Pasco extends multifamily moratorium

Pasco County has extended its temporary moratorium on new multifamily applications — which applies to a specific area of the county — until April 1, 2022.

The approved 185-day extension occurred after Commissioner Christina Fitzpatrick called for receiving a report back on the issue within 90 days, but that request received no support from her board colleagues.

The county board initially approved the moratorium on May 4 — retroactive to April 1, 2021 — at the urging of Commissioner Mike Moore, who expressed concerns that his district was becoming oversaturated by multifamily development.

The temporary ban on new applications applies to an area contained in Moore’s District 2, essentially made up of Wesley Chapel and Land O’ Lakes.

The area is generally defined as between State Road 52, on the north; U.S. 41, on the west; State Road 54 on the south; and, Bruce

B. Downs Boulevard, on the east.The boundary zigzags between Moore’s District 2 and Commission Chairman Ron Oakley’s District 1.

Initially, the temporary ban was set to expire on Sept. 28.

Land O’ Lakes rezoning gains approval

The Pasco County Commission has approved a request by DMMD I, LLC/MI Homes to rezone 20 acres at the northwest corner of Kristen Lane and Joy Drive for the development of 54 singlefamily homes.

The request received a recommendation for approval from county planners and from the Pasco County Planning Commission.

At a Sept. 28 public hearing, Clarke Hobby, the attorney for the applicants, told the county board that the site is within the urban service area and the South Market Area — which is the area the county has designated for its greatest growth to occur.

The request, for a Residential-4 Euclidean zoning district, requires lots to be at least 60 feet wide.

Other nearby developments include Oakstead, Bexley North and Concord Station, to name a few. Oakstead Elementary School is across the street from the rezoning site and Pasco County Animal Services is nearby.

Hobby told county commissioners that many of the nearby master-planned developments, if not all, include lot sizes that are substantially smaller than those planned for the rezoning site.

“So the lots you’re seeing here are essentially 50% larger than the majority of the lots that have been approved in this area, over the last several years,” Hobby said.

He tended to practical, and spiritual, needs

Edward Grady Maggard Jr., better known by his nickname, Sonny, had a hand in the practical side of life for decades for countless customers at his appliance store in Dade City.

But he also was involved in helping others develop their spiritual life, once serving as a Sunday School director and growing the program from about 100 participants to more than 1,200.

His Sept. 23 memorial service, filled to capacity, was held in the chapel at Hodges Family Funeral Home and Cremation Center, on U.S. 301, just down the road from Sonny’s Discount Appliances Inc., a business Maggard founded well over a half-century ago.

The store has been a community fixture for people needing dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, stoves, or other household appliances.

Maggard worked alongside his sons, Dale and Randy, and still came to the store long after his sons took over the day-to-day operations.

On the company’s website, the family attributes the appliance store’s longevity to this belief:“If you take care of the customer, the customer will take care of you!”

The Maggards experienced that firsthand when a fire destroyed the business on

Nov. 28, 2001.

Dozens of firefighters tried to put out the blaze but were impeded by insufficient water supplies, according to news accounts at the time. Investigators said the fire began in some cardboard boxes in the back of the store, but did not determine the cause.

The 16,000-square-foot, one-story store, the warehouse and the buildings’ contents were destroyed.

But no one was hurt and no jobs were lost.

And, thanks to the business’ suppliers, and the community it had served for so long, Sonny’s started back up with a fledgling operation less than 24 hours after the fire, according to published reports.

In the midst of it all, Maggard told a reporter that he wanted to thank the more than 500 people — including competitors — who had stopped by or called his home since the fire to express sympathies or to offer help.

Three years later, the store reopened on the same spot where the former store had been destroyed.

Throughout his life, faith was important to Maggard, the funeral home’s obituary says. He was a lifelong follower of Jesus, and devoted a lot of time and service to his church. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed spending as much time as he could with them.

The write-up also describes him as “a true southern gentleman, who never met a stranger.”

Besides faith, family and business, Maggard had other interests.

