Pasco Schools to open Aug. 24

Pasco County Schools has delayed the start of school for two weeks, but controversy continues over how the district should deliver instruction once the new school year begins.

The Pasco County School Board on July 21 unanimously approved changes in the school calendar to delay opening day from the original date of Aug. 10 to the new date of Aug. 24.

Board members also approved an Aug. 17 start date for employees, also a two-week delay from the originally planned Aug. 3.

Pasco County School Superintendent Kurt Browning recommended the two-week delay in the midst of rising COVID-19 cases in Florida.

Browning said the district plans to comply with the state directive that requires it to open all schools for five days a week, to provide a face-to-face learning option for students. It also will offer two online options.

Delaying the start date will require the district to make up for lost time, Browning said.

His staff has developed a plan that adds 18 to 20 instructional minutes to each school day, and will forego early release days during the fall semester, he said.

The board’s decision to delay reopening until Aug. 24, but to keep the brick-and-mortar option, came despite concerns raised by Don Peace, president of the United School See SCHOOLS, page 15A

2020 MLB season is here, and so are these locals

The 2020 MLB (Major League Baseball) season will be unlike any other it has experienced, thanks to COVID-19. The condensed 60-game schedule is believed to be the league’s shortest season since 1878. Dade City Police Chief James Walters has reached quite the career milestone — 25 consecutive years with the only law enforcement agency he knows.

Walters joined the Dade City Police Department in 1995 as a beat cop, fresh out of Saint Leo University.

Since then, he has worked his way through the ranks as a detective, sergeant and captain, among other titles.

He became acting chief in February 2018, when then Chief Ray Velboom retired.

And, he became the department’s top cop that August, a role he still performs.

On the whole,Walters said, the last quarter-century has “gone by in a flash.”

“It felt like just yesterday I was walking into the doors of the old Dade City Police Department building,”Walters said during a recent phone interview with The Laker/Lutz News.“It seems like it was just yesterday I was walking in for the very first time.”

Over the past few weeks, community members and leaders have congratulated Walters on his 25 years of service — somewhat jokingly adding that they’re looking forward to seeing him in uniform for another 25 years.

While he won’t be working in 2045, he has no plans to step away anytime soon.

He said he’s humbled by the community support and appreciation.

“I’m glad this community, this city still wants me to be a part of things. As long as

Consumers now have more grocery options in Pasco

Grocery shoppers now have two more options in Pasco County, as GreenWise Market and Aldi have opened new stores.

The 25,147-square-foot GreenWise Market, at the Preserve Marketplace Shopping Center, 2175 Sembler Drive, is GreenWise Market’s fourth location in Florida.The Preserve Marketplace is off State Road 54, in Odessa.

“Our GreenWise Market is about exploration, community, enticing the palate, and a place for the foodie, as well the food connoisseur. We celebrate food, and have an extended offering of natural, organic and prepared foods,” said Maria Brous, director of communications for Publix, via email.

The store offers specialty, natural and organic foods. Its personal care offerings include vitamins, nutritional supplements, natural soaps and shampoos, and more. Its meats have been raised with no antibiotics or added hormones, and it offers sustainably-sourced seafood.

Main Event: A destination for family fun

The tempo was upbeat, as arcade lights glowed and music pulsed through a surround-sound system at last week’s grand-opening celebration for Main Event, a new entertainment venue next to Tampa Premium Outlets.

Visitors had a chance to get their first peek at a place that’s obviously dedicated to being a fun destination for people of all ages.

Main Event, at 2839 Creek Grass Way in Lutz, offers a wide array of activities, including bowling, arcade games, laser tag, gravity ropes and other activities, plus various food and drink options.

Members of the North Tampa Bay Chamber gathered to welcome Main Event to the community and their enthusiasm was apparent.

It was the chamber’s first big, in-person ribbon-cutting ceremony since concerns about potential spread of COVID-19 shut down such activities beginning in midMarch.

Hope Kennedy, president and CEO of the North Tampa Bay Chamber, put it like this: “We’re so excited to be able to have a grand opening — figure it out, logistically, with all of the CDC regulations.”

She’s also enthused about what Main Event will bring to the community.

“This was the one thing that was lacking in Wesley Chapel — family entertainment, where you felt safe to come with your entire family, have a great time,” the chamber executive said.“It appeals to all age groups.

It’s a needed addition to our community.”

Christa Watson, the sales manager for Main Event, explained, in an interview, why the entertainment center chose the Pasco County location.

“This appealed to our company because it’s an underserved market,”Watson said.

“We knew this area needed something for families.

“The way that Wesley Chapel and Lutz are growing — there are families here, who want to have some fun.

“There isn’t anything for families to do, like this, for about 22 to 25 miles,” Watson said. “Why not Wesley Chapel? Why not Lutz.”

The sales manager detailed some of the center’s offerings.

