Changing views on substance abuse By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

There’s a powerful tool that could help reduce substance abuse, but it’s rarely considered, according to Monica Rousseau, coordinator for the Pasco County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention. “In order to reduce substance abuse, we must change the way we think about it,” Rousseau said, during a presentation on substance abuse prevention at Pasco-Hernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch. While addiction is viewed as a choice, other medical problems that could be the viewed the same way, generally aren’t, Rousseau said. “We think about them extremely differently. We think of addiction as something demonic, as a moral hazard. And we think of other things, as ‘That person needs medical care.’ ” In reality, people with addictions and other medical conditions often require a lifestyle change, may need some type of medication, should consult with their doctor and need social support to help them change their behavior, she said. Not only do people think of the issues differently, but funding for help is different, too, she said. While an attitude shift may be one of the best ways to help reduce substance abuse, there are other ways to tackle the issue, Rousseau said. For instance, her organization helped implement a local ordinance to reduce access to synthetic marijuana. “How many of you remember Spice? How many of you knew people who were impacted by Spice? “When Spice came out, I was in college. I was 20. Spice was a really, really big deal. I had a lot of friends who had a lot of complications from Spice. She had friends who wound up in the hospital and flunked out of school. “I have one friend, at the moment, who has been in a severe depression for a few years and has tried to commit suicide a few times,” she said. Pasco County did such a great job with its ordinance that it became the standard for the state and was referenced in national documentaries, she said. “The way we did this is by changing the ability of people to market it. The composition of Spice can change every year, so if you just banned the components of it, the drug manufacturers would change one component of it. In Pasco County, we restricted the way it was able to be marketed and the packaging.”

Sonia Thorn, an associate dean at Pasco-Hernando State College’s Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch, said a series of seminars this fall is on prevention, including such topics as suicide and substance abuse. In the spring, the series will focus on preventing chronic diseases.

Substance abuse awareness event WHAT: Learn how to recognize addictive behavior and address risk factors that may lead to substance abuse. Her organization also has also been involved in efforts to reduce driving under the influence. Statistics show that drunk driving arrests are down, she said. “Immediately you want to say, ‘Yes. This is great. This is awesome.’ However, we also know that our budget for our drug enforcement patrolling has gone down,” Rousseau said. When drivers are cited for DUI, they are given a survey, which asks drivers where they were when they had their last drink and if anyone encouraged them not to drive. It turns out there are 10 restaurants in Pasco County where most drivers report having their last drink before their DUI, Rousseau said. Her organization has targeted those restaurants with public awareness campaigns, to help reduce the problem. Rousseau’s talk was part of a series of speakers arranged by PHSC’s Porter Campus, in an effort to support its academic programs and provide community outreach,

said Sonia Thorn, associate dean at the Porter campus. “I think it’s two-fold. Sometimes, people need information, and a lot of these agencies need assistance,”Thorn said. “For this fall semester, we’re focusing on prevention,” she said. “We did domestic violence last month. We had 150 people. “In September, we did suicide prevention. “In the spring, we’ll be working on chronic disease prevention. We’ll be having seminars on that from February to April.” “In April, even though we’re doing a chronic disease series for the spring time, we’re going to work with Sunrise of Pasco and also do a sexual awareness assault month in April.”

Drive down Old Pasco Road, and there’s not a lot of traffic to contend with — yet. That’s likely to change when the combination high school-middle school being built by Pasco County Schools opens, slated for August 2017. Crews have cleared the trees and prepped the land for a school now known as High School GGG, but it will actually serve students in grades six through 12. The district needs to relieve crowding at Wiregrass Ranch High School and Wesley Chapel High School, and may even send some students from Pasco High School to the new high school, once it opens, said Ray Bonti, assistant superintendent of support services. But, it also needs to reduce crowding at John Long and Weightman middle schools. Since the district can’t afford to build a new high school and a new middle school, it has decided to share the facilities at the new school, which will be located on the west side of Old Pasco Road, near

Overpass Road. The school is being built for 1,900 students and carries a price tag of $62 million. A committee will be meeting in about a year to recommend boundaries for the new school. The district has a couple of hundreds of

acres at the site, so it has plenty of room to build a middle school there, once it has the money. Crowding is so significant at Wiregrass Ranch High that it went to a 10-period day this year, to manage the number of students who are on campus at the same time.

