Bird-watchers will find plenty of pigeons in Zephyrhills. But there’s another type of bird that’s already completed its annual migration to the area: The snowbird. Snowbirds aren’t really birds, of course. They’re northerners who make their way south and live in the area for several months out of the year. From the winter months through around April, they make Florida their home. And many of them have residences in Zephyrhills. But according to Sonya Bradley, who estimates that the local population grows by around 30,000 people at this time of year, snowbirds weren’t getting the kind of welcome they deserve. She set out to change that with Snowbird Palooza. Bradley, the event coordinator for Simply Events of Tampa Bay, decided that a free event for part-time residents — though it was open to everyone — would be a good fit for the February schedule. It was held Feb. 11 at Zephyr Park, the same site as last month’s Zephyrhills Pie Festival & See SNOWBIRD, page7A

Montessori charter school to open this fall By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

When school begins in the fall, a new educational option will be available for parents of children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Garden Montessori School has been approved as a charter school in Pasco County, meaning that there’s no tuition for children attending the school. The new charter has its roots in a private pre-school and kindergarten that has been offering the Montessori approach to education since 2009. Parents of some of those children were interested in continuing to pursue that type of education in elementary school, and the school sought permission from Pasco County to open a charter elementary school. “It’s going to continue the Montessori that’s here,” said John Selover, a consultant to the school. “The genesis of the (charter) school was that a lot of the parents here were very interested in continuing the Montessori method of instruction. Montessori is much more than a method. It’s kind of a culture of PHOTO COURTESY OF GARDEN MONTESSORI SCHOOL its own,” he said. Navigating through today’s ‘Teen World’ isn’t easy By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Being a teenager has never been an easy time, but with today’s technology, poor decisions and impulsive actions can go viral in an instant. And, with Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter it’s so much easier for kids to get themselves into trouble these days — sometimes with deadly consequences. Teenagers aren’t the only ones facing new challenges in this cyber age. Parents also have trouble helping their children navigate through their teen years. To help both groups, Steinbrenner High School’s Parent Teacher Student Association recently held a “The World of a Teen,” forum to discuss challenges confronting today’s teenagers. A panel of experts covered issues ranging from dating, drugs, alcohol, stress, social media. They also talked frankly about such B.C. They said their goal was to inform parents about resources that may be helpful and to provide some practical advice as they deal with the daily challenges of raising a teenager. Lisa Kiev-Chen, who attended the forum with two of her three children, said the panelists provided plenty of food for thought. Two big things she took away from the event were this: “Talk less. Listen more,” she said. She said listening to the experts also reinforced her belief in the importance of sharing family meals together, even when the kids would prefer to do something else. Bilirakis wants to accelerate cures and treatments The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health, has introduced the Orphan Product Extensions Now Accelerating Cures & Treatments Act, also known as the OPEN ACT. The legislation seeks to provide incentives for drug makers and innovators to “repurpose” major market drugs for lifethreatening rare diseases and pediatric cancers. Passage of the legislation would open the door to the development of hundreds of safe, effective, and affordable treatments for rare disease patients, according to a news release from Bilirakis’ office. “There are over 7,000 rare diseases, impacting 30 million Americans – that is nearly one in 10 people,” Bilirakis said, in the release. “Over 95 percent of these diseases have no treatments, because each rare disease impacts a small number of patients.” His proposed legislation would change that. “My bill will leverage the free market to incentivize drug makers to repurpose drugs

to treat rare diseases,” Bilirakis said. “The OPEN ACT has the potential to result in hundreds of new drugs and treatments for individuals with rare diseases, as well as a new surge in Gus Bilirakis biotechnology jobs and investments. This bill can help millions of people by ensuring medications are safe and effective for rare conditions, and can be reimbursed through insurance coverage.” Bilirakis also noted that his proposed legislation enjoys broad support. There are 132 rare disease advocacy groups that support the OPEN ACT, according to Bilirakis. He estimates that the legislation could improve the quality of life for nearly 30 million Americans who suffer from rare diseases. Bilirakis also noted that his proposed legislation is the result of testimony he heard while hosting a local 21st Century Cures Roundtable in July 2014.