“We have over 50,000 square feet of family fun entertainment center, here.

“We have 22 bowling lanes that are stateof-the-art.We have a two-story, indoor laser tag arena. We have a suspended gravity ropes course with zipline, indoors — hello, how fun!

kitchen and restaurant,” she said.There’s also a grab-and-go food option, and a full bar.

“We have meeting and party space, as well,”Watson said.

The center officially opened on July 17, at noon, and it will be open 365 days a year.

Watson addressed the logistics of trying to open the business in the midst of a global pandemic.

“It’s been challenging, but honestly, any great business just pivots.

“We’ll open mindfully and thoughtfully, at somewhere between 10% and 15% of our capacity.

“That way, we can properly socially distance at every one of our activities, at the bowling lane, and our bar and at the restaurants,”Watson said.

Even in the midst of a pandemic, Main Event gives people a chance to go out and have fun, she said.

“Right now, people and families haven’t really been able to do anything,” Watson noted.

But, precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of staff and customers, she added.

All staff members are wearing masks and gloves, and everyone over the age of 4 who enters the center will be required to wear a mask, in accordance to Pasco County’s regulations.

“Every single game and activity is sanitized after each individual person.We work in zones here, with team members.

“We have a bowling valet that serves you and fits you for your balls and your shoes, versus a self-serve touch environment.”

“Constant safety is really important to us at Main Event because we know that it’s the only way families, in an environment (COVID-19) like this, will be able to come out, get out a little bit and have some fun,”

There are more than 100 arcade games at Main Event, and there’s bowling, laser tag, gravity ropes and other activities, plus a variety of food and drink options.

And, she noted that Main Event has partnerships with AdventHealth Center Ice, Wiregrass Ranch sports complex and various hospitality entities.

Main Event is looking forward to offering a fun option for families traveling to the area for sporting events,Watson said.

“We can’t wait to have a lot of fun and see smiles on faces,” he said.

And, it didn’t take long for the good times to begin.

Chamber members were having a blast, as they hurled bowling balls down the center’s state-of-the-art lanes — during a Main Event ceremonial ball roll.

Wesley Chapel’s rec center on target for 2021

It has taken years to get to this point, but by the summer of 2021, a new recreation center at Wesley Chapel District Park is expected to be up and running.

A virtual groundbreaking was held, due to COVID-19.

A group of elected leaders and county officials gathered at the district park on July 15 and tossed out a few ceremonial shovels of dirt.

A video of the event was shared by the county’s Media Relations & Communications Team.

In the video, Pasco County Commission Chairman Mike Moore talks about the longterm impact he expects the project to have.

“I spent years here with my children, in a number of sports. Now other children for years and years to come, and generations to come are going to be able to enjoy this indoor facility,” said Moore who coached flag football, baseball and soccer at the district park, when his three children were younger.

Commissioner Ron Oakley thanked Moore for his involvement on the rec center project. Oakley added:“It’ll be great for this community.”

Keith Wiley, the county’s director of parks, recreation and natural resources, said the district park is the county’s largest athletic facility, in terms of space.

“So, this complex basically completes that package,”Wiley said.

The bid on the project was awarded to Keator Construction LLC, for slightly under $4 million.

Funding for the project primarily comes from park impact fees collected in the central zone of the county,Wiley said.

“We are fortunate enough with the growth that was occurring in the central area to be able to accumulate enough money to make this project come to life. So, we’re extremely excited about that,”Wiley said.

completed and open in the summer of 2021, and we’ll kick off our first program and welcome our first guest at that time,” he added.

The 17,800-square-foot facility will accommodate a number of sports and other activities, including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, summer day camp, toddler activities, community events and other uses,

according to plans previously shared with The Laker/Lutz News.

The new facility will feature a gymnasium with a regulation-size basketball court that can be converted into two smaller courts, two volleyball courts or four pickleball courts.

There will be restrooms and showers, too.

Connerton to get a downtown?

The Pasco County Commission has taken the first step in the process needed to clear the way for a proposed Downtown Connerton in Land O’ Lakes.

Commissioners approved changes to the long-range plan that would set the stage for a new mixed-use community within Connerton, that would be on the west side of Ehren Cutoff, about 2 miles south of State Road 52.

There are 16 parcels within Connerton Villages III/IV, according to county planning documents.

No one objected to the proposed change to the county’s long-range plan, which commissioners approved unanimously.

Now that the long-range plan has been amended, the next step will be consideration of a request to create a master-planned unit development (MPUD).

The land currently is zoned for agricultural use, but would be used for a mixed-use development.

The rezoning calls for activating a mixeduse area of at least 40 acres to create a Downtown Connerton.

Specifics in the proposal call for approximately 2,160 dwelling units, 55,000 square feet of retail, and 150,000 square feet of office, and a 765-student charter school, the planning documents say.