Antiques store is repository of memories By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Johnny Herrmann’s business card boasts that his antiques business, in San Antonio, is “not your grandma’s antiques store.” But, there’s no doubt that the shop where his business operates is steeped in his family’s history. The store is in the 1946 Herrmann Building, at 11853 S. Curley St. The building is one of a collection of structures on Curley Street, south of State Road 52, constructed by the Herrmann family, beginning in the 1920s. “People used to refer to this part of town as Herrmann-ville, because there were so many buildings that my grandfather and father built,” said Johnny, whose grandfather moved to the area in the 1920s, according to published reports. The collection of businesses is now called the South San Antonio Arts and Antiques District, or s.o.s.a for short. The businesses, as well as San Antonio Pottery, are part of that district. Step inside San Antonio Antiques, and you’ll find a place chock full of unusual items — purchased from estate sales, other antique shops and individual sellers. A few years ago, the place was vacant, and it had been that way since the mid1970s, Johnny said. Now, it houses the antiques shop, Tangerine Hill and Red Dog Designs & Home, and A Healthy Convenience. Upstairs, there’s a yoga studio and a place for martial arts classes. Beyond its current role, the building is a physical reminder of a family that has played a considerable role in San Antonio. Johnny lives in the house that belonged to his grandfather, Lucius, who was a baker by trade. His business is in the space that was once occupied by his father’s business. Indeed, the gleaming terrazzo floor near the front door is emblazoned with the logo

for Saf-T-Gas, the business that Joe Herrmann ran from the building. Joe Herrmann arrived in San Antonio when his father, Lucius, moved there and set up a bakery. Lucius Herrmann left the area, but Joe and his wife, Rose Ullrich Herrmann, stayed,

raising nine children there. Joe and Rose were deeply involved in community life. Joe played a role in so many different ventures and organizations there, he was called “Mr. San Antonio,” according to news accounts. He was entrepreneurial from a young age. He delivered newspapers and fresh bread. He set up a radio store. He caddied at a golf course, too. News accounts and historic documents detail Joe’s involvement in politics, banking, business and civic life. He was appointed by the governor to fill a seat on the Pasco County Commission, upon the death of Arthur Schrader. He served as San Antonio’s mayor. He helped establish the Traveler’s Rest community and was one of the founding fathers of the San Antonio Credit Union, the Pioneer Florida Museum and Village, and the Pasco County Fair Association. He also championed the San Antonio

Rattlesnake Festival and the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce. Before he died, Joe made it known he would like to see the former Saf-T-Gas building revived, Johnny said. Now, it’s a showcase of the items Johnny has accumulated through years in the antiques business. In the past, he and a partner had stores in Seminole Heights and Ybor City, and then Johnny traveled thousands of miles each year, going to shows in cities from New York to Miami. He still has a passion for collecting and selling. He enjoys the thrill of finding an unusual item, or a great bargain, and he continually seeks to broaden his knowledge. He enjoys being surrounded by interesting objects and paintings in his shop. And, it’s nice, he said, to be able to walk from the house that his grandfather built to work in the building that his father constructed and to do business in a community that he calls home.

