Timothy Beard has been selected to become Pasco-Hernando State College’s fourth president. The PHSC District Board of Trustees announced its choice at the conclusion of its presidential search, on March 18. Beard, vice president of student development and enrollment management at PHSC in New Port Richey, was among a field of four finalists. The other finalists worked at Klamath Community College in Klamath Falls, Oregon; West Virginia University at Parkersburg, Parkersburg,West Virginia; and, St. Petersburg College in St. Petersburg. They decided to promote Beard to replace Katherine Johnson, who is retiring on June 30. Beard’s appointment becomes effective July 1, pending the successful outcome of contract negotiations. “We are pleased to extend an offer for the presidential position to Dr. Beard,” Ed
Blommel, PHSC District Board of Trustees and presidential search committee chair, said in a release. “As a senior administrator at PHSC for the past eight years, he is already familiar with the college and has an Timothy Beard understanding of its strategic goals and mission.” Beard is delighted to be stepping into the college’s leadership role. “This is a surreal opportunity,” said Beard, who has worked for the college since 2007 and expects to build on the good work that has been accomplished there. Before joining PHSC, Beard was vice president and dean of student affairs at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, and director of student affairs and enrollment management at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. He earned his doctoral degree in rehabil-
itation counseling, with a special emphasis in higher education administration, from Florida State University in Tallahassee. He also has a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from FSU. Pasco-Hernando State College has more than 15,000 students and about 700 employees, including adjunct faculty. Pasco-Hernando State College awards certificates, diplomas, associate degrees and baccalaureate degrees. The college has campuses in Dade City, Wesley Chapel, New Port Richey, Spring Hill and Brooksville. Beard said he plans to pursue an initiative that would enlist the help of faith communities and other organizations to help support students, through scholarships and in other ways. He is looking forward to strengthening the ties between PHSC and the communities it serves. “I really want to bring the community into the college and the college into the community,” Beard said.

June Wentworth went looking for a pleasant walk around the lake on a sunny morning at Zephyr Park and before she knew it, the 83-year-old found herself in the arms of a dance partner who glided her through the bittersweet memories of Garth Brooks’“The Dance.” Gospel singer Kris Pierce had just sold a copy of his CD to Wentworth who was impressed enough to say yes to her surprise of the day – the singer’s invitation to dance. “He’s got a great voice,” said Wentworth, a Maine native visiting Zephyrhills for a couple of weeks. She had stopped at Zephyr Park for that
quiet walk and discovered the Zephyrhills Artsy Farmers’ Market, off State Road 54 at 38116 Fifth Ave. Pierce and his wife, Melissa, were at the market for their second time. The singer is a frequent entertainer at the Fraternal Order of the Eagles and Ralph’s Travel Park, both in Zephyrhills. During the farmers’ market, Pierce sang covers and original tunes under the gazebo at water’s edge. His wife Melissa sat at a display table covered with her husband’s CDs, collections that range from gospel songs to covers of Elvis Presley. “I do a little bit of everything,” Pierce said. “Pretty much everything but heavy metal and rap.” He was among about 15 vendors who
set up tents and displays under the cathedral canopy of oak trees near the park’s entrance. The market got its start downtown in Times Square Park on Fifth Avenue with just a few vendors about a year ago. In October, the market moved to the larger and more tranquil setting of Zephyr Park. The event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., on the second Wednesday and fourth Saturday of each month. Beginning April 25, the market will become a fourth-Saturday-only event. The market, staged by Largo-based Simply Events, needs more vendors. Owner Sonya Bradley hopes to eventualSee MARKET, page 9A

