see the balloons,”Warren said. “We still want to kind of keep it in the small-town feel that Wesley Chapel, is. But just like Wesley Chapel is growing, we are growing, too,”Warren said.

Enrollment growth in Pasco highest since recession By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Drive through Pasco County and it’s easy to see the signs of growth. New houses are popping up in subdivisions. New apartment complexes are being built, and land is being cleared for more development. And now that school is back in session, some of that growth is beginning to show up in classrooms, too. For the first time since 2007, the enrollment figures for the first day of school in Pasco County Schools increased by more than 1,000 students compared to the first day of school during the previous year. Countywide, the district’s enrollment was 66,059, on the first day of classes, not counting four schools that had not yet submitted enrollment figures. District schools gained a total of 1,138 students, while charter schools operating in the county picked up 441 — bringing the total to 1,579. The increased enrollment exceeded the district’s expectations. Officials had projected an increase of 1,490. Elementary schools experienced the biggest gain, picking up 672 more than last year. Middle schools experienced a slight decline, tallying seven fewer students than the previous year, and high schools gained 526. The district’s education centers also saw a slight decrease, dropping by 53 students. Some schools experienced increases, while others saw declines across The Laker/Lutz News coverage area. The opening of Sanders Memorial STEAM Magnet School, with 718 students, in Land O’ Lakes had an impact on enrollments at several area schools. Connerton Elementary School’s first day enrollment was 770, down from last year’s first-day count of 890. Oakstead Elementary also experienced a decline from its enrollment of 1,123 on the first day of school last year, compared with

1,000 this year. Pine View Elementary, also in Land O’ Lakes, reported an opening day enrollment of 530, down 100 students from the prior year. Lake Myrtle Elementary, also located in Land O’ Lakes, had a decline of 73 students, going from 639 last year to 566 this year. Denham Oaks Elementary, in Lutz, saw its enrollment drop by 56 students, going from 669 last year to 613 this year. Other schools experienced enrollment declines as Quail Hollow Elementary reopened in Wesley Chapel, with 380 students on its first day. Watergrass Elementary School’s first-day enrollment of 592 reflects a decrease of 114 students from its first-day figure last year. Wesley Chapel Elementary’s first-day enrollment dropped by 191 students, as compared to last year. Two elementary schools reported enrollment gains of 50 students or more. Sand Pine Elementary, in Wesley Chapel, increased by 51 students and Woodland Elementary, in Zephyrhills, experienced an uptick of 83 students. Most of the middle schools in the central and east portions of Pasco County saw changes that were within 25 students of last year, plus or minus. Pine View Middle School was the only school that experiencing a bigger change. Its first-day enrollment decreased by 65 students, compared to last year. Among high schools in central and east Pasco, those charting the largest gains were Land O’ Lakes High, with an increase of 155 students, Zephyrhills High, with a boost of 119 students, and Sunlake High, with an uptick of 78 students. Charter schools in the newspaper’s coverage area also reported gains. Academy at the Farm picked up 119 students, Imagine School in Land O’ Lakes reported 50 additional students, and Countryside Montessori, also in Land O’ Lakes, increased its first-day enrollment by 29.

CHARTER, from page 1A Under that scenario, commissioners would not have been able to amend the charter document and voters would have the final say. Commissioners resisted that approach, instead opting for a nonbinding panel which had the option of recommending a charter or not. If the panel had approved a charter with a super-majority vote, commissioners had said they would present the matter to voters, without change, in a 2016 referendum. But for a majority on the panel, the case for a charter didn’t pass muster despite assertions that other counties with charters were better off than Pasco. “Where is this fantasy, premier, preeminent county? asked panel member Chuck Grey. “What are we aspiring to be? Tell me a county we’re aspiring to be like. Delegation members repeatedly hit on the theme of voter accountability and empowering voters. “There’s nothing bad when we talk about accountability, Burgess said.“I believe a lot in autonomy. However, as a former Zephyrhills’ mayor, Burgess had one caveat, if a charter were adopted. “I would prefer that we preserve local governments’ ability to determine their own destiny, he said. Simpson dismissed the notion of an elected county mayor, an idea initially raised by Corcoran when he presented the charter idea to Pasco County commissioners. “My personal opinion is that would be a dreadful idea, he said. He did, however, find single member districts “not a bad idea. Corcoran urged the committee to include ideas they liked and let others alone. “If the county mayor is controversial, chuck it out the window, he said. Committee members Randy Maggard and Mike Ryan felt the committee’s vote