Consolidation improves emergency operations By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

Pasco County’s 911 call center is making strides in improving its operations, according to an annual report of its activities. For the past two years, the Public Safety Communications department has been in transition as the county and Pasco County Sheriff’s office consolidated emergency response operations. The Dade City Police Department also recently merged its 911 center with the county. The Public Safety Communications division is a busy place. In 2014-2015, it answered more than 525,000 calls. Of those, more than 210,000 were 911 calls, and nearly 38,000 were classified as high priority. Of more than 252,000 dispatched calls,

most went to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office and Pasco Fire Rescue, the report shows. There were about 15,000 dropped, or abandoned, calls. That’s a significant number, according to Randy TeBeest, assistant county administrator for public safety and administration. But, it’s an improvement. In a single year, the center has reduced the number of abandoned calls from 10 percent to 7 percent, the report found. “Abandoned calls are a national problem,” TeBeest said, and they happen for a variety of reasons. Children sometimes dial 911 by mistake. Prank calls are made. In the age of the cellphone, pocket dialing happens. And at accident scenes, people who start to call 911 realize other people also are dialing and,TeBeest said, they drop their calls. A benefit of consolidation is a 55 percent reduction in call transfers from one depart-

20 seconds. There was a significant decline in answering times for the sheriff’s office in the summer of 2014, but TeBeest said, “At all times, we were above industry standards.” Most recently, call takers answered about 99 percent of calls for assistance from the sheriff’s office within the standard recommended time. Pasco County brings back bus service for Veterans Day By Kathy Steele

ksteele@lakerlutznews.com

People looking to board Pasco County’s public buses on Veterans Day are in luck. Routes will be in operation on the holiday for the first time in nearly seven years. Pasco County commissioners voted unanimously on Nov. 3 to authorize the Nov. 11 bus service, at a cost of about $17,000. According to a county memorandum, potential ridership could be about 3,200 trips on that day. Many of those expected to board buses that day work in the retail sector, said Philip Pumphrey, the county’s public transportation director. Bus drivers will operate on a Saturday schedule from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., on what Pumphrey describes as a “pilot” program. Administrative offices will be closed on Nov. 11. Based on ridership, Pumphrey said the county would gauge the need to add more “non-major holidays,” such as Columbus Day and Good Friday, to its bus schedules. Budget cuts during the economic downturn have kept public buses off the road on minor holidays since 2008. But an improving financial outlook, and some back and forth between Pasco County commissioners, county staff members and the local Teamsters Union 79, put the buses back on the road.

At least they’ll be there on Nov. 11. But, stay tuned for Nov. 27, the day after Thanksgiving. The commissioners would need to authorize an additional $17,000 to cover one more holiday bus service. That likely would happen only if enough bus drivers agreed to work that day. For 2015, the county didn’t set a designated county holiday schedule that included “non-major” holidays. Riders were alerted to that via posters displayed inside the buses, according to James Boucher, union steward for Teamsters Union 79. He spoke to commissioners during public comment. “This late in the year, drivers have planned vacation time, family time around those days,” Boucher said. “It would inconvenience them.” Commissioners initially sought to approve service for both holidays, as long as enough bus drivers agreed to work. They were disappointed at the response. Though Pumphrey anticipated bus drivers would volunteer for extra pay, he said, “I think there was some changes of the mind going on.”

As a professional writer for 25 years, Grace Maselli has penned everything from philanthropist features to executive summaries for advisory boards. She’s garnered compliments from CEOs, and praise from audiences when she reads her poetry. But, her upcoming audience has her a little nervous. It’s a gathering of elementary school children. “They’re a tough bunch, man,” Maselli observed. Fortunately, Maselli isn’t bringing a business profile or a PowerPoint presentation. Instead, she’ll read her first children’s book, “Francis and Coco: A Tale of Two Unlikely Friends,” on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m., at the Wilderness Lake Preserve Lodge, 21320 Wilderness Lake Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes. Like her other nonfiction writing, the story of Francis, the poodle/Pekingese dog, and Coco the guinea pig, is real. They live with Maselli’s two other dogs, her two children and her husband. And, the story takes place in conjunction with their frequent moves before settling in Land O’ Lakes. And yes, Francis and Coco really are friends. “Francis will let her scramble all over his body. He’ll roll back. She curls up with him,” Maselli said.“They honestly get along.” She wanted their story to be both authentic and relatable. Adults will recognize the familiar struggle parents feel when they allow a child to have a new pet, worrying how they’ll assimilate and interact with other pets. And she wants children to see the story as an example of very different beings coexisting and forging a special friendship. “To me, this is universal because animals accept one another, and they don’t care if you’re a kangaroo or a lion,” Maselli said. “And, I think that, metaphorically, life would be a lot different for us if we didn’t judge people by their surfaces.” “Francis and Coco” is a story for thirdgraders, but Maselli didn’t want to limit herself to simple words and phrases. The story contains words like “persistent,” “bluster,” and even “falderal” — which means trivial or nonsensical behavior. Maselli wanted to tell a story and expose children to bigger words, acclimating them to some elevated language without making it difficult to follow the story. Parents might read the story to them, giving them the experience of hearing the language. If they end up learning new words, she considers that a bonus. To accommodate the children who will be in attendance, Maselli plans to have assis-