When most people think of Girl Scouts, they tend to picture little girls selling cookies in front of the local store or singing in a camp sing-along. It’s unlikely they envision a young woman working on a project to improve traffic safety. But that’s exactly what Wesley High School student Samantha Politano is doing. She’s launched a three-year project aimed at making life safer for the students who attend Wesley Chapel High School, Thomas Weightman Middle School and Wesley Chapel Elementary School. She’s not only interested in making life safer for students. She wants to improve the conditions for all drivers — parents dropping off and picking up their kids, bus drivers making their rounds, and faculty members and students who drive to school. In addition to making Wells Road safer, she’s also aiming to spread the message of safe driving habits. She hopes her efforts will encourage drivers to buckle up and put away their cellphones, which will reduce their chance of being injured or having an accident. She also thinks it would be neat to give Wells Road a second, honorary name — Wildcat Way — to pay tribute to the mascot for the elementary, middle and high schools. Politano is tackling the traffic safety issue on a number of fronts and has enlisted the aid of Jeff Novotny, former president of the Greater Wesley Chapel
help because he’s married to her thirdgrade teacher, Amanda, who teaches at Wesley Chapel Elementary. “Mrs. Novotny was one of the most influential teachers, ever,” Politano said. So, why would a teenager take on an issue like traffic safety? In Politano’s case, it’s because she’s striving to attain a Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. The distinction is based on the completion of a project that focuses on making a difference. Politano said her decision to work on traffic issues was partly inspired by a friend of hers who was injured when a car backed into her in the parking lot. She said she also heard about a freshman who was struck by a vehicle on Wells Road. It’s not hard to see that Wells Road has traffic issues during student arrival and departure times. On one recent afternoon, parents arrived at least 20 minutes before school got out, parking their cars on the edges B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTO on both sides of Wells Road. Melissa Huston used to spend 90 minutes each way, getting back and forth from work. She lives in Lutz and was commuting to a job in St. Petersburg. “It was debilitating, mentally, Huston said.“There were days that were awful driving there. She and her husband, Doug, have two children.Tyler attends McKitrick Elementary School and Brandon is in preschool. Besides getting stuck in traffic, Huston had the additional stress of not being sure she’d be able to pick up her children from child care on time. “You’re trying to get to your kids at night, and you’re watching the clock and you’re sitting in it (traffic) — and God forbid, there’s an accident and you’re panicking. “I don’t miss any of that, said Huston, who has been working at home for Dell, since July 2013. Huston had worked for Home Shopping Network in St. Petersburg for many years and made the switch to a Tampa company, which announced that it was moving to St. Petersburg. At the time, Tyler was getting ready to start kindergarten, and Huston decided she would look for a stay-at-home job. “When they’re in preschool, they don’t have homework. They don’t have as many activities, Huston said. But she knew she wanted to be able to help with homework and attend school activities, and couldn’t think of a way to do that and still have a long commute. So, she began looking for stay-at-home work opportunities. She had heard about the scams involving work from home jobs. “That was my big concern:Are they legitimate? she said. She had reason to worry. The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers to be skeptical when checking out work-at-home opportunities. Many of them require an upfront investment, and many fail to live up to their claims. As Huston was researching stay-at-home jobs, she came across a website called FlexJobs.com. The company, which is a 100 percent, virtual remote company, was founded in 2007 in Boulder, Colorado, by Sara Sutton Fall, according to Kathy Gardner, the company’s PR Manager, who is based in Stamford, Connecticut. FlexJobs.com essentially offers a sub-
If you’re thinking about following up on a work-at-home offer, do your homework. Before pursuing a stay-at-home work opportunity, ask: • What tasks will I have to perform? Be sure you have a list of every step of the job. • Will I be paid a salary or paid on commission? • If the job involves purchasing some type of program, ask what is the basis for your claims about my likely earnings? What documents can you show me to prove your claims are true before I give you any money? • Who will pay me? When will I get my first paycheck? • What is the total cost of this work-athome program, including supplies, equipment and membership fees? What will I get for my money?

scription service to provide information about available jobs to job seekers. The fees are $14.95 a month, $29.95 for three months and $69.95 for 12 months. The job seekers, who are the company’s clients, pay the fee to gain access to its postings and are guaranteed that the site is 100 percent free of scams and advertisements, Gardner said. Huston said the service helped her find her job. FlexJobs.com has helped more than 1 million people in their job searches, Gardner said. And, according to a recent analysis of its data, it turns out that Florida ranks fourth in the nation for recruitment by companies for telecommuters, Gardner added. Huston said the site offers listings on all types of jobs, ranging from contract work to part-time to full-time salaried positions. Before signing up for the service, Huston said, she had not thought to look for a telecommuting opportunity on Dell’s website. Huston, whose background is in marketing analytics, has the kind of job that lends itself to working remotely. “My job is all computer-based, she said. “There is some face-to-face talking, but it’s predominantly data driven. She works with a team stationed around the globe.
“We have the ability to share our screens.Through our instant messaging tool, we can share our desktops, so, if I’m looking at this and I want to explain something with this spreadsheet, I can share it. “We utilize that a lot to talk through things. “It’s amazing what you can accomplish, she said. Still, since they don’t share the same physical space, the working relationships that occur naturally in an office have to be nurtured, she said. “You have to make an effort to stay connected with your colleagues, Huston said. Working from home is not for everyone, she noted. The key to working at home, she said, is to establish a schedule. “It can’t just be work whenever you feel like it, because this is a regular job.You have to establish a good routine of when you start your day and when you end it, too, she said. While some people working at home might tend to slack off, others may be too intense. It’s easy to work 80 hours or more because you’re literally always at the office, she said. It’s important to find a balance and to maintain it, Huston said. There’s a lot to be said for being able to