He was a dedicated cattleman, outdoorsman and lifelong, respected member of the National Wild Turkey Federation, his obituary says.

He was involved in the Second Amendment Club and supported gun safety lessons for youths. He was treasurer on the volunteer board of the CARES Zephyrhills Senior Center, according to news reports.

Turkey hunting was one of his greatest passions.

It was so important that he started the Gulf Coast Limbhangers National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) chapter in Pasco County in 1994, according to a post on the NWTF’s website. The chapter now bears Maggard’s name.

In recognition of his love for the pursuit, his hunting jacket was on proud display at the front of the chapel, during his funeral service.

Mark and Cornie Maffett, of Dade City, wrote about Maggard’s enthusiasm for hunting, on Maggard’s memorial page on the funeral home’s website.

Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Brian Corley has announced that The Voter Participation Center (VPC) and the Center for Voter Information (CIV) were expected to begin sending voter registration application mailings to Pasco County voters last week.

In a news release, Corley said that in the past these mailings have confused and angered Pasco voters who received them for family members who are deceased, persons no longer residing or whom never resided in their household or the state of Florida,

and even for their pets and underage children.

The mailings also often arouse suspicion from already-registered voters who believe their registration has in some way been compromised, according to Corley’s release.

“After many years of lobbying by myself and my fellow supervisors, the legislature passed a bill, which was signed by Governor DeSantis that allowed Florida to join the multi-state compact known as the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC),” Corley said, in the release.

“At times he was so proud to show a specimen waiting for taxidermy and the stories that went with it. Other times we exchanged (stories about) beloved turkey hunts.”

A former employee, Jim Miller, of Jacksonville, also shared his appreciation for the family on Maggard’s memorial page.

“I worked at Sonny’s in the ’90s. Sonny will always have a special spot in my heart along with Randy and Dale,” Miller wrote.

Kevin and Kim Eldridge wrote, in part,“A life well lived for his Savior and his family...what a wonderful legacy.”

Messages of sympathy were shared on the page, from people living as near as Dade City to as far away as Australia.

Maggard was born on Sept. 26, 1934, in Wise, Virginia. He was 86 when he died on Sept. 16, at his Dade City home.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene, who died on Jan. 3, 2020 — shortly before the couple would have marked their 65th anniversary, according to her obituary.

They met when they were 16, her obituary added.

Maggard is survived by his son Dale, and Dale’s wife, Ann; and, his son Randy, and Randy’s wife, Colleen. He also is survived by six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and another great-grandchild that is on the way.

Three Pasco County high schools — Land O’ Lakes High, J.W. Mitchell High and Wiregrass Ranch — have been named recipients of the College Success Award, which recognizes high schools for college preparation and enrollment, as well as postsecondary success, according to a news release.

In winning the award, the schools join 1,838 high schools in 25 states that met the standards to earn the Great Schools College Success Award. GreatSchools.org is a nonprofit that provides a wealth of school information to parents and families to help them make informed decisions to guide their students’ futures.

Award-winners are determined by a methodology that evaluates school-level data on college preparation, college enrollment, and college performance.

In addition to a review of overall student college readiness and test scores, the schools are rated on their record of success with students, broken down by demographics, race and ethnicity, socio-economic status, and disability status.

“Congratulations to the high schools that earned this honor,” said Pasco County Superintendent of Schools Kurt Browning, in the release.

“This truly reinforces the district’s vision of students achieving success in college, career and life,” said Browning.

The Peace Corps announced the University of South Florida (USF) ranked No. 2 among schools on the agency’s list of top

Peace Corps Prep certificate-issuing partners in 2021.

USF issued 58 Peace Corps Prep certificates to the graduating class of 2021.

Two-hundred-fifty students were enrolled in the Peace Corps program during the 20202021 academic year.

“At this pivotal time in our history, young people have a crucial role to play,” said Carol Spahn, Peace Corps acting director, in a news release.

“Through the Peace Corps Prep program, these schools have equipped students with the skills and understanding necessary to help communities near and far recover from the multidimensional and global shocks of the pandemic,” said Spahn.