tants holding up the pages as she reads, making it easier to follow along. She wants the auditory experience to be a positive one, and the story easy to follow. That story begins with Francis as a nervous puppy, and ends with a new friendship when another animal joins the fold. In between, the family disagrees on how things will turn out, and some members come around to the idea of new pets and how they’ll get along together. Maselli hopes the realistic elements of the story appeals to children and those who might read it to them. So far, the feedback has been very positive, she said. In fact, one family member, who has a 2year-old son, told her that he’s been captivated by the story. “She sent me a picture of him thumbing through it, and he’s talking about the characters in the book,” Maselli said. While it’s a different type of writing for her, it wasn’t an easy project. Much of the story came to her at once, but she put it away for a while before returning to it. Now that the work is done, she wants to not only entertain young children and teach them about getting along with someone different, but also have something for her teenage children to remember as a memento of a certain point in their lives. “To me, this is more like something I want to leave for my kids as a gift from me after I’m gone,” Maselli said. Big Taste at Big Dog’s NYC Pizza Special to The Laker / Lutz News

There’s a new pizzeria in Lutz that’s already the talk of the town — both for its unusual name and its excellent pizza. Big Dog’s NYC Pizza, located in Sunset Plaza in downtown Lutz, opened this summer under the management of Kelly Lamplugh. The restaurant’s unique name honors her husband, Al, who is known as “Big Dog” to family members. “My husband was a huge supporter of me starting this new venture,” said Kelly. “Plus, the name “Big Dog” was memorable and set us apart from other pizza places.” Kelly is having fun with the “Big Dog” theme. Al built the front of an oversized dog house between the customer counter and the kitchen. When guests come into the restaurant, it’s the first thing they see. “Everybody comments on the dog house when they come into the restaurant,” said Kelly. Kelly is proud that most first-time customers become regular customers, coming back for great pizza that is fairly priced. “We make everything from scratch, beginning with our pizza dough and pizza sauce.” said Kelly. “I buy fresh ingredients for toppings every day. Everything is fresh — nothing is canned or frozen.” Big Dog’s NYC Pizza is the second pizzeria Kelly has operated. Before moving two years ago from Philadelphia to Wesley Chapel, she owned Broomall Pizza, a popular neighborhood restaurant in a suburb close to the city. “I loved running Broomall Pizza,” said Kelly. “I was very sad to close the store after my husband’s company transferred

him to Wesley Chapel.” After working in the restaurant business for 20 years, Kelly changed careers when she moved to Florida and became a nurse. While she enjoyed nursing, she never got over her love of running a restaurant. So when the opportunity arose to manage this Lutz restaurant, she jumped at the chance. Kelly knew she wanted another pizzeria, and wanted to price her pizzas so families could afford them. “When we moved to Florida, we thought Pizza here was very expensive,” said Kelly. “I really wanted to target a more affordable pizza for families like mine.” Big Dog’s most popular pizza is The Carnivore, which Kelly says has 50 percent more meat than most meat-lover pizzas. Also popular are its meatball subs and Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, both which come on Amorosco’s bread, a favorite Philadelphia bakery. Other best sellers are the restaurant’s everyday family specials: $20 Family (Large, 16” cheese pizza, 6 garlic knots and 12 zeppoles); $22 Pup (Large 16” cheese pizza, 10 wings and salad); and $29 Big Dog (Large cheese pizza, 20 wings, 6 garlic knots and 2 liter soda).