The idea is to bring employment, retail, a school and higher-density residential together to make it easy for people to walk, bicycle or use forms of transportation other than vehicles.

The area also will have pedestrian-oriented open spaces, community gathering spaces and will be within walking distance to an 80acre district park, planning documents say.

Planners also report that the county has been working with the applicant to draft a connectivity plan that “will ultimately provide a system of trails, multi-use paths and associated amenities.”

A request to rezone the land — to enable the development of the proposed Downtown Connerton — will be brought to the board for consideration, at a later date.

Multipurpose areas will accommodate a range of activities for groups, such as the Rotary Club, community associations, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Tom FitzSimons, president of the Wesley Chapel Athletic Association, said,“An indoor facility will allow us to get the kids off of the (outdoor) courts and inside to play basketball in our program, and allow us to offer wrestling and volleyball, and possibly competitive cheerleading, where they’d be inside and they could do the practicing.”

“I can’t wait to see this thing built,” FitzSimons said.

The recreational center gives people another reason to take advantage of the popular district park.

It already is packed with outdoor sports activities, including several athletic fields for youth and adults, a lighted soccer field, basketball and tennis courts, and picnic tables and grills for barbecues.

It also is home to the county’s only universal playground — designed specifically for children with disabilities.

The Land O’ Lakes Library, 2818 Collier Parkway, will offer Teen Book Boxes on July 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., for ages 14 to 18.

Pasco adopts tighter restrictions on apartments

The Pasco County Commission has adopted new standards that aim to keep apartment development from consuming frontage along state roads 54/56, between Gunn Highway and U.S. 301.

Commission Chairman Mike Moore has championed tighter restrictions along the State Road 54/56 corridor — citing the need to preserve the frontage for employment-generating development. He also has cautioned his colleagues that allowing too much apartment development now could create problems in the future, when occupancy drops and the buildings fall into disrepair.

Commissioners initially adopted the tighter restrictions on June 30, but revisited the issue on July 14 to clarify the effective date and to address a question raised about which section of State Road 54 falls within the new restrictions.

Under the adopted changes, new multifamily residential zoning and future land use amendments along the SR 54/56 corridor from Gunn Highway to U.S. 301 shall be integrated with a mixture of employment-generating land uses.

Those uses can be existing uses or new ones, according to the county’s new requirements.

Also, on properties along the State Road 54/56 corridor from Gunn Highway to U.S. 301, the first 2,000 feet adjacent to the corridor shall place new multifamily zoning and future land use amendments behind non-residential land uses unless a develop-

ment vertically integrates a mixture of uses, such as a high-rise with offices, residential and retail uses.

New rezonings or future land use amendments in the affected area that have not yet filed complete applications as of June 30 will comply with the county’s directive.

The new restrictions do not apply to the section of State Road 54 that runs between Wesley Chapel Boulevard and Zephyrhills, Chairman Moore said.

He said the directive has been clarified because questions had been raised about that.

Before voting, commissioners also heard concerns raised by Joel Tew, an attorney who frequently represents applicants in rezoning and land use requests.

Tew questioned the process being used by the board to make the changes, noting it bypassed the normal public hearing process to adopt changes to the county’s comprehensive plan and land development code.

He also said the changes are in conflict with policies within the county’s comprehensive plan.

But, David Goldstein, chief assistant county attorney, said “I am not aware of any direct inconsistencies with the comp plan or land development code, as part of this policy. However, if we identify any, we will address them through the appropriate land development code or comprehensive plan amendment.”

Moore also noted that no Pasco County property owners stepped forward during public comment to raise objections to the new restrictions.

The Pasco County School Board and Pasco County have approved an agreement that allows the county to use the school district’s fueling facilities during emergency situations.

In exchange, the county will cover the cost of installing new generators or retrofitting existing ones to ensure that the fuel facilities will continue to operate even when the power is out.

Abstract Artist Cindi Vinci Exhibits at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel

I

f you’re looking for something free to do that is interesting, artistic and safe in these days of social distancing, stop by and see the latest artist show at the Welcome Center at Avalon Park Wesley Chapel.

Artist Cindi Sherman Vinci is exhibiting over 20 paintings of her colorful, graphically intriguing paintings at the show sponsored by the Pasco Fine Arts Council and hosted by the developer of this master-planned community on State Road 54, located about three miles east of I-75.

Vinci paintings ask the question, “Do artists create reality as they see it, or does reality show the artist what to create?”

“As far back as I can remember, I have always interpreted the world in an abstract manner — I knew nothing I saw and heard was all there was to the story,” Vinci writes on her website. “For me, the world is a jumble of thoughts and ideas that run amok.”

She goes on to explain that her art reflects her idea of life and all of its jumbled aspects.

“My work reflects what I feel about life and all the changes that have occurred in my life. All my pieces tell my story,” she writes.