The top certificate-issuing partners, ranked one through 10, are: Virginia Commonwealth University; University of South Florida; University of Florida; Mercer University; Monmouth University; University of California Education Abroad Program; Elon University; University of Michigan-Ann Arbor; Walsh University; and Pacific Lutheran University.

Veterans Elementary School was one of the recipients of a donation from the Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office to benefit students through the school district’s ABC Program.

ABC Program is a benefit Pasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s five offices this summer collected donations for the Pasco County School District’s ABC (Assist, Believe & Care) Program.

The program was created to provide financial assistance to students and their families who are experiencing economic hardship, especially when those needs interfere with the student’s ability to be academically successful.

The monies collected go into a fund that teachers can use when they see or learn of a need a child may have.

“The management and staff of each of the five tax collector offices in the county chose which school in their respective community they wanted to donate their funds to,” said Fasano, in a news release.

“Each office earmarked $1,000 for a school in need. In addition, due to the generosity of the community, a sixth school was also the recipient of a $1,000 donation,” commented Fasano.

The 185-day extension was recommended by county staff, to provide time that’s needed to complete the study, and to draft and adopt any needed regulations to implement the study’s results, says the resolution, included in the board’s agenda packet.

However, area residents raised concerns about existing traffic and flooding problems — noting the additional development could worsen those conditions.

Jason Christman lives on Mitchell Road, which he described as “right around the corner” from the proposed development.

He laid out three primary issues.

No. 1, he said, is traffic. No. 2, flooding.

And, No. 3, a lack of space for wildlife.

He described existing flooding problems.

After recent rains the water on his property and in the road was 4 inches to 8 inches deep, Christman said. “It took five days for that to recede.”

He’s also worried about the impacts that continuing development is having on wildlife.

“We have an overrun of wildlife. I have deer coming out, even in the daylight, trying to get into my garden,” he said.

Large developments are crowding out wild creatures, he said.“There’s no place for them (wild creatures) to go.”

Debbie Moore, who lives near the rezoning site, said “this isn’t a NIMBY (Not in My Backyard) thing.This is a ‘Save the wetlands, the wildlife and our way of life,’ thing.

“The builders and the developers, they make their money and they leave,” Moore said.

Area resident Becky Smith told the commissioners: “This is a huge problem. I’ve been in the area since the early ’80s, living on Mitchell Road.The changes over the last

“The closest, as the crow flies, that this site is to Mitchell is over a quarter of a mile,” the attorney said.

He also noted that the site in not located on maps that depict areas of observed flooding, and it’s not within a basin of special concern.

“There are neighbors that have flooding problems.We don’t deny that,” Hobby said.

He assured commissioners and neighbors that he is happy to meet with neighbors and county staff, after the rezoning, to see if there steps that can be taken by the county elsewhere, to address the area drainage issues.There may be some issues with a county drainage structure, for instance.

Hobby disputed testimony relating to traffic on Lake Patience Road.

Lake Patience Road is operating well within its capacity, according to a traffic engineer’s report prepared for Hobby’s client.

The issue, Hobby said, is the lack of a traffic signal at U.S. 41 and Lake Patience Road.

That intersection is at least a half-mile away from his client’s proposed development.

“It is simply not enough for the members of the public to say that there’s a traffic problem — when they don’t have the expertise,” Hobby said.

County board members were not swayed by the residents’ testimony and vote 4-1 to approve the rezoning, with Commissioner Jack Mariano voting no.

In granting the extension, the board agreed with the resolution’s finding that the action “is in the best interest of the public health, safety, and welfare, and that it advances a valid and important public purpose.”

No additional extensions will be granted, the resolution says.

Objections were raised to the moratorium when it was initially approved, but there was no public opposition before the board’s recent vote.

t’s about the midway point for the 2021 Florida high school football regular season.

Here’s a closer look at some of the developing storylines involving teams and players from schools in The Laker/Lutz News’ coverage area, within Hillsborough and Pasco counties.