Sharing barbecue and friendship with those who served The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Members of Wesley Chapel Rotary, its Land O’ Lakes Satellite Club, the Land O’ Lakes Interact Club and other volunteers served a barbecued meal to veterans at the Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home on Nov. 7. They served a luncheon complete with brisket, chicken and side dishes. All together, 80 pounds of brisket and 40 pounds of chicken were served. Besides providing a meal, the Rotarians and their friends shared time with the veterans, and listened to their memories of their service to the nation. This was the fifth year that Rotarians have served a barbecue lunch at the nursing home to honor the veterans. Unfortunately, a large number of patients

could not attend the lunch because of flu or upper respiratory issues, so they were served in their rooms.

Traditions on the Green needs vendors By B.C. Manion

bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The Heritage Park Foundation and the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce are gearing up for this year’s “Traditions on the Green.” The event will feature a pancake breakfast with Santa, concerts on “the green” by local high school and middle school bands, and performances by elementary school choirs. It also will offer crafts for kids and cookie decorating. The award-winning teen puppet team from Van Dyke United Methodist Church will perform, too. Vendors will sponsor a Holiday Scavenger Hunt, with the winner receiving a $50 Walmart gift card, said Sandy Graves, of the Heritage Park Foundation. The event is slated for Dec. 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will be at the Land O’

Lakes Community Center, 5402 Land O’ Lakes Blvd. While planning efforts are in full gear, organizers are looking for vendors and sponsors to help pull it off, Graves said. This is the first year the event will be able to take advantage of the upgraded park, which has undergone a $2.4 million renovation. Next year, Graves hopes that the planned outdoor stage at the park will be available for the annual event’s performing groups. “Traditions on the Green” aims to be fun, inexpensive, community event, said Graves, who wants to revive the old-fashioned fun she had while growing up in Land O’ Lakes. Anyone would like to participate in “Traditions on the Green” should call Tina Gibbons at the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce at (813) 909-2722 or Sandy Graves, with the Heritage Park Foundation, at (813) 817-3011.

John Chaplick

IMAGES COURTESY OF JOHN CHAPLICK

Lutz author wins writing award John Chaplick, of Lutz, recently received a first place award in the 2015 Royal Palm Literary Competition sponsored by the Florida Writers Association. Chaplick’s winning entry, ‘The Rivergrass Legacy,’ took top honors in the ‘published romance’ category. The novel tells the story of a Colombian drug cartel’s use of a tropical fish hatchery in Florida to launder money, which subsequently forces a Boston aristocrat to align with rural Southern farmers to unravel the mystery. Along the way, a romance is rekindled. Chaplick said he was delighted by the honor. The Royal Palm Literary Awards are bestowed annually to recognize outstanding writing in 40 categories.

Gifts sweeten Sparkle Campaign

Florida Hospital Zephyrhills’ Sparkle Campaign at the Simpson Breast Health Center in October focused on the importance of screening mammograms. As part of the campaign, Kiefer Village Jewels in Dade City donated four Alex and Ani cupcake charm bracelets and a Pandora cupcake jewelry box. Patients had the opportunity to enter a drawing to win one of the prizes, and on Nov. 4, Brittany Woods (center), Kiefer’s manager, drew the winners’ names. Also pictured are Alexa Stinnette, left, manager of the Simpson Breast Health Center, and Laurie Hitzel, director of Imaging and Women’s Services.

