Lessons from ‘life in a bubble’
By B.C. Manion
bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
Like everyone, Dr.Timothy Bain, a chiropractor from Wesley Chapel, has had to adapt due to concerns about COVID-19. Unlike the vast majority of people,
though, Bain’s adjustments have been more extreme. As the Tampa Bay Lightning’s team chiropractor, he was in a traveling party that spent a combined 65 days at hotels in Toronto and then Edmonton through the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Stanley Cup title run.
Bain was “in the bubble” from late July through late September, while games were played without fans in attendance and measures were taken to allow teams to safely complete the NHL playoffs. See BUBBLE, page 11A

The Easter Bunny, jelly beans and huge bubbles — oh my! Event-goers to the Jelly Bean Fling at the Pioneer Florida Museum & Village, in Dade City, had the chance to visit the Easter Bunny, grab a bite to eat, make an Easter bonnet, search for eggs and take in a bubble show, among other things. Dade City boosts IT security system, in response to breach By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
The City of Dade City is taking actionable steps to strengthen IT security protocols to prevent future data breaches and hacks. Dade City Commissioners on March 9 voted unanimously to purchase cybersecurity services from Arctic Wolf Networks Inc., to provide managed risk and managed detection and response solutions, in an amount up to $41,901.88. The action follows a ransomware data security breach that occurred in November, which compromised the city’s website, email systems and online payment systems — which continues to prevent residents from paying utility bills online. In a February proposal and presentation overview from Arctic Wolf, it was revealed the city’s core systems were down for weeks and other components of the network were affected months after the breach; the attacker had access since April
2020; and, there was a $25,000 deductible for cyber insurance. The agreement with the Minnesotabased firm will provide log retention for one year, as well as 24/7 monitoring of those logs. The service also includes monthly vulnerability scanning with recommendations on remediation of detected threats, as well as the ability to allow the firm’s security team to immediately quarantine threats and suspected compromised systems. The company is described as “the market leader in security operations,” utilizing a “cloud-native security operations platform to deliver security as a concierge service.” The cybersecurity service was not budgeted in the current fiscal year, however officials felt it vital to now provide additional protection for the IT and security system. A portion of the unanticipated costs can be funded through the city’s GIS analyst vacancy and changes to some existing IT See SECURITY, page 11A
Northeast Pasco Advisory Committee established By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
The Pasco County Commission has approved the establishment of the Northeast Pasco Rural Advisory Committee. The advisory committee’s role will be to recommend nonresidential design standards to the county board for commercial development located within the boundaries of the Northeast Pasco Rural Overlay District. The northeast rural area is bordered by Bellamy Brothers Boulevard, the Green Swamp, State Road 52 and the Hernando County line. The committee will be composed of 13 voting members, representing a diverse group of stakeholders — similar to the makeup of the group that was involved in the design of the development of the See COMMITTEE, page 11A
These female Eagle Scouts are blazing a new trail By Joey Johnston Special to The Laker/Lutz News
Two years after the Boy Scouts of America opened its ranks to girls, two members of a Lutz troop have become part of the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts. Crystal Ming Torres, 16, of Carrollwood, and Sianna Eldert, 18, of New Port Richey, were among 300 girls nationwide to officially earn the distinction on Feb. 8. They are members of Troop 339G, which is chartered by the First Baptist Church of Lutz. It’s always notable when anyone earns the rank of Eagle Scout (only 6% of all Boys Scouts reach that level). This was different. This was history. “Personally, it was a goal of mine that I wanted to achieve, to prove to myself that I could achieve anything that my brother could do or my dad could do,’’ Torres said. “I’m a pioneer. That was important to me. I also wanted to be that role model for younger girls.’’ “It’s a tremendous honor to be an Eagle Scout,’’ Eldert said.“You are respected and viewed as a leader. You’re going to change the world.’’ Torres and Eldert already have changed the world — along with everyone’s perceptions. “We have celebrated everything they have done, but also reminded them of the obligation they both have going forward,’’ said Matt Cordani, scoutmaster for the Lutz boys troop and assistant for the girls troop. “As an Eagle Scout, you carry that with you the rest of your life. It isn’t,‘I was an Eagle Scout.’ It’s always,‘I am an Eagle Scout.’ “It’s really impressive how quickly

Crystal Ming Torres earned 38 merit badges and qualified as an Eagle Scout with Silver Palm. Her father, uncle and brother are all Eagle Scouts.