COVID-19 still impacting play The COVID-19 pandemic reared its ugly head in the early portions of the 2021 prep football season, with a number of cancellations and postponements across the Tampa Bay area and state as a whole.

Local programs impacted include: • Wiregrass Ranch High was unable to play its first two football games of the season because of coronavirus outbreaks from their would-be opponents. It was a flipped script from 2020, when the Bulls missed out on the playoffs after its last game was canceled due to virus issues within its own program.

• Wharton High was forced to cancel multiple games amid coronavirus concerns, be it contract tracing or positive tests, within its own program.This included a highly anticipated matchup against nationally ranked Tampa Jesuit in early September.

The Gaither High Cowboys appear better than their 3-3 record indicates.

The Gaither High Cowboys entered the 2021 campaign with quite lofty expectations.

After all, last season’s team won 10 straight games before falling to Lake Minneola High in the Class 6A regional final.

And many key contributors from that

Zephyrhills’ other victories have been lopsided affairs over Hernando (43-2 win), Fivay (42-0 win),Wesley Chapel (34-9 win) and Weeki Wachee (48-0 win), respectively.

The Bulldogs have exhibited strong play in all three facets of the game — offense, defense and special teams.

Momentum-shifting takeaways also have been a calling card, as the Bulldogs have banner squad returned this year, including a slew of NCAA Division I FBS recruits and national ranked prospects like defensive tackle Tawfiq Thomas, defensive end Mario Eugenio, and inside linebacker Kobe McCloud.

Not to mention the impact transfer of South Carolina high school quarterback Brooks Bentley, who has Division I FCS offers and comes from a legacy football family of three brothers who played college football.

But the Cowboys have somewhat stumbled out of the gate, now staring at a pedestrian 3-3 mark.

Their slate has been anything but a cakewalk, however, with multiple close defeats against fellow area powerhouses in Armwood (22-19 loss),Tampa Bay Tech (2814 loss) and Mitchell (17-14 overtime loss) high schools.

The Cowboys should have a much more manageable schedule down the stretch, against the likes of Steinbrenner, Sickles, Leto and Hillsborough high schools, respectively.

The Pasco High Pirates have had a tough year thus far with a difficult schedule and mounting injuries.

These teams need a rebound As some local teams have endured surprising — or expected — achievements on the gridiron, other programs are still trying to find their footing entering the second half of the season, be it tough scheduling or otherwise ineffective play.

These squads include Bishop

McLaughlin (0-3), Freedom (1-5) Pasco (0-5), Sunlake (1-5), and Steinbrenner (2-4) high schools.

Pasco has had arguably the most challenging go, as they’ve yet to score a point this season, being outmatched by a 156-0 margin.

Moreover, Pasco’s season has faced more turmoil.

Due to mounting injuries, it forfeited its Oct. 1 contest against Ocala Vanguard High and canceled its Oct. 8 game versus Lake Gibson High.

The cancellation against a district foe (Vanguard) means the Pirates will now have to go independent for the remainder of the season, per rules from the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA).

Among the team standouts are senior tailback Jaylin Thomas, senior linebacker Theotis Smith and senior defensive end Maguire Neal, among others.

Zephyrhills is out to improve on its 8-3 mark from last season, which included a string of eight consecutive wins.

At 5-0, the Land O’ Lakes High Gators are off to its best start since 2013.

Land O’ Lakes enjoying turnaround season The Land O’ Lakes High Gators strategically opted to go independent this year, rather than play a large-school Class 7A slate.

The decision was made, in part, to give a youthful roster chock-full of freshmen and sophomores more opportunities to have success and compete game-to-game, rather than become discouraged by a daunting large-school schedule.

The move is paying dividends, as the Gators are off to a 5-0 start under secondyear head coach Trac Baughn, a longtime college and high school coach mostly throughout Mississippi.

The Gators haven’t been undefeated this far into a season since 2013, when the team got off to a 6-0 start under then-coach Brian Wachtel.