check on a project or share information after normal working hours by popping into your home office and spending 5 minutes to take care of a task, Huston said. Besides having a regular work routine, it’s important to have a separate space designated for your office, she said. It’s important to be able to close the door and focus on work. “It’s a corporate job. It is a big company. There are demands, she said. Huston loves being able to eliminate the long commute and focus on her work and family. She’s been able to be involved in some volunteer work at McKitrick Elementary and she’s nearby, if there’s ever an emergency, she said. In fact, she added,“my youngest, actually, broke his leg at his pre-school, and I was there in 2 seconds because it was around the corner. Working at home is not for everyone, Huston said. But she added:“For the place that I’m at in my life, it’s a good fit.

See an animated movie for free! On the Cheap By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
A
n outside movie event can be a great idea, but it depends on when you do it. If it’s too early in the year, you might catch one of our really cold weekends. If it’s closer to summer, you risk rain, sweltering heat and more rain. Did I mention the rain? You have to time things just right. Fortunately, this happens to be the right time. The weather is nice, but it’s not too humid yet. And because it’s the right time, Avalon Park West, a community in Wesley Chapel, has a monthly “Movie Under the Stars” series that’s worth checking out. On the fourth Friday of each month they show a family friendly movie. Last month, it was “Planes,” and on March 27, it will be “The Boxtrolls,” an animated film that was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. So you show up and watch a movie. Is that it? Well, not quite. Not only is the movie free (this is “On the Cheap,” so you might have guessed that part) but they serve free popcorn as well. They also have free lemonade and hot cocoa, too. And since it’s out by their pool, you can grab one of the pool chairs, or bring your own chairs or blanket. You can even bring your own cooler, and enjoy snacks and drinks from home. In other words, no $5 drinks and $6 popcorn like you’ll find at the regular movie theater. You can enjoy some nice weather with family or friends and not spend a lot of money to do it.Technically, you don’t have to spend any money at all. How often can you take the whole family out to an event and not lose a penny? As most of you know, that’s rare. So we need to take advantage of those evenings when we find them.
In case you were wondering, you don’t have to live in Avalon Park West to go. It’s open to everyone. All you have to do is like movies and free things to do. And that covers a lot of us. Before the movie starts on the blow-up screen, a disc jockey gets the kids ready for the show with some music and dancing. So you might want to show up a little early to get a good spot and enjoy the entertainment before the movie begins. And it doesn’t end too late, so everyone can make their bedtimes, too. Finding cheap things to do isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. And it’s nice to come across something local that’s completely free all the way around. For children and adults who like animated films, this is a great way to spend a Friday night. By the way, there are only a couple of
dates left before the event takes a break until later in the year. If you can’t make it on March 27, you can try again on April 24 when they show “Big Hero 6.” That movie beat “The Boxtrolls” for Best Animated Feature. Since the next two films were both nominated for Academy Awards, you might want to attend both. It’s the same price, after all: Nothing. Avalon Park West is located at 5216 Autumn Ridge Drive in Wesley Chapel. For more information, call (813) 783-1515 or visit AvalonParkWest.com.

Ice cream sundaes a treat on hot, humid days By Helene Rubenstein Grand Horizons
On March 12, we had our HOA meeting at the community center. We discussed old and new business. There was a large turnout of approximately 70 to 80 people. After the meeting, many people stayed to play euchre. I used to play this game, and it is fun and from what I understand, there are now many residents who play this competitive game. So if you are looking for a fun-packed game, any resident and/or visitor of Grand Horizons can come and join them. On March 13, we had our monthly lunch connoisseur at Francesco’s in Dade City. Galen and Susan Parker hosted this luncheon with help from Sam and Fred Sage, and I must say they did a marvelous job.About 38 people had a lovely afternoon with a menu that had a little of everything. It is hard making a decision. After the luncheon, we could go shopping in Dade City, as there were plenty of shops, and there definitely was something for every-