they’ve come in and made an impact to the program. New girls came into the troop, followed by younger girls. They can run their own organization, plan their own campouts. I think they are on par with any boys troop in the (Greater Tampa Bay Area) council (which encompasses 192 Boy Scout troops in nine counties). They are motivated to excel.’’ Torres, a junior in the International Baccalaureate program at Hillsborough High School, is the daughter of Dr. G.S.Torres and Cindy Zhang-Torres. Her father, uncle and brother are all Eagle Scouts.Torres earned 38 merit badges and qualified as an Eagle
Scout with Silver Palm. She’s a member of Hillsborough High’s varsity cheerleading and varsity tennis squads. She’s planning a career in medicine and has her sights set on attending the University of Florida. Eldert, who graduated last summer from Florida Virtual School, is seeking a bachelor’s degree in Media Communications from Full Sail University. She’s the daughter of Tanya and Michael Eldert. Her father and uncle are Eagle Scouts. Eldert, who earned 23 merit badges, plans to own a marketing and graphic design business. As part of the Eagle Scout requirements,
both Torres and Eldert had to earn at least 21 merit badges, take on leadership roles within their troop and community, and complete a community service project. Torres, working in conjunction with Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife, built six nest boxes for screech owls and a carrying case for transporting injured birds. Eldert’s project concerned raising awareness of Dysautonomia, a rare condition in which the autonomic nervous system (ANS) does not work properly. It may affect the functioning of the heart, bladder, intestines, sweat glands, pupils and blood vessels. Eldert, who was diagnosed with Dysautonomia, visited pediatricians and family care physicians, and presented them with gift baskets that contained information pamphlets and a book about the condition. “It’s so misdiagnosed and hardly anyone knows about it,’’ Eldert said.“My project was really personal for me. I wanted this condition to receive more attention.’’ Both Eldert and Torres are now familiar with raising awareness for a cause. They said they have enjoyed receiving local media attention after their notable accomplishment. “I was on three different news stations and featured in the local newspapers,’’ Eldert said.“One of the camera guys told me,‘We need to get you an agent.’ The attention opened my eyes and let me know that this was kind of a big deal. I loved the attention and it gave me an opportunity to talk about my journey.’’ “I’ve had all sorts of interviewers — female and male — the main reaction we’re getting is we have done something amazing,’’ Torres said. “I think I’m starting to understand the impact. It makes me realize what we’re doing is important.’’
Girls-only troops work on camping, leadership skills The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Girls had a chance to learn outdoor skills, build teamwork and develop leadership at the Back to Brownsea program in Odessa. The program is for members of the girlsonly troops of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), according to a news release. Seventeen-year-old Isabella Trevino, a Gaither High student, was at the camp — held March 12 through March 14 — because she wanted to give something back, by helping the younger girls who were there, the release says. The younger girls had just “crossed over”
to the Scouts BSA program, for ages 11 to 17, from family oriented Cub Scouts packs, which includes elementary school-aged boys and girls. Trevino served as the senior patrol leader (the highest level of youth leadership) for the weekend event, which drew more than 50 participants, including girls as instructors and students and adult leaders, to Boy Scout Camp Brorein, 16901 Boy Scout Road, the release adds. “People involved in this grow into real good adults,” Trevino said, in the release. “And, we learn a lot about leadership and skills.” The event was sponsored by the Fort

Brooke District of the Greater Tampa Bay Council of Boy Scouts of America, which serves nine west-central Florida counties. It was organized by Terri Hunter, a member of the district’s Activities and Civic Services Committee. The hands-on activities, taught by older Scouts BSA members, included fire-building, wood-splitting, knot-tying and other basic scout skills exercises to prepare them for independent camping, using the patrol method. Paisley Murphy, 13, a Pasco Middle School student, with Troop 34, of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Land O’ Lakes, helped the younger girls work on tying knots. She said she enjoyed teaching the skill, according to the release. Her father, Ryan Murphy, an adult leader with the troop, said, “This was a good opportunity to get more experience in leadership roles.”

Wesley Chapel native relishes second shot at ‘American Idol’ By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
Wesley Chapel native Zach D’Onofrio made his first brief appearance on ABC’s hit reality television show “American Idol” back in 2018. Then he was a timid 17-year-old Wiregrass Ranch High School student who perhaps came away best known for his colorful sock collection, before being eliminated during the show’s “Hollywood Week” competition in Los Angeles. D’Onofrio’s second chance at stardom proved more fruitful. Entering as a more seasoned and confident 20-year-old college sophomore studying at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, D’Onofrio aimed to advance farther in the competition and to have a more enjoyable experience overall. Mission accomplished for D’Onofrio. He made it to the second round of “Hollywood Week” thanks to his rendition of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind,” as part of the show’s genre challenge. He also had previously impressed celebrity judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie — in a live audition broadcast March 14 singing “Golden Slumbers” by The Beatles solo, and “Falling” by Harry Styles with girlfriend and former “Idol” contestant Catie Turner. However, D’Onofrio’s run ended in the show’s duets challenge on March 22, where showrunners paired him with Sloane Simon, a 16-year-old high school cheerleader from the Pittsburgh area. Together, they belted out a cover of “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates. Following the aired performance, Perry said of D’Onofrio:“Listen, I believe in you. You really have grown and overcome.” In the same breath, however, the Grammy-nominated pop star said both D’Onofrio and his duet partner “need more experience” and “it’s not the time” for them to continue in the competition. But, she later added this of D’Onofrio on the broadcast: “Next time he comes back,