OFFICE, from page 1A coloring opportunities. With a series of six panels that repeat throughout the roll, the exam table becomes an activity center for patients and their siblings. “When the doctor comes in, not only are the kids occupied and entertained, they’re in better moods. and it also keeps them on the table where the doctor wants them, Gabriel said. The inspiration for the product came from her family. When her 10-year-old son, Christian, sustained a football injury, he had to sit in the room while the office dealt with a malfunctioning x-ray machine. “It took forever. It was driving me crazy. I was peeking out the door waiting for the doctor to come, recalled Christian, now 11 and an assistant in designing the Squirrely Scrolls. After testing out his mother’s idea, he agrees it would make long waits more tolerable and improve the exam room setting. While there are obvious benefits for the patients, the advantages for the office are just as significant, Gabriel said. Calmer, happier children make for an improved office visit experience, which improves patient satisfaction and client retention. Plus, the crayons are easy to clean, and the doctor can tear off more sheets, as needed. And, since the children want to be on the table, exams can be completed more efficiently and with less negativity. More than 50 doctors — working in around two dozen offices — currently use Squirrely Scrolls in their exam rooms, Gabriel said, and there have been frequent re-orders. The addition of activities has benefits

was premature, and wanted to explore individual items, such as term limits and single member districts. “We have not looked at all the issues in any depth to know right now, said Ryan. During public comment, only one speaker supported a charter. “We have seen many county commissioners who have stayed on an enormously long time, said New Port Richey resident Hugh Townsend. “I think turnover would be a good idea. Former Pasco County Commissioner Pat Mulieri said many unanswered questions remained about why Corcoran and others were pursuing a charter. “You don’t want turmoil in Pasco County, she said. “These changes could cause turmoil with government, when this is a time for stability with our economic growth. Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano wondered why all the focus was on accountability at the local level. “It concerns me that those who just left Tallahassee and didn’t do what they needed to are concerned about accountability, he said. Legislators recently ended a special session to redraw the state’s district maps under order from the Florida Supreme Court. They recessed without agreeing on a map, making it likely that the court will redraw the map. At least for now, the charter issue in Pasco seems moot. A grassroots group, the Pasco County Citizens Charter Coalition, has expressed interest in a petition drive to collect 45,000 signatures required by state law to establish the charter commission that Corcoran wanted. Coalition members had anticipated that Corcoran would partner with them. However, the lawmaker said he had no plans to join in their efforts. “We’ll see. I’ll keep working for ways to make all levels of government accountable, Corcoran said.

MALL, from page 1A

The job fair day brought out an eager pool of applicants, freshly dressed to step right into their hoped-for new jobs. Land O’ Lakes resident Javier Perez said he wants to pursue an art degree at the Savannah College of Art and Design. A fulltime mall job could make that dream happen. “I’m going to apply to as many stores as I can, he said, noting he sought advice on his resume from his mother, who works as a counselor. Wesley Chapel resident Cherish Suddith is a pharmacy supervisor for a health care company. She hopes to work nights and weekends at her favorite store — Vera Bradley. “I’m a fan, said Suddith, who is a University of Phoenix graduate. And she added,“I’m used to working lots of hours. She is excited to see the mall move into the area, and looking to her future. “I think it’s a good thing. It will drive the market, she said. “I’m looking to purchase a home soon. I think it (the mall) was needed. It was a battle at times to find a place to fill out an application. People sat in rows of chairs and hunched over countertops. Some elbowed their way to get wall space. Matthew Holleran plopped to the floor by the registration tables. The recent Wesley High School graduate works seasonally as a referee in youth lacrosse. But, his mother thought it was a good idea for him to look for full-time work, as he plans for college. Most of his applications were for jobs at sports stores. “I don’t want to do something I’m not interested in, Holleran said. Wesley Chapel resident Giovanni Velasquez was looking for part-time work, also preferably at a sports store. “I’m big into sports, said Velasquez, who is a junior at the University of South Florida. Gerardo Gonzalez moved from Chicago to Wesley Chapel about a year ago. The Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber of Commerce and the Career Center at PascoHernando State College coordinated the event. The chamber hosted a breakfast for recruiters and store representatives, and staffed a hospitality room, too. Nearly a dozen volunteers wore bright orange T-shirts bearing the message: “Let’s put our cities on the map. “It’s happening. It’s on, said Hope Allen, the chamber’s executive director. “We had a packed room. It’s very exciting to be here. Jobs are out there, said Kenneth Russ, vice president of business services at PHSC. “The economy is growing by leaps and bounds, he said, noting applicants have to apply with the right skills at the right time. The college assisted with job postings on the virtual job fair site, fielded phone calls from prospective applicants, and offered help with resumes. “We got a surge this morning, he said. “People are going to the website. The job fair hours at Embassy Suites were set to end at 7 p.m., to accommodate people who have jobs. “There will be people who want a better job, Russ said. “Everyone is always looking for a better job and higher wages. Most applicants were expected to come from Hillsborough, Hernando and Pasco counties. Jenny Badger lives in Bay City and works for a Dade City company that cleans government buildings at night. But she’d like extra income, and has more time to work now that her son is in school. She hoped to get at job at the Nike Factory Outlet. “I just shop there a lot, she said. That kind of passion can be a plus, according to a check-off sheet on the Ralph Lauren table. Recruiters looked for applicants that smiled, made eye contact and had a passion for the brand. Nikia Stewart had her sights set on Michael Kors. She had the passion. “I just love this brand, she said. “It’s classic but comfortable. It’s not over the top, like a lot of brands. Stewart and her family moved from New York to Land O’ Lakes about eight years ago. She is a graduate of PHSC, with a degree in health care management. She noted that Land O’ Lakes and the Wesley Chapel area have changed a lot. “I like it (Land O’ Lakes), because when I first moved there I felt in the middle of nowhere. Now I’m somewhere, Stewart said.