Vicky King is Florida Special Olympics Coach of the Year By B.C. Manion

her school. She treats all athletes the same, Wheelock said. “She has high expectations for all of the athletes to perform at their top level.” Lisa Eckel, whose daughter, Haley plays on King’s team, is delighted about King’s recognition. “I think it’s a well-deserved honor. It couldn’t have been awarded to anyone better,” Eckel said. “She (King) spends lots of time and effort with all of the kids in the community and in the school, and she just brings out

the best in all of them,” Eckel said. “My daughter (a partner on the team) has been super fortunate to have these past three years with her (King), on and off, the soccer field. Eckel traveled with her husband, her other daughter and her sister-in-law out to L.A., to attend the opening ceremonies and to watch the games. “It was amazing. You can equate it to what we watch on TV for the Olympics,” Eckel said. She was impressed by the camaraderie she witnessed between the teams from different countries, and was excited to hear the roar of cheers and applause for Team U.S.A. when the athletes walked out, she said. The Land O’ Lakes team took part in an event that featured athletes from 170 nations competing for international medals. The games included 21 Olympic-style sports. Getting to those games took a year of preparation and fundraising, with King playing a pivotal role in both. “It was definitely a year of a lot of training, fundraising, spreading the word about Special Olympics, those kinds of things,” she said. “We raised about $42,000,” King said. “It was hard work.” But, it was rewarding in more ways than one, she said. “We met new people through the fundraising,” she said. “The community really stepped up and helped us.” When the team left for the games, there was a big send-off at Land O’ Lakes High. “The day that we left was a year to the day that we actually found out that we were going,” King said. “We trained all year. During the summer, we trained three days a week for two hours, from the end of school until we left in July. “They (team members) spent practically the whole summer together. They got closer and closer the more that we were together. The bonds became stronger,” King said.

The experiences were equally enriching for both the Special Olympics athletes and their unified partners, King said. “They both did things they never have experienced before,” she said. “For everyone, it was being away from home for two complete weeks and living with people you hadn’t lived with,” she said. They also were living on a schedule beyond their control. They would rise at 4 a.m., have breakfast at 5 a.m. and board buses at assigned times. They also had to make scheduled appearances, King said. It was busy, but exciting, too. The team and three coaches went to Disney Studios and rode through Hollywood and Beverly Hills. They went to a four-day training camp in Riverside before arriving in L.A., and while in Riverside, they marched in a parade, King said. The players were treated like celebrities. People who didn’t know them, wanted to pose for photos with them, King said. They wanted to meet the athletes that were representing Team U.S.A. “Young kids wanted balls signed, shirts signed,” King said. Being part of the World Games and winning the bronze medal were exciting experiences, King said. But, she added: “The biggest reward was to see the accomplishments of the athletes, have them gain confidence in themselves, self-esteem, being able to travel, meet other people, make lifelong friendships,” she said. No doubt the World Games were a highlight in King’s coaching experience, but she also enjoys the day-to-day work that she does. She said she coaches to win, but also teaches other things along the way, such as sportsmanship, fair play and rules of the game.

“Water quality has long been a concern of garden clubs, said Pat Carver, environmental chairwoman of the garden club, and also water and wetlands District 8 chairwoman. She cites studies that have shown about 20 percent of the wastewater in fracking migrates underground, and can pollute wells and aquifers. A bill last year for an outright ban on fracking didn’t make it out of committee, Carver said. “We hope to see the bill again come up and be heard,” she said. Carver said Pasco commissioners were shown a video on fracking prior to the anticipated vote on the initial resolution, which was later pulled. Pasco County Commissioner Kathryn

Starkey said she needed more information. “My issue is, I’ve heard from one side. I’ve not heard from the other side,” she said. “I’d want to be more educated before I did something.” The issue is catching the attention of county residents, also. “I continue to get calls and letters from concerned constituents about fracking,” said Pasco County Commission Chairman Ted Schrader, who serves as chairman of Tampa Bay Water. The regional nonprofit supplies Tampa Bay area municipalities with drinking water. He noted that the water board recently approved a similar resolution. “I don’t see what the harm would be in having a resolution,” Schrader said.