he’s going to show us — the underdog always wins, always.” Despite a rejection witnessed by millions of viewers nationwide, D’Onofrio came away pleased to have achieved more compared to his first go-round, thanks in part to countless choir and voice lessons taken the past couple years. He also left with several friendships forged with other talented contestants throughout his appearance on the show. He traded in his unique socks for showy, colorful sweaters, too. “My whole thing the second time was getting out of my shell, and I really did think I got out of my shell,” D’Onofrio told The Laker/Lutz News in a recent phone interview. “I definitely felt better the second time. I just didn’t want to get cut earlier than I did the first time. I just wanted to make it farther, that was my main goal, and I did.” D’Onofrio acknowledged that he felt more comfortable this time performing in
front of the daunting star-studded cast of judges — who are among the world’s alltime best-selling artists in their respective genres. After all, it wasn’t the first time he performed for them. “I definitely was more confident, because I was like, ‘Yeah, they know me, I’ve done this before,’ like it really wasn’t that bad,” said D’Onofrio, who grew up in the Seven Oaks neighborhood in Wesley Chapel. “I just saw (the judges) as people this time, instead of figures, because they really do give advice, and talk to you heart-to-heart and it feels real, because some things on TV are sometimes fake, obviously, but when you’re actually there in person and you can connect person to person, it just feels really nice.” D’Onofrio began singing around his junior year of high school, making his talent known at Dreamhouse Theatre in Lutz, which was then owned by his family. The budding singer-songwriter adeptly plays the piano, electric guitar and ukulele, and fancies himself an old soul at heart — with a passion for oldies and classics music dating to the 1940s era. “It just feels right when I sing those types of songs,” said D’Onofrio, who lists Billy Joel among his favorites. “That was kind of my goal with “American Idol,” to introduce the new generation of people that maybe aren’t familiar with that type of music…so it’s like taking older songs and just making them fun and new and that’s kind of my goal, just so people don’t dislike oldies.”
NEWFOUND CELEBRITY While D’Onofrio said no music labels have reached out to him since his latest “Idol” appearance, he’s received offers to perform at some local piano and jazz bars in Tampa Bay. His college also has been quite supportive of his career, hosting an “Idol” watch party and has “offered a lot of really cool opportunities,” such as on-campus performances. He’s also acquired a certain level of fame — from getting verified on Instagram to
having fans reach out to him on social media from Argentina, Brazil and Philippines, and other places. Even former “Idol” contestant Clark Beckham, who finished runner-up on the show in 2015, reached out to him for words of encouragement. Every once in a while, D’Onofrio is even recognized on campus, or about town. But, people tend to be timid about approaching him. “At school, I get so many stares,” he said, noting he realizes it’s because of his American Idol appearances. He doesn’t say anything, because he thinks that would make them feel awkward. “People want to say something but they never do, and I’m like,‘I’m not scary, I swear, it’ll be OK.’”
MUSIC IS THE MOTIVATION D’Onofrio continues to make music from his college dorm room — which he’s transformed into a makeshift studio. He also collaborates on projects with a friend through FaceTime calls. He plans to release a single titled,“Don’t Leave,” in late April, which he describes as “a pop piano ballad.” He’s also working to produce and release an EP album by summertime. Now the lingering question: Could the third time be the charm for D’Onofrio, on “American Idol” or another reality television singing competition? At the moment, D’Onofrio is focused on finding success as an independent artist and pursuing a degree in music management. But he hasn’t closed the door on music competitions. “I’m sure I’ll audition again just to see,” he said. But he doesn’t know if that will be to “American Idol” or “America’s Got Talent” or “The Voice.” If he makes a return to “Idol,” he’d like to make it to at least round three. While he’s exited the show this year, 19year-old Alanis Sophia, of Dade City, remains active in the competition.

Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School in Spring Hill is one of approximately 2,000 schools worldwide to implement the AP Capstone Diploma program, according to a school release. The innovative program allows students to develop the skills that matter most for college success, such as research, collaboration and communication. The program consists of two yearlong courses taken in sequence: AP Seminar and AP Research. Students who score a 3 or higher in both courses, and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing, earn the AP Capstone Diploma. Students who score a 3 or higher in both classes, but not on the additional four exams, can earn the AP Seminar and Research Certificate. Bishop McLaughlin will start offering AP Seminar in the fall. In this class, students choose and evaluate complex topics through multiple lenses — identify credibility and bias in sources, and develop arguments in support of a recommendation. In the subsequent AP Research course, students design, execute, present and defend a yearlong research-based investigation on a topic of individual interest. For information, visit BMCHS.com.

Strong Women and Their Accomplishments Are Worth Celebrating Owned By A Woman, Cornerstone Pros Is Your Best Choice
M
arch is National Women’s History Month. As a female-owned business, this celebration hits home for customers and employees of Cornerstone Pros in Land O’ Lakes. From the minute Cornerstone was launched 15 years ago, Cornerstone’s owner, Dana Spears, did whatever it took to bring dependable HVAC service to the Tampa Bay area. But, it wasn’t always an easy task. As a mom who also juggled a parttime job, she had to overcome obstacles and break through barriers to build her company from the ground up to become the successful business she has today. Dana’s story represents what National Women’s History Month is truly all about. Of course, being a female-owned business isn’t the only thing special about Cornerstone. The company sets the bar high when it
before or know someone who has. This means, rather than hiring a stranger, you’re hiring a familiar face and a company with a proven reputation for dependability. 3. Quality service and fair prices: Cornerstone also makes service affordable and easier on your budget. Affordability never comes at the expense of quality. From exclusive coupons and discounts, to flexible financing options, it delivers dependable, high-quality craftsmanship that is affordable and easy to pay for, over time.
comes to home care and comfort, and always gives customers the specialized service they need. Here’s more about what makes Cornerstone Pros different than others.
HOME SERVICE EXPERTS
In need of an HVAC tech, electrician or plumber? Cornerstone offers the full spectrum of home services to turn your home into a true safe haven. Why does this matter to you? Because hiring a home service provider that has multiple services leads to three major benefits. 1. Convenience: Hiring Cornerstone Pros eliminates the stress and hassle of dealing with multiple companies to address your home service needs. Rather than having to juggle scheduling appointments with different contractors, you’ll enjoy the convenience of working with one company. 2. A friendly face: Serving the Tampa Bay community for over a decade, you may have either hired us
LICENSED, CERTIFIED AND AFFORDABLE
The only way to protect your budget and secure your family’s safety is by hiring a professional company that is certified to handle your HVAC, plumbing and electrical problems. Cornerstone does the screening and training for you, ensuring that every technician who enters your home is licensed and cer-
tified in HVAC, plumbing or electrical before they are added to the team. With Cornerstone, you can take comfort in knowing you’ve hired the most qualified person for the job. And, when it comes to pricing, Cornerstone does things a little differently. Rather than charging by the hour, it charges by the job. This means your initial quote is your final cost—no exceptions. This firm-pricing plan allows its technicians to ignore the clock and focus on delivering the quality work you deserve. Cornerstone even offers a maintenance plan starting at $9.95 that covers routine maintenance for your AC, plumbing and electrical items, as well as discounts on repairs and service visits. Above all else, the best part about Cornerstone is that its team cares about your home comfort, budget and safety. Whether you’re in need of emergency plumbing or A/C repair, or you’re considering a tankless hot water heater, call 813-949-4445.