Vinci has been fascinated with abstract art since she was 6 years old. Born in 1953 in a stereotypical Italian family, her father also was an artist and taught her as a child. Vinci later studied interior and architectural design at Parsons School of Design in New York City, and also studied studio art and art history at State University of New York in Purchase, New York.

Vinci’s show, which runs through Aug.22, is the result of a partnership that Avalon Park Wesley Chapel began with the Pasco Fine Arts Council over a year ago.

“Our goal was to bring art and cultural Railroad events, exhibits and educational classes to East Pasco County,” explains Stephanie Lerret, senior vice president of the Avalon Park Group. “In our first year, this partnership has led to the dis-

The group of five St. Joseph’s Hospitals, including St. Joseph’s Hospital-North in Lutz, was named among the nation’s Top 100 hospitals by IBM Watson Health, according to a news release.

IBM Watson Health annually identifies the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of 3,134 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S. The list recognizes excellence in clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience and financial health. IBM Watson Health established the list to help identify best practices that may help other health care organizations achieve consistent, balanced and sustainable high performance.

This is the third consecutive year that St. Joseph’s Hospitals has earned the honor and the fourth time overall.The four other hospitals included in the recognition with St. Joseph’s Hospital-North are St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital, all in Tampa; and, St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in Riverview.

Garthwaite became the new president of St. Joseph’s Hospital-North during the nation’s greatest health crisis in more than 100 years. He started the position at the Lutz hospital during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He cited the St. Joseph HospitalNorth staff and medical team for its work in combating the coronavirus, as he transitioned into his position as president.

Saint Leo men’s hoopers earn national academic honor The Saint Leo University men’s basketball program saw two of its student-athletes earn National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court recognition for the 2019-20 season — senior guard Isaiah Hill and junior guard Gintaras Bartaskas.

Hill and Bartaskas were two of just 23 Sunshine State Conference players among the 2019-20 NABC Honors Court.

Nationwide, 1,350 men’s collegiate basketball players made the list.

To be a part of the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria.The qualifications are, academically a junior or senior and a varsity player; cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2019-20 academic year;

CATHOLIC SCHOOL MOVES START DATE

PASCO SCHOOLS DELAYS OPENING Pasco County Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning recommended a two-week delay to the start of the 2020-2021 school year, with students returning to school on Aug. 24. Teachers would return to work on Aug. 17.

The recommendation, made at a regularly scheduled virtual meeting of the school board, was unanimously approved after discussion.

The proposed delay was prompted after the district received hundreds of emails and phone calls on the topic, and after Browning and his staff worked on a plan to make the necessary adjustments to the school year calendar.

Browning made it clear that the school district still plans to open the schools for inperson, on-campus learning, as well as two online options.The two-week delay will afford the schools a greater opportunity to prepare for the return of staff and students.

The superintendent also presented his recommendation that would require masks or face coverings for all students, teachers, staff and visitors on school campuses or district buildings. The mask mandate was scheduled to be voted upon at the July 28 school board meeting.

The proposed rule describes what qualifies as a mask or face covering and under what circumstances the mask can be removed. It also describes how the school district will make accommodations for students or staff members who have a medical

EDUCATOR PASSPORT PROGRAM Pasco County Schools has added seven businesses to its Educator Passport Program, a list of businesses that offer discounts or freebies if you are a Pasco educator.

CHILD CARE SERVICES AT PHSC Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) has worked with TodayCare Children’s Center, at the West Campus in New Port Richey, to determine an appropriate time to reopen the center to ensure the safety of the children, parents and staff.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TodayCare Children’s Center closed on March 24.

The current contract for TodayCare expires on July 30, which required the college to issue a request for proposal to solicit competitive bids for the child care service.

The college administration on July 21 was due to present to the College District Board of Trustees a recommendation to offer a contract to Great Hope Preschool to assume the child care operations at the New Port Richey campus.

Great Hope is being recommended for its services and programs provided, its community engagement, and the opportunities to utilize the center near the PHSC Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel.

TodayCare will not be reopening the day care at this time, but PHSC will work with TodayCare and Great Hope to provide a transition timeline with the intent to begin a phased opening of the center in mid-August, depending on the COVID-19 status.

Services provided by Great Hope will remain the same, serving the same current age groups.

Teachers previously employed by TodayCare are encouraged to apply for positions with Great Hope Preschool posted on the Indeed website.

EXAM PREP COURSE Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC), through the Continuing Workforce Education department, is offering new hybrid exam prep classes designed to prepare students to sit for testing to become industry-certified in a variety of fields.

Aldi also opened a new store in Pasco market, at 2215 Sun Vista Drive in Lutz, near a broad array of shops, restaurants and stores at Cypress Creek Town Center.

Matt Thon, the Haines City Aldi division vice president, said the grocer considered a variety of factors when choosing a store location.

“We want the best sites that are closest to our shoppers and can support a high daily traffic volume,”Thon said, via email.