When Vicky King took her coaching job at Land O’ Lakes High School in the mid1980s, it came with the duty of coaching athletes with special needs. She embraced the role. As time went on, she found herself becoming more and more involved. Her dedication — along with the efforts of the athletes she coaches — led to the selection of the Land O’ Lakes unified soccer team to represent Team U.S.A. at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, which yielded a bronze medal when the team defeated China, 2-1. The team competed in a division that has seven athletes on each side of the ball. It is a unified team, which pairs athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Special Olympics athletes play alongside partners, who are there to provide support and help. While members of the Land O’ Lakes came home clutching bronze medals, King, herself was in the spotlight on Sept. 26 when she was named the Florida Special Olympics Coach of the Year during a gala at Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. Sherry Wheelock, president and CEO of Special Olympics Florida, said King was singled out for the award because of her passion for athletes, both with and without disabilities. “She’s been a driving force for the success of Special Olympics Florida unified sports in Pasco County, but she’s also provided and trained more than 50 other Special Olympics soccer coaches throughout the state,”Wheelock said. “She’s also been responsible for introducing new schools to this unified competition format,” she added. King also coaches a traditional team at

Wiregrass Ranch soccer has lofty goals By Michael Murillo

Wiregrass Ranch boys soccer remaining schedule

mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

Before Wiregrass Ranch’s boys soccer team began its regular season, they tuned up with a couple of preseason matches. They won the first one 8-0, and raced out to an early lead in the second one. If you think that meant their coach was heaping praise upon them, you don’t know the expectations of Wiregrass Ranch soccer. “We were up 7-0 after 20 minutes (of the game), and you would have thought we were down 5-0,” recalled coach David Wilson. “If they do make mistakes as a team, they’re going to know about it.” The Bulls would win that preseason game 8-0, and won their first couple of regular-season matches by shutouts as well. If their goals are high, it’s because they’ve set a high standard to meet based on previous years. Last season, the team reached the state semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Chiles, 1-0. In the game, three of their starters hadn’t practiced the previous week due to injury and played at far less than 100 percent, Wilson said. Still, they played a close game and earned some respect from their coach. “You’ve got to get some breaks along the way, and we didn’t toward the end of the year. With that being said, I thought we played very well there and lost to the state champions,” Wilson said. Unfortunately, for the rest of their competition (The Bulls moved up to Class 5A this season, and there are a lot of strong teams in district 7), Wiregrass Ranch has most of that team intact for this season. They lost a couple of starters to academy programs (which preclude them from playing at the high school level) and also lost one substitute. But, the rest of the team returns with a goal of getting back to state

healthy and ready to play their best. Wilson acknowledges that the team looks prepared for another big year. He doesn’t like to put the spotlight on himself as coach. “I’d like to take some of the credit myself, but most of it is just what we’ve established as a program,” he said. Wilson’s modesty can’t hide the fact that his fingerprints are all over Wiregrass Ranch’s athletic successes. As the coach since the soccer program started, he’s built a foundation of discipline and focus that players learn when they enter the system. He’s also the coach of the boys tennis team, which claimed a co-championship a year ago, then won it outright this past season.

Bulldogs win the 9-Mile War THIS OUT

NO PLAYOFFS, BUT GREAT YEAR FOR WHARTON FOOTBALL

The Wildcats bounced back from a 4-6 campaign in 2014 with an impressive 8-2 mark in 2015. It just wasn’t quite enough to get them into the post-season. Their two losses, to Plant and Sickles, cost them in Class 7A District 8. Those two teams will continue on in the playoffs (despite having the same 8-2 overall record as Wharton), while the Wildcats will have to be content with a strong campaign. Still, it was one of their best seasons, and first eight-win mark since 2012. Wharton also racked up 313 points, most in their district. And even though they missed the playoffs, they finished strong, with a 42-0 win over Leto on Oct. 23 and a season-capping 38-22 win over Chamberlain on Nov. 6.