AROUND THE PARKS

February brings new ideas to Grand Horizons By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons

Activities continue with several new things going on. First, we have Colleen Crandall starting up a group to do paper crafting on Wednesdays at the community center. Here, people will work on their own projects such as card making, scrapbooking, journal writing, recipe collections and more. Colleen mentions that they would love new ideas, so if anyone has any, just mention it. The main idea of this class is to have fun. Another new and exciting game that we play is cribbage. This is hosted by Bill Quinn and Linda Rogers. Our first game was on Feb. 5, and it sure was fun.You really have to keep on your toes. Even beginners can enjoy this game as there are other players, who are well versed in playing, willing to teach. I just know that as time goes on, the amount of people looking to learn this fun game will grow. On Feb. 1, we had a Super Bowl party at the community center. There was chili and

Matter of Taste restaurant located in Dade City. There were 18 women who attended.A group picture was taken by one of the girls. This lunch was hosted by Rosie Semian, and our thanks go out to her for arranging this get-together. We have also added to our library DVDs. Brian Heidman was nice enough to undertake this project and build a cabinet for the community center. In addition to this, Linda Tutin is taking care of the books. We now have much reading material and DVDs to borrow and watch or read at our leisure. Our sincere thanks go out to Linda and Brian who take care of the books and DVDs that are in the library. On Feb. 7, Jim and Judi Leitzke, along with their helpers, put on the monthly egg n’ bag. The helpers were Galen and Sue Parker, Colleen Crandall, Clayton and Carol COURTESY OF TITA MAUK George, Jane and Maurice Thayer, Fred and The Lunch Bunch got together at A Matter of Taste restaurant in Dade City. Sam Sage, Doris Sutfin, Ken and Cheryl Leone, and Jim and Dora Mae Sinner. They cornbread and more. The kickoff started at Mexican Train or Rummikube, and all had a served over a hundred people. As usual it 6:30 p.m., and about 35 attended. If some fun time. was done to perfection, and everyone thorpeople decided not to watch the football On Feb. 3, several women attended the oughly enjoyed it. Our sincere thanks go out game, they created their own game of Lunch Bunch and had a very good time at A to all who worked on making this breakfast.

Celebrating the art of marriage By Sandra Gilbert-Abel Rainbow Village

Rainbow Village Resort had 78 couples celebrating 50-plus years of marriage. Every two years, we have a special dinner for them. Jean Kammermayer and Nancy Newton chaired this event and did a wonderful job of organizing everything that it takes to pull this event off. Each couple had their pictures taken, and these are special because sometimes this is the last picture of them taken together. The hall was decorated beautifully and the tables each had an anniversary cake on it to share with those at that table. Thanks to Linda Luce who baked and decorated them. A delicious chicken breast dinner was served. The longest married couple was honored and that was Don and Jan Stephens

who were married 67 years. Congratulations to all the couples that attended, and a big thank you to the committee for a job well done. A special fundraiser for Relay For Life was held at the social hall. Each lunch was a

hamburger or hot dog lunch, which included a special dessert. It was well attended. Our “Over the Rainbow for the Cure” team will participate in the upcoming event at the end of March at Zephyrhills High School. Mary Pierce and Pat March have

been really busy with fundraisers all season for this event. They collected more than $1,000 from the lunch fundraiser. Well done, ladies. We need to find a cure for all kinds of cancer.

We had our first luncheon to welcome new tenants to the park on Jan. 22. Lil Durham was the chairperson of the event. She and her helpers did a great job. More than 40 people were in attendance and everyone had a fun time. It started with a lunch of subs, chips, fruit and brownies, followed by games. We played musical chairs. After all, who says people over a certain age can’t play musical chairs? Maura Kempa wrote a song about our park called “Palm View Gardens,” and it was sung by Louva King. There was a lot of conversation between everyone getting to meet new people. We are happy to have new people come to our park, and we want them to now they are welcome and appreciated here. We have had Jimmy Smith, as Elvis, as entertainment. He put on a great show complete with swivel hips. Our bus has been traveling, also. Auburndale Flea Market and St. John’s Pass were recent destinations. Busloads of folks have been traveling to Hooter’s and the Webster Flea Market. Bonnie has been doing a wonderful job providing the entertainment and driving the bus. Thanks to Chuck Gould for another successful dance. Flashback provided dance music for a packed house. Everyone was successful in getting rid of or adding to their treasures at the annual yard sale.We sometimes call it exchange day here! The heavy traffic was handled well. The volunteers did a fine job of directing the traffic.A big thank you to you. Our library looks sparkling with new carpets. The gals are doing a good job of