Absolutely Avalon Celebrates Spring with FREE Family Fun Activities Don’t Miss An Amazing Laser Light Show at 8!
O
f the many things that sets Avalon Park Wesley Chapel apart from other planned developments is its long history of organizing special events for area residents to enjoy. In just a few weeks, the community is hosting Absolutely Avalon on Saturday, April 17 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This fun, safe event has family friendly activities, including local musicians, a rock climbing wall, stilt walkers, inflatable obstacle course and bumper boats, and a laser light show beginning at dusk. Parking is on River Glen Boulevard within the Avalon Park community. No preregistration is needed. For art lovers, the Pasco Fine Arts Council continues its art exhibit featuring watercolor artist Peter Watrous through April 23, inside the Welcome Center at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel. A reception was held last week to meet the artist and showcase his works. Several of Watrous’ works that are still on display can be viewed at PascoArts.org/peter-watrous-gallery, along with the prices. The Watrous exhibit is one of many shows hosted by Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, in conjunction with the Pasco Fine Arts Council. This arts partnership began in 2019, with Avalon Park Wesley Chapel offering its Welcome Center as a new gallery for residents on the east side of Pasco County. The Avalon Park Group also is planning to build a permanent Arts Center in its new downtown.
WHY FAMILIES CHOOSE AVALON PARK
In addition to its many community events and art shows, families choose to live in Avalon Park Wesley Chapel because it offers so much more than just another subdivision with homes and amenities. “We are not just developers— we are building a brand new town,” said

Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of marketing for the Avalon Park Group. “We’re bringing together everything a family needs to enjoy life today and in the future.” Avalon Park Wesley Chapel has been welcoming families since 2012, when this community on State Road 54, about three miles east of Interstate 75, began building its first homes. Today, 1,000 homes have been completed or are underway, and residents enjoy unique amenities, neighborhood schools, and a convenient location with easy access to Tampa, Lakeland and Orlando. Homebuyers can choose from several models from Avex Homes, and will soon have more floor plans available from DR Horton. Singlefamily and townhomes are currently for sale, and apartments and senior housing are planned for future phases. Homes range in price from the mid $200s to over $400s. “Our builders offer homes for everyone, from teachers to physicians to empty-nesters wanting the convenience of the no-fuss, townhome lifestyle,” said Lerret.
NEW K-6 CHARTER SCHOOL
Few planned communities can

boast of a tuition-free charter school at their main entrance. But, this bragging right goes to Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, which is proud to welcome Pinecrest Academy Wesley Chapel. The school opened its doors this fall to more than 600 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Students are immersed in new technologies, including robotics, and work in fully functioning STEM labs — something most schools do not offer. The school will be adding seventh and eighth grades in coming years.
DOWNTOWN AVALON PARK
Avalon Park Wesley Chapel will offer places to shop and work in its downtown hub that will be connected to its residential neighborhoods by tree-lined streets, walkways and bike paths. “We are building a traditional downtown, with stores located inside of our community on the boulevard road leading to our residences, parks and schools,” said Lerret. The first phase of downtown Avalon Park Wesley Chapel will include 130,000 square feet of
mixed-use commercial space and apartments built above the storefronts. “We’re building beautiful, multistory buildings with commercial space designed for businesses our residents want close to home — restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, bars and entertainment, hair and nail salons, as well as activities like dance, gymnastic and karate studios,” said Lerret. Construction on the first phase is expected to begin later this year, at the same time that the expansion of State Road 54 is completed. Eventually, Avalon Park’s downtown will have more than 560,000 square feet of retail, and 120,000 square feet of office space. At build out, this 1,650-acre master-planned community will have about 4,400 single and multi-family homes, and be home to 10,000 residents. For more information about Avalon Park, call 813-783-1515, or email info@AvalonParkWesleyChapel.com. Information is also available at AvalonParkWesleyChapel.com, and its Facebook page at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel.

Affordable Living At Club Wildwood
O
lder adults in central and east Pasco County are discovering the charming manufactured home community of Club Wildwood in Hudson, which boasts affordable homes, first-class amenities and a five-minute drive to the beach. Club Wildwood is the largest retirement community in north Pasco County, with close to 500 homes. Living in a large community means there is always someone to share things with, including swimming in the resort-style heated pool, taking your pup to the friendly dog park, enjoying crafts and potluck dinners at the clubhouse, and even fishing in a well-stocked lake. Residents are friendly, and welcome newcomers to the community’s many clubs and activities. Currently, three resale homes are available in Club Wildwood, very affordably priced from $20,000 to $32,000. Most resale homes in the community have been updated with the latest designs and flooring, and are a tremendous value for a single-family home in terms of cost, amenities and location. For folks moving from Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and Wesley Chapel, living at Club Wildwood costs less than renting an apartment. The community’s monthly lot rental fee is less than $700, and includes city water, trash, sewer, landscaping and full use of all recreation facilities. Club Wildwood’s location on U.S. 19 gives residents quick access to major roadways, shopping and din-
ing, and area attractions. In addition to its Olympic-size heated pool, amenities include a picnic area, shuffleboard courts, a bocce ball court and horseshoe pits. A spacious clubhouse has recently been remodeled, and boasts a fully equipped kitchen and large meeting room, small library, pool tables, fitness room and card tables. Regular activities include bingo, karaoke, potluck dinners, coffee hours, dart tournaments, happy hours, pancake breakfasts, line dancing and bridge games. During the social distancing requirements of COVID-19, some of these activities have been suspended, but all will be back when it is safe to gather together again. Outside of the park, many Club Wildwood residents participate in special interest clubs, including bowling and golf leagues, the Red Hat Society, and volunteering at nearby Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point. The 290-bed hospital, which is less than 10 minutes from Club Wildwood, is the only Level II Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center in Pasco County, and its renowned Heart Institute provides comprehensive cardiac care and an open-heart surgery program. Make Club Wildwood your next home by contacting Community Manager Sean Terris for a private tour at 866-799-6706 or sterris@suncommunities.com.