ple at the community center. It was on this day that we had an ice cream social hosted by Andy Gisondi, Del O’Hara, and Tom and Laurie Carter. Everyone enjoys their ice cream, and they had ice cream sundaes in addition to root beer floats. Every topping imaginable was there and some of them were strawberries, cherries, bananas cut in slices, pineapple, coconut, chocolate and caramel syrup (regular and lo-cal), whipped topping (also regular and lo-fat), sprinkles in color and chocolate, nuts, miniature marshmallows and more. It was pure heaven, and we got to see several creations that were made by individuals that were overflowing with this special dessert. Before tables were called to get their ice cream or floats, they also had a table filled with delicious cookies made by Andy and Del, lemonade and coffee. It was done to perfection, and all who came to this ice cream social had one terrific time.

The Saturday Music Jam draws a large crowd, just as the Friday one does.
Music for your ears at Happy Days By Ian Marwick Happy Days RV Park
What a lucky streak we must have been on the day Jim and Nevaida Howe rolled into the park years ago. Jim is the godfather of our Friday afternoon Fiddle Jam at the hall. This has been a tradition for many local bow benders along with a mélange of other string instruments players. Over the next year or so, this blossomed with an expansion to the Open Jam on Saturdays. This premise encourages a broader range of talent than Friday, with guitars, drums and play what “ya brought,” and encourages singers to join in. Larry and Muriel Oakes have inherited Saturdays. Each of these venues demands a lot of personal time for set up and takedowns, as well as hall cleaning. A big hoorah for all their efforts to provide this and all who will help them with the chores. It is for all to enjoy, and it is free. Friday’s Fiddle Jam has its own group of
followers, and is always open to the old classic country style of music fan. Saturday, with an open concept, is now providing a broader music experience — the past road guy, some long-in-the-tooth axe pickers, the learners, the singers, the smaller groups that love the opportunity to entertain each other, as well as the crowd. Come and fill those seats around them. It is a toe-tapping good time. They will appreciate it and encourage this to grow into its full potential. For your information, last week we had 25 players, and nine were from inside the park.Wonderful! Karaoke, although it does not demand the talent to play an instrument or sing like a professional, does provide a musical funfilled night for those who want to flex their shower voices and air guitar skills. Our own Nancy Warren encourages one and all to try their hand at it. Some need a little coaxing, but the nights are always a success. Endangered leopard born at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
An endangered clouded leopard gave birth to a single male kitten on March 7 at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo, according to zoo officials. As the first kitten born to the zoo’s pair of 4-year-old clouded leopards, this offspring introduces new genetics into the managed population in North America. The parent leopards, Yim (male) and Malee (female), arrived at the Zoo in 2011 at 6 months of age. The Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP) paired the two as potential mates, a news release says. The Clouded Leopard Species Survival Plan is a program of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that is designed to support the conservation of select wildlife species at risk of extinction. There are now a total of 87 clouded leopards in 22 AZA-accredited institutions. “This birth signifies a milestone accomplishment in our conservation programs at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo,” according to Larry Killmar, vice president of animal science and conservation for the zoo.“Species survival programs for animals like clouded leopards take years of planning, development and staff commitment. This kitten will contribute to the long term viability of our conservation efforts within the managed population, as well as range countries.” Members of the zoo’s animal care staff were on watch for the birth following breeding and gestation estimates of approximately three months. Shortly after its birth, the zoo’s animal care team observed the kitten to be a male, and are now providing around-the-clock care. Clouded leopard kittens are hand-reared to facilitate introductions to potential mates at 6 months of age, as with Yim and Malee, the news release says. Within the AZA-managed population, rearing the kittens by hand for socialization and introducing them to potential mates at a young age has been very successful in reducing fatal attacks by aggressive adult males.