keeping all the books in the right order. Euchre, cribbage and bid euchre have been bustling with full tables. Pinochle, nickel bingo on Saturdays, and many other new games, have been added to our activities. Thank you to the volunteers that make these activities possible. The shuffleboard courts are full throughout the days and evening. The choir is practicing on Thursdays at 10 a.m. More members are always welcome. Their beautiful voices can be heard each Sunday from 9:45 a.m. to 10 a.m., as well, during the church service. Many of our men folk join together each morning for a coffee and donuts. This is know as our Liar’s Club since stories are traded, of course. Ted Cote was the lucky winner of a quilt. He donated it back to be raffled off. The proceeds of $200 from that raffle were donated to The Disabled Warriors. Thank you, Ted. There was a spaghetti dinner Feb. 14. All the proceeds from this dinner were donated to our local fire company. Thank you to them for their service. Breakfast is each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. There is a different menu each week with donuts and coffee available each week. Our business meeting is at 8:30 a.m. Be well! Bless our friends and neighbors.

SNOWBIRD, from page 1A Community Bake Off, which was also organized by Simply Events. Bradley estimates that between 500 and 600 people attended the first Snowbird Palooza, which featured various arts and craft booths that coincided with the biweekly farmer’s market held at the park. There also was live music and a bingo pavilion, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., that offered the chance to buy cards to play the popular game and win some money. “It was a good day,” Bradley said.“People stayed, which was awesome, because we had entertainment for them and different things for them to do.” Snowbird Palooza offered some health benefits as well. Bayfront Health Dade City had representatives on hand to administer blood

pressure checks and hearing tests for attendees. Nurses also were available to interpret results and answer questions. Simply Events learned from the first pie festival about how to improve it for next year, and Snowbird Palooza was no different. The 2016 version will have expanded medical screenings, Bradley said, as well as more input from local mobile home communities. She’d like one of them to run the bingo games and help get the word out about the games and the event in general. Bradley was pleased to see some younger people who had stopped by the farmer’s market or were running through the park also having a good time. But with a large senior population, she wants to get the word out for next year to make Snowbird Palooza even bigger and better-attended than the first one. “It’s a community with an older soul. It just makes sense for this time of the year,”

MONTESSORI, from page 1A director, said, Montessori focuses on teaching the whole child. “It’s based on grace and courtesy,” she said. The children do a lot of hands’ on work, and the work is designed to build on previous work that has been accomplished. “In terms of the social piece, it is a community involvement,” she said. One of the values of a Montessori education is giving back to the community in which the school sits. “We have permission to open with up to 270 students,” Selover said. It will begin with kindergarten through second grade and will add a grade each year, until its fifth year of operation, when it will reach 540. One key difference between this school and traditional public schools is that the children will be taught in multi-age classrooms and they have the same teacher for three years. “We’re meeting the kid where they’re at,” Selover said. “Everybody knows the child. They have some history with the child. They’re able to really, truly meet them where they’re at,” he said. Pla-Tschantz explained: “It’s really not teacher-centered. It’s child-centered, with the guidance, of course, from teachers. Teachers observe children closely and keep good records, to keep tuned into the child’s progress and where they should be, she said. Teachers look at benchmarks to make sure that children are reaching them and when they’re not, they ask themselves why children aren’t reaching them and they make recommendations on what they can do to make progress. Besides paying close attention to a child’s progress, there’s also peer teaching. The school also pays attention to how

Parent information session

Garden Montessori Charter School is a tuition-free, public kindergarten through sixth grade school slated to open in August, serving the Wesley Chapel area. There will be a parent information session Feb. 18 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library, 2818 Collier Parkway. General information and enrollment details can be found online at GMCSWC.weebly.com.

the children learn. “Are they visual? Are they tactile? Are they auditory?” Pla-Tschantz said. Or, perhaps like most people, they learn using more than one style. The school’s charter application was approved for five years. Applications are being accepted through Feb. 27. School officials expect more applications to come in than there are slots, so a lottery system will be used to select the students. A site has not yet been acquired, but officials expect that to be done soon. Initially, the school will use portable classrooms. Parents can attend a parent meeting on Feb. 18, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Land O’ Lakes Branch Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, to learn more about the school. Questions parents have asked at previous meetings include such practical considerations as the start and end times of school, whether there is before and after care and what kind of lunch program is available, Selover said. The school will follow the Pasco County code of student conduct. It also will serve Pasco County school lunches, providing free or reduced-price lunches to those qualify. It will not provide transportation, but will help parents who want to arrange car pools.