lastic contributes to climate change and is a major pollutant, harming wildlife and people. With Earth Day around the corner, here are a few tips for reducing your plastic footprint at home that will also contribute to a healthier planet. Start a Garden: From cartons of berries and tomatoes to individually wrapped cucumbers, it can be difficult to avoid plastic in the produce aisle of your supermarket. By growing your favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs at home, you may avoid some of this waste and reduce your carbon footprint at the same time, as foods found in the store are often shipped from distant places. Green Your Hydration: Bottled water contains microplastics and is a significant part of the global plastic waste problem. To stay hydrated healthfully and sustainably, use a water filter pitcher. Rethink Garbage Collection: Plastic garbage bags may seem neces-
sary, but there are reusable alternatives available that can help to drastically reduce your plastic waste. These durable, washable, water-resistant garbage can liners are 100% made from post-consumer recycled plastics. By doing your part to find sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic, you can reduce your contribution to a global environmental crisis right at home. – Courtesy of StatePoint

It’s 24/7 protection. It doesn’t matter if its midnight on Christmas.” Towne said the price for the service is reasonable because a comparative package from other cybersecurity companies could have cost upwards of $94,000. “I don’t think anybody offers a package like them,” Towne said of Arctic Wolf. “They’re providing above and beyond.” Commissioners recognized the need for enhanced cybersecurity. “We realized we’ve got to do something,” Commissioner Scott Black said.“We can’t afford to let things like that continue to happen to us.” Mayor Camille Hernandez agreed that the additional security is the way to go. She also noted: “The price tag, even though it looks high, is a great deal. “If this is going to get us on the path the progress that we need to see and the utility bill pay and other things, it certainly seems like the right thing to do,” she said.

The board approved a resolution, which became effective immediately, relating to the creation of the advisory committee that says the committee will help in the development of commercial regulations in the rural overlay district. The committee will have a limited purpose and duration, and will automatically be disbanded, once its recommendation is made to the county board. The advisory committee will be made up of five property owners who are residents of the Northeast Pasco County Rural Area; five business owners in the Northeast Pasco County Rural Area; one land use; and, two at-large members. Advisory committee members will not be compensated, and can be removed by a majority of the county board, with or without cause. The advisory committee will elect a chairperson to preside at all meetings and/or workshops, and a vice chairman can be elected to preside and act on behalf of the chairperson. A majority of advisory committee members must be present to constitute a quorum. Notice of regular or special meetings/workshops of the NERAC and the time and location of each meeting shall be published to the public on the main Pasco County website, and the meetings will be subject to provisions of Florida’ open meeting laws.

The chief executive officer of B3 Medical shared some of the lessons he learned from the experience, and other insights he’s gleaned along life’s way, during a Zoom business breakfast meeting on March 2, with members of the North Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. One lesson Bain shared involves the importance of learning from failure. “You’re going to fail. Everybody fails. Everybody fails a lot. You’re going to fail more often as a business leader and a business owner, I think than the average person — because we’re willing to fail. “We look at, ‘How am I going to succeed?’And, the answer is,‘You’re going to fail — a lot of times,” he said. In the season the year before claiming the Stanley Cup, the Lightning failed. “We failed. Really miserably. In front of everybody,” the team’s chiropractor said. “We won the President’s Trophy, which meant we had the best record in hockey. In fact, we had a historic season, then we went to Columbus and we just got swept right out of the playoffs. “Nobody could believe it.We couldn’t believe it. I’m sure none of the fans could believe it. “It was embarrassing. “But we learned. “Some of the things that we learned were: Maybe we brought guys back too quickly. Maybe we didn’t bring them back fast enough. Some of our rehab didn’t work as well as we thought it was going to. Maybe we needed some different characters in the room. “Maybe we needed some different character,” he said. Failure can be a valuable teacher:The important thing is to fail forward, Bain said. “Every time you fail, make sure you’re moving forward. You learn something from it, and you move forward to your ultimate goal,” he said. “With the Lightning, I think, the obvious ultimate goal is a big, shiny Stanley Cup — which is the most revered trophy in sports,” he said.
LUMPS AND BUMPS, ALONG THE WAY
The story of the Stanley Cup championship season didn’t start off well. “The beginning of the season, was truthfully ugly for us,” Bain said. But the team picked up Pat Maroon, who was a catalyst in breaking up team cliques, he said. “Sometimes, it just really takes one person to get those cliques to start to work together, so you can start to move forward,” Bain said. The team made some deals at the end of the season, to bring more grit to its game. It had to go into the playoffs with a different attitude, and style, and that was a hard adjustment for some players, he said. “Guys wanted to play the old-style of Lightning hockey, which is fast, furious, move it around, score tons of goals. And, in the playoffs, really you can’t do that,” Bain said. He said he knew the team had reached a turning point when it won a game that had five overtimes. One moment, in particular, stood out to him. “I remember at the end of the fourth overtime, the guys came in, I’m thinking: ‘These guys are going to be exhausted.’The first thing I see, is somebody said,‘This is fun, isn’t it? I can’t wait. I hope we have another one of these things.’ “That was cool. Right then and there, I