Lowry Park Zoo’s animal care team noticed shortly after this kitten’s birth that it is a male. The kitten is getting around-the-clock care.
The kitten is feeding well and is gaining weight. It was 300 grams at birth and weighed in at 565 grams on day 10. He is expected to be strong enough to begin walking within the next few weeks. He will be hand-reared until weaned at about 3 months of age.At that time the AZA SSP will make a determination about his future home. Clouded leopards are the smallest of the “big cats,” weighing 30- 50 pounds in adulthood and measuring about 5-feet long, including its long tail. Native to Southeast Asia, clouded leopards are found in forests and rainforests. They are known as shy and reclusive cats.As a forest-dependent species, the leopard’s native range is undergoing the world’s fastest regional deforestation rates. High levels of hunting and poaching also make the species vulnerable to extinction.

their wares across a folding table. It was their first time at the Zephyrhills’ market. “I’ve always wanted a sewing machine,” said Jones who lives in Wesley Chapel.“One day I bought one. I’m self-taught, a lot of YouTubes (YouTube videos).” Natalie Avila, 21, Kornilous Donnell Sr., 25, and their 1-year-old toddler, Kornilous Donnell Jr., all of Zephyrhills, enjoyed a stroll through the park, cool drinks and fruit from Come Under the Yum Yum Tree, a produce company from Brandon. “It adds to the community,” said Donnell Sr., “I like that they are getting vendors that are able to sell produce. Zephyrhills needs more businesses anyway. This is great.” Pam Nethers of American Pride sold jewelry and accessories from her home-based business in Fort Myers. Lida Livingston, owner of Livs Coffee Place, sold organic coffee. Her mobile business is based in Lakeland, but she travels for weddings, corporate events and house parties. SCOUT, from page 1A cellphone parking lot at Tampa International Airport. Politano plans to continue her efforts by talking to various advisory groups and elected officials, to draw attention to the problem. She also has been circulating a petition that people can sign on paper or electronically. One possible solution, Novotny said, would be to have a continuous turn lane down Wells Road, which would give vehicles a place to wait, so other cars could get by. “That (continuous turn lane) creates enough separation between the west and eastbound vehicles so that they’re not right on top of each other. It gives a little space for people to see what’s happening,” Novotny said. Besides working on that issue, Politano has already addressed a visual problem at the intersection of Wells and Boyette roads. There was overgrown vegetation near the intersection, making it difficult for drivers to see, she explained. She notified the county, and they responded swiftly to address the problem, she said. “It was very quick. I was very surprised, pleasantly surprised,” Politano said. The county already is planning another safety improvement, Novotny said. It is scheduled to install a traffic light at Boyette and Wells roads in 2016. Besides making conditions safer on the road, Politano has encouraged safer driver behavior. She used Wesley Chapel High School’s public address system to remind students of the importance of buckling up and not tex-
ting while driving. She used a message that got the students’ attention. She told them it would cost $140 for a ticket, if they weren’t wearing a seat belt or were caught texting while driving. Politano also did a study to see if her message had any effect. Before she made the announcement, she counted the cars in the parking lot and observed how many drivers were wearing their seat belts. By her count, it was around 15 percent. She did the same count after her announcement, and this time about 50 percent were buckled up. She said she plans to do another observation, to see if her message stuck. In another effort to raise awareness, she created a sign on a fence between the high school and elementary school. “Buckle Up!” it exclaims. Politano realizes she has ambitious goals, but noted she doesn’t have to achieve a three-lane road or modify other drivers’ behavior to qualify for the Girl Scout Gold Award. She merely has to make her best efforts and document them. She said she’s grateful for Novotny’s help on the project. “Mr. Novotny has helped immensely, immensely, immensely with this.” Politano’s mom, Felicia, recalled when her daughter told her what she planned to do for her Gold Award project. The teenager said: “I’m going to widen Wells Road.” Her mom responded: “Why don’t you find something easier than that to do.” While she doesn’t have to get the road widened, Politano does hope for that result. “The community needs it,” Politano said.

ITTs Homemade is an intergenerational venture that began as a fun project in the kitchen. They were among the original vendors at the downtown location. Grandmother Irene Secrest, 80, does some of the preparations, such as peeling the apples. But she said,“I let them do the cooking.” While her daughter,Teisha Disbrow, and