Hard times that sap your energy and leave you frustrated are an inevitable part of life. Maybe you lost a job. Maybe your finances took a turn for the worse. Maybe your personal life is in disarray or a health problem emerged forcing a lifestyle change. Such setbacks can leave people feeling afraid, uncertain, angry or unsatisfied, says Darlene Hunter, a renowned speaker and author of “Win-Ability, Navigating through Life’s Challenges with a Winning Attitude,” (www.darlenehunter.com). Overcoming those emotions, she says, comes down to a person’s mindset and perspective. “Your attitude is a critical factor that can either hold you back or help you move forward,” Hunter says. “Everyone needs to take the time to do a pulse check on where they are in their thinking. Is it positive or negative?” It’s easy to be positive when everything is going well, but the real trick is persevering when things go awry. so you can continue to strive toward your goals. “The important thing to remember is that we cannot give up just because things do not work out the way we want,” Hunter says. “We must be persistent and press our way through to the end.” Hunter offers five tips that can help change your thinking, which in turn will change your behavior and, ultimately, change your results. • Make plans. To live your dream, you need to know what you want and have a plan for getting there. “Planning your day, week and month are critical ingredients to living your dream and purpose,” Hunter says. The “how” and “why” elements are important factors in planning, as they guide you in the direction you want to go. • Set goals. Once you set goals, the next

step is to work on completing them. That’s why it’s important to set goals you can accomplish. Each time you can check a goal off your list, you are one step closer to what you ultimately want to achieve. “The sense of accomplishment that comes from reaching even the smallest goals will help you keep moving and striving to get your desired end,” Hunter says. • Go after results. When you are driven, Hunter says, you have a compulsive and urgent desire to accomplish what you are seeking, whether it’s a bonus, a promotion, additional knowledge in a particular area or some other goal. The important factor is to always know what you are seeking. Resultsdriven people focus on meeting objectives and delivering on the goals they set. • Possess a winning attitude. You must be determined, dedicated and devoted to succeed. “You should never give up on your goals and dreams simply because something goes wrong or you are not getting where you hoped to be fast enough,” Hunter says. • Keep focused. When you are focused, you have a clear perception and understanding of what you want to accomplish and where you need to go to get there. “Think about long-distance runners who will run a 26-mile marathon,” Hunter says. “They find their pace and then they stay with it. They may get weary and tired, but they find their zone and stay focused and concentrate on what is needed to get to the end.” “Plenty of stories can be told about people who failed in the beginning, but made it to the top of their profession because they did not give up after being told they weren’t good enough,” Hunter says. “The ability to keep trying and pushing no matter how many failures or obstacles you hit is the power of perseverance and is what ‘Win-Ability’ is all about.” Source: newsandexperts.com

Helping the hard of hearing PHSC names finalists in find out about scholarships search for new president The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida, Inc. and Deaflinx, an online resource for information on deafness, deaf culture, and American Sign Language, are collaborating to provide information to persons who are hard of hearing or deaf so that they can learn more about educational scholarships available to them. Both Deaflinx and the Sertoma Foundation view deafness as a condition that produces a subculture that should be celebrated, rather than as being a disability. Whether you are a deaf person or someone with hearing loss or you just want to learn about deaf culture or deaf society, both Sertoma and Deaflinx can help, and this is true especially if you are heading off to college. Through an online site called Vicaps (http://www.vicaps.com/scholarship-information.php), a listing of 30 scholarships and grants provide more opportunities than ever for students who are hard of hearing or deaf. Obtaining some scholarships can be expensive even despite their availability. For this reason, Sertoma Foundation felt it is important that deaf or hard of hearing students are aware of the many resources that are available through Vicaps, a transcription service for over 40 years that now provides