knew we were going to win that game,” Bain said, because of the players’ mindset. “Our identity now was:‘We’re not going to lose this thing. We’ve got this.’,” Bain added. In today’s business climate, COVID-19 brings a lot of fear and anxiety. The Lightning overcame challenges. “We dealt with adversity upon adversity. Guys getting hurt.We lost our captain. “It didn’t matter what the obstacle was. We had a notion that failure was not an option this year,” Bain said. “We created a plan.We worked the plan. We trusted the plan,” he said. “We had to adapt. We adapted better than other teams.” “Every business creates a plan at the beginning of year.‘OK, I’m going to execute on the strategy,’” he said. But, it’s important to periodically check back on that plan:What worked? What didn’t work? What needs to change? During COVID, employers and employees have faced a multitude of changes. Some employees work at home. Some are dealing with child care issues. Some are sick, or have family members who are sick. Some have lost loved ones to COVID. Employers need to keep a pulse on what’s happening with their staff, he said. “So, there’s got to be an element that we bring into our businesses, of empathy and trust. And, we’ve got to make sure that we’re there for our employees and our team members, because they’re going through stuff as much if not worse than we are. They’re fearful for their jobs, they’re fearful for their life, they’re fearful for their families,” he added. It’s important to stay focused on the company’s ultimate goal, and for staff to have buy-in. “In a company, everybody is a cog in the wheel, and without each piece, you can’t really get anywhere,” Bain said.“If you’re having one person who is inside your team, who doesn’t know their role, or doesn’t understand their role, inside of the bigger picture — or doesn’t understand the big picture — it can really derail what you’re trying to do,” Bain said. With the Lightning,“the mission was really obvious,” Bain said. They had to make it to the last game of the season, or they had failed. “It was about putting the right team of people, on the ice. It was about putting the right team of people behind the people on the ice,” Bain said. The same is true for companies that are in pursuit of a goal. The shiny object may vary, but he said: “We all want to win our Stanley Cup.”

PHSC launches new women’s soccer program By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
I
n a time where countless other colleges and universities nationwide have dropped athletics programs amid COVID-19-associated budget cuts and other reasons, PascoHernando State College (PHSC) is making plays to boost its sports offerings. The institution added women’s soccer to its athletics roster beginning with the 2021 fall season in August. Home games will be played on the outdoor fields of the Wiregrass Sports Campus of Pasco County, 3021 Sports Coast Way, in Wesley Chapel. The school’s athletics department made the announcement official in a March 19 press release. The PHSC women’s soccer program will be a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA). It joins PHSC’s other intercollegiate athletics programs, known as the Bobcats, that include women’s volleyball, cross- country and softball, and men’s basketball and baseball. Women’s soccer marks the local college’s first new sport since 2005 — when it brought on women’s cross-country, under head coach Jackie Wachtel. Leading the upstart team is former Tampa Bay Rowdies head coach Stuart Campbell, a familiar face and widely known figure in the soccer ranks. He’s also a longtime Wesley Chapel resident. The English-born Campbell played professional soccer from 1996 to 2013, before serving as the assistant coach for the Rowdies from 2014 to 2015 and head coach from 2015 to 2018. As a midfielder, Campbell played for several teams in England, including Leicester City of the Premier League, the top division of England’s football league system. He finished his playing career with the Rowdies in 2012-2013. He also was a member of the Scotland U21 national team in 1998-1999. The decision to launch women’s soccer made sense for myriad reasons, including boosting enrollment, PHSC athletics director Steve Winterling explained to The Laker/Lutz News, in a recent interview. The undertaking, which was three-plus years in the making, came with the blessing of PHSC senior vice president Dr. Bob Bade, who Winterling noted has a “very athletic-inclined” outlook. Aside from being another avenue “to promote our college even more,” Winterling said, women’s soccer also provides more athletic participation opportunities for PHSC’s overwhelming female population,