Hot bats, hot start for Saint Leo By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com
Saint Leo University’s baseball team is off to a 21-5 start. While the Lions have had strong records the last two years under coach Sean O’ Connor, his third season at the helm has produced the best results so far. They won 17 out of their first 18 games, and currently lead the nation in both hits and runs in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II play. They’re ranked 15th in the D2 Baseball News poll, and 16th in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. O’ Connor admits he is surprised by the team’s performance — he actually thought it would be better. “I’m shocked we have five losses at this point,” he said.“We haven’t played our best baseball, to be honest with you.” Still, to be 21-5 is an impressive start, and to build on consecutive 30-plus win seasons is no easy feat. O’ Connor attributes the team’s success this year to having a lot of returning players. The team’s starting lineup this year is about the same as last year, and playing underclassmen in the past is paying off now. The Lions also benefit from a focus on depth during the recruiting process. O’ Connor wanted to avoid tying their fortunes to one or two star players, where an injury or slump could derail the entire season. Instead the team has depth, with players on the bench that could start for other schools. While they might not get as much playing time as the starters, those athletes can take over when necessary without a big drop-off in talent or production. “We’ve tried to build this team so that when something does go wrong, we’re fully prepared for it and somebody else will step in and do the job that’s more than capable of doing so,” O’Connor said. That method seems to be working, with double-digit run production in more than half of their games. But even with the strong start, O’Connor warns that there’s no guarantee of post-season success just yet. They weren’t selected for the regional tournament the past two years, and with most of the conference schedule ahead of them, they have to win when it matters most to make the tournament. “The real test is the conference,” O’Connor said.“It’s nice that we’re 21-5, but if we don’t finish in the top two or three spots in the conference, it doesn’t mean a thing.” The Sunshine State Conference provides a pretty tough test for its teams. All eight schools have a winning record, and five of

much passion, O’ Connor said that Saint Leo plays with a lot of emotion. Being vocal and staying invested in the moment is part of the team’s personality, and he wants the team to remain that way. And if that passion gets them to the first regional tournament of his tenure as coach, he thinks they can keep it going from there. The talent level is so high in the Sunshine State Conference, O’ Connor thinks the teams that escape it have an advantage over teams that don’t face that level of competition on a regular basis. “If you get out of the conference, you’ve got a good shot at going to the World Series,” he said. Saint Leo is also proving that they can bounce back after losses as well. After being swept by Nova Southeastern earlier this month, they followed it up by winning four of their next five, including two of three against Florida Tech, ranked 10th at the time. While there’s still a lot of baseball left to play before the season ends in early May, O’ Connor believes he has the kind of team that can get over the hump and make a run in the regional tournament and World Series. “This is certainly the best team we’ve had in the three years I’ve been here,” he said.