“As the demand for Aldi grows, so do our real estate options. Bottom line, we want to be conveniently located for our shoppers,” Thon added.

He noted that Aldi’s “priority focus is saving people money on the food and products they want most.”

He said the store achieves that by “offering shoppers a curated selection of Aldi-exclusive brands.

“More than 90% of our store consists of Aldi-exclusive products,” he said.

He also noted that “when it comes to value, Aldi won’t be beat on price. For the past decade,Aldi has held the esteemed title of Value Leader among U.S. grocery stores

Thon also said that each of Aldi’s stores, including the one in Lutz, employs 15 to 20 people.

The state’s directive is being challenged, Peace added.

“Yesterday, in a court in Miami, the Florida Education Association filed suit against his order (Corcoran’s), labeling it ‘arbitrary and capricious.’They further claimed that returning to brick-and-mortar now, with COVID numbers on the rise, would be unsafe for students and employees,” Peace said.

The union president also noted that a USEP survey of district employees found that “over 75% of those replying felt that the only safe way to return now is distance learning.”

He told board members that he expected the union to take a formal position on the issue soon.

But, School Board Chairwoman Colleen Beaudoin said the district can’t take an online-only approach.

During COVID-19,Aldi has been focusing its efforts on ensuring essential food and household goods are available,Thon said.

The new location is part of Aldi’s national expansion, according to a company news release.The grocery chain has nearly 2,000 stores across 36 states and aspires to become the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer, by store count, by the end of 2022, the release says.

Aldi offers its own line of gluten-free products, antibiotic-free meats and organic products, including bananas, tomatoes, avocados, apples and salad mixes, and organic milk, almond butter and salsa, among other things, the company reports.

Aldi also has integrated several new safety features in all its stores across the country, to ensure the health and safety of customers and employees.

“A lot of people are saying they want to start online and on time.That is currently not an option.

“One thing that is crystal clear is that we must follow statute to receive funding or nobody gets paid and our students lose out,” Beaudoin said.

School board member Alison Crumbley said delaying the school start provides more time for more information and more preparation.

“It gives us all a bit more time to see where the local trend of the virus is going,” Crumbley said.

It also gives parents more time to reflect on options, and schools more time to prepare, she said.

“The challenge of balancing student achievement with safety is a daunting one,” Crumbley said.

School board member Cynthia Armstrong said a delay of two weeks allows the district to end the first semester before the holiday break, which she thinks is important.

A longer break would not allow that possibility, she said.

The district’s union since has taken a formal position on the reopening of schools.

According to the union’s website, USEP will strongly advocate for distance learning only until there is a 14-day downward trend in positive COVID-19 cases.

It’s where Mayor Camille Hernandez summed up her appreciation to Walters: “You are truly an asset, you are a pleasure to work with, and your outreach and concern for the community and students, and the young people and families in our community is noteworthy.”

DESTINED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT

Walters’ pathway into law enforcement and public service began while growing up in Inverness, in Citrus County.

Walters said he discovered what he wanted to be in the summer of 1979, when he was just 8 years old.

That was when he survived an alligator attack, while swimming in a lake on his parents’ property. As he tells it, an alligator grabbed his foot and pulled him out of the water. He sustained injuries, but managed to escape.

During Walters’ three-week stay in a hospital, he was visited several times by Jamie Adams, then a wildlife officer with the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission.

Adams, would go on to become longtime sheriff of Sumter County through the 1980s and 1990s.

The positive interactions that Walters had with Adams left an imprint on the young boy, that he would never forget.

“He said he was going to go get that gator, and that made me pretty happy,” Walters recalled,“so back then, it left an impression on a scared kid, and I never really wanted to do anything else in my life.”

DADE CITY LOVE

Walters moved to Dade City roughly 30 years ago, to finish his undergraduate degree in criminal justice at the University of Saint Leo. Before that, he had graduated from Citrus High School and played college football for a few years at a small school in Iowa — St.

Ambrose University. But, as a Florida boy,“I nearly froze to death,”Walters quipped.

So, he transferred to Saint Leo. Walters quickly immersed himself into the Dade City community, coaching football and wrestling at Pasco High School. He was an assistant football coach on Perry Brown’s staff that won a state title in 1992.

After experiencing “a tremendous feeling of community,” where the Pasco High football stadium “would just be overflowing with people,”Walters had no desire to live or work anyplace else.

“I grew up in a small town. Dade City felt like home, and I really fell in love with the community,” Walters said. “It’s really small town America.”

That small town feeling, however, could change a little bit in coming years.

With Dade City poised for extensive growth that could see its population more than double in size in the next decade or so, Walters acknowledged it’s a challenge for an agency that has 23 full-time sworn and about 40 personnel total.

Preliminary plans call for more homes to be built than currently exist within city limits,Walters noted.