which represents about 61% of the student body. Moreover, Winterling highlighted the popularity and surplus of high-level girls youth and high school soccer throughout Pasco County and the Tampa Bay region, plus the opportunity to house the program on the county’s east side in Wesley Chapel. (All of PHSC’s other sports programs are based on the West Campus in New Port Richey.) “We’re hoping to keep young women in our area that want to continue playing soccer because there’s not a whole lot of opportunities for them,” the athletics director said. “There’s a lot of talent out there and I think this is going to be exciting to keep some people close to home, where they can play a couple more years and maybe go on and play at a four-year (school), and that’s always the plan of our program here.” Having a recognizable name in Campbell to lead the way seems to be another bonus to generate buzz for the program and school from the onset. “Everybody knows the Rowdies,” Winterling said,“so if that doesn’t get you excited about soccer and somebody wanting to come and play at our college, I don’t know what would.” Remaining logistical tasks for the program, the athletics director said, include
finalizing a first-year budget, schedule, and equipment and uniform needs, as well as familiarizing Campbell with NJCAA rules, regulations and compliance protocols. The team will offer 11 tuition-and-books scholarships to start, with another dozen or so walk-on players. Campbell will host a tryout for interested athletes on April 11 at 5 p.m., at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus. As for style of play, players and fans can expect lots of action and high-scoring affairs, under Campbell’s tutelage. The coach quipped, “I’d rather win a game 4-3 than 1-0, because, at the end of the day, the product you put out on the soccer field, you’re there to entertain, and if you give the players that freedom, that license to go express themselves, I think they’ll be really, really productive.” He added: “I want to excite the players and excite the fans to come to watch. We like to play a possession-based game that makes it exciting for the fans. In my previous role as a head coach (with the Rowdies), we always scored lots of goals.”
A PLACE TO PLAY, DEVELOP
PHSC’s women’s soccer program — like the school’s other sports — creates another pathway for athletes who want to play college ball, but might need more seasoning and maturity before advancing to the NCAA
Division I or Division II ranks, such as the University of South Florida, University of Tampa or Saint Leo University, to name a few. Campbell cited “alarming” dropout and transfer rates among college soccer players in their freshman and sophomore years at larger four-year schools for various reasons, such as unhappiness with lack of playing time and homesickness. Campbell explained,“They leave home at a relatively young age. They leave for college at 18 (years old), they’re in a different environment for the first time, they’re not playing and it’s a relatively short (soccer) season…so if we can give them that platform for them to grow and develop, and then if they can go onto another school, we’ve done our job, not just sending them off as soccer players, but more rounded young women.” Winterling himself started the PHSC baseball program back in 1991 and also coached at Florida College and Florida State University. He likewise emphasized the impact of junior college athletics serving as a launch pad for underclassmen athletes to seamlessly advance to more prominent four-year programs. The junior college level, he said, helps younger student-athletes who may otherwise “get lost” by larger classroom sizes and increased demands of a Division I or Division II program. “I have not heard or talked to a studentathlete that has ever regretted going two years at the state college here and moving on,” he said. “We want our student-athletes to get their AA (Associate of Arts) degree, enjoy two years of sports, if that’s what they so choose, and then if they want to continue and go on, we work hard to find them another place to play to finish out their bachelor’s degree.” Women’s soccer might not be the only new sport coming to PHSC, meanwhile. Part of the athletic department’s future plans include adding men’s cross-country and men’s soccer in coming years,Winterling said.“We want to add more sports down the road.”
Conference champs The Saint Leo University men’s basketball claimed its first-ever Sunshine State Conference (SSC) championship tournament title, defeating Florida Southern University 83-70 on March 21 at the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Lions (7-1) were paced by senior guard Rusty Moorer, who registered a game-high 28 points. The team is coached by Lance Randall.

He can sometimes get a little too excited over treats, but he is eager to learn. Mufasa isn't fond of sharing his food or toys, and he needs a home without other animals or children. If you're a homebody who enjoys peace and quiet, Mufasa may be the loyal companion you need. Exercise, mental stimulation and training all would be beneficial for helping him settle down as a pet.

Shelly is a low-key kitty Shelly is calm, quiet and enjoys climbing up on a perch to watch over everything, or just sleeping in her bed. She really doesn't require a lot of attention but does love to be brushed. She will press her face to the brush, and make little contented chirps and warbles. Shelly would likely do best in a home without children where she could just relax. If you think you're the right match, make an appointment to meet her.
If you would like to adopt Mufasa or Shelly, be sure to visit Pasco County Animal Services at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’ Lakes. The turtles are experiencing a variety of medical issues from cold-stunning, which occurs when cold-blooded animals are exposed to unusually cold water and/or air temperatures for an extended period of time. Three of the turtles are in critical condition, and despite life-saving measures, another turtle from this group succumbed to complications of its condition. “It’s a labor of love for us here at the Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center,” said Ashley Riese, manager, Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center, in a news release. “We will take whatever measures necessary to rehabilitate these animals to see them released,” said Riese.

ASAP Pressure Cleaning Experienced, licensed and insured Special to The Laker / Lutz News Spring cleaning is upon us, and nothing improves the appearance of your home more remarkably and more quickly than pressure washing its exterior walls, decks, screens, fence, driveway and roof. Hiring an experienced pressure cleaning company that is licensed and insured is important when inviting someone to work on your home. And that’s why many homeowners call on ASAP Pressure Cleaning. The company has been in business since 2012, and serves customers in primarily Pasco and Hernando counties, working with both homeowners and commercial customers. “We offer a variety of services, for a variety of surfaces, from soft wash to high pressure,” said owner Austin Batchelder. “Your property is your little slice of paradise, and we strive to keep it looking clean and bright.” ASAP’s exterior cleaning services includes: • Gutter cleanouts and downspouts • Screen enclosures • Exterior paint prep • Fences - vinyl, wood and metal • Brick/block walls • Pavers • Pool decks • Lanais and patios • Wood and painted decks • Stamped concrete It also is an expert at cleaning roofs, including shingle (soft wash), tile, membrane and metal roofs. Batchelder says what sets his company apart from other pressure-washing operations, besides
being licensed and insured, is the level of expertise his team offers, and the equipment he owns. “Our truck-mounted commercial grade pressure and soft-wash equipment are commercial machines, not just basic units out of your local hardware store,” explains Batchelder. “We also have the ability to bring water to jobs, and can heat the water up to 200-degrees for jobs that require very hot water. And, we have both day and night crews, to give us the ability and flexibility to accommodate when the customer needs their job done.” Batchelder defines pressure-washing as the use of high-pressure water that is sprayed from a nozzle to remove dirt, grime, dust, mold, pollen and other unwanted contaminants from hard surfaces, such as driveways, wood decks, pool decks, sidewalks and other outdoor areas. Because of Florida’s high humidity, he recommends pressure cleaning your home twice a year to prevent mold and mildew buildup on walkways, decks, driveways and siding. “How often you need pressure-washing services depends on the environment you live in, and because of all the lakes and wetlands in Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and Wesley Chapel, spring and fall is always recommended because of the area’s high humidity,” said Batchelder. Batchelder is proud of being recognized on Angie’s List with a Super Service Award for the past five years because of its excellent customer service. As his company grows, he looks forward to adding more trucks to his fleet and providing quality jobs to his employees and continued good service to his customers. A native of Brooksville, he is married and has two young children.