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Patrons perusing the shelves of the children’s section at the Hugh Embry Branch Library got a bonus for the past several weeks. But they’ve had to look up to see it. On the top ledge of the shelves, there’s an exhibit of artworks created by students from Saint Anthony Catholic School. The works demonstrate the broad range of artistic instruction these young students experience under the guidance of Linda Whitman, the art teacher at Saint Anthony since 1987. There’s a linoleum block piece featuring a blue cat, created by Effie Tillack, a fourthgrader at the time. There are icons, by Aneesha Joshy and Gabriel Quinn, made through the technique of tooling metal. Destiny Li, who was just in kindergarten, has two pieces on display. One is a painting and the other, a collage. Other examples of interesting work include mixed media, yarn painting and colored pencil drawing. The exhibit went up in August and is expected to come down around Sept. 10. “Miss (Linda) Whitman, she does this every year. This has been going on for about four years now, and every year, there is very impressive art,” said Mary Keesling, Librarian 1 at the Hugh Embry Branch Library. “People have come in to visit,” Keesling added, noting she thinks most of those coming to see the exhibit are parents of the artists. The display showcases Whitman’s effort to give her students a broad exposure to art. “I try to give the kids a taste of every-

tle girl in the exhibit. If you limited her to one, then two other students could have shown. I said, ‘Yeah, but that’s like telling the fastest runner on the track team, ‘Can you slow down, and let somebody else win?’ ” Staging an exhibit requires work, but it is worth it, Whitman said, because of the thrill it provides for the students who have their work on display. “They enjoy exhibiting. They like the limelight,” she said. That is, except perhaps for kindergartners. “The kindergartners are funny. When I ask them, ‘Can I keep your artwork for an art show?’ (They respond) ‘Well, no.’ “They don’t like that idea,” she said, notB.C. Pasco’s Largest Liquor Store Special to The Laker / Lutz News

Pasco County’s largest liquor store, Party Liquors, opened Aug. 8 in Pasco Plaza next to Big Lots in Land O’ Lakes, taking over the former location of Beall’s Outlet. Owner Nick Tanoukhi chose Land O’ Lakes for his third Party Liquors store for the same reason other businesses are opening here — location, location, location! “This area is booming with new homes and new retail,” said Nick. “We wanted to serve residents of Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and Wesley Chapel who did not have a super liquor store in their neighborhood.” Nick found the ideal commercial space for his new store, which is strategically located at the 54/41 intersection in the heart of Pasco County. To celebrate the store’s opening, Party Liquors is hosting a grand opening celebration this Friday, Sept. 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. “It’s going to be a great time! We’re having free wine tastings, free liquor tastings and free beer tastings. Plus, we’ll have lots of free food and giveaways,” said Nick. At 11,200 square feet, Party Liquors is big — five times the size of most neighborhood liquor stores. And, according to Nick, being big matters. “Independent liquor stores like ours need to be big to give us room for lots of inventory, so we can buy at volume pricing,” said Nick. “Our business model is simple — we buy more, so you can pay less!” Nick stocks his stores with just about every liquor category and variety, especially the most popular products. “And