As a player, Zephyrhills head coach Reggie Roberts knew what it was like to beat Pasco. Now he knows what it feels like as a coach. It took six seasons into his tenure, but Roberts’ Bulldogs came out on top in the 9-Mile War with a 50-16 victory on Nov. 6. And while Zephyrhills (8-2) appears to be a better team than Pasco (4-6) this year, the Pirates didn’t make it easy for them.

country team won its first county title since 2008 at the Western Conference Championship on Oct. 13 at Al Lopez Park, 4810 N. Himes Ave. The Wildcats faced off against 35 public and private schools and came out with the low score (which is better in cross-country) of 44. Last year the team finished runner-up.

After a scoreless first, Pasco actually led 8-7 in the second quarter and only trailed 14-8 at halftime. But Zephyrhills’ high-scoring tendencies came out in the second half, as they scored 40 or more points for the eighth time this year. The season ended for Pasco with the loss, but there’s more football to be played for Zephyrhills. The Bulldogs will hit the road for a playoff game against Nature Coast Tech on Nov. 13.

Wilson is also the school’s athletic director, so if anybody deserves credit for the Bulls’ winning ways, it’s him. And, the players, of course. Good soccer programs are athletic and deep, and Wilson stresses fitness as a defining trait of his team. He wants players to be able to log consistent minutes, then sub out with little drop-off in talent. “Fitness-wise, you have to be great. Our outside midfielders and center midfielders have to be able to play both sides of the field,” he said. Wilson singled out senior Kyle Vandevelde as an outside midfielder who works hard and never gives up on the pitch. And, while Vandevelde acknowledges that focus on the field is important, he also believes that team bonding off the field is critical. “You can have the best players on the team, but if they don’t communicate, they don’t have good chemistry and they don’t like each other, it’s not going to matter at the end because they’re not going to be on the same page,”Vandevelde said. He believes that this year’s team is developing that special chemistry to go along with its superior talent, and the combination will give them an opportunity to go far in the playoffs. “As long as we have team chemistry, we can go as far as we want,” he said. Wilson agrees. He’s been coaching in various capacities for 30 years, and in that time he’s developed a good feel for a team’s potential. What he’s seen so far makes him optimistic. “There are surprises, but I know going into the year what we’re going to have. I know how were going to be,”Wilson said.“I think we have a team that’s capable to going back to the state final four.”

PET of the WEEK

Best friends forever

Jasper is a 2-year-old male cat, and Max is an 18-month-old male Cockapoo. These two are inseparable. They are always chasing each other around the house, wrestling and playing, or loving on one another. However, they do get into a little squabble every now and then, usually over food. The cat wants the dog’s food, and the dog wants the cat’s food, each thinking that the other has something better to eat. No big deal though, because these two are best friends forever! Jasper and Max are members of the Singletary family from Wesley Chapel.

percent of companies overall reporting a need to fill those positions. Wages also are increasing for skilled workers, the survey says. Fifty-six percent of companies are increasing base pay rates, 16 percent are paying more overtime, and 23 percent are providing bonuses, according to the survey. Contractors are eager to hire new employees, which will lead to quicker build times, DiPolito says, in the release. For more information, visit D-mar.com.

SWEETS FOR THE SWEET

The construction industry is facing a work force shortage with 86 percent of companies reporting difficulties in filling hourly and salaried positions, according to an October survey released by The Associated General Contractors of America. But Doreen DiPolito, owner and president of D-Mar General Contracting and Development, sees that as an opportunity, especially for skilled workers. “Today’s market conditions give skilled laborers the upper hand, allowing them to command better pay and perks,” DiPolito says in a Nov. 4 news release. The Clearwater-based company currently is expanding its projects. Among its past projects was the LSG Sky Chefs kitchen at Tampa International Airport. DMar also has completed projects for Hess, Dunkin’ Brands, Burger King and Circle K. The survey’s findings reveal that carpenters are in greatest demand with 73