a variety of services for the deaf community. While scholarships vary in what they will and will not cover, Vicaps shares a list that can provide much needed financial relief and the opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing students to achieve their goals for higher education. “Hearing loss can be devastating at any age and can hinder a person’s development and ability to succeed in life,” Craig McCart, executive director of the foundation, said in a news release. “The services provided by the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation also include looking outside the box for any opportunity to improve their lives, like providing information about available scholarships especially with them in mind,” McCart added. Hearing Loss is the most common birth defect nationally. Early detection and intervention is vital for an infant to have the opportunity to access speech and other sounds for learning and brain development. The mission of the Sertoma Speech & Hearing Foundation of Florida is to “enhance individual potential and quality of life through improved hearing.” For more information about Sertoma Foundation, visit FamilyHearingHelp.org. To learning more about Deaflinx, visit Deaflinx.com.

Saint Anthony School celebrates historic milestone By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

Saint Anthony School, in San Antonio, celebrated a milestone in its history on Feb.9, when the Rev. Robert N. Lynch, Bishop of Saint Petersburg presided over a Mass and dedicated the school’s new building. “It was just so beautiful,” said Sister Alice Ottapurackal, the school’s principal. In addition to the bishop, there were 13 priests and four deacons taking part in the Mass. “You should have seen the excitement in the faces of the children. I don’t think they ever saw so many priests,” Ottapurackal said. In fact, there were so many that six-yearold student Kolbe Williams, said, “I couldn’t really count them.” Eight-year-old Colton Courtade enjoyed the school’s celebration and the picnic afterward. But he was especially pleased to be an altar boy. “I was serving with them (the priests). It was an honor,” Courtade said. Both children and adults alike said they are pleased with the new brick building, which was designed to architecturally match the existing brick building, constructed in 1922. Some of the new building’s advantages are the larger classrooms, better lighting and improved technology, they said. “It’s bright and cheerful,” said 8-year-old Catalina Espada. It has more space and is organized well, she added. First-grade teacher Franchesca Blocher, is delighted with the new building. “Oh my goodness, it’s awesome. This is my 17th year at Saint Anthony. It is a true blessing to have this new classroom, this new building. “The children are so excited to be in the classroom. They love coming in every day. I love coming in every day,” said Blocher, who commutes from Land O’ Lakes to teach at Saint Anthony School. “Having all of the classes together in the same building, it really is very nice. We can travel through the building and see the older children and they can be an example for my students,” Blocher said. Katie Kenny, 6, said she’s new to the

Saint Anthony School held a dedication celebration on Feb. 9 to celebrate the opening of its new classroom building.

school this year and is really enjoying the experience. She said she likes her new friends, her teacher, and the new building, too. Like many of the younger children, 6year-old Ryan Potthast is impressed by the lockers that sixth-, seventh- and eighthgraders have in the new building. Potthast also thinks it’s cool that the school has an elevator. Parents are also impressed. “It’s a dream come true,” said Mary Kay Connor, whose daughter, Meg, is in second grade. Connor has been associated with Saint Anthony School for 16 years. Her daughters Katie, Anne Marie and Claire already went through their elementary school years there.

Sister Alice Ottapurackal, who is principal of Saint Anthony School and Franchesca Blocher, who is a first-grade teacher there, work with children in Blocher’s classroom. The new building features larger classrooms which have better lighting than the school’s old building, which was constructed in 1922.

The new building allows the school to increase the size of its enrollment from a maximum of 225 to a maximum of 270, Ottapurackal said. “We still have only one class per grade,” she said, but the larger classrooms can accommodate more students. It also features a new science lab, Ottapurackal said. The school serves kindergarten through eighth grade. It doesn’t have early childhood because another Diocesan school nearby offers that, the principal added. She also noted that the St. Petersburg Diocese’s Forward in Faith Capital Campaign made it possible to build the new building. Next on the agenda is remodeling of the old building, Ottapurackal said. The library is now sharing space with the Spanish class, but it will be moved to the old building once that is remodeled. Once that project is done, the cafeteria, library, computer lab, Spanish, music and art will be in the old building, the principal said. The old building is being used for art and lunch now, but once the renovation begins, the parish center will be used for art and lunch. The dedication festivities drew hundreds