This season has included a nail-biting 2826 road victory last month over Sunlake High in the annual ‘Butter Bowl’ rivalry game — something the Gators program hadn’t done since 2018.

One of the many bright spots has been sophomore quarterback Kyle Horvath, who’s completing nearly 62% of his throws for 1,023 yards, 16 total touchdowns and no interceptions.

Also of note: Land O’ Lakes junior varsity squad is off to a similarly impressive 5-0 campaign.

Grand opening festivities offered countless fun options The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

ids competed at HulaHooping, checked out the new gymnasium, played some outdoor hockey and had a chance to enjoy other activities, at the grand opening celebration of the Wesley Chapel District Park Recreation Center, at 7727 Boyette Road.

The atmosphere was festive — from the archway of balloons that greeting those arriving at the rec center, to the free cupcakes doled out to those wanting one.

The celebration also included inflatables, games, music, ball hockey clinics and food trucks.

Children had a chance to play and adults could find out about the various programs that will be offered in the new center.

The new 17,800-square-foot gymnasium and activity rooms have been added to the 144-acre park, making it the largest indoor/outdoor county park in Pasco County.

Many classes will be offered there, including ballet and jazz, boxing, chair yoga and cheerleading, according to the district park’s Facebook page.

According to previously published reports in The Laker/Lutz News, Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore has long advocated for an indoor recreation center to be built at the district park.

He knows how hot it gets at the park: He coached flag football, baseball and soccer there for years, when his three children were younger.

Those wishing to participate in the district park’s programs must purchase a yearly membership for $10 per person, which applies to everyone over age 13.

As designed, the center can accommodate basketball, volleyball, pickleball, summer day camp, toddler activities and community events.

The writing literally was on the wall, as visitors to the new recreational facility search informational leaflets to find out about the diverse programing offered at the center.

The new facility features a gymnasium with a regulation-size basketball court that can be converted into two smaller courts, two volleyball courts or four pickleball courts.

There are restrooms and showers, too.

Multipurpose areas will accommodate a range of activities for groups, such as the Rotary Club, community associations, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.

The district park already is packed with outdoor sports activities, including several athletic fields for youth and adults, a lighted soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, and picnic tables and grills for barbecues.

GOPHER TORTOISE CONSERVATION

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is seeking landowners to help with gopher tortoise conservation efforts as part of the agency’s Gopher Tortoise Recipient Site Program, ac-

cording to a news release.

The program benefits landowners and tortoises, and is compatible with other land uses, such as hunting and wetland mitigation.

It also provides landowners with an opportunity to generate additional revenue from their lands, as the landowner may charge a market-based fee for each tortoise received at the site.

The FWC will assist property owners whose lands meet the recipient site criteria throughout the application process, and also will help landowners make improvements to their land to enhance quality habitat for gopher tortoises and other wildlife.

Ellie is the sweetest girl Ellie can be a little nervous with new people, especially men, but she warms up once she realizes they are a friend. Bosco’s great food leads to great community service

When Charles and Nancy Frankulin assumed ownership of Bosco’s Italian To Go in Wesley Chapel, their goal was to offer more than just a fresh menu with delicious pizza, but also to serve their community.

The couple started working at Bosco’s while in college, and did not want to let the stand-alone restaurant close when the previous owner decided to sell. Pasco County adopts new budget

The Pasco County Commission has adopted a new budget for fiscal year 2021-2022, which includes an increase of $106 million in general fund expenditures.

“The county realized a 10.8% increase in taxable assessed values the past year,” said Robert Goehig, the county’s budget director.

Goehig identified some of items included in this year’s budget: • A wage increase for board and constitutional officer employees • Bringing Fire Station No. 3 and Fire Station No. 9 online.Adding a second rescue unit at Fire Rescue Station 30 • Adding a veterans service officer • Adding positions in the planning and zoning divisions • Reaching the recommended reserve level of 16.7% of budgeted expenditures.

Not on that list, however, was full funding for a request by Nikki Alvarez-Sowles, who is Pasco County’s clerk and comptroller.