or most people, Iraq is a faraway place on a glowing computer or television screen. It’s a place where we send soldiers and spouses and sisters, and pray for their safe return. It’s somewhere we forget as our work, softball practice, income taxes or other things absorb our attention, until the next news report pulls us back to images of desert and tanks. For Jwan Al Brwe, Iraq isn’t a foreign country. It’s not just a trending topic on political talk shows. It is a place she once called home. “In my country, there’s a lot of beautiful, simple stuff in life,” said Al Brwe, who now lives in Land O’ Lakes with her sister. She recalls simple pleasures she enjoyed while growing up in Duhok, a town in Northern Iraq. She recalls the warm bread, right from the oven, that her father brought them before the children left for school, and the fresh milk delivered daily to their doorstep by a farmer. She has haunting memories, too: The threats of bombing and poisonous gas. Fleeing through the mountains on a dangerous trek to Turkey to escape. Seeing people starving and dying as they awaited permission to cross the border. When they reached the border, Al Brwe recalls being rejected and forced to return to the family’s decimated town. She also recalls being jailed in Greece, after another desperate attempt to escape. Then, after years of hoping, planning and praying, she remembers finally arriving in the United States. Her memories are documented in her book, “Hope to the Last Breath: Flowers Among the Thorns in the Land Between Two Rivers,” released in December by CHB Media. Besides conveying what happened in Iraq, she wants to bring attention to what’s happening there now.
invasions, aerial assaults and chemical attacks. When politicians in the United States criticized Hussein for “using chemical weapons against his own people,” they were referring to the region where Al Brwe and her family lived. A particularly brutal attack occurred in the town of Halabja, a 90-minute drive from Al Brwe’s Duhok. When their town was rumored to be next, they knew it was time to leave. Al Brwe and her family, as well as her uncle’s family, fled to the mountains. The group of 16 was among a million people clamoring to find safety. They spent several days crossing the mountains to reach the Turkish border, where they begged for admittance. They stayed there for more than a month, suffering while awaiting an answer. “We were melting snow to stay hydrated,”Al Brwe recalled. They were forced to burn money to fuel the fire, and her father rooted around in the ground, seeking anything he could find they could eat. Thousands died, many of them children and infants, and they were buried beneath piles of dirt because there were no tools to prepare a proper grave. Al Brwe was 9. She was starving and dehydrated, and her hair began to fall out. “When you’re young, when you live that kind of life, you’re not young anymore,” she said.“You think like an adult. That’s the sad part. They steal your childhood away.” There are other painful chapters in her
story, including being rejected by Turkey and returned in trucks to Duhok, which had been attacked. Aside from their beds, little remained of their home. They stayed there for years, until they could save enough money for visas before trying to escape again. As Al Brwe’s family lived through this period in Iraq, they technically weren’t part of the conflict. Al Brwe is not a Kurd and her family is not Muslim, the dominant Kurd faith. Her family members are Chaldean Christians, affiliated with the Catholic Church. But bombs don’t differentiate between religions, so the danger was as real for them as for anyone else. “My faith was shaken,”Al Brwe said.“I’m like ‘God if you’re watching, how are you letting all these people die?’ You stop believing.” She was angry at Turkey for rejecting them, angry with the Iraqi government for persecuting them and angry with the world community for ignoring them, even though it knew what was happening, she said. “We felt abandoned,” she said.
A FAITH RESTORED Over time — through hard work, time and introspection — her faith became a source of strength again. And that renewed faith would help her through another trying time in her young life. With temporary visas in hand, her family made it into Turkey this time. They planned to escape by hiding on meat trucks, en route to Greece, but were
caught and jailed.Al Brwe was 15. But a change in the law during their incarceration allowed refugee families to stay. The family eventually reached the United States and was joined by her uncle’s family later. Even that happiness was tempered by loss. Within a year, her father, David, passed away from lung cancer. It is no coincidence, Al Brwe believes, that her father held on until his family had settled into their new country. “When you carry so much burden in your life, and you know that your children are safe, then you can let go,” she said. While “Hope to the Last Breath” tells a story of horrific suffering, Al Brwe wants it to have a positive effect on its readers. “Americans have this beautiful love that you guys give,” said Al Brwe, who became a citizen in 2005.“When you’re surrounded by kind people, it heals you. I got healed slowly. It took years.” Besides describing incidents of the past, the book serves to remind people of the new threat facing the people of Iraq. The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, is terrorizing the region, she said. “Today, everything that happened to me — it’s similar, but a different situation — is happening today, and the world is still not looking at them,” she said. While Al Brwe is free now to pursue her passions, including art and dance, she continues to pray for her own healing, for the safety of her family in Iraq and for the world to take note of her people’s suffering. She also gives thanks for being given the strength that has carried her through dark times. Al Brwe hopes that her family’s fight for survival in Iraq decades ago, and their ultimate freedom, will help to encourage others who are facing struggles and challenges. “Never stop hoping, no matter what you’re doing in life,” she said. “We can change the world by being kind. Kindness is contagious.” “Hope to the Last Breath” is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble, as well as in ebook format for Kindle. For more information, contact Al Brwe at haveni2007@yahoo.com.
LEAVING HOME Al Brwe, now 32, and her family suffered in Northern Iraq as a result of war, but it’s not the one we’ve seen play out over the past dozen years. Before that war and before Operation Desert Shield, Iraq and Iran were at war throughout most of the 1980s. Border conflicts were common and each side suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties. After that war ended, the people in Northern Iraq faced more conflict — not from Iran, but from their own government. That part of the country is dominated by Kurds (an ethnic group found in several countries in the region) and was under constant oppression by the Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein. The Kurds wanted self-rule. Hussein responded with genocide, by way of ground
Jwan Al Brwe will never forget the death that surrounded her family’s escape to the United States. But now she focuses on life, including dancing the Argentine tango and documenting it in her art.
FAQs from Pasco Animal Services The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Q. What should I do if I'm bitten by a dog? A. Wash the wound thoroughly with warm soapy water. If the dog is a pet, get the owner's name and address and ask for proof of rabies vaccination. If the dog is a stray, confine it if possible and call Animal Services. Call your doctor and follow his/her advice for treatment.Within 24 hours, report the bite to Animal Services or the Pasco County Health Department. Q. What can be done about problems with a neighbor's cat? A. If you are experiencing problems caused by owned cats, we suggest you discuss the issue with the cat owner, and request their help in resolving your problems. If these efforts fail, individuals have the option to privately litigate to resolve nuisances caused by another neighbor. If there are more than nine cats owned by one individual, that person may be in violation of Pasco County zoning regulations. To report this type of violation, contact the county’s code compliance department. Even though there are not any cat leash laws at this time, there are Florida laws and county ordinances that require cat owners to have their cats vaccinated against rabies. We will investigate reports of violations of these laws.To report a violation, you would need to call our office and provide our staff with your name and address, as well as the name and address of the cat owners. If you are a person who is feeding “stray” cats, you can be held responsible for them. As the “owner, harborer or keeper” of an animal, you are responsible for compliance
with these local and state laws and can be charged for failure to comply. If you have been feeding “stray” cats, but do not want to be held legally responsible for them, we urge you to consider finding homes for the cats, or bring them to a shelter or rescue organization. Q. How do I report nuisance coyotes? A. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission can assist with this. The phone number is (863) 648-3200. For more information, visit MyFWC.com. Q. What is a nuisance dog? Here is a listing of some of the circumstances under which a dog may be considered a nuisance: • Frequent or continued barking or howling between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. • Frequent or continued barking or howling for periods of 10 minutes or more, at any time • Repeatedly digging into, breaking, injuring or damaging shrubbery, trees, lawns, garbage, or stored materials on public or private property • Frequent or habitual depositing of excreta on property not belonging to the dog owner without the property owner's consent • Repeatedly running at large on public or private property • Repeatedly chasing vehicles or passersby while off its owner’s property • Repeatedly attacking or attempting to attack other animals while off its owner’s property For more information about pets, go to the Animal Services page of Pasco County’s website, PascoCountyFl.net.