of people, including former graduates of a school that has served generations of families since its inception in 1883. It’s a community that takes tremendous pride in the school and is always willing to help, Ottapurackal said. In fact, on moving day which was held Jan. 6 over the Christmas break, volunteers — including students — stepped forward to help. “It’s just amazing,” she said. The school didn’t even have to hire a crew. “That’s the beauty of this community,” Ottapurackal said. Besides providing free labor, they even brought equipment and boxes to use in the move. “Even the children were carrying their books,” she said. She smiled broadly, as she described the day of the school’s dedication. “We had Mass, then a dedication ceremony outside the building, then right after that an open house and then a reception back in the parish center. Our children had a picnic in the park. “It was just a beautiful day,” she said. Even the weather cooperated, Ottapurackal said. “We didn’t have rain until everything was over.”

PHSC’s Winterling is Regional Coach of the Year By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

When Pasco-Hernando State College’s baseball coach Steve Winterling found out that he was named regional coach of the year, he kept it a secret from almost everybody. “I laid low about it,” Winterling admitted. “I’m not an egomaniac-type person,” he said. Even some of his friends got mad at him because he didn’t tell them about it. Aside from informing his superiors at the college in September, Winterling didn’t really talk about it until he was officially given the award last month. But winning the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Regional Coach of the Year award caps a great 2014 for the coach, who is now in his 24th season at the school. Last season, the team reached the NJCAA Division II College World Series for the first time in school history, finishing fourth in the country. Besides earning the coach some recognition, Winterling said it also put the school on the map for recruits seeking a school with a successful track record. As a World Series-caliber program, he had an easier time finding interested athletes and can field a stronger team than he could before. While he’s not wild about talking about himself, Winterling — who also serves as PHSC’s athletic director — said he’s changed a bit over the decades. He’s slightly mellower now than his earlier days, when he was a bit harder on the players. He said he maintains that competitive fire, but is also focused on building a strong foundation of expectations and then finding players who meet them. “My philosophy is now basically I teach them what I can, and get the good, quality kids who like my principles: Being cleancut, follow the rules and regulations, do the job academically and be good student-athletes,” he said. Those are the types of athletes that got the Conquistadors to the World Series last year, and the type Winterling hopes will

help them get back this year. The team returns two pitchers, three infielders and an outfielder from last year’s roster, and he believes the World Series experience will help the 2015 team. The recruiting class also helped add more depth than he typically has had at his disposal. Overall, the team is more confident now that they’re building on the school’s best-ever finish. As a coach, Winterling, of course, doesn’t get to play in the games. But he enjoys the strategy in baseball, and the challenge that different scenarios provide as the games and

the season unfold. He credits Florida State University baseball coach Mike Martin, where Winterling served as an assistant for six years, for encouraging him to maximize strategic advantages. “When I was at Florida State I learned from coach Martin so much. The discipline, and always trying to be a step ahead of the thinking process of your opponent,” he said. “The one thing about baseball that I’ve always enjoyed is there’s a lot of thinking to it. You can’t be distracted. I leaned from him that I can focus on the aspects of what’s going to give us an edge.”

SEASON ENDS FOR SUCCESSFUL SOCCER TEAMS

Sunlake High School and Wiregrass Ranch High School saw their boys’ soccer teams reach the state semi-finals. But they were defeated there. On Feb. 12, the Sunlake Seahawks (28-2) fell to the undefeated Choctawhatchee Indians (29-0-1) in Class 3A competition, 2-0. The next day, the Wiregrass Ranch Bulls (252-1) dropped a 1-0 contest to the Chiles Timberwolves (29-3) in a Class 4A matchup. While the teams are disappointed they didn’t reach the finals, at least they know that they lost to the state’s best: Both Choctawhatchee and Chiles went on to win the state title in their respective classes. And to be one of the last four teams standing in their tournaments is a major accomplishment for both Sunlake and Wiregrass Ranch.

Apparently, since there’s no edge gained by focusing on his award, Winterling chooses not to think about it too much. He’s appreciative of the acknowledgement, but prefers to save the reminiscing for the future. Now, his focus is on getting his team, whose season started in late January, back to the World Series. The team won four of its first five games in the New Year. “It’s definitely a nice honor, and it’s attributed, obviously, to the players last year and what they accomplished,” Winterling said of the award. “I think once I retire, then I’ll be able to look back and appreciate it more.”