In previous discussions, the clerk said her office has been covering expenses, which, by law, are the obligation of the county.

In essence, she said her office has been subsidizing the county.

The clerk maintains she is just asking for what she is entitled to, by state law.

During the public comment portion of the hearing, three speakers urged the county board to step up to cover those costs.

The county has agreed to provide the funding, but only 40% of it this year.

In previous discussions, County Administrator Dan Biles said paying the full amount in a single year is too big of an ask.

During the budget hearing, however, Commissioner Christina Fitzpatrick made a motion calling upon the county to cover the entire cost.

Her motion failed, for lack of a second.

In action earlier in the day, the county board: • Approved a request by Pasco County Fire Rescue for emergency authorization to purchase $627,481 worth of equipment to enable the department’s personnel to safely respond to needs of COVID-19 patients. Items include patient lifts, infection control airway bags, specialized aerosolized nebulizers, safety goggles and others.The expenditures will be paid for with Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding.

• Approved $865,000 for the purchase of library books, resource subscriptions and other items by Pasco County Libraries for fiscal year 2022.

• Held the first reading on a change to the land development code relating to solar facilities, in response to state legislation. Under the change, solar facilities shall be allowed as a principal use in all agricultural zoning categories and as a special exceptions use in commercial/light manufacturing, light industrial and general industrial categories. The second and final hearing is scheduled for Oct. 12.

• Approved an amendment to the county’s land development code to change the planned alignment for Tyndall Road, in the Villages of Pasadena Hills, and to make changes relative to administrative review fees in the special planning area.

• Approved renaming water and wastewater service impact fees to instead call them connection fees.At the same time, the board approved increasing the charges associated with the connection fees and moving the fee schedule out of the land development code.

The new connection fees call for an increase of $499, phased in over four years, for water and sewer connections; and an increase of $475, also phased in over four years, for water, sewer and reclaimed water connections. The last time the rates were modified was 2006.

Pasco County renews landscaping agreement The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The Pasco County Commission has approved a one-year renewal of a landscaping agreement with NDL LLC, doing business as Natural Designs Landscaping, for ongoing landscape maintenance services.

The agreement, which was approved as part of the county board’s consent agenda, is for $7,239,588 for fiscal year 2022, bringing the new cumulative total to $28,801,521 for a four-year period ending Sept. 30, 2022.

The board’s consent agenda consists of items that receive no board or public comment and are approved with a single vote.

The board approved a one-year renewal period, which expires on Sept. 30, 2022.The current agreement allows up to one more additional year.

The estimated amount of work required by each department is: • Facilities Management: $495,000 • Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources: $125,970 • Public Works: $5.5 million • Utilities Operations and Maintenance: $893,000 • Pasco County Public Transportation: $6,468 • Libraries: $122,000 • Fire Rescue: $97,120

Libraries plan more outreach, programs and events

The 2021-2024 Strategic Plan for Pasco County’s library system calls for more outreach, more programs and cultural events, to enhance the system’s services and to attract new users.

The Pasco County Commission approved the system’s 2021-2024 Strategic Plan during the county board’s Sept. 15 meeting.

The Pasco County Library Cooperative, also known as Pasco County Libraries, must create a new strategic plan every three years, and that plan must be approved by the county board, in order for the system to qualify for state aid for public libraries.

Nancy Fredericks, a library administrator, told commissioners that the new plan was developed by the county’s library team, along with the help of Leon Donovan, a consultant, to obtain community feedback through planning sessions, focus groups and stakeholder meetings. The effort included two surveys, too.

Besides telling the board about efforts to develop the plan, Fredericks shared a video that outlined the key points.

The board’s agenda materials also spelled out the primary elements of the strategic plan.

In essence, it identifies three major focus areas: Community, Culture and Education. It also contains goals, and strategies to achieve those goals.

PRIORITY AREA: COMMUNITY

In this focus area, the library system plans to increase outreach opportunities for community members and for organizations to become involved with the library.