Growing the department in proportion to the number of rooftops will be “a metered approach” in coordination with city leaders, the police chief said.

“We’re not going to accomplish anything overnight,”Walters,“but, we’re going to try to grow as the city grows, so we can maintain the levels of service that the citizens and the visitors of this community come to expect,” he said.

Check out these locals during 2020 MLB season

T

he 2020 MLB (Major League Baseball) season will be unlike any other it has experienced, thanks to COVID-19.

The condensed 60-game schedule is believed to be the league’s shortest season since 1878. Fans will have to watch the games on TV, online, or listen to the radio — as stadiums will be off-limits to them, at least initially.

There also will be myriad other social distancing and health and safety protocols, and some new rules — such as the universal DH (designated hitter) and extra innings beginning with a runner on second base.

The season kicked off on July 23, four months later than expected, after MLB elected to postpone play in early March because of the pandemic.

Though later than anticipated, and with far fewer games than expected, baseball fans will get a chance to watch their favorite teams and players battle for a postseason spot and World Series crown.

Meanwhile, a handful of players (and a manager) with ties to The Laker/Lutz News coverage area look to take on prominent, even starring, roles with their respective MLB franchise this season.

Here’s a closer look at some of the locals to watch.

SEATTLE MARINERS, PITCHER Local tie: Zephyrhills High School Fully recovered from offseason knee surgery, the 29-year-old right-hander is expected to make a sizable impact for the Mariners bullpen, sliding into the team’s late-inning pitching or even as a closer.

Since being traded to Seattle from the Washington Nationals last May, Adams registered a 3.77 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched across 29 games.The breakout 2019 campaign was cut short after a stomach-churning moment where he suffered a torn ACL and meniscus. It happened while trying to avoid a near-collision fielding a play at first base in a late September game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Adams grew up in Zephyrhills, playing little league at Sam Pasco Park. He went on to

earn four letters in baseball (and one in basketball) at Zephyrhills High School from 2006 to 2009. He posted a 2.43 ERA and 80 strikeouts in his Bulldog career.

Adams’ high school success led to a baseball scholarship at the University of South Florida, a program that had its first Big East Championship final in 2012, during his junior year.

Adams signed with the Los Angeles Angels later that year after being selected in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB Draft.

His road to the big leagues was a lengthy one, having thrown more than 250 innings across five minor league seasons before making his MLB debut in 2017 with the Nationals (from where he was traded to by Los Angeles in late 2016).

Also, Adams joins a respective list of former MLB players from the Zephyrhills area, joining Dave Eiland (1988-2000) and Domonic Brown (2010-2015).

MIAMI MARLINS, OUTFIELDER Local tie: New Tampa resident/business owner

Through born and raised in Brandon, the 12-year MLB veteran has since made New Tampa home, living in the Hunter’s Green area and recently opening an F45 Training fitness center chain at The Walk at Highwoods Preserve neighborhood shopping center.

The left-handed hitting corner outfielder is the quintessential journeyman, having played for seven different MLB franchises, his longest tenure coming with the Tampa Bay Rays from 2009-2014.

He’s mainly played a platoon role throughout his career, almost exclusively getting action against right-handed pitchers.

In recent years, he’s taken on a lesser role, as a spot starter and pinch-hitter.

The 35-year-old Joyce begins the 2020 season on the 10-day injured list, due to an undisclosed condition and having not participated in the team’s July Summer Camp activities. In more than 1,300 MLB games played, Joyce has accumulated 145 career home runs and 482 RBIs, along with a .243/.343/.432 slash line.

The 25-year-old Mercado is penciled in as the Indians starting centerfielder.That follows a showy 2019 rookie season where he batted .269 with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs in 119 games, adding 70 runs scored, 25 doubles, three triples and 15 stolen bases.

A native of Columbia, Mercado and his family emigrated to the United States and settled in the Tampa area when he was 7 years old.

He became a four-year starter at shortstop at Gaither High School from 2010 to 2013, leading the program to back-to-back district crowns.

As a Cowboy, Mercado was something of a prep prodigy. He was named ESPN’s No. 1 middle infielder in the nation and dotted multiple high school All-American lists — Under Armour All-American, MaxPreps Underclass All-American and Perfect Game All-American Classic and Underclass AllAmerican.

In addition to his skills on the diamond, Mercado had a 5.0 weighted GPA at Gaither and originally planned to attend Florida State University on a baseball scholarship.

That all changed when he was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2013 MLB, electing to sign with the club for a $1.5 million signing bonus.

Mercado spent nearly six years working through the Cardinals minor league system until he was traded to the Indians in July 2018. He made his MLB debut on May 14, 2019, against the Chicago White Sox. Also noteworthy, Mercado became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018.

Entering his fifth big-league season, the 28-year-old right-handed pitcher is projected to slot in as the Cardinals’ setup man or late-inning option, after a strong 2019 campaign where he won 11 games and posted a 3.66 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 60 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched.