Easter services are evolving, amidst pandemic By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com
There was so much uncertainty last year about COVID-19 that many churches changed up their Easter celebrations, to reduce potential spread of the disease. A year later, many churches across the region continue to use a variety of approaches in celebrating Christianity’s most significant holy day. Last year, for instance, Idlewild Baptist Church, at 18333 Exciting Idlewild Blvd., in Lutz, relied on online services to celebrate Easter. This year, it will be holding a number of in-person services. The First United Methodist Church of Land O’ Lakes, at 6209 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., livestreamed its Easter service last year. This year, it will have an in-person service. Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, at 2348 Collier Parkway, in Land O’ Lakes, created a more personal touch for its
online services last year, by attaching photographs of parishioners on chairs — so officiants could look at them, while saying Mass. This year, the church will have in-person services — while limiting the size of the crowds. Last year, Myrtle Lake Baptist Church, 2018 Riegler Road, in Land O’ Lakes had a drive-in Easter service and it will do that again this year, on April 4 at 10:30 a.m. Meanwhile, Grace Community Church, at 7107 Boyette Road in Wesley Chapel, will switch from the drive-in service it had last year to an in-person worship service on April 4 at 10:30 a.m.After the service, families will be able to take advantage of a photo booth, to pose for their Easter pictures. Last year, families shot selfies in their cars. AdventHealth Zephyrhills will have its 36th annual Easter Sunrise Service at 7 a.m., on April 4, virtually, via Facebook.com/ad-
venthealthzephyrhills. The event was held virtually last year, too, after decades of conducting the service on the hospital’s lawn. Meanwhile, across the Catholic Diocese of St. Petersburg, Bishop Gregory Parkes has kept protocols in place for the nearly 500,000 Catholics in Tampa Bay Area, according to a Diocesan news release. Those protective measures include social distancing, sanitizing and the use of face coverings. Church holy water fonts remain empty and collection baskets are not circulated, the news release says. Bishop Parkes also has kept in place the general dispensation from Sunday Mass at this time. If you’re interested in attending an Easter service, be sure to check your local church to get the latest details on services. Many places of worship require reservations, so be sure to check soon to reserve your spot.
FILE
All sorts of celebrations are planned around The Laker/Lutz News’ coverage area. Check with your local church’s website to find out specifics on services.

The Florida Department of Health is partnering with Count the Kids, an evidenced-based stillbirth prevention public health campaign, to educate and empower pregnant women about the importance of tracking fetal movement in the third trimester of pregnancy. One out of every 147 pregnancies in Florida ends in stillbirth, according to Florida vital statistics, in a news release. The campaign was launched in April 2020, near the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research shows the benefits of expectant moms tracking their baby’s movements daily and learning how long it normally takes the baby to get to 10 movements. After a few days, moms will begin to see a pattern. If the baby’s “normal” changes during the third trimester, it could be a sign of potential problems and an indication that the expectant mom should call her health care provider. Maternal health providers, birthing hospitals, social services agencies, childbirth educators and other providers in Florida can order free Count the Kicks educational material, at CountTheKicks.org, to help them have the kick-counting conversation with expectant parents. Since the launch of the campaign last year, more than 313,000 educational pieces have been distributed throughout the state. Count the Kicks also has a free app available in the iOS and Google Play app stores, and is available in 12 languages. It also features a kick-counting history, daily reminders, and the ability to count for a single baby and twins.

The classes will take place at the Musunuru Senior Center, 12417 Clock Tower Parkway in Hudson. The eight, two-hour sessions use group discussion, problem-solving strategies, videos and gentle physical exercise. Older adults can learn positive coping methods to reduce the fear of falling, and remain active and independent. Class size is limited and reservations are required. All participants will be screened prior to entry and must follow CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) guidelines. Those interested should plan to attend all eight sessions. Detective, investigator complete specialized firearms training By Kevin Weiss kweiss@lakerlutznews.com
A pair of Dade City Police Department employees have achieved the distinction of earning an advanced firearms certification. Dade City Police Detective Amanda Chambers and Investigator Diana Surratt completed a local three-day certified firearms specialty class, organized by the International Firearm Specialist Academy. Chambers and Surratt were among 22 class members from various law enforcement agencies from across the Tampa Bay area. The in-classroom firearms specialist academy took place at the DCPD Training Center in November 2019. The two became the first to successfully complete the course’s 13 learning modules and tests, according to Dade City Police Chief James Walters. Areas of focus for certification include safe handling practices; accurate identification of firearms and ammunition; competency to explain firearms rules and classifications, and nomenclature; and mechanical operation. The two members’ certifications became official March 4. The firearms academy originally was de-
veloped by Daniel O’ Kelly, a retired special agent from the Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. O’ Kelly recognized there was a learning gap in firearms training and specialty after he served as lead instructor of firearm technology at the ATF National Academy in Glynco, Georgia. One of the lead instructors for the local firearms class was retired Tampa Police captain Bret Bartlett, who made a presentation during a March 9 Dade City Commission meeting to recognize the Dade City Police employees’ achievement. The certification, Bartlett said, “is designed to let investigators and officers make better firearms cases so we put more bad guys away in jail, more efficiently.” “It’s a difficult class,” Bartlett said.“When I took it the first time, I realized there’s a lot more that I needed to learn, a lot more than I knew, so they worked very hard, they were very diligent. There are very few in this whole country, very few certified firearms specialists.” Chambers was hired by the local police department in December 2016. Surratt was bought on as a part-time employee in January 2017 and became full-time in October last year.