It has identified activities to help achieve those goals.

For instance, it plans to establish Pop-Up library services to expand access to resources and services. It also is planning to provide 20 hours of service per month beginning in the first quarter of 2022.

It will promote library resources at a minimum of 20 meetings per year for community groups, civic organizations, nonprofits, and government agencies.

And, it plans to coordinate with the Friends of the Library on an annual campaign to help increase membership and raise funds.

PRIORITY AREA: EDUCATION

In this area, the library system has identified the goal of providing access to a collection of print, non-print, and electronic resources that support the diverse needs and interests of Pasco County residents.

It also aims to provide resources and programming to support lifelong learning, and

skill and knowledge development across multiple literacies.

To help achieve those goals, it plans to partner with the Early Learning Coalition of Pasco and Hernando Counties to provide four programs per year.

It also plans to develop an Adult Literacy/ESL training program, and to train 15 volunteers per year to teach basic literacy and ESL to Pasco County citizens.

Also, it will offer two digital literacy activities per quarter to increase skill development in finding, evaluating, creating and communicating information on digital platforms.

Plus, it intends to create a Library of Things to circulate nontraditional materials, with a focus on items that support makerspace activities. It aims to add three new items per year to the Library of Things.

Other activities include: • Selecting 15 new items per year to be added to the Adaptive Toy Collection • Providing at least one staff training session per quarter focused on skill development, which relates to content creation • Offering two programs per quarter that educate the public on how to produce professional content for various media platforms

The massive makeovers are being supported by a bond issue approved by voters.

The cooperative library system includes these branch libraries: Hugh Embry, New River, Land O’ Lakes, Starkey Ranch TLC, Centennial Park, South Holiday, Regency Park and Hudson.

NEW SURGICAL CENTER AdventHealth leaders cut the ribbon on the new $300 million Taneja Center for Surgery at AdventHealth Tampa, the largest surgical expansion in Tampa Bay history, according to a news release.

The 314,000-square-foot surgical tower is a state-of-the-art facility built to expand for Florida’s growing population, and for larger robotics needed for intricate surgical cases requiring multiple surgeons.

New additions include: Withlacoochee River Park, 12449 Withlacoochee Blvd., in Dade City.

The event will include a Stomp Out Suicide 5k (starting at 8 a.m., $35) and 1mile trail run/walk (starting at 9 a.m., $15); followed by music, a family fun zone; youth and adult recreational/leisure activities; vendors; raffles; food trucks; stress reduction activities and demonstrations; mental health resources; rejuvenation opportunities; and more.

Proceeds will help to establish/facilitate mental health events within Pasco County.

Participating runners/walkers will receive a race shirt, complimentary snacks and a finisher award.

TRAVEL INSURANCE PURCHASES UP

New data shows that a growing number of travelers are turning to travel insurance to protect their vacation investments and health while traveling, according to a AAA Travel survey.

That survey showed that 31% of U.S. travelers are more likely to purchase travel insurance for their trips planned between now and the end of 2022, specifically due to the pandemic.

AAA’s travel insurance sales have increased more than double digits year-over-year, as members return to travel and see the value of protecting that investment, according to a AAA news release.

Choosing the right policy is important,

and increasingly travelers want policies that protect against commonly covered reasons for trip cancellations and interruptions, as well as other travel-related incidents including change fees, delays or lost/damaged luggage, to name a few.

FLORIDA’S JOB GROWTH

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity recently announced that Florida has experienced 16 consecutive months of job growth. In total, Florida has gained 990,400 jobs since April 2020.

Florida’s unemployment rate of 5% for August 2021 dropped one-tenth of a percentage point from July 2021.

For 13 consecutive months, the state of Florida’s unemployment rate has remained below the national rate, currently at 5.2%.

Florida’s labor force also continues to grow substantially, increasing by 65,000 over the month. Over the last five months, Florida’s labor force has grown by 373,000.

Florida’s unemployment rate also has lowered over the year, decreasing by 2.9%, according to the department of economic opportunity.