Spring-in for First Saturday Celebration The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Hillsborough County's Pet Resource Center, the county's animal shelter, invites the community for springtime fun during the First Saturday Celebration on April 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the facility at 440 N. Falkenburg Road in Tampa. The event themed Spring-in for Pets will feature a bounce house, food, music, games, and exhibitors to help pet owners learn how to keep furry family members healthy and ready to start the new season. Volunteers at the Pet Resource Center will bathe and groom adoptable shelter pets to be "spring clean" as they leave for forever homes. Every adoption includes
spaying/neutering, vaccinations, a county license tag, microchip with free chip registration, and a special goodie bag for spring. Hillsborough County's Pet Resource Center is often the first place to receive the community's lost and surrendered animals, and the shelter hopes to be the first place adopters come to select a new pet. The facility is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., for adoptions, lost pet searches and county pet license tags. For more information on pet adoptions or First Saturday Celebrations, contact Hillsborough County's Pet Resource Center at (813) 744-5660, or visit the website at HillsboroughCounty.org/pets.

It seemed only fitting that Randy Surber, president & CEO for Florida Hospital Zephyrhills, get the first whack at the east wall in the hospital's 'M" Building. Surber was first in a line of several hospital administrators and Wellness Center guests to mark the beginning of The Creation Health Wellness Center at Florida Hospital Zephyrhills.
New wellness center will expand healthy options The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Florida Hospital Zephyrhills recently had a “demolition party” to give community leaders and residents a sneak-peek of its planned stateof-the-art Creation Health Wellness Center. The facility will be three times the size of the current wellness center and will be housed at 38233 Daughtery Road in Zephyrhills, near the hospital campus. “By creating this wellness center, we’ll become a beacon of light that can help empower our community to discover the victory in personal wellness,” Casio Jones, director of the Wellness Center, said in the release.“Without our community we wouldn’t be here and our community deserves a wellness center like this one. Wellness will
be a big part in extending the healing ministry of Christ.” The wellness center is intended to provide something for everyone, including an expanded fitness floor and equipment, personal and group training space, expanded spa with manicures, pedicures, body wraps and massage, Kid’s Zone, cooking demonstrations and more. Members will continue to enjoy the Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program, pool access for water aerobics, nutritional program and diabetes education. Membership presale for the new Wellness Center begins May 2015. The center will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. For more information, visit FHZeph.org.
George Coffin, of Zephyrhills, who belongs to the Wellness Center, takes a crack at the wall.
Casio Jones, the director of the planned Wellness Center, gets a positive reaction from the crowd as he gives the wall a shot with the sledgehammer.
Eight-year-old Tyler Story gets ready to whack the wall with a sledgehammer during the celebration marking construction of the new Wellness Center.
R.W. Morgan, of Zephyrhills, takes a look at the gaping hole in the wall as the demolition party winds down. Morgan's mother, Marilyn Morgan, is a Wellness Center member and attended the party celebrating the construction of a new Wellness Center.