Gant is known for having one of the most unique windups in baseball, whereby he takes a couple left-footed toe taps, then pauses before firing off a pitch. He’s also regarded for sporting a five-pitch repertoire, including a changeup nicknamed “The Vulcan” — gripping the ball between the middle and ring fingers, garnering its name from the Vulcan salute used by Spock in the Star Trek series.

Gant moved to Wesley Chapel when he was 11, from Savannah, Georgia. He wound up starring on the Wiregrass Ranch High varsity baseball team from 2008 to 2011 — striking out over 200 batters and suffering just three losses in four years.

Gant wasn’t only involved with baseball, though.

He was a member of the Wiregrass Ranch basketball and swimming teams, and

also served as scorekeeper for the girls basketball program, which was coached by his father, John Sr., then a science teacher at the school.

Gant signed with the New York Mets out of high school after being selected in the 21st round of the 2011 MLB Draft.After four years in their minor league system, Gant was traded to the Atlanta Braves, where he made his MLB debut in 2016. He was traded offseason to the Cardinals, where he has been since.

Gant has customarily spent parts of his baseball offseason training in and around Wesley Chapel.

KEVIN CASH,

Toronto Blue Jays.

Reports out of Summer Camp indicate the 23-year-old Pearson is indeed ready for The Show, having refined breaking pitches to complement a fastball that regularly touches triple digits.

Born and raised in Odessa, Pearson starred at Bishop McLaughlin Catholic High School, helping the program to the Class 3A state semifinals as a senior in 2015. He wrapped up his prep career with a career 1.24 earned run average and 144 strikeouts in 101.2 innings pitched, with a 12-1 record.

Pearson went on to play college baseball at Miami’s Florida International University, then transferred to the College of Central Florida in Ocala. There, he was named the Rawlings/Perfect Game JUCO Pitcher of the Year, and subsequently selected by the Blue Jays in the first round (28th overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft, signing with the team for a $2.45 million bonus.

Pearson has proceeded to shine at each level of the minors, boasting a combined 2.19 ERA, 0.87 WHIP and 119 strikeouts in 123.1 innings from rookie ball through Triple-A. The budding major leaguer spent a portion of the leaguewide shutdown in Tampa, training with other professional athletes at Yo Murphy Performance.

Before enjoying eight years as an MLB catcher and now manager of the Tampa Bay Rays, the 42-year-old Cash fine-tuned his baseball skills and acumen in Lutz, playing at Northside Little League and Gaither High School.

He spent his younger days growing up in the Valley Ranch Drive neighborhood, situated across from Lake Park.

Cash first hit the national scene in 1989 — then a 12-year-old second baseman for a Northside Little League team that reached the 43rd Little League World Series.

Cash would go on to later play college baseball at Florida State University and earn spots with six different MLB franchises from 2002-2010 — including earning two World Series rings with the 2007 Red Sox and 2009 Yankees, respectively.

Once his playing career concluded, Cash ventured into coaching and has been the Rays manager since 2015. He’s widely regarded as one of the game’s best for leading a Rays rebuilding effort that embraces outside-the-box strategies, such as platoons, shifts, and openers, combined with strong leadership skills in dealing with players.

Baseball is undoubtedly in his blood, as his father and uncle both played professionally, the latter reaching the big leagues in the 1970s.

Pasco keeps growing, despite COVID-19

usiness in Pasco County is coming back to life as residents, weary of a pandemic-enforced lockdown, venture back to the world of shopping and dining.

There are hopeful signs for commercial rebirth.

Neon “open” signs are visible in storefronts.

Banners planted at the roadside’s edge wave at passing motorists.

Parking lots at malls and shopping centers are filling up again.

But, it’s not just the established businesses that are reviving Pasco’s economy. Business owners and developers continue to invest in new retail especially along one of the county’s busiest east/west corridors – State Road 54 and State Road 56.

On State Road 54, west of U.S. 41, The Preserve Marketplace and two retail centers at Starkey Ranch are adding shops, restaurants, health care services, and offices.

At Bexley Ranch, in Land O’ Lakes, land is being cleared and leveled on Lot A for the Bexley South Office Park, off Bexley Village Drive, near Springhill Suites.

A Crunch Fitness is scheduled to open Aug. 25 off State Road 54 in Trinity.

Meanwhile, on the State Road 54/56 corridor east of U.S. 41, there are new developments, too.

Near the juncture of State Road 56 and Interstate 75, a banner announces that Tidal Wave Auto Spa is coming to an outparcel at Tampa Premium Outlets.

In the same general area, Main Event, a 50,000-square-foot entertainment venue, celebrated its grand opening less than two weeks ago.

And, another Crunch Fitness is planning to open in October in the old Winn-Dixie location, off Collier Parkway and State Road 54, in Land O’ Lakes.