right now that means growlers, craft beer, rye whiskeys and small batch bourbons,” said Nick. Party Liquors has the largest selection of fine wines in the area, stocking vineyards most big box stores don’t carry, Nick says. It also offers an incredible selection of cigars, all stored in a walk-in, climate-controlled humidor. Its beer selection, both kegs and bottled, is also enviable. The store keeps 12 different beers on tap for growlers — 64-ounce, take-home containers of draft beer that only became legal in Florida on July 1. Party Liquor employees take great pride in their product knowledge and customer service. Land O’ Lakes Manager James Hill has worked for the company since 2008, moving up the ranks to become store manager. His Land O’ Lakes team will eventually include 15 employees. James’ product knowledge is evident at the wine tastings he hosts every Friday evening from 4 to 7 p.m., and again on Saturdays from 2 to 5 p.m. “It’s a great time to come by and sample our newest wines, and it’s absolutely free,” said James. 2410 LAND O’ LAKES BLVD LAND O’ LAKES, FL

Freedom looks to build on last year’s winning season By Michael Murillo

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Behind Freedom High School is the school’s football field, where the Patriots play home games. And behind that is a practice field where dozens of players run drills, practice plays, chase footballs, throw spirals and do their best to improve throughout the week. The athletes are both varsity and junior varsity players, and they often practice together. “The motto here is ‘One Team, One Family,’” head coach Tom Donohoe said. “We don’t want any player out here to feel like they’re not a part of what we do. So we’re real big on trying to keep everybody involved.” That involvement is paying dividends under Donohoe’s leadership, now entering its fourth year. Last year, the varsity team was 6-4, which marks the first winning season at Freedom since 2009. Donohoe moves from group to group during practice, relying on his trusted coaching staff, but he is also eager to see for himself how his players are executing. When the offense is running simulations, Donohoe is there. When the kickoff team is practicing, and the kick return team is getting work in, Donohoe is there. And, as they develop over the years and mature on and off the field, Donohoe wants to be there, too. “I tell the guys all the time that I’m a poor man, because I’m a teacher, and we don’t make a lot of money, but I’m a rich man, because I get to work with kids,” Donohoe said. “The opportunity to come out here and help the youth is what it’s about. There’s nothing better than that.”

Zip line through an Old Florida forest The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Ever wonder what it would be like to zip line? Well, you don’t have to go to a tropical rainforest to do it. TreeHoppers Aerial Adventure Park, opening on Sept. 15, offers opportunities for people age 5 through adult to navigate courses of varying difficulty in an Old Florida forest. The company purchased the land at the beginning of the year and began constructing the course in April, said Logan Treaster, general manager for TreeHoppers. The company was attracted to the site because of its characteristics and its location. “We needed it to be relatively undisturbed for quite awhile,”Treaster said. Plus, he noted, “It’s not too far away from some of the bigger market places, like Tampa, Orlando, kind of the Wesley Chapel area, Clearwater.” The 68-acre park, at 27839 Saint Joe Road in Dade City, offers visitors a chance to spend time among the tree-

WHERE: 27839 Old Saint Joe Road in Dade City (Go 9 miles west from Dade City to the end of St. Joe Road, or take Interstate 75, exit 285 west to Bellamy Brothers Boulevard and then go north for 3.5 miles). WHEN: Beginning Sept. 15, the park will be open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. WHO: Climbers can range in age from 5 through adult. Younger climbers must be accompanied by an adult. Climbers cannot weigh more than 265 pounds. COST: Three-hour climb tickets are $35 for children, ages 7 to 11, and $49 for those age 12 and older. Children ages 5 and 6 are free, when accompanying an adult, age 18 or older. Two-hour tickets, after 4 p.m., are $29 on Monday through Thursday for all ages and $35 on Friday through Sunday, with those ages 5 and 6 free, when accompanied by an adult, age 18 or older.

For more information, call (813) 381-5400, or visit TreeHoppers.com.

Above, cruising down from his 20-minute aerial adventure, Logan Treaster will unhook from the safety lines and go up to choose another of the eight different paths through the woods on the 68-acre site. At right, Brad Alcoe tests one of the paths in the TreeHoppers Aerial Adventure Park.

tops, while challenging themselves on courses that are designed for beginners through experts. The park’s eight courses are colorcoded from yellow (easier) to double black diamond (expert). There is a series of platforms interwoven throughout the trees connected by cable, wood, rope and zip lines to form different elements. Groups of elements link together to form separate courses – each of a varying difficulty level. There are more than 100 unique elements, creating a series of adventures to lead visitors throughout the forest. Although every course has zip lines, you will need to climb, maneuver and traverse the various elements to reach them. As one progresses through the difficulty levels, the bridges become less stable, requiring more balance, agility, focus and arm strength. Climbers will receive a harness and a safety and equipment orientation before beginning their climb.