The Collier Parkway location is a great choice for a fitness gym because it’s along a high traffic corridor, said Geoff Dyer, president of Crunch Fitness.“It’s in the heart of the (Land O’ Lakes) neighborhood,” he said.

During the COVID-19 shutdown, work continued on the Trinity and Land O’ Lakes locations, Dyer said, adding,“for all intents and purposes, we haven’t seen any slow-down in our developments.”

He noted that Crunch Fitness gyms shut down for about two months at the start of the pandemic, but now the gyms are open and adhering to safety guidelines of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Membership has returned to about 95% of what it was pre-shutdown,” Dyer said.

While activity, in general, appears to be picking up and new construction continues to kick up dirt — a cloud hovers over business decisions due to the uncertain nature of COVID-19.

Ralph Santell and his family moved to Starkey Ranch and began plans to open Santelli Pizza & Pasta nearly three years ago.

They saw the growth happening in Pasco.

His storefront is at Starkey Ranch Town Square, a plaza located at State Road 54 and Gunn Highway.A few tenants in the center, including J. Joseph Salon, are open.

Santell plans to open by September, possibly with outdoor dining and takeout. He said he’ll decide closer to opening whether he’ll initially offer indoor dining.

“That (COVID-19) has been an extra challenge that influences things on a daily basis,” Santell said. “It’s been hard to navigate the whole COVID-19 situation.We take it one day at a time.”

Santell also owns a restaurant in the Westchase subdivision in Hillsborough County. That restaurant closed, then reopened, but is now closed again — except for takeout.

Another Starkey Ranch retail center at State Road 54 and Heart Pine Avenue – Starkey Ranch Business Park – also has a roster of tenants slated to open, including The Wicked Pour, Tropical Smoothie Café and Hungry Greek.

The pandemic slowed opening plans, but construction on the retail park is nearly finished.

Crunch Fitness is planning to open a gym in October in the former Winn-Dixie grocery store, at State Road 54 and Collier Parkway.

“All of these are coming along,” said Matt Call, project director for Starkey Ranch.“With COVID-19, things take a bit longer.”

Additional outparcels at both retail centers are available for development — though it could take longer to get projects going, Call added.

A new standalone Starbucks is coming soon to the Sunlake shopping center, as well.

Retail developments, including The Preserve Marketplace, are adding new tenants, including the recently opened anchor store – Greenwise. Majik Touch Cleaners is open, too.

Other tenants with plans to open include Chipotle, Heartland Dental and CVS Pharmacy.

“It’s going to be a cool little plaza when it’s done,” Call said.“I think Pasco is going to continue to grow. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

This native anole can change its color when angry, frightened or during temperature stress. An invasive species of anole, the Cuban brown anole, is driving the native green anole out.

PET PAWS STONE CRAB REGULATIONS

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at its July meeting approved changes to recreational and commercial stone crab regulations, according to an FWC news release.

Florida’s stone crab fishery has experienced a long-term decline in harvest and is likely undergoing overfishing.

The FWC staff worked with stakeholders on changes that are intended to increase the stone crab population and build resiliency in the fishery.

The approved changes that go into effect on Oct. 1 include: • Moving the season end date from May 15 to May 1; closed on May 2 • Requiring a 2 3/16-inch escape ring in all plastic and wood stone crab traps before the start of the 2023-2024 season • Increasing the minimum claw size limit by 1/8-inch, from 2 ¾-inches to 2 7/8inches • Limiting possession of whole stone crabs on the water to two checker boxes, each up to 3 feet by 3 feet, or a total volume of 24 cubic feet. Checker boxes are

used to hold crabs onboard a vessel before they are measured and legal-size claws are removed.

MORE TURTLES RELEASED

The Florida Aquarium on July 13 released two endangered juvenile green sea turtles at Anastasia State Park.

The turtles, Fredrick and Talbot, were returned to the sea following months of rehabilitation and care by The Florida Aquarium’s Animal Response Team, supported by Florida Blue.

Talbot was found in the St. Augustine inlet, with a deep laceration on the back of his neck, and was missing a front flipper.

Fredrick was found stranded in the Mayport Naval Station in Jacksonville. He was mildly debilitated and had a plastron (shell bottom) fracture.

The aquarium began administering treatment for their injuries and health issues.

Both sea turtles recovered and after a little over two months of rehab, they were

ready to go back into the sea.

The Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center opened over a year ago. It has treated turtles with a variety of injuries, including infection, laceration, amputations, cold stunning and plastron fractures. It also has released 20 sea turtles since that opening.

The Pasco Economic Development Council Inc. (PEDC), has canceled plans for its 34th Annual Awards and Trade Show, which had been set for Sept. 3 at Saddlebrook Resort. The organization decided a celebration at this time, when so many businesses have suffered greatly due to COVID-19, would be in poor taste, according to a news release.
